‘Resilience’: Afghan wrestling club reopens after suicide attack

Kabul, Afghanistan – The Maiwand Wrestling club was attacked by suicide bombers from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) group last September.

At least 20 people were killed and 70 wounded in the assault at the club in Dash-e-Barchi, a neighbourhood in Kabul’s west, home to a sizeable Hazara community.

Coach Ghulam Abbas lost his left arm in what he said was an attack on the ethnic Hazara minority – a group comprising mostly Shia Muslims and accounting for up to 15 percent of Afghanistan’s estimated 30 million population.

The Hazara have long suffered oppression and persecution in Afghanistan. In the 1990s, thousands were killed by al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters. They are now often targeted by groups swearing allegiance to ISIL.

The Taliban, during their rule from 1996 to 2001, declared the Hazaras non-Muslims“.

More recently, peace talks have gathered pace following a series of high-level meetings between US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad and Taliban representatives over the past three months in Qatar.

The Hazaras doubt the negotiations will stop the killings.

In an act of resistance, Abbas has now returned to the wrestling club where he taught for 30 years.

An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 crashed en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi with 149 passengers and eight crew believed to be on board, Ethiopian Airlines said.

Ethiopia’s prime minister offered condolences to victims’ families.

“We hereby confirm that our scheduled flight ET 302 from Addis Ababa to Nairobi was involved in accident today,” the airline said in a statement on Sunday.

“It is believed that there were 149 passengers and eight crew on board the flight but we are currently confirming the details of the passenger manifest for the flight.”

The airline said “search and rescue operations are in progress and we have no confirmed information about survivors or any possible casualties.”

The plane took off at 8:38am (06:38 GMT) from Bole International Airport and “lost contact” six minutes later near Bishoftu, a town some 60km southeast of Addis Ababa by road.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office tweeted it “would like to express its deepest condolences to the families of those that have lost their loved ones on Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 on regular scheduled flight to Nairobi, Kenya this morning.”

The Office of the PM, on behalf of the Government and people of Ethiopia, would like to express it’s deepest condolences to the families of those that have lost their loved ones on Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 on regular scheduled flight to Nairobi, Kenya this morning.

— Office of the Prime Minister – Ethiopia (@PMEthiopia) March 10, 2019

Ethiopian Airlines said it would send staff to the accident scene to “do everything possible to assist the emergency services.”

It would also set up a passenger information centre and a dedicated telephone number for family and friends of people who may have been on the flight.

The Boeing 737-800MAX is the same type of plane as the Indonesian Lion Air jet that crashed last October, 13 minutes after takeoff from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board.

The last major accident involving an Ethiopian Airlines passenger plane was a Boeing 737-800 that exploded after taking off from Lebanon in 2010, killing 83 passengers and seven crew.

Venezuela’s Maduro: Blackout due to cyber-attack, infiltrators

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro says the country’s complete electrical failure has been caused by “an international cyber-attack” but that his administration has “defeated their coup”.

Power and communication outages continue to hit Venezuela on Sunday, intensifying the hardship of a country paralysed by economic and political crises.

The blackout heightened tensions between the opposition and government loyalists, who accuse each other of being responsible for the collapse of the power grid.

“I will tell this for the first time,” Maduro told the hushed crowd in Caracas on Saturday. “We are in the process of investigation and correcting it all because there are many infiltrators attacking the electrical company from within.”

Maduro stated that Venezuela had been hit yet again by another “cyber-attack” at noon on Saturday.

‘Permanent state of alert’

Speaking to Al Jazeera from the Perez Carreno flagship hospital in Caracas, Lorelei Gorrin, an emergency surgeon, said she had just completed one of the toughest shifts of her life.

“I didn’t stop receiving patients. We could only help those who had life-threatening issues,” said Gorrin.

“The generator worked, but I was worried it would suddenly stop working. We don’t know when we’re going to lose power again, or how we’re going to deal with that. If we had to resort to manual respiratory aid devices, we would not have enough to help all those that need them.

“We’re in a permanent state of alert, which is mentally and emotionally draining,” she said.

Across Venezuela, millions of people are affected by the continued blackout.

Valeria Castillo, a 43-year-old actress, told Al Jazeera she briefly “escaped” her home where she takes care of her ailing parents to attend an opposition rally in the capital.

“The entire floor of the house is full of candle wax. My father is very old and sometimes soils himself and washing him has been a real pain with no power and no water as the pump does not work,” said Castillo.

Support for Maduro

Still, many Venezuelans continue to support Maduro in his ongoing fight against what he calls US imperialism.

On Saturday, thousands of demonstrators at a pro-Maduro rally danced and waved flags on what organisers labelled a “day of anti-imperialism”, in a show of defiance towards the US, which has imposed oil sanctions on Venezuela in an attempt to overthrow the president.

Many showed up wearing red caps and shirts in support of the self-proclaimed “socialist revolution” of leader Hugo Chavez, who died six years ago and was succeeded by his protege, Maduro.

Lidia Calderon, 37, joined the rally saying she relies on Maduro to fix the situation.

“He does what he can to maintain the peace. And it is very clear that the electricity [situation] is a war against the people,” said Calderon.

Maduro’s government has not moved directly against opposition leader Juan Guaido since he returned to Venezuela from a Latin American tour on Monday.

But on Saturday, Maduro stepped up verbal attacks on Guaido, calling him “a clown and puppet” in a speech to his supporters outside Miraflores, the presidential palace.

He scoffed at Guaido’s claim in late January to be interim president of Venezuela, a declaration supported by the US and about 50 other countries.

“We have defeated their coup,” said Maduro. “They tried illegitimately to turn into a president a person in a public square and now, today, it is obvious to the world he is not a president, not anything. A clown and a puppet is what that man [Guaido] is. Delinquent citizen.”

Maduro also accused Guaido and his US allies of sabotaging Venezuela’s Guri Dam, one of the world’s largest hydroelectric stations and the cornerstone of Venezuela’s electrical grid.

He said authorities had restored 70 percent of power in Venezuela since a nationwide outage hit late Thursday, but progress was lost on Saturday when “infiltrators” allegedly struck again.

The Venezuelan opposition and US officials say Maduro’s attempts to pin blame on his political adversaries is absurd, and that government corruption and mismanagement over many years caused the blackout and wider deterioration of the economy.

In another blow to Venezuela’s infrastructure, an explosion occurred at a power station in the country’s Bolivar state on Saturday, according to local media.

Netblocks, a non-government group based in Europe that monitors internet censorship, said on Saturday that the second outage had knocked out almost all of Venezuela’s telecommunications infrastructure.

President worried about drug trade as Guinea-Bissau votes

Bissau, Guinea-Bissau – In an interview with Al Jazeera ahead of key legislative elections, the president of Guinea Bissau appealed to the international community to help stop drug traffickers using his country’s shores to land cocaine.

President Jose Mario Vaz’s comments came after a meeting with UN Security Council ambassadors who were visiting ahead of the twice-delayed legislative elections, now scheduled for Sunday, March 10.

“I would like to ask for help to fight these people because they are strong,” said Vaz, adding he was “afraid”.

Once labelled “Africa’s first narco-state”, Guinea-Bissau lacks the resources to tackle traffickers, according to Vaz.

“We don’t have aeroplanes, we don’t have boats, we lack the radars that would give us control over our … economic zone,” he said.

His plea in the interview, which took place mid-February, came as fighting among political rivals intensified in the run-up to the bitterly-contested poll.

Since independence in 1974, the country of nearly two million has been blighted by successive coups and attempted coups, with Latin American drug lords exploiting the instability to use its complex coastline as a staging post for their illicit cargo.

It’s important to respect and give strength to the head of the army. When other people come to me, I send them back. Today we can say the armed forces of Guinea Bissau are calm.

    Jose Mario Vaz, Guinea-Bissau president

Weak institutions and corrupt officials made the country easy prey.

Vaz’s election in 2014 was supposed to herald a new dawn. But while he may become the country’s first president to complete a full mandate this June, his time in office has been marred by internecine fighting within the ruling African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), to which he belongs.

The feud pitted Vaz against party president Domingos Simoes Pereira, whom he sacked as prime minister on corruption charges in 2015. Since then, there have been six prime ministers.

The situation is complicated further by Vaz’s fraught relationship with former party allies, who were kicked out of the PAIGC in 2016.

Last year, the so-called “Grupo dos quinze” (group of fifteen) were hit with sanctions, including travel bans and asset freezes, by regional bloc ECOWAS for blocking attempts to find a consensus prime minister.

Exasperated by Vaz’s inability to win back influence in the PAIGC, they have formed a new political party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MADEM G15).

Amadu Djamanca, executive secretary of think-tank the Observatory of Democracy and Governance, believes the squabbling ultimately comes down to a battle for control of the PAIGC, the country’s dominant party, which enjoys quasi-mythical status as the movement that overthrew the Portuguese in one of Africa’s most fiercely fought independence wars.

“This fight is not about an election. It is a fight between these men,” he said.

Egos aside, there are also other, more material concerns.

“It’s an existential fight,” said one diplomatic source, who requested anonymity. “It’s people with kids, houses and expensive lovers in Europe who don’t know how to do anything else but thieve from the state, that are fighting for their survival.”

The political battle of wills has paralysed the impoverished country, whose main official export is cashew nuts, for over three years.

But, as the source noted, politicians have at least refrained from violence.

Vaz himself holds up the relative peace as his main legacy.

“Nobody has been beaten, nobody has been killed, there have been no coups, there is peace, there is stability, there are no arbitrary imprisonments, freedom is total,” he said. “It has been very difficult to achieve this peace and stability. And I don’t play with this.”

It is a moot point; the past three years have seen successive waves of teacher strikes over pay and conditions, with teacher’s union SINDEPROF claiming that over CFA500 million is now owed to staff. Last month, Bissau descended into chaos after a student protest in support of teachers ended in confrontations with security forces.

Since then, the country has swirled with rumours of agents provocateurs infiltrating the protests.

    Can the election end deadlock?

Diplomats in the capital who spoke to Al Jazeera suspected that top officials may have engineered conflict in a bid to delay elections and preserve the economic benefits of being in power.

Questioned on the allegations, which have placed him under scrutiny, Vaz agreed that the protests had been instrumentalised.

“There are some citizens who are not ready to go to the elections, so the protests might help them,” he said. “Their goal was to ruin the image of the country.”

For the first time since independence, the military has remained in barracks throughout the turmoil.

Vaz, who has a strong relationship with the current army chief, said military reform had been his highest priority.

“There were problems of tribalism and religion in the armed forces. The main way to fight this problem is to respect the chain of command. It’s important to respect and give strength to the head of the army. When other people come to me, I send them back,” he said. “Today we can say the armed forces of Guinea Bissau are calm.”

Djamanca agreed that the president deserved credit for reining the military in. But, with the army out of the picture, people were becoming increasingly aware that the country’s main problem was its politicians, he said.

“This political class we have right now doesn’t know what it means to rule in the public [interest],” he said. “They just care about themselves and their families. They don’t have money to pay teachers, but they have money to buy expensive cars.”

While there are hopes Sunday’s legislative election could settle current disputes once and for all, it could just as well end in another stalemate. Observers think it unlikely that the poll will hand a majority to a single party, meaning that rivalries could deepen.

“The political issues will get more intensive because now the parties know that they can arrange friendships, bring down a government and raise another one,” said Djamanca.

In truth, all eyes are on the presidential election, which is slated for November or December. For now, Vaz says he is focused on being the first president to reach the hitherto-elusive finishing line.

Nobody can say for sure to what extent drug lords still wield influence here.

But everyone knows how much havoc they can wreak. Ten years ago, almost to the day, sitting president João Bernardo “Nino” Vieira and army commander General Batista Tagme Na Waie were assassinated in what was thought to be a tit-for-tat double murder, the former attacked with a machete hours after the latter was bombed at military HQ.

The pair were thought to be competing for stakes in the drugs trade.

“It is prohibited to beat [prisoners],” said Vaz. “But If I catch these people, I will order them beaten.”

Report: Antonio Brown Traded to Raiders for Draft Picks, Receives New Contract

    Keith Srakocic/Associated Press

The long, winding and sometimes confusing Antonio Brown trade saga ended early Sunday morning, as the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly agreed to deal the Pro Bowl wide receiver to the Oakland Raiders, according to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio

Florio added Brown will receive a new contract as part of the agreement that will pay out $50.125 million over the next three seasons, and that his guaranteed cash has gone from $0 to $30.125 million. ESPN’s Adam Schefter added the deal could increase to $54.125 million with incentives.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the Raiders will send 2019 third- and fifth-round picks to the Steelers.

Pittsburgh found a new home for Brown after trade talks between the Steelers and Buffalo Bills reportedly broke down late Thursday night into early Friday morning.

Rapoport reported Thursday night that the Bills were “closing in” on a deal for Brown, but a source told Schefter that the trade was “unlikely.” Bills general manager Brandon Beane then made it official that the Bills were out of the running:

    Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter

Bills’ GM Brandon Beane: “We inquired about Antonio Brown on Tuesday, and kept talks open with the Steelers. We had positive discussions, but ultimately it didn’t make sense for either side. As great a player as Antonio Brown is, we have moved on and our focus is on free agency.”

Several theories surfaced regarding why the trade didn’t happen, but Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported Brown was “unwilling” to go to Buffalo. La Canfora then called Brown’s market “bleak.”

Even so, the Steelers eventually found a landing spot for arguably the best wide receiver of the past decade.

There is no denying that Brown is an elite wideout. He is a seven-time Pro Bowler and four-time first-team All-Pro who has registered at least 100 catches for 1,200 yards and eight touchdowns in each of the past six seasons.

Although he finished second on the Steelers in receptions and receiving yardage to JuJu Smith-Schuster last season, he still had a strong year with 104 grabs for 1,297 yards and an NFL-best 15 touchdown receptions.

Things went sour for Brown and the Steelers leading up to Week 17 of the 2018 season. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette‘s Gerry Dulac and Ed Bouchette, Brown and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger reportedly got into an argument at practice, which resulted in Brown’s skipping practice for the rest of the week and being ruled inactive for Pittsburgh’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Brown was vocal about his desire to get traded once the offseason began, and it wasn’t long before it became clear the Steelers were willing to grant his request.

Last month, Brown and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, met with Steelers owner Art Rooney II, general manager Kevin Colbert and executive Omar Khan. Schefter reported that a source told him “everyone agreed the trade will be for the best.”

Brown seemed to confirm the report on Twitter:

    Antonio Brown @AB84

Had a great meeting with Mr.Rooney today we discussed a lot of things and we cleared the air on several issues! We both agreed that it is time to move on but I’ll always have appreciation and gratitude towards the Rooney family and @steelers organization! #CallGod #Boomin https://t.co/DEgURchvhW

The Steelers found themselves in a difficult situation, since all of Brown’s potential suitors knew Pittsburgh had little choice other than to trade him. Brown’s reported refusal to report to the Bills threw another wrench into the situation, since it essentially allowed the receiver to dictate where he would go.

In the end, the Steelers reached a deal, and the Raiders have a potential future Hall of Famer as part of their receiving corps.

For Derek Carr, who saw the Raiders trade Amari Cooper to the Dallas Cowboys last season, Sunday’s news will be met with open arms. Brown is the best receiver Carr will have ever played with and will give Oakland a focal point for the passing game.

The big question will be if Brown can replicate his gaudy numbers in a new offense system and away from Roethlisberger. But it’s hard to imagine Oakland pulled the trigger on this trade to make Brown a glorified perimeter blocker. He should see plenty of targets in Oakland.

Los Angeles played without three of its five leading scorers in Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma and Lonzo Ball. Ball and Ingram will miss the rest of the season with deep venous thrombosis and an ankle sprain/bone bruise, respectively. Kuzma is recovering from an ankle injury.

Perfect Storm Brewing for Celtics to Nab No. 3 Seed

The Celtics have endured a puzzling season that’s featured confusing losses to bad teams and heated postgame comments. They recently lost four straight and couldn’t score 100 in three of them, a tough task considering that every NBA team averages more than 101 points per game.

Despite these facts, the C’s are somehow alive for the Eastern Conference’s No. 3 seed.

The remaining schedule sets up well. Take a look at their upcoming slate and guess the amount of games where the C’s will be a underdogs. That will likely be the case for road games versus the Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers and Indiana Pacers, but the spreads won’t be massive. Otherwise, the most competitive contests look like pick ’ems at worst.

And that’s crucial for the Celtics, who are just 1.5 games behind the Pacers for third place in the East. The 76ers sit in the middle, a half-game ahead of Boston.

The Celtics are also benefiting from their opponents’ poor play. Simply put, no one is seizing the No. 3 seed.

The Pacers have been exceptional, considering they are playing without leading scorer, All-Star Victor Oladipo, who suffered a season-ending quad injury in January. However, they have gone just 10-10 in the 20 full games since Oladipo’s 2018-19 campaign ended.

The 76ers are trying to hang on without All-Star center Joel Embiid, who has missed his past eight games with left knee soreness. But Philadelphia has only gone 4-4, a stretch that has been capped by a loss to the 19-48 Chicago Bulls and a lifeless 16-point defeat to the Houston Rockets.

Embiid might return as early as Sunday against Indiana, per Kyle Neubeck of Philly Voice, but the Celtics are going to emerge as winners regardless of who takes that game.

Tim Bontemps of ESPN explained why:

The Celtics also own the head-to-head tiebreaker against Philadelphia thanks to three regular-season wins. That could come into play given their close proximity in the standings, and FiveThirtyEight predicts Boston and Philly will finish tied for third in the East standings at 52-30.

Boston can hit that mark, as its fortunes seemed to have turned around. A cross-county plane ride to begin their Western Conference road trip, which began with a 128-95 win over the defending champion Golden State Warriors, is being credited as a catalyst for the turnaround.

Celtics center Al Horford told reporters:

“Kyrie was instrumental because he was the one that initiated everything as far as being like, ‘Hey, let’s have conversations, let’s play cards, let’s do this, let’s do that on this plane ride. And we were all engaged at that point.

“He’s the one who got that ball rolling…We spent a good amount of time together, we talked, we laughed, stuff like that. It just happened to be extended. As opposed to an hour or two hours, almost seven hours. You’d think we’d get sick of each other but, actually, it made the plane ride go quicker. We were just hanging out and talking.”

Irving spoke more about the plane ride in a recent conversation with reporters:

Perhaps that will be the turning point of the Celtics’ season. Granted, it’s possible the inconsistency that has plagued them pops up again at some point. It’s also conceivable the Celtics don’t rise any further than their current No. 5 spot.

But Boston is showing signs of life, and everything is aligning for the team to leap a few spots in the standings.

    What’s Next?

The Celtics will stay in town for a matchup with the Clippers on Monday. The Lakers will begin a five-game road trip against the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday.

Antonio Brown Trade Rumors: WR Seeking $18-20 Million Per Year on New Contract

Antonio Brown has already let any interested suitors know that he wants to get paid if/when he gets traded, and now, a price tag has reportedly been set.

Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com reported on Saturday that Brown is seeking $18 million to $20 million per season in a new contract.

The seven-time Pro Bowler is currently playing out a four-year, $68 million extension he signed back in February 2017. That contract, at the time, made him the highest-paid wideout in football.

He currently has three years and more than $36 million in base salary remaining on his current deal.

Brown initially claimed last month that his trade request had nothing to do with money, citing a lack of respect from within the organization instead:

    Antonio Brown @AB84

Not for the money its for the love of the sport ! The commitment to win relentlessly consistently passionately ! Plus I made 70 million it’s public record not to be cocky just truth! Time to play for my own Team AB84 the family ! https://t.co/v4vFO2QCSf

    Antonio Brown @AB84

No conflict just a matter of respect! Mutual respect! He has a owner mentality like he can call out anybody including coaches. Players know but they can’t say anything about it otherwise they meal ticket gone. It’s a dirty game within a game. #truth https://t.co/MsSyBVd3Ny

    Antonio Brown @AB84

After the coach tell the team I quit while nursing some bumps then invite me to watch the show with same guys thinking I quit i can not stand with that! I’m the bad guy doe we miss post season think about it https://t.co/imrJ8jnnBc

However, as the situation has gotten increasingly ugly as time passes, the outspoken wideout has continued to speak out on the matter.

In an Instagram live video last month (h/t NFL.com’s Kevin Patra), the self-proclaimed “Mr. Big Chest” made it clear that he wants guaranteed money from his next team:

“If your squad want to win and your squad want a hungry wide receiver who’s the best in the whole world, someone hit my phone. Tell them I ain’t doing no unguarantees. I ain’t even gonna play myself no more for this NFL. … I think I done everything. What y’all think? What’s left for me to do? Win a Super Bowl? Gotta be the right team for that, right? … If your team got guaranteed money, they want to get to know me and work with me, tell them to call me.”

NFL Network’s Aditi Kinkhabwala (h/t 93.7 The Fan’s Andrew Fillipponi) revealed on Wednesday that Brown’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, had promised his client a new contract with his new team.

It’s also worth noting that Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio previously reported Pittsburgh requested Brown delay his $2.5 million roster bonus beyond March 17 for cap reasons, but the 30-year-old declined.

Well, this saga has gone on for more than two months, and Brown remains a Steeler. While there appeared to be some momentum building toward a deal earlier this week, nothing has come from the rumors as of yet.

Brown may very well receive a new contract from a new team at some point, but for now, he must wait for a trade to be reached.

Coach K: Zion Williamson Expected to Return from Knee Injury for ACC Tournament

Duke star Zion Williamson is expected to make his highly anticipated return from injury next week at the ACC tournament in Charlotte, North Carolina, Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski announced, per CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson, on Saturday.

Thanks to a double bye, third-seeded Duke will not play in the ACC tournament until Thursday night at 9 p.m. ET.

There was speculation Williamson might suit up for Saturday’s showdown against archrival North Carolina after Coach K revealed the freshman had “a really good workout” Thursday. However, he was didn’t play in the 79-70 loss.

Per Patterson, Williamson participated in a no-contact workout Saturday and is expected to engage in contact Monday.

He has been sidelined since he suffered a Grade 1 right knee sprain on Feb. 20. The Blue Devils fell to 3-3 (including the first UNC game) since Williamson went down.

The 6’7″, 285-pound forward was not only positioning himself to be the top overall pick in June’s draft, but he was also making a strong case for National Player of the Year consideration.

He averaged 21.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.8 blocks per game.

The Blue Devils’ depth behind freshman star RJ Barrett has been exposed. But with Barrett (26.2 ppg in his last six games) playing well, Duke has remained in the mix for a No. 1 seed.

If Williamson returns for the ACC tournament, the selection committee will have an interesting dilemma next weekend. Duke, which was 23-2 before Williamson’s injury, looked like the heavy favorite to cut down the nets in April. However, a Zion-less Blue Devils squad has looked anything but elite.

Williamson and his teammates could make it easy on the selection committee by winning the conference tournament in Charlotte next week. But that may give three ACC teams a case for No. 1 seeds. Virginia (28-2) appears to be a virtual lock, and North Carolina’s (26-5) resume is arguably as good as anyone’s.

Regardless of seeding, Duke’s championship hopes will receive a huge boost should Williamson return next week.
