Guardian: Rumours of rift between Saudi King Salman and MBS

The relationship between Saudi King Salman and his son and heir, Mohammed bin Salman, has been increasingly strained as they disagree on a number of issues, including the war in Yemen, according to a Guardian report published on Tuesday.

Tensions are said to have come to a head during King Salman’s visit to Egypt last month when his advisors warned of a potential move against him by the crown prince, the report said, citing an anonymous source.

The king’s loyalists were reportedly so alarmed by the threat that his security detail during the trip was replaced by a team of 30 hand-picked loyalists.

Egyptian security guards were also dismissed, the source told the Guardian.

On King Salman’s return, Prince Mohammed (also known as MBS) was not among the dignitaries who received the monarch.

The source said the pair disagreed over King Salman’s hard line on protesters in Algeria and Sudan, as well as the treatment of Yemeni prisoners of war.

Consolidation of power

While MBS has consolidated power domestically by purging rivals within the royal family and repressing civil society activism, he has earned notoriety abroad for his aggressive foreign policy.

The murder of Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last October risked rupturing the decades-old alliance between Riyadh and Washington.

The journalist was murdered by a Saudi hit squad.

Saudi officials said the hit squad had gone rogue, but western intelligence agencies and politicians have insinuated it was acting under Prince Mohammed’s orders.

Senior members of Congress have not let the Washington Post columnist’s death fade into obscurity and are working on ways to punish Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi crown prince, however, has cultivated strong ties with the Trump administration, which has been reluctant to take action against him.

Making gourmet Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups is harder than you think

Bon Appetit is back, and this time, Claire Saffitz is going a little nutty over Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

Saffitz decides to take on the beloved candy, figuring out not only how to make it from scratch, but to make it gourmet.

The OG Reese’s, as she describes it, is almost “an assault of sugar.” But the pastry chef is deflated when she realizes that to achieve maximum gourmet, it’s suggested by multiple people that she temper the chocolate and make her own peanut butter from scratch.

For the base of the peanut butter filling, she draws inspiration from a Halvah recipe (a Middle-Eastern candy made from sesame paste) using peanuts to get that fluffy texture. She freezes the peanut butter circles, melts milk chocolate, and then attempts the ultimate challenge — achieving the signature smooth top.

Safftiz tries everything from canned air, to a heat gun, to a dust blower used for camera lenses, to spreading with a spoon, to using an airbrush machine. Eventually, she just taps the pan down on the table.

“Don’t look too close”, she remarks. “It’s a little bit like a Monet.”

Steve Kerr: Warriors’ Blowout Loss vs. Celtics ‘Embarrassing’

The Golden State Warriors are just 3-5 in their last eight games following Tuesday’s 128-95 blowout loss to the Boston Celtics at Oracle Arena, and head coach Steve Kerr was not happy.

“We did not go all out,” he said, per Nick Friedell of ESPN. “It was embarrassing.”

While the Warriors missed Klay Thompson’s shooting on the offensive end, it was the defensive lapses that proved costliest.

Five Celtics scored in double figures, highlighted by a head-turning performance from Gordon Hayward. He finished with 30 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals behind 12-of-16 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range.

Kyrie Irving (19 points, 11 assists and five rebounds) also added a double-double as the Warriors struggled to stay in front of him throughout the game.

Despite Kerr’s annoyance with the performance, there is no reason to panic for Golden State. It is still atop the Western Conference at 44-20, and the foursome of Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Thompson and Draymond Green understands what it takes to flip the switch in the playoffs after winning the last two championships.

It also has four-time All-Star DeMarcus Cousins in the middle this season, and he is capable of dominating opposing centers when playing at his best even though he is still adjusting to his new role with so much surrounding talent.

What’s more, Boston was particularly hungry for a win after dropping five of its previous six and played with a level of emotion the Warriors were unable to match.

Attention now turns to Friday’s critical showdown against the Denver Nuggets, who are 1.5 games behind the Warriors in the race for the Western Conference’s top seed. Expect Golden State to play with a higher level of urgency after Kerr’s comments.

North Korea restoring part of launch site it promised to destroy

North Korea has restored part of a missile launch site it had begun to dismantle after pledging to do so during the first summit with US President Donald Trump last year.

South Korean legislators briefed by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) said the work was taking place at the Tongchang-ri launch site, Yonhap news agency reported on Wednesday.

Satellite images seen by 38 North, a Washington DC-based North Korea project, showed structures on the launch pad had been rebuilt sometime between February 16 and March 2, Jenny Town, managing editor at the project and an analyst at the Stimson Center think-tank, told Reuters news agency.

The news comes days after a second summit on denuclearisation between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un broke down over differences on how far North Korea was willing to limit its nuclear programme and the degree of US willingness to ease sanctions.

‘Roofs and doors’

South Korea’s JoongAng Ilbo newspaper cited unidentified legislators as saying NIS Director Suh Hoon told them the structures being restored at the launch site included the roofs and doors of buildings.

Suh was quoted as saying the move is seen as either preparation to restart long-range missile test-launches in the event that the nuclear diplomacy completely collapses, or to add structures to the launch site to blow up more dramatically in a show of denuclearisation commitment when US inspectors visit, if negotiations with Washington go well.

The offices of South Korean legislators who took part in Tuesday’s briefing couldn’t immediately confirm the newspaper report.

A US official speaking anonymously said the NIS was considered reliable on such issues, but added that the work described did not seem particularly alarming, and certainly not on a scale of resuming missile tests, which have been suspended since 2017.

The breakdown of the summit in Hanoi last week has raised questions about the future of US-North Korea dialogue.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday he was hoping to send a delegation to North Korea in the coming weeks but he had had “no commitment yet”.

While North Korea’s official media said last week that Kim and Trump had decided at the summit to continue talks, its Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui told reporters Kim “might lose his willingness to pursue a deal” and questioned the need to continue.

Yongbyon reactor quiet

Yonhap also quoted legislators briefed by intelligence officials as saying the five-megawatt reactor at North Korea’s main nuclear site in Yongbyon, which produces weapons-grade plutonium, had not been operational since late last year, concurring with a report from the UN atomic watchdog.

Yonhap quoted the sources as saying there had been no sign of plutonium reprocessing from the reactor and that tunnels at North Korea’s main nuclear test site in Punggye-ri had remained shut down and unattended since their widely publicised destruction in May, which Pyongyang said was proof of its commitment to ending nuclear testing.

The fate of the Yongbyon nuclear complex and its possible dismantling was a central issue in the Hanoi summit.

Trump’s national security adviser said on Tuesday the United States will look at ramping up sanctions on North Korea if Pyongyang doesn’t scrap its nuclear programme.

“If they’re not willing to do it, then I think President Trump has been very clear … they’re not going to get relief from the crushing economic sanctions that have been imposed on them, and we’ll look at ramping those sanctions up in fact,” John Bolton told Fox Business Network in an interview.

Stephen Colbert steps up his Trump impression after CPAC speech

Stephen Colbert has already laid into Trump’s “epically weird” CPAC speech.

But there was one moment that the late show host had to talk about again: Trump’s admonishing of the people investigating him during his speech on Saturday.

And by talk, we mean totally mock the president with a new, weird impression that’s better if you just watch it (at 2:40). Colbert also tore into Trump’s press conference on Tuesday, where he answered questions about the investigations.

“It’s just so sad when his heart’s not in it, you know,” Colbert quipped. “He’s like an aging singer doing his 16th show of the week in Branson to a half-empty room.”

The Boston Celtics started their four-game road trip with a dominant 128-95 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday in a matchup between struggling teams at Oracle Arena.

Boston improved to just 2-5 in its last seven games, while the Warriors fell to 3-5 in their last eight and haven’t looked like the two-time defending champions of late.

Gordon Hayward exploded for 30 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals behind 12-of-16 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 shooting from deep in a vintage performance. Kyrie Irving (19 points, 11 assists and five boards) added a double-double, while Jaylen Brown (18 points) and Jayson Tatum (17 points) provided offensive support.

Stephen Curry (23 points) and Kevin Durant (18 points) spearheaded the effort for a Warriors team playing without Klay Thompson in the loss.

So much for the recent struggles.

The Celtics looked like a juggernaut instead of a team that has been laboring as they built a commanding 25-point halftime lead and added to it in Tuesday’s matchup in arguably the most difficult place to play in the league.

It was a reminder of just how talented they can be despite the drama that has surrounded them and may have left some Eastern Conference fans reminiscing about the LeBron James-era Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Cleveland squads of the past four campaigns were constant sources of consternation with shots at teammates on social media, front office mistakes, Irving asking for a trade, chemistry issues and the firing of head coaches David Blatt and Tyronn Lue. Just last season, the Cavaliers slogged their way to the No. 4 seed and almost lost in the first round to the Indiana Pacers.

Yet they always managed to flip the switch in the playoffs and rely on the overwhelming talent of James and a supporting cast that featured Irving (for three years) and Kevin Love and reached four straight NBA Finals. They even won the 2016 championship.

It is a blueprint this season’s Celtics team can look to for hope, as talent is not the question. After all, they reached Game 7 of last season’s Eastern Conference Finals even though Irving and Hayward were sidelined by injuries and brought the two playmakers back to a group with young talent in Tatum and Brown and veteran leadership in Al Horford.

Still, this season has been defined by drama, which has underscored the recent on-court struggles.

Brown called the environment around the team “toxic,” per Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe (h/t Dan Feldman of NBC Sports), while Marcus Smart said, “we’re just not together,” per NBC Sports Boston.

Marcus Morris took things a step further in February when he said, per A. Sherrod Blakely of NBC Sports Boston, “I watch all these other teams in the league, they’re jumping on the court, all the stuff that looks like they’re enjoying their teammates’ success. And they’re playing together, and they’re playing to win. When I look at us I see a bunch of individuals.”

Much of it comes back to Irving, who can become a free agent this offseason and may be looking toward an eventual exit.

Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer cited sources who said he has “become disengaged and detached from those around the team” with a “change in demeanor” that dates back to February questions about whether he would join the New York Knicks in 2019-20.

“Irving has grown increasingly frustrated with the intense media coverage of his future decision, and the state of the team,” O’Connor wrote.

There is unquestionably drama in Boston, but there was drama in Cleveland as well before the talent clicked in crunch time.

The Celtics’ blitzing of the Warriors highlighted how dangerous they can be when operating on all cylinders. Hayward drilled threes, Irving sliced through the defense and facilitated when Golden State collapsed, Tatum unleashed his silky-smooth attacks off the bounce, and Brown found openings and exploited them.

It was a warning to the rest of the Eastern Conference.

LeBron’s talent was enough to overcome the off-court headlines that threatened to undermine his most recent tenure in Cleveland when the games mattered most. The Celtics may very well do the same.

On Tuesday, Hayward looked like the All-Star from the Utah Jazz who averaged 21.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in 2016-17 instead of the version of himself that has been mired in a season-long slump.

He unleashed a smooth stroke from deep, created looks inside the lane with moves in traffic and jumped into passing lanes to create turnovers and easy looks on the other side.

It was easy to feel good for Hayward during the performance after he suffered a gruesome leg injury in the 2017-18 season opener and missed the rest of his first campaign with Boston. He has also struggled to adjust to a new role with so much talent around him and has hesitated at times on the offensive end.

Hayward’s 10.7 points per game this season represents his lowest since he was a rookie in 2010-11, and his three-point percentage has taken a significant drop from 2016-17 (39.8 percent to 32.8 percent).

Tuesday’s showing on a national stage felt like a breakthrough performance, and the question now is whether he can sustain it with the stretch run and playoffs looming. After all, he scored 35 points in a January win over the Minnesota Timberwolves but failed to score 20 in his following 18 games with single digits in nine of them.

If he can sustain this effort, Boston can make up the three games separating it from the third-seeded Pacers and 2.5 games separating it from the fourth-seeded Philadelphia 76ers.

That would create a situation where opposing defenses couldn’t afford to help off Hayward, Tatum, Brown or Terry Rozier with Irving serving as the creator with the ball in his hands. Leaving Hayward has been the easy choice in that pick-your-poison situation this season, but the version of the Butler product that showed up against the Warriors changes the equation.

What’s Next?

The Celtics are at the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday, while the Warriors host the Denver Nuggets on Friday.

Afghanistan: Suicide bomber strikes in Jalalabad

A suicide bomber in Afghanistan attacked on Wednesday in the country’s eastern city of Jalalabad, an official said, killing at least four people.

The attacker, who was on foot, detonated his explosives near the office of a construction company near the city’s airport, said Attaullah Khogyani, a spokesperson for the governor of Nangarhar province, of which Jalalabad is the capital.

The province’s police chief, General Ghulam Sanayee Stanikzai said several other attackers then stormed inside the company where a gunbattle is underway now. He says the casualty toll could rise further.

Stanikzai also says that US forces have arrived at the scene.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

‘Anchorman’ jazz flute scene gets perfectly remade by Lizzo

Anchorman is just one of those films that people can’t stop quoting.

One thing you don’t see re-enacted enough is the film’s numerous iconic scenes in full (fair enough if the rival news anchor gang war scene is just too perfect/dangerous to replicate).

Fortunately, rapper and very excellent flautist Lizzo has jumped into the fray with her shot-by-shot remake of the film’s jazz flute scene, set to her latest single “Juice.”

It comes after Will Ferrell, in character as Ron Burgundy, accepted her challenge to a flute-off back in January.

In the remake, you can spot Este Haim (from Haim, the band), as well as Lizzo really committing to stepping on those plates and glasses, just like Burgundy did.
