Kim Jong Un: Supreme representative of all the Korean people?

Seoul, South Korea – Kim Jong Un’s awarding himself of a new title – the Supreme Representative of all the Korean People – is said to solidify the North Korean leader’s grip on power but is also likely to cause aggravation in Seoul.

North Korean state media, the Korean Central News Agency, began referring to its leader under the new title on Friday, after Kim emerged from one of North Korea’s largest political reshuffles in recent history with increased power.

But while there’s debate in South Korea as to what the new title means, some believe it is in line with Pyongyang’s ultimate goal of reunification which it has stated openly on numerous occasions.

“They’ve been talking about the issue of minjok for some time now,” James Kim, of the security think-tank Asan Institute in Seoul, told Al Jazeera.

Minjok is the Korean term for the shared bloodline between Korean people, and is often used to spark nationalist fervour and rally public support.

“It’s not out of the ordinary and North Korea has always stuck to that kind of rhetoric.”

The idea of reunification is built into North Korea’s political system, with the ruling Worker’s Party leading a coalition called the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland, otherwise known as the Fatherland Front.

The South Korean government has yet to comment on Kim’s new title but reactions in Seoul have been mixed, with many passing the comment off as just another boisterous claim by North Korean leadership.

“Grand overstatements are par for the course in DPRK politics and media,” said Lonnie Edge, assistant professor at the Hankook University of Foreign Studies in Seoul.

Many in Seoul feel the same.

“They always saying outrageous things. I don’t take it seriously,” said Kim Mee-young, a nail artist and hip-hop dancer in Seoul.

North Korea must deliver ‘blow’ to those imposing sanctions

Others believe Kim had no right in claiming to represent South Koreans.

“We already have a president. Most South Korean people wouldn’t approve of that [Kim’s title],” said Lee Gi-yoon, a 27-year-old police officer from Busan, South Korea.

But not everyone in South Korea is skeptical of Kim. When rumors spread of Kim’s possible visit to Seoul last December, a poll by Realmeter found 61 percent of South Koreans willing to welcome the North Korean leader.

Kim is not the only leader stoking hopes for a reunited Korean peninsula.

President Moon, whose parents fled North Korea during the 1950-53 Korean War, has led an ambitious charge towards improving ties with Pyongyang.

‘Peace, prosperity and reunification’

Last week, Moon reaffirmed his reunification goals after his return from Washington where he held talks with US President Donald Trump to discuss progress on denuclearisation talks with North Korea following the failed Vietnam summit in February.

“The fervent desire of the Korean people is to see the journey towards ultimate peace, prosperity and reunification completed,” President Moon said in a statement to senior secretaries.

The idea of reunification, however, may be losing popularity among young South Koreans.

A survey done in 2017 by the Korea Institute for National Unification found that 71 percent of South Koreans in their 20s are against reunification. Support has plummeted across the population to 57.8 percent, down from 69.3 percent in 2014.

After nearly 70 years of separation, the economic and cultural differences have widened between the world’s last hermit kingdom and the technologically advanced society of South Korea.

South Korea currently has a GDP of $1.5 trillion compared to $12.38bn of North Korea’s.

Although relations have improved in recent months, a stream of hostile rhetoric from North Korea in the past also keeps many young people from seeing unification as a benefit.

“I don’t even hope for reunification anymore, I think a lot of young people feel the same,” said 28-year-old Yoon Sora, who works at an airport in South Korea.

“North Korea has broken our trust a few times. So we don’t know when they’ll betray us again.”

Some also believe President Moon may be blinded by his hopes for reunification.

But the shifting public opinion has not stopped President Moon from putting great effort into establishing peace on the peninsula, evident from his recent trip to Washington.

“Peace on the Korean Peninsula is a matter of survival for us. This is a matter that is inseparable from not only the lives and safety of the Korean people, but also the economy,” Moon said in a statement after his trip.

He also told senior officials that an inter-Korean summit was the next step in the dialogue with North Korea, adding that Trump also “recognised the need” for that summit.

With the next inter-Korean summit likely to take place in Seoul, public opinion on Kim and reactions to his boisterous claims will be put to the test.

iOS 13 will bring a huge dark mode update to iPhone

iPhones are about to get darker.
iPhones are about to get darker.

Image: justin sulivan / Getty Images

By Karissa Bell

If you’re a fan of dark mode on just about every device you own, you’re really going to like the next version of iOS.

That’s because iOS 13, the iOS update expected later this year, will finally add a system-wide dark mode, according to a new report from 9to5Mac.

According to 9to5Mac’s sources, the update will ship with a dark mode that you can control in the main settings app. Reportedly similar to the dark mode in macOS, the iOS version will enable a darker theme throughout your phone. (Though individual app developers would presumably still need to support the feature as well.)

SEE ALSO: How to enable ‘dark mode’ in 10 popular mobile apps

Also on the agenda for iOS 13: new multitasking features for iPad, an improved Mail app, and a new “undo” gesture.

The new iPad features promise a more flexible way to use multiple apps at once. Instead of simply split-screen multitasking, the update would allow each app to run in multiple, smaller windows.

“Each window will also be able to contain sheets that are initially attached to a portion of the screen, but can be detached with a drag gesture, becoming a card that can be moved around freely,” according to 9to5.

Speaking of gestures, iOS 13 will introduce a new gesture to “undo” actions that will include a three finger tap gesture that sounds rather complicated. (Though the current “shake to undo” iOS has used for years is also completely unintuitive.)

The Mail app is also set to get some changes to how emails are organized as the app will be able to categorize messages similar to Gmail and Inbox (RIP)

Finally, a small but significant change: Apple will reportedly change the on-screen graphic that appears when you change your iPhone’s volume. Presumably so the UI, which has been criticized for so long it’s become its own meme, won’t interfere with entire screen just because you want to adjust your volume settings.

Of course, these changes are all still rumors for now. Nothing is certain until WWDC, Apple’s annual June event where it shows off new iOS and macOS updates. Until then, we’ll have to obsess over Twitter’s actually-black dark mode as we wait for more leaks.

Bicycles will soon be available on the Lyft app, but its e-bikes still need a fix

Bike-sharing is coming to the Lyft app for New Yorkers.

Starting in May, Lyft-owned bike-sharing company Motivate will offer its Citi Bikes directly through the Lyft app. Citi Bike has 12,000 bikes available in NYC, though this past weekend some 1,000 of the electric-assist bicycles available for rent in New York were pulled due to a braking problem

SEE ALSO: Lyft pulled electric bikes off the streets in New York, San Francisco, and D.C.

While there’s no set timeline for when the electric bikes will return to the streets, Lyft has since swapped out the potentially faulty bikes with classic pedal bikes – with no electric motor to give you a boost. Bikes in the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington, D.C. were also affected. Lyft says it only pulled 15 percent of available bicycles in all three locations.

“After a small number of reports and out of an abundance of caution, we are proactively pausing our electric bikes from service. Safety always comes first,” said a Lyft bike spokesperson in a statement.

That means that even if the e-bikes aren’t back in a few weeks, traditional bikes will be available to select users in the Lyft app in NYC. Eventually Citi Bike members with a separate account will be able to link to the Lyft app. Lyft acquired Motivate last year and has slowly been bringing in the bike-share features to the ride-hail app instead of a separate app to reserve and rent the bikes.

The in-app bicycle rentals are expected to make it to more cities in the coming months.

Lyft explained how the app integration will work: You’ll find one of the 750 Citi Bike stations, open the app, select the bike option, and punch in the five-digit code from the app into the dock to release your chosen bicycle. It’ll use your Lyft account to book the bike and for payment.

How to use the Lyft app to rent a bicycle.

Image: lyft

Lyft is known for its ride-sharing services, but last year it launched electric scooter rentals in some cities and acquired Motivate’s bike-share system. Lyft has been putting together a new generation electric bicycle that will deploy soon — but until then the e-bikes that were available were the pre-acquisition Motivate-made models.

Like its competitor Uber, Lyft is trying to diversify its offering well beyond the usual taxi ride.

Background:

  • We recently received a small number of reports in which riders experienced stronger than expected braking force on the front wheel. (This could cause a fall. Strongly applying the front brake can have this effect on any bike.)

  • We proactively engaged our suppliers and a third-party engineering firm to perform a root cause analysis. That work is ongoing, but — given the importance of rider safety — we wanted to take this voluntary pause action.

  • This impacts 15% of bikes in the Motivate-run bike share systems Citi Bike (NYC), Capital Bikeshare (DC) and GoBike (Bay Area).

  • The Motivate systems will work to replace these bikes with classic bikes so service levels will be largely uninterrupted.

  • This was the model Motivate built prior to the acquisition. Separately, Lyft has been working on a new electric bike model that will be ready to deploy soon.

Sudan protesters warn ‘remnants of Bashir regime’ still at work

Sudan’s principal protest group has demanded the immediate formation of a civilian-led government to replace the country’s new ruling military council, warning that the demonstrators’ “revolution” faces threat from “the remnants of the regime” of deposed leader Omar al-Bashir.

Fearing that the core of the old establishment is far from gone, the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) on Monday reiterated its call for the military council to be dissolved and substituted by a civilian one that will only include “limited” army representation.

The umbrella organisation, which spearheaded the months of protests that precipitated al-Bashir’s removal, also demanded the sacking of Sudan’s prosecutor general and judiciary head, as well as the disbanding of the former president’s National Congress Party (NCP).

“The objectives of the revolution cannot be achieved totally and completely in the face of the backstage manipulations by the remnants of the regime,” SPA member Taha Osman told reporters in the capital, Khartoum.

“The key demand is the formation of a civil council to guarantee that the revolution is safeguarded and all the goals are achieved.”

‘Protect your revolution’

On April 11, after nearly four months of the popular uprising, a military takeover ended al-Bashir’s 30-year authoritarian rule. In a televised address to the nation, Sudan’s then-Defence Minister, Lieutenant General Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf, announced that al-Bashir – who had seized power himself in a 1989 coup – had been arrested and taken to a “safe” location.

But the protesters’ elation quickly turned to anger as Ibn Auf, a long-time al-Bashir loyalist, announced the establishment of a two-year transitional military council and later was sworn in as its head.

Defying a newly imposed curfew, the demonstrators continued taking to the streets, denouncing Ibn Auf’s statement as a “farce”. Barely 24 hours later, the military council was forced to appoint its second leader in two days, with Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan replacing Ibn Auf.

Since then, negotiations have taken place between the council and protest organisers, who on Saturday submitted a list of demands to Sudan’s military rulers.

The military council is yet to formally respond to those demands, which include the transfer of power to a civilian-headed transitional authority for a period of four years, at the end of which elections will be held.

It has, however, made a number of moves in an apparent bid to appease the protesters, including the lifting of the nighttime curfew.

Al-Burhan has also vowed to restructure state institutions and “uproot the [Bashir] regime and its symbols” – but has also said that the transition to civilian rule could take up to two years.

Concessions fail to appease protesters

Al Jazeera’s Mohamed Vall, reporting from Khartoum, said the recent concessions by Sudan’s military rulers had failed to win over protesters, many of whom remain distrustful of the higher echelons of the country’s armed forces due to their historical links to al-Bashir’s former administration.

“Remember, we are talking about a regime that has been deep-rooted in power for 30 years, so the SPA and other powers behind this protest know … that the top ranks of the military, those who have staged this coup, will not easily give up the power that the military used to have in Sudan,” Vall said.

“Some of the military leaders are very close to the former regime and the protesters want to make sure that anyone who has links with the former regime … [and] with the former NCP have to leave the stage and that new powers and a new Sudan should emerge,” he added.

The SPA’s press conference came just hours after it called on protesters to safeguard the “revolution” in the wake of a failed attempt by security forces to remove roadblocks put in place around a sit-in being held outside a vast complex housing the Sudanese military headquarters and defence ministry in Khartoum.

“We urge all the people to go immediately to the army headquarters to stop attempts to disperse protesters,” the SPA said in a statement.

New Pixel phones might be just around the corner.

Weeks ahead of its annual I/O developer conference, Google’s put up a teaser on its store website insisting “on May 7, something big is coming to the Pixel universe.”

The teaser section is accompanied by a video for a commercial of Avengers: Endgame, wherein the Google Assistant and Pixel 3’s various camera features such as Top Shot and Playmoji augmented reality avatars are used.

The teaser reveals absolutely nothing about what to expect on May 7, but Android Police strongly believes Google might announce two new phones — the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL — on May 7.

The two new Pixel phones have been rumored for quite a while and have been extensively leaked.

A previous report suggests the Pixel 3a and 3a XL will be cheaper versions of the Pixel 3 and 3XL. What the “a” stands for is anyone’s guess, though.

Per the rumors, the new phones will reportedly cost a “couple of hundred dollars cheaper” than the Pixel 3s.

To cut costs, the Pixel 3a and 3a XL will reportedly look and feel like less premium devices. Instead of OLED displays, they’ll reportedly come with LCD screens. Instead of the glass design, the phones will be made of plastic. And instead of using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chip, the phones might be powered by midrange Snapdragon 670 chip. The Pixel 3a’s might also come with a feature the Pixel 3’s don’t have: a headphone jack.

Despite receiving high marks in reviews (ours included), Google’s Pixel phones have struggled to make much of a dent in the global smartphone market. Google’s reported to have only sold 3.9 million Pixel phones in all of 2017.

In a highly saturated market dominated by Apple, Samsung, and Huawei, and a new breed of Chinese phone makers such as OnePlus and Oppo, it’s not surprising Google hasn’t found much success with its Pixels.

Cheaper Pixels, however, could help Google in emerging markets. For these regions, iPhones and Galaxies and Pixel 3’s are simply too expensive. More affordable Pixels — even if it means less performance — could be a hit for these more budget-conscious markets.

All will be clear in a few weeks at Google I/O. Mashable will be reporting live from I/O starting on May 7. Stay tuned.

France’s iconic Notre Dame cathedral is engulfed in flames, and officials let Trump know that his suggestions were not helpful.

Completed in 1345 after nearly 250 years of construction, the centuries-old cathedral caught fire on Monday. The exact cause is still unknown, but according to the BBC, officials say recent renovation work could be linked to the blaze.

Horrified onlookers watched the spire and ceiling collapse in the flames.

President Trump expressed his condolences on Twitter and suggested using “flying water tankers” to dampen the fire.

So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!

Two hours later, the French civil security and crisis management account politely subtweeted Trump. Note that this particular tweet is in English while the account’s previous tweets are in French.

“All means are being used, except for water-bombing aircrafts,” the agency tweeted, explaining that if the Paris Fire Brigade were to use Trump’s suggestion, what’s left of the cathedral could collapse entirely.

Hundreds of firemen of the Paris Fire Brigade are doing everything they can to bring the terrible #NotreDame fire under control. All means are being used, except for water-bombing aircrafts which, if used, could lead to the collapse of the entire structure of the cathedral.

It’s very normal that we live in a world where a French civil security government Twitter account has to subtweet the most powerful man in the world as he fires off half-baked wetbrained Cliff Clavin ideas while watching TV https://t.co/Ri85mseHQx

“We’re not sure of being able to stop the spread of the fire in the north belfry,” a spokesman for the Parisian fire brigade said in television interviews. He said the fire had started in Notre Dame’s attic, and around 400 firefighters were deployed to the site. “I leave you to imagine, in that case, the extent of the damage.”

As of Monday evening, a French official announced that Notre Dame has been saved from “total destruction.” They’re still scrambling to preserve the priceless artifacts stored in the cathedral.

The cathedral was in “dire need” of restoration, the New York Times reports. Renovations cost about 120 million euros, according to ABC News
