Nigerians lament election delays – and the costs

Abuja, Nigeria – Okiti Erhovwo, a physiologist and relationship coach, planned his wedding for March 9 after considering the scheduled dates of the general elections.

The presidential and legislative elections were to take place on February 16 and the state governorship on March 2.

But the postponement announced on Saturday of the governorship election to March 9 has forced him to cancel his marriage ceremony.

“It’s disheartening to say the least that after making preparations and putting logistics in a place for our wedding … elections have been postponed to the same wedding date. It’s devastating. So sad,” Erhovwo told Al Jazeera.

Besides dealing with the disappointment, he now has to make new arrangements to marry his fiance, Eminence Agbechoma, who took the announcement even harder.

“There’s no one that would be excited at such sudden news. She felt sad, the family felt sad. But our hope is that God will do that which he, God, has set out to do and he that started this good work would surely complete it,” Erhovwo said.

Economic impact

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the postponement of polls early Saturday following an emergency meeting in capital, Abuja.

INEC said it needed more time to ensure a free and fair vote.

Many Nigerians who stayed up late to follow proceedings were angered by the decision.

Social media has become a platform to complain about the economic implications of the vote delay by a week.

Voters can only cast their ballots in places where they are registered by INEC, or they must seek a transfer to their preferred voting centres.

Some Nigerians travelled hundreds of kilometres to vote and the postponement – just a few hours prior to the opening of the polls – has left some stranded.

Despite the inconvenience, some Nigerians are willing to pay the travel costs again.

Economic fears mount over Nigeria election delay

“For us, this election is very crucial and people want to demonstrate their faith in democracy by participating in deciding their future,” businessman Pascal Metuh told Al Jazeera.

Some businesses and offices are still shut.

“This is a loss of business to the economy, which is not good news for economic performance,” economist Aliyu Audu told Al Jazeera.

“The effects will be felt in the short term by businesses’ loss of revenue until the economy picks up after the election,” Audu said.

‘Grave implications’

Some who had to reschedule their plans are also worried about extra costs incurred by the delay.

“It’s certainly going to have a grave economic implication considering the fact that initial logistics that have been made took swell sums of money,” lamented Erhovwo, the husband-to-be.

“And due to the sudden election postponement – which coincided with the wedding date – money has to be made available again for those logistics in preparation for a new date.”

Nigerians are never quick to demand any form of compensation from the government when policy changes cause them financial losses.

This time is no different.

“I wouldn’t consider any form of compensation from INEC because this thing is not just about money. A whole lot has been invested into the planning. Would they also compensate for the mental resources and time that went into the planning? Of course not,” Erhovwo said.

The ruling All Progressives Congress and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party have both criticised the delay.

Federal judge says Roger Stone could be jailed after Instagram post

Roger Stone

“Please inform the Court that the photograph and comment today was improper and should not have been posted,” Roger Stone wrote in Monday night’s court filing. | Mark Wilson/Getty Images

The federal judge presiding over Roger Stone’s case said Tuesday she’s considering gagging or jailing the longtime Donald Trump associate after he posted images on Instagram targeting her.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson ordered Stone to appear at a Thursday afternoon hearing in Washington, D.C., to explain why his social media posts shouldn’t change the terms of Stone’s bond and why she shouldn’t impose harsh new restrictions on his speech.

Story Continued Below

Jackson last Friday issued an order allowing Stone to discuss special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the 2016 presidential election, so long as he does not do so around the D.C. courthouse where his case is being heard.

But the judge, an appointee of President Barack Obama, said in that order that she’d be paying close attention to Stone’s commentary and didn’t rule out changing the terms.

Stone, who faces charges of lying to Congress and obstructing its investigation into Russian election meddling, put himself in his latest predicament after posting an image of Jackson on Instagram on Monday with what appeared to be crosshairs in the corner.

He later deleted the photo and posted a new version without the crosshairs image. By the end of the evening, Stone had deleted that photo as well and his lawyers submitted a formal apology to the court.

“Please inform the Court that the photograph and comment today was improper and should not have been posted,” Stone wrote in Monday night’s court filing. “I had no intention of disrespecting the Court and humbly apologize to the court for the transgression.”

Jackson’s reactions in other Mueller-related cases could be a sign that Stone is in for a rough hearing Thursday. The same judge slapped a gag order on Paul Manafort and Rick Gates, as well as their attorneys, in the fall of 2017, just days after the special counsel’s initial indictment against the former Trump campaign chairman and his deputy. She also jailed Manafort last June — he’s remained in federal custody ever since — after prosecutors accused him of witness tampering.

Mueller’s team indicted Stone late last month on charges of lying, obstruction of justice and witness tampering and had sought a gag order on Stone out of fear his comments would impact the fairness of a trial. Stone has decried the case as a sham, calling it a “show trial” orchestrated by the “deep state” in his Instagram post.

Stone, who was released from custody on a $250,000 bond after his arrest, is currently under court restrictions that limit his travel to south Florida, New York and the Washington D.C. area. He’s also not allowed to contact any potential witnesses in his case.

Alfonso Ribeiro’s “Carlton” dance became popular when he starred as Carlton Banks on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”  Ribeiro filed to secure a copyright for the “Carlton” but was denied. The U.S. Copyright Office claims the denial is due to the dance being simple, rather than a choreographed routine.

Watch this shredder absolutely destroy some stress balls

When squeezing a stress ball can’t soothe your anxieties, maybe watching one getting shred to pieces will.

PressTube, a popular YouTube channel dedicated to the destruction of household objects and obscenely intricate “DIY” hacks, posted a video featuring a typical stress-relief tool — the shredding machine. Watch as the mechanical wonder devours everything it touches.

While it is a pretty satisfying sight to behold, it might actually be more stressful to think about how they’re going to clean out all the squishy bits afterwards.

Julia Michaels And Niall Horan Recall The Heights Of Relationship Ecstasy In Corden Duet

Getty Images

Julia Michaels brought Niall Horan to The Late Late Show With James Corden for an immensely soothing performance of “What A Time.” The duo’s chemistry was on full display in the intimate performance of the tune recalling past fiery love.

“What A Time” is all about the memories of a powerful relationship and reminiscing on the better times. On the powerful duet’s chorus, Michaels sings “I think of that night in the park, it was getting dark / And we stayed up for hours / What a time, what a time, what a time,” and it provides the stage backdrop for the experience at Corden. Michaels sits on a park bench traversing the landscape of her memory before Horan comes out and joins in on the intense recollection. The pair dance in and out of each other’s grasps, at times embracing the warmth of the other’s touch and at times preferring to give the audience a taste of the energy radiating from the stage. It ends with a fuzzy hug between the Michaels and Horan that brings the viewer back from the depths of post-relationship stress disorder, putting a lid on a mesmerizing singing and acting performance from the singers.

“What A Time” comes from Micheals’ latest EP, Inner Monologue Part 1 that came out in January. The project also includes her collaboration with Selena Gomez, “Anxiety.” Last year, Michaels’ music appeared in two films – “In This Place” in Ralph Breaks The Internet and “Heaven” in Fifty Shades Freed – and she collaborated with Trippie Redd (“Jump“) and former lovebird Lauv (“There’s No Way“).

Watch the fond performance of “What A Time” above and be prepared to get in your feelings.

Who’s who in ‘Captain Marvel’: All the characters you need to know

Listen, no one expects you to know everything about Captain Marvel going in.

It’s the first time this superherhoine has ever been on the big screen. It’s set in a period of the Marvel Cinematic Universe we haven’t really seen before (the 1990s), and features tons of new characters, races, and technologies never even alluded to in the other films.

SEE ALSO: ‘Captain Marvel’ is here to upend the Marvel formula

Still, it never hurts to be prepared. And some of these people are ones you should be familiar with already. And don’t you want to be able to understand exactly what you’ve seen in all the marketing?

Here’s a spoiler-free guide to everyone you need to know in Captain Marvel

Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel

Brie Larson as Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel

Image: Chuck Zlotnick / Captain Marvel

Played by: Brie Larson

When we meet our heroine, she’s already part of an elite warrior squad called Starforce, fighting alongside the Kree – an alien race from the planet Hala. Then she returns to Earth, where she must rediscover her ordinary human past. It’s like “a classic Marvel origin story but told in reverse,” explains producer Jason Schwartz.

Though she has no memory of it, Captain Marvel, a.k.a. Carol Danvers, used to be an Air Force pilot. She seems to have gotten her powers after a near-death incident, and subsequent resuscitation by the Kree. And her forgotten history may hold the key to everything else happening in the movie.

Nick Fury

Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in Captain Marvel

Image: Film Frame / Marvel STudios

Played by: Samuel L. Jackson

If you’ve seen the other Marvel movies, you’re probably already familiar with Nick Fury as the erstwhile director of S.H.I.E.L.D. But the Nick Fury we’ll see in this one is younger, greener, less jaded – a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who’s “riding the desk” until Captain Marvel crash-lands into his life, and reveals to him that there’s a whole big universe out there.

Mar-Vell

Jude Law in Captain Marvel

Image: Chuck ZLotnick / Marvel Studios

Played by: Jude Law

Mar-Vell is the leader of Starforce, and Captain Marvel’s mentor. How exactly their dynamic drives the story, though, is being kept under tight wraps. During our visit to the set, producer Jonathan Schwartz would say only that Mar-Vell is “really important” to Carol’s origin story.

Minn-Erva

Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel

Image: CHuck Zlotnick / Marvel STudios

Played by: Gemma Chan

Minn-Erva is another standout member of Starforce, a Kree sniper who’s got something of a “playful rivalry” with Captain Marvel. “Minn-Erva doesn’t quite trust Carol,” Chan teases, “[but] as a team, they’re very efficient and they get stuff done.”

Korath

Djimon Hounsou as Korath in Captain Marvel

Image: Chuck Zlotnick / Marvel Studios

Played by: Djimon Hounsou

We’ve seen this guy before, in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Here, Korath is a high-ranking member of Starforce, but just as humorless and “machine-like,” as Hounsou puts it, as you remember.

Ronan

Lee Pace as Ronan in Captain Marvel

Image: Chuck ZLotnick / Marvel Studios

Played by: Lee Pace

Another returning face from Guardians of the Galaxy, the younger Ronan of Captain Marvel is less of a radical zealot. He “has his own role to play in the Kree military that intersects with Starforce in an interesting way,” says Schwartz.

Talos

Ben Mendelsohn as Talos in Captain Marvel

Image: Chuck Zlotnick / Marvel STudios

Played by: Ben Mendelsohn

Talos is a leader of the Skrulls, an alien race locked in bitter conflict with the Kree. The Skrulls also happen to be really good at shapeshifting, which comes in very handy for their efforts to invade Earth. For his part, Talos has infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. by impersonating a human so successfully that he’s actually Nick Fury’s boss(!).

Maria Rambeau

Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel

Image: Chuck ZLotnick / Marvel Studios

Played by: Lashana Lynch

Carol’s BFF and fellow Air Force pilot (call sign: Photon) doesn’t know where Carol has disappeared to all these years, and Carol, in turn, can’t really remember Maria at first. Still, now that Carol is back, Maria remains loyal to their old bond, and she plays a huge role in helping Carol regain her past.

Maria also happens to be the mother of Monica Rambeau, about whom more below.

Monica Rambeau

Akira Akbar as Monica Rambeau in Captain Marvel

Image: Marvel STudios

Played by: Akira Akbar

Monica is Maria’s brave 11-year-old daughter, who sees Carol as an aunt – or did, anyway, before Carol disappeared.

Though Maria’s role in all of this remains somewhat unclear, it’s worth noting that in the comics, Maria took up the Captain Marvel mantle before Carol did. Clearly, that’s not how the timeline is playing out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe… but it does seem possible Monica will have quite a lot to do going forward.

Phil Coulson

Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson in Captain Marvel

Image: Marvel STudios

Played by: Clark Gregg

Long before he was killed by Loki in The Avengers and brought back to life in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Phil Coulson was just a fresh-faced S.H.I.E.L.D. rookie who could barely get Nick Fury to learn his name.

Goose

Goose the cat in Captain Marvel

Image: Film Frame / Marvel STudios

Played by: Reggie, Archie, Rizzo, and Gonzo

Named after the Top Gun character, Goose looks like just your ordinary housecat. But there’s strong reason to believe he’s actually an alien known as a Flerken. In the comics, Flerkens look like Earth felines but boast extra features (like tentacles inside their mouths) and special powers (like the ability to hop between dimensions).

Supreme Intelligence (maybe)

Annette Bening in Captain Marvel

Annette Bening in Captain Marvel

Image: Marvel STudios

Played by: Annette Bening

Marvel isn’t saying who Annette Bening is playing in Captain Marvel, but signs point to the Supreme Intelligence, which in the comics is an AI that rules the Kree. The character is confirmed to appear in the film, and Bening is seen in a recent trailer recounting how she made Carol Danvers “one of us,” i.e., one of the Kree. Plus, Bening totally has the gravitas to pull off an alien overlord.

Captain Marvel is in theaters March 8.

YouPorn launches new app for more discreet mobile viewing

YouPorn is getting in on the app game.

The adult website is launching their own app that says will bring quicker load times, more privacy, and all the YouPorn content you want on your phone without cluttering up your browser history for someone to snoop on.

In a statement on the release of the app, Charlie Hughes, Vice President of YouPorn, said, “Not only will users gain quicker and more convenient access, but most importantly are given an even more secure and private way to explore content using open technologies without needing platform specific app marketplaces or cumbersome side-loading certificates which could make one’s devices less secure.”

Online porn goes mobile

The site boasts (SFW link) that the app will provide 50 percent quicker loading times and the same content you’d access on the YouPorn site itself, including filtering tools and customizable playlists. In addition, a spokesperson for YouPorn told Mashable via email, “Because we use strong encryption and run outside the web browser, a users’ search and browsing history are not available to view by other users.”

Of course, this being porn-related, the app won’t be showing up in Apple or Google Play’s app store so you have to do a bit of a work around (site SFW but beware that URL) to get there. One other note: if you’re on an iPhone, you’ll need to utilize your Safari web browser to get the app to load instead of Chrome or other browsers.

But once you go through the pretty painless setup process, boom: you’re all set. And the company says the app will keep itself up to date so there’s no need for users to do their own updating once you’ve added the app to your home screen.

Of course, don’t forget to also set yourself up with a VPN because everyone knows that you should always use protection. You’ll feel better and more secure later.
