Kia’s ‘spicy’ electric concept car makes an over-the-top debut at NY Auto Show

Kia’s new electric car is called the Niro EV. Now its electric concept car is the HabaNiro. Get it?

If the name is already too much, you won’t be able to handle the ridiculous details about the crossover compact SUV shown at the New York International Auto Show Wednesday.

SEE ALSO: Kia’s Imagine concept car uses 21 smartphones to mock dash screens

First, the not-so-hot-and-spicy specs: it’s an all-electric, all-wheel drive, four-seater with 300-mile range and full autonomy capability with butterfly-wing doors.

While the HabaNiro is just an idea, it could pave the way for future electric vehicles beyond the Niro, which recently went all electric after debuting as a hybrid vehicle a few years ago.

The outside of the HabaNiro naturally includes “lava red” panels on its sides and a “shark’s snout” grille up front with what Kia calls a slit-like gap with glossy black aluminum “teeth.” The wheels are widely set, so the car looks pretty stocky.

Inside the car, it’s very techy, with a retractable steering wheel for when the car is at maximum Level-5 autonomy and the occupants need more space. Instead of a rearview mirror, a 180-degree rear view display pops up whenever you glance in the area where a mirror usually is.

An eye tracking and emotion reader, shown at CES, follow the driver and judge their emotional state. The car can then change based on whether the driver seems angry, happy, or annoyed.

Kia says it won’t use this technology to manipulate drivers (like the car deciding to take you to a taco shop when you seem hungry), but it shows the potential to combine AI with cars.

It’s all very futuristic compared to what’s actually available in electric cars today, but it’s good to dream. Maybe those butterfly-wing doors will actually happen…eventually.

‘Assassin’s Creed’ developer is willing to help restore Notre-Dame

After a devastating fire caused major damage to the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris Moday, donations have poured in from around the globe. While money certainly helps, the church also needs a concrete plan on how to restore the damaged portions of the building, and Assassin’s Creed could be its saving grace.

The Notre-Dame Cathedral was featured as a fully explorable building in the 2014 Ubisoft video game Assassin’s Creed Unity, which is set in Paris during the French Revolution. Developers on the game spent 14 months recreating Notre-Dame for the digital world, a Ubisoft spokesperson told Mashable, with the structure becoming the game’s benchmark landmark for both player navigation and the visual standards of the game.

SEE ALSO: The most striking newspaper tributes to Notre-Dame

Although the Unity version of Notre-Dame represents the cathedral as it was in the late 1700s, it is still an impressive representation of the church as it looked right before the fire damaged the majority of its wooden structures and could be helpful as a reference in the restoration of the building.

“We would be more than happy to lend our expertise in any way”

In a statement regarding its involvement in the restoration process of Notre-Dame, an Ubisoft spokesperson said that the company is willing to help in any way it can, although the digital model of the building isn’t quite one to one with the real thing.

“It is important to keep in mind that what we did for the game was not a scientific reconstruction but rather an artistic vision,” the spokesperson said. “While we wanted to be very precise with details, there are some differences in terms of scale and with some elements. That being said, we would be more than happy to lend our expertise in any way that we can to help with these efforts.”

While at the moment Ubisoft has not been recruited by the church to help with restoration, the company did donate €500,000 to restoration efforts and has made Assassin’s Creed Unity free to play.

In solidarity with everyone moved by Monday’s events we’re donating to the restoration of Notre-Dame & giving you the chance to play @AssassinsCreed Unity on Uplay for free.

There’s one other recreation of the Notre-Dame Cathedral that could aid in its reconstruction — that of Vasser College architecture historian Andrew Tallon.

According to CBS News, Tallon spent years recreating the cathedral using photographs and laser technology, collecting a “billion points of data” on the structure which could be a key resource in the reconstruction.

Apple is developing its own LiDAR sensors, talking to potential sensor suppliers for self-driving cars: report

Apple's self-driving car project is still in the works.

By Alex Perry

We might not see the fruits of Apple’s self-driving car project for years, and it’s certainly hit some speed bumps along the way — but Apple isn’t quite ready to give up on self-driving cars yet.

Now, Reuters reports Apple has held discussions with at least four companies about having them potentially supply advanced LiDAR sensors for autonomous vehicles. The report also says that Apple is still working on its own LiDAR development.

SEE ALSO: Waymo’s new app lets you hail a self-driving car—but don’t get too excited just yet

For the uninitiated, LiDAR is short for “light detection and ranging.” It’s a type of technology commonly associated with self-driving cars because it has the ability to map out the environment around a car with 360 degrees of visibility. It can detect obstacles for the car to avoid, for example.

According to the Reuters report, Apple wants LiDAR sensors that are less bulky and easier to produce en masse than what is currently available. If Apple’s standards for LiDAR tech are as high as the Reuters report makes them out to be, that could explain why its self-driving car project has taken so long to get off the ground.

One of the worst-kept secrets in tech, Apple’s car project has been the subject of rumors for years. Apple has poached top talent from places like Tesla in order to get the project off the ground, but the company has yet to really acknowledge its existence or show anything for its efforts.

The project suffered layoffs earlier this year.

Even after years of speculation, it’s not clear what Apple’s car will even look like if and when it ever comes to pass. Apple could either build autonomous driving tech in partnership with an existing car manufacturer, or be really bold and try to build its own cars. Either way, analysts don’t expect to see Apple cars on roads for at least a few years

76ers Rumors: Philadelphia Tried to Hire Bob Myers After Bryan Colangelo Scandal

The Philadelphia 76ers reportedly tried to hire Bob Myers away from the Golden State Warriors after general manager Bryan Colangelo resigned in June 2018 following a Twitter scandal.

On Tuesday, Marc Stein of the New York Times reported the Sixers “commissioned a clandestine run” at Myers but couldn’t lure him away from the NBA‘s current gold standard organization.

Philly, which Stein previously noted also made a run at Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, ended up promoting former NBA center Elton Brand to fill the void in September 2018.

Brand endured a busy first season in the role, highlighted by a blockbuster trade to acquire Jimmy Butler from the Minnesota Timberwolves in November. He also made a deal for Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic and Mike Scott with the Los Angeles Clippers shortly before February’s trade deadline.

The 76ers finished the regular season with a 51-31 record to secure the third seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. With an extended rebuilding process finally completed, however, the team’s success will now be judged on how far the team goes in the postseason, not just reaching it.

“We believe we are in position to contend now and our moves reflect that belief,” Brand told reporters in February.

Meanwhile, it’s no surprise Myers has opted to remain in Golden State given the team’s star-studded roster and recent run of success, including three NBA titles in the past four years.

The Warriors’ offseason addition of DeMarcus Cousins, who suffered a torn left quadriceps muscle Monday night that’ll likely end his playoff run, showed the benefits of having sustained success. Veteran players are often willing to take less money to chase a championship.

Myers will face tougher challenges this offseason with Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Cousins all potential unrestricted free agents, making it a summer that could make or break the Dubs’ run of dominance.

Mueller report to be released on Thursday: What you won’t see

US Attorney General William Barr plans to release a redacted version of Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s report on the inquiry into Russia‘s role in the 2016 US election on Thursday – the keyword being “redacted”.

The Democrats’ demands for a full, unredacted version of Mueller’s report are likely to prompt a political and legal battle that could last for months, if not much longer.

The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Jerrold Nadler, has said he is prepared to issue subpoenas “very quickly” for the full report on Russia and Donald Trump‘s presidential campaign if it is released with blacked-out sections. And that would set the legal fight in motion.

Barr has said he is redacting four types of information from the report.

Congressional Democrats cite precedent from previous investigations in saying they want to see it all. But some Republicans defending Barr are also citing precedent, saying it is appropriate to keep at least some of the information from Congress and the public.

Here’s a look at what’s likely to be withheld, and why Democrats say the full report should be released.

Grand jury investigation

Barr has staked out his position on releasing secret grand jury information, saying last week that he would not go to court to request its release. He said Democrats are “free to go to court” themselves, and Nadler has said he is ready to do so.

Grand jury information, including witness interviews, is normally off limits but can be obtained in court. Some records were eventually released in the Whitewater investigation into former President Bill Clinton and an investigation into President Richard Nixon before he resigned.

Both of those cases were under somewhat different circumstances, including that the House Judiciary Committee had initiated impeachment proceedings. Federal court rules state that a court may order disclosure “preliminary to or in connection with a judicial proceeding”.

But Democrats have said they are not interested in impeachment, for now, and are likely to argue in court that they don’t need to be in an official impeachment proceeding to receive the materials.

Classified information

Congress frequently receives classified documents and briefings, and Democrats say there is no reason the Mueller report should be any different.

Many Republicans agree, including the top Republican on the intelligence committee, Devin Nunes, who wrote a rare joint letter in March with House intelligence committee Chairman Adam Schiff asking for “all materials, regardless of form or classification”.

In the letter, which was obtained by The Associated Press, Schiff and Nunes also asked for a private briefing from Mueller and his team.

Democrat Schiff has argued that some of that information should be released to the public, as well, citing Mueller indictments that have already revealed granular detail about the Russian effort to influence the 2016 election.

“All of that information at one point was classified, but the decision must have been made the public interest outweighs that. And I think a similar analysis should be undertaken here,” Schiff said on CNN this month.

Ongoing probes

Barr said he will redact information related to investigations connected to the Mueller probe that is still under way. Those include cases handed off or referred to federal prosecutors in Washington, DC, New York and Virginia.

Democrats have noted that the Justice Department has released such information before, including some related to Mueller’s own investigation while it was in progress. Republicans who were in the House majority last year, obtained documents related to the beginnings of the Russia investigation, arguing that officials were biased against then-candidate Trump.

Republicans argued at the time that it was necessary to obtain that information to maintain the integrity of the investigation.

Derogatory information

The Justice Department regularly redacts information about people who were interviewed or scrutinised in investigations but not charged. Barr has said he will black out information from the report “that would unduly infringe on the personal privacy and reputational interests of peripheral third parties”.

Asked by Senator Jeanne Shaheen, at a hearing last week if that meant he would redact information to protect the interests of Trump, Barr said it did not. “No, I’m talking about people in private life, not public officeholders,” Barr said.

That means that in addition to Trump, members of his family who work at the White House, such as his daughter Ivanka, could potentially be named if they were somehow entangled in Mueller’s investigation. But any information regarding his sons, Eric and Donald Trump Jr, who run his businesses, could be more likely to be redacted.

The Justice Department did release information about the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email practices more than two years ago, even though Clinton wasn’t charged. But that was after then-FBI Director James Comey made the much-questioned decision to publicly discuss that investigation. Barr signalled in his confirmation hearing in January that he would do things differently.

“If you’re not going to indict someone, then you don’t stand up there and unload negative information about the person,” Barr said. “That’s not the way the Department of Justice does business”

Watch Sophie Turner unleash mutant powers in ‘Dark Phoenix’ trailer

We know the old adage – absolute power corrupts, and all that. But Fox’s Dark Phoenix – the last film currently planned in the X-Men series that began with 2011’s First Class – asks what happens when you underestimate that power?

In the final trailer for Dark Phoenix, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) must learn to tame the massive telekinetic force inside her, or else risk destroying everyone she cares for.

Jean gets a visit from a mysterious expert (Jessica Chastain) who encourages her to explore her powers and be wary of the X-Men. We see her face off with a threatening Magneto (Michael Fassbender), who doesn’t stand a chance.

Dark Phoenix stands to course-correct or perhaps totally override 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, which notoriously killed off half the main cast including Phoenix herself. But in 2019, your faves dying on-screen is an almost fundamental part of going to the movies. And with the X-Men timeline reset since Days of Future Past, no one is safe.

Dark Phoenix hits theaters June 7.

Sophie Turner Admits Constant Criticism From Game Of Thrones Fans Took A Serious Mental Toll

Getty Images

Actress Sophie Turner opened up about her long-standing mental health issues on a recent episode of Dr. Phil’s podcast Phil in the Blanks, where she shared some surprising news.

The Game of Thrones star admitted that around the time she turned 17, she was hit with depression. This would have been around four years after beginning to film the epic fantasy series, and it stemmed from the repeated negative comments about her character, Sansa Stark.

“It’s weird,” she said. “I say I wasn’t very depressed when I was younger, but I used to think about suicide a lot when I was younger. I don’t know why though,” she said. “Maybe it’s just a weird fascination I used to have, but yeah, I used to think about it. I don’t think I ever would have gone through with it. I don’t know.”

Turner explained that the constant barrage of negativity about her looks, the character she portrayed, and other criticism lead her to that way of thinking.

“People used to say, ‘Damn, Sansa gained 10 pounds’ or ‘Damn, Sansa needs to lose 10 pounds’ or ‘Sansa got fat.’ It was just a lot of weight comments, or I would have spotty skin, because I was a teenager, and that’s normal, and I used to get a lot of comments about my skin and my weight and how I wasn’t a good actress,” she explained.

“I would just believe it. I would say, ‘Yeah, I am spotty. I am fat. I am a bad actress.’ I would just believe it. I would get [the costume department] to tighten my corset a lot. I just got very, very self-conscious.”

The mounting negativity crescendoed to a climax when Turner realized she no longer wished to leave the house, spend time with her friends, or do much of anything at all while dealing with the seemingly never-ending barrage of comments from supposed “fans” of the series.

“I just would cry and cry and cry over just getting changed and putting on clothes and be like, ‘I can’t do this. I can’t go outside. I have nothing that I want to do.”

Eventually, Turner sought therapy, and things began to improve. She hesitated to divulge the situation to her parents at first until they began noticing various bills for the visits, and then decided to let them in on her struggle. However, Turner states she’s suffered with her depression for “five or six years,” and while she’s in a much better place now, with fiancé Joe Jonas at her side and a supportive network of friends and family, she knows how she got there: therapy, medication, and learning to love herself.

“I’m on medication and I love myself now, or more than I used to, I think,” she shared. And now that Game of Thrones has finished filming, she will be taking a break from acting for a while to focus on her mental health. We wish her the very best – after bringing us one of the most complex characters on Game of Thrones for eight seasons, we’d say she’s absolutely deserved some time off, and hope she can relax, recharge, and come back to acting when she’s ready.

‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ adds free stage builder alongside DLC

In a surprise update, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch is getting its first DLC fighter and stage, a Stage Builder mode, a new video editing feature, and more.

Check out the full video on the update here:

Persona invades Smash

We knew about Joker from Persona 5 coming to Smash Ultimate, the first character in the game’s planned paid DLC releases, but Tuesday night was the first time we got to see what his actual moveset looks like.

Joker has his guns for ranged attacks, a knife for melee attacks, and a couple of magic moves (one of which looks very similar to Ness’s PK Fire attack) plus a grappling hook for recovery. The twist with Joker is his Rebellion Gauge that fills up when he takes damage or uses his Rebel’s Guard block move. When it’s full, Joker can unleash his persona Arsene, which improves a handful of his moves to help him dish more damage.

Along with the Joker, Smash Ultimate is introducing a new Memento stage inspired by Persona which changes colors based on the music track that’s playing.

This DLC alone costs $5.99 and is available now. Players can also purchase the All Challengers Pack for $24.99 which will unlock Wednesday’s new content plus the next four DLC fighters when they come out at later dates.

Creating custom content

A new Stage Builder feature has also been added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the free 3.0 update, allowing players to create their own unique stages with tons of customization options.

While custom stages have been a part of the Smash franchise for a while now, Ultimate‘s Stage Builder is certainly the most robust one, taking advantage of the Switch’s touch screen to allow players to draw their own creations and play around with them in imaginative ways.

The possibilities are endless with the Stage Builder.

The possibilities are endless with the Stage Builder.

Image: nintendo

You can make objects move, spin, and twist on stages, you can draw your own shapes, and you can add unique obstacles and items to stages. The Stage Builder doesn’t just stick to two dimensions either; players can work in layers to create fully realized designs with backgrounds and foregrounds to aid their visions.

Custom stages are able to be shared online and downloaded by other players, and if you like a certain stage builder’s work you can follow them and see when they release new content.

Along those lines, Smash Ultimate is also adding advanced video editing features to help players create fun and cool videos of their Smash action and share them online.

It’s nice to see Nintendo adding these new free features to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate rather than just sticking to paid content. With four more fighters still set to join the fray in the future, hopefully there will be more additions to keep the game fresh for players who aren’t exactly interested in paying for new fighters.

By Stan Schroeder

Small smartphone aficionados, rejoice: Apple is reportedly looking to launch a 4.7-inch version of the iPhone in March next year.

Coming from Chinese outlet Economic Daily News (via MacRumors), the report claims this new iPhone would actually be a sort of reboot of the iPhone 8, which also had a 4.7-inch screen.

SEE ALSO: What to know about Apple’s legal battle with Qualcomm

According to the report, the idea behind this model is similar to the idea behind the iPhone SE: Apple will repack old tech into a refreshed package, and offer that at a lower price point than current top models, making it more attractive to consumers in emerging markets.

Hardware-wise, the new phone will have Apple’s A13 processor, a single rear camera, and will start at 128GB of storage. On the outside, it will stay similar to the iPhone 8’s design, including the home button and the big bezels. The price of the phone would be around $649 — for reference, the 64GB iPhone 8 currently costs at $599.

As it ramps up the expansion of its services business, Apple has been widening its iPhone lineup to include older, more affordable models. Currently, besides the flagship iPhone XS and XS Max, that lineup includes the new but cheaper iPhone XR, the Phone 8, which came out a year and a half ago, and even the iPhone 7, which launched in September 2016.
