A black & white Twilight Zone is the kind of gimmick cord-cutters need

Image: Gregg DeGuire / Stringer / Getty images

By Adam Rosenberg

Saturday brought some big news for fans of Jordan Peele’s The Twilight Zone reboot.

The show is going black & white. The full-color version will still be there, but a black & white option will be available to anyone who wants to kick it old school and watch the suspense-horror series in a style that more closely mimics the look and feel of the original series.

It’s important to note something here. The Twilight Zone reboot is a CBS All Access exclusive. It doesn’t air on TV at all. If you want to watch it, you’ve got to subscribe to the network’s Netflix/Hulu-like streaming service, for which you’ll pay a minimum of $7 per month.

Not every show can pull off a black & white gimmick like this, but it certainly makes sense for The Twilight Zone. It couldn’t have been terribly laborious or costly for CBS to deliver this alternate viewing format either. An easy win aimed directly at fans, and fans alone.

Even if this specific gimmick doesn’t make much sense for other shows, the underlying concept is a smart idea. As the number of cord-cutters continues to rise and individual broadcast networks look for new ways to compete with streaming titans like Netflix and Hulu, niche appeal is going to matter just as much as mainstream appeal.

Think about how CBS All Access pinned its launch to Star Trek: Discovery, another fan-centric series. I’m still not convinced keeping shows like that and Twilight Zone off the network airways is doing CBS any long-term favors, but it’s no doubt helped the streaming service.

SEE ALSO: ‘The Twilight Zone’ flawlessly translates the spirit of the original series

That said, over time I think we’re going to see fewer streaming-exclusive shows, not more. It’s costly to produce a whole season of TV, and for the time being services like All Access are more novelty than requirement. Eventually, a majority of viewers will realize they can wait for a season of something to end, pay a few bucks for one month of service, and binge away.

I don’t know CBS’s financials here, but I can’t imagine that’s an ideal scenario for the network.

That’s where gimmicks come in. If you love The Twilight Zone, maybe you’ll want to keep that subscription around a little longer so you can see how the series changes in black & white. Would deleted scenes and alternate endings keep you around? Commentary tracks?

It’s not the kind of stuff that would appeal to every viewer, but that’s the whole point. There’s too much content for any reasonable person to keep up with in 2019, and so choices need to be made. Peppering a service like CBS All Access with fan-pleasing extras could create enough of an edge to convince a steady base of subscribers that they should stick around.

The Twilight Zone going black & white could just be a one-off gimmick, but I’d rather look at it as a trial balloon. As more streaming services compete for your attention, they’re going to look for new and unusual ways to keep you on the hook. That’s what this feels like.

The Portland Trail Blazers are headed to the Western Conference Finals after a Game 7 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

CJ McCollum was the star with 37 points in the 100-96 road win Sunday at Pepsi Center. His clutch shot in the final minute helped seal the win for Portland:

Damian Lillard struggled with his shot but still finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists to help the Trail Blazers reach the third round of the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2000.

Denver appeared to be in control with as much as a 17-point lead in the first half, but Portland stormed back in the third and eventually secured the hard-fought victory.

Meanwhile, the Nuggets’ impressive season comes to an end despite 29 points from Nikola Jokic and 17 from Jamal Murray.

Blazers Need a Consistent Third Option to Get Past Dubs

This has been a dream season for the Trail Blazers with the postseason going extremely well after a couple of disappointing early exits. Unfortunately, the upcoming series can be a difficult one if things don’t go perfectly.

CJ McCollum was the clear star of Game 7, finishing with 37 on 17-of-29 shooting while looking unstoppable at times attacking the basket:

  1. McCollum and the Blazers Snapped Postseason Losing Streak for “Jennifer”

He was the biggest reason the team was even competitive in the first half:

Royce Young @royceyoung

It’s kind of amazing the Blazers are only down nine at half, given how poorly that went. They’re shooting 30.4% , Lillard is 1-9 and everyone not named CJ is 7-34 from the floor.

The guard turned it on even more in the second half with 22 of his total points after halftime, even adding a huge defensive play in the fourth quarter:

Bleacher Report @BleacherReport

CJ AND THE C STANDS FOR CHASEDOWN

(via @NBCSNorthwest)
https://t.co/u6xx15aRzE

After several big games during this series, he showed that he probably deserves more than to be in the shadow of “Dame Time.”

On a night where Damian Lillard couldn’t get anything going while finishing 3-of-17 from the court, McCollum was exactly what Portland needed.

Of course, we know Lillard can carry the team as well when he is on, scoring at least 28 points in eight of 12 games this postseason. This included his 50-point effort in the clinching win over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Lillard and McCollum combine to make one of the top backcourts in the NBA, and a big game from either one is enough to beat most teams in the league.

Unfortunately, it’s not enough to beat the Warriors.

Golden State has an offense that just doesn’t quit, leading the NBA in offensive efficiency this year, per Basketball Reference. Even if Kevin Durant is less than 100 percent, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson have shown that they can still light up the scoreboard and make the team near impossible to defend.

If the Trail Blazers want to keep up, they will need both guards to play well and at least one other player to emerge as a go-to option.

Rodney Hood looked like that player at times this series, but he left Sunday’s game with a hyperextended knee and only had six points in 20 minutes before the injury. While the wing was outstanding in Game 6, he was also nearly absent in the team’s losses.

The same could be said about Enes Kanter, who was a key part of the Game 7 win with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The problem is he had gone three straight games without hitting double figures before this one.

Evan Turner also played well Sunday with 14 points and seven boards, which was once again a change from the rest of the series:

Zach Lowe @ZachLowe_NBA

Evan Turner had three baskets and one made free throw the entire playoffs combined before this game.

It’s clear the Blazers have talent, but whether it’s one of these players or Seth Curry or someone else, they won’t be able to win another series without one of the players providing legitimate production every single night.

What’s Next?

Portland will now take on the defending champion Golden State Warriors, who could be without the injured Kevin Durant for part or all of the series. While the squad will be the underdog in the conference finals, the recent success should provide plenty of hope for an upset in the upcoming series.

Elon Musk tweets a pic of 60 satellites, the first for SpaceX Starlink

Image: Uncredited/AP/REX/Shutterstock

By Adam Rosenberg

The first seeds of SpaceX’s Starlink project will soon be planted.

On Saturday, Elon Musk tweeted out a photo of 60 satellites loaded into the fairing, or nose cone, of his company’s Falcon rocket. The hardware represents a first step toward completing Starlink, an eventual satellite constellation that will beam high-speed internet down to Earth from space.

The fairing is the same one that carried a Tesla Roadster into space in 2018. Musk included a photo of that as well, just to give his followers a better sense of scale. Where the Roadster barely filled up the bottom portion of the fairing’s interior, the satellites look positively crammed in.

This first set of satellites is expected to take to the skies in the coming days, perhaps as early as Wednesday. Musk warned that there might be issues since this is the first proper Starlink mission following an early 2018 launch that sent two demo satellites skyward.

But there are also many more launches to come. Starlink will ultimately depend on a network consisting of thousands of satellites, but even in its earlier form the eventual constellation will require multiple launches before it’s partially operational.

Much will likely go wrong on 1st mission. Also, 6 more launches of 60 sats needed for minor coverage, 12 for moderate.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 12, 2019

The dream of high-speed internet delivered from space may be realized by Starlink, but it’s going to take a lot of work. SpaceX plans — and has received Federal Trade Commission approval — to send almost 12,000 satellites into low orbit where they’ll split into three orbital shell-encased clusters arrayed around Earth.

SEE ALSO: SpaceX just blasted a critical NASA instrument into space

While the long-term project shows great promise, it’s also not without risks. Sending that much hardware into orbit — each fuel-carrying satellite weighs around 900 pounds — adds to an already risky accumulation of space junk in the immediate vicinity of Earth.

Houston Astros star Alex Bregman gave his mom a Mother’s Day to remember.

Bregman hit a pair of home runs Sunday against the Texas Rangers. He went deep with a two-run homer in the second inning to put the Astros ahead 4-0 and followed up with a three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 10-1 game.

Bregman recounted in May 2017 how his mother, Jackie, played a big role early in his baseball career.

She drove me to every single practice, flew me to … you name it … Minnesota, Iowa, wherever we were playing a tournament, she was there,” he told reporters. “She was always very supportive throughout the whole process.”

A season after reaching the All-Star Game and finishing fifth in the American League MVP voting, Bregman is once again tearing the cover off the ball. He entered Sunday with 10 home runs, 26 RBI and a .914 OPS. His 1.8 WAR is 11th among position players, per FanGraphs.

Houthi withdrawal from Yemen ports going according to plan: UN

The United Nations has said the first full day of the Houthi withdrawal from three of Yemen’s Red Sea ports went “in accordance with established plans”, while an official from the internationally recognized government said there was ‘deception’.

The Houthis began the long-delayed pull out of their forces from the key port of Hodeidah, as well as the two smaller ports of Saleef and Ras Isa, on Saturday as part of a ceasefire deal reached in Sweden in December.

“All three ports were monitored simultaneously by UN teams as the military forces left the ports and the coastguard took over responsibility for security,” former Danish General Michael Lollesgaard, head of the UN’s Redeployment Coordination Committee (RCC), said in a statement on Sunday.

The Houthi move is seen as a key first step towards ending the civil war, which erupted in 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa.

Activities in the following days are expected to focus on “removal of military manifestations and de-mining,” the UN statement said.

Faking the pullout

Yemen’s information minister accused the rebels of faking the pullout.

“What the Houthi militia did is a repeated theatrical play of handing over control of the port to its own forces (in different uniforms),” Moammar al-Eryani tweeted on Sunday.

The ports are used for grain, oil, commerce and aid, with Hodeidah handling 70 percent of the country’s food imports and humanitarian relief.

Security concerns prevented the UN for months from accessing 51,000 tonnes of wheat in silos near Hodeidah that could feed millions in the impoverished country. The team regained access on May 5.

The war in Yemen has been at a stalemate for years, with the Saudi-UAE-led coalition and Yemeni forces unable to dislodge the Iranian-aligned Houthi rebels from the capital, Sanaa, and other urban centres.

The peace deal agreed in December has been stalled for months.

Houthis began the long-delayed withdrawal from three ports as part of a cease-fire deal reached in Sweden in December. [Abduljabbar Zeyad/Reuters]

“The (Sweden) agreement is very difficult to execute because the lines are blurry and each side interprets it the way it wants to,” Farea al-Muslimi, a visiting fellow at the London-based think-tank Chatham House told the AFP news agency.

“Overall, the next two weeks will show if this is a handover or a yet another hangover,” he said.

Under the plan, the Houthis are to pull back five km from the ports between May 11 and 14. Coalition forces, currently massed four km from Hodeidah port on the edges of the city, are to retreat one km from two flashpoint districts.

Security Council meeting

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, leaders of the coalition backing President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi’s government, have so far not commented on the Houthi ports withdrawal.

UN monitors will verify the Houthi withdrawal on Tuesday.

Saeed Thabet a Yemen political analyst based in Doha said the redeployment appears to be going smoothly because both sides of the conflict are “trying to buy more time” to reposition themselves on new front lines.

“In addition, both sides are eager to show their commitment to work with the UN especially as the UN Security Council is scheduled to meet this week to discuss progress in Yemen,” he told Al Jazeera.

Yemen’s conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, many of them civilians, relief agencies say.

The fighting has triggered what the UN describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with 24.1 million — more than two-thirds of the population — in need of aid.

The Houthi withdrawal represents a”potential breakthrough,” Adam Baron, a Yemen expert at the European Council on Foreign Relations think-tank told AFP.

He said he is not “how significant it can truly be” because of lack of trust between the parties.

“[It] only signals progress on one part of the deal and one aspect of the conflict. It’s key to remember that Yemen is not Hodeidah and even amidst the relative calming there, the conflict continues to burn.”

‘America first’ meets ‘Hungary first,’ but White House wary of lovefest

White House

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Europe’s fiercest anti-immigration leader, visits the White House on Monday — but it’s unclear how friendly his welcome will be.

When Donald Trump became president, Europe’s fiercest anti-immigration leader saw an opportunity to garner international legitimacy for his policies.

But for over two years, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán — the only European Union government head to endorse Trump’s campaign during the 2016 election — failed to get an invitation to visit the White House, despite Trump hosting numerous other European leaders. With no White House visit coming, the Hungarian government lobbied its case to lawmakers, the State Department and the White House. And changes in leadership at the State Department started opening some doors for the Hungarian government.

Finally, on Monday, Trump will host Orbán in the White House, the first time a Hungarian prime minister has visited the White House since 2005.

The visit “clearly raises his profile,” said former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, who has met Orbán and his top aides several times.

“The Obama administration and the State Department completely shut out Orbán. He’s an individual who Trump has tracked very closely,” he added.

But it’s unclear how friendly Orbán’s welcome will be.

While Orbán’s restrictive immigration policies and skepticism about international institutions mirror Trump’s own rhetoric, the Hungarian leader has faced criticism from the European Union, the State Department and civil society groups, which argue that Orbán’s leadership has eroded democratic values. Orbán has been denounced for limiting press freedom, undermining judicial independence, targeting independent non-governmental groups, encouraging racist and anti-Semitic conspiracies, and cracking down on the Central European University, an institution founded by Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros.

“We urge you to raise these issues in your meeting with the Prime Minister,” a bipartisan group of senators, including Senate Foreign Relations Chairman James Risch (R-Idaho), wrote in a letter sent last week to Trump.

And concerns about Chinese and Russian influence in Hungary — a NATO ally and EU member — are also expected to hang over the get-together.

As a result, White House advisers are cautioning Trump against a full embrace of Orbán, despite the president’s own affinity for the leader.

One senior White House official said that while “Hungary is a great ally,” that does not mean Trump is not “troubled” by Hungary’s democratic backsliding.

Still, the official added, Trump is “excited for that meeting. … He loves hosting foreign leaders at the White House.”

Lobbying spree

Hungary has worked hard to win over the Trump administration since the president’s surprise victory.

Former Rep. Connie Mack (R-Fla.), who lobbied for Hungary’s government until last summer, helped to set up a congratulatory phone call between Trump and Orbán in the weeks after the 2016 election. He then spent much of the next 18 months working to set up a White House meeting between the two leaders, he said in an interview.

“It was something I worked on consistently,” he said. “I think we made a lot of strides and put them in this position.”

Publicly, Orbán has heaped praise on Trump.

“We have enthusiastically applauded the president of the United States for thinking precisely as we do when he says ‘America First.’ We say the same: ‘Hungary first, and then everyone else,’” the Hungarian leader declared in a 2017 speech.

In its early days, the Trump administration was split into three camps when it came to Hungary: officials who wanted to stick to America’s existing policy of opposing Orbán’s dismantling of independent institutions, advisers who did not care much about Hungary and some advisers who admired Orbán.

So Mack called, emailed and met with dozens of members of Congress as well as State Department officials, congressional staffers and experts at the Hudson Institute and the Heritage Foundation, according to disclosure filings. He also spoke to Bill Stepien, then the White House political director, and met with Andrea Thompson, who was Vice President Mike Pence’s national security adviser at the time.

Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.), whom Mack lobbied, and 10 other lawmakers sent a letter to former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, urging him to “organize appropriate high-level meetings between the leaders of our two countries in order to build mutual trust, reassure our ally of our support, and harmonize our approaches to our mutual goals.”

Mack made a point of reminding the people he lobbied that Orbán was the European leader most aligned with Trump, he said.

He also circulated four separate memos noting that Orbán was “the first and only European head of state to publicly endorse Donald Trump for President of the United States,” as well as dozens of emails promoting Hungary, including ones touting Orbán’s support for Israel, a key issue for Trump.

In total, Hungary now retains three Washington lobbying firms who are formally registered with the Department of Justice as representing a foreign government: Barnes & Thornburg, Munk Policy and Law and Policy Impact Communications. Hungary’s government has also funded Hungarian organizations in the U.S., some of whom engage with Trump administration circles and conservative think tanks while not registering as foreign agents with the Department of Justice.

William Nixon, the chairman and chief executive of Policy Impact Communications, said Orbán’s White House visit was “the natural next step” after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s meeting with Orbán in Budapest in February.

“I don’t think the importance of this meeting can be overstated,” Nixon said.

“Coming after eight years of being largely ignored by the Obama administration, it is a welcome change,” he added.

Coming around

Bannon said he believes the Trump administration started warming to Orbán because of the confluence of three things: the appointment of David Cornstein, a close Trump friend, as ambassador to Budapest; Pompeo taking the reins at the State Department; and the rising influence of China in Europe.

“Tillerson didn’t make any changes when he was there and State continued to block Orbán,” Bannon said, a pattern that has changed under Pompeo.

And Cornstein, for his part, does not hide his view that the president is a fan of the Hungarian prime minister’s leadership style.

“I can tell you, knowing the president for a good 25 or 30 years, that he would love to have the situation that Viktor Orbán has, but he doesn’t,” Cornstein told The Atlantic in a recent interview.

Ahead of the trip, Orbán framed the visit as a chance to discuss shared views on migration.

“One of the most important issues in our meeting will be how we can cooperate at international forums in the future in the fight against migration,” the Hungarian leader said in a radio interview.

In a call with reporters on Friday, a senior administration official agreed — to an extent.

“I think what we want to focus on with our Hungarian counterparts and with the prime minister, and as we actually have in many of the meetings, is how one tackles some of the broader issues,” the official said.

But the official stressed that most immigration and border management conversations between the U.S. and Hungary are occurring at lower levels. Monday’s meeting is more symbolic.

“The point of this meeting is simply just to reinforce the strategic relationship between allies, NATO allies of U.S. and Hungary — not necessarily just thrash out every issue on the bilateral agenda, which we have been doing constantly for the last two years,” the official said.

Elephants in the room: Beijing and Moscow

For American diplomats, the Washington trip is not necessarily a gesture of goodwill to Orbán.

The meeting is “a routine visit that was bound to happen sometime,” said one State Department official.

It is also a chance to press Hungary over the growing Chinese and Russian influence in Hungary.

“Concern over Russia is genuine,” the official added.

Hungary has perplexed allies by repeatedly vetoing high-level ministerial meetings of the NATO-Ukraine Commission, ostensibly over a Ukrainian language law that negatively impacts Hungarian-speaking communities in Ukraine. “We’ve been very troubled by that,” the senior administration official told reporters on Friday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, is a frequent visitor to Budapest, one of the only places in the EU where he receives a warm welcome.

A State Department spokesperson said the administration is worried “that Russia will continue to expand its malign influence in Hungary.”

The department is also warily eyeing Chinese investment in Hungarian infrastructure. “The experience of states in the Asia-Pacific region shows that Beijing’s handshake sometimes comes with strings, strings that would leave Hungary indebted both economically and politically,” the spokesperson said.

However, “Hungary is a NATO ally,” the spokesperson added. “We do not agree on every issue, but we are committed to strengthening our partnership and achieving results on a wide range of important issues, including security and defense, energy security, trade and investment.”

There is also growing concern among experts about a potential uptick in Russian and Chinese intelligence activity in Hungary.

One former Hungarian government official told POLITICO that the main problem from a security perspective is that Budapest has opened the gates to Russian and Chinese influence to such a large extent that it has neither the ability nor the willingness to “at some level keep under control” the activities of Russian and Chinese state-owned companies in Hungary.

The former Hungarian government official is expecting Western intelligence agencies to become more active in Hungary as a result.

“If we cannot or do not want to fulfill these tasks, then someone else within the alliance will do it for us,” the official said. “But then we can’t sulk about it.”

During Orbán’s visit, American officials are expected to raise concerns about Chinese firm Huawei’s work on developing Hungary’s broadband internet network.

“My sense is this [visit] is not about President Trump loving Orbán,” said Ken Weinstein, president of the conservative Hudson Institute.

“Sure, we’ll have increased defense cooperation with Hungary, but the real subtext is likely China, on Orbán’s relations with the Chinese and trying to get greater cooperation on this issue,” he added.

A spokesperson for the Hungarian government declined to comment on American concerns regarding Hungary’s ties to Russia and China.

“The meeting between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has not taken place yet. We suggest that you get back to us after the meeting,” the spokesperson said.
