Android Auto’s new look is darker, packs more onto car screen

When you sync your Android smartphone to your car’s infotainment system in a few months, expect a darker look.

Android Auto, the in-car display connected to your smartphone, is getting a makeover this summer. Android Auto works in more than 500 car models across 50 different brands, like Toyota, which finally added Android Auto compatibility earlier this year. For iPhone users, CarPlay is Apple’s version for in-car infotainment features.

The new interface is pretty similar to what you’ve seen for the past few years on your car dash, but a new navigation bar on the bottom includes directions, other apps, and quick access to your phone. Now you can be in Google Maps and control your Spotify playlist on the same screen or even take a call from the nav bar.

The navigation bar puts more on the same screen.

A new notification center shows recent calls, messages and other notifications. When you first get into the car Android Auto will automatically connect and continue playing whatever song, podcast, or audio book you were listening to you on your phone.

For cars with bigger screens, Android Auto will take advantage of the extra space and include more directions, music controls, and more.

It’s also darker — you’ll notice fewer flashes of white and darkened backgrounds — and supposedly easier-to-read fonts, which sounds helpful since you’re driving.

Compare for yourself and notice the darker themes throughout the interface, like during navigation:

The new look will be overviewed with developers at Google’s I/O conference later this week.

With Polestar’s new electric car bringing in a native Google dashboard, Google Assistant in plug-in devices, and now more Android Auto features on one screen, there’s a lot of Google in cars.

Warriors Rumors: Golden State Told to Prioritize Klay Thompson over Kevin Durant

Golden State Warriors' Klay Thompson reacts after making a 3-point basket against the Houston Rockets during the second half in Game 2 of a second-round NBA basketball playoff series in Oakland, Calif., Tuesday, April 30, 2019. (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu)

Jeff Chiu/Associated Press

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said on Monday’s episode of First Take that “some of the elite in the game” have told the Golden State Warriors to prioritize Klay Thompson over Kevin Durant in free agency:

We all know that KD is All-World, but Golden State is not really prioritizing him: A, because KD’s his own man, he’s going to make whatever decision he’s going to make. And they believe whether he elects to stay or go, what else can they do for him? They’ve got a first-class organization. They’re moving into a state-of-the-art new facility.

They know that he commands the max, so they’d give it to him, etc. He’s going to make the decision. But I also have been told that they have been advised, strongly I might add, by some of the elite in the game, Hall of Famers as executives and players: Prioritize Klay Thompson. In other words, offer Klay Thompson every penny that you can. If you short-change him in any way in free agency, he will consider departing. Probably for the Clippers more so than anybody else.

We need to keep our eyes on that, even though I’m told by Golden State there’s no way in hell they’re going to do that. They’re going to keep the Splash Brothers together.

The logic here is sound. Durant is the wild card of free agency. He could continue to rack up championships with Golden State or carve his own path reviving the New York Knicks, and Durant is going to make that decision regardless of what the Warriors say in a pitch meeting.

Thompson, meanwhile, is the far surer thing. It’s expected he would re-sign with the Warriors if they presented him with a maximum contract, something they should leap to do July 1.

“If they come with a five-year, $190 million max deal for Klay Thompson, that’s done on July 1—he’s going into the new building with Steph Curry,” ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said Monday on Get Up! “If they try to do anything less than that, you can expect Klay Thompson to be out in free agency. Watch not for the Lakers then, but the Clippers.”

The overwhelming likelihood is that Thompson will remain a Warrior. He wants to be there; the Warriors want him there. The only thing that could prevent him from signing a long-term contract is money, which comes down to an issue of respect for players.

Dwyane Wade left the Miami Heat in 2016 because he felt disrespected by their monetary offer, not because he wanted to depart the organization. Thompson is in a position where he and Curry could go down as the most decorated backcourt in league history; they’re already the greatest shooting duo the game has ever seen.

The Warriors ownership group has billions of dollars and will open the Chase Center next season, a state-of-the-art arena that will bring a new revenue stream to the organization.

Golden State’s priority will be retaining both Durant and Thompson. But the first priority should be inking the $190 million deal Thompson is due to avoid a disaster where the team loses both.

Turkey’s election board orders rerun of Istanbul mayoral vote

Turkey’s top election board announced on Monday that the vote for the mayor of Istanbul, the country’s largest city and economic hub, will be re-done.

The new vote will be held on June 23.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Justice and Development (AK) Party had lodged an “extraordinary objection” and asked for a rerun of the election after several partial appeals it made for a recount did not result in any action.

Erdogan’s party alleged voting irregularities made the results invalid.

Election board members accepted the AK Party’s objection to the election results on Monday with seven votes in favour and four votes against, state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

Ekrem Imamoglu of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) was declared the mayor of the metropolis on April 17, pending the AK Party’s latest objection.

The race ended in an extremely close result, according to the final tally announced by the provincial election board.

Imamoglu secured the mayoral seat with 4,169,765 votes, while the AK Party’s Binali Yildrim received 4,156,036 votes – a difference of 13,729 votes.

The Turkish lira weakened after the AKP’s representative on the election board, Recep Ozel, tweeted the decision that has kept Turks and investors in suspense since the March 31 elections.

The CHP said on Monday it was a “plain dictatorship” that decided on a re-run of local elections in Istanbul.

“It is illegal to win against the AK Party,” CHP party Deputy Chairman Onursal Adiguzel said on Twitter. “This system that overrules the will of the people and disregards the law is neither democratic, nor legitimate.”

The opposition has in the past questioned the independence of the electoral body, and members held an emergency meeting on Monday night, private NTV television reported.

Millions of Turkish voters cast their votes nationwide on March 31 in local elections to choose mayors, city council members, and other officials for the next five years.

The elections were a major setback for Erdogan. His party lost city hall in the capital, Ankara, as well as Istanbul, ending a 25-year run in control of both cities by the AK Party.

Cohen: ‘There still remains much to be told’ in Trump saga

poster=”http://bit.ly/2DTOgtA;

true

Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen said Monday that “there still remains much to be told” about the president, as his feud with his ex-boss continues.

Cohen — who has said the president directed him to lie about hush-money payments and that Trump artificially inflated and deflated his assets to suit his own purposes — did not elaborate. He heads to federal prison in Otisville, N.Y., Monday to begin a three-year sentence for a series of tax fraud and lying charges.

Story Continued Below

“I hope that when I rejoin my family and friends that the country will be in a place without xenophobia, injustice and lies at the helm of our country,” he said. “There still remains much to be told. And I look forward to the day that I can share the truth.”

In addition to the prison time, Cohen will have to forfeit $500,000 in assets and pay $1.4 million in restitution to the IRS. Cohen told the House Oversight Committee in February that Trump directed him to lie about the president’s knowledge of hush-money payments to women who say they had affairs with Trump. He also said Trump knew Democratic emails would be dumped during the 2016 campaign and about a meeting with a Russian lawyer offering dirt on Hillary Clinton.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but these memes are good

By Nicole Gallucci

When a meme that’s both funny and genuinely helpful comes along, you don’t let it go.

Twitter users know this, which is why the “I don’t know who needs to hear this” meme is still going strong even though it’s been used on the platform since as early as 2013.

To take part in the meme that keeps on giving, simply begin your tweet with the words “I don’t know who needs to hear this but” and then drop a nugget or two of advice, like so.

A new Firefox update should have the browser working again after a rough weekend

Firefox had an off weekend, but it's trying to get back in working order.
Firefox had an off weekend, but it’s trying to get back in working order.

By Alex Perry

After a difficult weekend in which browser extensions stopped working in Firefox, the popular browser is trying to get itself together so people don’t have to suffer during the work week.

An update came early Monday morning that should theoretically fix the issue, which, according to the Firefox bug report site, was caused by an expired certificate. (Just like in Google Chrome, plenty of Firefox users rely on optional extensions to make their web surfing experiences more tolerable.)

SEE ALSO: How to fix Gmail’s cluttered design with a simple Chrome extension

In a post on the Mozilla blog, the browser maker said version 66.0.4 should resolve the issue.

The seemingly small infrastructural problem meant that people who relied on things like ad blockers to browse the web were forced to use Firefox without them (or switch to another browser entirely). This, of course, led to complaints on social media.

“We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to people who use Firefox,” the blog post read.

One thing to note is that this update only applies to version 66, the current build of the Firefox browser. Some people choose to use older iterations due to personal preference, but it seems those people will be left behind by this update. They may need to update to the current version or start using another browser.

This isn’t the first time in 2019 that internal changes to a popular service have left some people in the dust. Google made API changes earlier this year that killed off a great deal of support for the productivity-focused app IFTTT within Gmail. Thanks to those changes, some people who had set up Gmail commands to make their lives easier suddenly had to find alternatives.

Firefox’s issues this weekend happened on a much larger scale, but at least Firefox was able to issue some kind of fix by the start of the week.

Trump takes dig at Dems on disaster aid

Donald Trump

Puerto Rico, whose leaders President Donald Trump has called “grossly incompetent,” remains at the core of the congressional debate over passing a disaster aid package. | Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

President Donald Trump on Monday attacked Democrats for holding up a disaster aid deal, and reupped his claims that Puerto Rico is receiving too much federal assistance.

“Puerto Rico has been given more money by Congress for Hurricane Disaster Relief, 91 Billion Dollars, than any State in the history of the U.S,” Trump said in a tweet, in which he also claimed Democratic lawmakers are withholding aid from other states recovering from hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfire and flooding.

Story Continued Below

“The Dems don’t want farmers to get any help,” he added. “Puerto Rico should be very happy and the Dems should stop blocking much needed Disaster Relief!”

Top senators negotiating the deal said last week they are nearing an agreement after Republicans laid out a proposal behind closed doors that would increase Puerto Rico’s access to federal recovery cash. Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.), one of the Trump’s congressional allies, said last week the president was “on board” with the GOP’s offer.

Lawmakers have been fighting to unlock more than $17 billion in assistance for months, with aid to Puerto Rico at the core of the debate. The U.S. territory was hit by two hurricanes in 2017.

Negotiations last month collapsed when Democrats pushed for more aid for the island territory against Republican protests. Trump since December has accused Puerto Rico’s leaders of mismanaging federal funds, in a series of tweets calling them “grossly incompetent” politicians who “spend money foolishly or corruptly.”

Senators last week said all parties are feeling a heightened sense of urgency to get aid out to communities. But that will hinge on their ability to reach an agreement with each other and Trump.

Trump accused Democrats of “saying NO Relief” to Alabama, Iowa, Nebraska, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and other states seeking disaster aid.

The president’s tweet Monday came a day after Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters he would skip the winning team’s visit to the White House this week because of Trump’s handling of hurricane recovery efforts in Puerto Rico, where Cora is from.

Trump on Monday said Florida and Texas received $12 billion and $39 billion, respectively, for “their monster hurricanes.” The president has previously claimed Texas received $29 billion in federal assistance in the wake of 2017’s Hurricane Harvey.

The Washington Post reported that a White House official said the president’s figure for Puerto Rico — $91 billion — includes an Office of Management and Budget estimate of future recovery costs. Nearly $41 billion in funding has been announced, according to the report.

It’s Time For Daenerys Targaryen To Burn It All Down On Game Of Thrones

HBO

By Valerie Tejeda

Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 4 (“The Last of the Starks”).

If you thought we were going to get a break after the heart-pounding, terror-filled battle that was “The Long Night,” think again. Instead, the fourth episode of Game of Thrones Season 8 took two more beloved characters from us (R.I.P. Missandei and Rhaegal), and reminded us how truly evil Queen Cersei can be. So maybe it’s time the Mother of Dragons embraces her “Mad Queen” alter ego to even the score?

When we first watched Daenerys Targaryen submerge herself into scalding-hot water in the very first episode of Game of Thrones we were immediately intrigued by this silver-haired protagonist. And by the end of Season 1, after that iconic moment Dany emerged unburnt from the smoldering ashes with her newly hatched dragons, she cemented herself as a fan-favorite for the Iron Throne. But she’s been plagued by her lineage since before she was born, and throughout the seasons has had to constantly prove to others — especially her male advisors — she’s not like her father, the “Mad King” Aerys II that came before her. Tyrion Lannister, now the Hand of the queen, and Varys have for the most part “tempered her worst impulses” and worked hard to keep her from following in her father’s footsteps. “The objective here is to remove Cersei without destroying King’s Landing,” Tyrion advises Daenerys in the most recent episode. And Varys later tells her, “Do not become what you have always struggled to defeat.” While Dany has made a few missteps along the way (she burned the Tarlys alive with dragon fire for not bending the knee, for example) she has for the most part shown she doesn’t immediately act in violence. The same, however, cannot be said for Cersei Lannister.

HBO

Cersei is the one true villain on Game of Thrones, a greater threat than even the army of the dead that our heroes once so greatly feared. She’s always one step ahead of everyone (which apparently only Sansa’s aware of) and always has her own best interest in mind, using violence to protect that, at any cost. She’s the queen of manipulation; she plotted the death of her first husband King Robert Baratheon, murdered countless Westerosis when she exploded the Sept of Baelor, lied about sending help to defeat the Night King, and most recently shot down one of Dany’s dragons and beheaded her loyal advisor and dear friend Missandei — whose last words to Daenerys, by the way, were “dracarys” (the High Valyrian word for dragonfire).

HBO

Dany has officially reached her breaking point, and it appears she is about to go all “Mad Queen” on King’s Landing. But is that such a bad thing if it means getting rid of Cersei?

While there is merit to many of Tyrion and Varys’s concerns, Olenna Tyrell gave the Mother of Dragons some sound advice in Season 7 in regards to listening to her male advisers who were trying to tame her: “The Lords of Westeros are sheep. Are you a sheep? No. You’re a dragon. Be a dragon.” But being a “dragon” means embracing a part of herself that she’s been told to lock away.

Dany is not a tyrant, or a monster.  She doesn’t want to become the Mad Queen. She isn’t here to “burn them all” like her father — she’s here for vengeance on Cersei and peace in the realm. She’s claimed she’s wanted the Iron Throne so she can break the wheel, not become another cruel monarch that continues to oppress the innocent. Daenerys said it herself during Sunday night’s episode: “I’m here to free the world from tyrants. That is my destiny and I will serve it, no matter the cost.”

HBO

That cost has real potential to be the death of many innocent people, should Daenerys make it rain dragonfire over King’s Landing. If the Mad Queen is to be let loose, then she’ll at least have to be strategic about it. But Dany has a better head on her shoulders than people give her credit for. Tarlys aside, she doesn’t have a pattern of killing innocent people like Cersei. At this point, it doesn’t appear that there’s another way to defeat Cersei besides a direct attack, but hopefully Daenerys can find a way to “rip her out, root and stem” without harming the human shield of innocents Cersei has placed inside the walls of the Red Keep.

Regardless of how next week’s episode goes, we’re getting the feeling that Daenerys may not be around by the end of the series. It seems they are setting her up for her Mad Queen undoing (a self-fulfilling prophecy from her advisors, perhaps?) and with less and less people rallying around her (since most of them are gone at this point), she may not even be able to take the throne if she gets Cersei off it.

Let’s just hope that if the show does kill Daenerys off, they wait until she is has the chance to make some great progress for the Seven Kingdoms. It’s the destiny she was meant to fulfill from the very beginning.
