Jamal Murray Leads Nuggets to Comeback Game 2 Win vs. LaMarcus Aldridge, Spurs

Jamal Murray scored 21 fourth-quarter points and Nikola Jokic posted 21 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists as the Denver Nuggets beat the San Antonio Spurs 114-105 in Game 2 of their NBA Western Conference first-round playoff series Tuesday.

Denver trailed 78-59 with 4:28 left in the third quarter. Murray then led the Nuggets on a furious charge and gave Denver a 101-99 lead with this shot:

After Spurs wing DeMar DeRozan hit two free throws to draw San Antonio within one, Murray assisted on a Jokic bucket before hitting back-to-back threes to put the game away:

As Fantasy Labs managing director Justin Phan noted, Murray nearly outscored the Spurs, who had 23 fourth-quarter points, in the final 12 minutes.

DeRozan led all scorers with 31 points. Teammate LaMarcus Aldridge added 24 points and eight rebounds.

Denver and San Antonio are now tied at one game apiece in their best-of-seven series.

Jamal Murray Must Find Consistency for Nuggets to Maintain Success

Jokic might be the Nuggets’ best player, but the team can only go as far as Murray takes it.

Check out these stats fromΒ Harrison Wind of BSN Denver for example:

Harrison Wind @HarrisonWind

Jamal Murray had 3 points on 0-8 shooting through three quarters. He scored 21 in the fourth on 8-9 shooting. I’ve never witnessed anything like what just happened. Nuggets win 114-105. What?

Unsurprisingly, San Antonio outscored Denver by seven points in the first three quarters, but the Nuggets outpaced the Spurs 39-23 in the final 12 minutes.

The correlation between Murray’s shooting prowess and the team’s success has been a trend all season: The Nuggets are 12-0 when Murray shootsΒ 55 percent or betterΒ from the field.

However,Β the Nuggets don’t look like a No. 2 seed when the ex-Kentucky star struggles from the field. When the 22-year-old hits 28.6 percent or fewer shots, they are just 5-7.

The question now is whether he can avoid the occasional rough shooting nights (e.g. going 8-of-23 in Game 1) that have dotted his season.

If history is any indication, Murray will have a tough time on the road in this series. The point guard has extreme home-away splits this year, making 47.5 percent of his field goals in Denver and 40.0 percent away from the Pepsi Center.

The problem is the Spurs have extreme home-away splits as well. San Antonio is an excellent 32-9 at home but a pedestrian 16-25 on the road. Similarly, Denver is 34-7 at home and just 20-21 on the road.

As ESPN analyst Ryen Russillo pointed out during Murray’s rough stretch Tuesday, the Spurs look like the favorite if Murray can’t get it going:

Russillo @ryenarussillo

If Jamal Murray is going to be this bad the Nuggets have no chance vs. the Spurs.

But if he does, then Murray isn’t much different than a player who catches fire in NBA Jam: He’ll hit everything. He’s capable of doing things that no one has done in years, as ESPN pointed out:

NBA on ESPN @ESPNNBA

Jamal Murray’s 21 points are the most by any player in the 4th quarter of a playoff game since Paul George in 2014! https://t.co/Vp4d01HoXo

Ultimately, Denver isn’t winning this series unless his shot falls more consistently. The Nuggets may have a championship-winning ceiling if it does, however.

San Antonio’s Resurgent D Key to Series Upset, Deep Playoff Run

The Spurs mostly played tremendous defense for the first 80 minutes of this series, but the last 16 will stick with San Antonio heading into Game 3.

San Antonio allowed 55 points during that stretch, including 39 in the fourth. Denver Nuggets not named Jokic committed only two turnovers (the big man had three in an otherwise stellar night). They shot 48.3 percent from the field and hit 10 of 24 threes.

That was a stark contrast from Game 1.Β Denver couldn’t get too much going offensively, shooting just 42.0 percent from the field and 21.4 percent from three.

It looked like more of the same after Game 2’s first quarter, when they scored just 21 points. The Nuggets also trailed 78-59 late in the fourth frame.

The Spurs’ Jekyll-and-Hyde defense is the key to this series and their playoff lives.

If the defense excels, a deep playoff run could be on the horizon.

If it struggles, then Denver should be moving on.

San Antonio’s defense looked like it had made a significant turnaround after a poor first half of the year.Β The Spurs ranked just 20th in defensive rating throughout the season, perΒ NBA.com, but that figure jumped to aΒ ninth-place tieΒ after the All-Star break.

And with that, San Antonio improved down the stretch, going 15-8 (65.2 winning percentage) after a 33-26 mark (55.9 percent winning rate) before mid-February.Β

The offense has not been a problem thus far.

The Spurs have two perennial All-Stars in Aldridge and DeRozan, who average more than 20 points per game.

Point guard Derrick White, who wasn’t even in the rotation last year and was slated to be a reserve until Dejounte Murray suffered a torn ACL in the preseason, has shown the postseason stage is not too big for him. He’s averaged 16.5 points on 66.7 percent shooting.

San Antonio has one of the NBA’s better reserves in the efficient Rudy Gay, who has made more than half of his shot this season. And as a team, the Spurs are No. 1 in three-point percentage.

But the defense has been the team’s Achilles’ heel. The Spurs were in the bottom half of the league in field-goal defense and three-point defense. They’ve also given up loads of points in some games and notably allowed 130 to a New York Knicks team that finished 17-65.

So what needs to change?

First, the Spurs have to defend better in transition. Paul Garcia of Project Spurs noted the Game 2 damage:

Paul Garcia @PaulGarciaNBA

After scoring 0 fast break points in Game 1, the Nuggets scored 21 in Game 2.

That’s 7 more fast break points than the Spurs usually allow the opponent.

Second, San Antonio needs to prevent open threes as much as possible. The defense seemed a little late here on this Malik Beasley three, for example:

Third, the Spurs have to find a way to stop Paul Millsap. Nick Kosmider of The Athletic noted how he was doing work in the post:

Millsap finished with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

If Murray gets hot, there’s nothing much one can do to stop him. And Jokic is one of the best and most versatile players in the league, so the same goes for him. The key is for the Spurs to take care of business in other areas, and that could make the difference between an early playoff exit and a deep playoff run.

What’s Next?

The Spurs will host the Nuggets for Game 3 on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET.

Blue Jackets Win 1st-Ever Playoff Series with Historic Sweep of Lightning

COLUMBUS, OH - APRIL 16: Oliver Bjorkstrand #28 of the Columbus Blue Jackets beats Andrei Vasilevskiy #88 of the Tampa Bay Lightning for a goal during the second period of Game Four of the Eastern Conference First Round during the 2019 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs on April 16, 2019 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Alexandre Texier scored two empty-netters, Pierre-Luc Dubois posted a goal and two assists and Oliver Bjorkstrand netted the game-winner as the wild-card Columbus Blue Jackets stunned the Presidents’ Trophy champion Tampa Bay Lightning 7-3 to sweep their NHL first-round postseason series on Tuesday.

The Lightning tied the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings’ record for the most regular-season wins in NHL history with 62.

However, they left the postseason with none after the Blue Jackets outscored the Lightning 19-8 over the four games.

Tampa Bay also became just the fifth team in league history and first since 1938 to finish with the league’s best regular-season record but get swept in an opening-round postseason series, per Sportsnet Stats:

Sportsnet Stats @SNstats

#CBJ sweep the Lightning

Tampa Bay is the 5th team in history to finish with the NHL’s best regular season record & get swept in their opening round playoff series, joining

1937-38 Bruins
1928-29 Canadiens
1923-24 Senators
1920-21 St. Pats

ESPN reported that earning the most regular-season wins in an American professional sports league’s history does not correlate with championship success, oddly enough:

ESPN @espn

The Tampa Bay Lightning’s 62 regular-season wins were tied for the most by a team in NHL history.

They got swept out of the playoffs in the first round. https://t.co/30hrVX3OQX

The Lightning are also the first team since the 2011-12 Vancouver Canucks to earn the Presidents’ Trophy but lose in the first round.

Bjorkstrand was in the right place at the right time to put home the winning goal at the 18:46 mark of the second period:

The Blue Jackets held off a furious Lightning charge in the third period thanks in part to goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who made 13 saves during the final 20 minutes.

Eventually, Columbus finished off Tampa Bay with three empty-net goals, earning a spot in the next round. The NHL Public Relations team noted the significance of Columbus’ first postseason series win in franchise history:

NHL Public Relations @PR_NHL

The @BlueJacketsNHL are just the fourth team in NHL history to record a sweep in their first-ever series victory. #NHLStats #StanleyCup https://t.co/w9KvpofYXI

The odds were clearly stacked against Columbus heading into the series.

Patrick Everson of Covers reported the pre-series odds:

Patrick Everson @Covers_Vegas

Per @SuperBookUSA, prior to #StanleyCup Playoffs, No. 1 overall seed Lightning opened -425 favorites to win series vs. Blue Jackets, and Tampa Bay was bet up to -450. Columbus opened +325 and moved to +350 pre-series. Blue Jackets swept series tonight. @Covers

A hypothetically successful $450 bet on Tampa Bay would have netted $100.

Per theΒ Greek Sportsbook, Columbus had astronomical 45-1 odds to sweep Tampa Bay. Jeff Sherman of the Westgate SuperBook also noted what a four-game moneyline parlay would have netted a bettor:

a 4 game money line parlay on the Columbus Blue Jackets would equate to 55/1 on the sweep of the Tampa Bay Lightning

The Lightning outscored the Blue Jackets 17-3 in three regular-season games, making the playoff result more shocking. Columbus’ postseason appearance was also in doubt until the final week of the season thanks to the Montreal Canadiens, who finished just two points behind the Blue Jackets for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Understandably, many Lightning fans were stunned and frustrated that the Stanley Cup favorites didn’t win a playoff game, and the team’s first tweet after the loss reflected those sentiments:

Tampa Bay Lightning @TBLightning

We don’t have any words and we know you don’t want to hear them.

We understand your anger, your frustration, your sadness. Everything you’re feeling – we get it.

This isn’t the ending we imagined, and certainly not the one we wanted. Thank you for being there the entire way.

Lightning captain Steven StamkosΒ admittedΒ that Columbus was “the better team.”Β

In the other locker room, Blue Jackets captain and center Nick Foligno was clearly happy to break a franchise cold streak:

Alison @AlisonL

Foligno heads off the ice to room and says with authority β€œ20 f**cking years coming” #CBj

Columbus now enters the conference semifinal for the first time in franchise history and will play either the Toronto Maple Leafs or the Boston Bruins.

Toronto currently leads its series over Boston, two games to one. Game 4 is Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET in Toronto.Β

There may be a copy of Wikipedia somewhere on the moon. Here’s how to help find it.

The last known location of the lost library.
The last known location of the lost library.

By Chris Taylor

If you’ve ever worried that humanity will ever wipe itself out so completely that there’ll be no record of our civilization for aliens to discover, you can now rest (somewhat) easy.Β

Even if we blow everything on Earth to smithereens tomorrow, there will likely still be a library of 30,000 books, 5,000 languages, plus a complete copy of Wikipedia, somewhere on the moon.Β

The only problem: We don’t know exactly where.Β

The library is a project of the Arch Foundation, the same company that gave Elon Musk a test copy of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy to put aboard his spacebound Tesla Roadster.Β

The Arch Lunar Library contains 100GB, or 30 million pages of text and pictures, literally embedded in 25 nickel disks in the tiniest type you can possibly imagine. You don’t need anything more specialized than a microscope to read it, and the etchings should survive for billions of years.Β

This library was supposed to be delivered to the surface of the moon β€” specifically, the Sea of Serenity β€” by Israel’s Beresheet Mission last week. The bad news: After a glitch that turned its engine off and on again at the worst possible moment, the Beresheet lander smashed into the moon at 300 miles per hour.

The good news: Those disks were designed to be indestructible. And the Arch Foundation is all but certain its payload survived the crash.

The landing was a little bumpier than expected, but airplane black boxes survive stronger impacts, and our disc is less breakable. Small, light objects, like our 100 gram library, do better in impacts. It was probably thrown a few km away – a 30 million page frisbee on the moon.

β€” Arch Mission Foundation (@archmission) April 12, 2019

β€œWe have either installed the first library on the moon,” says Arch Mission co-founder Nova Spivack, “or we have installed the first archaeological ruins of early human attempts to build a library on the moon.”

Some other items in that library for future alien archeologists to pore over: David Copperfield’s magic secrets, the Bible, an Israeli time capsule, and a queso recipe from a cafe in Texas.Β

The Foundation isn’t giving up on its lost moon library β€” and it wants your help in locating it. Spivack’s team has put together an open Google Doc with all the technical specs of the library alongside all details of the crash provided by SpaceIL, the Israeli nonprofit behind Beresheet. (SpaceIL collaborated with aerospace manufacturer Israel Aerospace Industries and Israel Space Agency, Israel’s NASA, on the lander.)

SEE ALSO: The accidental library: Why Elon Musk launched books to space that could last 14 billion years

It’s a math problem, basically, though one unlike any you ever encountered in school: If a spacecraft carrying a 100 gram object crashes on the moon at 300 miles an hour, how far away will that object land?Β

As the saying goes, β€œnever let a crash on the moon get in the way of a great treasure hunt”

β€” Nova Spivack (@novaspivack) April 14, 2019

Already one aerospace engineer has suggested that the impact crater should be large enough for the NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to spot β€” though it’s unlikely to be able to pick out anything as tiny as the little library that could.Β

SpaceIL has already announced that a second Beresheet mission will be attempted, perhaps with another library on board. Β In the meantime, as Spivack notes, “when you look at the Moon from now on, realize there is a lost library there containing Wikipedia, 30,000 books, 5,000 languages, and the history of the world.”

Not to mention a recipe for some pretty good queso.

Intel abandons 5G iPhone plans following Apple’s Qualcomm settlement

Welp, that was fast.

Just hours after Apple and Qualcomm announced that they’d finally settled their long-running legal battle, Intel says it’s abandoning its plans for a 5G smartphone modem.Β

β€œWe are very excited about the opportunity in 5G and the β€˜cloudification’ of the network, but in the smartphone modem business it has become apparent that there is no clear path to profitability and positive returns,” Intel CEO Bob Swan said in a statement.Β

SEE ALSO: What Apple and Qualcomm’s settlement means for the 5G iPhone

Prior to the Qualcomm settlement, Intel was Apple’s sole modem supplier for the iPhone XS and XR. And Intel was reportedly struggling to deliver its planned 5G modem, raising questions about whether Apple would even be able to deliver a 5G-ready iPhone in 2020.Β

Now that Qualcomm is back in the fold β€” the two companies reached a six-year licensing agreement and a “multi-year” chip supply deal β€” Apple no longer needs Intel. And Intel, which in the past has struggled to deliver its PC chips on schedule, has opted to ditch the project entirely.

The news would appear to suggest that Intel plans to eventually exit the smartphone modem business entirely. Intel said it will “continue to meet current customer commitments for its existing 4G smartphone modem product line,” and that it will “complete an assessment of the opportunities” for PC modems. The company will also make investments would be in its “5G network infrastructure business.”

While that’s great news for Qualcomm, whose stock shot up following news of the settlement, it does mean that Apple will be forced to once again rely on a single modem supplier, something Apple has tried to avoid in the past.Β
