UK home secretary criticised over death of Shamima Begum’s baby

The United Kingdom‘s Home Secretary Sajid Javid has faced criticism following the death of the baby son of a British teenager stripped of her citizenship for joining the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) in Syria.

Shamima Begum’s three-week old son Jarrah died in a camp in Syria on Thursday, according to spokesperson for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mustafa Bali. A medical certificate pointed towards pneumonia as the cause of death, reported the BBC.

Following the incident, British politicians and members of the public criticised the Home Office for calling Begum a “security risk” and revoking her citizenship, with some even blaming Javid for the baby’s death.

Dal Babu, a former Metropolitan Police chief superintendent and friend of Begum’s family, told BBC Newsnight on Friday: “We’ve failed, as a country, to safeguard the child.”

“This was an entirely avoidable death of a British citizen,” said Babu.

“There was no attempt to help by the Home Office. I think it’s shocking how the home secretary has treated this situation.”

Blaming Javid for the baby’s death, British journalist Ash Sarkar tweeted: “Whatever Shamima Begum may have done, her child was innocent and a British citizen.”

Whatever Shamima Begum may have done, her child was innocent and a British citizen.

Sajid Javid let a baby die because looking like a strongman mattered more than the rule of law and a child’s life.

— Ash Sarkar (@AyoCaesar) March 8, 2019

UK’s shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott also criticised the home secretary’s move.

“It is against international law to make someone stateless, and now an innocent child has died as a result of a British woman being stripped of her citizenship. This is callous and inhumane,” tweeted Abbott.

Begum was discovered last month in a refugee camp in Syria by a reporter with the UK-based newspaper, The Times, four years after she was last seen, aged 15, fleeing from her East London home.

She, along with two of her female friends, left the UK to join the ISIL armed group in 2015.

Now 19, Begum had told journalists she wanted to raise Jarrah in the UK, alleging that she had lost two other children in Syria to malnutrition and disease.

The UK government, however, moved to revoke Begum’s citizenship, effectively blocking her return by claiming she was a dual-national with access to Bangladeshi citizenship.

After Begum was stripped of her citizenship, her family tried to challenge the decision and asked for help in bringing her baby back to the UK.

While Home Secretary Javid confirmed Begum’s son was a British citizen, he said it would be “incredibly difficult” to facilitate the return of a child from Syria.

Begum’s family denied she is a dual citizen and said it plans to challenge the UK’s decision. A Bangladeshi foreign affairs official also told Al Jazeera that Begum is not a Bangladeshi .

International law forbids countries from making people stateless by revoking their only citizenship.

The case of Begum has highlighted a dilemma facing many European countries, divided over whether to allow ISIL members or sympathisers home to face prosecution or bar them as the armed group’s so-called “caliphate” collapses.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah appeals for donations to combat sanctions

Lebanon's Hezbollah leader Nasrallah says he expects US sanctions 'to get tighter' [File: Aziz Taher/Reuters]
Lebanon’s Hezbollah leader Nasrallah says he expects US sanctions ‘to get tighter’ [File: Aziz Taher/Reuters]

Lebanon‘s Hezbollah movement has called for donations from its popular base because it says it is coming under financial pressure as a result of Western sanctions.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah’s appeal on Friday came after Britain announced on February 25 that it would seek to make membership of the Shia movement or inviting support for it a crime.

It also follows the United States ramping up sanctions against the group, with its latest raft of measures in November targeting Nasrallah’s son Jawad, among other individuals.

“The sanctions and terror lists are a form of warfare against the resistance and we must deal with them as such,” Nasrallah said in a televised speech.

“I announce today that we are in need of the support of our popular base,” Nasrallah added.

“It is the responsibility of the Lebanese resistance, its popular base, its milieu,” to confront these measures.

Hezbollah was established in 1982 during Lebanon’s civil war and is now a major political party in the country, holding three cabinet posts.

The movement has been designated a terrorist organisation by the US since 1997 and the group’s armed wing fights alongside the government of Syria‘s President Bashar al-Assad in the country’s civil war.

Commenting on Britain’s ban, he said: “More states will follow suit and put Hezbollah on terror lists and describe it as a terrorist group.”

Addressing his supporters, he stressed that the “financial difficulties that we may face are a result of this (financial) war” and not because of any “administrative defect”.

“They wont be able to impoverish or starve us,” he said. “Those who have supported us will continue to support us… be it states or our support base”.

Washington has targeted the party with tough sanctions, and the European Union blacklisted the group’s military arm in 2013.

Nasrallah said he expects US sanctions “to get tighter on us and our supporters”.

“We may see new names, and new people, and new organisations added to the sanctions lists.”

Nigeria elections: Local polls open to elect governors

Nigeria elections: Local polls open to elect governors
The poll comes two weeks after President Buhari secured a second term [Gokhan Kavak/Anadolu]

Nigerians are voting on Saturday to elect governors and state assembly members, two weeks after Muhammadu Buhari secured a second term in a delayed presidential vote.

Elections for governors are being held in 29 of Nigeria’s 36 states, for all state assemblies, plus the administrative councils in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja.

Polling stations opened at 07:00 GMT and close at 13:00 GMT, with results expected from early next week.

Governors are among the most influential politicians in Nigeria, which is Africa’s biggest oil producer and has the continent’s largest economy. Many of them control budgets larger than those of small nations.

With so much at stake, many previous governorship elections have been marred by violence including shootings and armed gangs snatching ballot boxes.

Buhari, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), beat Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in last month’s presidential election with 15.2 million votes to 11.3 million, though on a turnout of just 35.6 percent.

The president is expected to consolidate his February 23 victory, in which he won 19 states to secure a second and final four-year term of office.

His APC party currently controls 22 states while the main opposition PDP has 13, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has one.

State-level elections are often predicted to broadly mirror presidential polling and this year comes amid concerns about the role of security forces during the vote.

During the presidential and parliamentary polling, there were reports of violence, vote-buying, voter intimidation and ballot box vandalism in some states.

At least 53 people were killed, according to the Situation Room umbrella group of more than 70 civil society monitoring groups, which said safety fears contributed to a low turnout.

Sudan’s Bashir orders release of detained women protesters

Hundreds of protesters have been detained since the rallies erupted on December 19 [File: Mohamed Nureldin Abdallah/Reuters]

Sudan‘s President Omar al-Bashir has ordered the release of all women protesters detained during nationwide demonstrations that have rocked his rule since December.

Bashir made the announcement on Friday during a meeting with a group of people from eastern Sudan at his residence in Khartoum.

“I order Salah Ghosh to release all women detainees,” Bashir said at the meeting, referring to the chief of the powerful National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) that has led a sweeping crackdown on protesters.

The media office at the presidency confirmed the move, which coincided with International Women’s Day.

Officials have not said how many women have been detained during the protests, but opposition activists say about 150 are in detention.

Hundreds of protesters, opposition leaders, activists and journalists have been detained since the rallies erupted on December 19 following a government decision to triple the price of bread.

The protests quickly mushroomed into nationwide demonstrations against Bashir’s rule, with crowds calling on the veteran leader to step down.

Bashir himself has acknowledged that the protests were led by youths, the majority of them women.

Officials say 31 people have died in protest related violence so far, while the Human Rights Watch has put the death toll at at least 51.

Bashir has imposed a slew of tough measures, including a year-long state of emergency across the country, to quell the protests after the initial crackdown failed to suppress the movement.

Earlier on Friday, protesters staged a demonstration in eastern Khartoum’s district of Burri but they were confronted by security forces with tear gas, witnesses said.

Security forces also fired tear gas at protesters who rallied outside a mosque in the twin city of Omdurman after the weekly Muslim prayers, witnesses said.

Will Sudan’s protesters agree to negotiate with Omar al-Bashir?

Clint Capela added 18 points, nine rebounds and four steals for the 40-25 Rockets, who are now tied for third in the Western Conference with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Eric Gordon contributed 17 points.

Tobias Harris led the 41-25 76ers with 22 points, and Ben Simmons earned a near triple-double with 15 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.

Philadelphia was without starting center Joel Embiid, who hasn’t played since the All-Star break because of left knee soreness.

Rockets Are NBA‘s Most Dangerous Team Entering Homestretch

No NBA team is hotter than the Rockets, who have the NBA’s longest active winning streak. Given their stiff competition during that seven-game stretch, it’s hard to argue they aren’t the league’s most dangerous team.

The Rockets easily dispatched the 76ers after having little issue with the Toronto Raptors (47-19) and Boston Celtics (40-26) in their previous two games. In that trio of contests, they averaged a 13-point margin of victory against three of the top five Eastern Conference teams.

Bleacher Report @BleacherReport

Ready for Playoff Harden?

During this 7-game win streak, Rockets have beaten the Celtics, Raptors and Sixers by double-digits https://t.co/CesTl28mBD

And Houston started the aforementioned run with a 118-112 win over the defending champion Golden State Warriors—that was on the road and without Harden.

Who would look forward to a matchup with Houston right now?

The team numbers tell a similar story. The Rockets entered Friday second in offensive efficiency (114.5 points scored per 100 possessions), per NBA.com, despite the extended absences of three of their four best players.

FiveThirtyEight lists the Rockets as the second-strongest team via regular-season Elo rating, which is defined as a “measure of team strength based on head-to-head results, margin of victory and quality of opponent.” Their Elo Rating improved by the fifth-most points since March 1, and that number should only improve after the 76ers win.

And their defense, which has struggled for much of the year, has improved. Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle wrote about that prior to the 76ers game:

“The Rockets have shown flashes, ranking among the best defensive teams in the NBA in the second half of their first four games of the winning streak and then excelling in the first half and down the stretch in Boston and Toronto. The 25th-rated defense in the NBA heading into the break, they have been 15th in the winning streak, which seems to equally indicate the progress made and also needed given their renewed championship aspirations.

That was before the Rockets allowed their third-lowest point total this season Friday night.

The Rockets also pass the eye test. Specifically, Capela has been a serious problem since returning from thumb surgery. Not many centers can do what Capela did here, going end to end with a steal plus an and-1:

Houston Rockets @HoustonRockets

We 👀 you big fella’ !

Defense ✔
Basket + Foul ✔ https://t.co/M33omAl4US

Nor can they outrun defenders coast to coast for a dunk:

Houston Rockets @HoustonRockets

#RunAsOne 🚀 https://t.co/xW7rkqEtL2

But the biggest reason to be scared of the Rockets (aside from MVP candidate James Harden) is that Capela, Gordon and Chris Paul are all healthy after missing a combined 51 games. They are second through fourth in scoring on the team, respectively, and they’re all back.

Houston’s slate until March 24 is also manageable, so this run could continue. Seven of the Rockets’ next nine opponents have losing records, and Houston will host the two that don’t (Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs). A double-digit winning streak on the road to the playoffs is a possibility.

Joel Embiid Can’t Come Back Soon Enough

If Embiid had played Friday, would this moment have occurred?

Harden drove through the lane with no resistance in a moment that symbolized the night. It was something Kyle Neubeck of the PhillyVoice perhaps foreshadowed when he posted this pregame poll:

Kyle Neubeck @KyleNeubeck

Without Joel Embiid to anchor the back end, James Harden will score _____ points tonight

The 76ers looked deflated and lethargic in a lifeless road performance, just two days after being on the wrong end of a 108-107 upset to the 19-win Chicago Bulls. And it’s clear that Embiid needs to come back as soon as possible.

The bottom fell out against Houston. Of note, Philadelphia big men Amir Johnson and Jonah Bolden combined for three points on 1-of-8 shooting in 36 minutes, and the team went 3-of-25 from three-point range.

Granted, every team has off nights, but the 76ers were facing a Rockets team that entered Friday ranked 25th in defensive efficiency (111.9 points allowed per 100 possessions). They posted their lowest point total since opening night against the Boston Celtics in October.

Yes, the Rockets were 7.5-point favorites, per Vegas Insider, but the 76ers also had an 111.5-point implied team total and fell short of that by 20.5. By any measure, this game was a disaster.

Replacing Embiid’s production is an impossible task. The big man averaged 27.3 points on 48.2 percent shooting, 13.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.9 blocks per game. He is No. 1 on the team in player efficiency rating and ninth in the league in that stat, per Basketball Reference.

Philadelphia’s road stays treacherous through March. Sure, a couple of easier matchups dot the ledger, like a home date with the 16-50 Cleveland Cavaliers. But a home matchup with the Indiana Pacers, who are third in the Eastern Conference, looms on Sunday. Matchups at the league-best Milwaukee Bucks and against the Boston Celtics, who have beaten Philadelphia three times, are also up ahead.

The good news is that Embiid could come back as early as Sunday, per Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic:

Stadium @Stadium

Our NBA Insider @ShamsCharania says there is some optimism Joel Embiid can return as soon as Sunday against Indiana. Here’s more. https://t.co/GlUQyaG629

But if he’s not there, then the Pacers have the advantage as the two teams fight alongside the C’s for the No. 3 seed in the East.

What’s Next?

Both teams play Sunday. The 76ers return home to face the Indiana Pacers at the Wells Fargo Center, and the Rockets stay in-state for a road matchup against the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center.
