Suns HC Rumors: Monty Williams ‘Gaining Real Momentum’ to Be New Coach

FILE - In this Jan. 19, 2016 file photo, then-Oklahoma City Thunder assistant coach Monty Williams is seen in the second half of an NBA basketball game in Denver. Without his wife, it's a bittersweet Olympics for Williams. When Ingrid Williams died on Feb. 11 at age 44, it meant he would experience Rio alone.

David Zalubowski/Associated Press

The Phoenix Suns may be closing in on their next head coach.

On Wednesday, Marc Stein of the New York Times reported the possibility of Phoenix hiring Monty Williams to fill the role is “gaining real momentum.”

Stein noted the job is his “if he wants it” but pointed out the fact Williams could have multiple opportunities means he “has the rare ability to be choosy about where he wants to coach next.”

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported in April the Suns were “planning to target” Williams, who is currently an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers, after they fired head coach Igor Kokoskov. However, he also noted the Los Angeles Lakers were planning to interview him a second time, as well.

Williams was a player before he was a coach, entering the league out of Notre Dame as a first-round draft pick of the New York Knicks in 1994. He played nine seasons for the Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic and 76ers.

He was then an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers before he became the head coach of the New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans prior to the 2010-11 season. He spent five seasons in New Orleans and accumulated a 173-221 record with two playoff appearances, although he lost in the first round both times.

Williams has been the associate head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder and an assistant with Philadelphia since.

As for Phoenix, it finished with the worst record in the Western Conference (19-63) this past season. Organizational stability is also a question mark following the decision to fire Kokoskov after just one season.

Still, promising pieces are in place with Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton and a 2019 draft pick that has a 14 percent chance of landing at No. 1 overall and turning into Duke’s Zion Williamson.

Williams will have to weigh that as he decides on a job apparently there for the taking.

Damian Lillard, Trail Blazers Even Series, Win Game 2 vs. Nikola Jokic, Nuggets

DENVER, CO - MAY 1: Damian Lillard #0 of the Portland Trail Blazers drives to the basket against the Denver Nuggets during Game Two of the Western Conference Semifinals of the 2019 NBA Playoffs on May 1, 2019 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. The Portland Trail Blazers stole home-court advantage from the Denver Nuggets in their second-round playoff series with a 97-90 victory in Game 2 at the Pepsi Center.

Portland tied the series at a game apiece and now has a chance to seize control with the next two at home, where it hasn’t lost this postseason.

CJ McCollum led the way with 20 points, six assists and six rebounds, but the visitors used a balanced attack throughout. Six players finished in double figures, including Damian Lillard (14 points on just 5-of-17 shooting from the field and 1-of-7 shooting from deep), Enes Kanter (15 points and nine boards) and Al-Farouq Aminu (11 points and 10 rebounds).

The Nuggets received double-doubles from Nikola Jokic (16 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists) and Paul Millsap (14 points and 11 boards) while grabbing 23 offensive rebounds, but it still wasn’t enough to go up 2-0 in the series.

The Trail Blazers aren’t supposed to win playoff road games without Lillard and McCollum putting the team on their backs.

With Jusuf Nurkic sidelined, they are the only Portland players who averaged more than 13.1 points a night during the regular season. They also have the ball in their hands on almost every possession, meaning they are in full control of the pace and where the team is generating its shots.

Lillard in particular has been the biggest story of the playoffs due to his showdown with Russell Westbrook and buzzer-beater three that sent the Oklahoma City Thunder home.

And yet, Portland was up by 15 at the half against Denver in Game 2, even though Lillard had six points on 2-of-8 shooting and McCollum had five on 2-of-9 shooting. Logic dictates that would have been a disastrous formula for the visitors, but the rest of the roster turned in a much better effort than the Game 1 loss.

Hardwood Paroxysm @HPbasketball

I think Portland genuinely played well that half as a team. They were aggressive, got to the rim, attacked Murray for easy buckets, Kanter did Kanter things. They played well and shot poorly. Denver played poorly and shot worse.

Kanter made up for defensive concerns by establishing himself as a force on the blocks and glass. He made Jokic work on the defensive side and then exploited the matchup with Mason Plumlee when Jokic was in foul trouble.

Hardwood Paroxysm @HPbasketball

The ball just is magnetized to Kanter. Been a bunch in this series, and I feel like his career, where it’s a loose ball and it just winds up in his hand and he just reaches up and slips the ball in the basket.

Elsewhere, Zach Collins found success on the blocks, Rodney Hood (15 points) darted into openings created by the attention Lillard drew, and Aminu sought opportunities in transition. Had Maurice Harkless not limped to the locker room after twisting his ankle in the first half, the entire starting lineup would have been in double figures.

The frontcourt also wasn’t the insurmountable problem it was in the first game because the doubles were faster to Jokic and Aminu held his own against Millsap, even tying him up for a jump ball during one impressive play.

Hardwood Paroxysm @HPbasketball

They’re sending THE HOUSE at Jokic right now in the post.

Dan Devine @YourManDevine

The Nuggets are running Murray though screens, banging him around as he tries to navigate them, and Harkless is all over him every step of the way on the other end — Murray looks like he’s getting pretty frustrated.

Kanter isn’t strong enough on the defensive side to guard Jokic in one-on-one matchups, but the Trail Blazers swarmed around him and forced others to beat them to make up for the mismatch.

It was just a matter of time before the guards got involved, and Lillard more than doubled his points in the third quarter while McCollum facilitated and unleashed smooth floaters whenever he found space in the lane. McCollum also drilled a critical three-pointer with less than four minutes remaining to push the lead back to double digits and was the best player on the floor for much of the fourth quarter.

Jusuf Nurkić @bosnianbeast27

The scary thing for the Nuggets is the realization that Lillard is surely going to explode in one of these games. He is one of the league’s premier scorers and will likely find his touch from deep going back home.

That Denver lost home-court advantage when McCollum had just 16 points and three assists in Game 1 and Lillard struggled to find his shot in Game 2 means its expiration date is in sight.

Portland’s role players have adjusted to the Nuggets putting so much attention on Lillard, Jamal Murray was limping for much of the second half, and Denver was an ugly 20-21 on the road this season. Combine that with the inevitable head-turning Lillard performance that is surely on its way, and the Western Conference’s No. 2 seed will duck out of the playoffs in the second round.

What’s Next?

The series shifts to Portland for Friday’s Game 3 and Sunday’s Game 4.

HRW: China using mobile app for surveillance of Uighurs

Chinese police are using a mobile app to store data on 13 million ethnic minority Uighurs and other Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang province, a Human Rights Watch (HRW) report has revealed.

The app, known as the Integrated Joint Operations Platform, is being used to store information from the height and weight of individuals to facial recognition scans.

The report, released on Thursday, added that Xinjiang authorities closely watch 36 categories of behaviour, including those who do not socialise with neighbours, often avoid using the front door, don’t use a smartphone, donate to mosques “enthusiastically”, and use an “abnormal” amount of electricity.

“The goal is apparently to identify patterns of, and predict, the everyday life and resistance of its population, and, ultimately, to engineer and control reality,” HRW said in the report.

The rights watchdog worked with German security firm Cure53 to reverse engineer the app in late 2018 to provide “an unprecedented window into how mass surveillance actually works in Xinjiang”.

Along with collecting personal information, the app prompts officials to file reports about people, vehicles and events they find suspect, and sends out “investigative missions” for police to follow up.

Officers are also asked to check whether suspects use any of the 51 internet tools that are deemed suspicious, including messaging platforms popular outside China like WhatsApp, LINE and Telegram.

A number of people said they or their family members have been detained for having WhatsApp or a Virtual Private Network (VPN) installed on their phones during checks by authorities, according to the report.

Uighurs: Nowhere To Call Home

China has led an increasingly repressive campaign in Xinjiang following a series of knife attacks and ethnic riots over the past 10 years.

It has come under international criticism over its policies in the northwest region where as many as one million Uighurs and other mostly Muslim minorities are being held in internment camps, according to a group of experts cited by the UN.

China claims the camps are vocational training centres.

Many are also forced to host government monitors in their own homes and undergo other forms of regular surveillance.

HRW said Beijing has already collected “DNA samples, fingerprints, iris scans and blood types of all residents between the age of 12 and 65” as well as voice samples.

“Psychologically, the more people are sure that their actions are monitored and that they, at anytime, can be judged for moving outside of a safe grey-space, the more likely they are to do everything to avoid coming close to crossing a moving red- line,” Samantha Hoffman, an analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s International Cyber Policy Centre, told AFP news agency.

“There is no rule of law in China, the Party ultimately decides what is legal and illegal behaviour, and it doesn’t have to be written down.”

Clinton: ‘China, if you’re listening, why don’t you get Trump’s tax returns?’

Hillary Clinton

“So why should Russia have all the fun?” Hillary Clinton said. “And since Russia is clearly backing Republicans, why don’t we ask China to back us?” | Spencer Platt/Getty Images

2020 Elections

Turnabout, she hypothetically suggests to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, is fair play.

Hillary Clinton on Wednesday night suggested that if the Justice Department was going to let Russia get away with interfering in the 2016 presidential election, it might be OK if one of the 2020 Democratic candidates enlisted China for help.

The 2016 Democratic presidential candidate offered a seemingly tongue-in-cheek hypothetical to Rachel Maddow on her MSNBC show.

Story Continued Below

“Imagine, Rachel, that you had one of the Democratic nominees for 2020 on your show, and that person said, you know, the only other adversary of ours who is anywhere near as good as the Russians is China,” Clinton told Maddow. “So why should Russia have all the fun? And since Russia is clearly backing Republicans, why don’t we ask China to back us?”

“And not only that, China, if you’re listening, why don’t you get Trump’s tax returns?” Clinton continued. “I’m sure our media would richly reward you.”

Her phrasing echoed a statement by Donald Trump about Hillary Clinton’s emails during the 2016 campaign. “Russia: If you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” he said at a July news conference in Florida. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”

Blasted for inviting a foreign power to interfere in an American election, Trump subsequently claimed he was not serious. However, the Mueller report indicated Russian hackers — clearly paying close attention to the U.S. campaign — did go after Clinton’s emails within hours of Trump’s remarks.

Clinton said the No. 1 thing she learned from reading special counsel Robert Mueller’s partially redacted report was that Russia conducted a “sweeping and systemic interference” in the 2016 election and has not been held accountable. And that she worries there is reason to believe they will do it again.

Clinton also said the most important thing she learned was “that the Russians were successful” in sowing “discord and divisiveness” in the country, and helping Donald Trump.

“Let’s have a great power contest, and let’s get the Chinese in on the side of somebody else,” she added. “Just saying, that shows how absurd the situation we find ourselves in.”

When asked about Attorney General William Barr’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier Wednesday, Clinton said that “calling for his resignation makes perfect sense.”

“I think that the Democrats on the committee did a good job today in exposing that he is the president’s defense lawyer,” Clinton said. “He is not the attorney general of the United States in the way that he has conducted himself.”

Clinton added that House Democrats “have every reason to” find Barr in contempt, but to “not let Barr be the big shiny object that diverts people’s attention from the two major findings of the Mueller report.”

In his testimony, Barr refused to answer whether the White House had ever directed him to initiate specific investigations, including whether Trump had asked former White House counsel Don McGahn to get the Justice Department to investigate Clinton and former FBI director James Comey. Clinton called the potential investigation a “diversion attack.”

“I’m living rent free inside of Donald Trump’s brain. It’s not a very nice place to be, I can tell you that,” she said. “So I don’t know what they’re talking about. I’ve been investigated repeatedly by the other side. And much to their dismay, but to my, you know, satisfaction, it’s been for naught.”

“But this is part of their whole technique to divert attention from what the real story is,” Clinton continued. “The real story is the Russians interfered in our election. And Trump committed obstruction of justice. That’s the real story. That’s what had he don’t want the American people thinking about. “

It really feels like you’re in a Tesla with new Oculus Quest VR headset

With Tesla test drives scaled back, your options to check out a Model 3 or Model S sedan are limited enough that you may need to turn to virtual reality to see the car before you buy it.

Oculus’s new VR headset could become the next best way to check out cars without going to a dealership or car lot — or in Tesla’s case, without buying the car sight unseen.

The Oculus Quest was officially announced this week at Facebook’s F8 conference and when it arrives on May 21 for $399 most of the attention will be on how it performs for gaming apps. For the non-gamers out there, however, the headset can give you a glimpse at what thousands of cars look like. It’s one of the many non-gaming uses for VR that’s getting a boost with the new device.

SEE ALSO: Oculus Quest is a VR gaming revelation, but who is it for?

RelayCars has a vast library of car imagery that lets you take a look at each one from all angles and while sitting in the driver seat. With images of 13,000 vehicles and counting, you can take a peek at the Tesla Model 3, a Mini Cooper, or even a Prius.

During a demo, COO Gina Callari compared the app to a “virtual auto show” where you can hop from car to car, getting a feel for the vehicle without driving it. The library is stocked with luxury vehicles, big trucks, and everyday options like a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry.

You can barely tell this is a simulated version.

You can barely tell this is a simulated version.

Image: relaycars

It’s available for free on Oculus Go, Samsung’s Gear VR, HTC Vive, and other VR platforms (there’s also a mobile and tablet app with 360-degree images available for perusing for the VR-disinclined among us), but with the new Quest, the viewing experience will greatly improve.

Currently you can explore the front seat of a Tesla, or any of the available cars, from a fixed point of view in VR. You can look all over, but you can’t see what the car is like from the back seat or from other positions.

With the Quest the RelayCars VR app will give what’s known as 6DOF, or six degrees of freedom, instead of the usual 3DOF: pitch, roll, and yaw. The additional three are forward/backward, left/right, and up/down.

This means you can move around the space, kneel down, get closer to the steering wheel, check out a decal on the trunk — much like you’d do when walking around a real car. It gets you that much closer to a realistic experience.

So instead of trudging to a litany of different dealerships when looking for a new car, you can browse through various options the same way you shop for everything else: online.

Facebook wants to become more private, but not in the ways that matter most

Mark Zuckerberg talked a lot about privacy at F8, except for the things that matter most.
Mark Zuckerberg talked a lot about privacy at F8, except for the things that matter most.

Image: justin sullivan / Getty Images

By Karissa Bell

“The future is private,” Mark Zuckerberg declared, as he awkward-laughed his way through his annual keynote at Facebook’s F8 conference. For Zuckerberg, the event was his chance to sell the world on his vision to turn Facebook into a a “privacy-focused” social network.

To make that happen he plans to rebuild many of the company’s core services, including:

  • A redesigned Facebook that emphasizes groups and Stories more than News Feed

  • A redesigned Messenger app that also allows you to chat with friends on WhatsApp and Instagram (details on how are still sketchy). It will also have a new social tab for interacting with small groups of friends.

  • A redesigned Instagram camera that makes it easier to use Stories like you might have once used News Feed

All of this redesigning also comes with an increased emphasis on end-to-end encryption and ephemerality. Your conversations will be kept private, and the content you create probably won’t stick around as long (again, exact details are unclear).

SEE ALSO: Everything Facebook announced at F8 2019

To hear Zuckerberg describe it, these changes amount to a monumental shift for the company, whose mission was once “make the world more open and connected.”

“As we build more of our services around this privacy vision, we’re also changing how we run our company,” Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page following his keynote address.

But while Facebook may be rebuilding its apps, it has shown no sign that it’s making any change to its most troubling policies. Namely, the massive amount of data Facebook collects to power its multibillion dollar advertising machine. Because while Facebook may be adapting to a world in which its users would rather share privately anyway, it still has boatloads of data on you and billions of others  (even if you don’t use Facebook). And you can bet that it will continue to use that data to sell ads, even if those ads now appear somewhere else other than News Feed.

In fact, Zuckerberg and other executives have been adamant that they stand firmly behind their business model and that they don’t have much patience for those who criticize it

For more proof, look no further than Facebook’s promised “clear history” tool, that would allow people to limit Facebook’s ability to track them. A year later, the tool, which BuzzFeed News reported was a last-minute addition by Zuck in an effort to gain some positive press, still hasn’t launched, and it didn’t even get a passing mention on the F8 stage this year. (Facebook said earlier this month the tool would likely launch this fall.)

That might be because such a tool, one that could actually enhance users’ privacy, isn’t actually in Facebook’s financial interest.

So, yes, Facebook is changing many core aspects of how we use its service. And some of those changes may even make us feel like our conversations are more private. But when it comes to Facebook’s most valuable asset, your personal data, it’s still very much business as usual.

Polestar 2’s Google car dashboard will soon open to Android app developers

Volvo’s performance brand brought its new all-electric sedan, the Polestar 2, to North America on Wednesday. This marked the first time this side of the world got a peek at the first car to use Google to natively power the infotainment system.

An 11-inch center console screen and a 12.3-inch driver seat screen display an Android Automotive operating system with voice-activated Google Assistant, Google Maps, the Google Play Store, and all its Android Automotive apps.

With the $63,000 car’s arrival in San Francisco, Google opened up app development for the Polestar 2 and other cars planning to use Google for its infotainment system for everything from mapping to sending texts to listening to audio books.

The car with a 275-mile range is expected to arrive in the U.S. later in 2020. Already a few thousand models have been pre-ordered worldwide. While it’s pricier than Tesla’s Model 3 sedan (which has a $35,000 starting price option), it’s clearly a competitor. Also on Wednesday, Consumer Reports rated Tesla’s infotainment system the best available. Now it has to compete with Polestar’s Google interface.

Earlier this week, Fiat Chrysler announced it would be using Google’s connected car system for its cars in the coming years. Google noted that it can customize the interface for different car designs and brands. For Polestar it’s a darker interface with four big tiles that house different apps and functions, like maps, media, messaging, and then a separate bottom section with climate settings.

Polestar executives said Google was put directly into the car after seeing most drivers immediately plug in their phones to use the apps and services they know and rely on their devices instead of using car companies’ attempt to build a user-friendly interface. Polestar is looking to offer those apps, like Google Maps or Waze, right in the car.

To start developers can make media apps, like podcasts and music apps, optimized for the car. That means a more stringent process that takes into account that the user is a driver and in a moving vehicle, so safety and distraction levels are key. App development will open next week at Google’s I/O developer conference.

SEE ALSO: Volvo Polestar 2 is the first car to include Google’s native dashboard

For example, Spotify is available as a Polestar music app, but it’s been rebuilt by Google for the car. The Polestar version includes larger buttons and voice controls, for one, and looks different from the Spotify app on your smartphone, while still distinctly Spotify.

At the debut, Google executives said more app development is coming for things like navigation and messaging and other communication apps. But for now cars like Polestar 2 will come with your Google classics like Maps and Assistant and plenty of apps to keep you entertained in the car.

Girl trains pet bird to attack whoever she wants and isn’t afraid to use her powers

By Morgan Sung

The headline says it all, folks.

Twitter user @Apex_sH posted a video of his niece’s stunning powers on Tuesday. The girl has the absolutely incredible ability to sic her pet bird on whoever she screams at.

In the video, she stands on a bed while her bird perches on the bed frame. Then, she turns to face the camera and lets out an unholy shriek. Without any hesitation, her bird launches itself at the poor soul recording the video.

Here’s a screenshot of that unbridled rage.
