Wild WWE WrestleMania 35 Will Be Remembered for Giving Fans What They Wanted

WWE

With ratings flailing, Vince McMahon and family got on stage in late 2018 and promised to start listening to fans and giving them what they want.

WrestleMania 35 was the culmination of that promise.

Yes, it was messy. The show went entirely too long. Becky Lynch’s win had an awkward finish. Michael Cole’s voice was cracking. WWE didn’t even run a recap video package at the end. Lynch got the titles, a few fireworks went off and that was a wrap. Fans were likely sprinting for the exits. It was a work night, after all.

Yet the show delivered on WWE’s promise.

The full card rundown says it all. Something as simple as Curt Hawkins’ losing streak ending by winning the Raw tag team titles with Zack Ryder was a feel-good moment.

And that was just the beginning.

In as epic a tone-setting match as one will see at a WrestleMania, Seth Rollins stripped Brock Lesnar of the universal title quickly after some pre-match shenanigans.

Call it an apology of sorts from WWE—they botched getting the title off Lesnar a few times and put it on him again when Roman Reigns left. Sorry, here’s the match, boom. The title’s back on Raw.

Adam Silverstein @SilversteinAdam

Nine title matches. Seven title changes.

Sixteen matches. Twelve face victories.

#WrestleMania35

What else? AJ Styles put on a classic and beat Randy Orton in a 50-50 match. The Usos retained the SmackDown tag titles, surviving their punishment for aiding Kofi Kingston. Shane McMahon and The Miz did wild stunts. The IIconics were bestowed with the ‘Mania platform to ascend to women’s tag champs by downing The Boss ‘n’ Hug Connection.

Then there was Kingston. It was understandable if fans felt a sense of dread about his fight with Daniel Bryan. Rollins had won earlier in the night, and Lynch was presumably going to win the main event. If WWE wanted to avoid giving out three title changes—all to the fan favorites—this was going to be the match where the good guy lost.

But he didn’t. Kingston matched the technical prowess of Bryan blow for blow and emerged the winner. In a touching moment afterward, he celebrated with not just his fellow New Day members, but also his children, wrapping up a nice 11-year journey that now feels like it’s just beginning.

The cool-down matches after didn’t swerve away from the theme. Samoa Joe, a fan favorite often clamored for as a main event contender, absolutely demolished Rey Mysterio in about 60 seconds to keep the United States title. Reigns won over Drew McIntyre, with the announcers detailing how it was a win for those affected by similar ailments as to those the former universal champion faced outside the ring.

Even Triple H and Batista was a lot of fun, with weird nose-ring pulling, tripping entering the ring and a dash of Ric Flair for good measure.

WWE @WWE

THIS is what #WrestleMania is ALL ABOUT.

#WWEChampionship @TrueKofi @WWEBigE @XavierWoodsPhD https://t.co/AOijtUS0vz

Maybe the only negative was Kurt Angle losing to Baron Corbin in his farewell match. But that’s easily waved off—it isn’t uncommon for a legend to go out on his back, putting over up-and-coming talent as he says goodbye. Fans are safe to assume that’s what happened here.

There’s more (this show was entirely too long). John Cena busted out the Thuganomics. Finn Balor brought out The Demon to win the intercontinental title from Bobby Lashley. The Irishman’s entrance was superb, while Triple H’s wasat the very leastan acceptable length.

Then there was the main event.

It felt like a proper, brutal fight. Sometimes the hyped bouts, where participants promise violence, fall flat. Think that one time Dean Ambrose fought Lesnar at a WrestleMania.

Not here. All three women were wearing welts quickly. Ronda Rousey took a nasty spill head-first outside. Charlotte Flair went through a table. It goes on and on, but everyone upped their game, slowly breathing new life into an understandably fading crowd.

In a fitting turn of events, the main event had an odd finish. WWE backed itself into a corner of sorts with Rousey and it feels like the roll-up finish was baked into existence because they didn’t actually want an MMA legend tapping out. But Lynch had to get the win over Rowdy or it wouldn’t feel as legitimate.

So the compromise was a surprise roll-up move after a slam, where unfortunately one of Rousey’s shoulders didn’t stay down during the three-count and the announcing team went on to awkwardly talk about it.

WWE @WWE

NEW #RAW #WomensChampion.
NEW #SDLive #WomensChampion.

@BeckyLynchWWE just made HISTORY! #WrestleMania #BeckyLynch https://t.co/thDQ3KUDMz

Yes, it’s a little disappointing the first-ever women’s main event ended on a roll-up. And the fans in attendance probably weren’t too thrilled. But this is WWE. It can get turned into a storyline in a heartbeat. The finish leaves a little wiggle room for an eventual rematch, whenever it may be depending on if Rousey decides to take time off or not.

There is an important catch to the main event—the right person won. Finish aside, WWE had its finger on the pulse of fans and didn’t blink while pulling the trigger. They could have easily treated Rousey like Lesnar and had her retain even if she is leaving. Or the belts could have gone to Flair, who certainly has the name and resume, and she would draw plenty of heat for picking up the win over the fan favorite.

But the McMahons and WWE made a promise some months ago and delivered when it mattered most. Wrestling inside the ring (or getting into it, Batista) isn’t always perfect, which fans can understand. But the decisions can be, provided the company wants to make it happen.

At WrestleMania 35, WWE did. The favorites got their wins, and by extension, so did the fans. That it was a little sloppy and exhausting at times is fitting more than anything else.

BTS Look To The Past To Move Forward With ‘Boy With Luv’ Teaser Featuring Halsey

Big Hit Entertainment

Before they were international superstars, BTS were just a group of immature boys in luv. Now, a few years older — and wiser — the Korean septet are on the cusp of dropping what could be their biggest release yet. On Sunday (April 7), BTS announced the lead single from their forthcoming mini album, Map of the Soul: Persona, with a teaser featuring American pop star Halsey. But what surprised fans most wasn’t the Halsey collab (though, that’s pretty cool because she’s a major BTS fan), but rather the title of the single itself: “Boy With Luv.”

It’s impossible to know what kind of vibe BTS are going for with “Boy With Luv” from this short snippet. After all, BTS teasers are notoriously hard to decipher. But what we do hear sounds promising — an electro-pop beat and Jungkook’s crystalline vocals singing, “then a boy with love.” The imagery is also striking. Halsey, with her hot pink hair, is seen closing a ticket window and strutting past BTS as they sit outside a small movie theater, its neon sign reading “Persona” in blue letters. The scene then changes, as the seven members of BTS stand with their backs facing the camera under a sign that says “Love.”

Of course, astute fans have already caught on to the fact that the point choreography seen in the teaser mimics that of their 2014 single, “Boy In Luv.” Given the fact that leader and rapper RM’s Persona intro track also featured a sample from the group’s 2014 song, “Intro: Skool Luv Affair,” it seems like BTS are coming full circle with their latest release, a testament to their growth and maturity as a group and also as individuals.

It’s also important to note that the Korean title for “Boy With Luv” roughly translates to “A Poem for the Small Things.”

BTS have never shied away from their past, even taking the time to reflect on and own up to past mistakes. And in fact, it looks like “Boy With Luv” is the result of that self-reflection. (Hence the movie theater setting; what better way to reflect than to see scenes from your past?) Coming off the heels of the Love Yourself era, in which the group produced a trilogy of albums that told a story of love, loss, and self-discovery — and ended with a celebration of self-love — Persona aims to pick up where the group left off. Having learned that loving yourself is the key to true happiness, BTS are now boys with love to share.

The contrast between being boys in love then and being boys with love now is important. Back then, in 2014, they acted out, sometimes aggressively, in the name of love or infatuation; now, the love they harbor comes from within, the purest form of love. This was teased during the group’s performance at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in December last year with a brief vignette that read: “You gave me power. You gave me love. So now I’m a hero, so now I’m a boy with love. I’ll show you the map of the soul. I’ll show you the dream.”

Of course, “Boy With Luv” isn’t a conclusion; BTS aren’t so naive as to think they’ve figured it out completely. They keep evolving — as musicians, as artists, as humans — because self-discovery is a journey, not a destination.

“Boy With Luv” will be released simultaneously in South Korea and the U.S., dropping at 6 p.m. KST, or 5 a.m. EST and 2 a.m. PST, on Friday, April 12. The Korean group will then make their Saturday Night Live debut on April 13.

UK looks to crack down on social media companies which don’t stop harmful content

The UK announces its plan to tackle harmful online content.

By Johnny Lieu

The UK is set to unveil new measures against the spread of harmful and violent content on the internet.

The Online Harms white paper, set to be released on Monday morning by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, introduces a new independent regulator for social media companies, file hosting sites, and other companies which host content.

SEE ALSO: Social media companies which fail to remove violent content face fines or jail time in Australia

These companies will be required to ensure that they restrict the spread of harmful content on their platforms, and to abide by a mandatory “duty of care” statute.

These “online harms” are defined as content which is violent, encourages suicide, contains disinformation, is cyberbullying, or results in children accessing inappropriate material.

The new regulator is looking to enforce these rules with threats of substantial fines, blocked access to sites, and the potential to impose liability on executives of these companies.

“The tech giants and social media companies have a moral duty to protect the young people they profit from,” Home Secretary Sajid Javid said in a statement.

The measures have been supported by child protection charities in the UK, such as the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), which welcomed punishments for companies which fail to act.

“For too long social networks have failed to prioritise children’s safety and left them exposed to grooming, abuse, and harmful content,” NSPCC CEO Peter Wanless said in a statement.

Regulation of internet companies has been on the cards for governments around the world, given the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the spread of misinformation, the latter of which Singapore intends to rein in with its proposed fake news bill.

The livestream and the subsequent dissemination of the Christchurch terrorist attack video has sped up legislation in Australia, which last week rushed in laws threatening fines and jail time for companies which fail to “expeditiously” remove extreme violent content.

These laws were criticised for the speed in which they were implemented, and the potential impacts it has on censorship. It’s these concerns which have been mirrored with the UK proposal by freedom of expression organisation, Index on Censorship.

“The online harms white paper will set the direction for future internet regulation,” Joy Hyvarinen, head of advocacy at Index on Censorship, said in a statement online on Friday.

The organisation said the UK’s “duty of care” element encourages companies to restrict and remove content, and a wide definition of “online harms” could hamper freedom of expression.

“The era of self-regulation for online companies is over.”

“Index is concerned that protecting freedom of expression is less important than the government wanting to be seen as ‘doing something’ in response to public pressure,” Hyvarinen added.

“Internet regulation needs a calm, evidence-based approach that safeguards freedom of expression rather than undermining it.”

For the UK government, which has already signalled its intention to regulate internet companies, it doesn’t believe tech has done enough to combat harmful content.

“The era of self-regulation for online companies is over. Voluntary actions from industry to tackle online harms have not been applied consistently or gone far enough,” Digital Secretary Jeremy Wright said in a statement.

“Tech can be an incredible force for good and we want the sector to be part of the solution in protecting their users. However those that fail to do this will face tough action.

“We want the UK to be the safest place in the world to go online, and the best place to start and grow a digital business and our proposals for new laws will help make sure everyone in our country can enjoy the Internet safely.”

US Homeland Security chief Nielsen resigns amid border turmoil

US Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who oversaw President Donald Trump’s bitterly contested immigration policies during her tumultuous 16-month tenure, has resigned amid a surge in the number of migrants at the border with Mexico.

Trump announced Nielsen’s departure on Sunday, underscoring the president’s intent to toughen immigration policy amid a surge in illegal crossings along the southern border.

A senior administration official said Trump asked for Nielsen’s resignation and she gave it.

Trump, who has recently expressed growing anger about the situation at the border, said on Twitter: “Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen will be leaving her position, and I would like to thank her for her service.”

….Mexico must apprehend all illegals and not let them make the long march up to the United States, or we will have no other choice than to Close the Border and/or institute Tariffs. Our Country is FULL!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 8, 2019

In another tweet, Trump said Kevin McAleenan, the current US Customs and Border Protection commissioner, would become acting DHS secretary.

In a tweet late on Sunday, Nielsen said that she would stay on until Wednesday.

“I have agreed to stay on as Secretary through Wednesday, April 10th to assist with an orderly transition and ensure that key DHS missions are not impacted,” she said.

The move came just two days after Nielseon and Trump visited the Mexican border in California together, with the president delivering a stern message to would-be illegal immigrants and asylum seekers: “Our country is full.”

Migrants seek refuge in churches in the US

Nielsen, 46, had been DHS secretary since December 2017. Her departure had been repeatedly rumored over the past year, particularly after a wave of anger over the administration’s 2018 family separation policy at the border with Mexico.

A senior Trump administration official said the president’s national security adviser, John Bolton, after a blowup with Nielsen late last year, also recommended to Trump that she should go.

Trump has made a clampdown on illegal immigration a centrepiece of his two-year-old presidency, leading chants of “Build that wall” at his rallies as he has sought to cut back on the number of newcomers entering the United States without proper documentation.

Border Patrol estimates put the number of migrants passing through Mexico at over 100,000 in March, most from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala: the highest monthly figure in nearly a decade, according to Nielsen.

Trump cut aid to those three countries last month in response to the surge.

“When even the most radical voices in the administration aren’t radical enough for President Trump, you know he’s completely lost touch with the American people,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi added it was “deeply alarming that the Trump Administration official who put children in cages is reportedly resigning because she is not extreme enough for the White House’s liking”.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ press conference left chairs empty to honor fallen comrades

It's OK, Cap.
It’s OK, Cap.

By Shannon Connellan

Warning: This story contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

Sometimes a press conference is just a press conference. But it’s not often a memorial that punches you right in the heart.

On Sunday, Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame press conference held in Los Angeles reminded us of exactly how many of our MCU comrades have fallen, by leaving chairs empty among the stars.

SEE ALSO: ‘Avengers: Endgame’ poster sparks photoshop tributes to all our fallen non-Marvel heroes

Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo, alongside stars Brie Larson, Chris Evans and Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Don Cheadle, and more took to their designated spots on stage.

But as you can see, half the chairs were left empty to represent those who were snapped into oblivion at the end of Infinity War. It’s too much.

Harold “Happy” Hogan himself, Jon Favreau, introduced the stunt before hosting the conference.

“Clearly, things look a little different in a post-Infinity War Marvel Cinematic Universe,” he told reporters. “Post-snap there’s a few empty seats.”

It’s a pretty Stark (sorry) reminder of how many of our Avenger friends we’ve lost to that giant purple jerk, Thanos. Gimmicky, but truly effective.

We were still getting over the posters Marvel released in March, which reminded us exactly who was alive and dead using a simple black and white filter. At least it’s handy to know where we stand.

Avengers: Endgame hits cinemas on April 26.

Stephen Miller pressuring Trump officials amid immigration shakeups

White House senior adviser Stephen Miller

White House

The White House hardliner is driving a more aggressive immigration approach.

As President Donald Trump roils the capital over illegal immigration, his influential aide Stephen Miller is playing a more aggressive behind-the-scenes role in a wider administration shakeup.

Frustrated by the lack of headway on a signature Trump campaign issue, the senior White House adviser has been arguing for personnel changes to bring in more like-minded hardliners, according to three people familiar with the situation — including the ouster of a key immigration official at the Department of Homeland Security, whose secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, announced on Sunday that she is resigning.

Story Continued Below

Miller has also recently been telephoning mid-level officials at several federal departments and agencies to angrily demand that they do more to stem the flow of immigrants into the country, according to two people familiar with the calls.

The pressure comes as Trump, who forced a government shutdown over his demand for a Mexican border wall, is again making immigration the central theme of his presidency; last week, Trump backed off his threats to shut down the border entirely.

The officials at the Departments of Homeland Security, Justice and State, who each handle different parts of the immigration process, were initially surprised that a high-ranking White House official like Miller would call them directly, rather than contact their bosses.

“It’s intimidation,” one of the people who was briefed on the calls told POLITICO. “Anytime you get a call like this from the White House it’s intimidation … Under normal circumstances, if you were a deputy in one of these agencies, it would be very unusual.”

“There’s definitely a larger shakeup abreast being led by Stephen Miller and the staunch right wing within the administration,” said a person close to Nielsen, who resigned Sunday after months of pressure from a president who felt she was not tough enough on illegal immigration. “They failed with the courts and with Congress and now they’re eating their own.”

It was not immediately clear whether Miller played a role in the departure of Nielsen, who resigned during a Sunday evening meeting with Trump and whose approach to border enforcement often exasperated Miller and other hardline immigration reform advocates, who saw her as insufficiently bold.

A 33-year-old policy adviser and speechwriter, Miller is the Trump administration’s most influential advocate for stricter immigration policies. He uses his close relationship with Trump and tight ties to conservative media to shape the president’s thinking. But he has kept a relatively low public profile in recent months, even as Trump has hammered constantly at what he calls a “crisis” on the southern border, where illegal crossings have recently surged.

But critics of Trump’s policies and personnel moves believe that Miller may be playing an instrumental role. Several members of Congress, unhappily surprised by Vitiello’s withdrawal, and have been asking administration officials and lobbyists for an explanation.

Miller and the White House didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Miller also has been pushing for Trump to fire Lee Francis Cissna, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, who has overseen implementation of some of the administration’s lesser-known immigration policies, including green card reforms and changes to how the federal government processes and admits refugees.

“He’s actively trying to put in place people who have very different points of view than the current leadership within the agencies,” said a former DHS official familiar with Miller’s efforts. “His idea is basically [to] clean house.”

Miller also appears to have played a role in Trump’s surprise move on Friday to withdraw his nomination of acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Ronald Vitiello, whom he had moved to install permanently, saying he wanted to take the agency in a “tougher direction.”

Miller had informed the president days before he pulled Vitiello’s nomination that the acting ICE chief had reservations about closing down the southern border, which Trump has recently threatened to do against the recommendation of some of his top economic advisers and policy aides.

“He thinks we can be tougher — that if we only can do more tough talk this may stop,” said another person close to DHS.

The decision to pull Vitiello’s nomination came as a surprise to Nielsen, who protested the move, according to two people close to the situation. It also shocked Republicans on Capitol Hill.

“It’s kind of a kick in the face to ICE in the middle of a very difficult period,” said a congressional aide. “There’s understandably a limited bench for people who are willing and able to do the job.”

Several Republican members of Congress have called the White House to question Vitiello’s withdrawal, according to two people familiar with the phone calls.

“There’s a worry now that there’s an erosion of people that actually have operational judgment that can at least provide the president with counsel about what will be some of the negative consequences for some of these ideas,” said a person close to DHS.

Miller’s efforts to oust Cissna from his post, meanwhile, have frustrated even some of the White House aide’s usual allies.

“If there’s anyone worthy of the White House’s ire on the immigration issue, it certainly isn’t Francis Cissna,” said RJ Hauman, government relations director at the Federation for American Immigration Reform. “A change at the top of USCIS would be a colossal mistake.”

But Miller has left some officials feeling as though they, too, could be in jeopardy if they don’t pursue a more aggressive approach to border control. His calls to several officials — including Craig Symons, chief counsel at USCIS; Carl Risch, the assistant secretary of State for Consular Affairs; ICE deputy director Matthew Albence; and Kathy Nuebel, policy and strategy chief at USCIS — have sometimes included discussions about poor work performance among colleagues, according to a source briefed on one such conversation.

Last week, as Trump threatened once again to shut down the border — a threat he later walked back, saying he would instead impose auto tariffs on Mexico if immigration and drug trafficking is not curtailed — Miller held a conference call with immigration activists to explain the administration’s position and answer questions.

He has told allies that the administration is out of ideas about how to stem the migrant tide at the border, according to a source familiar with the conversations.

The number of family members intercepted at the southwest border soared in March, according to preliminary CBP statistics. While overall arrests remain below the higher levels of the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s, the Trump administration argues families and children present unique humanitarian and security issues.

Trump officials have also recently discussed creating an immigration “czar” — a single official who would oversee the issue across dozens of departments and agencies. The position would not require Senate confirmation.

Eliana Johnson and Ted Hesson contributed to this story.

The Rockets already had the record earlier this season when they made 26 in a December win over the Washington Wizards.

James Harden was unsurprisingly a big part of the success, shooting 5-of-6 from beyond the arc to finish with 39 points. However, it was a balanced effort with four other players scoring at least 28 points and eight different players making at least one three-pointer.

Eric Gordon went 8-of-13 on his own from beyond the arc.

Houston entered the day leading the NBA with 16.1 made threes per game, well ahead of the second-place Milwaukee Bucks with 13.5 per game.

Ex-chairman Ghosn expected to be removed from Nissan’s board

Ex-chairman Ghosn expected to be removed from Nissan's board
Ghosn was arrested again on Thursday and his detention was extended until April 14 [Kyodo via Reuters]

Nissan Motor is expected to remove Carlos Ghosn from its board at an extraordinary shareholders meeting after the former chairman and the Japanese carmaker were charged with financial misconduct.

Japan’s second-largest carmaker will propose the dismissal of Ghosn from its board on Monday after removing him as chairman in November following his arrest, while bringing in Renault’s new chairman Jean-Dominique Senard as a new member.

They will also likely jettison as a board member Greg Kelly, a US executive who served as Ghosn’s right-hand man and who also faces charges in Japan.

In 1999, Renault sent Ghosn to spearhead a turnaround at Nissan, which nearly went bankrupt, after forging a capital alliance with the Japanese carmaker.

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Motors alliance sold more than 10 million vehicles in 2018 after Ghosn reinvigorated Nissan.

On Friday, the Tokyo District Court approved the detention of the 65-year-old until April 14 after prosecutors took Ghosn into custody over a new allegation that he was responsible for Nissan sustaining a $5m loss.

This period can be extended for a further 10 days if the court allows, meaning Ghosn is unlikely to be released any time soon.

Thursday’s arrest came nearly a month after he was released on bail from the Tokyo Detention Centre in early March after 108 days in custody.

Ghosn faces three separate charges. The first two relate to the alleged deferring of around $80m in income and concealing this in official documents to shareholders.

The third, more complex, charge is that he attempted to transfer personal losses to Nissan and paid a Saudi contact who provided collateral from company funds.

Just before his rearrest, Ghosn had appeared on Twitter to announce a news conference for April 11 – which will now not happen barring a further surprise.

However, he gave a combative interview to France’s TF1 television channel where he again denounced his downfall as a Nissan “plot” and voiced fears he might not receive a fair trial.

“It’s obvious it’s a plot,” said Ghosn. “Everything needs to be put on the table. Of course, I have names.

“Some of them you have seen in the press, but there are others that haven’t been in the press.”

‘Stuber’ trailer: Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista team up for rideshare comedy

By Shannon Connellan

Imagine a high-action buddy cop situation that kicks off during your next Uber ride.

Comedian Kumail Nanjiani and Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista have teamed up for exactly that in 20th Century Fox’s new action comedy, Stuber.

The film follows the exploits of an Uber driver (yep, named Stu) just going about his day, when he’s suddenly pulled into a hot criminal pursuit with a suddenly on-the-case- LAPD passenger.

Looks like a pretty strong support cast too, with Parks and Recreation‘s Natalie Morales, GLOW‘s Betty Bilpin, Mile 22‘s Iko Uwais, and the Oscar winner Mira Sorvino.

Stuber lands in cinemas in July 2019.
