Venezuelan students use risky crossing to get to Colombia school

Cucuta, Colombia  Cielo leaves her home in Venezuela at 04:30am every day to get to school in Colombia.

For two years now, the 11-year-old student has been crossing into Colombia using the Simon Bolivar foot bridge for access to education as many teachers in her homeland have migrated or refuse to work for the little money the Venezuelan government can pay them since the country’s economic crisis began in 2015.

But this bridge, along with others, was blocked off last month for two weeks by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro after  Juan Guaido , the opposition leader and self-declared interim president, attempted to lead a US-backed aid caravan across the border.

Maduro, who has routinely denied that there is a humanitarian crisis in the country, maintains the aid is a ruse to remove him from power.

After days of protests by parents and children on the Venezuelan side of the border, a “humanitarian passage” was opened on Monday, allowing only schoolchildren and the critically ill to cross into Colombia using the formal border bridges.

This border closure led to an emergence of informal crossings, known locally as “trochas”, that are dangerous and controlled by armed groups from both countries charging people money to pass through them. Venezuelans need to cross into Colombia to buy basic items that are scarce in Venezuela, like food and medicine, or, in Cielo’s case, to get an education.

Even though the bridge is now open for certain groups, the Venezuelan National Guard does not let parents cross with their children, who must go alone. People are also not allowed to transport products from Colombia into Venezuela on the bridges.

“I still use the trochas, because my mum has a disability and I need to get food in Colombia,” Cielo said on Wednesday. “The soldiers don’t let you pass with anything, so I have to keep using the trochas to get it home.”

The young student, a biology and sports lover, said she did not like using the trochas, but more importantly for her, she did not want to miss school.

“Sometimes we have to run to get through [the trochas] because they close them off,” Cielo said, walking her way to the crossing through the bustling border town of Cucuta after school, dressed in her school uniform.

“It’s very dangerous. People say there are paramilitaries and guerrillas and sometimes there are confrontations”.

Heavy bags, smuggled goods and bribes

Upon arrival to the narrow and overcrowded trocha, Cielo weaved her small body through the masses of people frantically trying to return to Venezuela, hauling heavy bags and suitcases filled with supplies bought in Colombia.

People shout “make way” as they rush through with entire sacks of potatoes on their heads, while others get knocked down or to the side.

Venezuela children take risky trips to Colombia for school

Children as young as eight stand by the river, asking for money in exchange for helping people cross it with their bags. On the other side, Venezuelan armed groups collect money to allow people to continue to use the trocha.

One mother, Dayanera Diaz, 42, takes turns with her sister each day to walk their children to school from Venezuela to Colombia. She was doing the return journey will her son and nephew a week ago. She said she had to pay to pass through, but they did not charge the children.

“When the bridge is open they go to school by themselves, but now that it’s closed, it’s too dangerous,” said Diaz, who was also carrying rice and meat back with her.

Laidy Gomez, governor of the Tachira border region, deemed the measure of not letting Venezuelans pass through the border bridges with basic food and supplies for their families “inhumane”. On Tuesday, members of the opposition asked Michelle Bachelet, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, to visit the informal crossings.

Cielo attends the “mega school” on the border with about 2,500 other students. Nearly half – 1,200 – are Venezuelans or “returning” Colombians, who left during during Colombia’s five-decade-long armed conflict and have now come back since Venezuela’s economic downfall.

“It’s unbelievable that only five out of 1,200 children came to class the day after the closure, who used to pass by without problems,” said German Berbesi, the school’s headteacher. “For some, it was out of fear of the illegal armed groups, and for others, because the Venezuelan National Guard or the guerillas and paramilitary groups didn’t let them cross”.

Berbesi criticised the governments of the United States and Colombia, as well as Venezuela’s opposition, for disappearing after their “failed attempt” to get aid into Venezuela.

“Now the borders are closed and our children are left stranded, where is our president, our governors, our mayor? Where is [US] President [Donald] Trump’s help now?” he said.

The headteacher said attendance numbers have have gone down dramatically since the border closed and now there are about 850 of the 1,200 Venezuelans or “returning” Colombians attending. Before, most of these students would hardly miss a day as spots in the school are in high demand.

“In the trochas, the children are always at risk. Parents call to say they aren’t sending their child because they’re scared for them. What can I say? I can’t force them to send them in case something happens to them,” Berbesi said.

‘Huge’ human rights violation

One of the main reasons for the reopening of the bridge for children and the sick was because the river they had to cross has risen in recent days due to rainfall, making the trek even more difficult.

“I have a friend who’s missed two weeks and I know others who are coming up to three weeks,” said Cielo.

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) – a group devoted to protecting the rights of people affected by displacement  said some 4,000 boys and girls who cross the border every day to get an education in Colombia have not been able to continue with their classes because of the border closure.

“In spite of the situation, some children are walking through irregular crossings to reach schools, exposing themselves to the protection risks, including those associated with non-state armed groups that are part of the conflict in Colombia,” Christian Visnes, NRC Colombia country director, told Al Jazeera.

— Steven Grattan (@sjgrattan) March 7, 2019

Venezuela’s closure of the border has mainly affected its own people, according to Felipe Munoz, the Colombian government’s director of border issues.

“There are 3,218 Venezuelan children who are collected in Colombian buses every day and brought to school so they can study and eat and that is not able to happen now,” Munoz said, referring mainly to children who live in further away towns.

“This is a huge violation of the most basic human rights.”

Cielo said she would continue to make her daunting walk to school through the trochas for now, but hoped for change.

“The time I leave in the morning it’s really dark and feels dangerous. It’s all bushes and sometimes when I get there, they haven’t even opened the trochas yet,” the 11-year-old said.

“I’m getting used to it, but I hope things get back to normal soon.”

Inside Tesla’s Model Y unveiling event with Elon Musk

Well that was one hell of a party.

On Thursday night, Elon Musk unveiled the Tesla Model Y to a pumped-up crowd of Tesla fan boys, employees, investors, and media at the Tesla Design Studio in Hawthorne, CA.

“We’re literally bringing sexy back,” Musk said, after walking onto the stage to the opening bars of the ’90s hit “I’m Too Sexy.” Musk was alluding to the fact that his line of cars, the Models S, 3, X, and now Y, now intentionally spell out the word — you guessed it — “sexy.” Or, uh, S3XY.

Tesla bills its new model as an affordable crossover vehicle, that, as Musk said, “has the functionality of an SUV, rides like a sports car.” IRL, it kind of looks like the hatchback version of the Model 3; with cheeky curves and a big, bubbly behind, call it the Cardi B of Teslas.

While Tesla threw Thursday’s soiree to show off the Model Y, it was also a chance for Musk to channel his inner rock star and do a victory lap amongst fans, friends, and former haters, celebrating how far Tesla has come in just 14 years of existence.

“Twelve months from now we will have made about a million vehicles,” Musk said. “It’s pretty wild to think 11 years ago today we made literally one car. A year from now, 1 million.”

After a characteristically late entrance, Musk opened the event, appearing on the stage in an all black ‘fit, paired with custom black and red Tesla Nikes. The crowd of hundreds condensed even closer towards the stage as the club music died down and the red party lighting was replaced with a stage spotlight. The bartenders took a break.

Instead of just showing us the damn car, Musk proceeded to walk us through Tesla history, from the debut of the Tesla Roadster in 2008, to the construction of the Gigafactories across the globe, through 2018’s massive Model 3 production struggles (“2018 felt like aging 5 years at once”), and finally, to the present. That included rolling out each model — the Roadster, the S, 3, X, and even the Semi — into the event space and onto the stage (though the Semi had to stay in the back, poor guy. He’s just big boned!!)

The Tesla Semi rolled into the Model Y birthday party.

Musk delivered a Tesla history lesson not just to show off, but also to communicate his vision for the future: a fully sustainable energy system, complete with Tesla’s vehicles, solar panels, batteries (called Powerwall), and superchargers

“With solar and power and electric vehicles, we have a really bright future ahead,” Musk said. “It’s exciting”

From a business perspective, this is optimistic. After Model 3 production problems and scuffles with the SEC, Tesla just barely squeaked out profitable quarters in the back half of 2018. Tesla also still has to pay for its Shanghai factory, and undertake new production challenges with the Model Y. So Tesla’s financial future might not be so immediately bright, but you got the sense that Musk was talking about the big picture future of energy.

Elon Musk showcased the fact that his electric vehicles had led to 4 million tons of CO2 saved.

He also took the chance to acknowledge the sea change Tesla has inspired in the industry as a whole with regard to electric vehicles — with a healthy dose of f*** the haters. He rhapsodized about how, in 2009, the media and the auto industry called Tesla and the concept of electric vehicles all sorts of mean names. But how now, every stratosphere of the car industry is betting on electric. This, Musk said, was his ultimate goal: to not just sell an electric car, but to make electric the standard of the industry.

“This was the goal all along,” Musk said.

Finally, Musk brought out the Model Y as spotlights flashed and the crowd roared. Musk paced the stage with a grin as everybody strained to get a look at the new car.

“Of any midsize SUV, I think it’ll be the one you want,” Musk said. He was one proud papa.

In addition to checking out the Model Y, Thursday night showed that a Tesla event is a truly weird ass spectacle. The crowd has a lot do with that.

I learned at a past event that Tesla offers event spots to its true fans, car owners, and community members. That means that the Musk fan community — so active online — actually materializes IRL, wearing Tesla jackets and screaming “WE LOVE YOU” at Musk from the stage.

Tesla employees also attend, and could be seen celebrating the debut as they raucously cheersed their beers amongst the crowd. Then there are the investors and the bankers, well-coiffed women and fleece vest-wearing men, taking it all in, hopefully pleased with the money they’ve given to Musk. And finally there’s the media, and the bloggeratti, fastidiously documenting every moment of the event with cheery narrations into their cameras, as they speak for an audience none of us can see.

When they all collide it’s, uh, really something. As Casey Neistat finagled his way into a Tesla Model Y test ride, a Tesla fan yelled at the notorious blogger, asking, again and again, “DO YOU EVEN DRIVE A TESLA, CASEY? DO YOU??” She was apparently miffed that the public figure was getting a ride in the new whip before her, a true fan.

Oh yeah, there was a test ride. It was… really fast! In both senses of the word.

Tesla offered rides in the Model Y to press and investors, as well as fans, if they were lucky enough to get their numbers called. Musk touted the car can go 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds at the event. And humble-bragged about its 300-mile range. We didn’t quite make it that far: the rides lasted about a minute, traveling through a parking lot and then about the length of a block. The drivers also showcased the electric motor’s capabilities as they accelerated down the block, calling out the specs of the ride.

The Model Y is based off of the design of the Model 3, so it has a similar interior: a huge sun roof, spanning nearly the length of a car, a horizontal touch screen, and five seats for us to squeeze into. My biggest take away, as I sat in the back middle seat surrounded by large men, was that the vegan leather material was soft and buttery.

And then it was over. Fans continued to wait for rides and mill about. The pie, that Musk had promised on Twitter in celebration of Pi Day (March 14), materialized; the bar re-opened. A middle-aged couple decked out in Tesla gear sat on the ground, like worn-out festival-goers resting their feet, but not yet ready to call it a night. A young man schemed about his plans to get a job with Tesla just as soon as he finished college.

Musk is going through a lot of shit right now. He has a pending contempt charge from the SEC for violating his settlement for his “take private” tweet and several whistleblower cases paint him as a vindictive, overly controlling boss. But seeing him at his home base, surrounded by fans, actually gave an endearing glow to his more usually contemptible swagger. Musk as a public figure — with his Twitter stunts and red carpet appearances and wild predictions — is larger than life. But in person, he seems genuinely proud, and happy, and even sort of humbled by, his work, and his community.

Elon Musk seemed to be genuinely enjoying himself at the Model Y unveiling.

So maybe, this one time, we’ll forgive him the S3XY puns. It doesn’t hurt that the Model Y is pretty dang cute, too.

Julián Castro’s plan to torpedo Beto backfires

Julián Castro

Compared to other presidential contenders who have rolled out lengthy endorsement lists, Julián Castro’s roster is a little thin. | Mario Tama/Getty Images

2020 elections

An attempted show of force by the former HUD secretary’s campaign wasn’t very forceful.

Julián Castro welcomed home-state colleague Beto O’Rourke into the crowded Democratic presidential primary field Thursday by releasing a list of more than two dozen elected and appointed Texas officials endorsing the former San Antonio mayor over the ex-El Paso congressman.

The attempted show of force on O’Rourke’s launch day, however, may have fallen a little flat.

Story Continued Below

The timing of Castro’s brushback pitch was viewed by some Democrats as unsportsmanlike. To make matters worse, some of the endorsers were surprised to learn that their names would be released on the day a fellow Texan announced his candidacy. And at least one official on the list said he was actually neutral in the 2020 race.

“That list is not ready for primetime,” said Colin Strother, a Texas Democratic strategist who once advised Castro, asserting that it was a “petty” move by an ordinarily classy candidate. “I think [the timing] was in poor taste, and I think it sets it up as though they want this to be some kind of contest between him and Beto and who’s stronger in Texas and, you know, one person put out a list with 33 names on it and the other person came within 3 points of unseating Ted Cruz.”

“If it was an effort to rain on Beto’s parade,” he said, “it was ill conceived.”

Several officials among the 30 listed said they were given no heads up that the campaign would release their endorsements on the same day O’Rourke would launch his White House bid.

“I didn’t know that. I don’t know necessarily that I’d say it caught me off guard,” state Rep. Terry Meza said. “It’s just interesting timing, isn’t it? But that may be part of his strategy. It wasn’t any part of my strategy in endorsing him.”

’Meza added that she’s also supportive of O’Rourke’s candidacy and noted that she had endorsed Castro when she was hopeful the former congressman would challenge Republican John Cornyn for his Senate seat in 2020.

“It’s not an anti-Beto thing,” Meza said. “It’s a pro-Julián endorsement.”

O’Rourke’s campaign declined to comment for this story.

The Castro campaign insisted the timing of the endorsement release was merely coincidental. It maintained that officials on the list weren’t given advance notice because it wasn’t finalized until late Wednesday, and they shouldn’t have been surprised since they knew its release was imminent.

“The notion that we were just keeping this in our back pocket for weeks waiting for Beto to announce is just not true,” a Castro spokesperson said. “It wasn’t supposed to coincide exactly with Beto’s announcement, but it did.”

Castro’s endorsement list was weeks in the making. The former Obama-era Housing and Urban Development secretary held a breakfast last month with state and local Democratic officials at the Austin Club in Austin, Texas, where he discussed his candidacy and asked Democrats for their support, according to a state lawmaker who was present.

State Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr., who was surprised the list of endorsements was rolled out on O’Rourke’s announcement day, said he was approached about supporting Castro by state Rep. Richard Peña Raymond last week.

“I was asked to consider him, and I said, ‘Yeah, I certainly want a Texas candidate,’ and he was the only one that had announced at the time and so I offered my name,” said Lucio, who told POLITICO he will remain neutral in the Democratic primary.

Compared to other presidential contenders who have rolled out lengthy endorsement lists, Castro’s roster was a little thin. While Sen. Cory Booker recently announced endorsements from virtually every powerful Democratic elected official and leader in New Jersey — and Sen. Kamala Harris revealed support from Gov. Gavin Newsom and a broad roster of statewide officials and state legislators — Castro’s list was fairly modest in size and scope for such a big state.

“The fact is that list should be three or four times that long,” Strother said of Castro’s endorsements. “There should be mayors and county judges and sheriffs and Democratic county chairs from all over the state. There should be a few hundred people on that list. He’s been in effect the only Texan in the race for four months.”

“It’s a pretty weak list: 33-some-odd Texans, most of whom no one has ever heard of outside their little area of town or the state,” he said. “Not sure how that really exudes strength.”

For its part, the Castro campaign signaled that Thursday’s list was merely the first wave of prominent supporters it will reveal.

“We were definitely trying to get the notion out there that he has support across the state and that he is locking down a lot of that support now,” a spokesperson said. “But this is only the first tranche of endorsements we’ll get from Texas. There’s definitely gonna be more in the coming weeks.”

The trans meme community on Reddit is about so much more than jokes

There are dozens of subreddits for the trans community on Reddit, each designed to meet a certain psychological need.

There’s r/asktransgender, dedicated to people’s questions about the community, r/transgender, a subreddit for trans news, and r/transtimelines, where people can document their transitions. These are large and vibrant groups, with followers in the tens of thousands.

But for some folks who are just coming out as trans, memes and GIFs — not traditional, location-based support groups or advice-based subreddits — are where they first find community.

Take r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns, Reddit’s oldest active subreddit for trans-centered shitposts, memes, and GIFs.  Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns currently has over 84,300 “shitposters,” many of whom post meaningful content about transphobia or transitioning, then disguise it in shitpost robes or meme make-up.

Over at r/GaySoundsShitposts, another trans-focused meme subreddit, you’ll find even more introspective, cutting memes, combined with people’s earnest observations about trans life. Meanwhile, r/TransQualityGifs shares narrative-driven GIFs about the trans community.

Each of these subreddits has a slightly different tone and their own rules for moderation. What they all share in common is a sense of community-building: The mods know that, given the growth in trans visibility, their subreddits now serve more than just memes.

Corinne, one of the moderators for the Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns subreddit, described it this way in a phone interview with Mashable:

“When I started, it was a lot more edgy memes. Now it’s more like a place where people can leave events, support others, and comfort others while seeking humor. We didn’t realize the user base had changed so much. It was just a couple thousand people just making crass jokes. But really, by Christmas last year, it had became something more than that.”

As the trans community becomes more public, so do the meme groups

Despite the Trump administration’s push to make life significantly harder for trans people, whether by banning them from the military or eliminating their protections in schools, the trans community has only grown more visible in recent years. Caitlyn Jenner has moved partially out of the picture, allowing other trans leaders to move into the spotlight, and more teens identify as trans or gender non-conforming than ever before

With the spike in public awareness came a growth in trans meme-centered subreddits. Just look at how much Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns, which started in 2012, has expanded recently. In just a little over a year, the subreddit has experienced a nearly 200 percent increase in subscribers.

R/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns now has over 84,300 subscribers

R/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns now has over 84,300 subscribers

Image: courtesty of reddit

“I think a lot of it has to do with increasing acceptability,” Corinne says. “Of course during this presidential administration we’ve regressed a lot in terms of human rights. But in terms of social consciousness, people are more aware of what being trans is. People want to know what options there are for people who experience gender dysphoria or who are not their assigned gender at birth. It’s really hard to be able to explore those things alone … We’ve noticed we’ve gotten more and more younger users. They are feeling more open in their lives to come out — at least come out online. So a lot of trans people turn to [us].”

GaySoundsShitposts is a much younger subreddit, having formed a little over a year ago after a controversy developed on Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns. At the time, Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns had decided to eliminate any posts that weren’t strictly memes and were more supportive/advice-seeking. (The subreddit has since relaxed their policy.) Some users migrated to GaySoundsShitposts, which was meme-focused but open to all forms of trans-centered content. Since then, it has grown to over 14,500 subscribers or “hatched eggs.”

“When I volunteered to be a moderator, r/GaySoundsShitposts had about 500 subscribers,” Evangeline Rose Ingram, one of the founding moderators of the subreddit and also a moderator for r/TransQualityGIFs, told Mashable in an email. “In the course of the month of December, that shot up to over five thousand … R/GSSP is now at over 14,000 subscribers from its humble beginnings a year ago, and we see about 30,000 unique viewers per month.”

Neither Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns nor GaySoundsShitposts were able to support all the original content. Shortly after GaySoundsShitposts was founded, Reddit users six_inches_light and FoodOnion (who asked to be called only by their usernames) founded r/TransQualityGifs, dedicated to longer, more narrative-based content, all in the form of GIFs.

If TransQualityGifs sounds familiar, it’s probably because you’ve heard of r/HighQualityGifs, its close relative. Part of the reason Six_Inches_light and FoodOnion founded TransQualityGifs, the founders told Mashable, was because HighQualityGifs wasn’t particularly trans-friendly.

“What we wanted to encourage from the start was more trans GIFers to come out of their shell,” FoodOnion told Mashable in a phone interview. “I like to do GIFs because it makes people feel represented in a more meaningful way … With GIFs you can actually tell stories [as compared to a picture].”

The subreddit currently enjoys over 3,100 trans’scribers and counting — no small feat, given that the subreddit is fairly new and that GIFs are far more labor-intensive than memes.

Self-exploration begins with memes

Moderator of GaySoundsShitposts Val K. isn’t surprised to find so many trans folks who have either just come out or are thinking of coming out on the sub.

“After a person initially comes out, they often don’t know anyone else who is trans,” Val told Mashable in a phone interview. “If they’re early to transition or they’re quite late in life they probably wont’ know anyone. Trans Reddit provides a place for people to go, ‘Oh, it’s not just me. There are lots of other people like this.’”

Val believes that meme-focused subreddits might be particularly appealing to those who are newly out and not ready for more explicit conversations about gender identity:

“[Meme subreddits] can be good for people who aren’t typically ready to talk to other people but need to get this out in some way … People can talk about really heavy stuff and then use a custom emoji. That’s kind of a way for someone to have emotional distance from the things they’re going through.”

Evangeline Rose Ingram, Val’s fellow moderator, agrees:

“More than anywhere else on Reddit, r/GSSP is a home to me. We’re all a bunch of dorks and we don’t always get along perfectly, but it matters a lot to know that there are other trans people like me out there just living their lives one day at a time. For some of us, /r/GSSP is the only place we feel at home.”

The content on all three subreddits reflects this safe, protected, community-driven environment. There are hundreds of posts that explore gender dysphoria, coming out to your family and anxiety about transitioning. There are posts about passing and self-harm. Sometimes the material is deeply serious and hidden in Simpsons GIFs or anime memes. Other times, the memes are just “in jokes” — material that, unless you’re trans, you’ll never fully understand. Which is just how it should be.

It’s a satirical and humane digital subcultural. Who cares if not all people get it?

Here, for example, is a selection from a multi-part GIF series shared on TransQualityGIFs about being trans in church:

So many of the posts are profoundly, darkly comical.

“Trans people are often some of the most marginalized people in society,” Corinne says.  “So they develop thick skin, which translates into humor. Because a lot of trans people’s experiences are pretty dark and pretty sad, there has got to be some way to keep the hope up [and this is one].”

These subreddits can only do so much

For all their inclusivity, the subreddits have limits. As a moderator for GaySoundsShitposts, Ingram works hard to ensure that the sub’s subscribers have room for self-exploration (be it in meme form or the occasional advice-based post) while acknowledging the sub’s limitations.

Ingram explained that at the beginning, “[W]e were fielding about one major depressive crisis for day. We ultimately had to say, ‘We’re not trained for this, please call a crisis line,’ simply because everyone was burning out from intense stress — but we’ve been shaped by that. We know that, by banning someone, we could be cutting their only lifeline.”

These subreddits provide community. But every community has their boundaries.

TransQualityGIFs, GaySoundsShitposts, and traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns provide a critical home base for trans Redditors who love memes and GIFs. And as happy as Val K. is to provide that space for users, Val wants folks to travel beyond large, meme-based subreddits.

One sub can’t do it all.

“Our hope [for our subreddit] is that it doesn’t grow too much,” Val says. “People need to move on from it emotionally and … [build] better support networks … that are more close-knit. A community of 50 or so active people is typically what we want to get people into. A smaller community — whether’s it’s on Reddit or elsewhere — has the advantage of intimacy and personalization. GaySoundsShitposts can affirm your gender identity, but it likely can’t tell you where to find the most trans-friendly doctor in your neighborhood. You can identify powerfully and emotionally with a GIF in TransQualityGIFs, but the GIF can’t come out to your parents. Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns can validate your feelings about passing, but it can’t always assist you in locating hormone replacement therapy.

These subreddits are critical. They’re meaningful, affirming, communities that go beyond their stated function. It’s just important to have reasonable expectations.

The memes are the start.

US, Canada, EU hit Russia with fresh sanctions over Ukraine

The United States, in coordination with Canada and the European Union, has slapped new sanctions on more than a dozen Russian officials and businesses, citing Moscow’s “continued aggression in Ukraine”.

Six Russian officials, six defence firms and two energy and construction firms were targeted, either over the seizure of Ukrainian vessels in the Kerch Strait, or for their activities in Russian-annexed Crimea or separatist eastern Ukraine, the US Treasury said in a statement on Friday.

“The United States and our transatlantic partners will not allow Russia’s continued aggression against Ukraine to go unchecked,” said Steve Mnuchin, the US treasury secretary.

“This joint initiative with our partners in the European Union and Canada reinforces our shared commitment to impose targeted and meaningful sanctions in response to the Kremlin’s attempts to disregard international norms and undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he added.

The US sanctions freeze all property and interests in property belonging to the designated individuals and entities, and prohibits US persons from transacting with them.

Four of the individuals are border guard or coastguard officials, singled out for their role in a November 25, 2018, naval confrontation, in which Russian ships fired on and seized three Ukrainian vessels in the narrow Kerch Strait linking the Black and Azov seas near Crimea.

The Russian navy captured 24 Ukrainian sailors during the clash.

Canada imposed sanctions on 114 people and 15 entities in response to Russia’s military action against the Ukrainian ships, while the EU sanctioned eight more Russians over the standoff.

The decision takes the number of people blacklisted by the bloc over the crisis in Ukraine to 170 persons and 44 entities.

The EU said its sanctions affected senior security service officials and military commanders accused of preventing Ukrainian ships from reaching port.

Attack on Ukrainian ships

The US, Canada and the EU on Friday again pressed for Moscow to release the detained Ukrainian crew.

“Canada and its allies are unwavering in our support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Russia’s provocations in the Kerch Strait and its illegal invasion and ongoing occupation of Crimea will not go unchecked,” said Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s foreign minister.

Robert Palladino, a spokesman for the US State Department, called on Russia to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He added: “We call upon Russia to immediately return to Ukraine the seized vessels and arrested crew members, and keep the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov open to ships transiting to and from Ukrainian ports.”

The US also imposed sanctions on two Ukrainian separatists – Aleksey Naydenko and Vladimir Vysotsky – involved in organising November elections in the breakaway east, which Washington says were a “sham”.

The six defence firms were targeted over their operations in Crimea, where the US says several “misappropriated Ukrainian state assets to provide services to the Russian military”.

Among them are Russian shipbuilding giant Zelenodolsk, the hydroacoustic equipment producer Okeanpribor, a diesel engine supplier to the Russian military, Zvezda, and an electronic parts supplier to the military, Fiolent.

‘Political scheming’

Separately on Friday, Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska sued the US alleging that it had overstepped its legal bounds in imposing sanctions on his companies.

The billionaire was slapped with sanctions in April last year, which targeted tycoons with close ties to the Kremlin.

In a legal filing, Deripaska asked the US District Court in Washington to block the US Treasury Department from using the “devastating power” of such economic sanctions. He claimed his net worth has dropped by $7.5bn because of the measures.

“I have spent 30 years of my life building companies that are major players in the global economy, and will not let that hard work – along with millions of jobs and individual livelihoods – be destroyed by political scheming,” he said in the statement sent by his spokeswoman.

In a huge reversal, Disney is welcoming James Gunn back to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. He has been rehired to direct the third movie after he was fired in July last year.

The move was apparently decided on months ago. Disney Studios president Alan Horn was persuaded by Gunn’s public apology and his handling of the situation and decided to reverse course to reinstate him, according to Deadline. Mashable has confirmed the report.

Gunn also confirmed the news on Twitter with an emotional statement.

He was ousted when some of his old tweets related to pedophilia jokes were rediscovered by conservative personalities. The director tweeted in response and owned up to his mistakes.

After Gunn’s dismissal, the entire cast voiced their support for him in an open letter, including Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, and Zoe Saldana, with Bautista threatening to leave the film altogether. Marvel never really made moves to hire another director as replacement and confirmed they would use Gunn’s script, which he had already written prior to being fired.

Gunn has already signed on to direct the Suicide Squad sequel for DC and Warner Bros, so Marvel won’t start production on GOTG 3 until he wraps that up. The horror film he produced, Brightburn, releases on May 24.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 apparently serves as an epic conclusion to the story that began with the first part in 2014. We don’t know yet how that will pan out, seeing as half the team turned to ash in Avengers: Infinity War, but Gunn’s rehiring is sure to increase the hype even more.
