The 8 absolute cringiest Michael Scott quotes in ‘The Office’ history

As the vast and fervent fandom of The Office knows, March 15 is notable for two, and only two, birthdays: those of Michael Scott and Eva Longoria, a fun fact Scott points out in the Season 2 episode “Michael’s Birthday.”

His follow-up about having an icebreaker if he ever meets Longoria’s Desperate Housewives co-star is … just so inherently Michael.

Image: Mashable Composite; The Office/Netflix

The episode is a great reminder of just how cringe-worthy Michael can get. He insists the entire office celebrate his birthday as opposed to worrying about accountant Kevin, who may or may not have skin cancer.

But isn’t this Michael’s primary job, to make us totally cringe while he barely dabbles in managing the Scranton branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company?

Steve Carell brought the character’s most frustrating aspects to life as vividly as he did the heartwarming ones. (I don’t think I’ve been as physically uneasy as I was watching Michael interrupt Phyllis and Bob’s nuptials to announce them as a married couple before poor Bob gets a chance to say “I do.”)

And so, as my gift to Michael Scott on his 55th birthday — and to all of us except Eva Longoria/Teri Hatcher, on any given day — here are the Michael Scott moments that would truly embarrass any living human … anyone but Michael Scott, that is.

1. “Diversity Day” — Season 1, Episode 2

When Michael took over for corporate liaison Mr. Brown to conduct diversity training, his method included sticking an ethnic label on every employee’s head, making them act out stereotypes, and then saying out loud that he didn’t have anyone be an Arab because it would be “too explosive.”

Literally no one except his right hand man Dwight Schrute seems enthusiastic, and Michael ends up getting slapped by Kelly Kapoor (Mindy Kaling) for badly imitating an Indian accent.

2. “Sexual Harassment” — Season 2, Episode 2

Michael spends the episode getting schooled by corporate on appropriate workplace behavior. Despite this, when someone makes fun of how his employee Phyllis looks, he attempts to make her feel better by giving her a quick kiss on the cheek and telling her he’s now worried about getting a boner.

You don’t need to see her expression to know that she is not amused.

Image: MASHABLE COMPOSITE; THE OFFICE/NETFLIX

3. “The Injury” — Season 2, Episode 12

After barely injuring his foot on a George Foreman grill in this iconic episode, Michael uses crutches to walk around at work and boldly refers to himself as disabled. When his employees make fun of him, he asks if any of them know what it’s like to face disability.

Phyllis says she had scoliosis as a young girl, but apparently that’s not a satisfactory answer.

Image: MASHABLE COMPOSITE; THE OFFICE/NETFLIX

4. “A Benihana Christmas” — Season 3, Episode 10

Michael’s girlfriend/real-estate agent Carol dumps him for being too extra, which, understandable. In his tearful state, he doesn’t hesitate to call her his “ho.” The “you” he’s referring to here is … himself.

Later in the episode, he is unable to tell which of two Asian waitresses from Benihana is his date to the office Christmas party.

Classic dick moves all around.

Image: MASHABLE COMPOSITE; THE OFFICE/NETFLIX

5. “Phyllis’s Wedding” — Season 3, Episode 16

Ah, yes, this is my favorite episode to watch when I want to recoil with discomfort.

It’s Phyllis’s wedding and Michael has taken it upon himself to steal the show. He’s supposed to push her father’s wheelchair down the aisle, but midway, the dad decides to walk by himself.

Clearly shaken at his limelight being stolen, Michael proceeds to slow walk to the altar as everyone looks on. The horror.

Image: MASHABLE COMPOSITE; THE OFFICE/NETFLIX

6. “Chair Model” — Season 4, Episode 14

Look who’s back in the dating game! Michael, upon breaking up with girlfriend Jan, asks his employees to abandon everything in the middle of a work day and set him up on a date.

Phyllis has someone great in mind, but he crushes his chances when the first question he asks is about her weight.

On the plus side, Kevin tricks him into calling a Wendy’s by making him assume Wendy is a woman.

Image: MASHABLE COMPOSITE; THE OFFICE/NETFLIX

6. “Double Date” — Season 6, Episode 9

Michael breaks up with Helene, his former secretary’s Pam’s mom, on her birthday (!) — as a cake-eating Jim and Pam observe in shock (!!) — for being “too old” (!!!).

It’s horrifying because he dated Pam’s mom when Pam explicitly told him not to, and now, when Pam is finally okay with it, Michael ends things at literally the worst possible moment using the worst possible words.

Image: MASHABLE COMPOSITE; THE OFFICE/NETFLIX

7. “Scott’s Tots” — Season 6, Episode 12

This is an episode I’m sure most fans of The Office tend to skip during their rewatch. It’s entirely cringe-inducing, and not in a funny way.

Michael has to break the news to some high-school graduating kids that he can’t, as promised 10 years earlier, actually sponsor their college tuition. They’ve just gotta deal with the fact that they can’t go to college now. As compensation, he offers them all laptop chargers.

Can I just say, his own intuition coulda and shoulda guided him better.

Image: MASHABLE COMPOSITE; THE OFFICE/NETFLIX

8. “Body Language” — Season 6, Episode 23

Michael is excited to welcome his crush and potential client Donna, a bar manager, to the office. He spends the entire episode trying to kiss her and loops everyone at work — including Jim and Pam, who are doing the sales pitch for her — into very reluctantly giving him advice.

When she walks in, he comes up with quite the greeting. Yikes.

Image: MASHABLE COMPOSITE; THE OFFICE/NETFLIX

So, yeah. Happy birthday, Michael — it’s a big one.

Bangladesh cricketers narrowly dodge New Zealand mosque attack

Bangladesh’s national cricket team have narrowly dodged one of the mosque attacks in New Zealand, which together have killed at least 49 people.

During Friday prayers, attackers entered two mosques in the city of Christchurch and opened fire on worshippers in what has been called the worst attack in New Zealand’s history.

Members of the Bangladeshi team were en route to pray at the Masjid Al Noor Mosque ahead of a scheduled Test match against hosts New Zealand, according to Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Star.

However, when the players were about to enter the mosque, a woman warned them that there was shooting inside and the team took cover on the floor of their bus.

“Entire team got saved from active shooters!!! Frightening experience and please keep us in your prayers,” batsman Tamim Iqbal wrote on Twitter following the attack.

Entire team got saved from active shooters!!! Frightening experience and please keep us in your prayers #christchurchMosqueAttack

— Tamim Iqbal Khan (@TamimOfficial28) March 15, 2019

“Allah save[d] us today while shooting in Christchurch in the mosque … we r [are] extremely lucky … never want to see this things happen again” Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim wrote on Twitter.

The team had been due to play a third Test match against New Zealand on Saturday at the Hagley Oval Cricket Ground, which is close to the Masjid Al Noor Mosque.

The match was cancelled following the attacks.

‘Darkest days’

Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the attacks, according to New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush.

An Australian national and a woman are among the detained suspects. One gunman shared a live stream of the attack on Facebook and posted content on Instagram.

Police have urged people in central Christchurch to stay indoors and have warned worshippers not to visit mosques “anywhere in New Zealand”.

The Australian-born suspect published a manifesto, decrying the “decaying” culture of the white, European, Western world and rallying against immigration and multiculturalism.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Friday’s attacks would go down as one of the country’s “darkest days”, adding that the assault on the mosques appeared to be a well-planned “terrorist attack”.

“Many of those who would have been affected by this shooting may be migrants to New Zealand. They may even be refugees here,” Arden said.

“They have chosen to make New Zealand their home and it is their home … they are us. The persons who perpetrated this violence against us … have no place in New Zealand”.

This unsettling song from Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ is perfect for quiet solo nights at home

By Shannon Connellan

Freak yourself out by turning this one up in your headphones this evening.

A sneak peek of the soundtrack to Jordan Peele’s new psychological thriller Us has landed, with the haunting “Tethered Mix” of “I Got 5 on It” from Oakland duo Luniz featuring Michael Marshall.

You might have heard it before in the film’s frightening trailer, but according to Pitchfork, on the soundtrack you can also expect the score by composer Michael Abels, alongside tracks by Janelle Monae and Minnie Riperton.

While Us premiered at SXSW, it’s in theatres March 22. Luckily for you, the soundtrack is out March 15, perfect for quiet nights at home with yourself.

Ariana Grande’s Sweetener Tour: 11 Things To Know Before You Go

Getty Images

This spring is about to get a whole lot sweeter!

After two albums, a Grammy, a few chart-topping hits, and a couple signature Starbucks drinks, Ariana Grande is set to kick off her hotly anticipated Sweetener Tour on Monday (March 18) in Albany, New York. Ari will jet-set all over the U.S. and Canada until mid-July before she takes the tour overseas from August to October.

So what can Arianators expect when the superstar hits the stage? She’s been careful not to reveal much in the way of sets or costumes, but she has teased, “it’s my favorite stage i’ve eva had for sure.” The “7 rings” singer has also been flooding her feed with some BTS shots that showcase her talented team and the furry friends who will join her on the road. Below, see everything else we know about the Sweetener Tour (a.k.a., the Sweetener/Thank U, Next Tour!).

  1. The setlist will span both of her most recent albums

In a tweet, Ari said that she plans on “doing as much of the two new albums as possible,” referring to 2018’s Sweetener and this year’s thank u, next. That’s a lot of material to pack into one setlist, which could mean fans are in for some creative medleys and mash-ups. There’s also the question of whether or not she’ll perform certain Sweetener songs at all (cough cough, “pete davidson”).

  2. Don’t expect to hear “ghostin” live, either

As beautiful as this thank u, next ballad is, it’s also unsurprisingly tough for Grande to perform live. Answering a fan who asked if she’ll sing it on tour, she admitted, “if i can get thru it yea but right now it’s not on the set list. i jus want to have a good time with y’all and like …. make it thru the show lol.” Elaborating on the raw, strings-laden number, Grande told Zach Sang, “It’s a lot. It’s like, too much, actually. … It is really beautiful, but, you know, I don’t listen to that one.”

  3. The visuals are going to be stunning

How do we know? Because Ari’s already revealed that she and go-to director Hannah Lux Davis recently shot a bunch of visuals for the trek. Davis, of course, is the eye behind such recent music video masterpieces as “thank u, next,” “7 rings,” and “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored,” so expect these visuals to be similarly epic.

  4. The tour’s opening acts are to die for, beginning with Grande’s trusty producing team Social House. The duo — made up of L.A.-based musicians Michael “Mikey” Foster and Charles “Scootie” Anderson — co-produced “thank u, next” and “7 rings,” and they’re certified hitmakers in their own right. Not only that, but former Fifth Harmony siren Normani will be joining the trek, flexing her solo prowess after a steady stream of recent releases, including “Waves” and “Slow Down.” For the overseas Arianators, “Boo’d Up” singer Ella Mai will assume opening duties on the tour’s European leg.

  5. Her pups are coming along

Grande’s already shared peeks at the skincare pod and the portable vocal steamer that’ll have her in tip-top shape for the tour. But emotional self-care is just as important, which is why she’s bringing a couple of her furry pals along for the ride. To absolutely no one’s surprise, Toulouse and Myron are joining the trek, while it looks like music video star Piggy Smallz may sadly be sitting this one out.

  6. She’ll perform a couple of throwback faves

Grande teased on Twitter that two songs from her 2013 LP Yours Truly made the cut, as did the My Everything fan-favorite track “Only 1.” She performed that deep cut at her L.A. Sweetener Sessions concert back in August, and I can confirm that it does slap live.

  7. Clear bags are where it’s at

Given that this is Grande’s first tour since the attack in Manchester, it’s understandable that she and her team are making safety a top priority. That’s why the pop star recently announced that only clear bags will be permitted inside the venues, “so everything can go as smoothly and safely as possible.” She’s even selling clear Sweetener World Tour tote bags, wristlets, and fanny packs on her website, because why not make safety fashionable?!

  8. The tour may spawn another docu-series

Grande’s trusty videographer Alfredo Flores was on hand during the entire Dangerous Woman trek, capturing all the action behind the scenes and on stage. The fruits of his labor hit YouTube late last year when the four-part Dangerous Woman Diaries premiered — and, judging by the above tweet, it sounds like he’ll do something similar with the new tour.

  9. “God Is A Woman” may look similar to the VMAs

In a recent rehearsal pic, Ari and her crew of dancers join hands while seated side-by-side at a long table. That setup echoes her performance of “GIAW” at last year’s VMAs, where she and her dancers recreated the Last Supper with an intricately choreographed set. Looks like fans might be seeing similar choreo on tour!

  10. “thank u, next” is going to sound amazing with a live band

I mean… the video is all the proof you need. What a dream, indeed.

  11. It’s going to be emotional for everyone involved

If you think seeing the Sweetener Tour is going to be an affecting experience for you, rest assured Ari’s feeling the same way. In a recent letter to fans, she wrote, “about to embark on my third tour and am for sure deep as fuck in my feelings. … i’m just grateful to be here still. and excited to see you. i’m prolly gonna cry a lot.”

She continued, “a few months ago i told my team i wasn’t even in an okay enough place to tour or work at all and my friends, you guys and this music really saved my life and turned everything around. i’m still healing but i feel a lot lighter as of late and i think this is really going to be such a beautiful time. thank god we are doing this.”

So there you have it — Grande is committed to making this tour a beautiful experience, and you can do the same by singing your heart out when she comes through your city. Happy Sweetener Tour, everyone!

Syracuse’s Frank Howard Denies Trying to Trip Duke’s Zion Williamson

Duke star Zion Williamson‘s return to the court Thursday was flawless, though Syracuse’s Frank Howard became the source of controversy in the first half.

Early in Duke’s 84-72 win, Howard stuck his foot out in what seemed like an attempt to trip Williamson:

SportsCenter @SportsCenter

Syracuse’s Frank Howard appeared to attempt to trip Zion Williamson early in the first half. https://t.co/aNUUebKMXH

When asked about the incident after the game, Howard denied any wrongdoing:

Donna Ditota @DonnaDitota1

Frank on Zion: I was just shown the video. I’m not going to wait 4 years to get to this position to trip somebody. Said he has a lot of respect for Zion.

Howard added the following, per Donna Ditota of Syracuse.com: “He tripped over my foot, and I said, ‘Oh, I was not trying to trip you.’ He was running back, I’m trying to get open. I’m being face-guarded. I didn’t see the whole video, so I don’t even want to answer too many questions about that. There isn’t really much more to talk about.”

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said afterward: “As far as what people were commenting on at halftime, I talked to Frank, I looked at the video; there was no trip involved out there. I don’t know who was talking about that, but it was a bump, and…that’s it. It was nothing there. Trying to manufacture something out of nothing.”

Williamson showed no lingering effects from a knee injury that cost him five games, as the ACC Player of the Year had 29 points, 14 rebounds and five steals on a perfect 13-of-13 shooting.

Controversy aside, Howard did everything in his power to keep Syracuse in the game, leading the Orange with a career-high 28 points.

We regret to inform you it’s tax season once again.

Sadly, every year the time comes when people must either sit in front of a bunch of paperwork and think about their finances, or pay someone else to do it for them.

Filing taxes is an extremely unpleasant and confusing task, so it makes sense that many people put it off for as long as possible. If you’re a tax procrastinator, you’re not alone, and while we definitely won’t do your taxes for you, we’d love to help entertain you while you agonize over them.

Why I love, love, love ‘Captain Marvel’ and everything it stands for

Warning: Mild spoilers for Captain Marvel lie ahead.

Slap a 100% Certified Fresh sticker on my forehead and call me a hype man because I loved Captain Marvel. No ifs, ands, or buts. I just really, really, really loved this movie.

The undeniably fantastic Black Panther notwithstanding, I generally don’t obsess over the MCU. Sure, I’ve seen nearly every movie in its canon and can give you a simplified rundown on its most central plot lines — I mean, I work at Mashable: Home of the Marvel Obsession, and am also alive in 2019 — but broadly speaking, superhero movies rarely stick with me for more than a few hours.

Captain Marvel broke that mold, and I’m proud to say I have been researching everything about my new favorite Avenger, her Flerken companion, and her role in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame battle since the moment I left the theater.

SEE ALSO: Who’s who in ‘Captain Marvel’

Considering I am a white woman in my twenties, it makes a lot of sense that I would relate to Carol Danvers, a white woman in her twenties. But, more than relating to Carol or being excited by the much needed representation she is bringing to the MCU, I was enthralled and delighted by nearly every moment she appeared on-screen.

Meeting a character I knew I would love so deeply felt electric.

Less than 10 minutes into my Captain Marvel screening, I could feel myself hip-pocketing Carol’s hilarious dialogue for later quoting, eating up her effortlessly cool (but not too cool) demeanor, and positioning her in my head as the obvious leader for the Avengers.

She is the incorporation of Iron Man’s arrogance, Thor’s bravery, Black Widow’s cunning, and Star-Lord’s 20th century flair, but better. Meeting a character I knew I would love so deeply felt electric. It was an experience I hadn’t enjoyed since first seeing Steve Rogers morph into Captain America in 2011.

As Carol slowly unseated Steve from the throne of Avengers’ Best Captain (existent only in my mind), she simultaneously escaped the box I had unknowingly put her in prior to seeing the movie. Captain Marvel wasn’t the cookie-cutter female hero I had expected. I wasn’t jumping up and down for her girl power, nor was I vicariously unleashing my feminist rage through each of her super-charged punches.

In fact, at many points during Captain Marvel, Carol’s femaleness escaped me entirely. In her complete, theatrical form, Carol isn’t a “female superhero.” She is a superhero, full stop, and a completely kickass one at that.

Skip the “female,” just say badass.

    Image: marvel studios

The experience of seeing the first Marvel movie with a solo female lead was made better by nearly forgetting I was seeing the first Marvel movie with a solo female lead. She wasn’t overtly sexualized, like Black Widow, or pushed into a heterosexual romance, like Scarlet Witch, or positioned as the only woman in a group of men, like Gamora.

Watching the charismatic Captain Marvel spar with Fury, fight Skrulls then S.H.I.E.L.D. then Kree, and slowly uncover her own origin story felt as true-blue Avenger as the MCU gets. Only the film’s overt feminist sign-posting, like that “I don’t have to prove anything to you” line, reminded me of what this movie represented within the bigger picture.

That bigger picture isn’t why I first fell in love with Captain Marvel — that was all Carol — but it is what has kept me in love with it since my first showing. Actress Brie Larson has championed some truly rad pro-woman PR throughout the film’s release, and witnessing girls’ and women’s reactions to her message feels as uniting as any battle cry. It is a marvelous time to be a female fan in the MCU.

It doesn't hurt that Brie Larson is a complete rockstar.

Beyond that, I can gush over the specifics of this movie ad nauseam. I can tell you why I think Goose is the best sidekick in any universe, why young Fury is maybe even hotter than Thor, why Captain Marvel‘s ’90s soundtrack is ten times better than the music of Guardians: Vol. 1 and 2 combined, and why Carol is clearly the key to reversing the traumatizing events of Infinity War.

But do yourself a favor: Enjoy exploring the world of Captain Marvel for yourself. Go see or re-see this movie as soon as you can, because if it’s meant for you, you’ll know — and it’ll be hard to get enough.

Captain Marvel is in theaters now.
