Biden’s 2020 announcement that wasn’t

For an instant, Joe Biden was running.

A verbal slip by the former vice president brought a crowd of Democrats in his home state of Delaware to their feet on Saturday, encapsulating the feverish speculation that he intends to make a play for the White House in 2020.

Story Continued Below

“I know I get criticized. I’m told I get criticized by the new left,” Biden said during his keynote remarks at the First State Democratic Dinner in Dover. “I have the most progressive record of anybody running for the — anybody who would run.”

But before Biden could finish his thought, a chorus of cheers had broken out in the ballroom of the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino, with attendees rising from their tables to cheer the former Delaware senator.

“I didn’t mean,” Biden said, raising his hands to quell the audience. He chuckled, looked down at the lectern, and made the sign of the cross on his chest.

“Of anybody who would run,” Biden concluded.

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) said to reporters earlier in the evening that Biden has told him that “he is all but certain he is going to run.” And addressing the dinner ahead of Biden’s remarks, Coons said he is “confident that 598 days from now, we will together be celebrating” a new commander in chief.

“Folks, I am praying for that man. And I am excited to hear from him just a few minutes from now,” Coons said. “And I am confident that’s our vice president, Joe Biden.”

Russell Wilson: ‘Great Potential’ Next Contract Is Biggest in NFL History

ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JANUARY 05: Russell Wilson #3 of the Seattle Seahawks looks for an open receiver against the Dallas Cowboys during the Wild Card Round at AT&T Stadium on January 05, 2019 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Tom Pennington/Getty Images)

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show (h/t Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk) Friday that there’s “great potential” his next contract is the biggest in NFL history.

Wilson, 30, has one year left on his current deal.

Franchise quarterbacks routinely pass a baton that represents the owner of the NFL’s richest contract. During the 2018 offseason, Matt Stafford of the Detroit Lions, Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers, Kirk Cousins of the Minnesota Vikings and Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons were each signed to the NFL’s biggest deal at one point.

Green Bay Packers signal-caller Aaron Rodgers is the current leader in the clubhouse thanks to a four-year, $134 million extension signed in Aug. 2018. However, Wilson’s invaluable importance to the Hawks (coupled with inflation) could enable him to surpass Rodgers’ salary.

The five-time Pro Bowler has earned a 75-36-1 lifetime record for the Hawks, who have never had a losing season under Wilson’s command. The seven-year veteran has completed 64.2 percent of his lifetime passes, tossing 196 touchdowns and 63 interceptions. The Super Bowl XLVIII winner also rushed for 3,651 yards and 16 touchdowns for his career.

Wilson told Fallon that he believes he has “10-15 years left,” so as Smith noted, a few long-term deals could be on the horizon for the ex-Wisconsin and North Carolina State star.

NCAA Tournament 2019: Examining the Hottest Teams Heading into Selection Sunday

Daniel R. Patmore/Associated Press

Colgate Raiders

With their win over Bucknell in the Patriot League championship, the Raiders earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Colgate finished the season 24-10—the best in program history. They have to be feeling good heading into the NCAA tournament, where they track as a potential No. 15 seed.

However, we’ll see if the Raiders can keep the good vibes going. Matt Langel’s squad didn’t play any ranked teams, though the Raiders did play Syracuse (and lost 77-56).

Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs

The Runnin’ Bulldogs have to be feeling great about themselves, as their victory over Radford in the Big South tournament earns them an automatic bid to their first NCAA tournament appearance. And their wins have been decisive. Radford was the reigning Big South champion, and in the conference semifinals, Gardner-Webb toppled top-seeded Campbell in enemy territory.

As a first-time entrant in the Big Dance and a likely No. 16 seed, the Runnin’ Bulldogs may not make much noise past the first round.

Iona Gaels

The Gaels never sniffed a ranking this season, but no matter: Iona still showed what it could do in the MAAC with a 12-6 conference record. The Gaels bring a 10-game win streak into the Big Dance and are riding high following their 81-60 victory over Monmouth for their fourth straight MAAC title. On Selection Sunday, the Gaels figure to earn a No. 16 seed as they prepare for their fourth consecutive NCAA tourney appearance under coach Tim Cluess.

Murray State Racers

The Racers, cream of the Ohio Valley Conference, earned the first automatic bid this year by topping Belmont 77-65 in the conference title game. NBA fans who are hoping their team might draft Racers star sophomore guard Ja Morant this spring can watch the potential top-five pick in the tourney, and because of his talent, the Racers have first-round Cinderella power. Murray State projects as a No. 12 seed.

Will conference rival Belmont make it in as an at-large team?

Northeastern Huskies

The Huskies took care of business in the CAA title game against Hofstra, picking up an automatic bid with an 82-74 victory. Coach Bill Coen ran a tight ship in the season’s second half, with the Huskies winning their last seven and 12 of their last 13. Guard Vasa Pusica leads the team in points (17.8), assists (4.2) and steals per game and looks to lead his squad into March as a likely No. 13 seed.

Northern Kentucky Norse

The Horizon League champion Norse knocked off top-seeded Wright State 77-66 in the conference title game, punching their ticket to their second NCAA tournament in three seasons. The Norse have a collection of high scorers in sophomore guard Jalen Tate (14.0 ppg), junior guard Tyler Sharpe (14.1 ppg) and senior forward Drew McDonald (19.1 ppg), but they haven’t faced strong competition. Projecting as a No. 14 seed in the NCAA tournament, this squad will likely play a No. 3 seed.

Saint Mary’s Gaels

The Gaels don’t quite fit the criteria on the intro slide, but you’ll have to forgive us for the exception. Saint Mary’s drew No. 1 Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference title game Tuesday, and to say that the Gaels’ chances of earning an automatic bid seemed low would be an understatement.

Saint Mary’s had fallen to the Zags in two previous meetings—a 94-46 drubbing in early February and a 69-55 March 2 decision. But Saint Mary’s was unstoppable in the WCC title game, outshooting Gonzaga 45.1 percent to 37.5 percent from the field. It was the first time in program history the Gaels toppled a Top Five team, let alone a No. 1. Now, the Gaels are riding high into Selection Sunday, while the Bulldogs lick their wounds—left to wonder if a No. 1 seed is still in play.

Mass rally in Madrid against trial of Catalan separatist leaders

The protesters, many of whom made the journey from Catalonia, waved Catalan flags [Juan Medina/Reuters]

A huge crowd of demonstrators has rallied in Spain’s capital, Madrid, in a major show of support for 12 Catalan politicians and activists standing trial for their role in organising a failed independence bid in 2017.

Amid heavy police presence, nearly 400 buses on Saturday carried people from across the northeastern region of Catalonia to attend the gathering, the first major separatist march held in Madrid.

In unusual scenes for the capital, the central Paseo del Prado boulevard was steeped in red, yellow and blue, the colours of the Estelada flag of the Catalan independence movement.

“I think it’s a fair judgement to say you’ve never heard the voice of Catalan independence spoken so loudly and with so many numbers here in Madrid,” Al Jazeera’s David Chater, reporting from the demonstration, said.

“There are two phrases that have been prominent here: that democracy is about taking decision and that self-determination is a right a not a crime.”

Protest organisers put the turnout at 120,000 while police gave a figure of 18,000, according to Reuters news agency.

Rebellion charges

The defendants face decades in prison on rebellion and other charges for staging a banned referendum in October 2017 and declaring Catalan independence, although they took no action to implement that.

They went on trial at Spain’s Supreme Court in mid-February. Many of their supporters believe the defendants are “political prisoners”.

According to court filings, the defendants’ lawyers intend to claim that the Catalan separatists are being prosecuted for their Catalan nationalist political beliefs and the act of voting.

Most of the politicians standing trial come from two political parties: the Catalan Republican Left (ERC) and the centrist Catalan European Democratic Party (PDeCAT).

Leaders of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and Omnium Cultural (OC) – two pro-independence civil society organisations – also stand trial.

The 2017 vote registered a majority of Catalans voting in favour of independence but many people had boycotted the plebiscite, which Spain’s Supreme Court had labelled illegal.

Lakers News: Brandon Ingram Undergoes Successful Surgery on Shoulder Blood Clot

Marcio Jose Sanchez/Associated Press

The Los Angeles Lakers announced small forward Brandon Ingram had successful thoracic outlet decompression surgery on his right arm Saturday.

Ingram, who was diagnosed with deep venous thrombosis (DVT) on March 8, will miss the rest of the 2018-19 NBA campaign but is “expected to make a full recovery” before next season.

The 21-year-old Duke product averaged a career-best 18.3 points to go with 5.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists across 52 appearances for the Lakers this season. His shooting percentage (49.7) also set a career high.

As a whole, Los Angeles failed to live up to expectations following the arrival of superstar free agent LeBron James, though. The front office has started looking toward the future, with point guard Lonzo Ball also shut down because of a lingering ankle injury, per Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic.

Lakers power forward Kyle Kuzma told Kyle Goon of the Southern California News Group he was disappointed for Ingram after the DVT diagnosis:

“I was real sad. It hits home for me because I know how much Brandon works, I know how bad he wants to be great, I know much he loves the game of basketball. He never sits out at practice, he’s always in the gym. He can’t do nothing for at least, I don’t know how long they said, to be on blood thinners and not do anything—I couldn’t imagine what it’s like so I feel for him every day.”

L.A. will likely attempt to become a major player in the free-agent market once again this summer, so it’s unclear what type of role Ingram and Ball may be expected to fill next season, assuming they aren’t traded.

The Lakers didn’t provide a firm timetable for Ingram’s recovery beyond the expectation he’ll be ready when the 2019-20 campaign opens.

Gordon Hayward Won’t Return vs. Hawks After Neck Injury Diagnosed as Strain

Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward (20) dribbles the ball during the second half of an NBA basketball game in Boston, Monday, Jan. 28, 2019. The Celtics won 112-104. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

Charles Krupa/Associated Press

Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward has been ruled out for the remainder of Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Hawks because of a neck strain.

Hayward left the game late in the first quarter after running into a screen set by Hawks forward John Collins:

Celtics on NBC Sports Boston @NBCSCeltics

Hayward is OUT for the rest of the game vs the Hawks (strained neck) due to this play (@AAANe_MAnews) #AAANortheast https://t.co/BbNEXXUjn0

He exited after logging only one minute in the contest.

After missing almost the entirety of last season because of a fractured left tibia and dislocated ankle suffered in the season opener, Hayward has managed to maintain relatively good health throughout the 2018-19 campaign. He has appeared in 64 of his team’s first 70 games. He has missed three games at various points because of ankle issues.

The 28-year-old entered Saturday’s game averaging 11.0 points on 44.8 percent shooting, 4.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

It took some time for Hayward to show signs of returning to form when he returned to the court following last season’s gruesome leg injury—especially since he has been asked to come off the bench for the first time since 2011-12. However, he has seemed to come into his role of late, averaging 12.6 points over his last 13 appearances.

It was just 11 days ago that he recorded a season-high 30 points in a 128-95 victory over the two-time defending champs:

He followed that outburst up by hitting the game-winning shot to beat the Sacramento Kings in the following game.

The Celtics proved last season that they can make a deep playoff run without Hayward (and Kyrie Irving), as they came within one game of the 2018 NBA Finals despite having a pair of All-Stars sidelined. However, this season’s Eastern Conference field appears to have more depth than recent years.

Boston (42-27) currently sits in fifth place in the East, two games back of both the Philadelphia 76ers and the Indiana Pacers for the Nos. 3 and 4 seeds. While having home-court advantage in the first round could help make a path to the Finals easier, the Celtics need to prioritize Hayward’s health down the stretch.

Trump says he told House GOP to ‘play along’ on Mueller report vote

President Donald Trump arrives for the State of the Union address.

“I told leadership to let all Republicans vote for transparency,” President Donald Trump wrote online. | Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images

President Donald Trump on Saturday said he encouraged House Republicans to vote in favor of a resolution calling on the Justice Department to make Robert Mueller’s final report public — despite tweeting a day earlier that the special counsel “should never have been appointed” and that “there should be no Mueller Report.”

The House on Thursday overwhelmingly approved in a 420-0 vote the measure urging Attorney General William Barr to release the entirety of Mueller’s findings and make them available to Congress. The resolution was blocked by Republicans in the Senate.

Story Continued Below

“On the recent non-binding vote (420-0) in Congress about releasing the Mueller Report, I told leadership to let all Republicans vote for transparency,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Makes us all look good and doesn’t matter. Play along with the game!”

The president last month said he was unsure whether he would be opposed to releasing Mueller’s report, and that he would defer to the attorney general’s judgment. But Trump took a harder line on Friday, dismissing the special counsel’s work as “an illegal & conflicted investigation in search of a crime.”

“[T]he Special Counsel … should never have been appointed and there should be no Mueller Report,” he tweeted, adding: “THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN TO A PRESIDENT AGAIN!”

During his Senate confirmation hearings in January, Barr did not commit to making Mueller’s report public but pledged to release as much of the special counsel’s findings as possible. Barr has also been attacked by Democrats for a memorandum he wrote to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein last year criticizing Mueller’s investigation.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) has threatened to issue a subpoena for the Mueller report if Barr does not release it to Congress and the public, and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) has said he is prepared to call the special counsel to testify before lawmakers.
