Kawhi Leonard Reportedly Doesn’t Want to Join Lakers, Play with LeBron James

David Zalubowski/Associated Press

If the Los Angeles Lakers pair a second superstar with LeBron James this summer, it likely won’t be Kawhi Leonard.

Appearing on the Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective Show (h/t RealGM.com), ESPN’s Michael C. Wright said he doesn’t believe Leonard is interested in signing with the Lakers as a free agent.

“I do not,” Wright said. “That’s just what I’ve been told. It’s what I’ve been told going back to last summer. I don’t see that as something that’s happening. I think he goes to the Clippers.”

This is hardly a new development for the Lakers. Leonard has reportedly had little interest in joining the team since speculation about a union between the two sides began last offseason.

In July, The Athletic and Stadium’s Shams Charania, then with Yahoo Sports, told Colin Cowherd on The Herd (h/t Travis Durkee of SportingNews.com) that “it’s been made abundantly clear there’s not an interest [from Leonard] to go join a superteam. I don’t think he’s jumping for joy that LeBron James is in L.A. with the Lakers.”

As the Lakers fade from playoff contention with a 30-35 record, the Los Angeles Clippers might seem more appealing for a superstar like Leonard. They’re 37-29 without a true go-to star after trading Tobias Harris to the Philadelphia 76ers in February. Plus, they only have $49.3 million in salary commitments next season, per Basketball Reference

Before Leonard can become a free agent this summer by declining a $21.3 million player option, he will try to help the Toronto Raptors win an NBA title. They own the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference with a 46-19 record.

Leonard leads the Raptors with 27.0 points per game and ranks second on the team with 7.4 rebounds.

Tesla called out for sneaky math on Model 3 pricing in Germany

Just like when Germany wasn’t too pleased with Tesla’s naming choice for its semi-autonomous feature (confusingly called Autopilot), the country’s automotive industry group is calling out the American electric vehicle company for misleading pricing online for the Model 3 sedan.

This week Reuters reported that the Wettbewerbszentrale nonprofit association that oversees fairness in the auto industry asked Tesla to include the full price of the car and remove the price based on gas savings and tax incentives and rebates.

Tesla appears to have already reversed course ahead of the March 20 deadline for the change. Accessing the Model 3 website through a VPN set to a location in Germany Friday afternoon, the full price before savings is listed, with no mention of estimated savings on the bottom bar or elsewhere.

The Model 3 pricing page in Germany.

Image: tesla / screengrab

In the U.S., the “savings” price is featured more prominently, with the cost “before savings” listed at the bottom, reflecting the true price. So the $35,000 Model 3 looks at first glance like a $24,450 car — but there’s an asterisk. Germany wasn’t having it. The country considers the labeling non-transparent, calling the listings “marketing exaggerations.”

Pricing in the U.S. can be confusing.

We reached out to Tesla about the price listings, but haven’t heard back yet.

Speaking of Autopilot, Tesla recently switched up the language on its website to make it a bit more vague and less likely to be accused of misleading or overpromising users on the system’s self-driving capabilities. Most noticeably, the Tesla Autopilot website’s main header now says “Future of Driving” instead of “Full Self-Driving Hardware on All Cars,” which was on the site as recently as Feb. 19, based on an Internet Archive search. Now, if only it could rename Autopilot …

Windhorst: Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving Like ‘Middle School Couple’ at All-Star

CHARLOTTE, NC - FEBRUARY 17: Kyrie Irving #11 and Kevin Durant #35 of Team LeBron are seen before the game against Team Giannis during the 2019 NBA All-Star Game on February 17, 2019 at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. The relationship between Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant and Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving during the 2019 NBA All-Star Weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina, was comparable to a “middle school couple,” according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.

Windhorst recently discussed the relationship on ESPN Radio (around the 28-minute mark):

“I was talking to some people who were with ‘Team Free Agent’, I mean ‘Team LeBron’ at All-Star, and they said that Kyrie and KD were like a middle school couple that weekend. Eating together. … Doing drills together at practice. ‘I’ll rebound for you. You rebound for me. I’ll post you up. You post me up.’ They were eating together. They went to Miami together after the weekend.”

Durant and Irving, both members of Team LeBron, were spotted hanging out together throughout the weekend:

Meanwhile, a video of the two chatting in a hallway went viral, as some speculated that the pair were talking about teaming up in free agency this summer:

Both Irving (who grew up in New Jersey) and Durant have been commonly linked to the New York Knicks.

When asked about the hallway conversation with Durant after the break, Irving vented his frustration about the “bulls–t” while saying that type of drama takes away from the joy of playing in the NBA:

“It’s a video of me and one of my best friends talking,” Irving told reporters last month. “And then it turns out to be a dissection of a free-agency meeting? Do you get that? Like, do you get that? And then I’m asked questions about that? That’s what disconnects me from all that s–t.”

Durant also called Irving his “best friend” in an interview with Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium in December.

Neither Irving nor Durant has revealed what will happen in free agency this summer. For now, the basketball world will continue to dissect their relationship to try to discover clues as the wait for July 1 continues.

Guatemalan women protest against decades of state violence

Guatemala City – Marcia Mendez carried a photograph of her older sister Luz Hayde around with her all day. For Mendez and many others in Guatemala, Friday marked much more than International Women’s Day.

“My sister was detained and disappeared on March 8, 1984,” Mendez told Al Jazeera.

Luz Hayde was 34 when soldiers abducted her from her Guatemala City home. She was tortured for more than 50 days, military documents later revealed. A mother of two, she was the secretary of international relations of the Guatemalan Labour Party, and dozens of its leaders were assassinated and disappeared.

The party had organised one of the country’s guerrilla forces that fought the army for decades. Over the course of the 1960-1996 armed conflict, an estimated 200,000 people were killed and 45,000 were forcibly disappeared.

A UN-backed truth commission concluded the army was responsible for 93 percent of atrocities, including acts of genocide. More than 80 percent of victims were indigenous Mayan, many of them killed in the more than 600 documented massacres.

“The violence during that era was very intense. You were targeted even just for having a family member involved in something,” Mendez said.

Mendez holds a photo of her sister, who was disappeared on March 8, 1984 by the Guatemalan military [Jeff Abbott/Al Jazeera]

The whole family was subject to surveillance by military intelligence, according to Mendez. In 1985, the year after her sister was disappeared, her younger brother Roberto was killed.

“Police beat him and then killed him execution-style with a bullet right here,” said Mendez, pointing to the centre of her forehead.

Annual march

Mendez was among the hundreds of women who took to the streets Friday, for the annual International Women’s Day march in Guatemala City.

Transgender women, domestic workers, indigenous midwives, and members of dozens of other organisations marched behind their groups’ banners.

A marching band plays as a group dances on stilts during the march to commemorate the International Women’s Day [Jeff Abbott/Al Jazeera]

Marching bands and stilt-walkers participated in the march up a downtown pedestrian thoroughfare to the central plaza, but the overall tone of the protest was one of indignation.

The night prior to the march, unknown perpetrators broke into the office of the Sector de Mujeres. Computers were among the items stolen from the alliance of more than 30 groups working together for an inclusive national women’s movement.

Second anniversary of youth shelter fire

Early in the morning, people gathered to commemorate the second anniversary of a fire in a state-run shelter facility. On international women’s day two years ago, 41 teenage girls burned to death and 15 others were injured, many of them with severe burns.

Several government employees, including police, are now on trial for their role in the fire. The girls were locked in a room and shelter officials waited nine minutes as the girls burned before they unlocked the door.

“It is one case, the case of the fire. But behind it, there is a whole series of cases that remains in impunity,” said Brenda Hernandez, a feminist activist involved in the movement for justice for the girls.

Some of the victims of the March 8, 2017 fire in the Hogar Seguro Virgen de la Asuncion shelter had run away from home, fleeing abuse and sexual assault by relatives. But many faced more of the same inside the shelter.

For years, girls reported being raped and forced into prostitution inside the state-run facility, but their protests were ignored. Two years ago, they were behind a locked door because they had helped facilitate a mass escape of boys from the shelter.

“They were demanding their rights, and the state burned them!” women chanted on Friday before setting off for the central plaza. Earlier in the morning, activists laid out 41 pairs of shoes in the plaza, each with a name of one of the teenage girls killed in the fire.

“The state is a state that has permitted the violation of women in every way,” Hernandez told Al Jazeera.

Rape as weapon of war

Guatemalans continue to clamour for justice for the Hogar Seguro fire victims. At the same time, indigenous women around the country have been fighting for justice for the use of rape as a weapon of war by military and paramilitary forces during the armed conflict.

Piedrina Lopez is one of them. She and 35 other Maya Achi women are pursuing a court case against six men for raping them inside a military base in the early 1980s.

“I was 12 years old when they raped me,” Lopez told Al Jazeera, adding that she then had to raise her four younger brothers because their parents were both killed.

The next hearing in the trial is set for late April, but a bill making its way through Congress is putting the case in jeopardy. The legal initiative would grant broad amnesty to perpetrators of crimes against humanity during the 36-year civil war.

The bill would order the release within 24 hours of more than 30 men, most of them from the military, convicted of rape, forced disappearance, and massacres. It would also release those in custody pending trial and shut down all current and future court cases.

The amnesty bill passed the second debate Wednesday and now has just one more debate and final vote before its passage in Congress. Victims, survivors, relatives and supporters continue to protest the measure, including during the women’s march on Friday.

“We want justice for what was done to us,” said Lopez.

Flickr announces all public Creative Commons works are now protected from deletion

Just days before Flickr mass deletes photos across its platform, the company has decided to hit its users with some good news.

In a blog post on Friday, Flickr announced that it will allow free accounts to host and upload more than the 1,000 photo limit if the photos are licensed freely under Creative Commons. Users can change their current photos to Creative Commons licensing, as well as upload future similarly licensed photos, to their free Flickr accounts.

After Flickr, one of the largest photo-sharing website, was acquired by Smugmug last year, the company announced sweeping changes to its account policies. Free accounts would be limited to no more than 1,000 image uploads. Photos exceeding that limit would be deleted from users’ free accounts. If a Flickr user wanted to keep those photos or upload more than 1000, they would need to upgrade to a paid “pro” level account.

The photo-sharing platform originally planned to begin deleting photos on February 5 but have since pushed it back to March 12.

Flickr had also announced at the time that publicly licensed photos uploaded prior to Nov 1, 2018 would be exempt from deletion.

“We wanted to make sure we didn’t disrupt the hundreds of millions of stories across the global internet that link to freely licensed Flickr images,” said Flickr’s announcement. “We know the cost of storing and serving these images is vastly outweighed by the value they represent to the world.”

Now, the company has extended its policy to host public Creative Commons licensed works regardless of when they were uploaded.

SEE ALSO: Elon Musk and The Rock bonded over these cursed Photoshopped memes

Along with this announcement, Flickr has disabled its bulk license change tools so users couldn’t just change the licensing on their photos en masse. Flickr says it wants its users to understand “the significant implications of the various free licenses we support” when choosing to update the license on their photos.

Flickr has also “in memoriam” accounts for users that pass away. When a member of the Flickr community dies, users can nominate that account to be locked and preserved. The account will be designated an “in memoriam” status and logins to the account will be blocked. The photo-sharing service will keep all the uploads on the account, even when their pro subscription lapses and their free account exceeds 1,000 photos.

After the original 1,000 limit policy change disappointed so many in the Flickr community, It’s good to see some positive news that centers its users. But, reminder: the photo-sharing service still plans to delete all non-Creative Commons licensed photos on free accounts exceeding the photo limit on March 12.

‘Grown-ish’ actress Yara Shahidi gets her own Barbie

‘Grown-ish’ star Yara Shahidi gets her own Barbie doll, which wears her signature “Vote” t-shirt.

When Barbie told 19-year-old Yara Shahidi that the company wanted to gift her a one-of-a-kind “shero” doll made in her likeness, the Grown-ish actress was stunned.

“It’s really surreal just because this was never within my realm of possibility. I never thought, ‘Oh yeah, one day I’ll have my own doll’ or anything like that,” says Shahidi, who went from starring on the hit series Black-ish to its spin-off Grown-ish

Shahidi is one of 20 role models from 18 countries being honored by Barbie as it marks both its 60th anniversary and International Women’s Day. The sheroes, as Barbie calls them, include German track cyclist Kristina Vogel, French director Lisa Azuelos, and Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka.

“It really amplifies and reaffirms this idea that we can excel in whatever field,” says Shahidi.

Barbie is touting this year’s group of sheroes as the “most diverse lineup” honored by the brand since the program launched in 2015. While customers can’t buy the role model dolls, they can choose from the Barbie Career 60th Anniversary doll collection, which includes an astronaut, firefighter, and pilot.

For every Barbie sold through March 11 in certain U.S. states, Mattel will donate $1 (up to $250,000) to the Barbie Dream Gap Project Fund, a new initiative that supports organizations “leveling the playing field for girls.”

Shahidi believes it’s important to see dolls that represent a wide range of female professionals because it shows kids what girls and women can achieve.

SEE ALSO: Barbie gets more inclusive with wheelchair and prosthetic limb

She says her parents intentionally introduced her to dolls, books, and TV characters that both reaffirmed her black female experience and demonstrated that anything is possible. Eventually, Shahidi learned other children didn’t get the opportunity to see role models that looked like them.

“When I realized that not everyone got the same privileges of seeing themselves reflected in the most tangible and the most metaphoric senses, it became really important to me to see what I could do in sharing the resources I’ve had, that have made such an impact,” says Shahidi.

Barbie and Shahidi worked together to design the doll, which included finding the right hair texture and skin tone.

“It was a really cool process of figuring out what makes this Barbie look like me,” says Shahidi. “What do I feel makes Yara Yara?”

One of the most recognizable features of Shahidi’s Barbie is its colorful “Vote” t-shirt. Proceeds from sales of the life-size, limited-edition tee go to Eighteen x 18, her voting initiative. Shahidi wears the shirt so often she jokes she’s become one with it.

On Friday morning, Shahidi helped Barbie turn the lights on the Empire State building in New York pink as a way to mark International Women’s Day. The brand also debuted new Facebook and Snapchat filters that let a user choose from several firsts, like being the first woman to run a four-minute mile, the first female lunar explorer, or the first female United Nations secretary general.

To girls who are dreaming about being the first in something, Shahidi says, “We’re particularly lucky to be born now because there’s generations of people who are waiting on us to accomplish all the amazing things we want to do.”

Business won’t be boomin’ in Buffalo, but it might be in the Bay Area.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown made an Instagram Live post Friday and said that he would reveal his new team shortly:

A voice off-camera noted that Brown was wearing the “black and gray” already. It was not confirmed that Brown would be heading to the Oakland Raiders in the video.

However, Brown and the Raiders have been heavily linked in recent days, as noted by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network and others.

Field Yates of ESPN.com also provided a transcript of Brown’s comments:

Antonio Brown on his Instagram live: “Hey I’m about to announce my new team in like a little bit alright… Something positive is about to be happening real soon, trust me. Stay by the phone… Big announcement coming soon. Big announcement coming soon! Mr. Big Checks.”

Shortly after the video, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported some big news regarding Brown and the Raiders:

Antonio Brown has told people he thinks he’ll wind up with the Raiders, but it’s not up to him. Time will tell if the Steelers are able to pull off a trade after talks with Bills blew up.

As did Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Three teams “still alive” in the running for Antonio Brown, per source. Deal could be completed soon, tho.

Provided Oakland is one of those three reported teams, the Silver and Black undoubtedly have an edge over competitors thanks to their draft capital. The team holds the No. 4, No. 24 and No. 27 overall picks in April’s draft in Nashville, Tennessee.

Parting with the No. 4 selection seems unlikely given the high price tag and the almost certain likelihood that a blue-chip defensive prospect like Alabama’s Quinnen Williams, Kentucky’s Josh Allen or Ohio State’s Nick Bosa will be waiting.

But if the Raiders are willing to give up a late first-rounder, then this would seemingly work, especially considering that Oakland has over $64 million in cap space to use on Brown and others, per Over the Cap. Also, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said that the Steelers are looking for a first-round selection in return for the star wideout:

Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that it’s “believed [Brown would] welcome joining [the] franchise”:

Michael Gehlken @GehlkenNFL

If Raiders surface as strong suitor for Antonio Brown — desire for new contract been an impediment — it’s believed he’d welcome joining franchise. One person close to Brown said 2020 move to Las Vegas a factor in his thinking. No state income taxes in Nevada.

Regardless of where Brown winds up, a move out of Pittsburgh in the near future is all but certain given the reports that have come out of late.
