The ‘absolute unit’ UK museum found a cute lost bat, named him Merlin

The Museum of English Rural Life is already internet-famous because of its animal tweets. The thicc ram has nothing on a live bat, however.

This story actually started back in Nov. 2018 when a bat was discovered just chilling out near the ceiling of the museum’s book store. The museum called in an expert: retired librarian and licensed batworker Rose-Ann Movsovic — also a museum volunteer.

Seriously, she saves bats and nurses them back to health in a spare room and then releases them back into the wild.

Our team is full of secret X Men.

— The Museum of English Rural Life (@TheMERL) February 24, 2019

What a rad hobby. Movsovic actually tweeted out a photo of the adorable little critter back in November, but that was all we were told at the time.

Now, the museum — or MERL, as it’s often called — is ready to tell the whole story. First, the bat was inspected. Closely. NSFW?

SEE ALSO: Museums are sending each other their best duck pics on Twitter

That examination is actually what led to the exact species of bat being identified. It turns out these little rascals are relative newcomers to the UK. As MERL notes, they hail from the Baltic states and have migrated to Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

We thought the bat was a type of pipistrelle, and after examining the ratio of forearm to 5th finger, and wing venation, it turns out to be a Nathusius’ pipistrelle. pic.twitter.com/AhPtPVIGec

— The Museum of English Rural Life (@TheMERL) February 24, 2019

As of Feb. 2019, little Merlin is still in the care of Movsovic. He’s apparently participating in a project aimed at helping researchers better understand the species’ migratory habits.

But! Under Movsovic’s care he’s also been learning how to live as a normal-sized adult bat that can fly. He was an underweight baby bat when the museum found him, you see.

The latest update on Merlin is that:

‘it took him ages to get the hang of self feeding but there’s no stopping him now so he’s put on rather a lot of weight and needs a bit more flying practice before we can release him.

— The Museum of English Rural Life (@TheMERL) February 24, 2019

Hopefully Merlin will be free soon. Until then, we get to marvel at this adorable little wingmouse with his tiny button nose and his very relatable money stress.

Since you’re here, follow MERL’s advice and take a few minutes to learn more about bats, why they’re important, and how you can help ensure their healthy continued existence.

Lakers Bus Reportedly Left Without Luke Walton After Loss to Pelicans

The Los Angeles Lakers were supposed to be a team that would one day challenge the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference after they signed LeBron James this past offseason.

Instead, they’ve devolved into a team that can’t even remember to bring its own coach along on the postgame bus ride.

As David M. Grubb of Crescent City Sports shared on Twitter, the Lakers’ team bus left without head coach Luke Walton and had to come back for him following Saturday’s 128-115 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans at Smoothie King Arena:

David M. Grubb @DMGrubb

So this was interesting. I was talking to some SKC staffers I know as the Lakers’ team bus is pulling off. Suddenly, Luke Walton comes around the corner. Bus gone. It had to come back for the coach. Damn shame. https://t.co/uy0HX7XYIS

This is the latest in a series of unfortunate headlines for Walton this season. In November, Adrian Wojnarowski and Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com reported Lakers president of basketball operations Magic Johnson “admonished” him, while Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported earlier this month there was a “heated scene” between the coach and multiple veterans after a loss against the Warriors.

James also may not be Walton’s biggest fan, as ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan said on the Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective podcast (h/t Chicco Nacion of theScore) in January: “It’s clear to me, and probably to you, Brian, that LeBron’s camp would prefer a coaching change—they’re not too subtle about that. Not LeBron, but all the people around LeBron. There’s plenty of them and they’ve made it known.”

For now, Walton is still the coach, and the Lakers remain on the outside of the playoff picture looking in as the 10th seed in the West. They are 3.5 games behind the Los Angeles Clippers for the No. 8 seed and two games behind the ninth-seeded Sacramento Kings.

Company is GPS-tracking chickens to ensure they’re healthy and organic

GoGo Chicken will monitor poultry and let customers monitor the animal's diet and exercise.

Your future chicken dinner is about to get its very own Fitbit-like device.

Chinese online insurance company ZhongAn Online has developed a new GPS tracker for poultry called GoGo Chicken, according to the Wall Street Journal. The device fits around the animal’s leg while sensors monitor information like the chicken’s environment, what it eats, and how much exercise it gets.

SEE ALSO: Flat Earthers plan a cruise that uses charts of a round planet to navigate

ZhongAn refers to the product as “blockchain farming” because it utilizes the real-time public record technology popularized by cryptocurrency to store its data on the chickens.

The information GoGo Chicken collects isn’t just for those tending to the fowl. Consumers will be able to monitor the chicken’s day-to-day life via a mobile app as well.

The hope is that the GPS tracking device will help prevent food safety related problems. In the event an issue does arise, the data tracked by the devices could help find the source of the problem. However, ZhongAn does also have its own use for the technology. As an insurance company that covers the agriculture industry, it’s looking to reduce its own risk and liability with the data it collects.

In a report, NPR says that 100,000 chickens are already wearing the monitoring device. ZhongAn says the devices will be found on 2,500 farms in China by 2020. NPR also reports that the company is developing facial-recognition technology for poultry so customers can make sure that they’re eating the same chicken that they picked from the farm.

In the near future, consumers will be able to confirm their free-range organic chicken actually freely roamed around outdoors thanks to a GPS tracking device strapped to it.

LG G8 ThinQ hands-on: Are hand gestures the new gimmick?

Struggling phone maker LG isn’t throwing in the towel just yet. The Korean electronics giant used Mobile World Congress to announce its new flagship LG G8 ThinQ Android smartphone.

At first glance, the G8 ThinQ looks a lot like the G7 ThinQ, but there’s more to their similar metal and glass constructions. Housed inside of the notch is a new camera sensor that recognizes hand gesture and can be used to control features like the volume, calls, and media playback.

SEE ALSO: Huawei’s Mate X is the most promising foldable phone yet

By all accounts, the LG G8 ThinQ is a premium phone with flagship performance. The phone’s glass and metal design is as good as any other and the specs all check out.

The G8 ThinQ has a 6.1-inch OLED screen with QHD+ (3,120 x 1,440) resolution. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chip and 6GB of RAM.

There’s 128GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot for adding up to 512GB of additional storage. And the 3,500 mAh battery is reasonably large and supports QuickCharge 3.0 and wireless charging.

The 6.1-inch OLED screen is big and bright.

The 6.1-inch OLED screen is big and bright.

Image: RAYMOND WONG/MASHABLE

On the rear, there’s a dual camera system consisting of a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens with f/1.5 aperture and a secondary 16-megapixel ultra-wide lens with f/1.9 aperture. Both cameras looked pretty capable from what I could tell in my brief hands-on with the phone.

The cameras are flush with the back! No bump! There's also a fingerprint sensor on the back.

The cameras are flush with the back! No bump! There’s also a fingerprint sensor on the back.

Image: RAYMOND WONG/MASHABLE

And the G8 ThinQ’s “Crystal Sound OLED” display also doubles as a receiver by vibrating sound off the glass so there’s no need to have a cutout for one at the top. Other phones like the Xiaomi Mi Mix used the same “piezoelectric” vibrating display sound technology, but few have done them well. Phone calls through the Crystal Sound OLED screen didn’t sound as tinny compared to other phones with the same tech, though.

The G8 still has a headphone jack!

Image: RAYMOND WONG/MASHABLE

All of these are great features that make the G8 ThinQ competitive with other 2019 flagship phones. But that special camera inside of the notch is something entirely new altogether.

Called a “Z camera,” the “time of flight” (ToF) sensor is able to capture information along a z-axis to better recognize what’s happening in 3D space. LG says the camera is a miniaturized version of the special camera used inside of devices with Google’s Tango technology used for augmented reality experiences.

The Z camera's hiding in the notch next to the 8-megapixel selfie camera.

The Z camera’s hiding in the notch next to the 8-megapixel selfie camera.

Image: RAYMOND WONG/MASHABLE

With the special camera, LG’s added two features to the G8 ThinQ that it thinks helps it stand out from other phones.

The first is enhanced biometric security. You can still use the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone to unlock the G8 ThinQ or the 2D-based face unlock from the 8-megapixel selfie camera. But with the Z camera, you can also unlock the phone with your hand.

After setup, LG says the Z camera is able to recognize your unique vein patterns by extracting images of the hemoglobin within your blood. LG says these vein patterns are incredibly difficult to forge compared to fingerprints, which can be photographed with high-resolution cameras.

The second unique feature the Z camera allows for is hand gestures or “Air Motion” as LG has branded it. When you hover your hand above the camera, the phone displays controls at the top of the screen. These can be two icons that let you switch between apps using a waving gesture to the left or right. Or they can be as simple as buttons to control playback or volume.

<img alt="Is anyone asking for hand gestures on their phone?" class="" data-caption="Is anyone asking for hand gestures on their phone?" data-credit-name="RAYMOND WONG/MASHABLE

Is anyone asking for hand gestures on their phone?

Image: RAYMOND WONG/MASHABLE

It’s a neat idea, except the hand gestures aren’t easy to use. The camera requires your hand be a minimum six inches away. But that’s not even the worst of things. You also need to drop your fingers down into the shape of a claw before you can wave in any direction.

And even then, the Z camera had trouble recognizing my clawed hand.

Making a claw is no fun.

Making a claw is no fun.

Image: RAYMOND WONG/MASHABLE

LG let a dozen or so tech journalists — geeks who eat these kinds of new innovations up — try the Air Motion out and nearly everyone including myself found the hand gestures unintuitive and cumbersome.

Here you can switch between the music app and YouTube with a wave.

Here you can switch between the music app and YouTube with a wave.

Image: raymond wong/mashable

But again, does this even look fun to use?

I struggled to get the Air Motion gestures to work and gave up in the end.

I struggled to get the Air Motion gestures to work and gave up in the end.

Image: RAYMOND WONG/MASHABLE

At the end of my brief hands-on time with the LG G8 ThinQ, I couldn’t help but ignore the special Z camera. Maybe it’ll work better on the launch device, but from what I saw it wasn’t ready for primetime. To be honest, the feature isn’t worth the headache and you’re better off just tapping the screen.

Like foldable phones, the feature is new and different, but it doesn’t really make using your phone better. I can see it being useful in situations where you don’t want to or can’t touch the screen with your hands (like when you’re coming out of a shower or cooking in the kitchen), but wouldn’t voice controls work better?

Manchester City Beat Chelsea 4-3 on Penalties in 2019 League Cup Final

GLYN KIRK/Getty Images

Manchester City won the first domestic trophy of the 2018-19 English football season Sunday as they beat Chelsea 4-3 on penalties after a 0-0 draw at Wembley.

Chelsea were much more competitive in this contest than the 6-0 shellacking at the hands of City a fortnight ago, and while Pep Guardiola’s side dominated the ball in the first period, the Blues’ defence was up to the challenge.

The second period saw Chelsea offer more of an attacking threat, with Eden Hazard always dangerous on the counter-attack. N’Golo Kante and Pedro spurned excellent opportunities for the Blues.

At the end of an uninspired extra time, there were extraordinary scenes when Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to be substituted despite his manager’s wishes.

Eventually, he stayed on, and despite making a smart stop from Leroy Sane in the shootout, he was unable to do enough, with Raheem Sterling scoring the decisive penalty for City.

Here’s the remarkable dispute between Kepa and Sarri:

Sky Sports Football @SkyFootball

😳 – Have you EVER seen anything like it!?

Maurizio Sarri tries to substitute Kepa Arrizabalaga for Willy Caballero, but Kepa refuses to come off and Sarri is absolutely FURIOUS! 😡 https://t.co/Q81v6ry3Kk

Sarri Must Continue to Adapt Style to Save Blues Job

Chelsea’s performance was far from perfect Sunday, although supporters will at least be encouraged by the manner in which Sarri seemed to learn from the 6-0 loss the Blues suffered to City.

While they pressed high and left spaces for City to exploit at the Etihad Stadium, there was cohesion and caution about the way in which Chelsea approached the match here. As a result, the game was a lot more competitive.

At half-time, ESPN FC’s Liam Twomey commented on how different the approach had been from Sarri’s side:

Liam Twomey @liam_twomey

HT Chelsea 0-0 Man City. If this isn’t a ‘Plan B’ from Sarri, I don’t know what is. They’ve successfully stifled the champions & withstood plenty of pressure. Passing too sloppy on the counter, but an encouraging half #cfc #mcfc

In order to keep his job, you sense the Chelsea manager will need to continue showing he can be flexible in his approach.

Clearly, it’s important to have an identity, but at times this season, Sarri has been too strongly welded to his renowned style. On occasions, especially against teams as good as City, some concessions need to be made.

If Sarri can continue to show a little more pragmatism in the coming weeks, then perhaps there is a way back for him yet.

De Bruyne, Silva Must Improve After Fernandinho Injury

Fernandinho was forced off late in the game for City, and that will be a worry for Guardiola given the team’s involvement in three more competitions.

With the Brazilian potentially set for a spell on the sidelines, the City boss will need to find someone to plug the gap at the base of the team’s midfield. In addition, he will want to see more from Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva in their more advanced positions.

The former has yet to hit his best form following a couple of injury layoffs this season, while the latter has been below his usual high standards over the last few weeks.

Kieran Canning of Agence France-Presse noted how much the duo struggled against Chelsea:

Kieran Canning @KieranCanning

De Bruyne and David Silva well off it so far. Gundogan and Sane surely a must again for Pep off the bench

Jack Gaughan of MailOnline said De Bruyne has been trying a little too hard to make things happen:

Jack Gaughan @Jack_Gaughan

De Bruyne similar to Wednesday night. Forcing it a bit.

Arguably City’s best two central midfielders this season have been Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan. The latter appears the most likely man to drop into a deeper berth should Fernandinho spend some time in the treatment room.

At this key point in the campaign, Guardiola will be looking to experienced figures like De Bruyne and Silva to shine in big games. After both were hauled off here after poor performances, it’s imperative they improve with the UEFA Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup still to challenge for.

What’s Next?

Both sides are back in action in the Premier League on Wednesday. City, who trail leaders Liverpool by a point, will host West Ham United, while Chelsea welcome London rivals Tottenham Hotspur to Stamford Bridge.

T-Series surpassed Pewdiepie in YouTube subscribers and no one noticed

For a short period of time, PewDiePie was no longer YouTube's most-subscribed channel.
For a short period of time, PewDiePie was no longer YouTube’s most-subscribed channel.

A new “most-subscribed” channel was finally crowned on YouTube, albeit briefly.

After a nearly half-year long race, internet personality PewDiePie has finally been dethroned as YouTube’s most subscribed channel by Bollywood music video channel T-Series. The video production company surpassed the YouTuber in subscribers for the very first time on Friday, Feb. 22.

However, the India-based T-Series’ reign as the new “most-subscribed” channel on YouTube didn’t last for very long.

“For roughly 8 minutes, as a result of a YouTube audit, T-Series was ahead of PewDiePie (by a max of about 2000 [subscribers]),” a spokesperson with the social media analytics company SocialBlade confirmed in a statement to Mashable.

YouTube routinely audits accounts to make sure stats, like video views and channel subscribers, are accurate and only reflect real, actual users. One of these automated audits hit PewDiePie’s account at an opportune moment for T-Series. The creator lost around 20,000 subscribers at once on Friday, putting the Bollywood production company ahead for a short period of time.

Felix Kjellberg aka PewDiePie had sat atop the most-subscribed YouTube rankings for more than 5 years, consecutively, since Dec. 22, 2013 before being overtaken by T-Series for a short time. The YouTuber quickly regained the lead once again and has a more than 110,000 subscriber lead over T-Series at publishing time.

The pivotal moment came and went so quickly that barely anyone seems to have noticed, aside from social media chatter from some of PewDiePie and T-Series’ most hardcore fans. A few recordings from YouTube channels that have been tracking the two channels’ subscriber counts captured real-time proof.

SEE ALSO: YouTube’s pedophilia problem: more than 400 channels deleted as advertisers flee over child predators

PewDiePie and T-Series have been engaged in a race to the top of the YouTube subscriber rankings for months. The creator first uploaded a video warning his fans that he was about to lose his “most subscribed” YouTube channel title last summer. At the time, T-Series was projected to overtake him in October. However, PewDiePie’s galvanized fanbase propelled the YouTuber to new subscriber heights. Thanks to his rivalry with the Bollywood production company, PewDiePie went from around 66 million subscribers to his current near 90 million subscribers in just six months.

But, due to a persistent steady gain in subscribers from T-Series’ channel as well as the growth of India’s internet-using population, its only a matter of time before T-Series once again surpasses PewDiePie. Eventually, the channel will even pass PewDiePie for good.

Mashable has reached out to YouTube for comment and will update this post when we hear back.

As announced, LG has launched its first ever 5G phone: The LG V50 ThinQ. But unlike Huawei’s radical, foldable 5G phone, which launched earlier today, the V50 is essentially a proper successor of LG’s V40, only with 5G capabilities.

It does come with an accessory that sets it apart, though: A case with a secondary, 6.2-inch OLED screen.

The LG V50 ThinQ is a 6.4-inch phone with Qualcomm’s latest and greatest chip, the Snapdragon 855. It comes with 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a 4,000mAh battery and a triple rear camera (with 12/12/16-megapixel sensors) and a dual, 8/5-megapixel selfie camera.

This makes it a bit more powerful than LG’s G8 ThinQ, but that’s pretty much what you’d expect from the V50 — LG’s V series is typically slightly more powerful than the G series.  To sweeten the deal, though, LG has added a few extra features, such as DTS:X surround sound, and a vapor chamber heat dissipation system.

There’s also an optional case for the V50 that comes with a secondary, 6.2-inch OLED display with a 2,160×1,080 pixel resolution. It runs on the phone’s battery, plays nice with selected games, and is generally designed as a multitasking feature. It’s an interesting take on the foldable phones trend: It’s not as fancy, but having the option to leave it at home when you don’t need it and just use the phone as a regular soap bar phone has its advantages.

LG thinks the V50's secondary screen will be a great addition for gamers.

As for 5G, LG says it offers “20 times” the speeds of 4G, though it’ll ultimately depend on your ISP’s network. Sprint is one of LG’s partners for the launch, and the company promises “consistent connection and lower latency with virtually buffer-less streaming” when the phone launches on the network, which should happen this spring.

Frankly, the feature I’m most interested in is the new, 4,000mAh battery. LG makes great phones, but battery life has always been lacking; perhaps the V50 is the phone that changes this notion.

Mobile World Congress is a show primarily for phone announcements, but Microsoft used it to unveil its brand new augmented reality headset: the HoloLens 2.

The new headset is sleeker-looking, more comfortable, and more powerful than the first generation Hololens that debuted in 2016. But most importantly, HoloLens 2 has a much wider field of view (FOV) — more than double the original HoloLens — to enable more immersive mixed reality experiences.

Without a doubt, the extremely limited FOV was the HoloLens’ biggest weakness. And it looks like Microsoft’s listened to all of our complaints.

Alex Kipman, Microsoft’s technical fellow for cloud and AI, said, “[It’s] like going from two 720p [resolution screens] to 2K resolution in each eye.”

In addition to having a much wider field of view, the headset has also been designed to be “more than 3x” more comfortable to wear.

HoloLens 2 achieves this improved comfort with a new carbon fiber construction that’s lighter to wear for long periods of time. Furthermore, the headset’s band has been calibrated to better balance the weight of all the computer parts and distribute it across a user’s head.

Beyond hardware improvements, Microsoft says it’s also made a number of significant improvements to the “holograms” within the HoloLens platform.

A new “instinctual interaction” design language was created to make holograms more touchable. For example, Microsoft invented new virtual buttons and sliders that simulate tactile feeling with audio.

You still can’t feel virtual objects, but with audio, your brain’s tricked into thinking it’s actually pressed a button or flipped a switch.

In one demo, Microsoft showed holographic buttons being tapped and sliders moving on a rail as if they were physical objects in real space:

Below, you can see how a holographic piano can be played just like you would on a real piano. Microsoft says HoloLens 2 supports full 10-finger touch.

Another cool feature on HoloLens 2 is built-in eye-tracking, which can be used for things like scrolling down a holographic website as you look up and down the page.

HoloLens 2’s form factor is also customizable. Microsoft showed how the headset could be adapted to fit a variety of different fields.

Trimble is the first company to customize the new mixed reality headset to fit into hardhats for frontline field workers.

Other noteworthy announcements include Microsoft’s open app store for HoloLens development. Kipman said developers will of course be able to sell their holographic apps in the Windows Store, but they’ll also be able to create their own app stores.

“We believe in an open app store model,” Kipman said. “Developers will have the freedom to create their own stores as first class citizens in our experience.”

This “first-class citizenship” was echoed for open web browsers for HoloLens. Microsoft Edge will still be supported, but Firefox will also be coming to the holographic platform.

HoloLens 2 will be available as an “enterprise edition” for $3,500. Kipman downplayed the price by reminding everyone of the $5,000 cost of the original HoloLens. Developers will also be able to purchase HoloLens 2 for $125 per month.
