Political drama in Thailand as long-delayed election nears

Bangkok, Thailand – With Thailand‘s long-delayed elections just over a month away, a court ruling is expected to deal a major blow to parties loyal to ousted ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and tip the scales in favour of the country’s military government – even as many voters appear weary of the generals after five years of army rule.

The Constitutional Court on Wednesday is expected to dissolve Thai Raksa Chart following the party’s shock but failed nomination of Princess Ubolratana – the king’s older sister – as its candidate for prime minister in the March 24 polls.

Pheu Thai, the main pro-Thaksin party, may also later find itself be guilty by association, according to political analyst Supalak Ganjanakhundee, managing editor at The Nation.

“It may not be too difficult to link the two parties together. Some members of Thai Raska Chart came from the Pheu Thai party,” he said. “I anticipate the military will find some measure to block Pheu Thai [before the election] because it’s seen as a threat.”

The Pheu Thai party declined to comment.

INSIDE STORY: What does democracy look like in Thailand? (25:05)

Two weeks ago, Thai Raksa Chart stunned Thailand when it put forward Princess Ubolratana, who became a commoner after marrying a US citizen in 1972, as its candidate for prime minister.

Although Ubolratana returned to Thailand after getting a divorce, and is now known as a TV star and actress, the monarchy is said to be above politics and is protected by strictly enforced laws on lese majeste.

Thailand’s Election Commission swiftly disqualified her candidacy, saying the nomination was unconstitutional and hostile towards the monarchy. The move came after King Vajiralongkorn said it was “improper and highly inappropriate” for a royal family member to delve into fractious Thai politics.

Meanwhile this week, Thai police said they were also seeking the prosecution of Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, the leader of Future Forward – a party pitched at younger voters making its electoral debut next month – over a speech shared online in June last year criticising the military.

‘Total control’

Parties connected to Thaksin, a telecoms tycoon, have dominated Thai politics for nearly two decades.

But two of the 19 coups that have taken place since the country became a constitutional monarchy in 1932, have replaced pro-Thaksin governments.

Thailand may ban party that nominated princess for PM (2:35)

Pheu Thai won the last elections in 2011 but was usurped by a coup three years later when the current military government – the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) – seized power from Yingluck Shinawatra, the sister of Thaksin.

Thai Rak Thai Party, Pheu Thai’s predecessor, was dissolved in 2007 following the ousting of Thaksin himself in a coup a year earlier. The party’snext incarnation, Palang Prachachon, was dissolved by the court in 2008.

“We don’t know whether we’ll be able to make it to the polls or not,” Umesh Pandey, member of the Thai Raksa Chart party.

“We are fighting against a regime that seized power five years ago. They have total control of how things are run.”

Prayuth, the head of Thailand’s military government, will contest the elections as a candidate for prime minister [File: EPA]

After taking control of the country and tightening the military’s hold over politics, General Prayuth Chan-ocha is now trying to also become an elected prime minister through the Phalang Pracharat Party.

The 2017 military-drafted constitution almost assures the generals continued control of the National Assembly.

The 500 members of the lower house will be chosen by both direct vote – 350 seats – and party list – 150 seats – from across the country’s 77 provinces.

The military will appoint a panel to select all 250 members of the upper house so only 126 elected members would need to support Prayuth as prime minister and extend the military’s hold on power.

Thailand election: Many hope vote ends military rule (2:36)

Red, yellow and orange

Overall, there are 77 political parties that have registered for the polls.

The two oldest are the Democrat and Mahachon parties, but most are newcomers – like Future Forward -hoping to appeal to voters no longer interested in the divisive colour-coded politics of the past.

Future Forward’s orange triangular logo is said to be the result of mixing yellow-shirt royalists and red-shirt Thaksin supporters. Its leader, Thanathorn, a successful business tycoon, has been likened to Thaksin.

“Our main policy is to amend the constitution,” said Sirikanya Tansakun, policy director at Future Forward. “We want military reform to stop this endless cycle of military coups and disruptions in governance.”

Like Future Forward, Pheu Thai’s “Next Gen” and the Democrats “New Dem” social media campaigns are targeting young Thai voters with videos and messages.

They are all vying for the backing of nearly seven million first-time voters to put an end to one of Thailand’s longest periods of army rule, pledging to reverse the military government’s policies.

Chulalongkorn University student Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal is one of them.

The 22-year-old made headlines in 2016 after a public spat with Prayuth over his refusal to kowtow along with other university students before a statue of King Rama V.

“I will go campaigning to get more people to vote,” he told Al Jazeera.

“I support the democratic camp. I think young people are definitely going to vote and kick out the NCPO.”

SpaceX had another successful launch on Thursday night, despite some tough conditions.

Its Falcon 9 launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, where a trio of spacecraft, including a moon lander, came along for the ride.

SEE ALSO: Elon Musk says Mars round trip could cost only $100,000 one day

Lift off took place at 8:45 p.m. ET, at the beginning of the 32-minute launch window.

Bad weather threatened the recovery of the first-stage booster, but after 8-and-a-half minutes following launch, the booster successfully landed on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

It’s the third time this booster has been launched and landed, and marks SpaceX’s 34th successful landing. The reuse of boosters is part of SpaceX’s plan to make spaceflight cheaper.

Just after 34 minutes, the Israeli moon lander Beresheet, which is owned by a nonprofit called SpaceIL, was deployed to orbit. It’s set to be the smallest spacecraft to ever land on the Moon. Weighing 1,322 pounds (600 kg), it’s also the first spacecraft from an Israeli entity and the first privately-funded spacecraft to reach the lunar surface. Previously, only the U.S., U.S.S.R, and China have landed spacecraft on the moon.

It’ll take the craft seven weeks to reach the moon. Once landed, Beresheet’s mission will be to transmit photo and videos of the surface, as well as to conduct scientific measurements.

Also on board, was Indonesian telecommunications satellite Nusantara Satu, and an experimental spacecraft called S5, created by the Air Force Research Laboratory. They were deployed shortly after, at 44 minutes after launch.

YouTube’s pedophilia problem: more than 400 channels deleted as advertisers flee over child predators

YouTube is in crisis mode yet again.

On Wednesday night, the online video giant announced it had banned more than 400 channels and disabled comments on tens of millions of videos following a growing YouTube controversy concerning child exploitation. However, many major brands, like Disney, AT&T, Nestle, and Fortnite are jumping ship an halting all YouTube advertising in its wake.

Over the weekend, a YouTube video highlighting child predators’ rampant use of the platform had gone viral. YouTuber Matt Watson posted the video walking users through how a simple YouTube search can easily uncover “soft” pedophilia rings on the video service.

Child exploitation is clearly an internet-wide issue, however, Watson’s video explored how YouTube’s recommendation algorithm works to add a unique problem for the site. As shown in Watson’s viral upload, a search for popular YouTube video niches, such as “bikini haul,” leads the platform to recommend similar content to viewers. If a user clicks on a single recommended video featuring a child, the viewer can get sucked into a “wormhole,” as Watson calls it, where YouTube’s recommendation algorithm will proceed to push content to the viewer which strictly features children.

These recommended videos then become inundated with comments from child predators. Often times, these comments directly hyperlink timecodes from within the video. The linked timecodes often forwards a user to a point in the video where the minor may, innocently, be found in compromising positions. On these video pages, these commenters also share their contacts so that they can trade child pornography with other users off of YouTube’s platform.

On top of all of this, Watson pointed out that many of these videos were monetized. Basically, big brands’ advertisements were appearing right next to these comments.

The video quickly went viral on Reddit and viewers quickly started spreading the hashtag #YouTubeWakeUp across social media, urging the company to take action.

UPDATE: @YouTube @YTCreators left a comment and provided an update on what they’ve done to combat horrible people on the site in the last 48 hours.

TLDR: Disabled comments on tens of millions of videos. Terminated over 400 channels. Reported illegal comments to law enforcement. pic.twitter.com/zFHFfkX9FD

— Philip DeFranco (@PhillyD) February 21, 2019

While many popular creators covered the issue, PhillyD received a comment from the official YouTube channel after he posted his video.

“We appreciate you raising awareness of this with your fans, and that you realize all of us at YouTube are working incredibly hard to root out horrible behavior on our platform,” said YouTube in their comment.

“In the last 48 hours, beyond our normal protections we’ve disabled comments on tens of millions of videos,” the statement continued. “We’ve also terminated over 400 channels for the comments they left on videos, and reported illegal comments to law enforcement.”

This isn’t the first time YouTube has been accused of having child exploitation issues. In 2017, a slew of problematic videos were found on the platform, specifically marketed to children — often times directly on the YouTube Kids app. These videos presented popular children’s characters with adult themes, sometimes in sexually explicit fashion.

In response, YouTube overhauled its kids app and put new moderation policies in place.

SEE ALSO: This YouTube channel tracks the PewDiePie vs. T-Series subscriber battle

Advertisers have also boycotted YouTube en mass over scandals on the platform before. The cause for previous ad pullouts have ranged from issues with problems like terroristic content and racist hate speech.

In order to tackle advertisers’ concerns, YouTube has often rolled out new features so brands can control where its ads appear.

Interestingly, AT&T, one of the companies now halting ads over this latest scandal, only ended its 2-year advertising hiatus due to previous YouTube issues just last month.

YouTube’s platform changes don’t always go off without a hitch. The company has consistently made it harder for actual content creators to monetize their channels. In the wake of Logan Paul’s “suicide forest” controversy, the company instituted new requirements for YouTube Partner eligibility. These new policies, along with its latest “duplicative content” measure, have made it much harder for new YouTubers to monetize content. Big creators, like Paul, are often left unscathed by these changes.

In fact, legitimate YouTube creators have already been impacted by YouTube’s latest response to the child predators uncovered on the platform.

Popular PokĂ©mon YouTubers were swept up in the bans over “child abuse.” It’s believed that YouTube’s system to ban these types of accounts saw the term “CP,” which stands for “Combat Points” in PokĂ©mon GO, and mistook it for a popular acronym among child predators for “child pornography.” The PokĂ©mon YouTubers’ accounts have since been restored.

While dealing with child predators is a problem of its own, It’s clear that many of YouTube’s issues stem from its recommendation algorithm. Just recently, the company announced it was working on excluding certain types of conspiracy-related content from its recommended videos.

In the company’s comment to PhillyD, YouTube acknowledges that it still has a ways to go.

“There is more to be done, and we are continuing to grow our team in order to keep people safe.”

Wallace’s giant bee, world’s largest, refound by scientists

The world’s largest bee, which had not been seen by scientists since 1981, has been rediscovered by a team of conservationists and international researchers in a remote part of Indonesia.

The team found the first specimens of Megachile Pluto, an insect commonly known as Wallace’s giant bee that is roughly the size of a human thumb, in the archipelago’s North Moluccas islands last month.

On Thursday, they released images and video of a nest and its queen, saying their find was the “holy grail” of species discoveries.

“Amid such a well-documented global decline in insect diversity, it’s wonderful to discover that this iconic species is still hanging on,” said Simon Robson, a member of the team and professor at the University of Sydney.

Despite its conspicuous size, Wallace’s giant bee had not been observed in the wild since 1981, the Global Wildlife Conservation said. Several previous expeditions to the region where the bee lives failed to spot it.

BREAKING: Lost to science since 1981 and thought by some to be extinct, Wallace’s giant bee (Megachile pluto) has been rediscovered in Indonesia by an international team of scientists and conservationists. pic.twitter.com/VoDp43LRG2

— Australian Academy of Science (@Science_Academy) February 21, 2019

The announcement reignites hope that more of the region’s forests may be home to this very rare species, said the team, which includes researchers from the University of Sydney, Saint Mary’s University in Canada and Princeton University in the United States.

Female specimens of the bee can reach a length of 3.8 centimetres and have a wingspan of more than six centimetres. Males grow to about 2.3 centimetres.

“It was absolutely breathtaking to see this ‘flying bulldog’ of an insect that we weren’t sure existed anymore,” said Clay Bolt, a natural history photographer, who took the first photos and video of the giant bees alive.

“To see how beautiful and big the species is in real life, to hear the sound of its giant wings thrumming as it flew past my head, was just incredible,” Bolt said. “My dream is to now use this rediscovery to elevate this bee to a symbol of conservation in this part of Indonesia.”

The insect is named after British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, who formulated the theory of evolution by natural selection before Charles Darwin’s published contributions.

Wallace collected the species for the first time in 1858 while exploring the Indonesian island of Bacan.

The bee was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1981 by Adam Messer, a US entomologist, who found six nests on the island of Bacan and two other nearby islands. It had not been seen again since.

Eli Wyman, a researcher from Princeton University, said Messer’s find had given some insight, “but we still know next to nothing about this extraordinary insect”.

“I hope this rediscovery will spark research that will give us a deeper understanding of this unique bee and inform any future efforts to protect it from extinction,” Wyman said.

Global Wildlife Conservation, a Texas-based non-profit organisation that runs a Search for Lost Species programme, put Wallace’s giant bee on its list of the “top 25 most wanted lost species”.

Researchers said forest destruction in Indonesia for agriculture, threatens the habitat for this species and many others.

Between 2001 and 2017, Indonesia lost 15 percent of its tree cover, according to Global Forest Watch.

Samsung’s annoying Bixby button is finally customizable

Samsung’s new Galaxy S10 series is the company’s third lineup of flagship phones to come with Bixby built-in.

But the phones will be the first to let you actually change what that Bixby button does, addressing what has long been one of Samsung’s most frustrating features.

The company confirmed the change in a blog post, noting that the S10 will be the first of Samsung’s phones to have “Bixby Key Customization,” which lets users change their Bixby settings so that pressing the Bixby button once or twice will launch a third-party app of their choice. Samsung also said it would extend the feature to its earlier phones with Bixby, including the S8, S9, and Note9, in a future software update.

SEE ALSO: Why won’t Samsung let us see its foldable phone?

The dedicated Bixby button has been a major annoyance since it was first introduced with the S8. The voice assistant, which wasn’t even available when the S8 first launched, has been widely panned as inferior to Google Assistant and Alexa. Yet the presence of a hardware button on the side of your phone almost guaranteed that you would accidentally press it at inopportune moments. Not only that, but Samsung intentionally disabled the ability to remap the button to do something else.

Not anymore, though. With “Bixby Key Customization” feature, you can designate a single or double tap of the button to launch any app you want, including Google Assistant to Alexa.

As The Verge points out, this unfortunately doesn’t mean you can erase Bixby entirely. If you customize one of the two shortcuts as a non-Bixby app, the other shortcut will still launch the assistant. But, short of disabling the button entirely, it’s a decent compromise.

Space Jam 2 will hit theaters July 16, 2021, according to Pamela McClintock and Aaron Couch of the Hollywood Reporter.

LeBron James will fill the shoes left by Michael Jordan, who starred in the original in 1996. In the first film, Jordan teamed with famous Looney Tunes characters to defeat a team of monsters that had stolen the talent of NBA players.

The sequel had been rumored for years. The Hollywood Reporter‘s Rebecca Ford reported in July 2015 that James and his production company SpringHill Entertainment had signed with Warner Bros., which owns the rights to Looney Tunes. A team of writers began working on the Space Jam 2 script in May 2016.

Last September, SpringHill Entertainment confirmed Space Jam 2 was formally in the works.
