Zion Williamson Wins 2019 Wooden Award over Ja Morant, RJ Barrett, More

Duke star freshman Zion Williamson has been named the 2019 Wooden Award winner as the top player in college basketball.

The forward topped a competitive field of candidates, including teammate RJ Barrett, Murray State guard Ja Morant, Tennessee forward Grant Williams and Texas Tech guard Jarrett Culver.

Williamson was the biggest story of 2018-19 in college basketball, coming into the year with tons of hype as a viral dunking star before showcasing his all-around skill set throughout the season.

He finished the regular season averaging 21.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.8 blocks per game, also ranking among the best in the nation with a 68.3 field-goal percentage.

His player efficiency rating of 40.83 not only led the country, but it was also the best for at least the past decade, per Basketball Reference.

At 6’7″, 285 pounds with elite athleticism, the freshman is an impossible matchup for anyone at this level but he also showed that he can contribute in a number of ways.

This allowed him to become the third player in ACC history to be named both Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year in the same season.

This was despite suffering a knee injury down the stretch, missing most of the final six games of the year. Duke was just 3-3 without him, including the first game against North Carolina when he went down in the first minute of the game.

He returned for the postseason, helping Duke win the ACC tournament and reach the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament while averaging 26.4 points over seven games.

Williamson could end up being the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NBA draft, but before that, he was honored as the top player in college basketball and one of the best we have seen in years.

The reveal of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker literally broke the internet.

About one or two minutes after the first trailer for Star Wars Episode IX hit the internet, Twitter went down, giving desktop users who tried to use the site at all an error page. On mobile, the app was not updating at all for roughly one minute.

The error page displayed by Twitter after the 'Star Wars' trailer dropped.

We reached out to Twitter for comment and the company did not immediately respond to our question about why Twitter went down, so we don’t know for sure if Star Wars did it, but it would be quite the coincidence if a major traffic increase from Star Wars fans didn’t cause the problem.

After Twitter was back in action, the flood of Star Wars tweets were pouring in.

TWITTER IS BREAKING BC OF STAR WARS KSJDJD

— mari 2 (@hemsthorth) April 12, 2019

People adored the trailer shown at the Star Wars Celebration and fans were happy to see some of their favorite characters back in action after a year and a half of silence.

goddamnit JJ is so good at trailers

— BenDavid Grabinski (@bdgrabinski) April 12, 2019

People loved the new droid D-O that made its debut on-stage, obviously, and the emotions that ran through the trailer were palpable.

“No one’s ever really gone.” I am so emotional and happy and excited right now, you guys. #EpisodeIX

— Kathy Paz (@kathypaz) April 12, 2019

Fans particularly took to the mysterious laugh at the end of the trailer, which seems to have emanated form none other than Palpatine, seemingly confirmed by the actor behind the legendary villain Ian McDiarmid coming out to tell everyone to play the trailer again.

The Rise of Skywalker marks the end of the Skywalker saga, and many fans are paying tribute by looking back at the rest of the series.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will land in theaters Dec. 20.

Tiger Woods 1 Shot Back After Shooting 4-Under 68 in Round 2 of 2019 Masters

Tiger Woods finds himself in serious contention for his first major championship since 2008 after shooting a four-under 68 in the second round of the 2019 Masters tournament Friday at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.

Woods, whose six under overall score leaves him in one shot off the lead in a tie for sixth place, tallied six birdies and two bogeys in Round 2. Francesco Molinari, Jason Day, Brooks Koepka, Adam Scott and Louis Oosthuizen are tied atop the leaderboard at seven under.

The four-time Masters champion captured his most recent green jacket in 2005.

https://t.co/YtaM6F8U6r

You could make a reasonable argument that Woods could be entering the weekend as the clear-cut leader if his short- and medium-range putting were even average compared to his previously high standards.

The 43-year-old Stanford product has made a bad habit of missing makable putts in recent events, and it’s been a major problem so far in the Masters. In particular, his failure to sink back-to-back birdie attempts on the 12th and 13th holes prevented him from making an ever bigger back-nine charge.

CBS Sports @CBSSports

It’s a fist pump for Tiger at the Masters.

A birdie on the 9th hole brings him right back to -3. https://t.co/O4ggZSMDoX

Woods said Tuesday he’s no longer able to put himself through the long practice sessions from his prime, during which he’d work out the issues in his game, and that’s a factor in his putting woes.

“The hardest part is I just can’t practice like I used to,” he told reporters. “My back gets sore. I just can’t log the time that I used to, and that goes with every part of my game. … I’ve worked on my putting, and when I have, I’ve putted well.”

Nevertheless, it’s jarring to see him miss putts that would have been considered gimmes while he was busy collecting his 14 major titles.

Masters Tournament @TheMasters

With a birdie on No. 11, Tiger Woods moves to four under par.

#themasters https://t.co/kfH5uh0NTh

The situation is made more interesting by the fact that he made a series of long-range putts Friday to help him keep pace near the top of the leaderboard. His birdie putts on Nos. 9, 14 and 15 were perfectly read and made up for some of the short misses.

CBS Sports @CBSSports

On the 14th hole, Tiger Woods’ drive found the second cut. Then, a security guard made contact with Tiger’s ankle after his approach through the trees.

Woods STILL made birdie. https://t.co/zjugFDbTOn

Tiger is still a legitimate threat heading into the weekend because the other facets of his game have been mostly solid. He appears to be more confident with the driver in his hands than he has at just about any other time since his successful comeback began in late 2017.

ESPN @espn

Tiger almost got taken out by the security guard 😯 https://t.co/wUpiuwLHln

The biggest key over the next two days—beyond cleaning up his close-range work on the greens—will be taking better advantage of the par fives.

Woods played those four critical holes at even par Friday. He didn’t give himself any good looks for eagle. Instead, he was mostly scrambling and forced to attempt mid-range looks for birdie at best, and he only converted one of them.

Colin Cowherd @ColinCowherd

Remarkable what Tiger does for golf. Can’t take my eyes off him when he’s playing well. Crowd clearly pulling for him. And he’s playing w a ton of confidence now. Fun to watch. #masters2019

Yet, despite the putting concerns and the fact that he didn’t capitalize on the par fives, he’s put himself with many of golf’s biggest names on a star-studded leaderboard through 36 holes.

That’s reason for optimism for the greatest closer the sport’s ever seen.

Adam Silver: NBA to Debate Shorter Games, In-Season Tournaments, Load Management

CHARLOTTE, NC - FEBRUARY 16: NBA Commissioner Adam Silver speaks at the All Star Breakfast held by the National Basketball Retired Players Association at the Renaissance Charlotte Suites Hotel on February 16, 2019 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by John McCoy/Getty Images)

John McCoy/Getty Images

The NBA has seen a few sizable changes in Commissioner Adam Silver‘s era, including a revamp of the All-Star Game and draft-lottery formats.

However, Silver told reporters that the Association is exploring more seismic changes, including reducing games from 48 to 40 minutes and adding an in-season tournament.

Journalist Mark Woods reported Silver’s comments:

Mark Woods @markbritball

Adam Silver says NBA is “looking at” various new formats including reducing games to 40 mins, in-season tournaments, etc. with a view to load management that’s closer to football’s rotation of line-ups depending on each game.

Mark Woods @markbritball

Silver says there would need to be a long-term cultural shift in the US to introduce NBA mid-season tournament (like a FA Cup) but open to look at “best way to put the season together” even if current format has been around for 50 years. “Will require a great deal more research”

Tim Bontemps of ESPN followed up on the midseason tournament comments:

Tim Bontemps @TimBontemps

Biggest takeaway from Adam Silver’s press conference: he’s clearly intrigued by the prospect of a mid season tournament. Obviously isn’t something that will happen immediately, but the idea has momentum.

The 40-minute game idea may seem radical, but it’s been discussed before.

Zach Lowe of ESPN (then of Grantland) reported the following on Sept. 10, 2013:

Several sources around the league, both at the highest team levels and within the league office, say commissioner-in-waiting Adam Silver has signaled a desire to at least discuss moving to 40-minute games. About two years ago, Silver informally polled all 30 league general managers on the notion of cutting overtime from five to three minutes, per several GMs who remember the poll.”

Lowe provided two “immediate sources of appeal” for a switch to 40-minutes: the aligning of NBA and FIBA rules and the creation of a more unpredictable and entertaining product.

However, Lowe also provided some interesting counterpoints: Namely, coaches may still rely on their starters to play the same amount of minutes, significantly decreasing the bench’s impact. That, in turn, could lead to a drop in reserve’s salaries given their lessened responsibilities.

But Lowe also posited that the number of games should be discussed before the number of minutes: “In the short run, there are lots of folks in the league who would prefer tackling 82 games before tackling 48 minutes,” he wrote.

That’s an astute point, and tying things altogether, the league could conceivably add a midseason tournament and reduce the amount of regular-season court time (via games, not minutes) simultaneously.

The league could shorten the amount of regular-season games (say from 82 to 72) and replace the missing action and revenue with a midseason All-Star tournament where players can pick their own sides.

The games could be played at a central location (let’s say Las Vegas). Teams could play shorter round-robin games before a knockout tournament, somewhat like the current Las Vegas Summer League format. The tournament could also build a ton of fan interest, especially if fans can bet on the games.

Of course, that idea likely won’t happen, but stars are still resting despite a decrease in back-to-backs. Eventually, something must be done.

Saudis ‘gave Libya’s Haftar millions of dollars before offensive’

Days before Libya‘s renegade General Khalifa Haftar launched an offensive on the country’s capital, Tripoli, Saudi Arabia offered tens of millions of dollars to help pay for the operation, the Wall Street Journal has reported.

The offer came during a visit by Haftar to the Saudi capital, Riyadh, in the run-up to his April 4 military campaign, the Journal said on Friday.

Citing senior advisers to the Saudi government, the Journal said the offer of funds – accepted by Haftar – was intended to buy the loyalty of tribal leaders, recruit and pay fighters, and other military purposes.

“We were quite generous,” one of the unnamed advisers told the Journal.

The latest conflict in the North African country pits Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) against forces allied to the United Nations-backed Government of National Accord (GNA).

The GNA controls Tripoli, situated in northwestern Libya, while the LNA is allied to a parallel administration based in the east of the oil-rich country, which splintered into a patchwork of competing power bases following the overthrow of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Libya crisis: Fighting concerns Tripoli residents (2:18)

The United Nations, which had hoped to organise a national conference this month bringing the rival eastern and western administrations together to organise an election, has called for a ceasefire. The United States, G7 bloc of wealthy nations and European Union have also urged the LNA to halt its offensive.

According to the latest UN figures, at least 75 people have been killed in the fighting between the warring parties while 320 others were wounded. Some 9,500 people have also been forced from their homes.

Warplanes over Tripoli

Khalil Jahshan, the executive director of the Arab Center of Washington, DC, said Haftar’s backers and supporters were well known before the publication of the Journal’s article.

Several Middle Eastern countries including Egypt and the United Arab Emirates have backed Hafter as a bulwark against Islamist groups, notably the Muslim Brotherhood, who took a prominent role in Libya following the 2011 uprising and continued to participate in Libyan politics under the Tripoli government.

“There was an increase in support, clearly, but not a change in the political role. I think Saudi Arabia wanted to up its participation in the conflict in Libya and that probably contributed to the visit of General Haftar to the kingdom and his meeting with both King Salman and the Crown Prince,” Jahshan said.

“Immediately after his [Haftar’s] return, he kind of escalated his role, his confrontation with his competitors in Libya so clearly he got the political endorsement first and I’m sure he got the financial and military support afterwards even though this is not necessarily the only party in the Gulf or in the Middle East that has been supportive of Haftar over the past few years.”

During his visit to Saudi Arabia prior to the offensive on Tripoli, the Journal said Haftar met King Salman as well as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as well as kingdom’s intelligence chief and foreign minister.

The Saudi government and spokespeople for Haftar did not respond to requests for comment.

Meanwhile, at least five civilians were killed on the outskirts of Tripoli on Friday when rockets and shells fired by forces loyal to Haftar hit a residential area.

Al Jazeera’s Mahmoud Abdelwahed, reporting from Tripoli, said Haftar’s forces had launched several air raids in western Libya.

“Haftar’s warplanes have been intensifying airstrikes in the west of the country and staff members in Mitiga airport – the only operational airport in the Tripoli – say that there is a state of panic among staff members and passengers,” he said, adding that anti-aircraft weapons at the airport were trying to target the warplanes.

“Fighting decreased relatively on Friday compared to the last two or three days but sources at the GNA say that the government forces managed to recapture sites that were taken over by Haftar’s forces days ago,” Abdelwahed said.

More than 1,000 people also gathered in central Tripoli to demand Haftar stop the advance on the coastal city of about 1.2 million people.

Pakistanis form human image of Christchurch mosque

The tribute was organised by the Muslim Institute [Muslim Institute/AFP]

Thousands of Pakistanis clad in white have gathered in the central city of Jhang to make a human image of New Zealand‘s Al Noor mosque in Christchurch city, where 50 people were killed by a white supremacist four weeks ago.

Drone images showed worshippers standing in formation on Friday, their snow-white traditional shalwar kameez and prayer caps in stark contrast to the emerald green of a public field, as a second group formed the words “Islam is peace” nearby.

Huge New Zealand and Pakistani flags were also displayed along with a giant banner which read: “Solidarity with the martyrs of Christchurch from Pakistan”.

The tribute was organised by the Muslim Institute, a non-government organisation aimed at promoting peace and stability in the Muslim world, which also released the drone footage.

Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian and self-avowed white supremacist, has been charged with 50 counts of murder and 39 of attempted murder after opening fire at the Linwood and Al Noor mosques on March 15.

Pakistani victims

Nine of the victims were of Pakistani origin. One, Naeem Rashid, was posthumously given an award for bravery by Pakistan after he apparently tried to tackle the gunman before being shot.

Tribute organisers praised the New Zealand government after what had been a “very tough time” for Muslims in the country – especially Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Her response “not only soothed the wounds of Muslims but also assured them that Muslims in their country are safe”, said Sahibzada Sultan Ahmad Ali, a religious scholar and one of the organisers.

“We worked really hard to make this model,” one participant, Noor Hassan, said of the tribute. “It was so pleasant that we were ready to stand like this for the whole day.”

First Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Trailer Teases A Shocking Return

Lucasfilm

After more than 40 years, the wait is over. The annual Star Wars fan convention, Star Wars Celebration, officially kicked off in Chicago on Friday (April 12) with the anticipated first look at J.J. Abrams’s Star Wars: Episode IX, now formally titled Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Picking up “some time” after the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi — in which the Resistance suffered significant losses against the First Order — The Rise of Skywalker finds Rey, Finn, Poe, and company embarking on an adventure together. What that journey entails is still somewhat unclear, but the teaser does offer us a clue in its final moments, as our heroes gaze out at what appears to be the wreckage of the Death Star.

“No one’s ever really gone,” the voice of Luke Skywalker says before the clip ends with Supreme Chancellor Palpatine’s evil laugh. Actor Ian McDiarmid confirmed Palpatine’s shocking return by appearing on the Celebration stage moments after.

The trailer also features a dazzling opening sequence of Rey using her Force powers — Luke’s lightsaber in hand — to jump over a TIE fighter in what looks like a showdown with Kylo Ren, who’s sadly back in his emo phase and wearing the helmet he previously destroyed in Episode VIII. (Let those locks flow, Kylo!) Billy Dee Williams made his grand return to the franchise, too, reprising the role of that smooth-talking scoundrel Lando Calrissian. Asked what it was like to play the character again decades later, Williams said in earnest, “Lando never left me.”

While Abrams and the cast couldn’t reveal too much about the film during the panel — though, moderator and Star Wars superfan Stephen Colbert tried his best — we did learn a few morsels of information, like the fact that (unfortunately) Kylo Ren will not appear partially shirtless in this flick. On a more serious note, Abrams also opened up about the inclusion of the late Carrie Fisher in the film. The teaser shows a tender scene between General Leia and Rey, and according to Abrams, Fisher’s scenes in Episode IX are actually unused footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

“The weird miracle of having had a number of scenes from The Force Awakens that hadn’t been used was that we could use those scenes to continue her story so that it would be her,” he said. “The crazy thing is how not crazy it feels because she is there in these scenes. Leia lives in this film in a way that is kind of mind-blowing to me.”

Abrams confirmed that they’re still editing and doing visual effects on the film, but the use of practical effects — as seen in The Force Awakens — is still integral to the heart of the storytelling. In fact, a small new droid by the name of DO (D-O? Dio?) made its debut on stage. DO can be seen in the teaser alongside its buddy BB-8:

Lucasfilm

“The thing I think about all the time is the responsibility we have,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said during the panel. “It’s something we talk about every minute while we’re making these movies.” Though, for Episode IX — the final chapter in the beloved Skywalker saga — the enormity of the moment, and the desire to stay true to George Lucas’s vision while adding even more depth for modern audiences, was felt by everyone. It’s truly the end of an era.

But first, let’s watch Rey jump over that TIE fighter again.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters December 20, 2019.
