Zarif slams US silence on Saudi Arabia mass executions

Iran‘s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has criticised the administration of US President Donald Trump for not condemning a mass execution of prisoners in Saudi Arabia.

On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia beheaded 37 of its citizens for what it said were “terrorism” related crimes, publicly pinning two of the bodies to a pole as a warning to others.

“After a wink at the dismembering of a journalist, not a whisper from the Trump administration when Saudi Arabia beheads 37 men in one day – even crucifying one two days after Easter,” Zarif said on Twitter, referring to the killing of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi at the hands of Saudi agents in October.

“Membership of the #B_team – Bolton, Bin Salman, Bin Zayed & “Bibi” – give immunity for any crime,” Zarif added, referring to the US national security adviser and the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Israel.

— Javad Zarif (@JZarif) April 23, 2019

The tweet came ahead of Zarif’s controversial visit the US, where he was set to speak at the Asia Society, an NGO, in New York City on Wednesday.

Tehran and Washington have taken in tit-for-tat measures to label each other’s military as “terrorist” recently, following the Trump administration’s decision on Monday to end waivers for country’s importing oil for Iran.

Executions

Saudi Arabia’s interior ministry said in a statement that the prisoners were found guilty of attacking security installations with explosives, killing a number of security officers, and cooperating with “enemy organisations” against the interests of the country.

However, rights group Amnesty International said most of those executed were Shia men “convicted after sham trials that violated international fair trial standards (and) which relied on confessions extracted through torture”.

The sentences were carried out in Riyadh, the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina, central Qassim province, and Eastern Province, home to the country’s Shia minority.

The men were executed “for adopting terrorist and extremist thinking and for forming terrorist cells to corrupt and destabilise security”, a statement by the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said.

Two of the executed men’s bodies were publicly hung from a pole for several hours in a process that is not frequently used by the kingdom and has sparked controversy for its grisly display.

Between 2015 and 2017, Saudi Arabia has executed about 150 prisoners per year, according to rights groups.

Iran, however, is believed to execute the most people per capita, according to rights groups, but Tehran insists that the numbers these groups allege are exaggerated.

Rosia Montana: Seeds of utopia in town almost lost to gold mining

Transylvania, Romania – In 2013, Rosia Montana was almost destroyed to make way for a gold mine – plans that continue to haunt the village which sits in the Apuseni Mountains of western Transylvania.

Six years ago, Gabriel Resources, a Canadian company, came close to destroying “red mountain” to build Europe’s largest gold mine.

Tens of thousands of people protested weekly for months in a row to defend the commune, eventually forcing the government halt plans to build the mine, but the company did not give up.

In 2015, it sued Romania before of the ICSID, the World Bank arbitration court, asking for a reported four billion dollars in damages.

At the time, Gabriel Resources had already purchased much property in the village; only those determined to fight until the end stayed.

While the arbitration case advanced out of public sight in Washington, new people started moving into Rosia.

Activists, architects, artists and free spirits can now be found here creating a new kind of community, one based on neighbourly cooperation.

In 2017, riding the wave of public sympathy for Rosia Montana, a technocratic government submitted an application to UNESCO to make it a World Heritage Site. The village has a history of two millennia and it hosts Roman mining galleries and architecture spanning centuries.

Even as UNESCO indicated the village was likely to get international protection, Romania’s new Social-Democratic government withdrew the application in 2018.

Activists feared this meant Romania was gearing up to cut a deal with the company.

Today, Rosia Montana is in limbo.

People who want to renovate buildings or start businesses say they struggle to get permits as the mine might still go ahead.

Yet the local community is flourishing.

Fashionable youngsters, bikers and herbal medicine aficionados co-exist alongside retired miners, village priests and peasants, in a throwback to the multiethnic, multi-faith past of Rosia Montana.

This motley society has its shared myths, forged in the years battling the mining plan, and a common vision for the future.

Rosia has a strong international brand, they say, and the village is ready for reconstruction.

Corina Suteu, Romania’s former minister of culture, said missing out on the UNESCO stamp could hinder restructuring efforts and hold the area back from becoming a rich tourist hub and ecological site.

Earlier this year, in a move that has alarmed the local community and activists, the Romanian government proposed a draft mining law which would make it easy to grant new permits for the mine previously denied by national authorities or courts.

“The new law is a confirmation and a first physical step towards a settlement and the still possible go-ahead for the mine,” said Stephanie Roth, an activist who received the Goldman Environmental Prize for campaigning against the mine.

Suteu added: “What is certain is that this region continues to be protected by national law.

“Any attempts to reverse this protection are not in line with the national interest and a public agenda of protecting patrimony.”

What’s at stake as Kim Jong Un meets President Putin in Russia?

Kim Jong Un has arrived in Russia for a summit with President Vladimir Putin, just two months after the North Korean leader’s meeting with US President Donald Trump in Vietnam that ended abruptly.

Analysts say the Russia-North Korea summit scheduled for Thursday will serve as a reminder to Washington that the North Korean leader has other options in the region backing his leadership.

The failed summit in Vietnam meant that Kim was unable to get the sanctions relief he sought from the United States. He is unlikely to get that in his meeting with Putin as well.

But while Russia fully enforces the sanctions it voted to impose on Pyongyang, it has joined China in calling for loosening the punishment in recognition of steps taken in limiting North Korea’s weapons testing.

Why Russia?

Russia’s relations with North Korea date back to the latter’s foundation. Moscow also helped rebuild North Korea after the 1950-53 Korean War.

The Russian president is experienced in dealing with North Korean leaders. He visited Pyongyang in 2000 and met Kim Jong Il a few times.

The ties were affected after the fall of the Soviet Union but Kim Jong Un’s father worked towards renewing them following Putin’s election as president in 2000 and visited the country three times.

North Korea also sees Russia as an old and reliable neighbour that is not trying to meddle in domestic policies and wants stability on the Korean Peninsula, according to Georgy Toloraya, a North Korean scholar at the Moscow State Institute of International Affairs, who termed the talks “timely” following the Vietnam summit.

Cho Han bum, a senior research fellow at the Korea Institute for National Unification, said Kim had been in a “catch-22” situation ever since the Vietnam summit collapse.

“North Koreans are in despair with no hope for sanctions relief,” Cho told Al Jazeera.

“China can’t help as it is in the middle of a trade war with the US and Kim can’t visit Beijing because he might lose face if he makes his fifth China trip.”

What’s on the agenda?

Kim has two urgent concerns as he heads to the summit – North Korean labourers in Russia and the food shortage in his country.

Around 10,000 North Korean labourers are still employed in Russia. All of them will have to leave the country by the end of the year as a 2017 UN sanctions resolution takes effect.

The labourers, who previously numbered as many as 50,000, provided Pyongyang with more than $500m in foreign exchange annually, according to documents seen by Reuters news agency.

“Maybe, the numbers will stop decreasing after Kim’s visit,” said Dmitry Zhuravlev, director general of the Institute of Regional Issues in Moscow.

The labourers’ presence is crucial in Russia’s underpopulated provinces that have plenty of fallow land, timber and natural resources but they are “large enough and there is enough room for the Koreans”, added Zhuravlev.

Kim is also looking at the possibility of a food shortage in North Korea this summer. Russia has shown a willingness to provide humanitarian aid.

Last month, it announced it had shipped more than 2,000 tonnes of wheat to the North Korean port of Chongjin.

What does Russia want?

The Kremlin considers this visit a key development in the settlement of the Korean nuclear crisis.

“At the centre of attention will be the political and diplomatic solution to the Korean Peninsula’s nuclear problem,” Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov told a news conference on Tuesday.

On Friday, Putin’s spokesperson Dmitri Peskov said that the two leaders will discuss “bilateral ties”, followed by the “issues of denuclearisation, regional partnership”.

Putin does not seem to be a believer in Washington’s use of sanctions as a political tool but the Russian president will be cautious about making any big new commitments, analysts say, as he is set to fly to Beijing for a major international meeting on China’s “Belt and Road” initiative.

What Kim hopes to gain?

North Korea is also looking to develop economic ties with Russia to lessen its dependency on China.

“It is important for Kim to understand what Russia can do in the field of economy,” said Andrey Fyodorov, a former deputy foreign minister. “Without Russia and China, it is impossible [for North Korea] to get out of the crisis.”

North Korea has long depended on China as its primary trading partner. Kim has also pushed Seoul hard to participate in joint inter-Korean projects to rebuild its railroads and improve its moribund infrastructure.

According to officials, trade between Russia and North Korea fell from $60m in 2017 to $34m in 2018 because of the sanctions.

“Kim and Putin are expected to announce improved bilateral relations. Putin will announce his support for the step-by-step approach to denuclearisation,” said Cho.

“In addition, there’s not much for the two to gain from this summit. There is nothing for Russia to do for North Korea in terms of military and economic cooperation under the large-scale sanctions.”

Unlike China, Russia has a very small footprint in the North. Officials have long talked about big projects, including rail routes to Europe, or pipelines across the Korean Peninsula but there are reports that Putin hasn’t shown much interest in carrying them out.

Will this affect US-North Korea talks?

The Vietnam summit was the second set of talks between North Korean and US leaders.

The historic summit in Singapore last year, which came after months of growing tensions marked by nuclear and missile tests, fresh sanctions and threats of “total destruction”, ended with a vague statement that has failed to produce tangible progress.

“The summit will not make any difference to the Washington-Pyongyang relations,” said Cho.

“It won’t provide a breakthrough either. Recently, Stephen Biegun, US special envoy for North Korea, visited Russia with its deputy foreign minister and to deliver messages to Russia that Trump administration does not want the phased approach to North Korea’s denuclearisation.”

With the win, the Trail Blazers took the seven-game series 4-1.

Lillard, who scored 34 points in the first half alone, went 17-of-33 from the field and 10-of-18 from deep. He also added seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.

The Blazers trailed 107-92 with 7:12 left in the fourth quarter, but Portland went on a 26-8 run to end the game.

With Portland down 115-113, Lillard hit a two-pointer with 32.8 seconds left to tie the game. After a Russell Westbrook miss, Lillard got the ball from Al-Farouq Aminu, wound the clock down and hit his second career game-winning, buzzer-beating shot to end a playoff series. The first occurred against the Houston Rockets in 2014, with Lillard leading the Blazers to a first-round win.

Moe Harkless and CJ McCollum each scored 17 for the Blazers. Paul George led the Thunder with 36 points, and Westbrook added a 29-point, 14-assist, 11-rebound triple-double.

Jamal Murray Erupts as Nuggets Take 3-2 Series Lead vs. LaMarcus Aldridge, Spurs

DENVER, CO - APRIL 23: Nikola Jokic #15 of the Denver Nuggets high-fives Jamal Murray #27 of the Denver Nuggets against the San Antonio Spurs during Game Five of Round One of the 2019 NBA Playoffson April 23, 2019 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. Jamal Murray posted a game-high 23 points and Nikola Jokic added 16 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists as the No. 2 seed Denver Nuggets beat the No. 7 San Antonio Spurs 108-90 in Game 5 of their NBA Western Conference first-round playoff series Tuesday.

Denver, which made 50.0 percent of its shot attempts, led by 11 at the half and 22 following the third quarter en route to the 18-point blowout.

LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan each scored 17 points for San Antonio, who fell behind 3-2 in the best-of-seven series.

Nikola Jokic’s Passing, Defense the Keys to Series Turnaround

The Nuggets looked like they were in serious trouble after losing Game 3, 118-108.

Denver needed to win one game in San Antonio, where the team had lost 14 straight games, in order to have a chance at winning the series.

Sure enough, the Nuggets did just that with a 117-103 win, and they followed that up with their 18-point victory on Tuesday

Numerous reasons exist for the turnaround, which include a starting lineup change, a resurgent bench and some improved backcourt shooting.

Those reasons pale in comparison to Jokic’s passing and defense, which have been sensational.

Jokic’s passing has always been sharp, but his chemistry with the Nuggets guards was the difference in a 53-42 halftime edge.

Check out the masterful two-man game here, which ended in an easy Murray layup.

Jokic also got a nice hockey assist, which eventually led to a Gary Harris three:

Nick Kosmider of The Athletic gave Jokic a well-deserved shout-out:

Nick Kosmider @NickKosmider

Nikola Jokic is absolutely picking San Antonio’s defense apart. That was his seventh assist of the game already.

However, Jokic’s defense was on point all night.

That trend started in Game 4, which Chris Dempsey of Altitude Sports pointed out:

Chris Dempsey @chrisadempsey

The #Nuggets defense against SAS post-ups has been exemplary: Spurs are shooting just 29 percent (9/31) on post-ups in the series. Nikola Jokic has been great against LaMarcus Aldridge in post ups. Aldridge has barely scored vs. Jokic in post ups.

His excellent play only continued in Game 5. Harrison Wind of BSN Denver complimented Jokic’s effort:

Harrison Wind @HarrisonWind

You gotta give the Nuggets credit for how well they adjusted their defensive scheme after Game 3, and Jokic is giving about as much effort as I’ve seen him give on the defensive end of the floor all season. He’s still slicing up the Spurs on offense too. Already 7 asts for him.

Jokic notably turned away a Derrick White shot here:

Denver Nuggets @nuggets

Nah, bruh.

#MileHighBasketball https://t.co/3r0DTCywo2

Paul Garcia of Project Spurs pointed out Denver’s struggles in the restricted area, specifically Aldridge:

Paul Garcia @PaulGarciaNBA

The Spurs shot 6/16 from the restricted area in the first half https://t.co/2G9MxgZpRs

If Jokic continues finding Nuggets guards for high-percentage shots and his defense continues to confound the Spurs, then this series will be over in six barring a San Antonio three-point barrage at home.

Spurs’ Three-Point Shooting Crucial to Force Game 7

The Spurs are the NBA’s No. 1 three-point shooting team, which helped catapult them into the playoffs despite a defense that ranked tied for No. 18 in efficiency during the season, according to ESPN.com.

The defense has largely been better after the All-Star break, with the team noticeably finishing 10th in defensive rating, per NBA.com.

However, the Spurs’ defensive efforts have resembled their first-half form over the last two games, and their offense hasn’t been good enough to compensate for it.

Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News pointed out the deadly combination:

Tom Orsborn @tom_orsborn

Nuggets 53, Spurs 42. Bad Spurs defense, aided by poor shooting, is back.

And former Nuggets great Alex English compared the two teams’ ball movements. One was hard to defend, and one proved much easier:

Alex English @AlexEnglish_2

@Nuggets moving the ball and cutting @Spurs throwing it in to Aldridge and standing and waiting. Got to pass and cut Jokic picking them apart on offense #NBAPlayoffs #MileHighBasketball

Ultimately, the key to forcing Game 7 may simply lie in San Antonio’s ability to shake off its three-point shooting slump and get hot from deep.

It’s easier said than done, of course, but the Spurs can’t win if Denver stays potent from the arc. Denver has hit 29-of-64 three-pointers over its last two games for a 45.3 percent success rate.

On the other end, Spurs starters combined to hit just three three-pointers in seven tries on Tuesday. The bench shot just 4-of-17 from beyond the arc, following up a 5-of-17 night for the team as a whole in Game 4.

Ultimately, the Spurs will be lucky to see Denver’s offense, which ESPN.com ranked ninth in efficiency, fail again in this series after finding a groove in recent games. San Antonio’s defense just isn’t good enough to hang with Denver in a seven-game series, which has been clearly evident this week.

Here’s the good news for Spurs fans: San Antonio is generally a far better outside shooting team than Denver, and that could be the difference in Game 6.

During the season, San Antonio shot 39.2 percent from the field, while Denver finished tied for 17th in the league by hitting 35.1 percent of their makes.

The Nuggets scored 21 more points from beyond the arc than the Spurs on Tuesday. That naturally isn’t going to fly on Thursday in Game 6.

Also, the Spurs will be home, where they hit 41.6 percent of their threes this year. Denver is also a poor road team, going 20-21.

The bottom line is the Spurs have no answer for Jokic, and they have no response for Murray if the third-year guard enters one of his patented hot streaks. Gary Harris also looks like the Gary Harris from last season after struggling with injuries this year.

Therefore, the key for the Spurs forcing Game 7 may be simply outshooting them from deep. It’s easier said than done, but that should end up being the difference.

What’s Next?

San Antonio will host Denver for Game 6 on Thursday evening.

Hong Kong’s ‘Occupy Central’ activists handed prison sentences

A court in Hong Kong has handed down prison sentences of up to 16 months to eight leaders of massive 2014 pro-democracy protests.

Nine leaders of the city’s “Occupy Central” protests that paralysed parts of the former British colony for 79 days in late 2014 were convicted last month of public nuisance offenses.

One other defendant, Tanya Chan, had her sentencing postponed because of the need to undergo surgery.

Wednesday’s decision follows a closely watched trial lasting almost a month and comes at a time when Hong Kong’s freedoms and autonomy have come under increasing strain from China’s Communist Party leaders, stoking concern from foreign governments, rights groups and businesspeople.

The 2014 Occupy demonstrations, which pushed for genuine, full democracy in Hong Kong, blocked roads in three important districts – Admiralty, Causeway Bay and Mong Kok – and drew more than a million people over nearly three months, organisers estimated.

Nine defendants, including law professor Benny Tai, 54, retired sociologist Chan Kin-man, 60, and retired pastor Chu Yiu-ming, 75, were found guilty of at least one public nuisance charge each over their roles in planning and mobilising supporters during the protest.

All nine pleaded not guilty and argued the “umbrella” movement was intended as peaceful, non-violent civil disobedience, serving no motive other than to benefit society and make positive democratic progress.
