The Washington Wizards announced they won’t make a qualifying contract offer to small forward Devin Robinson after he was reportedly arrested Saturday morning.

“We are aware of the incident this morning involving Devin and are disappointed in his actions. We will not extend a qualifying offer to him for the 2019-20 season,” the team said in a statement.

According to Candace Buckner of the Washington Post, Robinson and Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Jalen Mills allegedly got into a fight at the Opera Ultra Lounge in Washington, D.C.

Fred Katz of The Athletic first reported that Robinson had been arrested.

The 24-year-old University of Florida product made seven appearances for the Wizards during the 2018-19 season, which was his second straight year operating under a two-way contract. He went undrafted in 2017 before joining the Wizards organization.

He averaged 6.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per game while shooting 59.4 percent in his limited action at the NBA level this season. He was more involved in 22 games for the Capital City Go-Go of the G League, putting up 19.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.

In February, Robinson told Stephen Ruiz of the Orlando Sentinel he felt his all-around game had made serious strides since his collegiate days with the Gators.

“I feel like if [fans] see me now, they’re like, ‘That boy is totally different than what he was at Florida,’” he said. “‘This kid is more aggressive. He has that dog in him. More confident. His overall game, he doesn’t put himself in a box and get frustrated over little things that he does or dwell on the past.’”

Washington’s decision means Robinson will become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.

Taylor Swift and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ both have plans for April 26

Taylor Swift is coming for Thanos.

By Nicole Gallucci

As every entertainment, movie, and Marvel comic fan must certainly know by now, April 26, 2019 — the day the highly-anticipated film, Avengers: Endgame, hits theaters — is sacred.

It’s the day many people will hold their pee to sit in a movie theater for more then three hours so they can probably (almost definitely) watch Captain America die, learn if Thanos will finally be defeated, and see if our beloved fallen heroes will be brought back to life. But Taylor Swift doesn’t seem to care.

On Thursday night the singer launched a mysterious countdown clock on her website and social media accounts that sent fans spiraling. It’s unlabeled, so it could signal a new project, an announcement, or new music for all we know, but the countdown has the nerve to end on the already hyped Avengers: Endgame day.

How much can we be expected to handle, Taylor?! We’re only human.

While it would be fun if Taylor was so excited about seeing Avengers: Endgame that she made a countdown clock, as I’m sure others have done, all signs point to her dropping new music that day.

She’s changed her social media profile pictures to a soothing pastel, watercolor paint-esque picture, and also tweeted the following photograph alongside the date.

The color pink, along with rainbows, butterflies, and sparkles are definitely a change from Swift’s badass Reputation build-up, but it seems she’s been creating a running theme on her Instagram account leading up to whatever the drop will be.

Taylor's planning something.

Image: screengrab/instagram

Since she and the Marvel Universe do share quite the overlapping fanbase, though, a bunch of people are now overwhelmed with all this stacked April 26 news.

I can’t believe I’m going to have to spend 3 hours of New Taylor Swift Music Day stuck in a movie theater watching Avengers instead of listening to new Taylor Swift music on repeat

— Katie Minard (@KatieMinard) April 13, 2019

I’ll probably watch avengers: endgame on april 26th and like I’m leaving the movie theater crying but suddenly feel better with taylor swift’s new album.😋😌 pic.twitter.com/9GdxKSuYfo

While people are trying to be logical here, the fact that Taylor Swift has a song titled “Endgame” and the Avengers movie is literally called “Endgame” is really too perfect to ignore.

Does Taylor make an appearance in the movie? Does the song? Is she the one who defeats Thanos? Gah, so much to consider.

Taylor Swift has a song called End Game

The last Avengers movie is called Endgame

Kevin Durant Wanted to Be with Warriors ‘So Bad, I Didn’t Give a F–k’

LOS ANGELES, CA - APRIL 4: Kevin Durant (35) of the Golden State Warriors looks to pass the ball during a game against the Los Angeles Lakers on April 4, 2019 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California. Golden State Warriors superstar forward Kevin Durant said he knew there would be backlash for signing with the Dubs as a free agent in 2016, but the upside of joining an already loaded roster alongside Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green far outweighed the potential negatives.

On Saturday, Michael Lee of The Athletic provided comments from Durant as the Warriors prepare to begin their playoff quest toward a third consecutive NBA championship.

“I came here knowing for a fact, that every media member, every fan was going to call me every name in the book for however long I was here and I was going to take the brunt of everything. I knew coming here,” he said. “But I wanted to be a part of this so bad, I didn’t give a f–k. Same with LeBron [James]. He took all of that heat, no matter what.”

The 30-year-old University of Texas product added the decision to join Golden State said the “spirit of the game” played a much bigger role in his choice than the potential for individual accolades.

“Not the spotlight or the fame that comes from being the best player. Not the legacy. I swear on my life, that don’t mean nothing to me,” Durant told Lee. “How I build myself up in this NBA life, it doesn’t mean anything to me. I just want to play great basketball every second I’m on the court, and that was a perfect opportunity for me to do so.”

Nevertheless, the two titles and a pair of NBA Finals MVP Awards have at least allowed Durant to move closer to entering the same realm as James in the conversation for best player of the current generation, and it could make him a factor in the “greatest of all time” discussion when his career ends.

The 10-time All-Star selection and 2014 regular-season MVP can utilize a player option in his contract to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end. There are enduring rumors his time with the Warriors may conclude so he can head east to sign with the New York Knicks.

While Durant didn’t directly discuss his future plans with Lee, he made it clear the success he found in Golden State made it worth the negative reaction.

“I’m from Washington, D.C. I went to Oklahoma City for eight years. Out of nowhere, I went to the Bay for three years,” he said. “I’ve been roaming my whole life. I never had no stable environment. Ever. Ever. Since I woke up. I sacrificed a lot of s–t to be here and to change my game up to be with these guys. And it was worth it.”

Although the summer will bring a new set of questions for Durant to answer, the short-term focus remains trying to chase down another championship with the Warriors. They are listed as the prohibitive favorite entering the playoffs, which comes as no surprise.

Donald Glover’s ‘Guava Island’ reframes his hit song ‘This Is America’

By Adam Rosenberg

It’s fair to say that Donald Glover’s summer 2018 Childish Gambino jam, “This Is America,” shook the internet.

The music video was packed with symbolism and it arrived like a crash of lightning, electrifying an audience hungry for a better understanding of the song’s intent. Now, in Glover’s new film Guava Island, a “This Is America” performance woven directly into the text helps us fine-tune that understanding.

The original music video that premiered in May 2018 was widely read as a commentary on systemic racism in the United States. The music’s shifting moods — alternating between an African folk-inspired melody and a pulsing trap beat — were accompanied by imagery that leapt from joyful singing and dancing to scenes of violence and back again.

Many saw that central dichotomy as a comment specifically on the experience of living as a black person in the United States. The song’s lyrics explore that tension as well, with the chorus delivering a growling warning of “This is America / Don’t catch you slippin’ up” while Gambino later sings the cheery refrain, “Get your money, black man.”

Now we have Guava Island, an hour-long fable set on the titular tropical paradise island that doubles as a sweatshop for a wealthy local family’s rare silk export. Glover is Deni, one of the island’s many unwilling silk workers who also happens to moonlight as a singer and performer.

The film is notably directed by Hiro Murai and written by Stephen Glover, Donald’s brother. This trio is also a key creative force behind some of the most successful episode of the the FX series, Atlanta.

SEE ALSO: ‘This Is America’ choreographer shows you how to do Childish Gambino’s dance

In an early scene, Deni reports to his job — at what looks like a factory that produces shotgun shells — and gets into an argument with one of his co-workers. The other man talks about how he wants to leave the island, because in America “people are their own bosses.” So he wants to bribe his way off the island, settle in the U.S., and start a business.

Deni scoffs at this plan. “This is America. Guava’s no different than any other country,” he says. “America is a concept. Anywhere where, in order to get rich you have to make someone else richer, is America.”

Their back-and-forth leads directly into Deni getting up on a wooden box and singing the opening “We just want to party” lines from “This Is America.” But this time, everything’s different. The melody is slightly different. The song’s slickly produced beats are replaced by the rhythmic whirs of factory machines. The dancers, the supporting cast, are all factory workers.

The shift in context makes all the difference. Deni is specifically not in America, nor is he a United States citizen in Guava Island. He’s standing on the manufacturing floor of a bullet factory in a foreign country with an (as far as we’re shown in the movie) all-black population. His job — everyone’s job, really — is provided by a wealthy local family that we’re led to understand demands total subservience in exchange for life’s essentials.

Guava Island is broadly about Deni’s point that “America is a concept.” The people who live on the island are trapped into the same kind of system, even if they lack the luxuries — what Deni would probably refer to as the illusion of freedom — that people in the U.S. take for granted.

That’s why Deni argues against leaving for America’s supposedly greener pasture. He’d rather see his community fight for that freedom in their own home. As he says earlier in the “This Is America” scene, before breaking into song: “[W]e live in paradise, but none of us have the time or means to actually live here.”

The movie’s remixed “This Is America” drives that point home. It wasn’t ever about a specific place. It’s really about this universal reality that oppression is a product of systems built to enrich a few on the backs of the many. That’s as true in Guava Island as it is in the United States.

Guava Island is now streaming for all Amazon Prime Video subscribers.

Taliban launches deadly in Afghanistan’s Kunduz

At least six people have been killed and more than 50 wounded in Afghanistan‘s northern city of Kunduz in an assault by Taliban fighters, according to a local official.

Mohammad Yusouf Ayubi, the head of the provincial council in Kunduz, said the group’s forces attacked the city from multiple directions in the small hours on Saturday.

Hundreds of people fled their homes as the sound of gunfire and explosions echoed from the city’s outskirts, he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency.

Naeem Mangal, the head of the Kunduz regional hospital, told the AFP news agency that at least eight people were killed and 62 wounded.

Also on Saturday, the Taliban claimed responsibility for an attack on a district headquarters in the eastern Nangarhar province late on Friday.

At least two Afghan troops were killed in the incident, along with 27 Taliban fighters, according to Attahullah Khogyani, the governor’s spokesman.

Nangarhar Governor Shahmahmood Miakhel said Afghan forces repelled the attack after reinforcements arrived.

The Taliban, which frequently exaggerates numbers, claimed to have killed or wounded “more than 200 soldiers, police and militias”.

Spring offensive

The assault came hours after the Taliban announced the start of Operation Fath, the name the group has given to this year’s spring offensive.

Also on Friday, the Taliban ambushed a police convoy in the western Ghor province, killing seven security forces, according to Abdul Hai Khateby, the provincial governor’s spokesman.

Among those killed was Faqir Ahmad Noori, the head of operations for the provincial police. Another two police and a civilian were wounded, Khateby said.

In the northern Baghlan province, the Taliban killed seven police and wounded eight in an attack on checkpoints late on Friday, said Safder Mohsini, the head of the provincial council.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani‘s office on Saturday condemned “in the strongest words” the announcement of Operation Fath.

“The continuation of war is no one’s interest,” it said.

The spring offensive traditionally marks the start of the so-called fighting season, though in reality fighting in the last winter has continued unabated.

The Taliban effectively controls nearly half of Afghanistan and has continued to launch frequent attacks on security forces despite holding several rounds of peace talks with the United States in recent months after nearly 18 years of war.

Later this month, Taliban officials are expected to meet Afghanistan representatives, including some officials from the government in Kabul, in Qatar‘s capital Doha.

The Taliban has long refused to speak officially with Kabul, dubbing the government a “puppet” of the West, and the group has insisted that government officials are attending only in a “personal capacity”.

The United Nations last week said it had lifted travel bans for 11 Taliban delegates, including Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, a cofounder of the movement and its top political leader, as well as Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, the Taliban’s former deputy minister of foreign affairs.

“The requested exemption is solely for travels required for participation in peace and reconciliation discussions,” the UN Security Council said.

On Friday, TMZ reported that Rogowsky — the man who’s hosted the app and graced users with his peppy digital presence and occasionally stylish blazers over the years — is leaving the company to host DAZN’s new MLB show, ChangeUp

Rogowsky also tweeted an announcement thread, addressing his “HQTIES” and explaining exactly why he was leaving.

A MESSAGE TO MY HQTIES – About three weeks ago, I announced that I had taken a new job hosting a new, live “whip-around” baseball show called ChangeUp on @DAZN_USA. As a lifelong baseball fan, it was a dream opportunity that I simply couldn’t pass up. (1/5)

He went on to say that he’d hoped he would be able to work both hosting jobs, but it didn’t work out. TMZ reported Rogowsky wanted to continue hosting weekend shows for HQ Trivia, but “CEO Rus Yusupov wouldn’t budge.”

“… Because I wasn’t given the courtesy of a farewell show, please allow me to use this thread to say all the things I would have said on my final broadcast,” Rogowsky tweeted before thanking his HQ colleagues and fans, writing, “there will always be a special place in my heart for my HQties all across the HQniverse.”

As the news that Rogowsky wouldn’t be returning to HQ in any capacity began to spread, fans of him and the app tweeted their disappointment.

Bucks’ Mike Budenholzer Reportedly Named NBCA 2019 Coach of the Year by Peers

Michael Conroy/Associated Press

After he led the Milwaukee Bucks to the best record in basketball in his first year on the job, Mike Budenholzer has garnered recognition from his peers.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Saturday that Budenholzer has been voted the National Basketball Coach’s Association’s 2019 Coach of the Year, which all 30 coaches vote on.

It marks the second time in Budenholzer’s career that he’s won a Coach of the Year award. He took the NBA‘s honor in 2014-15 after he led the Atlanta Hawks to a 60-22 record and the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

Now, he is being honored for helping the Bucks take a major step forward.

Before his arrival, Milwaukee was coming off a 44-win season and had not topped the 50-win plateau since 2000-01. It was immediately evident the Bucks would be a force, as they started 7-0.

The team controlled the East throughout the regular season and finished two games ahead of the Toronto Raptors (58-24) for the No. 1 seed.

Stephen Watson @WISN_Watson

Successful teams always talk about having a good ‘culture’. I asked @Giannis_An34 about the @Bucks culture and why he feels like it’s led to their historic season. He praises Mike Budenholzer:

“He made the players have fun and play harder for him.” https://t.co/m7OcPmIkhd

The 60-win effort marked Milwaukee’s best regular season since 1980-81.

ESPN Stats & Info @ESPNStatsInfo

The Bucks won their 60th game against the Hawks, whom Mike Budenholzer coached from 2013-18. He is now the 7th coach in NBA history to win 60 games with multiple franchises, joining:

Mike D’Antoni
Phil Jackson
Pat Riley (3x)
Rick Adelman
Don Nelson
K.C. Jones https://t.co/IAg8nURDRm

Under Budenholzer, Giannis Antetokounmpo put himself in the MVP conversation with a career year. He averaged 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.3 steals per game.

The Greek Freak was not the only reason for the team’s success, though. The Bucks were the highest-scoring team in the NBA at 118.1 points per game, and Budenholzer’s system helped Milwaukee finish second in the league in three-pointers made, averaging 13.5 per game.

Budenholzer is now tasked with trying to get Milwaukee out of the first round for the first time since 2001.

What the ‘pursuit of Assange’ means for press freedom

London, United Kingdom – Journalists, lawyers, activists and academics have warned that the arrest of Julian Assange could have grave consequences for press freedom if it results in the media’s ability to expose government wrongdoings being limited.

The 47-year-old founder of the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks, an Australian citizen, was arrested by British police on Thursday at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, after the South American country revoked his asylum status.

Assange had been locked up inside the embassy since 2012, when he sought refuge there while facing allegations of sexual assault in Sweden. He feared not receiving a fair trial and claimed that the charges were linked to his publishing activities with WikiLeaks.

Assange appeared before a judge on Thursday and was found guilty of breaching bail conditions in 2012. Police said Assange was then “further arrested on behalf of the United States authorities” under an extradition warrant.

The US has attempted to portray the case as a security issue.

Assange’s extradition hearing will take place in London on May 2.

“This sets a dangerous precedent for all media organisations and journalists in Europe and elsewhere around the world,” said his lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, vowing to fight the extradition. “This precedent means that any journalist can be extradited for prosecution in the United States for having published truthful information about the United States.”

In 2010, WikiLeaks released a number of classified documents on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, exposing US war crimes.

The site worked with media outlets – including Al Jazeera – to disseminate the information.

The pursuit of Assange by the American government sends a very clear message to anyone who is looking at leaking documents that they will also be pursued.

Meirion Jones, editor at Bureau of Investigative Journalism

The trove included a well-known video showing two Apache US military helicopters target a group of people in Iraq in 2007, resulting in the killing of more than 23 people including two Reuters journalists.

Former US intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning was found guilty of espionage for the leaks. She spent seven years in prison and was released in 2017 after her 35-year sentence was commuted by President Barack Obama.

But during the US presidential campaign in 2016, when WikiLeaks published hundreds of internal emails that damaged the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, Assange was accused of being a stooge of a Russian government’s attempt to interfere in the elections.

Assange’s critics credit him with helping Donald Trump clinch power.

But the indictment, dated March 6, 2018 and unsealed on Thursday, has nothing to do with those allegations.

An investigation by the US Department of Justice never found enough evidence to show that Assange knowingly worked with Russian intelligence to prop up the Trump campaign.

Instead, it accuses Assange of helping Manning crack a password to long into the Defense Department’s computer database with a username other than her own.

It does not explicitly charge Assange for publication, but accuses him of “conspiring” with Manning to obtain the classified documents.

“It was part of the conspiracy that Assange encouraged Manning to provide information and records from departments and agencies of the United States,” the indictment reads.

While the indictment skirts the issue of press freedom by charging Assange with computer fraud, rather than publishing crimes, journalists and press freedom advocates have expressed concern about the allegations of “collusion”.

They argue that it is part and parcel of a journalist’s job to encourage sources to provide more information if it is deemed to be in public interest.

“The potential implications for press freedom of this allegation of conspiracy between publisher and source are deeply troubling,” said Robert Mahoney, deputy director of the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

“With this prosecution of Julian Assange, the US government could set out broad legal arguments about journalists soliciting information or interacting with sources that could have chilling consequences for investigative reporting and the publication of information of public interest,” Mahoney added.

Freedom of the Press Foundation executive director Trevor Timm pointed out that “requesting more documents from a source, using an encrypted chat messenger, or trying to keep a source’s identity anonymous are not crimes; they are vital to the journalistic process.”

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange arrives at the Westminster Magistrates Court, after he was arrested in London, Britain April 11, 2019 [Hannah McKay/Reuters]

The Obama administration’s attempts to prosecute Assange floundered out of concern that doing so would impinge First Amendment rights. But the Trump cohort has been more outspoken, particularly after WikiLeaks began publishing secret CIA surveillance and cyber warfare tools in the series of documents known as Vault 7 in 2017.

“We can no longer allow Assange and his colleagues the latitude to use free speech values against us,” US Secretary of State and former CIA director Mike Pompeo said at the time. “To give them the space to crush us with misappropriated secrets is a perversion of what our great Constitution stands for. It ends now.”

The UK’s National Union of Journalists (NUJ) condemned the UK government’s cooperation with the US in the extradition case.

“The UK should not be acting on behalf of the Trump administration in this case,” said the NUJ’s assistant general secretary Seamus Dooley, adding that “the manner in which Assange is treated will be of great significance to the practice of journalism.”

WikiLeaks has come under fire in the past for publishing unedited information that includes the sensitive personal details of civilians or activists.

“When I dealt with WikiLeaks output, we very carefully went through everything that we were offered and checked that everything was in the public interest,” Meirion Jones, an editor at the London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism, told Al Jazeera.

Assange is perhaps the worst poster boy for press freedom given his activities. But we still have to recognise [the] issue of press freedom, even if it is Julian Assange in this case.

Scott Lucas, international politics professor at the University of Birmingham

At the time of the Iraq and Afghanistan leaks, Jones was working for the BBC.

“We used [WikiLeaks] as a source of information. We did not think of them as a publisher, although the definition of publisher is much more complicated nowadays,” Meirion added. “The pursuit of Assange by the American government sends a very clear message to anyone who is looking at leaking documents that they will also be pursued.”

Assange remains a polarising figure.

His supporters defend him as a persecuted journalist as detractors point to a political agenda behind his latest activities.

Meanwhile, journalists around the world continue to be killed, imprisoned and intimidated, often at the hands of governments.

The killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the country’s Turkish embassy is among the recent high-profile cases. In Europe, investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee Martina Kusnirova were murdered in Slovakia last year, sparking protests against state corruption. Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia’s was murdered in 2017 while investigating government corruption.

“Politically, the way the Americans are trying to get Assange and therefore to go after other whistleblowers is something we need to be conscious of,” Scott Lucas, international politics professor at the University of Birmingham, told Al Jazeera.

“Assange is perhaps the worst poster boy for press freedom given his activities. But we still have to recognise [the] issue of press freedom, even if it is Julian Assange in this case.”

Brie Larson and Oprah bonding over ‘Queer Eye’ is absolutely perfect

This is One Good Thing, a weekly column where we tell you about one of the few nice things that happened this week.

Who knew a simple style hack could inspire such a sweet moment between two of Hollywood’s favorite women?

While Brie Larson was attending the 10th annual Women in the World Summit in New York City this week, she made a new friend: Oprah Winfrey. Both were speakers at the summit, which aims to celebrate all types of women through talks and discussions.

SEE ALSO: Brie Larson has a strong stance on the gender pay gap

Thankfully, someone managed to record part of their interaction.

In the clip, Larson is just saying goodbye to Oprah after meeting her. But Winfrey, accompanied by her BFF Gayle King, continues to gush over the Captain Marvel actress’s outfit.

“Oh I love this half-in half-out tuck thing, too,” Winfrey says. Larson does a spin to show off the full effect, saying, “You gotta do the French tuck!”

After Larson admits that she learned how to do the European style trick from Tan France on Queer Eye, Winfrey says, “I’ve never seen it look this good.”

The video was posted to both of Larson’s Instagram and Twitter, because when Oprah Winfrey gives you a compliment, you don’t not post it everywhere.

Her caption reads, “I said ‘French tuck’ 500 times and my rosacea flared because OPRAH !!!”

To the cameraman that caught this magical moment: on the behalf of the whole internet, thank you, kind sir.

‘Game of Thrones’: The most shocking and brutal deaths

It seems a lifetime ago that we were issued the prime directive of Game of Thrones: You win or you die. Since then, we’ve watched our favorite characters (and a whole lot of expendable randos) compete valiantly or end up stabbed, shot, frozen, and burned in the ensuing unpleasantness.

Death is the only true god in Westeros and the show reminds us every week. What better way to prepare for Season 8 than to visit the literal ghosts of the past? Mashable combed through all seven seasons (tens of thousands of deaths) to remember the most shocking, brutal, and numerous deaths.

Enjoy at your own peril.

Game of Thrones Season 1’s murderous ice zombies, almost equally murderous Lannisters, and the death of the show’s de facto protagonist set our expectations for just how treacherous Westeros can be.

Most unexpected: Ned Stark’s was the death that shockingly illustrated how unsafe every character is in this world, and his death thrust the seven kingdoms into chaos.

Most gruesome: Khal Drogo kills his own tribesman Mago by ripping out his tongue after a fight.

This season brought death upon Robert Baratheon’s bastards (except Gendry) and introduced Jaqen H’ghar’s preferred method of killing, a lot of which he did at Harrenhal and then later teaches to Arya. Also purged were Qarth’s dramatic leaders The Thirteen, which gave Dany the assets she needed to continue her conquering of Essos slave cities.

Most unexpected: Renly Baratheon had no real claim to the throne but you gotta admit, he was one of the nicest men on the show. No one expected him to win but he died unexpectedly early thanks to Melisandre’s killer shadow baby.

Most gruesome: No big names are involved but the most underrated grossest death on Thrones come by way of Harrenhal’s torturer The Tickler: tying a bucket full of rats around a man’s guts and then setting it on fire, forcing the rats to chew through his body and organs. Sheesh.

The Season defined by Red Wedding also included Daenerys decimating slaveowners and a lot of wildling deaths (a preview of what’s to come).

Most unexpected: No matter how early or late you started watching Thrones, you remember exactly where you were when you witnessed the bloody massacre of Catelyn, Robb, and Talisa Stark at the hands of Walder Frey and his Lannister cohorts.

Most gruesome: Ros, who was always possessed of intellect and ambition beyond her station, was killed off-screen by Joffrey during the sickly sadism he practiced with Baelish’s prostitutes. Based on her first encounter with Joffrey, it was not a swift death, and her body is riddled with arrows as she hangs from a post.

Tis’ the season of the Battle of Castle Black, Joffrey’s long-awaited assassination, and the start of Ramsay Bolton’s fatal brutality towards those he dislikes. Lots of important Thrones events occurred here but death toll-wise, it was relatively not the worst.

Most unexpected: Tywin’s death by crossbow while on the privy (thanks, Tyrion!) marked the downfall of the Lannister clan. In the words of George R. R. Martin, “Lord Tywin Lannister did not, in the end, shit gold.”

Most gruesome: The Mountain gouging out Oberyn’s eyes and cracking his skull open like a piñata with his bare hands will go down in history. One of the hardest deaths to watch, tbh.

This season had the highest overall death toll with “Hardhome,” as well Meereenese fighters and Sons of the Harpy and the decimation of the Baratheon line.

Most unexpected: You’d think we would have known better than to think anyone was safe on this show, but two years after the Red Wedding Thrones viewers had cautiously begun to trust again. This was naive as Season 5 concluded with Jon being stabbed to death by his own men of the Night’s Watch.

Most gruesome: Meryn Trant meets his comeuppance at Arya’s hands in Braavos. You want to pity the gagged man howling for mercy after a teenager stabs him repeatedly in the eyes and chest, but he was also abusing little girls and has been on Arya’s list for years.

Season 6 will go down as the deadliest in terms of major characters being popped off…at the same goddamn time. Cersei ensured all her enemies burn by wildfire. This season is home to Battle of the Bastards and the end of the Bolton rule on the North (finally!) as well as Arya’s return to her motherland and killing off Walder Frey.

Most unexpected: I’m still not over Hodor’s surprising (and emotional) end. No one saw it coming but understandably, he gave up his life to save Bran and Meera from the icy undead. His death opened up even more time traveling possibilities and theories for the show.

Most gruesome: Ramsay Bolton died a satisfactory but ghastly death. Eaten alive by his own starving dogs? Horrendous but well-deserved.

As Thrones braced internally for the end, it felt like we lost the looming risk of earlier seasons in which a major character could drop dead at any moment. In Season 7, not a single major or main character died, more than likely because Thrones was saving them for the final showdown.

Most unexpected: Bad guys rarely get what’s coming to them in Game of Thrones, which made it immensely satisfying to watch the conniving Petyr Baelish slain before the Stark sisters he betrayed so many times over.

Most gruesome: The death of Viserion at the hands of the Night King was also shocking, and boy, that was a lot of blood.

Game of Thrones returns April 14.
