Chiefs Suspend Tyreek Hill After Audio Leaks About Alleged Child, Domestic Abuse

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill has been suspended from all team activities after an audio recording made by his fiancee, Crystal Espinal, was made public Thursday by KCTV 5.

In the recording, Hill and Espinal discuss a broken arm suffered by their three-year-old son. Espinal asks Hill if he’s responsible for the injury, and Hill denies that he is.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said in a statement on the matter that the team was “deeply disturbed” and “deeply concerned” with what it heard in the recording, per 41 Action News:

41 Action News @41actionnews

MOMENTS AGO: Kansas City Chiefs GM Brett Veach announced the team has suspended wide receiver Tyreek Hill from all team activities pending an investigation. https://t.co/ImbUfTPRbo

“Earlier this evening, we were made aware of the audio between Tyreek and Crystal,” Veach said. “…Tyreek Hill will not take part in any team activities. We’re going to gather more information, we’re going to evaluate this information, and we’ll make the right decision regarding Tyreek Hill.”

Steve Vockrodt and Brooke Pryor of the Kansas City Star reported March 15 that Hill was involved in an investigation by the Overland Park Police Department for an alleged battery “that lists a juvenile as the victim.” A source told the Kansas City Star that the victim was the couple’s son.

Per TMZ Sports, Hill was named on a March 5 police report as a person involved in a child abuse/neglect case. The case was closed and prosecution was declined three days later.

Johnson County District Attorney Stephen Howe announced April 24 that no charges would be filed against Hill or Espinal. He did note the investigation determined a crime occurred, but the evidence does not conclusively establish who committed the crime.”

The day after Howe made his announcement, KCTV 5 released the audio clip of Hill and Espinal talking about their son’s broken arm.

Pryor posted transcriptions of the audio recording on Twitter:

Brooke Pryor @bepryor

From the recording:

Crystal: He’s scared of you. He’s terrified. And you grabbed onto him, somehow or he fell, one of the two.
Tyreek: I didn’t do nothing. That’s sad. That’s sad bro. That’s sad.
Crystal: Then why does (he) say Daddy did it? Why did he say Daddy did it?

Brooke Pryor @bepryor

Espinal: “And you open up his arms and you punch him in the chest.”

Espinal also said in the recording that Tyreek Hill used a belt on their 3-year-old.

Hill was previously arrested in December 2014 while playing college football at Oklahoma State after Espinal told the Stillwater Police Department he punched and choked her.

He received three years of probation after pleading guilty to domestic assault and battery by strangulation in August 2015. Oklahoma State also dismissed him from the football team as a result.

The guilty plea was withdrawn and the case dismissed and expunged from Hill’s record in August 2018 after the player completed probation.

The Chiefs selected Hill in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft. He has led the team in receiving yards in each of the past two seasons.

It’s Here: Taylor Swift Is Back And Bubblier Than Ever In New ‘ME!’ Video

YouTube

The TS7 era has officially begun, and it’s all about “ME!”

Taylor Swift‘s much-hyped new single arrived on Friday (April 26) and features noted Swiftie Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco (because apparently once you bring Urie into a project, you’d better tack on some exclamation points as well). “ME!” is a bubbly, buoyant lesson in self-love, confidence, and awesomeness, marking a stark turn from Swift’s polarizing sixth album, reputation.

The video — which Swift co-directed with Dave Meyers — opens on a slithering pink snake that bursts into a flock of butterflies, signifying what you probably already know: she’s shed her skin, let go of her grudges, and is ready to have fun again. And the rest of the video is super fun! After a French-speaking spat with Urie, the two dance around a pastel-soaked town while affirming, “I’m the only one of me” and “you can’t spell awesome without me.” Indeed, Taylor’s back and she seems to be happier than ever.

Swift announced “ME!” just hours before its release, during an interview with Robin Roberts that aired live on ABC. She told Roberts, “‘ME!’ is a song about embracing your individuality and really celebrating it and owning it. I think that with a pop song, we have the ability to get a melody stuck in people’s heads, and I just want it to be one that makes them feel better about themselves.”

The release of “ME!” follows months of endless clues, theories, and speculation about Swift’s new era. She switched up her Instagram aesthetic earlier this year, ditching the reputation-era snakes in favor of something resembling a Lisa Frank mood board: rainbow hues, palm trees, glitter, butterflies, and heart-shaped diamonds filled her feed. Then, last week, she launched a countdown clock, counting down to April 26. (That, of course, is the same day Avengers: Endgame hits theaters, but Swift isn’t afraid of a little publicity competition, it seems.)

Finally, in the hours before Thursday’s announcement, Swift dropped heavier and heavier hints, posting photos of herself captioned with “ME!” and with butterfly emojis. She also shared pics and videos of her visiting a butterfly-winged mural she commissioned in Nashville that has “ME!” written in block letters.

In her interview with Roberts, Swift said she’s inspired by dedicated fans who have been patiently waiting for new music from her. “I can’t believe how much they care,” she said. “It makes it more fun for me to create music videos knowing they’ll care about little easter eggs or clues or hints.”

So, Swifties, you heard our girl: Get to work mining “ME!” for clues!

Robert Griffin III was once the Redskins’ franchise quarterback, so he was uniquely qualified to comment on the move:

Robert Griffin III @RGIII

You didn’t draft the young man for nothing. You did it because you believe in the young man. You did it because you need a Quarterback. Don’t give up on him prematurely. He is your investment. Give the kid time to prove himself. Congrats young gun!!! Enjoy every second of it!

The 21-year-old Haskins only started one season for Ohio State, but that was more than enough time to establish himself as one of the top passers in the 2019 class.

The redshirt sophomore laid waste to the Buckeyes’ record book in 2018. He threw for 4,831 yards, 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Congrats Young Simba! 🦁 @dh_simba7 https://t.co/ojZVl9igl8

Nobody was surprised to see Haskins declare for the 2019 draft, and his decision might have been easier after Justin Herbert confirmed last December he was returning to Oregon for his senior year.

One of the bigger questions about Haskins’ NFL potential has little to do with him specifically and more to do with his former head coach, Urban Meyer.

[Meyer] has had one decent NFL quarterback [Alex Smith] ever come out of his system,” one NFL scouting director told Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller. “That s–t will keep you up at night.”

Haskins wasn’t the typical Meyer-style quarterback, though; he was far more of a pocket passer than Smith, Tim Tebow, J.T. Barrett or Braxton Miller.

Haskins completed 70.0 percent of his passes and averaged 9.1 yards per attempt in 2018. Tebow, by comparison, had a 66.4 percent completion rate and averaged 9.3 yards per throw over four years, while Smith owned a 66.3 percent clip with 8.9 yards per attempt.

Haskins also had 533 attempts, well ahead of Tebow’s (350) and Smith’s (317) single-season highs.

Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon explained the contrast in further detail:

“Haskins can process and adjust quickly, leading to surgical efficiency. That mental prowess will allow for a cleaner transition to the NFL. The strengths on his scouting report will also feature the elite traits necessary for a successful pro career. …

“No, he’s not a perfect prospect. Haskins’ footwork and activity rate in the pocket must be refined, and his mobility is largely limited to buying extra time.

“That’s a distinct change from previous Meyer quarterbacks, who regularly put up decent numbers but were most effective when running. Yet with the help of offensive coordinator Ryan Day, Meyer’s replacement, Haskins thrived as a pass-first, pass-second talent.”

Miller ranked Haskins as the No. 2 QB available and compared him to three-time Pro Bowler Carson Palmer.

Quarterback was a clear area of need for Washington coming into the draft. One could argue the Redskins reached slightly for Haskins, but that was necessary in order to secure one of this year’s best quarterbacks.

He should more than justify the investment.

Alex Smith broke his fibula and tibia last November, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported he could miss the entire 2019 season.

Even if Smith gets back in time to play a game or two in 2019, he turned 35 in May and is coming off a significant injury. His days as an effective starter could be numbered.

E-scooters aren’t going anywhere — in fact, their numbers are still growing

    The scooters.... they're multiplying!
    The scooters…. they’re multiplying!

    Image: vicky leta / mashable

    By Sasha Lekach

The number of scooters in cities around the world is quickly growing.

Though communities like San Francisco and Santa Monica, Calif. limited the number of scooters companies could offer for rent last year, other cities are still seeing a major increase in the number of available electric two-wheelers.

On Thursday, Lime announced that its scooters and bicycles reached 50 million trips since launching mid-2017. That’s enough mileage to circle the globe twice. Those trips come from a growing, global bike- and-scooter share network that reaches 100 cities in more than 20 countries, and five continents. The latest places Lime e-scooters have landed: Bogota, Colombia and Montevideo, Uruguay. Lime also said its had more than 15 million sign-ups.

In the U.S., Austin, San Diego, and Atlanta are just some of the cities where you can find scooters from a wide range of rental companies like Bird, Lime, Uber’s Jump, Lyft, Bolt, Ford’s Spin, and others. Portland, Oregon, is launching a new yearlong pilot Friday after the success of a smaller one last year. The program will start with 2,500 scooters and could increase by the end of the year to 15,000.

Even San Francisco last week doubled the fleet size for the two e-scooter operators allowed in the city.

The National Association of City Transportation Officials, which tracks shared micromobility usage throughout the U.S., puts 38.5 million trips on e-scooters in 2018, surpassing bike-share trips (36.5 million trips) for the first time. Throughout 100 U.S. cities NACTO tallied about 85,000 e-scooters available for rent. Other companies are moving beyond American cities, like Bird throughout Europe and in Tel Aviv.

Where all those scooters hang out.

Where all those scooters hang out.

    Image: nacto

Scoot — known for both its red e-scooters and electric mopeds — expanded to Santiago, Chile, and Barcelona, Spain last year, moving well beyond the confines of San Francisco. Madrid has 18 different e-scooter-share companies operating within city limits. In Singapore, 14 scooter companies have applied to bring its fleets there.

William Henderson, CEO and co-founder of Ride Report, a software system that connects cities with scooter operators and scooter data, has watched bicycle advocacy fight for space and infrastructure in cities over the years, but with scooters, “all of a sudden we have this tremendous growth.” After working with different cities, he’s seen demand for scooter-share services continue and not just blip out after the first few months. “This is serving a real need to get around cities efficiently and affordably,” he added.

Lime also released more demographics about its U.S. riders, like how 33 percent are female and 36 identifying as people of color. One-third of Lime riders earn $50,000 or less, according to its rider reports.

SEE ALSO: E-scooter injuries keep piling up

A survey of San Francisco scooter riders (on Skip and Scoot vehicles only) released last week at city program’s mid-way point found some different breakdowns, with scooter-riders 82 percent male, 63 percent white, and 68 percent with an income of more than $100,000.

Kim Jong Un: US acted in bad faith at Vietnam talks

The United States acted in “bad faith” in Vietnam where President Donald Trump and his team held talks with North Korea, its leader Kim Jong Un said during a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump and Kim met in Hanoi in February but the talks ended abruptly and a joint signing ceremony was cancelled. Trump said North Korea’s demand that the US lift economic sanctions in their entirety forced his team to walk away from reaching an agreement. North Korean officials denied they demanded sanctions to be removed entirely.

On Thursday, at his first summit with Russia’s Putin in the far eastern Russian port of Vladivostok, Kim said “the situation on the Korean peninsula and the region is now at a standstill and has reached a critical point”, the Korean Central News Agency reported.

The North Korean leader also warned that the situation “may return to its original state as the US took an unilateral attitude in bad faith at the recent second DPRK-US summit talks”.

Trump says sanctions on North Korea to stay in place

“Peace and security on the Korean peninsula will entirely depend on the US future attitude, and the DPRK will gird itself for every possible situation,” KCNA quoted Kim as saying.

Russia has already called for the sanctions to be eased, while the US has accused it of trying to help Pyongyang evade some of the measures – accusations Moscow denies.

Just a week ago, Pyongyang demanded the removal of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from the stalled nuclear talks, accusing him of derailing the process.

On Thursday, Putin emerged from the meeting saying that like Washington, Moscow supported efforts to reduce tension on the Korean peninsula and prevent nuclear conflicts.

But he also insisted that the North needed “guarantees of its security, the preservation of its sovereignty”.

“We need to… return to a state where international law, not the law of the strongest, determines the situation in the world,” said Putin.

Experts say the true purpose of Kim’s visit to Russia was a chance to leave himself some wiggle room when talks with the US resume – and to use Russia as the bogeyman if Trump goes too far with his threats.

“This is the breakthrough the [North] Korean side needed to tell the US: ‘Look, we have normal ties with Moscow, if something happens, we will run to them for protection, stop waving your fists,’” Dmitry Zhuravlev, director general of the Institute of Regional Issues, a Moscow think-tank, told Al Jazeera.

Moscow still has veto power in the United Nations Security Council, and it wants to play a role in anything related to North Korea.

The nations share a border, and Russia serves as a workplace for at least 10,000 North Korean labour migrants, an important source of hard currency for Pyongyang.

Russia does not want a nuclear disaster next door, but its interest in the disarmament of North Korea is limited; the fall of the Kim dynasty would likely mean that a unified Korea becomes a US ally, and American military bases could appear next to Russia’s Pacific provinces.

The meeting was Kim’s first with another head of state since returning from Hanoi.

It followed repeated invitations from Putin after Kim embarked on a series of diplomatic overtures last year.

Since March 2018, the North Korean leader has held four meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, three with South Korea’s Moon Jae-in, two with Trump and one with Vietnam’s president.

Putin told reporters that he would fill in Washington on the results of the talks.

“There are no secrets here, no conspiracies… Chairman Kim himself asked us to inform the American side of our position,” said Putin.

Trump’s Biden insults fueled by belief he can win

    2020 elections

The president sees the former vice president as his biggest threat in 2020, a Republican strategist says.

Hours after Joe Biden posted an online video announcing his 2020 White House bid, President Donald Trump responded on Twitter. “Welcome to the race Sleepy Joe,” Trump taunted the former vice president on Thursday. “I only hope you have the intelligence, long in doubt, to wage a successful primary campaign.”

Trump’s insults were actually masking respect — and genuine concern about Biden’s potential to win, Trump advisers say.

    Story Continued Below

As early as last fall, Trump was talking privately with aides about the threat Biden posed: “How are we gonna beat Biden?” he would ask. When reassured that the moderate Biden would never defeat several of his more liberal rivals, Trump has pushed back: “But what if he does?”

The conversations, relayed by a Republican strategist with direct knowledge of the interactions, reflect the president’s assessment that Biden poses the biggest threat to his re-election, uniquely capable of competing with him in the Rust Belt states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania that carried him to victory in 2016.

That may also be because, of the 20 Democrats running for president, none has quite as much in common with Trump as Joe Biden.

The two men share some defining traits. Trump is 72 and Biden is 76. They are generational peers who have appealed to voters with a raw, unscripted approach to politics. Both have a proven ability to win over blue-collar voters without a college education — Americans who were once solid Democrats but who have increasingly migrated to the GOP.

They share some of the same weaknesses, too. Both are famous for talking far more often and for much longer than their aides would like. Both are prone to remarks that induce cringes even among their supporters.

Biden’s official entry into the race capped two years of mudslinging between him and the president. The two senior citizens have even engaged in verbal fisticuffs, with Biden telling a crowd at the University of Miami in March 2018 that he would have “beat the hell out of Trump” if they were in high school, given the president’s crude remarks about women.

Trump responded that the former vice president “would go down fast and hard, crying all the way. Don’t threaten people Joe!”

Biden has been on the president’s political radar for several months. Trump has long known that the former vice president, who considered a bid in 2016, was likely to run in 2020.

As far back as March 2018, Trump was crowd-testing nicknames for Biden, asking audiences whether they preferred “Crazy Joe,” “Sleepy Joe,” or “One Percent Joe” — a reference, Trump said, to the percentage of primary votes Biden had captured during his failed presidential bids.

“I think he ran three times and he never had more than one percent, so we call him One Percent Joe,” Trump said at a Nevada rally in October 2018. “And then remember what happened? Obama came along and took him off the trash heap and made him vice president. But he never had more than one percent.”

Trump’s mockery of Biden belies a belief that the former vice president is a true a political threat, according to a Republican strategist close to the Trump campaign. “The candidates he doesn’t talk about, it’s a signal that he doesn’t take them seriously,” this person said.

Indeed, while the news media have recently focused on the Democratic 2020 hopeful Pete Buttigieg, Trump has ignored the young South Bend mayor.

“We have had a number of conversations about potential challengers, and Biden has been at the top of the list because of his polling numbers,” said a Republican lawmaker who talks frequently with the president. “He is seen as one of the most difficult potential challengers because of his appeal to independents and his likable style.”

A former White House aide downplayed that notion, saying that while Trump was once almost single-mindedly focused on Biden, his thinking about the 2020 field might have changed given the entry of 19 other contenders into the fold.

But the back-and-forth between Trump and Biden continued on Thursday when Biden announced his candidacy in a video that took direct aim at the president’s character and judgment, denouncing Trump’s initial refusal to condemn white nationalists who rallied in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017 as a “threat to our nation was unlike any I’d ever seen in my lifetime.”

Trump hit back before 9 a.m. with his “Sleepy Joe” retort. He added a warning to Biden that the Democratic primary would “be nasty — you will be dealing with people who truly have some very sick & demented ideas. But if you make it, I will see you at the Starting Gate!”

Inside the Trump campaign, the president’s political team is counting on an increasingly liberal Democratic Party pulling Biden, a lifelong moderate, to the left during what political observers anticipate will be a bruising primary fight.

Biden, who was first elected to the Senate in 1972 at the age of 29, has appeared to acknowledge that drift of the party, telling a crowd in Delaware last month that he has the “most progressive record of anybody” running for the White House.

Tim Murtaugh, communications director for the Trump campaign, said: “It doesn’t matter who comes out of the Democrat convention next year, because whoever it is will be beat up, broke, without a national operation, with a DNC that’s in debt, and saddled with all of the socialist policies they will have adopted in order to win the nomination. Like the rest of them, Biden will have to embrace all of the socialist policies in order to be successful in the leftist field.”

Republican operatives unaligned with the Trump campaign echoed that view.

“The positions that he held in the ’70s, those are all in play. They are an affront to Republicans in 2019, never mind the Democrats, so I just don’t see a lane developing for him,” said Chris LaCivita, a GOP political strategist, citing Biden’s comments and positions from decades ago that are out of step with today’s Democratic Party.

Fresh evidence of that seemed to emerge on Thursday afternoon, when Anita Hill told the New York Times she was not satisfied with an apology Biden offered her privately last month for her 1991 experience testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which Biden chaired at the time, after she accused then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment.

“I cannot be satisfied by simply saying I’m sorry for what happened to you,” Hill told The New York Times. “I will be satisfied when I know there is real change and real accountability and real purpose.”

“Joe Biden is Jeb Bush of this cycle,” said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), comparing Biden to the former Florida governor crushed by Trump in the 2016 GOP primary. “The party has passed him by. He got in too late, I don’t think he can capture the nomination, and his high point is today.”

McCarthy, a close Trump ally, said he had discussed all the Democratic candidates with Trump but didn’t think the president was more worried about Biden than other potential challengers.

“He’s no different than the others” to Trump, McCarthy said.
