The top of the Associated Press poll remained unchanged, but the remainder of the Top 25 continued its state of flux after another weekend full of upsets.
Alabama tightened its stranglehold on the No. 1 ranking with a sound win over Mississippi State, while Clemson remained No. 2 after it took down Boston College on the road. Notre Dame, Michigan and Georgia round out the Top Five.

Alabama has not given up a point in its last two games, outscoring LSU and Mississippi State 53-0. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had his worst statistical game of the 2018 season in Saturday’s 24-0 win, but the Crimson Tide defense held the Bulldogs to 169 yards of total offense.
“I think in this day and age, you not only get judged on whether you win, but you get judged on how you win,” head coach Nick Saban told reporters. “I never thought I’d ever be in position to say that you get style points, but the way our system is, that may be the way it is.”
With no losses from Top 10 teams—though Oklahoma made it close against rival Oklahoma State—the highest-ranked squad to take a plunge this week is former No. 12 Kentucky, which couldn’t get anything going offensively in a 24-7 loss at Tennessee. The Wildcats turned the ball over three times and were held to 262 total yards.
“I thought we were very prepared going into the game, but it showed on the field that we weren’t,” Kentucky tight end C.J. Conrad told reporters. “They were more hungry than us tonight for whatever reason.”
Also taking a plunge this week among the ranked were Fresno State and North Carolina State. The Bulldogs allowed Boise State to score the game’s final 21 points in a 24-17 road loss on the blue turf, while NC State was upended by a late touchdown in a 27-23 home loss to Wake Forest.
Fresno State, NC State and Michigan State moved out of the Top 25. No. 21 Utah, No. 23 Boise State and No. 24 Northwestern moved in as replacements.
The College Football Playoff committee will release its next rankings Tuesday.

Fourteen kilometres into the Athens marathon, Athanasia Tsoumeleka, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist, was overcome with emotion.
With tears in her eyes, she stopped running and began walking among a black-clad crowd lining the street.
That was because she had just reached Mati, the grief-stricken coastal village near Greece‘s capital, Athens, where 99 people lost their lives to devastating wildfires some three months ago.
“It was as if you were breathing the souls of the people that perished,” Tsoumeleka, winner of the women’s 20km walk in the Athens Olympics, told Al Jazeera.
“The race felt like it was honouring the lost lives.
“You could see that the people were trying to be happy and support us but there was endless grief in their eyes,” the 36-year-old said.

A record 18,750 participants from 105 countries on Sunday ran the historic 42km route of the Athens Classic Marathon, cutting right across Mati and passing through decimated forest areas as well as blackened and burnt houses.
Banners saying “I will not forget” and “99 victims” were hung along the way, as black balloons flew into the sky.
The spectators, many of whom were dressed in plan mourning black or dark t-shirts emblazoned with the words “I love Mati”, cheered and clapped to encourage the passing runners.

“It was like a dignified protest but they were our warmest supporters,” Irini Vartzioti, who ran the race for the second time, told Al Jazeera.
“It was very distressing. Everything was burned, and the people on either side of the road were dressed in black – you couldn’t help but start crying,” she said.
“Many of the runners and the viewers around me were also crying.”
Like Tsoumeleka, Vartzioti also stopped briefly when she reached Mati. She cut a small olive tree brunch from the side of the road among the charred forest which she carried until the finish line.
On July 23, gale-force winds fanned soaring walls of flames that raged through Mati, a popular resort in the southern Attica region.
The blaze, one of the worst disasters to hit the country in recent decades, caught mostly local holidaymakers in their vehicles and residents of the seaside town in their houses.
At least 99 people were eventually declared dead, many of whom had unsuccessfully attempted to flee into the sea, the only available shelter from the encroaching fire. In one case, authorities found the charred bodies of 26 trapped people, including small children, huddled closely together close to the edge of a steep cliff overlooking the coast.

The tragedy plunged Greece, a crisis-hit country still down to its knees after years of recession, into mourning and underscored chronic grievances over inadequate emergency response and poor urban planning.
In the lead-up to this year’s marathon, organisers said they would keep the original route that goes through Mati amid hopes to raise awareness and begin the “green revival” of the affected areas.
The Hellenic Athletic Federation (SEGAS) urged official sponsors and partners to participate in the effort with the launch of “Runners’ Forest“, a project seeking to plant trees over a four-kilometre stretch along the decimated marathon course.
“Lives were lost, the environment was destroyed, thousands of people suffered,” Kostas Panagopoulos, head of SEGAS, told a press conference.
“We feel deep respect for the memory of the people who perished and that is why we are taking an initiative to reforest the marathon route.”

Green bandanas with the project’s logo were also distributed at the beginning of the race and runners wore them in a gesture of camaraderie and support.
Kenyan Brimin Kipkokir Misoi finished first in the men’s race, covering the distance in 2:10:56, while fellow Kenyan Shelmith Muriuki won the women’s event in 2:36:46.
Dubbed “The Authentic”, the Athens marathon has given its name to all other long-distance footraces around the world.
It marks the legendary feat of a soldier in 5th Century BC Greece who is supposed to have run in full armour the distance from Marathon to Athens to announce the Athenian victory over the Persians and then died.

The Camp Fire largely turned Paradise — a town of over 26,000 — to ash while burning fleeing victims alive in their cars. On the other side of the state, in palm tree-laden Malibu, the city posted an urgent, ominous message on Nov. 9 as the Woosley Fire approached:
“Fire is burning out of control, heading into populated areas of Malibu. All residents evacuate now.”
These late-season fall fires — stoked by weather but enhanced by global warming — have taken at least 23 lives. Below are 3 reputable, vetted ways to help those who have fled or are combating the nation’s latest environmental catastrophe.
Charity Navigator, an organization that evaluates charity programs in the U.S., has provided a list of recommended places to donate. They note that these charities “are confirmed to be working to provide relief to the individuals and communities affected by these devastating fires in Southern and Northern California.”
Presently there are four listed charities, which include: Direct Relief, Humane Society of Sonoma County, ICNA Relief USA, and the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties.
The California Fire Foundation provides “financial assistance to families of fallen firefighters, firefighters and the communities they protect.”
One of the foundation’s programs, Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency (SAVE), is particularly relevant: It provides emergency, short-term financial assistance.
For a direct, local impact, the Los Angeles Fire Department foundation is asking for donations to provide hydration backpacks to LAFD firefighters currently battling large flames in Southern California.

GoFundMe has created a central web page hub for helping those impacted by the California wildfires.

By Alexis NeddGeorge RR Martin may not be writing any of the Game of Thrones prequel series, but he certainly has insider knowledge about the stories they’ll tell.
And he just spilled the beans on two of them.

While Martin had hinted on his blog that one of the not-yet-greenlit series has something to do with the Targaryens, he revealed in an interview with The Guardian that “at least two of them are solidly based on material in Fire and Blood. Those haven’t been greenlit yet.”
Fire and Blood is a canon history of the Targaryen conquest, which is what happened when Daenerys and Jon’s great-great-super-great grandparents rained, well…fire and blood on the continent of Westeros.
In the conquest, Aegon the Conquerer (who Jon Snow is named after) and his two sister-wives took over the seven kingdoms and unified them under House Targaryen by convincing their leaders to bend the knee — something their Thrones-era descendants seem to have a knack for as well.
Martin mentioned that the other prequels are “all over the map,” which could mean stories taking place across the Narrow Sea and beyond.
The interview also touched on Martin’s progress with writing The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited next book in A Song of Ice and Fire. Martin described Winds as “a dozen novels” and stressed that its complexity was part of the reason its release is delayed.
As for what comes after The Winds of Winter, Martin said that he’s not sure if he’ll go straight into writing the final book in the series.
“The Winds of Winter is next, then I’ll decide what comes after that – whether it’s to go on to A Dream of Spring, the last one, or whether I switch back into Fire and Blood II, do another Dunk and Egg story or two. But I’ll worry about that one thing at a time – that’s too far ahead.”
And so the wait continues for The Winds of Winter and the final season of Game of Thrones, but at least there’s new prequel news to be excited about.

The UN chief has said the world today has several of the ingredients that led to the failure of the peace that followed World War I, in comments marking the 100th anniversary of the end of that conflict, as the leaders of France and Germany warned about the dangers of nationalism.
Without referring to Donald Trump by name, all three of them on Sunday railed against the US president’s world view and the dangers of disregarding international norms as they spoke at the start of the Paris Peace Forum in the French capital.
“As I see it, several elements today have many parallels with both the start of the 20th century and the 1930s, giving us grounds to fear that an unpredictable chain of events could ensue,” Antonio Guterres, the United Nations secretary-general, said.

For her part, Angela Merkel, the chancellor of Germany, expressed her “concern” that “blinkered nationalist views may gain ground once again”.
Merkel warned that the benefits of international cooperation, “the peaceful balancing of interests, even the European peace project – people are calling them into question again.”
Her comments came shortly after French President Emmanuel Macron made similar remarks, seemingly aimed at Trump who in a recent speech called himself a nationalist.
During his 20-minute speech, Macron called nationalism “the exact opposite” of the patriotism shown by soldiers.
“Nationalism is a betrayal,” he said.
“By saying our interests come first and others don’t matter we are erasing what makes a nation precious, what makes it live, what makes it great and most importantly of all, its moral values,” he told those in attendance, which included Trump among others.
“Let us build our hopes rather than playing our fears against each other.”

The French president also called on his fellow leaders to not forget the lessons of the past.
“Ruining this hope with a fascination for isolation, violence or domination would be a mistake for which future generations would rightly find us responsible,” Macron said.
In a speech at the Suresnes military cemetery in the western Paris suburb, Trump paid tribute to US soldiers who took part in World War I.
The US president said he and other officials were “gathered at this hallowed resting place to pay tribute to brave Americans” who died a century ago, as well as to the French troops with whom they fought.
Sunday’s speeches were part of a string of events to commemorate the signing of an armistice on November 11, 1918, to end World War I.
That conflict erupted in 1914 after a teenage Bosnian Serb assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, igniting a conflict that was contemporaneously described as “the war to end all wars”.
In the four years of fighting, remembered for brutal trench warfare and the first large-scale use of gas as a weapon, France, British, Russia and the US had the main opposed a German-led coalition that also included the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires.
More than 70 million military personnel were mobilised and an estimated 10 million lost their lives.

By Mark KaufmanAs thousands of firefighters battled uncontrolled flames in both Northern and Southern California on Saturday, President Trump tweeted out an ill-informed, distorted message about the cause of these deadly autumn infernos.
But the firefighting community quickly rebutted the president’s rash claims, wherein he blamed “gross mismanagement of the forests,” while also threatening to cut federal support to fire management efforts.
There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor. Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!

As firefighters, fire researchers, and climate scientists largely agree, mismanaged forests — which generally means wooded areas that haven’t been allowed to naturally burn and reduce vulnerable vegetation — are just one part of a complex, growing wildfire problem in the U.S. Rather, today’s historic wildfire woes are a confluence of weather events, human-building, climate change, and mismanaged forests.
As the Pasadena Fire Association pointed out on Twitter, “Mr. President, with all due respect, you are wrong.”

In Southern California, where the Woolsey Fire (as of Nov. 10 at 8:30 p.m.) had burned over 83,000 acres and forced Hollywood stars and wildlife alike to flee to the beaches, mismanaged forests are not to blame. The affected areas aren’t overgrown pine forests, but grasslands and other coastal or near-coastal shrublands, known as chaparral.
There’s nothing to log here, noted Crystal Kolden, a former wildland firefighter and associate professor in forest rangeland and fire sciences at the University of Idaho, countered on Twitter.

A continuing problem in Southern California, like in many Western areas, is that populations have expanded into dry areas that naturally burn, known as the urban-wildlife interface. Deadly fires often burn through these communities, as they’ve repeatedly done in California — jumping major freeways and torching suburban homes.
This requires local and political solutions, such as intelligently reducing dry vegetation near these communities, or building fire-resistant homes, fire scientist Michael Gollner explained on Friday.

Exacerbating matters, fires everywhere are now burning more land, burning for longer, and becoming more destructive — and climate change is a potent contributor. Simply put, hotter climes suck moisture out of the land, leaving profoundly dried out, tinder-ready grasslands and forests.
Although fire season should be winding down in California, a vast swath of the state is still experiencing record dryness — notably in Northern California where the Camp Fire burned people to death in their vehicles.
“This is a big deal,” U.S. Forest Service meteorologist Brenda Belongie, referring the record dryness, said Friday.
Wildfires are largely stoked by weather and gusty winds, but solving the growing problem doesn’t have a quick forest management fix, as the president contends.
For that reason, amid new fires that have killed at least 23 people, the firefighting community has found the president’s ignorant fire-messaging to be repugnant. The International Association of Firefighters, of note, offered the Commander-in-Chief some stark words:
Firefighters understand the complexity and influences of today’s flames. But their mission now is to help subdue the blazes, so firefighters haven’t tolerated President Trump’s wrong-headed, oversimplified message.
As the International Association of Firefighters said: “To minimize the crucial, life-saving work being done and to make crass suggestions such as cutting off funding during a time of crisis shows a troubling lack of real comprehension about the disaster at hand and the dangerous job our fire fighters do.”

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will not play Sunday against the Tennessee Titans because of back and ankle injuries.
Kevin Duffy of the Boston Herald reported Saturday that Gronkowski was unlikely to play.
Gronkowski had already missed two games prior to Sunday with the injuries. His performance has been hindered throughout the year, potentially because of long-term wear and tear on his body from nine NFL seasons.
Through seven games, Gronkowski has 448 receiving yards and one touchdown on 29 receptions. The five-time Pro Bowler’s 15.4 yards per catch is his lowest mark since 2014, and his 64.0 receiving yards per game is his worst since his rookie season in 2010.
The Patriots have kept their offense moving with a diminished Gronkowski. Josh Gordon has taken over as Tom Brady‘s big-play target, averaging 18.0 yards per reception in six games, and James White and Julian Edelman have been Brady’s favorite targets and safety nets underneath to keep the chains moving.
New England is one of the few teams in the NFL that can afford to sit a player of Gronkowski’s caliber without skipping a beat. Veteran Dwayne Allen will take over as the Patriots’ No. 1 tight end until Gronk is healthy enough to get back on the field.

When the skies darkened overhead, Zied Harb Hediethat al-Hamaydeh and his six daughters had already been for a while in their orchard picking olives.
But as the thunder rolled into the Jordanian district of Mlaih, unleashing an unrelenting torrent, there was not much time to act.
The father and four of his daughters were swept away and drowned in the flash floods that devastated parts of the country during Friday’s heavy storm.
One of the daughters, aged five, is still missing 48 hours later. Another one, an eight-year-old, was rescued and is currently in critical condition at the hospital.
Overall, at least 12 people were killed and dozens were wounded in the flooding, while thousands of tourists were evacuated more from the ancient city of Petra and other popular tourist destinations.
Health officials at al-Nadeem hospital in Madaba, some 30km south of the capital, Amman, told Al Jazeera that the cause of death of all 11 victims brought there was drowning.
Among them were Zied al-Saraheen, a 24-year-old shepherd also from Mlaih who was out tending his flock of sheep, and Harith Naser al-Jbour, a civil defence officer who was swept away by the surging waters while trying to save others.
The 12th victim was from the southern city of Maan.

The disaster hit as Jordan was still reeling from last month’s flash floods in the Dead Sea area which killed at least 21 people, including many schoolchildren.
According to the state-run Petra news agency, Prime Minister Omar al-Razzaz has been “following up in detailed and accurate manner” the situation in the aftermath of the latest flash floods from the National Center for Security and Crisis Management, a state-of-the-art “war room” created to manage national crises.
Last month, the al-Razzaz government was heavily criticised on social media and in the press for its “mishandling” and its “chaotic” response to the crisis. Two government ministers were forced to resign as a result.
Though flooding is not a new phenomenon in Jordan, the havoc it wrecked over the past few weeks and the large number of victims it caused has raised alarm among experts who warn of dire consequences if the government does not take a number of measures – including land use planning and infrastructure development – to prevent such tragedies.
The frequency of heavy downpours that quickly cause destructive flash floods has increased in recent decades, according to Jordanian water and climate experts.
They say this is directly tied to a chronic lack of urban planning and failed government policies that allowed cities and towns to spread over previously undeveloped land without taking into consideration neither the impact of the urban sprawl on the environment nor the country’s changing climate.
These disorganised expansions have resulted in the creation of “chaotic concrete jungles” that have covered up vast areas in Amman and other cities – land that in the past was absorbing rainfall and turning it into groundwater.

Sara Abu Hammour, an Amman-based civil engineer and an environmental expert, told Al Jazeera that while climate change affects Jordan like any other country, authorities have not undertaken proper land use planning that would have prepared it for the rising heat in the summer and the increased sudden heavy rainfall in the winter.
She added that the lack of appropriate planning to accommodate a rising population – amid the influx of millions of refugees from neighbouring countries in recent decades – has also strained the country’s infrastructure and created conditions that increase the likelihood of natural disasters.
“Without the open areas that soaked up rainfalls or the presence of modern sewer systems, heavy downpour turns into destructive flash floods,” said Hammour, who is the author of a 2013 scientific study about the impact of climate change in Jordan that proposed rainwater management solutions to prevent flooding.
“Jordan is simply not prepared for what nature has in store for it.”

Citing past floods that hit the Amman region in the 1990s and Petra in the 1960s, he said the government had not learned the lessons from previous disasters due to the absence of proper records documenting previous occurrences of flooding.
“Lack of data”, he told Al Jazeera, “made the country vulnerable to destructive flash floods similar to those that took place in recent weeks.”
Al-Bashir argued that “part of the reasons for such destruction and the tragic loss of life, in addition to the lack of proper planning and natural disaster preparations, is the lack of coordination and communication between the various government agencies.”

For his part, Tharwat al-Masalha, a former commissioner of the Petra Tourist and Development Regional Authority from 2014-17, pointed to the lack of geological and hydrological studies needed to help create mechanisms to identify where flash floods are more likely to occur.
He pointed to an-early warning system installed during his tenure at Petra Infrastructure Authority to guard against sudden flash floods – a tool, he said, that to his knowledge is not in use elsewhere in the country.
Al-Masalha said the particular location of Petra, an important archaeological site surrounded by more than 1,600 metres of elevation, makes it susceptible to sudden flooding.
Because of its topography, he said, authorities “installed gages in the upstream areas that would send alarm signals to a control station should the level of rain reach a certain level”.
“The system”, he added, “kicked in and was the key factor in averting a catastrophic situation enabling the local authorities to evacuate about 4,000 foreign tourists from the path of flash floods.”

Matt McCoy is a State Senator from Iowa’s 21st District.
On the morning of April 7, 2006, two FBI agents knocked on my door. They informed me that I was being investigated about issues related to bribery and violation of the Hobbs Act. As I tried to recall what the Hobbs Act entailed (robbery and extortion, mostly), they prolonged their visit by pressing “play” on a tape recorder. I was shocked to hear a conversation I had conducted with my business colleague, Tom Vasquez.

That conversation detailed a dispute we had, regarding my consulting with Vasquez about a business that sold monitoring systems for senior citizens in Iowa. The federal government believed that in my demanding that payment for those services, and threatening to strike out on my own as a competitor, I had made what amounted to a threat to use the power of my office against him.
The FBI claimed this threat was extortion by an elected Iowa state senator. I explained how I had filed the required Senate financial disclosure forms, and that as citizen legislators who work in the capitol for less than one third of the year, we have to have other employment, hence this dispute. They disagreed, arguing that my comments amounted to an attempt to coerce Vasquez. The Des Moines Register reported during my eventual trial that numerous Iowa officials had “denied threats by McCoy, and insisted that no single senator would have the power to influence purchasing decisions” by the state.
However, not satisfied with snaring just me in their net, the agents went on to say that if I gave them the names of other elected officials engaged in illegal activities, the District Court might be inclined to look favorably on me. The district office was led by a prosecutor named Matt Whitaker, then the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Iowa. Whitaker, an avowed conservative who has run for state office multiple times as a Republican, was part of what would come to be widely considered as a politically motivated effort by the Department of Justice to investigate Democratic officeholders.
At the time, David Yepsen of the Register wrote: “It appears the U.S. attorney, Matt Whitaker, is aggressively going after the city’s south-side Democratic organization and the way it does business.” You could call it due diligence, and, to be clear, the investigation and secret recording of my conversations was done in a fully legal manner. But if you consider Whitaker’s naked partisanship, as Yepsen did, and the fact that a study at the time showed that the Ashcroft and Gonzales Departments of Justice prosecuted Democrats to an extent grossly disproportionate to Republicans, you could refer to it as something very different. In Whitaker’s own recent words: a “witch hunt.”
The FBI agents who visited me that day were saying that if I snitched on my Senate colleagues, Whitaker’s office might be lenient with me. This is all standard practice for the Department of Justice, of course, and similar to the tactics that Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who Whitaker has repeatedly criticized, has used in his ongoing investigation—but ignoring the fact that I had no knowledge of what I was supposed to have done illegally, let alone knowledge of illegal actions on the part of others, I would never have played that game.
This was the first I knew I was under federal scrutiny. The FBI paid Vasquez to record 12 hours of our conversations. They turned over the tapes to the grand jury. The jury returned a one-count indictment against me for attempted extortion under the Hobbs Act, which more specifically is a federal anti-racketeering law used in cases involving public corruption. It sets a low bar for conviction of public officials. The charge stemmed from the threat to form my own company. The FBI admitted to paying at least $2,200 to Vasquez for clandestinely taping our conversations. If I were convicted, it could have meant a $250,000 fine and 20 years imprisonment.
Whitaker’s entire case was built on the word of Vasquez, the star witness, whose credibility was undermined by a litany of personal issues he acknowledged under oath. In cross-examination, Vasquez had amnesia. “I can’t recall,” “I don’t remember,” was his response to over 100 questions.
That the FBI paid Vasquez for his testimony was unheard of. The former editor of the Des Moines Register’s editorial page, Gilbert Cranberg, stated, “The local criminal defense bar was stunned that the government had to pay the alleged victim for his help prosecuting his purported victimizer,” in an editorial for the Nieman Watchdog. In a local news journal, he wrote: “Was McCoy’s prosecution a product of poor judgment, inexperience, misplaced zeal or partisan politicking? Perhaps some or all of the above.”
I was eventually acquitted after the jury deliberated for less than 25 minutes, according to the foreman. Cranberg noted in the Register, “The case against McCoy was so anorexic that not one of the 12 jurors considered it worth protracted consideration.” One of my attorneys, Montgomery Brown, stated, “Ninety percent of federal court cases result in a conviction, and the swift ‘not guilty’ verdict indicates something was seriously wrong with Whitaker’s case.”
U.S. attorneys conveniently “forgot” that they approved to pay Vasquez to covertly tape his conversations with me, a revelation that came out in the wind-up to my trial. There were no consequences for this. In denying our motion to dismiss the case, the court said this was an unfortunate “lapse of memory.” Had I had such a lapse, I would have been cuffed and hauled off to prison.
According to my attorney, Jerry Crawford, during the trial he walked over to the prosecuting attorneys and asked them to save face, saying, “Pull this case now. I’m embarrassed for the United States of America.” Both of the attorneys he spoke to, one of whom had been flown in from Washington, D.C. by the DOJ, said they were instructed to carry out the case to its fullest extent. Somebody in Washington—or in Whitaker’s office—was making this call, and the trial prosecutors didn’t have control over it. They knew they were out-lawyered, and they were getting slaughtered daily in court. But they couldn’t bring it to a close, which would have saved them both money and time.
Whitaker’s office clearly wanted to give the evangelical right within the Republican Party a trophy, and that trophy was me—one of the state’s most prominent young Democrats at the time. Whitaker is a social conservative who supported the Iowa Christian Alliance, the pre-eminent group in the state for like-minded conservatives. In 2014, he was executive director of the Foundation for Accountability and Civil Trust (FACT), a conservative watchdog, which Slate described as a “Dark Money-Funded Clinton Antagonist… [which] largely publicized what it described as ethical lapses by prominent Democrats and requested that government agencies and law enforcement investigate them.”
People should be very concerned with Whitaker’s elevation to acting attorney general. The DOJ is supposed to be blind to politics. Whitaker clearly is not.
At the time, I did not realize the full implications of what was happening to me, which had echoes in national politics. The U.S. attorney general at the time, Alberto Gonzales, was involved in a scandal where he was accused of firing eight U.S. prosecutors, who were all previously in good standing with the DOJ, for political reasons. The aforementioned study from the time suggests the DOJ was attacking the Democratic Party at its grassroots. Their insinuations of corruption sapped local Democrats of energy and created suspicion among their constituents.
At the time, the national Democratic Party had named me among the 100 up-and-coming Democratic leaders to watch. I was young. I was liberal. I was popular. I had never been defeated. I had flirted with running for Congress. And I was openly gay, which surely didn’t increase my popularity with social conservatives like Whitaker. Steve Deace, the conservative talk radio host, hosted Whitaker on his show in 2007 and referred to me derogatorily as “openly homo.” Whitaker said nothing, aside from protesting in favor of his impartiality. He said to Deace that he was “personally offended” by such accusations of partisanship, and that he “[didn’t] have time to direct investigations that I’m not specifically working on myself.”
Whitaker has attempted to establish his own career in Iowa politics. He lost a run for state treasurer in 2002, lost a Republican primary bid for the U.S. Senate in 2014, and he was not selected for a seat on the Iowa Supreme Court despite angling for the job. It’s hard to believe he could carry out the important job of United States Attorney General with a sense of fealty to the law and to the Constitution, rather than to the Republican Party.
The government’s invasion of my privacy during the case Whitaker’s office brought against me was hardly unusual for such an investigation, but considering my innocence and exculpation it was appalling: I was followed, my conversations were recorded, and my financial records were seized. Family members, co-workers, legislative colleagues and acquaintances were questioned. My emails were read. The emails and financial records of a business colleague were subpoenaed. My reputation and future were damaged. The emotional stress took its toll on my physical and mental health. I lost both actual and potential income, along with my savings. When the DOJ wields its power in a partisan manner, it ruins lives. Whitaker almost ruined mine.
I left in debt, and with and a shattered sense of security. Whitaker left noting his “complete confidence in the jury system.”
Hopefully that confidence endures to this day, regardless of what such a jury might have to say about his new benefactor.
