Trump bashes news ‘fakers’ as journos gather for D.C. gala

True to form, the president used a Wisconsin rally to go after his favorite target. Meanwhile, an unusually staid White House Correspondents Dinner was underway in D.C.

President Donald Trump was exactly where he wanted to be Saturday night — far away from Washington and the gala of journalists who cover his administration.

As the media prepared to gather for an annual glitzy dinner that once brought together the media, the administration and Hollywood, Trump rallied thousands of supporters in Green Bay, Wis. And he wasted little time going after his favorite target — bashing the news media as “fakers” and calling his press secretary on stage to join him in the flogging.

Story Continued Below

“Fake news. They’re fake,” Trump said during a roughly 90-minute rally. “They are fake. They are fakers.” The crowd broke into a chant: “CNN sucks! CNN sucks”

“You know what sucks?” Trump asked? “Their ratings suck because people don’t believe them.”

Back in D.C., an unusually staid rendition of the White House Correspondents dinner was getting underway. Instead of a comedian, historian Ron Chernow was summoned to regale the crowd, and journalism awards and scholarships were handed out.

Nonetheless, Trump spurned the event again, as he’s done since he was elected. He escalated his disdain for the dinner this year, directing administration officials to join him in boycotting it.

Trump instead spent the evening surrounded by supporters who put him in the White House. Trump was the first Republican to carry Wisconsin in a general election since 1984, but there are signs the state could turn back blue in 2020. Despite Trump’s narrow victory in 2016, Democratic candidates swept the GOP in statewide races last year.

The president also trotted out his press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who endured comedienne Michelle Wolf’s attacks on her at last year’s dinner.

“Last year this night I was at a slightly different event,” Sanders said. “Not quite the best welcome. So this is an amazing honor. I’m so proud to work for the president.”

Earlier this month, Trump told reporters he would “hold a very positive rally instead” of attending the “so boring” and “so negative” dinner. Yet on Saturday, that wasn’t the case, as the president mocked Democratic primary candidates, invoked a deceased Republican senator over his vote on health care legislation, ridiculed a “third-rate actor in Chicago” and referred to top government officials as “scum.”

“Saturday night, is there any place that’s more fun than a Trump rally?” the president asked. “No,” the crowd roared.

Trump called out “Sleepy Joe” Biden, “Crazy Bernie” Sanders and “Pocahontas,” his derisive nickname for Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

“You look at the candidates, right — I think Pocahontas, she’s finished,” Trump said. “She’s out. She’s gone.”

Trump knocked Warren for claiming Native American heritage, joking that “it was found that I had more Indian blood in me than she did, and then it was determined that I had none, but I still had more.”

Trump celebrated recent economic data and promoted the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade, which has yet to be ratified by Congress. Though the president framed the deal as a win for manufacturers and farmers, he suggested congressional Democrats may prefer to hand him a loss than do something good for the country.

He sought to rename the Democratic Party — first to the “Democrat Party” before settling on the “Radical Left Democrat Party” — and called Democrats “the party of high taxes, high crime, open borders, late-term abortion, hoaxes and delusions,” while the GOP “is the party for all Americans.”

“You took back your country with that great election two and a half years ago. Now you finally have a president who is loyal to you,” Trump told supporters. “Every day between now and November 2020, we are going to keep on working, we are going to keep on fighting and we are going to keep on winning, winning, winning. We are going to win.”

Saturday’s rally was sandwiched between national news of a deadly shooting in California and the correspondents’ dinner.

One person died and three others were injured in the shooting earlier Saturday at a San Diego-area synagogue. The deadly attack came six months after a shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, where 11 people were killed, and on the final day of the Jewish holiday Passover.

Trump acknowledged the shooting in his remarks, saying the nation’s heart is with the victims and praising law enforcement and the off-duty Border Patrol agent who fired at the suspect.

“Our entire nation mourns the loss of life, prays for the wounded and stands in solidarity with the Jewish community.” Trump said. “We forcefully condemn the evil of anti-Semitism and hate, which must be defeated.”

Meanwhile, at the dinner, journalists in Washington were celebrating the First Amendment and awarding scholarships to students.

“I don’t wanna dwell on the president,” said Olivier Knox, SiriusXM’s chief Washington correspondent and president of the White House Correspondents Association. “It is not his dinner. It is ours, and it should stay ours.”

California synagogue shooting leaves one dead, three wounded

A gunman walked into a southern California synagogue crowded with Sabbath worshippers on Saturday and opened fire with an assault-style rifle, killing one woman inside and wounding three others in a hate crime carried out on the last day of Passover, authorities said.

The suspect, a 19-year-old white male whose identity was not immediately made public, fled the scene by car and was arrested a short time later when he pulled over and surrendered to police, authorities said at a news conference.

President Donald Trump and other elected officials decried what they called an anti-Semitic attack exactly six months since 11 people were killed at a Pittsburgh synagogue in the deadliest assault on Jews in US history.

Saturday’s shooting took place at the Congregation Chabad synagogue in the town of Poway, California, about 23 miles (37 km) north of downtown San Diego.

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore told reporters that four people were struck by gunfire and taken to Palomar Medical Center, where one of the victims, an “older woman”, died. The three other patients – “two adult males” and a “female juvenile” – were listed in stable condition, Gore said. The identities of the victims were not given.

Hate crime

Poway Mayor Steve Vaus, speaking from a police command centre, characterised Saturday’s shooting as a “hate crime“, saying his assessment was based on statements uttered by the gunman when he entered the synagogue.

Nothing else was disclosed about a possible motive. But Gore said investigators were reviewing the suspect’s social media posts and “his open letter”, suggesting the gunman may have left some kind of written manifesto.

Speaking with reporters at the White House, Trump said, “My deepest sympathies go to the people that were affected.” He added that “it looks like a hate crime” and that authorities will “get to the bottom of it”.

The attack occurred shortly before 11:30am local time (18:30GMT) in Poway, a suburb of about 50,000 residents, when the suspect walked into the synagogue and started shooting, Gore said. As he was making his getaway, an off-duty US Border Patrol agent opened fire on the suspect, striking the vehicle but apparently missing the suspect, according to Gore.

The gunman was arrested a short time later when he peacefully surrendered to police.

A San Diego officer was en route to the shooting scene when he overheard a California Highway Patrol (CHP) radio dispatch “of a suspect who had called into CHP to report that he was just involved in this shooting and his location”, San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit recounted.

“The officer was actually on the freeway and he clearly saw the suspect in his vehicle. The suspect pulled over and jumped out of his car with his hands up and was immediately taken into custody,” Nisleit said.

He said the assault-style rifle believed to be the murder weapon was found on the front passenger seat of the car.

‘You can’t break us’

Local television channel KGTV 10News said the synagogue was hosting a holiday celebration beginning at 11 am local time and due to culminate in a final Passover meal at 7pm . Authorities said about 100 people were inside the temple, where Saturday services marking the Jewish Sabbath would have been under way or have just concluded.

San Diego television station KGTV reported a woman whose husband was still inside the synagogue as saying the rabbi was among those shot.

Minoo Anvari, an Iranian refugee who said her husband was attending services inside when gunshots rang out, told KUSI-TV the wounded included a female friend and the rabbi, who was shot in the hand. “We are united. You can’t break us.,” Anvari told KUSI.

Cantor Caitlin Bromberg of Ner Tamid Synagogue, down the street from the shooting scene, said her congregation learned of the shooting at the end of their Passover services and that they were heading to Chabad of Poway to show support and help.

“We are horrified and upset, and we want them to know we are thinking of them,” Bromberg told The Los Angeles Times, adding that she has not heard from Chabad of Poway leadership because they would not normally use the phone during the Sabbath.

“They would only do that on emergency basis, if they do it at all,” Bromberg told the newspaper.

Evander Holyfield’s Son Elijah Reportedly Signs with Panthers as UDFA

Georgia running back Elijah Holyfield (13) warms up before the first half of the Southeastern Conference championship NCAA college football game between Georgia and Alabama, Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018, in Atlanta. (AP Photo/John Amis)

John Amis/Associated Press

Georgia Bulldogs running back Elijah Holyfield has reportedly found a home in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers.

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Panthers will sign Holyfield after he went undrafted.

Holyfield, the son of legendary boxer Evander Holyfield, had an excellent junior season for Georgia, rushing 159 times for 1,018 yards (6.4 YPC) and seven touchdowns. He paired with D’Andre Swift (1,049 rushing yards, 10 touchdowns) to give the Bulldogs a scary one-two combination in the backfield.

That put Holyfield on the map for NFL teams after he largely served as a backup for Nick Chubb and Sony Michel in his first two years, making him an intriguing prospect at this year’s draft. And Holyfield took advantage of having two future NFL players ahead of him on the depth chart early in his Georgia career.

“I learned how to practice, how to go through the offseason and how to get better,” he said in early February, per Andrew DiCecco of Eagles Wire. “They never peaked out—they always continued to get better every week.”

“It was a very humbling experience,” he added. “I think it taught me to keep working, no matter what. I knew my time would come eventually. I definitely think it’s helped me become a better football player, learning different things that I wouldn’t have learned had I went somewhere else.”

After two years of waiting, however, Holyfield took advantage of his time to shine, and after a solid junior season, he decided to turn pro.

Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller and Josh Norris of Rotoworld broke down what Holyfield brings to the table at the NFL level:

Matt Miller @nfldraftscout

Has enough speed to be an off-tackle runner. Not a ton of shake to his game but runs with power and acceleration. Showed vs. Alabama & Texas he can push the pile against tough run Ds. Picks his spots. Almost never loses yards.

Josh Norris @JoshNorris

Elijah Holyfield’s style perfectly matches his frame. Power on contact + leg drive = taking a 1v1 LB for a ride https://t.co/I3eDLv576h

And having a former heavyweight champion as a father taught the younger Holyfield a thing or two about work ethic, too:

Georgia Bulldogs @UGAAthletics

If there’s one thing that Elijah Holyfield’s dad taught him, it’s to work harder than everyone else. https://t.co/s2HL7QhI3v

Carolina will be banking on that work ethic, combined with his athletic abilities and the production he showcased in 2018, leading to a long and successful career in the NFL.

Holyfield doesn’t move the needle like some of the higher-profile running backs taken, but he’s a solid player who has shown steady improvement and could make an impact at the next level.

There’s little question he’ll work hard in an effort to do just that.

It will be an uphill climb for Holyfield to make the Panthers’ 53-man roster out of training camp. Running back is one position they have solid depth, led by Christian McCaffrey. They also drafted Jordan Scarlett out of Florida in the fifth round.

The upside for Holyfield is he will go into camp with a team and an opportunity to make an impression. Even if he can’t break through with the Panthers, other clubs will be keeping an eye on his performance to see how his skill set might be able to help them heading into the 2019 season.

Warriors Rumors: Klay Thompson Dealing with ‘Pretty Bad’ Sprained Ankle Injury

LOS ANGELES, CA - APRIL 26: Klay Thompson #11 of the Golden State Warriors looks on before Game Six of Round One against the LA Clippers during the 2019 NBA Playoffs on April 26, 2019 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California. Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson is battling an ankle injury that could jeopardize his availability for Game 1 of the team’s second-round series against the Houston Rockets, according to The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson II.

Thompson reported Thompson sprained his ankle in the third quarter of the Warriors’ 129-110 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday. The ankle “was still pretty bad” on Saturday morning.

Immediately after Game 6, Thompson was optimistic about suiting up against the Rockets on Sunday, per 95.7 The Game:

95.7 The Game @957thegame

Klay Thompson on his ankle, “it’s sore but I anticipate going fully on Sunday.” #Warriors https://t.co/XJEYWk40Jw

Compounding matters, Stephen Curry rolled his right ankle as well Friday. According to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater, Curry was visibly limping during his postgame press conference but indicated he expects to play in Game 1.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said Saturday both Thompson and Curry are considered questionable for the time being, per NBC Sports Bay Area’s Logan Murdock:

Logan Murdock @loganmmurdock

Steve Kerr said both Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are questionable for Game 1.

When asked about @ThompsonScribe’s report that Klay’s ankle was ‘pretty bad’ Kerr joked that reporters have better sources than he does. https://t.co/ABDTgihtUD

The Clippers gave Golden State a far tougher fight than anybody expected, which is worrying for the Warriors when the level of competition increases—such as it will in the second round.

Most concerning is Golden State’s 111.5 defensive rating in the opening round, per NBA.com. Thompson specifically will be tasked mostly with guarding James Harden or Chris Paul, so his health will be a key factor for the Warriors defense.

Nobody can touch the Warriors at full strength. Even when they’re not at their best, they possess a singular talent in Kevin Durant who can paper over whatever cracks they might have. Durant finished with 50 points in Friday’s victory.

Take one of Golden State’s key players out of the equation and the team becomes more vulnerable. The degree to which Thompson and Curry are hurt will be a dominant storyline in the second round.

Is apartheid in South Africa over?

It was in 1994 that 46 years of apartheid came to an end and South Africans voted for a new future with a new president Nelson Mandela.

During his five years in power, Mandela boosted spending on health and education, trying to bridge the huge gap between black and white communities.

But today his African National Congress (ANC) party is accused of not doing enough.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the day apartheid ended is one that won’t be forgotten.

But how different is the country a quarter of a century on? How much is the racial divide still an issue in the rainbow nation?

Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Trysten Hill agreed to an informal “work ethic contract” with Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli before the franchise selected him out of UCF in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft Friday night.

Marinelli told reporters it’s a pact with all the team’s defensive linemen and is not at all related to outsider concerns about his “football character and maturity.”

“I do this with every guy from a free agent to a draft pick, just my own copy of it, back and forth, front and back. It talks about how we play, what I ask of you in practice, day of games, all of it. I am very clear of it. I said to him, ‘If it doesn’t fit you, tell me now, because you will not be happy here. I told him to keep it, and he said, ‘Coach I feel great about this.’

“It’s just about how you play. It’s a lot of different things, but how you carry yourself, how you play in our system. The effort and the want to, every snap. We’re unique that way—how hard we practice and play. I usually see that on film early with guys. He really plays hard. If you watch his tape, he really hustles. That’s the passion we want in these guys.”

Yahoo Sports’ Eric Edholm clarified that it was a “handshake deal.”

Hill tallied 36 total tackles, including 10.5 tackles for loss, and three sacks across 12 appearances for the Knights during his junior season in 2018.

But he started only one game, raising questions about why one of UCF’s most talented defenders wasn’t on the field consistently.

In December, Chris Hays of the Orlando Sentinel reported the Florida native “started to gain a reputation, deserving or not, for being lazy and having attitude issues” during his sophomore season in 2017. Then he lost his starting spot when Josh Heupel took over the program from Scott Frost before the 2018 season.

“And then having things happen … and having the coaching change happen and how some people started to spell it out in different ways about me in different situations and stuff like that,” Hill said. “But I don’t feel like I got a bad rap. I just feel like some people didn’t really support me the way they should have.”

He mentioned Frost and his staff while declaring for the draft in early January, but he didn’t mention Heupel or his staff, furthering the belief a schism had developed.

Looking ahead, Hill should provide depth for the Cowboys behind Maliek Collins and Tyrone Crawford at defensive tackle as a rookie.

He possesses the potential to eventually become a three-down starter for Dallas up front. That could happen as early as 2020 with Collins being a potential unrestricted free agent after next season.
