Facebook investors launch desperate bid to oust Mark Zuckerberg

The call to oust Mark Zuckerberg is coming from inside the house.

A group of investors have teamed up in an effort to replace the Facebook CEO and board chairman with an independent voice. The plan, put forth in an April 12 SEC filing, doesn’t mince words in its critique of the 34-year-old fan of smoked meats

“[Zuckerberg’s] dual-class shareholdings give him approximately 60% of Facebook’s voting shares, leaving the board, even with a lead independent director, with only a limited ability to check Mr. Zuckerberg’s power,” reads the statement supporting the proposal. “We believe this weakens Facebook’s governance and oversight of management.”

In other words, even Facebook investors think an unchecked Zuckerberg is bad for business. And in case that wasn’t clear enough, they lay out a few examples demonstrating, in their view, how miserably he’s screwed things up.

“We believe this lack of independent board Chair and oversight has contributed to Facebook missing, or mishandling, a number of severe controversies, increasing risk exposure and costs to shareholders,” the proposal reads.

It goes on to provide the following examples: “Russian meddling in U.S. elections,” “Sharing personal data of 87 million users with Cambridge Analytica,” “Data sharing with device manufacturers, including Huawei that is flagged by U.S. Intelligence as a national security threat,” “Proliferating fake news,” “Propagating violence in Myanmar, India, and South Sudan,” “Depression and other mental health issues, including stress and addiction,” and “Allowing advertisers to exclude black, Hispanic, and other ‘ethnic affinities’ from seeing ads.”

The plan, if adopted, would make “the Chair of the Board of Directors, whenever possible, be an independent member of the Board.”

Unsurprisingly, Facebook isn’t a fan. The company dismissed the need for an independent board chairperson, before reminding the investors in question that they don’t really have the votes to pull off this maneuver.

“In addition,” writes Facebook, “our stockholders rejected a similar proposal at our annual meeting of stockholders in 2017.”

Even though this specific attempt to pull Zuckerberg’s board chairmanship out from under him is destined to fail, the fact that it’s a recurring effort sends a warning of looming accountability to the CEO. If not today, then tomorrow. Time will tell if he listens.

Blackpink made K-pop history performing at Coachella

By Nicole Gallucci

K-pop has officially rocked Coachella, and the music festival will never be the same.

On Friday, Blackpink, a K-pop girl group comprised of four singers — Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa — made history by becoming the first such group ever to perform at Coachella. The festival has been home to other South Korean acts before, but as the Los Angeles Times pointed out, it’s the first time “a K-pop idol group at the height of its powers” took the Coachella stage.

Think of it as a milestone moment for the genre cementing its place in the minds of a U.S. audience.

Fans of the South Korean pop group, called “Blinks,” loved every second of the set, and the performance was even live-streamed on a large screen in New York’s Times Square at night.

Recently, the video for Blackpink’s new single, “Kill This Love,” broke some major records on YouTube, becoming the fastest video hit 100 million views, the most viewed music video debut in YouTube history, and the biggest YouTube Premiere of all time.

So it makes perfect sense that the turnout and love for the group at Coachella was phenomenal.

Post-Coachella, Blackpink will continue their “In Your Area” world tour, embarking on the North American leg.

Meanwhile, one of K-pop’s biggest boy groups, BTS, is prepping to perform as the musical guest on the next episode of Saturday Night Live. It’s truly a huge weekend for K-pop groups and fans alike.

Yemen’s Hadi attends rare parliamentary session

President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, the head of Yemen’s internationally recognised government, has made a rare visit to the war-torn country for a meeting of its divided parliament.

Hadi, who lives in Saudi Arabia, while rival Houthi rebels control the capital, Sanaa, attended the parliamentary session on Saturday in the government-controlled city of Sayoun, in eastern Yemen.

The government said some 141 members of the 301-strong assembly attended the meeting, seen as aimed at consolidating the Hadi government’s legitimacy disputed by rebels. The assembly was elected in 2003, but its mandate has been extended several times due to election delays over instability in the country.

Yemen’s Saudi-backed government led by Hadi and the Houthi forces have been engaged in a power struggle since late 2014, resulting in the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, according to the United Nations.

The implementation of a UN-brokered peace deal reached in December has since been in limbo.

“This extraordinary session is held in a historic moment as we stand in a crossroad between choices of war and peace,” Hadi said.

“Hasn’t the time come to lay down arms and initiate peace? We stretch out our hands with peace to the Houthis,” he told the parliamentary session.

During the meeting, parliamentarians elected Sultan al-Burkani of the General People’s Congress (GPC) of late former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh as their new speaker.

‘Political blow’ for Houthis

Yemeni parliament is split between Houthi supporters, government supporters and independents.

The Yemeni government is currently based in the southern city of Aden.

Local authorities in Aden, who are allied with the United Arab Emirates, refused to allow parliament to convene there.

“This is the first time that the coalition allies have been able to gather so many parliament members in one place to have a session,” said Hakim al-Masmari, the editor-in-chief and publisher of the Yemen Post, from Sanaa.

According to al-Masmari’s sources, 134 MPs attended the meeting, while “138 are required to legalise the session”, he said.

“The coalition is claiming that 141 were there and if this number was completed, this is a major blow politically for the Houthis and they lose a lot of ground when it comes to negotiations because, right now, the parliament has a lot of authority and can move on resolutions that are anti-Houthi,” he added.

A woman casts her vote during a complementary parliamentary election in Sanaa on Saturday [Khaled Abdullah/Reuters]

Meanwhile, in Sanaa, the Houthis have started to organise elections to fill 24 vacant seats in the same parliament, Saba news agency said.

“Voters will elect who will represent them constitutionally and legally,” Houthi Prime Minister Abdelaziz Bin Habtour was quoted as saying by Saba.

Yemen has been wracked by violence since 2014 when Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including Sanaa.

The crisis escalated in 2015 when a Saudi-UAE-led military coalition launched a devastating air campaign in Yemen in hopes of rolling back Houthi gains.

The violence has destroyed much of Yemen’s basic infrastructure, including water and sanitation systems.

Tens of thousands of people, mostly civilians, have been killed and economic collapse has left millions facing severe hunger.

Booker jolts campaign by launching national tour

Sen. Cory Booker

2020 Elections

The New Jersey senator looks to re-energize his presidential bid with a rally and a sharpened message.

NEWARK — Lagging in the early polls and in fundraising, Cory Booker returned home to re-energize his presidential campaign Saturday, kicking off a new phase designed to sharpen his message and distinguish himself from the pack of 17 other Democrats vying for the White House.

The New Jersey senator rolled out his “Justice for All” tour, a two-week national stint designed to stake out policy positions and frame his campaign around the theme of justice —economic justice, environmental justice and criminal justice, among other forms.

Story Continued Below

“Too many people believe the forces that are tearing us apart are stronger than the bonds that hold us together. I don’t believe that,” Booker said, kicking off the tour in New Jersey’s most populous city. “I believe we will achieve things that other people say are impossible. I believe we will make justice real for all.”

He pledged to build a clean energy economy by hold polluters to task, spoke about the need to end mass incarceration by treating addiction and called for investments in education and mental health. Booker also highlighted the need to create an economy where there are fair wages for all, in part by giving newborns a savings account to help close the wealth inequality gap.

Booker chose Newark as the launch for a reason: it’s the city where he got his start in politics, first as a city councilman and then as mayor.

Newark, he said, is a city that has always been “impatient for justice.”

“Well, here in Newark, we refused to wait,” Booker said. “We didn’t just talk about the injustice of people not being able to buy fresh fruits and vegetables — we opened grocery stores in food deserts. We got people to invest here. We opened new businesses here, created thousands of new jobs here together.”

Booker sought to use his hometown as the backdrop for a reset of sorts. While he has established an extensive early presidential state infrastructure, he’s posted modest first quarter fundraising numbers and is struggling to break out of the pack in the early polls.

“We’ve gone from four candidates when Cory announced in early February to 18 in the race now,” Booker campaign manager Addisu Demissie said on a Thursday conference call with reporters. “This is a moment to be able to say clearly, and above the din of what’s happening on the day to day basis, why Cory is in the race and what he’s fighting for.”

The senator’s campaign dismisses his standing in the polls (Booker is hovering around 3 to 5 percent) and the modest fundraising haul (coming in right now at about $5 million). Not only is it early in the primary, aides say, they are putting their energy into what’s important right now: the campaign has already held more than 60 events, and continues to build out robust organizing efforts in key states like Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada.

“No candidate can boast the staff infrastructure and local support that we have,” Demissie said. “We’re not building this campaign to win a poll in April of 2019, we are trying to win the election.”

Selena Gomez made her triumphant return to the stage with a little help from her friends.

On Friday night, Gomez joined her pal DJ Snake’s Coachella set to perform their hit song “Taki Taki” alongside Cardi B and Ozuna. Not only was it Gomez’s first time singing at Coachella, but it marked her first public performance since singing with her friend Taylor Swift at a May 2018 Reputation Tour stop.

Gomez has taken some time out of the spotlight following reports of a panic attack in 2018. She reportedly checked herself into a treatment facility to recover, and has been slowly reemerging, returning from her social media hiatus earlier in 2019.

Fans were thrilled to see Gomez join her fellow artists on stage at Coachella, and excitedly welcomed her back.

People in the audience started chanting “Selena” while Selena Gomez was leaving the stage at #Coachella.

In March, Billboard reported that Gomez has plans to release new music very soon, so perhaps the Coachella performance was just the beginning of her 2019 plans.
