Behold the Greatness of Clemson, Alabama’s Lone True Threat to Perfection

Dabo Swinney and Christian Wilkins

Dabo Swinney and Christian WilkinsRichard Shiro/Associated Press

We interrupt your regularly scheduled glorification of Tua Tagovailoa, Nick Saban and all things Alabama football to bring you an important message: The Clemson Tigers are a serious threat to win the College Football Playoff.

That might be a little shocking, considering we’ve spent the past 11 weeks hyping the Crimson Tide as possibly the greatest team ever assembled. Clemson fans must be feeling like Jan Brady, muttering to themselves: “Well all I hear all day long at school is how brilliantly Alabama did this or how wonderfully Alabama did that. Alabama, Alabama, Alabama!”

But chin up, Tigers, because this is all about how great you are.

Saturday’s 27-7 win at Boston College secured Clemson’s spot in the ACC Championship Game, where it will most likely face Pittsburgh on Dec. 1 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Virginia is also a possibility. Either way, the Tigers might be favored by more than three touchdownsas they should be in their remaining regular-season contests against Duke and South Carolina.

Anything can happen, but it’s starting to feel like these next three weeks are a formality before Clemson locks up either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the playoff. Thus, it’s beyond time to start thinking about how much of a contender the Tigers will be in that final quartet.

Austin Bryant, Clelin Ferrell and Dexter Lawrence

Austin Bryant, Clelin Ferrell and Dexter LawrenceMike Comer/Getty Images

First and foremost, Clemson’s defense has been out of this world. This is what everyone had been expecting from the moment Christian Wilkins, Austin Bryant and Clelin Ferrell each returned for one more season. But it wasn’t until early October that this D began to sink its teeth into everything in its path.

Five consecutive opponents have failed to score an offensive touchdown in the first three quarters against Clemson. One could easily argue that’s a more impressive feat than Alabama’s back-to-back shutouts of two of the SEC’s worst passing attacks.

Boston College did score on a fluky first-half punt return, and Louisville took a kickoff to the house after Clemson’s ninth touchdown of that Nov. 3 game. That’s it, though. And even with those two special-teams mishaps, the Tigers led those five opponents by a combined score of 215-22 after three.

We emphasize the first three quarters because things get so out of hand by the fourth that the Tigers typically put in the reserves, let their foot off the gas and allow a meaningless TD. (It happened against NC State, Louisville and Florida State.) But the first-team defense hasn’t allowed a touchdown since September.

In clinching the ACC Atlantic Division on Saturday night, Clemson held Boston College to a mere 61 yards of total offense and six first downs in the first three quarters. The Eagles did eclipse the century mark by the end of the fourth, but they couldn’t crack 2.0 yards per play. Not a darn thing worked for a team that had averaged 37.2 points through its first nine games.

Daren Stoltzfus of ABC News 4 in Charleston, South Carolina, summed up Clemson’s defensive effort quite well on Twitter:

Daren Stoltzfus @DarenStoltzfus

You want an idea of how dominant the #Clemson defense was tonight?

Boston College scored more points (7) and gained more yards (144) on kick and punt returns than they did on offense (0 points, 113 total yards) https://t.co/d2VLMSq9sZ

Once a fringe Heisman Trophy candidate, AJ Dillon managed just a long of nine yards against Clemson’s vaunted front seven.

Signal-caller Anthony Brown got knocked out of the game with a knee injury after just one drive, but does anyone think he would’ve made the difference? Brown hadn’t thrown for 200 yards in any of his previous six games, and struggling quarterbacks don’t suddenly find their rhythm against a defense like this one.

Heck, even quarterbacks who come in red hot get cooled off in a hurry by this defense. Wake Forest’s Sam Hartman threw for four touchdowns the week before he faced the Tigers. Both NC State’s Ryan Finley and Florida State’s Deondre Francois had at least 300 passing yards and two touchdowns on “Clemson Eve.” Yet, that trio combined for four interceptions with nary a TD.

Since the Week 2 game against Texas A&M in which Kellen Mond allegedly exposed major flaws in Clemson’s secondary, the Tigers have allowed just two passing touchdowns in eight contests.

They also lead the nation in yards allowed per carry at 2.08, so, best of luck doing anything against them.

And Clemson’s offense has been almost as unstoppable as its defense is impenetrable.

Trevor Lawrence

Trevor LawrenceChuck Burton/Associated Press

The Tigers never quite caught fire on a frigid night in Boston, but they still flexed their muscles. Immediately after the aforementioned punt return for a BC TD, wunderkind Trevor Lawrence completed all seven of his pass attempts on a statement touchdown drive. He later added the first rushing touchdown of his career, and he finished with 295 passing yards.

Before being taken far out of his geographical and weather-related comfort zoneLawrence said he had never been north of Virginia before this November trip to Massachusetts—he led the Tigers to 204 points scored over their last four games.

Granted, the defenses at Louisville and Wake Forest aren’t exactly good barometers for success against Alabama or Michigan, but it’s not Clemson’s fault that the ACC has offered no resistance lately. The Tigers just continue to dominate behind the combination of the sensational freshman quarterback and the best rushing attack in the land.

Heading into Week 11, Travis Etienne, Tavien Feaster and Co. were leading the nation in yards per carry at 6.94.

It might seem counterintuitive, but Clemson became an even better running team by switching from dual-threat QB Kelly Bryant to more of a pocket passer in Lawrence. The freshman’s ability to stretch the field makes it that much easier for the backs to find holes in the front seven. And with Clemson’s speedsters, giving an inch is as good as giving a mile.

Of course, this is all hot air until the Tigers run into Alabama in the playoff for the fourth consecutive season. Each fanbase can bloviate all it wants about stat-backed dominance and all-time greatness, but they’ll eventually need to settle it on the field.

Just know that Clemson will be up for the challenge.

The 2018 season is no longer a contest to determine who gets the honor of being dismantled by Alabama.

It’s a two-horse race that the Tigers just might win.

Libya rivals, key players to discuss election plan in Italy talks

Palermo, Italy  Libya’s rival factions and key international players will meet in the Italian city of Palermo on Monday amid United Nations-led efforts to re-ignite a stalled political process and set the stage for general elections.

The meeting will come just a few days after Ghassan Salame, the UN special envoy for Libya, presented a new roadmap for a national conference and a vote in early 2019.

The talks will be attended by leaders from the rival Tripoli- and Tobruk-based parliaments, including Fayez al-Serraj, head of the UN-backed government in the capital, and renegade General Khalifa Haftar, who controls the eastern part of the country.

Delegates from FranceRussia, the United States and other regional players will also be in Palermo at the behest of Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

“Libyans are sick and tired of military adventurism and petty political manoeuvres,” Salame told Security Council in New York on Thursday.

“The time has come to give a wider and more representative group of Libyans the opportunity to meet on Libyan soil, with no external interference, in order to devise a clear path out of the present impasse,” he added, referring to the upcoming national conference.

The process, as envisaged by the envoy, should usher in parliamentary and presidential elections more than seven years after a NATO-backed uprising toppled long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi.

Since then, the country has been deeply fragmented along tribal and ethnic lines and caught up in a spiral of violence at the hands of rival militias.

‘Realistic timeframe for elections’

In Palermo, Salame will seek international support for his plan, aware that conflicting agendas within the international community have only exacerbated internal rifts between tribes and militias.

The summit will offer an opportunity to discuss the UN plan in more detail, as well as address other key issues for Libya’s stabilisation, including the creation of a state-controlled police force and the redistribution of oil wealth.

“The meeting in Palermo is considered a ‘service’ conference in support of the UN plan,” said Arturo Varvelli, an analyst at the Institute for the International Political Studies in Milan and a Libya specialist.

“It means the UN retakes control of the stabilisation process in Libya, setting a more realistic timeframe for elections.”

The new UN roadmap shelves a French initiative to hold the ballot on December 10, which drew criticism for its hastiness and for excluding from the process a broader spectrum of Libyan actors.

“The Italians will try to broaden the platform that was absent in Paris,” said Varvelli, referring to talks held in the French capital in May.

“Minority groups, tribal leaders, militias that contributed to fight ISIS [also known as ISIL], should be included in a pacification process,” he added.

Monday’s conference will also prove an opportunity for Conte to retake the lead of the negotiations after the Libyan factions failed to honour the commitments made in the Paris meeting.

The Tobruk-based House of Representatives (HOR), which Salame described as “largely sterile”, failed to produce both an electoral law and a legislation to hold a referendum on a provisional constitution.

Italy and France have been seeking to lead the pacification process in Libya, with both pursuing a different agenda. But they are not the only ones with a stake in the oil-rich country – other regional players are also trying to influence Libyan politics, including Russia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

Italy, Libya’s former colonial power, supports al-Ferraj’s Government of National Accord and has invested heavily on the UN-backed authorities to stem the flow of thousands of undocumented migrants arriving from the Libyan shores.

France, while officially supporting the UN plans, has engaged in a successful campaign over time to legitimise the role of Haftar, head of the self-styled Libyan National Army and an enemy of the Tripoli authorities. Along with Russia, the UAE and Egypt, who consider Haftar a buffer against the advance of Islamist-leaning forces, France has provided him with financial, military and intelligence support.

“France looks at General Haftar as a strong army man, capable of containing the expansion of terrorist groups and maybe securing the southern borders,” said Anne Giudicelli, a former French diplomat and head of consultancy firm Terrorisc.

“France is concerned with the security of the broader Sahel region and its stability. Libya’s open borders have turned the country in a safe haven for terrorist and criminal groups,” she said.

A total collapse of state institutions and public services in the south has left the region and its population prey of criminal gangs and armed groups that have been operating with total impunity.

National conference and new elections

Salame said the upcoming national conference, which is proposed to be held in the first weeks of 2019, will draw on the contributions of thousands of Libyans who participated in 77 preparatory meetings across the country last spring. Their recommendations will set the framework for the electoral process.

However, members of the rival institutions in Tripoli and Tobruk, who stand accused of dragging on the status-quo for their own interests, fear that their grip on power will be lost if new polls take place, according to the UN envoy.

“To both Houses, elections are a threat that must be resisted at all costs,” said Salame, pointing the finger at the two rival parliamentary bodies.

“But to the citizens, elections are means of liberation from the ineffective and increasingly illegitimate authorities.”

According to recent polls, 80 percent of Libyans insist on having elections, said the envoy.

“Palermo will probably offer a more credible timeframe for the elections. However I strongly doubt they will occur even in 2019,” said Jalel Harchaoui, geopolitics lecturer at Versailles University in Paris.

“All the main actors in Palermo have no interest in changing the status quo in Libya. Containment is the main objective, they fear elections may bring more turmoil.”

Serraj and Haftar confrontation

Meanwhile, the security and economic conditions in the country, especially in the Tripoli area, remain dire. Spiralling prices of basic goods and fuel, widespread violence, human rights violations, attacks and pillaging of institutional facilities at the hands of militias have devastated the population.

The deepening of the economic crisis has also exacerbated relations between the Tripoli-based government and the east of the country, from where Haftar has often threatened a major assault on the capital. In July, discontent over the redistribution of the oil wealth caused a standoff over control of the oil terminals in the oil crescent, and a resumption of violent confrontations amongst militias in Tripoli.

A UN-brokered ceasefire and the intervention of the international community imposing a freeze on the sale of oil from the oil crescent helped avoid a rupture between the two regions, eventually prompting al-Serraj to pass a series of economic and security measures to contain the crisis.

Al-Serraj also announced a new security plan for Tripoli, with the aim of regaining control of key installations currently in the hands of militias, including the capital’s port, Mitiga airport and a number of official buildings.

Carmelo Anthony, Rockets Reportedly Discussing Star’s Role, Future with Team

Carmelo Anthony‘s time with the Houston Rockets hasn’t proceeded as planned.

According to ESPN.com’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Anthony and the Rockets “are discussing his role and how they might still be able to proceed together for the rest of the season.” Wojnarowski described the talks as “fluid.”

Anthony, 34, was out Saturday against the San Antonio Spurs because of an illness.

But when he’s been healthy, the results have been disappointing.

Through his first 10 appearances, only two of which have been starts, the 10-time All-Star is averaging 13.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game on 40.5 percent shooting from the field, including 32.8 percent from three.

Additionally, the Rockets have been outscored by nine points per 100 possessions with Anthony on the floor so far this season. Conversely, they have outscored opponents by 1.8 points per 100 possessions when he’s been on the bench.

Anthony’s defensive rating of 111.0 is also the worst among all Rockets players who have logged at least 100 minutes this season.

In the event the two sides can’t find a comfortable middle ground, James Ennis and P.J. Tucker would assume even bigger roles on the wing.

Sinema lead grows again as Arizona Senate vote count continues

Rep. Kyrsten Sinema

Rep. Kyrsten Sinema is the Democratic nominee to fill retiring Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake’s seat. | Matt York/AP Photo

Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema has expanded her lead over GOP Rep. Martha McSally in Arizona after another day of ballot-counting in the state’s Senate race.

Sinema stretched her lead to 28,688 votes on Saturday evening as officials in the two most-populous counties, Maricopa and Pima, counted tens of thousands more absentee ballots, though that margin could shrink slightly if smaller counties where McSally has an edge report new totals later Saturday evening. Sinema now has 49.5 percent of the vote to McSally’s 48.2 percent, with hundreds of thousands more votes still left to count.

Story Continued Below

Sinema and McSally are vying to succeed Republican Sen. Jeff Flake, who announced last year that he would retire instead of running for reelection after clashing with President Donald Trump. The state has not elected a Democratic senator since 1988, but the campaign was hard-fought, attracting more than $50 million in outside spending from the two parties and outside groups. The acrimony has continued during the protracted vote count, with Republican officials in Washington urging McSally’s campaign to suggest the count is somehow improper.

Arizona is one of two Senate races still uncalled after Election Day. The GOP has a slim lead in the Florida Senate race, which is going to a recount.

Republicans currently have a 51-49 majority in the Senate, but they have made a net gain of two seats so far in the midterm election, flipping Indiana, Missouri and North Dakota while Democrats have flipped Nevada.

Trump might still be able to play Rihanna’s music at rallies

Rihanna has struck a blow to the Donald Trump team by denying their rallies the rights to play her music. But the fight may not be over yet.

The music publishing company Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) has backed up Rihanna’s efforts to stop President Trump from using her songs at his rallies, according to Rolling Stone.  That could have implications for other artists, like Guns N’ Roses, that have pushed back against Trump’s use of their music

Unfortunately, the legal world of music licensing is so thorny that Trump rallies still might be able to bump Rihanna’s jams.

SEE ALSO: Rihanna wants Trump to please stop playing her music at his ‘tragic rallies’

On Nov. 4, Rihanna indicated in a tweet that she would attempt to stop Trump rallies from playing her songs, after she learned that a recent Tennessee rally featured her 2008 single “Don’t stop the music.”

One day later, reports surfaced that Rihanna had sent the Trump administration a cease and desist letter. The letter, via Rolling Stone, read:

“It has come to our attention that President Trump has utilized [Rihanna’s] musical compositions and master recordings, including her hit track ‘Don’t Stop the Music,’ in connection with a number of political events held across the United States.”

“As you are or should be aware, Ms. Fenty has not provided her consent to Mr. Trump to use her music. Such use is therefore improper.”

Then, on Thursday, BMI sent a similar cease and desist to the administration. This time, BMI referenced the specific “Political Entities License Agreement” that allowed the Trump campaign to play BMI-licensed music. It said that the agreement no longer covered Rihanna’s music, as she had revoked her permission. Also via Rolling Stone:

“BMI has received a communication from Robyn Fenty, professionally known as ‘Rihanna,’ objecting to the Trump Campaign’s use of Rihanna’s musical works.”

“As such … this letter serves as notice that Rihanna’s musical works are excluded from [an agreement between BMI and the Trump Campaign for song usage], and any performance of Rihanna’s musical works by the Trump Campaign from this date forward is not authorized by BMI.”

No more RiRi at rallies, right?! Not so fast.

“You have to look at the scope of the letter,” music attorney Kamal Moo said.

The political entities license is a blanket agreement that covers how politicians can use the BMI catalogue. Based on the political entities license that BMI has online, it appears that artists do have the right to revoke permission — so Rihanna exercised this right.

“BMI would be well within their right to revoke the campaign’s use of Rihanna’s songs pursuant to this language,” Moo said.

However, Moo explained that that license may fall under the category of a traveling license, which means it covers campaign events on the road.

BMI also has licensing agreements with specific venues. So if a politician holds a rally at a BMI-licensed venue, such as the Los Angeles Staples Center, that politician might still be able to use music from the BMI catalogue, including Rihanna.

“That could be an issue,” Moo said. “I would hope that they would be clear that they can’t play this in any venue at all.”

Mashable has reached out to BMI to learn if the agreement covers all events, whether at a BMI-licensed venue, or not, and will update this story when and if we hear back.

Music attorney Doron F. Eghbali disagrees with Moo, and thinks that the revocation should cover all events; revoking privilege should be enough. But he sees another issue that could prevent Rihanna from barring her music from Trump rallies: that cease and desist letters are legally toothless.

“Cease and desist does not have an enforcement mechanism,” Eghbali said. “It’s just a notice that they’re going to take you to court. But just by receiving cease and desist, it doesn’t do anything. It has to have a court order behind it to back it up.”

Eghbali said that actual legal action is unlikely. The process would be costly, and Rihanna’s team would have to prove damages to win an injunction.

However, RiRi’s never been one to shy away from a fight. And, let’s be honest: hers is not the team we’d bet on to lose.

Winners, Losers, Takeaways from Sixers-Wolves Trade for Jimmy Butler

Minnesota Timberwolves' Jimmy Butler plays in an NBA basketball game against the Los Angeles Lakers Monday, Oct. 29, 2018, in Minneapolis. The Timberwolves won 124-120. (AP Photo/Jim Mone)

Jim Mone/Associated Press

Seven weeks after his trade request became public, Jimmy Butler finally got his wish. On Saturday, the Minnesota Timberwolves put an end to the league’s longest-running circus by agreeing to deal the four-time All-Star, along with injured second-year center Justin Patton, to the Philadelphia 76ers for a package that includes big man Dario Saric, wing Robert Covington, guard Jerryd Bayless and a 2022 second-round pick.

The deal was first announced by Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.

With this trade, the Timberwolves can put the Butler saga behind them, while the Sixers are going all-in on contending in the Eastern Conference this year and beyond. But the implications of the trade are wide-ranging for the entire league.

Winner: The Timberwolves’ locker room

Chris Szagola/Associated Press

The toll this Butler drama was taking on the Timberwolves was obvious to anyone who spent time around the team in the early part of the season. He was dictating when he would or would not play—usually coinciding with the Wolves’ national television appearances—and staying around the team in the locker room but not joining them on the bench during games.

He set the tone during training camp with a now-infamous hostile takeover of practice on Oct. 10, followed by an interview with ESPN’s Rachel Nichols in which he was unapologetic for the awkward position he was putting his teammates and the organization in as he attempted to force his way out of Minnesota.

Not that coach and team president Tom Thibodeau was blameless. He and general manager Scott Layden dragged their feet in trade talks, holding out hope they could convince Butler to stay and preserve their own job security with some wins in the short term. He also let Butler control the terms of the situation without any pushback, creating the (very fair) perception that he was holding his star to a different standard than the rest of the team. It created a toxic environment that didn’t make anyone look good.

With Butler finally out of the picture, the rest of the Timberwolves can move on quietly and try to salvage the season with hopefully a lot less drama.

Winner: Karl-Anthony Towns

Jim Mone/Associated Press

None of those Wolves players found themselves in the crosshairs of the Butler saga more than Towns. The relationship between the two stars was widely known to be irreparable.

Towns has opened the season shooting 45.9 percent from the field, by far the lowest mark of his career, while continuing to struggle defensively. His body language during games has made it obvious he isn’t enjoying any part of this, and it’s telling that his best games of the year have come when Butler has sat out.

Between his new contract and Butler’s departure, Towns is now the unquestioned face of the Timberwolves. He has the opportunity to rewrite a narrative that increasingly had been turning against him in the years since he took the NBA by storm in his rookie season. It’s up to him to make the most of that chance and lead the Wolves to a new era of success.

Loser: Eastern Conference Contenders

TORONTO, CAN - NOVEMBER 9: Kawhi Leonard #2 of the Toronto Raptors handles the ball against the New York Knicks on November 10, 2018 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada. NOTE TO USER: User expressly acknowledges and agrees that, by downloading and/or u

Ron Turenne/Getty Images

What was already shaping up to be a tight race at the top of the Eastern Conference just got even more crowded. In the early going, the 11-1 Toronto Raptors and 9-2 Milwaukee Bucks have set themselves apart, and there’s little doubt the Boston Celtics’ depth and star power see them eventually catch up and maybe even overtake those two teams as the favorite.

The Sixers, one of the preseason favorites to contend in the East, have started the season a step behind that competition thanks to a 1-5 start on the road. The combined non-shooting threat of Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz has proven a massive liability, leading to an offense that hasn’t run as smoothly as it should.

Adding Butler is a game-changer at both ends of the floor. He’s capable of running the offense when Simmons is off the floor as well as playing off the ball and providing another perimeter threat for Simmons to set up. Defensively, he’s been up to the task of matching up with the other team’s best perimeter player. There is no longer a question of who will guard Kawhi Leonard or Giannis Antetokounmpo in a playoff matchup with the Raptors or Bucks.

There is some long-term risk for the Sixers, with considerable reason to question how Butler’s game will age on his next contract. In the present, however, he’ll instantly make them better, and that’s bad news for the other East hopefuls.

Loser: The Heat

J Pat Carter/Associated Press

The trade market for Butler was softer than it should have been for a player of his caliber, in large part because most of the teams he was thought to be interested in joining—namely the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers—were reluctant to give up young players and picks for a rental when they would have had enough cap room to sign him outright in July.

The one exception was the Miami Heat, who engaged in serious talks with Minnesota over the past two months. The Heat desperately needed to add a star like Butler to vault themselves back into relevance in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. But unlike the Knicks or Clippers, Miami won’t have cap space anytime soon, with big and/or long-term contracts on their books for above-average-but-below-star-level players like Tyler Johnson, Hassan Whiteside, Kelly Olynyk, Dion Waiters, James Johnson and Josh Richardson.

The Heat’s only avenue to add an All-Star is by trading for one, and Butler was their best chance. Who knows when Pat Riley’s next opportunity will come along?

Credit where it’s due: The Bulls’ June 2017 trade of Butler to the Timberwolves was widely panned at the time, but it’s looked better with each passing day.

When the trade was made, the criticisms of the Bulls’ return were more than understandable. No. 7 overall pick Lauri Markkanen was an unknown, Kris Dunn was coming off an awful rookie season, and Zach LaVine was still recovering from a torn ACL. But Markkanen had a much better rookie year for the Bulls than anyone could have anticipated, and Dunn made significant strides at both ends of the floor in his first season in Chicago. Both of those players are injured to start the 2018-19 season, but LaVine is living up to a freshly signed four-year, $78 million contract, averaging 27.4 points per game and looking like a legitimate building block for the Bulls.

To be clear, the Bulls trade was also a no-brainer for the Timberwolves—Butler was coming off a career year and his first All-NBA selection, and pairing him with Towns was too good of an opportunity for Thibodeau to pass up. Their first year together was largely a success, resulting in the franchise’s first playoff appearance since 2004. Since then, however, the Timberwolves have become the league’s biggest soap opera thanks to Butler’s wanting out, and the package they got from the Sixers is clearly inferior to what they gave up to get him from the Bulls.

While Minnesota’s future is uncertain, the Bulls’ rebuild is in a good place. All three of the pieces they got in last year’s trade look like keepers, as does this year’s No. 7 pick, center Wendell Carter Jr. With a 3-9 start to the season, Chicago looks like a good bet to land a top-five pick in the upcoming draft lottery to add to what is becoming a promising young nucleus. They made the right decision to move on from Butler when they did.

Loser: Markelle Fultz

Fultz, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 draft, has not had the ideal start to his NBA career, to put it kindly. He barely played his rookie season due to a bizarre shoulder injury that led to him essentially forgetting how to shoot. He’s played more in his second year and has even started all 13 games thus far, but he’s still shooting just 39.5 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from three-point range.

Adding a domineering personality like Butler to a locker room with Fultz could be disastrous. He’s already had high-profile struggles with confidence in his young NBA career. The addition of Butler may make his situation untenable if his play doesn’t improve. It won’t be long before we hear talk of Fultz needing a fresh start somewhere else to revive his career.

Winner: Dario Saric

Michael Dwyer/Associated Press

Saric has struggled in his third season in Philadelphia with his offensive role lost in the shuffle next to Simmons and Embiid. In Minnesota, he will have the opportunity to be featured more in the offense and slot into the frontcourt next to Towns to provide a versatile offensive threat.

Saric will be eligible for an extension on his rookie contract this offseason, and a bigger role with the Timberwolves is more likely to get him paid than the secondary role he was struggling to adapt to in Philly. The Timberwolves have big contracts on the books for Towns, Andrew Wiggins and Gorgui Dieng, but if Saric turns his season around in a new environment and shows himself to be a future building block, he’ll be in a good position when it comes time to negotiate a new contract.

Loser: 2019 free-agency suitors

Ben Margot/Associated Press

This July, Butler will be one of the headliners of a loaded class of superstar free agents that also includes Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson and DeMarcus Cousins. Both New York teams and both Los Angeles teams will be among those with enough cap space to sign one or two of these names, and all of them are well known to be planning on going big-game hunting.

That free-agent pool already took a hit during training camp when Irving publicly committed to re-signing with Boston. Now, unless his pairing with Embiid and Simmons goes horribly awry this season, Butler is all but certain to re-up on a five-year deal in Philly worth nearly $200 million. The reason Butler was so adamant that he wanted to be traded to a desirable destination before he hit free agency was to be eligible to re-sign for a five-year max rather than sign somewhere else for just four years.

Philadelphia is a great spot for Butler, with the young superstar duo of Simmons and Embiid that’s poised to contend for years to come and a passionate fanbase that will embrace him right away. Between the money and the basketball situation, there’s no reason to think he’d go anywhere else this summer.

And so the Knicks, Nets, Lakers and Clippers will be competing for the services of a shrinking group of available stars. That’s before factoring in the possibility that Leonard stays in Toronto or that Durant and Thompson decide to keep the Warriors’ run going for a few more years. The big-market teams hoarding cap space to go superstar shopping may well come home empty-handed.

Winner: LeBron James

Jim Mone/Associated Press

For the past four years, LeBron James had made the Finals in Cleveland with supporting casts that ranged from “pretty good” to “extremely shaky.” That wouldn’t have been possible this year, when it can easily be argued that the top four teams in the East—Toronto, Milwaukee, Boston and this new-look version of the Sixers—are the four next-best teams in the league behind Golden State.

Not that James’ Lakers haven’t had their share of struggles in his first season in Los Angeles; they have plenty of issues that still need to get worked out. But as far as his legacy is concerned, nobody will hold it against him if he loses to the Warriors in the playoffs, because nobody in the Western Conference can be reasonably expected to beat one of the greatest teams in NBA history. James chose to sign with the Lakers knowing it would be an uphill battle to seriously contend, at least until they add another superstar in an upcoming free-agent class. The expectations for his first year in Hollywood are much lower than they would have been had he stayed in Cleveland, and his competition there would have been steeper than it ever was before.

James got out of the East at the exact right time, when it stopped being a foregone conclusion that his seasons there would end in a trip to the Finals. That was true before Saturday, but it’s doubly true now that the Sixers have added Butler.

Avenatti takes on Tucker Carlson after bar incident involving Fox News host’s children

Politics

In a statement, the Fox News host said the encounter was spurred by a country club patron harassing his daughter — leading to his son throwing wine at the man.

Michael Avenatti, who was once dubbed a “creepy porn lawyer” on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News program, claimed Saturday he’s “investigating an alleged assault … committed by T. Carlson” stemming from an incident at a Virginia restaurant.

The attorney, who is exploring a 2020 presidential run and rose to national prominence by representing porn star Stormy Daniels against President Donald Trump, posted video on his Twitter account Saturday showing Carlson in a verbal altercation at a country club and asks for help in identifying other people involved in the incident.

Story Continued Below

Carlson, in a lengthy statement provided through Fox News, said the incident began when a man at the club last month verbally harassed his teenage daughter on her way back from a bathroom and called her a “whore” and “cunt.”

He acknowledged that his son then confronted the man and threw wine at him. But Carlson maintains neither he nor his son assaulted the man involved. Avenatti disputed that account, saying it’s an “absolute lie.”

The video, caught on another patron’s cell phone, captures part of an argument involving Carlson and a man seated at the bar, whom Avenatti describes in the tweet as a “gay Latino immigrant.” Only a portion of the video was released.

“Guys. Guys, get the f— out of here,” Carlson, who is seen standing near the bar, can be heard saying. An individual in the video can be seen grabbing a man by the collar. That’s when another person intercedes: “Hey. Hey! … There’s no excuse for violence.” Another person interjects, asking: “Did you see what he did?”

Avenatti told POLITICO he is representing the man who was grabbed by the collar, describing him as the “victim” in the incident.

“We are attempting to locate additional witnesses and to identify those depicted in the video. In particular, we need assistance identifying the balding man that grabs the man seated at the bar. We anticipate charges being filed,” Avenatti wrote on Twitter. “Anyone with knowledge, pls contact us.”

In another Tweet, Avenatti added: “We are investigating an alleged assault on a gay latino immigrant committed by T. Carlson and/or members of his inner circle at a club in VA in Oct. It likely includes underage drinking in violation of VA law.”

In a statement released by a spokeswoman for Fox News, Carlson said the incident depicted in the video took place on Oct. 13 at the Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he was having dinner with two of his children.

“Toward the end of the meal, my 19-year-old daughter went to the bathroom with a friend,” Carlson said in the statement. “On their way back through the bar, a middle aged man stopped my daughter and asked if she was sitting with Tucker Carlson. My daughter had never seen the man before. She answered: ‘That’s my dad,’ and pointed to me. The man responded, ‘Are you Tucker’s whore?’ He then called her a ‘fucking cunt.’”

Carlson continued: “My daughter returned to the table in tears. She soon left the table and the club. My son, who is also a student, went into the bar to confront the man. I followed. My son asked the man if he’d called his sister a ‘whore’ and a ‘cunt.’ The man admitted he had, and again become profane. My son threw a glass of red wine in the man’s face and told him to leave the bar, which he soon did.”

Carlson said he detailed the incident to country club’s management, and the club revoked the man’s membership last week following an investigation.

“I love my children. It took enormous self-control not to beat the man with a chair, which is what I wanted to do,” Carlson said in the statement. “I think any father can understand the overwhelming rage and shock that I felt seeing my teenage daughter attacked by a stranger. But I restrained myself. I did not assault this man, and neither did my son. That is a lie. Nor did I know the man was gay or Latino, not that it would have mattered. What happened on October 13 has nothing to do with identity politics. It was a grotesque violation of decency. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.”

Both Avenatti and Carlson have gathered heightened attention in recent months. In September, Avenatti sat across from Carlson in a Fox interview as the chyron underneath them read “Creepy Porn Lawyer Toying with 2020 Run.”

Carlson’s primetime, hour-long program — “Tucker Carlson Tonight” — has come under increased scrutiny in recent months as media critics have called out the anchor for what they consider increasingly nativist and offensive segments during his broadcast.

Roughly 30 protesters from the anti-racist, anti-fascist group Smash Racism DC demonstrated outside Carlson’s home Wednesday, harassing his family to such a degree that his wife locked herself in the kitchen pantry and called 911, Carlson said.

Fox News called the protests “reprehensible” in a statement Thursday. “The violent threats and intimidation tactics toward him and his family are completely unacceptable. We as a nation have become far too intolerant of different points of view,” said Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott and President Jay Wallace. “Recent events across our country clearly highlight the need for a more civil, respectful, and inclusive national conversation.”

Carlson in March remarked on his show that “no nation, no society has ever changed this much this fast,” and said America’s shifting demographic landscape was “more change than human beings are designed to digest.”

And in September, Carlson asked on-air, “How, precisely, is diversity our strength?” He added: “Can you think, for example, of other institutions such as, I don’t know, marriage or military units in which the less people have in common, the more cohesive they are? Do you get along better with your neighbors or your coworkers if you can’t understand each other or share no common values?”

Avenatti has drawn his own criticism of late. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley referred the attorney and his client Julie Swetnick to the Department of Justice for investigation, accusing them of making false statements against Brett Kavanaugh during a sexual misconduct investigation. Avenatti also drew fire after he was recently quoted in Time saying that the Democrat to run against Trump in 2020 better be a white male. Avenatti said the remark was taken out of context.

Victoria’s Secret exec apologizes for ‘insensitive’ anti-trans comment

Another day, another non-apology from a man.

Victoria’s Secret issued a message on behalf of its Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Ed Razek, clarifying statements that Razek made in Vogue about why the lingerie brand hasn’t cast trans models in its tentpole fashion shows.

SEE ALSO: Victoria’s Secret announced its list of ‘What Is Sexy’ and it’s the worst

Razek originally stated that Victoria’s Secret has not and should not cast trans models because they’re not consistent with the “fantasy,” as he called it, presented by the show. Now, Razek says that the company has never cast trans models because they simply didn’t make the cut, not because of their gender. And that Victoria’s Secret would “absolutely cast a transgender model.”

If you’re scratching your head at this circular logic, and wondering whether this statement really contradicts in any way the idea that trans models aren’t part of the “fantasy” that Victoria’s Secret tries to present — well folks, you’re not alone!

Let’s break it down.

70-year-old white male Ed Razek is one of the people who casts the extravagant objectification-palooza that is the Victoria’s Secret fashion show. Featuring models like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner in angel wings and Scottish tartan-adorned underwear, Victoria’s Secret broadcasts the show of tall, thin, near-naked women on ABC in December. A holiday spectacular!

Razek recently gave an interview to Vogue about the show, the brand, and its place in a lingerie market that now includes more inclusive and diverse brands, like Rihanna’s Fenty. In the interview, Razek was clear: Victoria’s Secret is not a brand for everybody, nor should it be. It will continue to promote and cater to a very specific Hadid-esque body type.

“We market to who we sell to, and we don’t market to the whole world,” Razek said.

To that end, Victoria’s Secret has considered putting plus-size and transgender models in its shows, but ultimately decided against it. That’s because the company needs to stay true to its brand, to the “fantasy” it’s selling – which, to be clear, is “physically fit” women, as Razek described them. And that fantasy does not include plus-size or transgender (transsexual, as Razek calls them) women:

Shouldn’t you have transsexuals in the show? No. No, I don’t think we should. Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy. It’s a 42-minute entertainment special. That’s what it is.

It’s rare these days to see such a bald-faced embrace of an obvious-if-unpopular truth. Why doesn’t Victoria’s Secret cast trans or plus-size models? Because it’s not the thin-cis-tits-out-fantasy that they’re selling. Duh!

So, naturally, Razek and Victoria’s Secret had to walk back the comments. And to do so, the company issued a… very confusing statement!

My remark regarding the inclusion of transgender models in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show came across as insensitive. I apologize. To be clear, we absolutely would cast a transgender model for the show. We’ve had transgender models come to castings… and like many others, they didn’t make it… But it was never about gender. I admire and respect their journey to embrace who they really are.

Razek essentially says that he and his crew has not cast trans models because they “didn’t make it” — that is, they weren’t who the people charged with casting were looking for.

Oh, why is that you ask? Because Razek, who is, as he said, trying to promote the “fantasy” of the brand, says they didn’t make it! The models did not fit Razek’s idea of a Victoria’s Secret model. Ergo, they are not Victoria’s Secret models. Decoupling that truth from their gender is disingenuous and honestly, nonsensical.

Ed Razek specifically said trans models didn’t make it in past shows because they weren’t a part of the “fantasy” that they were trying to sell. So yes, they did deny trans models opportunities in the past simply because of their gender. https://t.co/GiwGkNX7vD

— Raquel Willis (@RaquelWillis_) November 10, 2018

Razek’s statement was clear and honest. Victoria’s Secret “absolutely would” cast a trans model if she made the cut. But, the unspoken implication based on the company’s brand and past actions dictates that she would never make the cut, because it’s people like Razek deciding what is sexy, what is part of the fantasy. And as Razek stated previously, that doesn’t include trans women.

Here’s the thing: let’s not allow the opinions of men like Razek nor the business objectives of corporations decide what is sexy.

It would be a “statement” — perhaps even a victory — if Victoria’s Secret cast a transgender model in its iconic runway show. It would say, yes, you are part of the “fantasy” of what we think is sexy, too. And that could mean a lot to a lot of people.

WHO 👏🏻 IS 👏🏻 THE 👏🏻 VICTORIA’S 👏🏻 SECRET 👏🏻 FASHION 👏🏻 SHOW 👏🏻 FOR 👏🏻

because if it is to sell products, it should feature the full spectrum of folks who want to buy products. especially since thin, cis-gendered women aren’t the only ones who wear fancy underwear. clearly!

— Anne T. Donahue (@annetdonahue) November 10, 2018

But perhaps that attitude sustains the power of Victoria’s Secret, when what we really should be doing is continuing to deflate that authority — shrinking its power alongside its fast-falling sales. Courting Victoria Secret’s acceptance of trans models implies that the company can, does, and should have the power to decide what is sexy. Why do we still allow them to have this power?

We know what Victoria’s Secret stands for; people like Razek, and the dozens of near-identical bodies they put on their runways, make that very clear. That runway no longer gets to be an arbiter of what is sexy.

Who the hell needs Victoria’s Secret’s approval when we’ve got Rihanna?
