Clayton Kershaw’s Shoulder Injury to Keep Him Out of Dodgers’ Opening Day Lineup

The Los Angeles Dodgers will have a different pitcher than Clayton Kershaw starting on Opening Day for the first time since 2010.

According to ESPN.com, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the shoulder inflammation the southpaw has dealt with during spring training will prevent him from toeing the rubber March 28 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“When he’s ready to pitch for us is when he’ll pitch for us,” Roberts said of Kershaw, who hasn’t pitched a spring training game this year but completed a bullpen session without issue Sunday.

This is just the latest injury concern for the ace after he spent time on the injured list with biceps tendonitis in his pitching arm during the 2018 campaign. He also missed additional time with a lower back strain, which raised red flags considering he had back issues in 2017 as well.

When healthy, Kershaw is one of the best pitchers in baseball with a laundry list of accomplishments on his resume. He is a three-time National League Cy Young winner, seven-time All-Star, the 2014 NL MVP, a Gold Glove winner and a five-time ERA leader.

While it is not reasonable to expect other pitchers to replicate what Kershaw brings to the table when he is at his best, Los Angeles does have other arms it can turn to while the ace is sidelined.

Walker Buehler can carry the rotation, while Hyun-Jin Ryu, Rich Hill, Ross Stripling and Kenta Maeda provide depth.

Can Boeing weather the 737 Max storm?

It could take months to determine exactly why a Boeing 737 Max 8 jet crashed minutes after take-off from Addis Ababa on March 10, killing all 157 people on board. But the safety concerns raised by the second deadly crash in five months involving the model have unleashed a storm around Boeing and its most popular plane.

Pressure on the company intensified on Monday after France’s BEA air accident authority said it found “clear similarities” between flight data recovered from the Ethiopian crash and an October crash of a 737 Max in Indonesia that killed all 189 people on board.

Also on Monday, Canada’s transport minister told reporters Transport Canada is reexamining the validation it gave to the 737 Max.

That decision followed a pair of newspaper reports over the weekend that cast doubt over the certification process for the 737 Max.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that federal prosecutors and US Department of Transportation officials are scrutinising the development of the 737 Max. And a separate Seattle Times investigation revealed that federal regulators had delegated wide responsibility for assessing the plane’s safety to Boeing and the company, in turn, had delivered an analysis with crucial flaws.

Last week, aviation officials around the world grounded the 737 Max until further notice.

Having a major product designated a global pariah in its class – even temporarily – would be a crippling blow to many firms. And the longer questions circulate around the safety the 737 Max, the more uncertainty it creates for Boeing.

But the company enjoys a market position that makes it highly resilient.

Boeing is the world’s largest aerospace company and the US’ biggest manufacturing exporter with revenues topping $100bn in 2018. It’s also part of a duopoly along with  Airbus, which together control nearly the entire global market for large aircraft manufacturing.

Combine that duopoly power with booming international demand for air travel and Boeing’s potential to weather the storm engulfing the 737 Max becomes clearer.

“It’s a duopoly with very high barriers to entry,” Richard Aboulafia, vice president of analysis at Teal Group, told Al Jazeera. “It’s an enormous market with huge existing revenue streams.”

Surging demand

Demand for international air travel is climbing rapidly, with passenger numbers expected to more than double from around four billion in 2018 to 8.2 billion in 2037, according to the International Air Transport Association.

That surge in demand represents a huge opportunity for aircraft makers.

In the category of “next-generation” single-aisle planes, Airbus offers the A320neo, while Boeing has its 737 Max.

The big selling point of both is that they are reengineered updates of popular, pre-existing product lines and boast greater fuel efficiency. That combination can save airlines a great deal of money, and indeed, next-generation single-aisles are in tremendous demand.

The Boeing 737 Max is the fastest-selling aircraft in the company’s history with roughly 370 delivered so far and some 4,700 more on order.

Some airlines have said they are reevaluating existing orders of the 737 Max in the wake of the deadly crashes.

All 157 people on board an Ethiopian Airlines flight died on March 10 when the Boeing 737 Max plane crashed shortly after take-off from Addis Ababa [Jemal Countess/Getty]

But moving that business to Airbus would not necessarily be painless for airlines, because planes are ordered years in advance.

“They can back someone else’s line and in the meantime burn lots more fuel and spend lots more money than they had to,” said Aboulafia.

If orders are affected, it could show up in key US economic data because Boeing is an important component of orders for US durable goods that are designed to last three years or more.

“If airlines will hold off on ordering Boeing jets – or buy Airbus jets – that could show up in figures for a few months,” Michael Pearce, senior economist at Capital Economics, told Al Jazeera.

Cost to Boeing and beyond?

Last week, Boeing temporarily halted deliveries of the 737 Max. But it’s still building them. It’s also been working on a software upgrade  for the jet’s flight systems since the October crash, and has promised new training for pilots.

On Friday, AFP news agency reported the software upgrade could be rolled out within 10 days.

Meanwhile, analysts are trying to get to grips with how much the 737 Max crisis could cost Boeing.

Some $25bn was wiped off the value of Boeing shares last week and the stock was under pressure again on Monday.

Beyond its share price, the crisis could end up costing the company billions in delivery delays, settlements with victims’ families, compensating airlines for losses relating to grounded planes, and the cost of upgrading software on existing aircraft.

But it’s too soon to know what the total financial hit could be.

“There’s no way to estimate the total cost for Boeing,” George Hamlin of Hamlin Transportation Consulting told Al Jazeera. “We don’t know yet the causation in both accidents.”

Nuggets’ Isaiah Thomas: Celtics ‘Probably’ Would’ve Won Title If I Wasn’t Traded

An 18th NBA championship banner might be hanging in TD Garden if the Boston Celtics hadn’t traded Isaiah Thomas—at least in the eyes of Thomas.

Yeah, we would have probably won a championship already,” the Denver Nuggets point guard said Monday after his team’s 114-105 win over the Celtics, per ESPN.com’s Chris Forsberg.

The two-time All-Star wore a customized green-and-gold pair of Kobe Bryant‘s signature Nike shoe.

Thomas was obviously feeling nostalgic upon his return to Boston. The team played a video tribute to him celebrating his two-and-a-half years in Celtics green.

What a moment. Celtics pay tribute to IT 🙏 https://t.co/Yf8BYcxU9G

The Celtics lost in the opening round of the 2016 playoffs but advanced to the 2017 Eastern Conference Finals, losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers in five games.

The 2017 postseason proved to be significant for Thomas personally as he continued to play through a hip injury until bowing out after Game 2 of the conference finals.

The 30-year-old hasn’t been himself since the injury. Prior to Monday night, he was averaging 13.7 points on 37.3 percent shooting from the field. He was also a 29.0 percent shooter from beyond the arc. The explosion he showed off the dribble simply isn’t there.

The Nuggets waited nine games before dropping him out of the rotation, though he played seven minutes against Boston.

Because of his rapid decline, it’s hard to see how the Celtics would’ve had a better shot at winning a title with Thomas in place of Kyrie Irving, the star whom Boston acquired to be the new starting point guard.

One could also debate whether the Celtics’ young duo of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum make the jump they did in 2017-18 with Thomas on the floor.

According to Basketball Reference, Thomas had a 34.0 percent usage rate in 2016-17 compared to 31.0 percent for Irving a season ago. Losing Irving for 22 regular-season games and the entire postseason forced Tatum and Brown to step up as well, indirectly furthering their development.

And that’s to say nothing of how the Golden State Warriors would’ve tried to expose Thomas’ defensive flaws on every possession were Boston to get to the NBA Finals.

Thomas enjoyed the best basketball of his NBA career with the Celtics, but he might be reaching a bit to say his departure damaged the franchise’s championship hopes.

Warren calls for ‘full-blown conversation about reparations’

Sen. Elizabeth Warren

Sen. Elizabeth Warren and most other 2020 candidates have cautiously approached the topic of reparations, wary of alienating voters by fully embracing the idea or being dismissive of it. | Elise Amendola/AP Photo

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) gave her most detailed answer to date on the question of reparations for black Americans as a means of addressing centuries of slavery and legal discrimination.

In a CNN town hall on Monday night in Jackson, Miss., Warren became the first 2020 presidential candidate serving in the Senate to endorse a House bill that would create a commission to study reparation proposals.

Story Continued Below

“I love the idea of this congressional commission,” she said at Jackson State, a historically black university. “I believe it’s time to start the national, full-blown conversation about reparations.”

The bill, which former Rep. John Conyers first introduced in 1989, was re-introduced by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) this past January. “The commission would also make recommendations concerning any form of apology and compensation to begin the long delayed process of atonement for slavery,” Jackson Lee said earlier this year.

Warren and most other 2020 candidates have cautiously approached the topic of reparations, wary of alienating voters by fully embracing the idea or being dismissive of it. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) has endorsed the concept of reparations but has not provided details. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) have not endorsed the idea but have said that robust steps must be taken to combat systemic racism.

“I believe we have to invest in those communities that has been so hurt by racism. It doesn’t have to be a direct pay for each person,” Klobuchar told NBC’s “Meet The Press“ during the weekend.

Former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro and New Age author Marianne Williamson have been the most unapologetic advocates for reparations.

Warren’s endorsement of the reparations commission bill was just one part of her broader pitch Monday night to voters of color, especially African Americans. She called for Mississippi to change its state flag to no longer include the Confederacy’s stars and bars, talked up her housing bill that would give special assistance to formerly redlined communities, and said that white supremacists are as great a national security threat as “any other terrorist group — like ISIS, like al-Qaida.”

Warren attempted to combine that appeal with her more familiar economic populism. She criticized oil companies, payday lenders, “giant financial institutions,” and called for the implementation of her “ultra-millionaires tax.”

She also received a positive reaction from the crowd when she discussed the role of faith in her life. Warren said she was raised Methodist and referenced the story of the Sheep and The Goats in the book of Matthew. She said a Bible school lesson on the story taught her that “there is God, there is value in every single human being” and that “we are called to action.”

Warren’s digital team also provided supporters with live-time text message updates during the CNN special, making special note of her comments on “racist redlining,” her support for “Medicare for All,” and her criticism of the National Rifle Association.

Her team signed off saying: “That town hall was 🔥. “

LaMarcus Aldridge, Spurs Stun Kevin Durant, Warriors Despite Stephen Curry’s 25

The San Antonio Spurs continued their ascent up the Western Conference standings with a 111-105 victory over the Golden State Warriors in a potential playoff preview Monday at AT&T Center.

San Antonio has won nine in a row and entered play just three games behind the third-seeded Houston Rockets. It also snapped the defending champions’ two-game winning streak.

The duo of LaMarcus Aldridge (23 points and 13 rebounds) and DeMar DeRozan (26 points, nine rebounds and eight assists) led the way for the Spurs, while Rudy Gay added 17 points, six boards and three dimes off the bench.

Stephen Curry challenged for a triple-double with 25 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, while Kevin Durant finished with 24 points for the Warriors. However, the former was just 6-of-18 from deep, and the latter dealt with foul trouble for much of the second half. Klay Thompson (14 points) also struggled from the field at 5-of-18.

Golden State is now tied with the Denver Nuggets in the race for the Western Conference’s No. 1 seed after the loss.

The first thing that comes to mind for many NBA fans when thinking about the Western Conference is likely the star power on the Warriors, the upstart Nuggets, Russell Westbrook and Paul George on the Oklahoma City Thunder, or guards such as Damian Lillard and Donovan Mitchell on other contenders.

Yet the Spurs are right in the thick of the race and hitting their stride with the postseason approaching.

San Antonio isn’t flashy. After all, Aldridge is best known for his work on the post, high-elbow and mid-range and is a steady source of production without threes and dunks. DeRozan can throw down rim-rattling jams but isn’t going to light opponents up from deep and can’t match resumes with former Spurs star Kawhi Leonard.

That didn’t stop the duo from effectively working pick-and-rolls and pick-and-pops with each other in the fourth quarter against one of the greatest dynasties the league has ever seen. DeRozan mixed in a fadeaway inside the lane and a smooth finish at the rim to help put Golden State away in crunch time.

Chris Herring @Herring_NBA

Spurs win their ninth-straight game. The streak includes victories over the first-place Warriors, first-place Nuggets, first-place Bucks, fourth-place Blazers and fifth-place Thunder. Incredible.

Chris Herring @Herring_NBA

DeRozan is on some NBA Jam fire-type stuff right now.

Aldridge isn’t going to grace top-10 highlight packages but finished with more than 20 points for the sixth time in eight March games and his fourth double-double in that span.

Having steady but unflashy stars is one thing, but the Spurs have dealt with adversity on the roster as well. Dejounte Murray—the assumed point guard heir to Tony Parker—suffered a torn ACL in October and was lost for the season, while rookie Lonnie Walker IV has dealt with injuries and appeared in just eight games.

San Antonio is relying on veterans such as Patty Mills, Marco Belinelli and Gay—who is the team’s third-leading scorer as another mid-range and spot-up shooter—as a result.

Still, it is impossible to ignore the infrastructure in place for a franchise that will make its 22nd consecutive appearance in the NBA playoffs. All-time great coach Gregg Popovich is the steady constant through the entire run, linking the teams of Tim Duncan and David Robinson to the one battling for positioning this year.

San Antonio is also ramping up for the playoffs on the defensive side and is fifth in the league in defensive rating in the last 10 games, per NBA.com.

The Spurs can slow the game down with that defense in the postseason and then go to the steady DeRozan and Aldridge in crunch time to either scare or defeat one of the Western Conference’s top seeds.

It was a formula for success against the best team in the league Monday and can be again in the playoffs.

Golden State turned to someone who hasn’t played an NBA game since the 2017-18 campaign as its starting center DeMarcus Cousins is sidelined by an ankle injury.

It wasn’t just anyone, though, as Andrew Bogut has an extensive history with the Warriors. He played for the team from 2012 through 2016, helping it win the 2015 NBA Finals and a record 73 games during the 2015-16 regular season.

While he rarely dominated offensively with so many other weapons on the roster, he was a solid role player who averaged 6.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game while shooting 58.1 percent from the field in a Golden State uniform.

He struggled to replicate that type of impact after the Warriors traded him to the Dallas Mavericks. He played a mere 26 games for Dallas before he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers and then waived. He then broke his tibia in his first game with the Cleveland Cavaliers and appeared in just 23 games for the 2017-18 Los Angeles Lakers before he was waived.

Perhaps it was that lack of success elsewhere that helped him realize what an ideal opportunity it is to rejoin the defending champs:

Logan Murdock @loganmmurdock

Andrew Bogut on how he got back to Golden State: “My agent didn’t even know I was talking to Golden State… It was too good of an opportunity to pass up.” https://t.co/FL6mLRWqHr

Bogut has been away from the NBA but won’t be particularly rusty heading into the playoffs since he won the 2018-19 NBL MVP and defender of the year while playing in his home country of Australia.

He looked right at home on the receiving end of a lob pass from Curry for one of three first-half dunks that came from Splash Brothers assists. Opposing defenses have to devote so much attention to the shooting and playmaking of Curry and Thompson that Bogut didn’t even have to set the screen on a pick-and-roll before he flashed to the lane for a dunk.

Bleacher Report NBA @BR_NBA

Bogut is BACK.

(via @warriors)
https://t.co/eyErkkKOIA

It is more than just Bogut’s ability to finish and play off the primary playmakers that makes him an ideal late-season addition for the Warriors.

He is familiar with the roster and head coach Steve Kerr’s approach and is not someone who is going to demand the ball and throw off the on-court chemistry down the stretch. The veteran understands his role and is willing to battle on the boards and do the dirty work while the All-Star-caliber talent throughout the roster does the majority of the scoring.

Bogut finished with seven points and seven rebounds, and it is his work on the boards in particular that stands out because it allows the other Warriors to break out into transition quicker and unleash their dangerous tempo.

The big man also won’t be intimidated by the championship stage to come with 58 playoff games on his resume and will provide a physical presence off the bench to take some of the defensive responsibility off Cousins’ shoulders in the latter’s first postseason appearance.

Golden State will likely have to battle with some combination of Nikola Jokic, Clint Capela, Jusuf Nurkic, Steven Adams, Aldridge and Rudy Gobert in the post in the playoffs, which could sap some of Cousins’ effectiveness on the offensive end.

Bogut is the perfect candidate to spell the four-time All-Star in the playoffs to preserve his durability all while doing the small things that help teams win in May and June.

What’s Next?

The Warriors are at the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday, while the Spurs host the Miami Heat on Wednesday.

Thailand’s neglected northeast hopes for election ‘miracle’

Waeng Noi, Thailand – As a deepening red sun slips from the sky behind the parched paddy fields of Isaan in Thailand’s northeast, villagers walk their floppy eared cows back home for the night and Pheu Thai hopeful Saratsanun Unnopporn makes her pitch for votes.

The 30-year-old first-time politician is one of 41 candidates on the ballot paper for the constituency just over an hour south of Khon Kaen city, but she is confident of victory in Sunday’s election, the first since a military coup in 2014.

“In the last five years is anyone in a better position?” Saratsanun asks the crowd of mostly white-haired villagers, speaking in the local dialect as well as Thai. The state of the economy is on everyone’s minds and the villagers shake their heads.

Isaan is Pheu Thai’s spiritual home; the country’s most populous and largely agricultural region whose people propelled telecommunications tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra to power in 2001 on a platform of pro-poor policies. People in Isaan have backed Thaksin-linked parties ever since despite the cycle of protests and military coups that have forced successive popularly elected governments – most recently Pheu Thai – from power.

Thaksin and his sister Yingluck – who was prime minister from 2011 to 2014 – live in exile.

Now, with the economy having shown little sign of improvement under the generals, many Thais are looking to support parties that will boost growth and implement policies that will make a demonstrable improvement in their lives.

Saratsanun Unnopporn, a candidate for Pheu Thai, campaigns at a village in northeastern Thailand [Hathairat Phaholtap/Al Jazeera]

‘Excited to vote’

At early voting on Sunday – a week before the election proper – people in Khon Kaen, Isaan’s second-biggest city, waited patiently beneath the fierce sun to cast their ballots.

“I’m very excited to vote,” said Nipaporn Phumipark, who was voting for the first time in her life. “I never thought I would get to do it.”

The 20-year-old Khon Kaen resident said she had decided to back the pro-military Palang Pracharat Party because the candidate in her constituency was a local man.

Others were reluctant to reveal their intentions, but some said they would be voting Pheu Thai. Under new election rules, the party is banned from using Thaksin’s name or image during campaigning.

“I like their economic policies,” said Bangon Khamsuk, 43, adding she was happy to finally be voting again. “When they were in power they made the economy better.” She said she was hoping the pro-democracy parties would win, despite a new constitution that stacks the odds in favour of the military. “I hope we will see a miracle.”

The generals’ economic initiatives have focussed mainly on modernising Thailand’s infrastructure – Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha was in Khon Kaen earlier this month to open a newly renovated central station and a light rail is also planned – but the impact of the more than 40 planned projects has yet to filter to the ground.

Growth in Southeast Asia’s second-biggest economy has remained around four percent a year, below Thailand’s neighbours in the region and well below its actual potential, according to economists.

‘Attitude adjustment’

But for the people of the northeast, whose choice of government has been overthrown again and again by the elite that has traditionally dominated Thailand’s politics, it is not only economic hardship that has taken its toll.

Attitudes have also been shaped by the crackdown that accompanied the 2014 putsch.

“It might have been possible immediately after the coup for the military to initiate some real effort at bringing reconciliation to the various parties, but it was clear from the very beginning that the primary impulse was to eliminate as much of what they believed to be ‘Thaksin influence’ in Thai politics as possible,” David Streckfuss, a historian and independent scholar based in Khon Kaen, told Al Jazeera.

Scores of political critics as well as the regional and local leaders of the red shirts, who took to the streets in defence first of Thaksin and then Yingluck, fled overseas. Some villages, seen as overly sympathetic to the cause, were required to undergo “attitude adjustment” – told why military rule was good for the country and good for peace. Others found themselves detained under repressive laws.

Pornchanok Boonchai’s husband, a security guard at a bank, was arrested in May 2014 and accused of being part of a plot to topple the military government. He remains in jail where he also faces charges under the Computer Crime Act and Lese Majeste.

“He didn’t do anything wrong,” 58-year-old Pornchanok told Al Jazeera, propping herself up on pillows because an old injury made it painful for her to sit in one position for too long. “Why is he still being kept in jail, why is he still being kept inside?” Pornchanok wiped tears from her face with a tissue. “The people who took him should release him. He’s been held too long.”

Pornchanok Boonchai’s husband was detained in May 2014 and she says he has done nothing wrong [Kate Mayberry/Al Jazeera]

Opinion polls last month suggested about 45 percent of Isaan voters were leaning towards Pheu Thai, followed by Future Forward, the upstart party of car parts tycoon Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, on 21 percent and Palang Pracharat with seven percent. Not to be outdone, Palang Pracharat is also offering goodies to voters in the form of higher welfare payments to elderly people, financial support to farmers, and a three-year moratorium on agricultural debt.

‘I burnt it all’

Widower Kangwan Yotikha, 55, farms around three hectares of land about 90 minutes north of Khon Kaen with rice, sugarcane, rubber and fruit including mango and coconut.

Sitting in his wooden hut surrounded by banana trees, two pictures of the king on the wall behind him, he says he wants a government that understands business and does more to help farmers.

He’s reduced the amount of land dedicated to rubber with the collapse in prices, and a few metres away, his sugarcane fields are burned black.

“Life is difficult,” Kangwan told Al Jazeera. “The price of sugarcane has come down. There’s no point selling and there are no labourers to harvest it anyway, so I burnt it all.”

Kangwan once worked in Bangkok and was among thousands of red shirts who took to the streets in 2010. Now, he hopes Pheu Thai will be returned to power again.

Back in Waeng Noi, Saratsanun is explaining the new voting system to the villagers.

Under the new constitution drawn up by the military, the lower house of parliament will be chosen not only through direct elections, but according to each party’s popularity. Saratsanun stresses the importance of not only voting for her, but also for the party.

“If you want Sudarat Keyuraphan [the Pheu Thai candidate] to be prime minister you must vote for Pheu Thai,” she tells them.

The odds might be stacked against Thailand’s democratic forces, but the 30-year-old is not giving up without a fight.

“No matter what laws they try to establish to weaken us, no matter what other measures they try to weaken us, we have to stand up to dictatorship,” she tells the crowd as the night closes in.

Gillibrand defends handling of harassment complaints

2020 Elections

‘This employee was dearly valued. I told her she that she was loved, by us, by our office, by me personally.’

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand defended her office’s handling of sexual harassment claims on Monday night, saying that an aide was “believed” and that her complaints were “fully investigated.”

The New York Democrat, an advocate of the #MeToo movement who is running for president, said during an MSNBC town hall that the Senate staffer’s allegations “did not rise to sexual harassment, but we did find evidence of derogatory comments,” adding that her senior aide Abbas Malik, who allegedly made unwanted sexual advances, “was punished.”

Story Continued Below

Earlier this month, POLITICO first reported on the former Gillibrand staffer’s decision to resign in protest over the office’s handling of her sexual harassment claims last summer. However, when presented with reporting of additional allegations of workplace misconduct by Malik, Gillibrand’s office opened a new investigation into the aide and dismissed him in early March.

“In terms of my own office, the woman who came forward, she was believed, her allegations were taken seriously,” Gillibrand said during the town hall. “This employee was dearly valued. I told her she that she was loved, by us, by our office, by me personally.”

Gillibrand also pushed back on criticism that she was too quick to demand the resignation of Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) in 2017, after eight women accused him of sexual harassment. Gillibrand was the first Democratic senator to call on Franken to resign, and she was soon joined by two dozen other senators from the party.

“Senator Franken was entitled to whatever type of review or process he wanted,” Gillibrand said. “He could’ve stuck it out, stayed in the Senate, gone through [the] Ethics Committee’s investigation. Those were his choices, but I had to make my choice.”

Some major Democratic donors, including Susie Tompkins Buell, have expressed frustration about Gillibrand’s decision to call for Franken’s resignation. But Gillibrand said that “if there are a few powerful Democratic donors who are angry,” then “that’s on them.”

During the town hall, Gillibrand detailed her support for a range of popular progressive issues, including the Green New Deal and raising the minimum wage.

On health care, Gillibrand — who has signed on to the Medicare-for-all bill authored by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), another candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination — said that she would support allowing Americans to first buy into Medicare at any age to “create a not-for-profit public option as a transition,” rather than immediately eliminating all private health insurance and moving to a single-payer system.

Gillibrand said she “dares” the private health insurance companies to compete against a public option, “because I don’t think they’ll meet the needs because they’re for-profit companies.”

“I imagine, within a few years, most Americans are going to choose Medicare because it’s quality and more affordable,” she said.

She also addressed her conservative record on guns and immigration as a House member, when she represented a Republican district in upstate New York. At the time, she received an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association, and also supported making English the official language of the United States.

On guns, Gillibrand acknowledged that she “should have been better,” adding that she “was humbled, and regretted I didn’t think beyond the priorities or needs of the people I represented.”

It only felt right.

Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki used his vintage fadeaway mid-range jumper during Monday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans to pass Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain for sixth on the NBA‘s all-time scoring list.

Nowitzki is a surefire future Hall of Famer as the 2006-07 NBA MVP, 2011 NBA Finals MVP, 12-time All-NBA selection and 14-time All-Star who averaged more than 20 points per game 13 times in his career.

That scoring prowess helped him gradually climb this list, and he has averaged 20.8 points a night in 21 seasons in the league.

He was a nightmare matchup in his prime because of his ability to shoot at 7’0″ and draw opposing frontcourt players away from the rim. While he would dribble past them at that point, he also was capable of shooting his patented fadeaway over smaller defenders if opposing coaches switched or doubled him.

The question now is whether he will continue playing beyond the 2018-19 campaign and perhaps catch Jordan like James did earlier this season.

Jordan (32,292) finished with 873 more points than Chamberlain, and Nowitzki scored 927 just last season. That means the Mavericks great could theoretically catch His Airness if he returned for the 2019-20 season and racked up three-pointers as a veteran role player.

He told reporters during All-Star Weekend that he hasn’t officially said he will retire and will “wait and see the last couple of weeks, how my body feels and if I continue to see improvement and I’m still having fun, we’ll see.”

That hasn’t stopped NBA arenas across the league from greeting him with standing ovations and chants as he continues to add to a legacy that now features more points than Chamberlain.

Report: Blake Bortles, Rams Finalizing Contract After 5 Seasons with Jaguars

Blake Bortles is reportedly off to Los Angeles.

The former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback is “finalizing a deal to join the Rams as Jared Goff’s backup,” according to Jeff Darlington of ESPN, after being released in the wake of the Nick Foles signing.

The Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos were interested in Bortles as well, according to Michael Silver of the NFL Network.

The 26-year-old was the No. 3 overall pick by the Jags in the 2014 NFL draft and looked like he might live up to that billing in his second season, throwing for 4,428 yards and 35 touchdowns.

However, there were warning signs that despite those gaudy numbers, Bortles wasn’t going to be a great quarterback, namely his 18 interceptions and 58.6 completion percentage that season.

And indeed, he struggled from there, never eclipsing 4,000 passing yards in a season while throwing just 57 touchdown passes to 40 interceptions over the next three campaigns. And while the Jaguars made a run to the AFC Championship Game in the 2017 season, they limped to a 5-11 record last year.

Despite his struggles, the Jaguars committed to him to the tune of a three-year, $54 million extension in Feb. 2018. He lasted just one year into that extension.

The University of Central Florida product struggles with accuracy (59.3 career completion percentage) and isn’t an effective downfield passer (6.7 yards per attempt for his career). While he has impressive athleticism and is at his best extending plays and escaping pressure with his legs, his struggles in the pocket limited Jacksonville’s upside.

That prompted the team to sign Foles to a four-year, $88 million deal, and in the process ended the Bortles era.

For the Rams, Bortles is being brought aboard as a backup, likely his future role in the NFL after his struggles with the Jaguars. In that role, he represents solid value given his experience. As a starter, he was a liability. It was time for a change, and this should be a solid one for both sides.

In Los Angeles, Bortles will be adjusting to life behind Goff, the team’s franchise quarterback who has shown significant improvement under head coach Sean McVay. For Bortles, working with the team will be an opportunity to improve and show off those improvements in the preseason, where he could catch the eyes of other teams.

Take major steps in Los Angeles, and Bortles could be an option for teams looking for veteran starters at quarterback down the road. He may be Goff’s backup, but Bortles will still be working to eventually return to starting status elsewhere.
