Dwyane Wade and Kevin Garnett have come up with a unique take in the never-ending debate about who is the greatest of all time between LeBron James and Michael Jordan.

Discussing the two NBA legends, Wade and Garnett seemed to agree there can’t be one greatest of all time because of the constantly evolving nature of how the sport is played:

KG and D-Wade debate who’s the 🐐 on @KGArea21 https://t.co/ypdNPf6K8z

There will never be a consensus opinion in the LeBron-Jordan debate. It’s been going on for years, with the debate teams from Harvard and Yale even trying to settle it in a SportsCenter segment.

Looking at the raw stats, Jordan has a higher scoring average (30.1 points per game) than James (27.1). LeBron has the edge in assists (7.2 to 5.3) and rebounds (7.4 to 6.2).

Jordan’s perfect 6-0 record in the NBA Finals is also a big point in his favor. James has won three titles, but his six Finals losses are the third-most in NBA history.

Fans will be able to see a wide-ranging discussion between Wade and Garnett during a Players Only special at 9 p.m. ET on Monday.

Saudi Crown Prince MBS to visit Pakistan for investment deals

Islamabad, Pakistan – Saudi Arabia‘s crown prince is due to arrive in the Pakistani capital for a state visit to a key strategic ally that is expected to see the Gulf kingdom sign investment deals worth more than $10bn, government officials said.

Mohammed bin Salman will land in Islamabad on Sunday for a two-day visit that will see him hold talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa and President Arif Alvi, Pakistan‘s foreign office said in a statement this week.

Prince Mohammed (also known as MBS), a powerful figure in the Saudi hierarchy who has wielded control over the country’s policies since his elevation to the role of Crown Prince in 2017, will also hold talks with Pakistani senators.

The visit comes at a time when Saudi Arabia is seeking to diversify its economy and investments in foreign countries, with falling oil prices hitting the Kingdom’s economy hard.

The country has also faced a degree of diplomatic isolation after the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in its consulate in Istanbul last year.

MBS leaves Pakistan on Monday, with Malaysia, India and Chinanext on his itinerary.

Pakistan faces nationwide fuel shortages

During his stay, “Pakistan and Saudi Arabia will be signing a number of agreements and MoUs related to diverse sectors, including investment, finance, power, renewable energy, internal security, media, culture and sports”, Pakistan’s foreign office said on Wednesday.

High on the agenda will be agreements that would see an oil refinery established in the southern Pakistani port of Gwadar, as well as the possible acquisition of two major power plants by Saudi companies, officials and analysts told Al Jazeera.

“The projects, if they materialise, they will be in the double digit billion dollars,” said Haroon Sharif, the head of the Pakistani government’s Board of Investment.

Sharif stressed that the trip was also aimed at spurring private Saudi investment in Pakistan, which has been struggling with a balance of payments crisis and a faltering domestic economy.

“The crown prince is also bringing about 25 businessmen with him and these men will now have meetings in other sectors like food processing, IT, the finance sector, construction and hospitality,” added Sharif.

“They will be having business-to-business meetings during the visit and then we will have a follow up investors conference after this.”

A drop in the ocean

Since last year, Pakistan’s economy has struggled to regain momentum, with foreign reserves dwindling, exports falling and inflation rising.

On Thursday, Pakistan’s central bank said foreign reserves were down to $8.2bn, which covers less than two months of imports. Pakistan has approached Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and China for loans to cover the gap.

Saudi had previously pledged $6bn in financial support to Pakistan, including a $3bn loan and $3bn in deferred oil payments. It is unclear if those pledged funds are part of the agreements that will be signed in Islamabad.

Analysts, however, say the support from Saudi Arabia and other countries is just a drop in the ocean.

“[Those funds] can help Pakistan survive the next six months, until June perhaps,” said Saad Ali, head of research at Karachi-based Inter Market Securities. “We have already received $3bn from Saudi, and the foreign reserves are still only at $8bn. We are at a burn rate of $1bn a month. This is not a sustainable formula.”

Pakistan is in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and is expected to avail a programme of reforms that would see it receive roughly $6bn.

Oil products form one of the country’s major imports, at $13.2bn in the last financial year, according to central bank data. Pakistan relies on Saudi Arabia for roughly 23 percent of its oil imports while it exported goods worth $317m to Saudi Arabia in the same period, as per the central bank.

The oil refinery in Gwadar has been earmarked as a major project that could emerge from Prince Mohammed’s visit, boosting the country’s ability to process oil and possibly adding the ability to develop petrochemical products, if such a complex is included in the final agreement.

“The importance of that project is significant,” said Ali, who placed the expected value of the deal at between $5-10bn, depending on whether the petrochemical complex is included.

Pakistan imports 69 percent of its oil, according to government figures. Setting up another refinery would allow it to import cheaper crude oil, as opposed to refined petroleum products, Ali said.

Saudi Arabia is also expected to sign contracts that would see it acquire two liquified natural gas-based power plants, both of which the government has been aiming to sell as part of a privatisation drive, Reuters news agency reported.

A further $4bn is expected in deals on developing alternative energy plants, as well as on mineral mining enterprises, Sharif said in a statement.

He warned, however, against expecting any of the deals to reap immediate rewards, as they would need months of technical work before implementation.

“In the immediate term, there is a feel good factor, which is very badly needed,” said Sharif. “It increases investors’ confidence in the market.”

‘No strings attached’

On Thursday, Pakistan’s foreign minister said Saudi investments would have “no strings attached”.

Saudi has long demanded that Pakistan take an increased role in its war in Yemen, add troops to the Saudi-led Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) and participate in its blockade of Qatar.

General Raheel Sharif, the chief of the IMCTC and a former Pakistani army chief, arrived in Islamabad on Monday to hold talks with the prime minister and his successor as Pakistani army chief, General Bajwa.

Analysts, however, expect that the investment agreements will not significantly affect Pakistan’s position on those issues, which has generally remained one of neutrality.

“Pakistan is already a strategic partner, so what else would change?” said Zahid Hussain, an Islamabad-based analyst. “Pakistan is already very clearly siding with Saudi Arabia on many issues.”

Nevertheless, Hussain says the visit is “significant” in that it shows a diversification of the relationship beyond one seen as based on security and strategic imperatives.

“Saudi Arabia and Pakistan had a long-term strategic relationship, the basis of the relationship has always been security driven,” he said. “Pakistan has seen Saudi Arabia has a protector.

“Now with Saudi investment coming in for the first time at this level, that is a changing dynamic, it is a dimensional change.”

Getting revenge after back-to-back losses, Team USA defeated the World 161-144 in the 2019 Rising Stars Challenge at Spectrum Center as part of NBA All-Star Weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The American team won thanks in large part to having four players—Kyle Kuzma, Jayson Tatum, Donovan Mitchell, Trae Young—score at least 20 points. De’Aaron Fox was essentially the designated passer, finishing with 16 assists, third-most in Rising Stars Challenge history.

Looking fresh after two days off, Los Angeles Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma was named MVP after posting a game-high 35 points.

Hawks fans haven’t had much to cheer for during this rebuilding season, but Collins and Trae Young gave them something to be excited about Friday night:

Young tried to provide another highlight, though he was unable to finish his Allen Iverson-esque crossover attempt against Josh Okogie:

The Hawks rookie did flirt with a triple-double in the win:

One year after scoring 15 points in his Rising Stars debut, Tatum made his presence felt in an even bigger way this time around. The Boston Celtics star finished with 30 points and nine rebounds, presumably feeling the heat after his son grabbed the spotlight during practice earlier in the day:

Unfortunately, Simmons didn’t follow through with it after the game tipped off. He was still able to satisfy the audience by driving to the basket:

It was a fairly quiet night for rookie sensation Luka Doncic, who finished with 13 points and nine assists, though he did get one gorgeous no-look alley-oop to Lauri Markkanen in the third quarter:

Markannen was the only player other than Simmons who scored at least 20 points for the World team. He finished the first half on fire, with at least 20 points in each of his last six games. The Bulls haven’t had many things go right this season, but the 21-year-old is a good sign of hope.

Nobody in Charlotte is paying to see defense this weekend, so the NBA’s brightest young stars were able to put on a scoring clinic for the crowd in attendance. The two teams shot an identical 55.4 percent overall, combined for 92 assists and a Rising Stars-record 305 total points.

It’s been apparent all season the future of the NBA is in great hands. That was proven throughout this game, especially with new arrivals like Doncic, Jaren Jackson Jr., Marvin Bagley III and Deandre Ayton having plenty of room to keep growing before hitting their ceiling.

LeBron James, Lakers Not Favored to Make 2019 NBA Playoffs at Vegas Sportsbook

John Bazemore/Associated Press

It’s currently a toss-up whether or not the Los Angeles Lakers make the playoffs this season.

According to Ben Fawkes of ESPN, there are equal odds (-110) to bet on the Lakers making or missing the playoffs at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. Before the season, the odds were -450 that they would get to the postseason, meaning a $450 bet would only win $100.

The team looked like a threat for part of the season, but an injury to LeBron James killed the momentum and started a massive slide. The squad is now 28-29, three spots away from the No. 8 seed, with about two months left in the season.

In addition to losing, the Lakers also harmed their chances by failing to upgrade too much at the trade deadline.

According to Action Network, Los Angeles had 16-1 odds to win a title before the deadline and just 40-1 afterwards with the team unable to land Anthony Davis.

This likely isn’t what the team was hoping for when it signed LeBron James in the offseason.

The 15-time All-Star hasn’t missed the playoffs since 2005, his second season in the NBA, and has reached the NBA Finals in eight straight years.

Mueller: Manafort deserves 19.5 to 24.5 years in prison for Virginia convictions

Paul Manafort

Mueller investigation

Prosecutors made a clear reference to Manafort’s time atop Trump’s 2016 campaign, noting his ‘repeated misrepresentations to financial institutions were brazen’ during that time.

Robert Mueller’s office recommended on Friday that Paul Manafort get up to 24-and-a-half years in prison for his conviction last summer for financial malfeasance.

The special counsel’s suggestion is the opening move in what will be a two-step sentencing process for the 69-year-old former Trump campaign chairman, who appears to be on track to spend the rest of his life in prison absent a presidential pardon.

Story Continued Below

A jury in Northern Virginia convicted Manafort after a three-week trial in August on eight felony counts, including filing false tax documents, failing to register foreign bank accounts and bank fraud. A month later, on the eve of another trial in Washington, D.C., Manafort pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges in exchange for the special counsel dropping foreign-lobbying and money-laundering charges.

In their 27-page memo filed late Friday, Mueller’s team signaled it would recommend a sentence from 19-and-a-half to 24-and-a-half years in prison for the Virginia case alone. They also recommended a fine between $50,000 and $24.4 million, supervised release of up to five years and forfeitures in the amount of more than $4.4 million.

Manafort’s case is the only one to date from the special counsel’s office to reach trial. Recapping their victory, the Mueller prosecutors described a series of crimes committed “for no other reason than greed, evidencing his belief that the law does not apply to him.”

They also made a clear reference to Manafort’s time atop Trump’s 2016 campaign, noting his “repeated misrepresentations to financial institutions were brazen, at least some of which were made at a time when he was the subject of significant national attention.”

“In the end, Manafort acted for more than a decade as if he were above the law, and deprived the federal government and various financial institutions of millions of dollars,” the special counsel’s office wrote. “The sentence here should reflect the seriousness of these crimes, and serve to both deter Manafort and others from engaging in such conduct.”

Manafort’s sentencing in Virginia has until now been on hold until attorneys in D.C. could hash out a dispute over whether Manafort violated the terms of his plea deal by intentional lying during cooperation sessions with authorities.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled Manafort had indeed purposefully lied about several important subjects, voiding the plea deal and giving Mueller leeway to suggest a more stringent prison sentence.

The judge overseeing the Virginia case, U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III, theoretically could order Manafort to spend up to 80 years in prison for the Virginia case, though federal judges often follow guidelines that call for terms well short of the maximum.

Also still to be determined is how Manafort serves his prison times for both the D.C. and Virginia cases. Under the original plea deal, Mueller had agreed to recommend Manafort serve the D.C. case concurrently with the Virginia sentence.

But with the plea deal now in tatters, Mueller is free to suggest Manafort serve the sentences consecutively.

Manafort’s attorneys in a Friday filing urged Ellis to review all of the recent documents in the D.C. case, including the unredacted hearing transcripts. “The information redacted from the public versions of these documents is critical to the consideration of the issues raised during that litigation,” they wrote.

In the Washington case, Jackson is scheduled to sentence Manafort on March 13.

Manafort agreed in his plea deal to waive his right to an appeal, meaning his only option to get out of prison — he’s been incarcerated since last summer on charges of witness tampering — is a presidential pardon.

Both Democrats and Republicans have both warned the president against taking that step.

But President Donald Trump appears to have not ruled the idea out. He asked his legal team to review pardon scenarios last summer during the Manafort trial and told the New York Post in a November interview that he “wouldn’t take it off the table.”

Mueller’s team has suggested that Manafort was trying to bolster his chances for a pardon when he lied during his cooperation sessions about passing polling data to a longtime aide alleged to have ties to Russian intelligence.

Andrew Weissmann, a top Mueller team associate, said during a closed-door hearing earlier this month that telling the truth would have had “negative consequences in terms of the other motive that Mr. Manafort could have, which is to at least augment his chances for a pardon.”

Democrats, groups seek to challenge Trump’s emergency declaration

Democrats and rights groups have vowed to fight US President Donald Trump‘s emergency declaration along the southern border, saying it’s an unconstitutional attempt to fund a wall without approval from Congress.

A key committee in the US House of Representatives announced on Friday it was launching an immediate investigation into President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration, saying the move to fund his promised wall at the US-Mexico border raised constitutional and statutory issues.

In a letter to Trump, Democrats who control the House Judiciary Committee asked the Republican president to make available relevant White House and Justice Department officials.

They also requested legal documents on the decision that led to the declaration, setting a deadline of next Friday.

“We believe your declaration of an emergency shows a reckless disregard for the separation of powers and your own responsibilities under our constitutional system,” said the letter signed by committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler and other top Democrats on the panel.

Trump declared a national emergency on Friday after Congress passed a spending deal to keep the government open that did not include funding for a border wall.

A national emergency, if not blocked by the courts or Congress, would allow Trump to dip into funds politicians had approved for other purposes to build a border wall.

‘We’ll use every remedy available’

But the top two Democrats in Congress said they will use “every remedy available” to oppose Trump’s declaration.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Friday that they will take action “in the Congress, in the courts and in the public”.

They called Trump’s declaration unlawful, adding that it would “shred the Constitution” by usurping Congress’s power to control spending.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced its intention to sue less than an hour after the White House released the text of Trump’s declaration that the “current situation at the southern border presents a border security and humanitarian crisis that threatens core national security interests and constitutes a national emergency”.

BREAKING: We’re suing President Trump over today’s blatantly illegal declaration of a national emergency.

There is no emergency. This is an unconstitutional power grab that hurts American communities. We’ll see him in court.

— ACLU (@ACLU) February 15, 2019

The coming legal fight seems likely to hinge on two main issues: whether the president can declare a national emergency to build a border wall in the face of Congress’s refusal to give him all the money he wanted; and whether federal law allows the Defense Department to take money from some congressionally approved military construction projects to pay for wall construction.

The Pentagon has so far not said which projects might be affected.

National Emergencies Act of 1976

Trump relied on the National Emergencies Act of 1976, which Congress adopted as a way to put some limits on presidential use of national emergencies. The act requires a president to notify Congress publicly of the national emergency and to report every six months.

The law also says the president must renew the emergency every year, simply by notifying Congress. The House and Senate also can revoke a declaration by majority vote, though it would take a two-thirds vote by each house to override an expected presidential veto.

Beyond that, though, the law doesn’t say what constitutes a national emergency or impose any other limits on the president.

The discretion afforded to the president could make it hard to persuade courts to rule that Trump exceeded his authority in declaring a border emergency.

“He’s the one who gets to make the call. We can’t second-guess it,” said John Eastman, a professor of constitutional law at the Chapman University School of Law.

Courts often are reluctant to look beyond the justifications the president included in his proclamation, Ohio State University law professor Peter Shane said on a call organised by the liberal American Constitution Society.

But other legal experts said the facts are powerfully arrayed against the president. They include government statistics showing a decades-long decline in irregular border crossings as well as Trump’s rejection of a deal last year that would have provided more than the nearly $1.4bn he got for border security in the budget agreement he signed Thursday.

Opponents of the declaration also are certain to use Trump’s own words at his Rose Garden news conference Friday to argue that there is no emergency on the border.

“I could do the wall over a longer period of time,” Trump said. “I didn’t need to do this, but I’d rather do it much faster.”

ACLU executive director Anthony Romero said Trump’s remarks are an admission that there is no national emergency. “He just grew impatient and frustrated with Congress,” Romero said in a statement that also said the rights group would file a lawsuit next week.

Beyond the challenge to Trump’s authority to declare an emergency, lawsuits also are expected to focus on the military construction project law that allows the re-allocation of money in a national emergency.

Eastman said he doubts that the Supreme Court would try to interfere with Trump’s decision to send the military to the border and then authorise the use of money from other Defense Department construction projects to build miles of a border wall.

“The president is authorized to make those judgments, not some judge in San Francisco,” Eastman said.

But the ACLU’s suit will argue that Congress allowed for flexibility in using money it appropriated for projects needed to support the emergency use of the military forces, like overseas military airfields in wartime.

Danny Ferry Reportedly Named Pelicans Interim GM to Replace Dell Demps

The New Orleans Pelicans reportedly have named Danny Ferry interim general manager, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Per Wojnarowski, the team fired GM Dell Demps Friday after nine years with the team.

Ferry had been a consultant for the Pelicans this season after spending time as the GM of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks.

Assistant general manager David Booth was also reportedly considered a candidate to lead the organization on an interim basis.

Ferry spent 13 years in the NBA as a player before serving as a GM in two different stints.

He worked with the Cavaliers from 2005-10, building up the squad into a contender during LeBron James’ first run with the team. The squad made the playoffs in all five years he was in charge, reaching the NBA Finals in 2007.

The GM was fired one month before James left the organization for the Miami Heat.

From 2012-14, Ferry ran the Hawks to help build a squad that eventually reached the Eastern Conference Finals. Most notably, he signed Paul Millsap and drafted Dennis Schroeder while trading away Joe Johnson.

He stepped down following a leave of absence after making racist remarks on a conference call.

The Pelicans have a lot of decisions to make going forward, most notably how to handle Anthony Davis after the superstar requested a trade. However, the organization will likely want to hire a full-time GM before making a move of this magnitude.
