Iran President Rouhani in Baghdad to ‘expand ties with Iraq’

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has arrived in Baghdad in his first official visit to the nation that Tehran once fought a bloody war against and later backed in the battle with the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant group.

Rouhani was welcomed by Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed Ali Al-Hakim on Monday.

He will visit a Shia shrine in the Iraqi capital and then meet President Barham Salih and Prime Minister Abdel Abdul Mehdi, as well as visit other politicians and Shia leaders.

Since Rouhani’s election in 2013, Iraq has relied on Iranian paramilitary support to fight ISIL, also known as ISIS, following the group’s capture of the Iraqi city of Mosul and other territory in both Iraq and Syria.

Now, with the armed fighters facing a final territorial defeat in the Syrian village of Baghouz, Iran is looking for Iraq’s continued support as it faces a maximalist pressure campaign by President Donald Trump after his decision to withdraw the US from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers.

How will US sanctions affect Iran-Iraq economic relations?

Rouhani’s visit is a strong message to the US and its regional allies that Iran still dominates Baghdad, a key arena for rising tension between Washington and Tehran.

“We are very much interested to expand our ties with Iraq, particularly our transport cooperation,” Rouhani said at Tehran’s Mehrabad airport before departing for Iraq.

“We have important projects that will be discussed during this visit.”

During the three-day visit, a series of agreements will be signed in fields such as energy, transport, agriculture, industry and health, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported.

“Iraq is another channel for Iran to bypass America’s unjust sanctions imposed on Iran. This trip will provide opportunities for Iran’s economy,” a senior Iranian official, who is accompanying Rouhani, told Reuters news agency.

Increasing trade ties

The parlous state of Iran’s economy since US President Donald Trump’s decision last May to pull out of a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six major powers has pushed the country’s leaders to try to expand trade ties with its neighbours.

The agreement lifted sanctions that had been imposed by the US, European Union and United Nations in return for Iran’s curbs on its sensitive nuclear programme.

The Trump administration, which said the accord was too generous and failed to rein in Iran’s ballistic missile programme and its involvement in regional conflicts such as Syria and Yemen, reimposed sanctions on Tehran.

Other signatories to the deal have been trying to salvage the pact after the US exit, but US sanctions have largely scared off European companies from doing business with Iran.

The Europeans have promised to help firms do business with Iran as long as it abides by the deal. Iran has itself threatened to pull out of the 2015 deal unless EU powers demonstrably protect its economic benefits.

Speaking in a joint press conference with Iraq’s top diplomat Mohammed Ali al-Hakim on Sunday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said they had held “very good discussions”.

The Iranian foreign minister thanked Iraq for having “refused the injust and illegal sanctions imposed on the Iranian people” in reference to the US measures.

After Turkey, Iran is the top supplier of imported goods to Iraq, and Rouhani said his discussions with Hakim covered sectors including trade and health.

Iran and Iraq plan to raise annual bilateral trade to $20bn from the current level of $12bn, according to Rouhani. The bulk of the trade balance is tilted towards Iran with gas and energy exports.

“Rouhani is coming to discuss … trade between the countries [and] the issue of easing trade exchanges in Iraqi local currency and finding other ways, like Germany and Britain, to adopt an alternative European currency to circumvent US sanctions,” Iraqi political analyst Hisham al-Hashemi told AFP news agency.

Klay Thompson Criticizes Warriors Fans for Lack of Energy After Loss vs. Suns

Reinhold Matay/Associated Press

Following an embarrassing 115-111 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Sunday, Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson saved some of his scorn for the home fans at Oracle Arena.

I expect our crowd to be a little more into it too,” Thompson said, per Logan Murdock of NBC Sports Bay Area. “Like I know it’s not the playoffs but it is our last go around in Oracle, the least you can do is stand up when we make a good play.”

The Mercury News‘ Mark Medina shared Thompson’s full comments about the matter:

Mark Medina @MarkG_Medina

Klay Thompson not thrilled with the team’s effort. He’s not thrilled with the fans’ effort, either. https://t.co/vbyxzlZzIi

To some extent, Thompson’s words echo those of Warriors head coach Steve Kerr. While Kerr wasn’t referencing Warriors fans, he told reporters last week Golden State’s players needed to give a little extra effort in order to close out Oracle Arena in style.

The Warriors are moving into Chase Center in downtown San Francisco for the start of next season.

Whether it’s warranted or not, a star player criticizing his fans is almost never a winning strategy.

Dieter Kurtenbach @dkurtenbach

Nope nope nope nope nope, Klay. Nope.

Dieter Kurtenbach @dkurtenbach

Unsolicited, too. These guys lead the NBA in angst right now, and that’s saying something. https://t.co/cQHUMVrtMz

As much as the Warriors are battling a general sense of fatigue after having won three titles in four years, that same problem can extend to the fanbase as well. When you’ve seen your favorite team reach the NBA summit on multiple occasions—and witnessing beautiful basketball in the process—you might not get too revved up to witness a regular-season game against the NBA’s worst team.

Then there’s the feeling of inevitability that whatever happens before the playoffs is relatively meaningless for the Warriors as long as everybody stays healthy.

Golden State won nine fewer games in 2017-18 than it had the year before and finished seven games back of the top-seeded Houston Rockets. The team still put everything together in the postseason to claim the franchise’s sixth championship.

Thompson’s remarks will marinate for a little while before fans in the Bay Area have their chance to respond. The Warriors are embarking on a four-game road trip and won’t return to Oracle Arena until March 21 against the Indiana Pacers.

Sudanese protesters ‘defiant’ in face of Bashir’s emergency laws

As hundreds of protesters took the streets of Sudan‘s city of Omdurman, activists across the East African country called for sustained anti-government action to challenge emergency laws launched by President Omar al-Bashir last month.

The one-year state of emergencyannounced on February 22 lends state authorities extended powers to detain protesters and crack down on public gatherings, but activists protesting against Bashir for nearly three months say they are more determined than ever to take to the streets.

“Bashir’s announcement has only escalated the situation and made us more insistent on protesting to make our voices heard,” said Ahmed, an activist from Khartoum, whose real name was changed for security reasons.

“We heard Bashir’s announcement of the new laws while we waited in the streets so that we could react immediately. Sudan’s streets have been teaming with demonstrators since,” added Ahmed, who has taken part in the protests since they began on December 19.

Bashir’s announcement has only escalated the situation and made us more insistent on protesting to make our voices heard.

Ahmed, Sudanese activist

Protests, sparked by a government decision to increase the price of bread, quickly developed into nationwide anti-government demonstrations calling for Bashir to step down.

Bashir has since acknowledged the protests and taken several steps, which included quitting his position as as chairman of the ruling party, in attempt to appease the demonstrators. But activists say their demands have still not been met.

Extensive new powers

The presidential decree announced last month bans protests, public gatherings and political activities. It also gives the police and security forces more power to monitor individuals and to carry out inspections.

Under the new emergency laws, security forces are allowed to detain suspected individuals and to seize private property if they believe it is being used to plan political activities.

Sudan’s parliament is expected to vote on whether to continue the state of emergency or end it.

Analysts and human rights activists say the new laws are unprecedented in Sudan and can be used to stifle any resistance against the government.

“The state of emergency only makes the status quo much worse than it already was. It augments the already-extensive powers of the state security apparatus, namely the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS), in search, seizure and arrest,” said Muhammad Osman, an independent Sudanese analyst.

“They [security services] can now arbitrarily detain people for any period of time, search any building they want, confiscate any assets.

“The state of emergency will also allow the government to try people for anti-government comments on social media and will setup emergency courts to hand down summary sentences of prison against protesters,” explained Osman.

Special emergency courts, established to prosecute people arrested for participating in demonstrations, have already seen more than 800 protesters placed on trial since Bashir’s imposed state of emergency.

More defiant protesters

Ahmed, who was among a group of 69 protesters put on trial after being detained during a demonstration in Burri, east of Khartoum, on February 28, says these new measures have not intimidated him and his activist friends.

“I was arrested and detained for several days before being put on trial at a special court, and then released along with 66 others last Wednesday,” Ahmed told Al Jazeera.

Our immediate reaction to Bashir’s announcement was to call on the Sudanese people to protest in the streets, and that’s exactly what happened.

Mohamed Asbat, journalist and SPA spokesperson

“The violence we experienced at the hands of the security forces was brutal and has definitely increased since the presidential decree. But our arrest has only made us more defiant to continue.”

According to Mohamed Asbat, a Sudanese journalist and spokesman for the Sudanese Professional’s Association (SPA), an umbrella coalition that has led calls for nationwide protests and strikes, the new emergency powers will not stifle the protest movement.

“Our immediate reaction to Bashir’s announcement was to call on the Sudanese people to protest in the streets, and that’s exactly what happened,” Asbat told Al Jazeera.

“The streets became filled with protesters within a few minutes of the announcement and the number and intensity of the demonstrations has only been on the rise since,” he added.

Following Bashir’s announcement of the new laws, protesters staged overnight anti-government protests in hospitals and universities to challenge the new powers.

Several protests and a nationwide strike, which saw the participation of a large number of doctors, journalists, lawyers and pharmacists on March 5, have since been held across Sudan.

“While the state of emergency was aimed at weakening the protest movement, it has only worked in our favour, pushing us harder,” said Asbat.

Revised strategies?

Despite Bashir ordering on Friday the release of women protesters detained in the nationwide demonstrations, nine women were sentenced a day later to 20 lashes and one month in prison for rioting.

The move came after an emergency court sent on February 28 eight people to prison for protesting, sentencing four to five-year terms and the rest to three-year sentences.

Following Saturday’s court decision against the female protesters, the SPA released a statement on Sunday to condemn the move.

“The Sudanese people were shocked and deeply disappointed by the emergency courts’ decision to severely punish nine female protesters in Khartoum.

“We condemn the involvement of the judiciary with the emergency courts’ attempt to silence the Sudanese people and prevent us from practising our right to hold peaceful protests.”

Such prosecutions have led analysts to believe that although the immediate reaction of the protesters to the emergency laws has been to challenge them, the new powers may eventually weaken the movement.

“If the government prosecutes and sentences a large number of activists to lengthy periods in prison, the strength of the protests is likely to be affected,” Osman told Al Jazeera.

“That in turn will force the leadership organising the protests, the Sudanese Professionals Association, to explore other and less costly options of resistance.”

Imagine, you’re about to see one of the most anticipated films of the year, and the movie’s star turns up to serve you popcorn.

That’s exactly what happened for cinema-goers about to watch Captain Marvel in New Jersey, when Carol Danvers herself, Brie Larson, turned up for a surprise visit on Saturday.

SEE ALSO: Captain Marvel comics to read if you’re excited about the movie

Wearing a kickass Captain Marvel tracksuit and sipping a soda from a cup with her own face on it, Larson dropped by the AMC theater in Clifton Commons on the opening weekend for the latest instalment of the MCU.

“I just heard that I was on the cups and popcorn and I wanted to see for myself,” Larson told the understandably excited audience.

Earlier, Larson had even jumped behind the candy bar, serving up popcorn and soda like a hero.

Of course, there were gleeful selfies aplenty to be taken with the Marvel star.

“Sometimes @brielarson just comes to say hi at your movie theater and you gotta act like she isn’t on your shirt,” wrote Instagram user @yarazardz.

It’s the latest in a series of strong promotional activities for Captain Marvel, including a double Danvers situation at the European Gala, the film’s tie-wearing cat star at the world premiere, and these nostalgic optical illusion movie posters which will either delight or infuriate you.

Captain Marvel is in cinemas now, and is absolutely crushing it at the box office — whether you like it or not.

LB Dante Fowler Jr., Rams Agree to New 1-Year Contract Ahead of NFL Free Agency

LOS ANGELES, CA - NOVEMBER 11: Dante Fowler #56 of the Los Angeles Rams celebrates his sack and fumble recovery in the fourth quarter during a 36-31 win over the Seattle Seahawks at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on November 11, 2018 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)

The Los Angeles Rams re-signed free-agent linebacker Dante Fowler Jr., the team announced Sunday. The Rams didn’t reveal the full details of the extension.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the agreement is for a one-year contract.

Although free agency doesn’t begin until Wednesday, Los Angeles has already made a pair of big defensive splashes this offseason. The team agreed to a two-year, $10.5 million deal with veteran safety Eric Weddle, according to Rapoport.

The Rams acquired Fowler last October from the Jacksonville Jaguars, sending a 2019 third-round draft pick and a 2020 fifth-rounder to Jacksonville.

Fowler generally had a disappointing spell with the Jaguars, who selected him third overall in the 2015 draft. His play improved slightly in Los Angeles. He had 21 combined tackles and two sacks in eight appearances for the NFC champions.

Pro Football Focus’ Michael Renner was a bit down on Fowler as a free-agent target, though:

“There are two big positives in Fowler’s corner at this point: he was a top-five pick and is only 24 years old. They, unfortunately, don’t include much in the way of on-field performance. If the Rams traded a third rounder for a half season of Fowler is any indication, he’ll sign a fairly healthy deal this offseason. There’s really nothing from his performance on the field that can justify that. He’s yet to notch a pass-rushing grade of 70.0 for an entire season as he disappears for long stretches at a time.”

Fowler staying with the Rams will have a ripple effect on the free-agent market.

Connor Hughes @Connor_J_Hughes

The #Jets had interest in Dante Fowler. Said earlier this week the #Rams wanted him back.

And that’s what happened. Fowler has re-signed with Rams, as @AdamSchefter said.

Matt Maiocco @MaioccoNBCS

There goes an edge rusher the #49ers were likely to pursue as a free agent. Dante Fowler will reportedly not reach the open negotiating period. https://t.co/J1Bo1Zs9hG

While Fowler is sacrificing long-term security, signing a one-year deal is the best move for both him and the Rams.

Los Angeles gets to have him for a full season before potentially making a much bigger commitment next spring. If Fowler doesn’t take a big step forward, then letting him walk might be the sensible idea.

Fowler, meanwhile, can play himself into a far bigger contract down the line. Even if he had turned down the Rams’ offer to hit unrestricted free agency, it seems unlikely he would’ve had a wealth of massive deals on the table.

That the Jaguars declined his $14.2 million option for 2019 was a damning indictment as to how poorly things had gone to that point.

Now, Fowler has the opportunity to prove himself as an elite pass-rusher in order to cash in when he’s once again a free agent a year from now.

Malaysia: Kim Jong Nam murder suspect freed by court

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – An Indonesian woman accused in the killing of the North Korean leader’s half brother was released after the prosecutor withdrew the murder charge.

Vietnamese national Doan Thi Huong, 28, was also charged with the murder and remained in the court on Monday.

An Indonesian diplomatic vehicle was seen carrying Siti Aisyah, 25, away from the court after a judge announced the discharge. No reasons were given by the prosecution for its decision to drop the murder case.

Siti’s lawyer Gooi Soon Seng said the woman was grateful that she’d been freed.

She is very happy. Anyone who has been incarcerated for two years … of course she cried. Tears of joy,” Gooi said.

The women were accused of killing Kim Jong Nam by smearing a toxic agent, known as VX, on his face while he was at Kuala Lumpur’s airport on February 13, 2017.

He was the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who reportedly had a falling out with the regime and lived in exile.

Gooi said there was no “direct evidence” of the Indonesian woman’s involvement in the killing.

“We truly believe she’s a scapegoat and she is innocent as we laid out [before],” he said.

Indonesia Ambassador Rusdi Kirana expressed gratidude for the decision.

“We feel the court is fair. She’s our daughter. Every Indonesian is our children,” Rusdi said.

Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron can’t save awkward rom-com ‘Long Shot’

At least Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron are cute together.

Stranger things have happened than a schlubby Brooklyn writer hooking up with a glamorous secretary of state. What pushes Long Shot from unexpected to downright unbelievable, however, is the context in which this coupling takes place.

The film, directed by Jonathan Levine and written by Liz Hannah and Dan Sterling, seems determined to comment on our current political climate — yet the world it creates feels so far removed from our own, it may as well exist in an alternate dimension.

SEE ALSO: Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron couple up in trailer for ‘Long Shot’

At least its stars are lovable in any universe. Seth Rogen plays Fred Flarsky, who is most economically described as a Seth Rogen type: shaggy, sweet, and Too Much in a way that comes all the way back around to endearing.

Though he seems on paper like an odd fit for Charlize Theron’s elegant Charlotte Field — that is the premise of this movie, after all — their romance feels grounded in sincere affection, mutual admiration, and shared values. There’s real poignancy in his efforts to help her live a little, and Theron and Rogen seem like they’re having a blast trying to make each other laugh.

If Long Shot were just about these two opposites attracting, that chemistry, along with the colorful supporting characters (June Diane Raphael is especially side-splitting as a campaign manager who can’t be bothered), might be enough to keep the whole thing afloat. Unfortunately, it grafts this simple love story onto a far more ambitious one about gender and politics.

Please hook up in another, better movie.

Please hook up in another, better movie.

Image: Hector Alvarez / Lionsgate

Long Shot gets that being women in the public sphere face challenges that men don’t, that men still have deeply ambivalent feelings about women in power, that the political game demands so many compromises that it can be easy to lose sight of what it’s all for in the first place. The characters talk about all these things all the time.

But the film’s insights into these issues never go beyond “read a Vox explainer one time” level. It glosses over how ugly and complicated these realities are, and offers solutions so simplistic that I didn’t know whether to laugh or groan. By the time it begins expounding on the importance of seeing both sides, it’s become very clear that the Long Shot universe split off from our own several years ago.

Maybe five or ten years ago, these observations would have felt surprising. In this day and age, they feel self-congratulatory.

Maybe five or ten years ago, these observations would have felt surprising in a studio rom-com. In this day and age, they feel self-congratulatory. Long Shot is savvy enough to observe that even men who claim to like powerful women rarely do, but too oblivious to notice that by positioning Fred, our audience identification character, as the rare guy who actually does, it’s essentially declaring “not all men.”

Certainly, there’s an argument to be made here that that’s part of the fantasy. Here, finally, is a woman who might actually get to have it all, from the the groundbreaking career to the lofty ideals to the supportive boyfriend. And a man who gets to have it all, too — the meaningful job, the beautiful girlfriend, and the blissful imperviousness to society’s toxic messaging about men, women, and heterosexual relationships.

It’s that last one that gets me. Long Shot seems to think it’s presenting a female fantasy and a male one simultaneously, and yet it’s the female character who struggles most, who faces the harsher societal injustices, who has to learn the biggest lessons in the end. Meanwhile, the male character stumbles haphazardly into the life of his dreams and endures only the most half-hearted efforts at self-reflection.

And if it seems like I’m being too harsh on what is, in the end, just a fluffy, well-intentioned comedy — well, take it up with Fred Flarsky. He wouldn’t compromise on his vision of a better world, and I refuse to, either.

The red-hot Houston Rockets extended their winning streak to eight and further solidified their grip on the Western Conference’s No. 3 seed with a dramatic 94-93 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday at American Airlines Center.

Dallas has lost five in a row and is an ugly 1-10 in its last 11 games but had an opportunity to win at the buzzer before Chris Paul swatted Jalen Brunson’s jumper to clinch Houston’s win.

The Golden State Warriors are a mere 4-5 in their last nine games, leaving the door open for a potential Western Conference challenger.

Houston was more than just a challenger when it was ahead 3-2 in last year’s Western Conference Finals with home-court advantage looming in Game 7. However, Paul’s hamstring injury derailed the Rockets, as the Warriors proceeded to win two straight and then sweep the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals.

The Rockets were left wondering what could have been, especially when they started slowly this season with Paul and Capela both sidelined by injuries. Harden had to carry the offense by himself, which led to incredible individual accolades but inconsistent team success.

Paul and Capela are now back, which has taken the pressure off Harden and created a scenario where the team can rely on pick-and-rolls, lob passes and two ball-handling guards who can break down a defense when the game is hanging in the balance.

Bleacher Report @BleacherReport

James Harden could go scoreless the rest of the season and still average 28.6 PPG…which would lead the league

(H/T @NBA_Reddit) https://t.co/N66KMWV4zt

The result is eight straight wins, with four of them coming against realistic contenders in the Warriors, Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors and Philadelphia 76ers.

Houston is also 3-0 against Golden State this season, which figures to breed confidence leading into a potential Western Conference Finals rematch. While the Denver Nuggets are the No. 2 seed in the standings, the Rockets are the true threat after the Warriors’ 17-point dismissal of the Nuggets in a reality-check game on Friday.

It was a reminder to a Denver team that hasn’t even made the playoffs since the 2012-13 campaign that it isn’t ready to compete with the champions just yet.

The Rockets proved they are ready in last year’s battle and have been again in all of their head-to-head showdowns this season.

They also have Paul, who is a nine-time All-Defensive selection, to at least make Stephen Curry work for his shots as a physical presence who can hound him over the course of a seven-game series. They have been battling each other throughout their entire careers, and Paul’s block on Sunday served as a reminder of what he is capable of on that end.

Houston Rockets @HoustonRockets

.@CP3 passes Isiah Thomas for 7th all-time in assists! https://t.co/FzR6mrmuVQ

It capped off a game that saw Dallas turn it over 16 times and shoot 28.1 percent from deep.

That the Rockets won with defense against the Mavericks is no surprise considering they are sixth in the league in defensive rating in the last eight games. That stands in stark contrast to their 24th ranking for the entire season, per NBA.com, and is a testament to Capela protecting the rim and Paul bothering ball-handlers.

Capela can also battle Draymond Green and DeMarcus Cousins on the inside, while Houston can make Curry work on the defensive side by targeting him in pick-and-rolls with Harden and forcing him to switch on to the reigning MVP. Every ounce of energy Curry uses on defense is that much less he has for his perimeter shooting.

The Rockets are playing with a renewed defensive effort and two perimeter forces to take over in crunch time. The Nuggets may be the No. 2 seed, but Houston is the only true threat to the champs.

What’s Next?

Both teams are home for their next game with the Rockets facing the Charlotte Hornets on Monday and the Mavericks playing the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday.

‘Be More Chill’ review: It’s sexist, reductive and teens are obsessed

If you aren’t already familiar with Be More Chill, a Broadway musical that opened Sunday, it’s likely a teen in your life can clue you in.

The show, adapted from the YA novel by Ned Vizzini about an anxious high schooler who takes a pill to become popular, originally premiered in New Jersey in 2015, and, despite lukewarm reviews, slowly found a cult following, with a cast album that’s been streamed tens of millions of times. Needless to say, the show has serious buzz, with The Wall Street Journal noting, “It’s gonna hit big,” and a movie adaptation already in the works.

Unfortunately, for all the excitement of another musical aimed at young people, this one lacks the emotional depth of Dear Evan Hansen, the powerful music of Spring Awakening, or the mostly-sharp satire of Mean Girls (though it does have a very similar number about teens on Halloween!).

SEE ALSO: Despite amazing puppetry, ‘King Kong’ on Broadway is a mess

Meet Jeremy (Dear Evan Hansen‘s Will Roland), a nerdy high school outsider who just wants to be popular and get his manic pixie dream theater girl of a crush Christine (an over-the-top Stephanie Hsu) to kiss him. His first idea is to join the activity she likes, but the opening number, “More Than Survive,” finds him singing, “It’s a sign up sheet for the after-school play! It’s a sign up sheet for getting called gay!”

Um, what year is this?

It’s grating, and makes it difficult to connect with or care about any of the characters

After a run-in with cool bully Rich (Spring Awakening‘s Gerard Canonico), Jeremy is told he can be popular, too, he just needs to ingest a supercomputer in pill-sized form called “The Squip” (a funny, Keanu Reeves-esque Jason Tam) to instruct him on his every move. Naturally, things go south fast.

Directed by Stephen Brackett, the show is a technicolor, high energy swirl of buzzwords and ideas that a corporate boardroom thought might appeal to Today’s Youth but miss the mark. An extremely forgettable pop-rock score by Joe Iconis? Check. Some jokes and songs about our smartphone addictions/the dangers of tech? Yup. A tossed-in Ruth Bader Ginsberg name-check and a random ending revelation about a character being bi? You’d better believe it.

Some of Be More Chill works. It’s a fun and rare idea for a musical to have a sci-fi twist, and as Jeremy’s sidekick best friend Michael, George Salazar gives a funny and empathetic performance; his second act ballad “Michael in the Bathroom” is an emotional and musical high point. But Michael is an exception: a majority of the students appear to be cartoons all dialed up to 12 for the entire run time, with no tongue-in-cheek wink to the audience letting on it’s satire. The choice is grating, and makes it difficult to connect with or care about any of the characters.

More unfortunately, two of those students are dim, pretty popular girls who appear to exist solely for the audience to laugh at. The story wouldn’t change at all if these young women (portrayed by Katlyn Carlson and Lauren Marcus) were smart, or mean, or athletic, or just about any other adjective other than the oldest high school stereotypes about teenage girls in the book.

It’s more than a bit disappointing that a show that centers its messaging on being yourself spends a not-insignificant portion of its run time reminding people that Jeremy is Unique and Good because he is an anxious “loser, geek, whatever” while these young women are not worthy of the same compassionate consideration. It’s far from the first show to do this, obviously, but it sucks that this holdover from another era remains.

Maybe I should just be more chill? Perhaps. But the recent surge of musicals aimed at the teen experience — the aforementioned Dear Evan Hansen, this season’s heartfelt The Prom — show the ways that coming-of-age tales can twist and turn to meet the moment they are arriving in.

But Be More Chill doesn’t grapple with the issues right in front of its face. It wants to say something profound about the pressures of being a young person in 2019, but instead settles for a stereotype-filled retrograde story straight out of the ’80s.

Paraglider lands, immediately gets attacked by kangaroo

Well, this is some defence system.

A paraglider had an unexpected clash with a kangaroo, after landing at the Orroral Valley Space Tracking Station in Australia.

In a video posted on Friday, the kangaroo hops over to Jonathan Bishop as he lands, only for it to take a few swings at him on the ground.

“I had been paragliding cross country for two hours near Canberra and had reached a position where I had to land,” Bishop explained in the video description.

“I was concentrating on the landing and didn’t notice the kangaroo until after I landed. As it ran towards me I thought it was being friendly so I said, ‘What’s up, Skip?’ It then attacked me twice before hopping away. I packed up my paraglider and had to walk several kilometers to get phone reception and call a friend to come and collect me.”

Despite their cute, timid appearance, the encounter is another reminder that kangaroos are still wild animals, and thus can be aggressive towards people.
