After escaping Boko Haram, Nigerian IDPs addicted to Tramadol

Maiduguri, Nigeria – Aliyu Yusuf hadn’t heard of Tramadol until he arrived at an IDP (internally displaced persons) camp in 2016, having escaped an attack by Boko Haram on Gwoza, his hometown near the border with Cameroon.

One morning in the camp in Madinatu, where some 5,000 IDPs live on the outskirts of Maiduguri, there was no food to eat. A man he had made friends with offered him the drug to ease the pain of hunger.

A few tablets later, he felt relieved. It was the start of his Tramadol addiction.

“I feel very empty without Tramadol,” said Yusuf.

“It is the only thing that makes me tough and takes away all my pain away.”

Yusuf is one of dozens of IDPs in Madinatu who is addicted to Tramadol.

While it is mainly used as pain relief medicine, when taken at higher doses, it can produce the same high as heroin.

Tramadol binds to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, leading to a sense of euphoria.

Like Yusuf, most of the people on the drug in Madinatu told Al Jazeera that they were introduced to it in the IDP camp.

Many said they experienced post-traumatic stress following Boko Haram attacks and cited the challenges of living in an IDP camp as reasons for their dependence.

“Nothing matters to me any more whenever I take [Tramadol],” said 23-year-old Shettima, whose two brothers were killed in a Boko Haram attack in Bama town in 2015. “When fear comes, Tramadol takes it away.”

In 2015 when the camp was first erected, Tramadol was relatively unknown.

But when people managed to escape from Boko Haram captivity, where they were exposed to the drug by fighters, Tramadol made its way to the IDP community.

“They (dealers) gave the impression that it was a magic drug that will make whoever takes it very happy,” said Hauwa Salihu who has lived in Madinatu since escaping from Damboa town in 2015 when Boko Haram attacked. “People began to rush it since then.”

We’ve established a number of cases of bullying, intimidation and even sexual advances involving more than a dozen IDPs in Madinatu and Bulumkutu who regularly abuse Tramadol.

Jibrin Bukkar, counsellor and social worker

Among the former Boko Haram captives who introduced Tramadol to IDPs in Madinatu is 19-year-old Adamu Musa, who spent months in a Boko Haram camp after being abducted, along with about a dozen others, from their home in Gwoza.

During his time in captivity, Musa said he joined fighters on forced missions to attack communities and abduct young men his age. His captors made sure everyone took high doses of Tramadol before embarking on any mission. He became addicted in the process and when he arrived in Madinatu after escaping, he introduced the drug to some in the camp.

“I wanted to help them forget about what they’ve been through,” he said. “Tramadol helps you feel like you’re on top of the world.”

Drug abuse in IDP camps in northeastern Nigeria is not restricted to Madinatu.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), which last year arrested 19 IDPs for using and selling drugs in the Bakkasi and Mogolis IDP camps in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, said drug use affects several IDPs and that “none of the camps in the state capital is free from the nefarious drug activities.”

Tramadol continues to be the most common drug used in IDP camps. Aid workers say they have witnessed aggression as a side effect among users in Madinatu and nearby the Bulumkutu IDP camp.

“We’ve established a number of cases of bullying, intimidation and even sexual advances involving more than a dozen IDPs in Madinatu and Bulumkutu who regularly abuse Tramadol,” said Jibrin Bukkar, a counsellor and social worker at Caprecon Development And Peace Initiative, an organisation assisting victims of drug abuse and human trafficking in IDP camps.

“Excessive use of the drug can sometimes lead to symptoms like agitation, nervousness, tension, and changes in mood which can trigger aggression.”

Yes it keeps me calm most of the time, but it has taken away everything I have. I spent all my money buying Tramadol.

Maryam, Tramadol user

In Bulumkutu, where hundreds live in a crowded camp, 36-year-old Maryam has signs of depression following months of Tramadol abuse.

She was introduced to the drug after becoming frustrated in the camp, where IDPs often struggled to get enough food.

“Yes it keeps me calm most of the time, but it has taken away everything I have,” said Maryam, who is attempting to come off the drug following counselling. “I spent all my money buying Tramadol.”

The drug can easily be bought from local pharmacies for as little as 30 cents for a strip of 10 tablets, mostly in dosages as high as 225mg – more than two times what is legally allowed in some other countries.

Tramadol users also benefit from loose international regulation of production and distribution of the opioid, which has flooded Nigeria from South Asia, particularly India.

The United Nations said in December that almost 90 percent of all the pharmaceutical opioids (predominantly Tramadol) seized globally were seized in West, Central, and North Africa.

Cracking down

Nigerian authorities have cracked down on illegal importation; late last year, almost 600 million tablets were seized at the country’s biggest port.

But Nigeria’s porous borders have allowed for the drug to be smuggled from neighbouring countries including Benin, a country the US Department of State said was the world’s second largest destination for Indian Tramadol in 2016 after the US itself.

“The number of IDPs who abuse Tramadol keeps growing by the day and many of these persons get the drug from the black market,” said Yusuf Mohammed, a senior official at the Borno Community Coalition, an association of NGOs in Borno State supporting vulnerable IDPs – including victims of drug abuse, human trafficking, violence and exploitation.

“It appears black marketers, who may be working with Tramadol smugglers, have found a huge market with IDPs.”

In general, Nigeria’s problems with drug abuse is alarming.

Around 14.3 million people, or 15 percent of the country’s adult population, which is more than twice the global average of 5.3 percent, used a “considerable level” of psychoactive substances over the past year, according to an EU-funded survey on drug use and health.

A quarter of that number (about 4.6 million people) used opioids, including Tramadol, “for non-medical purposes.”

While efforts to reduce drug dependence in IDP camps are gathering pace, campaigners demand action on smuggling and the sale of opioids.

“Pharmacies have to insist on prescription before Tramadol is sold, and security at our borders has to be stronger,” said Bukkar. “If these actions are not effectively implemented, we will not get complete success in our campaign.”

Yes, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is Stan Lee’s final Marvel cameo

Brace yourselves, true believers. Avengers: Endgame will be Stan Lee’s final Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance.

“It’s his last one committed to film,” director Joe Russo confirmed to Mashable at a press day in Los Angeles. (Previously, he had said he was not sure if Lee had shot one for the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home.)

While the Russos didn’t say what, exactly, Lee’s cameo would be in the movie, they were happy to reminisce about their time with the comics legend.

Anthony Russo, a self-described “comic book nerd” as a kid, recalls how was “weird” when Lee would come to set — in a good way.

SEE ALSO: How Stan Lee’s ‘Captain Marvel’ cameo changed after his death

“We have all these movie stars on that set, and when Stan came to set, everybody would be like kids again,” he said. “It was always a lot of fun shooting these cameos because he was very charming, and he would maybe get the crew going, and everybody would be laughing and having a good time.”

Although Lee’s passing is undoubtedly tragic — and although any Marvel fan is sure to feel a little bit heartbroken seeing his face onscreen one last time — Endgame does seem like a fitting end.

“I have to say, I think it’s astonishing that this would be his last cameo,” remarked Joe. “It’s just kind of mind-boggling that he made it to the end of this run. I can’t believe it.”

Sudan opposition submits list of demands to military

Sudan‘s protest organisers have presented their demands, including the creation of a civilian government, in talks with the country’s new military rulers, the group spearheading the demonstrations said.

A statement by the Alliance for Freedom and Change, an umbrella group leading the protests, said a 10-member delegation submitted its list of demands to the military during a meeting on Saturday.

Thousands remained encamped outside the army headquarters in the capital overnight into Sunday to keep up the pressure on the military council that took power after ousting veteran leader Omar al-Bashir on Thursday.

One of the alliance’s leaders, Omar al-Degier, said in the statement that the demands include restructuring the country’s feared National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), whose chief Salih Ghosh has resigned following the ouster of Bashir.

“We will continue… our sit-in until all our demands are met,” including the formation of a fully civilian government, Degier said.

The Alliance for Freedom and Change insists that civilian representatives should be accepted onto the military council, and that a civilian government should be formed to run daily administration.

“We surely want our demands to be met, but both sides will have to be flexible to reach a deal,” said a protester who spent the night at the army complex.

On Saturday, the chief of the military council General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan vowed to dismantle Bashir’s establishment, and he lifted a night time curfew with immediate effect.

Burhan also pledged that individuals implicated in killing protesters would face justice and that protesters detained under a recent state of emergency would be freed.

Burhan took the oath of office on Friday after his predecessor General Awad Ibn Ouf stepped down just a day after the ouster of Bashir.

‘Peaceful transfer of power’

Tens of thousands of people have massed outside the army headquarters since April 6, initially to urge the armed forces to back their demand that Bashir be removed.

On Thursday, the army toppled the veteran leader, who had swept to power in an Islamist-backed coup in 1989.

But the protesters have vowed to remain in place until the military council demonstrably accepts its demands.

Dozens of people have been killed in protest related violence since demonstrations erupted against Bashir’s rule in December.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) issued statements in support of Sudan’s transitional military council.

WATCH: Sudan’s military holds talks with protesters as curfew lifted (02:46)

Riyadh said it “stands by the Sudanese people” and called on all Sudanese people “to give priority to the national interest” of their country. The UAE called on the Sudanese “to work for protecting legitimacy and ensuring a peaceful transfer of power”.

Saudi King Salman ordered an unspecified package of aid for Sudan that includes petroleum products, wheat and medicine.

In separate statements issued late Saturday, Saudi Arabia and the UAE specifically expressed support for Sudan’s transitional council formed by the military. The UAE said it welcomed the swearing-in of General Abdel-Fattah Burhan on Friday as head of that council.

World’s largest plane takes to the skies over California

World's largest plane takes to the skies over California
The jet stayed aloft for more than two hours, hitting a top speed of 304km per hour [Matt Hartman/AP]

The world’s largest aeroplane made its first test flight on Saturday in California.

The mega jet, called Roc, which has a wingspan the length of an American football field and is powered by six engines on a twin fuselage, carried out its maiden voyage over the Mojave Desert shortly before 7am Pacific time (14:00 GMT).

The plane, built by Stratolaunch Systems Corp, stayed aloft for more than two hours, hitting a top speed of 304km per hour, and reached an altitude of 5,182m.

It landed safely back at the Mojave Air and Space Port as a crowd of hundreds of people cheered.

“What a fantastic first flight,” Stratolaunch Chief Executive Officer Jean Floyd said in a statement posted to the company’s website.

“Today’s flight furthers our mission to provide a flexible alternative to ground launched systems,” Floyd said.

“We are incredibly proud of the Stratolaunch team, today’s flight crew, our partners at Northrup Grumman’s Scaled Composites and the Mojave Air and Space Port,” he added.

Stratolaunch was established in 2011 by Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen, who died in October last year. The company aims to make access to orbit more affordable and accessible by launching satellites into space from aircraft, rather than from the ground.

“We all know Paul would have been proud to witness today’s historic achievement. The aircraft is a remarkable engineering achievement and we congratulate everyone involved,” said the late billionaire’s sister Jody Allen, who is also the chair of his philanthropic trust.

Algeria’s magistrates threaten to boycott July presidential poll

More than 100 magistrates staged a protest outside the justice ministry on Saturday [Mohamed Messara/EPA-EFE]

Algeria‘s magistrates, who play a key role overseeing the country’s elections, said on Saturday they would boycott a July 4 presidential election in support of the protest movement.

Protestors have held vast rallies calling for allies of ousted president Abdelaziz Bouteflika to step down after the veteran leader quit early this month.

They have rejected the July poll, arguing that elections cannot be free and fair if they are held under the same judicial framework and institutions as those of the Bouteflika government.

Interim leader Abdelkader Bensalah has pledged a “transparent” vote but protestors have called for him to leave office too.

WATCH: Algeria sets presidential election for July 4 (01:42)

More than 100 magistrates staged a protest outside the justice ministry on Saturday in response to a call by the Magistrates’ Club – a nascent group set up as an alternative to the government’s National Magistrates’ Syndicate (SNM).

“The Magistrates’ Club has decided to boycott the task of supervising the presidential election,” said Saad Eddine Merzoug, a judge from El Oued in the country’s southeast.

Merzoug said the new club had members at every court in the country, without specifying numbers.

Magistrates play a major role organising votes in Algeria. Notably, they oversee the electoral roll, a frequent source of disputes between the regime and the opposition.

A revision of the register is set to take place later this month, ahead of the July election.

DeMar DeRozan, Spurs Hang On to Upset Nikola Jokic, Nuggets 101-96 in Game 1

DENVER, CO - APRIL 13: DeMar DeRozan #10 of the San Antonio Spurs shoots the ball against the Denver Nuggets during Game One of Round One of the 2019 NBA Playoffs on April 13, 2019 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. DeMar DeRozan posted 18 points, 12 rebounds and six assists as the No. 7 seed San Antonio Spurs upset the No. 2 Denver Nuggets 101-96 on Saturday in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Denver had the ball down 97-96 with 13.3 seconds remaining, but Nuggets guard Jamal Murray missed a potential game-winning jumper.

Spurs big man LaMarcus Aldridge grabbed the rebound, got fouled and hit two free throws to give San Antonio a 99-96 lead with 6.9 seconds left.

The Nuggets, who did not have any timeouts, then tried to rush down the floor. However, Spurs guard Derrick White stole the ball at midcourt and sealed the win with two free throws.

Five players scored 14 or more points for the Spurs: White had 16, Aldridge and Bryn Forbes pitched in 15 and Rudy Gay added 14.

Nuggets center Nikola Jokic posted a 10-point, 14-rebound, 14-assist triple-double. Murray scored 17 points and added six steals. Gary Harris led Denver with 20 points.

Spurs Must Win Perimeter Battle to Pull Off Series Upset

The Spurs entered Saturday as the NBA’s top three-point shooting team. The Nuggets began the playoffs as the league’s top three-point defending club.

San Antonio emerged as the winner of their perimeter battle thanks to making seven of 15 three-pointers, which was the key to the team’s success on a night where DeRozan and Aldridge combined to make just 12 of 36 field goals.

The Spurs made three-pointers when needed most. San Antonio guard Bryn Forbes hit one of his three to answer a Torrey Craig triple and give his team an 86-80 edge:

Denver clawed back, but then Davis Bertans hit another three to give the Spurs a 93-87 lead:

The Spurs’ formula for success is fairly simple: If they shoot like they did on Saturday, then the Nuggets are going to have a significant problem. San Antonio makes its threes at a 39.2 percent clip, and Denver ranks 17th at 35.1 percent.

Granted, Denver made just six of 28 three-pointers on Saturday, and chances are they won’t hit just 21.4 percent of their shots from beyond the arc again in this series.

However, we could see more games where the Spurs win thanks to their proficiency from beyond the arc, even though Denver clearly has the best player on the floor in Jokic.

Unsurprisingly, the Spurs’ three-point shooting correlates with their team success. San Antonio is 21-4 when it shoots 44.0 percent or better from beyond the arc, according to Basketball Reference. Victories in those 25 games include wins against 10 playoff teams.

That shooting will be crucial for the team’s postseason success because the Spurs can’t rely on their defensive efficiency like they have in championship years past. This team is far different, ranking 18th in that statistic per ESPN.com.

However, the Spurs can light it up from deep, and that could be enough to upset the Nuggets here.

Nuggets Need Bench Production to Reach Full Potential

The Denver reserves had more fouls (four) than made field goals (three) after the first half. They combined to score just nine points on 3-of-11 shooting, and three of the four reserves finished the first 24 minutes with a minus-10 mark.

Meanwhile, the San Antonio bench clearly outclassed Denver. More accurately, Rudy Gay did so by himself.

The 13-year veteran outscored the Nuggets bench, 12-9. He and Marco Belinelli combined to score 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting.

In fairness, what we saw is an anomaly: The Denver reserves had the seventh-best net rating in the league, per NBA.com, as well as the league’s No. 5 offensive rating. They aren’t going to be pushed around for the remainder of this series and fared better in the second half, with Beasley leading the unit with 10 points.

But the Spurs bench is one of the NBA’s best, tied for fifth in net rating. San Antonio has reserves capable of lighting it up from deep for a Spurs team that ranks sixth in offensive efficiency, per NBA.com.

The Nuggets’ reserves may simply need to overmatch their offensive firepower, a task that’s feasible given the efforts of Monte Morris and Beasley.

Morris, a second-year guard, has averaged 10.4 points on 49.3 percent shooting (41.4 percent from three-point range). He’s also second on the team with 7.4 assists per 100 possessions, according to Basketball Reference.

Beasley, a third-year wing, has enjoyed a breakout campaign thanks to 11.3 points on 47.4 percent shooting (40.2 percent from three-point range). Paul Garcia of Project Spurs pointed out Beasley’s proficiency from beyond the three-point line:

T.J. McBride of Mile High Sports pointed out his importance as well:

Those two players are the only ones on the Nuggets roster to make more than 36.7 percent of their threes. Their success is critical for Denver’s postseason campaign, especially against more proficient three-point shooting teams like San Antonio.

Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News also pointed out the Nuggets bench as one of the keys to the series:

Ultimately, the Nuggets hung around in this game in part because the reserves were able to succeed in the second half, thanks in part to Beasley’s efforts, Torrey Craig’s two threes, a solid all-around effort from Mason Plumlee and a few dimes from Morris. That quartet will be called upon to help Denver climb back into this series.

What’s Next?

Denver will host San Antonio for Game 2 on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET.
