Dwyane Wade, Heat Eliminated from Playoffs After Pistons Win vs. Grizzlies

The Miami Heat impressed in a 122-99 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday at AmericanAirlines Arena, but it was to no avail as far as their postseason chances.

According to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press, Dwyane Wade and the Heat were officially eliminated from the playoff picture when the Detroit Pistons defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 100-93.

The lack of a playoff appearance would have done little to temper the mood in Miami during Wade’s final home game.

The future Hall of Famer scored 30 points in front of the home fans, received a tribute video from the team and was greeted with a message from Barack Obama:

Special words for @DwyaneWade from @BarackObama! https://t.co/GADfeq4jT6

It is no wonder Wade was treated like royalty in his final home game. He is a Miami icon and has been the face of the franchise since it selected him with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft. He won three championships and the 2006 NBA Finals MVP during his tenure.

He was also recognized as an eight-time All-NBA selection, 13-time All-Star and three-time All-Defensive selection during his career, underscoring his ability to impact the game in a number of ways beyond just scoring even though he led the league in points per game in 2008-09.

Despite the incredible career, Wade will finish his run with Wednesday’s game at the Brooklyn Nets and, like his former teammate and good friend LeBron James, have to watch the postseason from home.

‘Tense situation’: North Korea convenes top-level meeting

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called a full meeting of a top committee of the ruling Workers’ Party to address what he described as the “prevailing tense situation”, state media reported.

The gathering of the Central Committee comes after Kim’s Hanoi summit with US President Donald Trump broke up without agreement in February, and as South Korean President Moon Jae-in flies to Washington for talks with the US leader.

But the North’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) appeared to indicate that Kim may be focussing on Pyongyang’s continued push to develop its economy.

In a meeting with senior officials on Tuesday, the North Korean leader ordered them to display “an attitude befitting the masters of the revolution and construction under the prevailing tense situation and thus follow through on the new strategic line of the Party”, KCNA reported.

Last April, Kim declared that the ruling party’s “new strategic line” would be “socialist economic construction” and its quest for nuclear development was complete.

Kim made “a deep analysis of the matters pending urgent solution in the party and state”, KCNA said, adding that at Wednesday’s meeting the central committee will “decide the new orientation and ways of struggle in line with the need of the prevailing revolutionary situation”.

The meeting also comes ahead of the opening of the country’s rubber stamp legislature on Thursday.

It would be difficult for Kim to lay out a new policy direction while Trump continues to express a willingness to maintain dialogue, according to Cheong Seong-chang, an analyst at the Sejong Institute.

Party reshuffle

Instead, Wednesday’s meeting could involve a reshuffle of party officials including Kim Yong Chol, the North’s top envoy for talks with the US, who has been “blamed the most for the failure of the Hanoi summit”, he said.

“It would signal a green light if he is replaced with a more flexible and practical figure, but if he stays, denuclearisation talks won’t be easy,” said Cheong.

Trump and Kim held their first landmark summit in Singapore last June, where the North Korean leader signed a vaguely worded deal on the “denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula”.

But the failure by the pair to reach agreement at their second summit in Hanoi – which broke up without even a joint statement – raised questions over the future of the wider process.

A senior Pyongyang diplomat told reporters last month that the North was considering suspending nuclear talks with the US.

Why did the Trump-Kim summit break down?

Wreckage of ‘crashed’ Japanese stealth fighter jet found

Wreckage of 'crashed' Japanese stealth fighter jet found
A Japan Coast Guard vessel and a US military aircraft conduct rescue and search operations for the crashed jet [Kyodo/Reuters]

Wreckage from a Japanese F-35A stealth fighter jet has been found a day after it disappeared off the radar over the Pacific.

There was no word yet on the fate of the pilot on board, Defence Minister Takeshi Iwaya said on Wednesday.

“We have collected part of its tail” in search operations at sea with planes and vessels, Iwaya told reporters, before adding: “We believe it crashed”.

The fighter jet went missing around 7:30 pm (1030 GMT) on Tuesday as it was flying on a training mission around 135km east of Misawa, northeastern Japan, on a training mission.

The plane lost contact about 30 minutes after taking off from Misawa Air Base with three other aircraft.

“I would like to apologise to local residents for having caused concerns to them,” said Iwaya. “We will do our best to rescue the missing pilot.”

Japan is deploying F-35As, each of which costs more than 10 billion yen ($90m), to replace the ageing F-4 fighter jet.

The jet was one of 13 F-35s deployed at the base, according to a defence official.

The remaining 12 F-35A fighters have been grounded for the time being, according to the defence ministry.

Dwyane Wade Drops 30 as Heat Honor Star in Final Home Game, Beat 76ers

MIAMI, FL - APRIL 9: Actress, Gabrielle Union, and Dwyane Wade #3 of the Miami Heat pose for a photo with their daughter, Kaavia Wade, prior to a game against the Philadelphia 76ers on April 9, 2019 at American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida. All day, fans shed tears in response to the touching tributes across social media. When night fell, AmericanAirlines Arena was filled with the most energy since championship trophies were last hoisted. There were video tributes, raucous cheers, No. 3s all over the building and even on the bench.

It was as close to a storybook atmosphere as you can get without a title.

All Dwyane Wade needed was a win to make it perfect.

He and his Miami Heat teammates got the job done. Wade scored 30 points and Bam Adebayo added 19 as the Heat earned a 122-99 win over the Philadelphia 76ers

Despite the victory, the Heat were eliminated from playoff contention when the Detroit Pistons defeated the Memphis Grizzlies. It’s unclear if Wade will play Wednesday night in Brooklyn.

If this was his last game, Wade got the sendoff of a lifetime.

The Heat played to the energy of the crowd the entire night, opening their first set with a pin-down designed to get Wade a wide-open dunk down the middle of the floor. The Sixers, who are locked into the East’s No. 3 seed and had little to play for, gave little resistance on the opening possession—or much of the night, for that matter.

Miami carried a 19-point lead into the halftime break, and the Sixers never came close to making it a game. Philly shot just 40.8 percent from the floor, including a ghastly 5-of-25 performance from beyond the arc. Joel Embiid and JJ Redick both sat for load-management purposes.

Ben Simmons finished with 16 points in 21 minutes. Zhaire Smith was the only Sixers starter who played more than 21 minutes as the team geared up for the postseason.

It seemed everyone from the fans to his Heat teammates to the Sixers themselves recognized the night was all about Wade. The game tipped well after its scheduled 7:30 p.m. ET start as the Heat honored the shooting guard with a lengthy video package. The first part was narrated by Shaquille O’Neal, the second by LeBron James and the third by his wife Gabrielle Union, teammate Udonis Haslem and Heat president Pat Riley.

“No matter what narratives lie ahead,” Riley said in the package, “know this city will always be proud to rep your name across its backs. Because this is, and forever will be, Wade County.”

The video finished with Wade’s son, Zaire, recreating his father’s legendary 2007 Converse commercial.

“Man, you’re going to make me cry before this game,” Wade told the crowd. “Man, I love you guys. I’m thankful for this moment. I’m thankful for this entire season.”

“I thank you guys for dancing with me this year. I thank you guys for your patience this year. I thank you for all your love, and for you having my back this year. I’ve got some brothers that will always be my brothers. I love you guys.”

Special words for @DwyaneWade from @BarackObama! https://t.co/GADfeq4jT6

More video tributes followed, with names ranging from Barack Obama to Derek Jeter participating. At halftime, fans were treated to a video package released by Budweiser that featured Wade being presented items by his mother, among others, saying how he’s touched their lives off the court.

“I am more proud of the man you have become, than the basketball player,” Jolinda Wade said in the video. “You are bigger than basketball.”

On the court, Wade seemed like a man who still had two or three years left. His 30 points came on 10-of-23 shooting, and he knocked down four three-pointers. Every time it seemed like he was running out of gas, he’d hit a shot and AmericanAirlines Arena would explode, giving him and the team energy to go on another run.

The night concluded as it should have: with one final jersey swap. This one was with Zaire, who handed him a No. 2 Heat jersey with his name on the back—a fitting moment as Father Prime ends his basketball career to go home and be a full-time father.

Amnesty: Lowest number of prisoners executed in 2018

At least 690 prisoners were executed in 20 countries in 2018, marking a 31 percent fall from at least 993 from the previous year, according to Amnesty International that reported the fewest deaths by capital punishment in at least a decade.

A total of 2,531 death sentences were also imposed in 54 countries last year, decreasing from 2,591 recorded worldwide in 2017 according to a report published on Wednesday by the UK-based rights group that hailed the significant decline in global executions.

As in previous years, China, where figures believed to be in the thousands are classified as a state secret, remained the most prolific executor, Amnesty said, followed by Iran, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and Iraq – accounting for 78 percent of total reported executions.

“It’s very encouraging that known executions were the lowest at the end of 2018, but it is challenging to define clear reasons for the decreases and whether these reductions will be sustained in the coming years,” Oluwatosin Popoola, Amnesty International adviser on the death penalty, told Al Jazeera.

Executions in Iran dropped by 50 percent in 2018 following amendments to drug legislation that increased the minimum amounts of drugs for death penalty offences. The change meant executions were put on hold while cases were reviewed.

Iraq, which executed at least 52 people, and Pakistan, which put more than 14 to death, also showed a downward trend. Meanwhile, Somalia almost halved its executions from 24 in 2017 to 13 last year.

Amnesty’s report comes after London-based NGO Harm Reduction International (HRI) revealed a drop of 68 percent in executions worldwide for drug crimes from 288 to 91 in 2018.

Popoola said that “while the global figures of executions undoubtedly tell a positive story for 2018, there were also concerning developments which show that it’s not yet time to lift the pressure”.

“The death penalty continued to be used in many cases against international law and standards in the absence of a fair trial and for non-lethal crimes such as drug-related offences,” he said.

Amnesty found increases in executions in Japan, Singapore, South Sudan, Belarus and the United States.

Methods of recorded executions included beheading in Saudi Arabia, electrocution in the US, and hanging, lethal injection and shooting in other countries.

Calls for reform in Pakistan

Following a 77 percent decline in executions, Pakistan was not ranked among the top five executing countries for the first time in four years.

While the “dramatic decrease in executions is heartening to see”, Pakistan was “far from structural reform”, according to Sarah Belal, executive director of rights group Justice Project Pakistan (JPP).

“This drop in executions cannot be taken as a correction to Pakistan’s abhorrent history of handing out death sentences and executing the mentally ill, juveniles and those wrongfully convicted,” said Belal.

According to Amnesty’s report, at least 250 people were sentenced to death in Pakistan – a 25 percent increase from 2017.

With more than 4,600 awaiting execution, according to data received by JPP, Pakistan has one of the world’s largest death row population.

In a high profile case last year, Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman, was acquitted of blasphemy and released from prison after eight years on death row.

The Supreme Court verdict in October sparked days of protests by far-right religious groups, death threats and chaos across the country.

JPP’s Belal said the landmark case not only sets a good precedent, but is also an “indictment of Pakistan’s disproportionate use of the death penalty against the most vulnerable”.

Pakistani protesters burn a poster image of Christian woman Aasia Bibi in Hyderabad, Pakistan [File: Pervez Masih/AP]

She said her organisation is working with the new government to reform the process of filing a mercy petition and reducing the number of offenses punishable by death – currently at 33 – among other things.

‘Closer to abolition’

Meanwhile, steps towards abolition were taken by many countries last year, Amnesty said.

In June, Burkina Faso abolished the death penalty for ordinary crimes, while both The Gambia and Malaysia declared an official moratorium on executions.

No executions were reported in Bahrain, Bangladesh, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Palestine and the United Arab Emirates.

In December, a record high of 121 countries at the United Nations General Assembly voted in favour of establishing a moratorium on executions with a view to abolish the punishment.

Like 2017, the total number of countries that had abolished the death penalty in law for all crimes stood at 106 by the end of the year.

“Only a minority of countries in the world actively use the death penalty today, so we are closer to the complete and global abolition of the death penalty, more than ever before,” added Amnesty’s Popoola.

But with more than 19,000 prisoners still on death row around the world, Popoola said more was needed to end the “ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment which has no place in the 21st century”.

“We cannot afford to rest on our laurels, but continue to call on countries that use the death penalty to abolish this punishment.”

Boeing to fix deadly 737 Max software, but is that enough for passengers?

All of Southwest Airlines' Boeing 737 MAX aircraft are grounded.

By Sasha Lekach

Boeing, the American aircraft maker of the 737 Max 8 planes involved in two fatal crashes in a five-month period, is hustling to salvage its reputation so passengers and air carriers will fly on those planes again. (Out of all U.S.-based carriers, Southwest and American Airlines had the largest number of the planes in their fleets.)

The company has even paid for its side of the story to appear at the top of Google searches — above critical news articles about the aircraft. The paid Google ads direct users to a statement promising an upcoming software update which would fix issues with the plane’s flight control system, known as the MCAS, or maneuvering characteristics augmentation system.

“When the MAX returns to the skies with the software changes to the MCAS function, it will be among the safest airplanes ever to fly,” CEO Dennis Muilenburg said in the statement, which was released late last week along with a video message.

But will anyone want to fly them at that point? According to one business law expert, signs point to yes  — even if the plane’s reputation is currently in the gutter.

On Friday, another software problem surfaced, so even more certifications and safety checks will slow down the planes’ eventual return. The 737 Max 8 was involved in the recent Ethiopian Airlines and Lion Air crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia, respectively. Ethiopian Airlines claims its pilots followed all procedures to right the plane that was miscalculating its positioning and pulling the nose downward; Boeing agrees.

The earliest the planes are expected to return to the air is June — that’s when American Airlines says it’ll resume its 90 daily Max flights, once Boeing’s changes are approved.

Consumers’ sour feelings toward the 737 Max may fade soon enough, though, Thomas Cooke, a professor at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business, who has expertise in business law, said on a call this week. Consumer sentiment is hard to predict here, but once the appropriate agencies say the planes are fly-worthy again (as the Max series was labeled before the crashes), “the issue will be short-lived,” he said.

SEE ALSO: Trump grounds Boeing 737 Max planes after fatal crashes

Cooke thinks passengers will be more cognizant of what type of plane they’re booking for a few months, and they’ll be more hesitant if a Max 8 plane is on their itinerary. But eventually those concerns will fade, and other factors like price, convenience, and the need for summer travel plans will overpower any lingering worries.

For comparison, look at safety issues at Chipotle. Food-borne illnesses nearly destroyed the fast-food restaurant’s customer base a few years ago, but with all the scrutiny and regulatory oversight required to clean up their food process, Chipotle became known as one of the safer establishments. Boeing is seeking this same outcome — and it usually works, at least psychologically. Cooke said students he’s spoken to assume the planes will be safest after all the re-testing and computer fixes.

As for Boeing’s reputation, the company is trying to be as transparent as possible, offering a steady stream of updates and owning up to problems instead of blaming pilots, airlines, regulators, or anyone else.

“We’ve got so much confidence in this industry,” Cooke said of the average air traveler.

The airplane maker hopes these two planes crashes won’t keep us scared to fly the Max for too much longer.

Magic Johnson Announces He Will Step Down as Lakers Pres. of Basketball Ops.

FILE - In this Tuesday, June 26, 2018 file photo,Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations, Earvin

Damian Dovarganes/Associated Press

Magic Johnson announced Tuesday he is stepping down from his role as the Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations, per Bill Oram of The Athletic.

He discussed his decision with reporters in a surprise press conference:

NBA TV @NBATV

BREAKING: Magic Johnson has stepped down as Lakers’ President of Basketball Operations. https://t.co/yrHkguOO02

“I think that with [team owner Jeanie Buss] and I, I want to always preserve our relationship with her,” Johnson said, per Oram. “And I think I had more fun when I was able to the be big brother and ambassador.”

“(Jeanie) doesn’t know I’m standing here,” he said of Buss, per Dave McMenamin of ESPN.

“Somebody’s going to have to tell my boss because I knew I couldn’t be face-to-face and tell her,” he said, per Oram. “…I couldn’t stand to tell her.”

The Hall of Famer returned to the Lakers in an executive role in February 2017, replacing Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss in the front office.

However, there have been questions about his commitment to the role in the past two years:

Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn

Since taking over as president of the Lakers, Magic Johnson never fully committed to the job. Often he was traveling and away from the team. His office hours were limited. He didn’t do a lot of scouting. Running an NBA team takes a tremendous commitment of time and energy.

Oram reported earlier in the day that Johnson is “seen as an absentee executive,” while Ramona Shelburne of ESPN said on The Jump he hasn’t spoken to head coach Luke Walton in “weeks.”

Johnson also lamented his inability to speak to other players around the league:

Chris Haynes @ChrisBHaynes

Magic Johnson says he likes to be free to congratulate players such as Russell Westbrook when he hit the 20–20-20 mark. Says he couldn’t be himself and he hasn’t informed Jeanie Buss yet.

He has been fined multiple times for tampering, including comments on Paul George and more recently Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Meanwhile, the Lakers haven’t tangibly improved under his leadership, as they missed the playoffs for the sixth straight season. He signed LeBron James in free agency, but he was unable to surround him with other stars.

Johnson’s departure could cause a ripple effect throughout the organization:

Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn

Lakers coaching staff fully expected to be fired in hours after the final game of the season. They had believed they were gone for months. Now? Magic quits in public, saying he’s too scared to tell Jeanie Buss face-to-face. What an embarrassing episode for a historic franchise.

Los Angeles will now have to find a new direction before an important offseason.

Nielsen: Acting DHS Deputy Grady offers resignation

Claire Grady

Under Secretary of Homeland Security Claire Grady’s resignation comes amid a broader homeland security staff shakeup pushed by White House senior adviser Stephen Miller. | Kenzo Tribouillard/AFP/Getty Images

Claire Grady, the acting Homeland Security Department deputy secretary, has offered to resign, according to outgoing Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

“Acting Deputy Secretary Claire Grady has offered the President her resignation, effective tomorrow,” Nielsen tweeted Tuesday evening. “For the last two years, Claire has served @DHSgov w excellence and distinction. She has been an invaluable asset to DHS – a steady force and a knowledgeable voice.”

Story Continued Below

The resignation comes amid a broader Homeland Security staff shakeup pushed by White House senior adviser Stephen Miller. President Donald Trump on Sunday announced that Nielsen would step down from her post. Days before, the White House pulled its nominee to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with Trump pledging to go in a “tougher direction.”

When Trump announced Nielsen’s departure, he also tapped Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan to become acting DHS secretary, a move that has raised legal questions. Grady, the undersecretary for management and acting deputy, was next in the department’s line of succession, as outlined in federal law.

Miller has pressed to remove other immigration officials in recent days, including U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Francis Cissna and General Counsel John Mitnick, although hard-line immigration groups have rallied around Cissna.

Grady is a career civil servant with nearly three decades of experience at DHS and the Defense Department.

In written testimony for a June 2017 confirmation hearing, she stressed her management experience and said she would strive to deliver “maximum value for every dollar entrusted to the department.”

DHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
