Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey told CNBC in early October he couldn’t talk about his departure from Facebook, but said “that it wasn’t my choice to leave.”

When he left the company in March 2017, there was speculation it was due to Luckey’s donation to a pro-Trump organization called Nimble America, a trolling group which spread memes against Hillary Clinton, as reported by The Daily Beast.

Now a Wall Street Journal report claims that Luckey was put on leave, then fired, and that he had told people recently it was due to his support of Donald Trump.

Following the revelations of Luckey’s donation, employees were reportedly angry that his support extended to Nimble America, which was founded by two moderators of subreddit /r/The_Donald, infamous for its casual misogyny and hate speech.

Citing internal Facebook emails, WSJ reports Luckey received a payout amounting to $100 million following his exit, and that he had been pressured by Facebook executives, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, to publicly voice support for libertarian candidate Gary Johnson in the aftermath of the donation.

However, sources who spoke to the publisher said that Luckey being fired for his politics was “too simplistic” an assertion, and that his lack of honesty amid the donation debacle and a diminishing role at Oculus were bigger factors.

Facebook has long denied Luckey’s departure had anything to do with his politics, with Zuckerberg reiterating this during his testimony to Congress in April. A Facebook spokesperson told WSJ via email, “We can say unequivocally that Palmer’s departure was not due to his political views. We’re grateful for Palmer’s contributions to Oculus, and we’re glad he continues to actively support the VR industry.”

Facebook’s vice president of VR/AR Andrew “Boz” Bosworth echoed that statement, tweeting that Luckey’s departure had “nothing to do” with his politics.

We always made it clear that any mention of politics was up to Palmer. We did not pressure him to say something untrue. Leaked information is inherently one-sided and rarely paints the full picture of what’s going on as it comes from someone with an agenda.

— Boz (@boztank) November 11, 2018

I want to note that WSJ did give us a chance to correct but as we don’t comment on personnel issues we were limited in what we could respond, though we did provide them with the perspective I have shared here.

— Boz (@boztank) November 12, 2018

Also critical of the WSJ report was NBC reporter Ben Collins, who, alongside reporter Gideon Resnick, originally covered Luckey’s donation to Nimble America for The Daily Beast. In a tweet, Collins said the notion of Luckey being fired due to his conservative politics “seems kind of nuts.”

Collins added that before he had admitted to the donation, Luckey had lied to Facebook about his support for the trolling group, which he did so under a secret pseudonym called “NimbleRichMan.” Luckey had confirmed this to Resnick via email.

The conceit of this piece is that “Palmer Luckey was fired for being a conservative,” and that seems kind of nuts.

Luckey secretly aligned himself with moderators of r/The_Donald, where moderators once had to answer if 9/11 is an inside job to become one.https://t.co/OsXFFfjXHn

— Ben Collins (@oneunderscore__) November 11, 2018

There will likely be some conservative backlash to this WSJ story about how he was “FIRED 4 TRUTH,” or whatever, but Luckey donated to a message board built on overt racism, transphobia, and misogyny.

r/The_Donald before 2016’s election made InfoWars look like Walter Cronkite.

— Ben Collins (@oneunderscore__) November 11, 2018

As the WSJ story notes, Luckey then lied internally to Facebook’s comms team and in public statements about it.

Facebook comms knows this, because I repeatedly emailed them, asking why an executive was lying about factual reporting in public statements. They never responded.

— Ben Collins (@oneunderscore__) November 11, 2018

Facebook has been contacted for comment.

The Los Angeles Lakers are finding their groove, coming through Sunday with a 107-106 win over the Atlanta Hawks

LeBron James missed two clutch free throws but scored the go-ahead basket with 15.3 seconds remaining to lead the Lakers (7-6) to the home win at Staples Center.

James finished with 26 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the team’s fifth victory in the last six games after a 2-5 start.

Young had 20 points and 12 assists as the Hawks (3-10) suffered their eighth loss in the last nine games.

Lonzo Ball Doesn’t Need to Score to Be Vital Part of Lakers

Although he only took five shots all game, Lonzo Ball had his best performance of the season against the Hawks.

The second-year player was efficient with his scoring (eight points on five field-goal attempts), but more importantly he found ways to contribute when he wasn’t putting the ball in the basket himself.

Ball set a season high with 11 assists, several of them being highlight-reel-level dimes:

The point guard has been conservative with the ball this season, ranking 10th on the team with 15.5 percent usage rate coming into the day, per Basketball Reference. He needs to play a bigger role on the offensive end, and as he showed Sunday, that doesn’t always mean shooting the ball.

If Ball can run the offense efficiently, it can take a lot of pressure off James and help the offense flow better. There are enough shooters and scorers elsewhere on the roster that he doesn’t need to force shots.

Meanwhile, the guard was also impressive on the other end, playing strong on-ball defense and tallying six rebounds, one block and one steal.

Laker Film Room @LakerFilmRoom

Lonzo’s hoopin on both ends

Even when his shot isn’t falling, these are all areas in which he can help the team every night.

Ball filled up the stat sheet last season (10.2 PPG, 7.2 APG, 6.9 RPG) but didn’t get much credit because he was shooting poorly and did it for a losing team. With more talent around him, he can be exactly what’s needed this year for the Lakers.

Trae Young Flashes Greatness With Eye-Popping 4th Quarter

The Hawks drafted Trae Young to be the next Stephen Curry, and for a few minutes Sunday, he looked just like the two-time MVP.

Young entered the fourth quarter with a respectable nine points and seven assists with the Hawks trailing by nine points, but he turned the game around with an incredible showing in the final period.

The guard knocked down a few Curry-esque three-pointers from way beyond the arc:

  1. D-Rose Turned Back the Clock and Put Up 50

  2. Dubs Trolled Fergie So Hard It Became a Challenge

  3. CP3-Rondo Blowup Was a Long Time Coming

  4. NBA Let Players Know They Have to Cover Branded Tattoos

  5. The NBA Is Back and the Soccer World Is Pumped

  6. Boban Is Back to Break It Down for Another Season

As hot as he was as a shooter, he didn’t force anything and found others when they were open. This showed phenomenal patience for such a young player.

All of this led to a 11-point, five-assist fourth quarter that helped the Hawks almost pull off the upset.

Jason Patt @Bulls_Jay

Trae is making mincemeat of the Lakers’ defense in this 4th quarter.

Dan Wolken @DanWolken

Trae Young is having a phenomenal fourth quarter in LA. Spellbinding.

Young entered the day in the midst of a mini-slump, going just 1-of-17 from beyond the arc over the past three games. He responded by playing conservative for much of Sunday’s game before getting hot late and taking advantage.

Although he needs to be more consistent, the guard has shown flashes of brilliance over the past month that give the Hawks plenty of hope for the future. Few of these flashes have been brighter than ones during the fourth quarter against the Lakers.

What’s Next?

The Lakers will host the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday, while the Hawks will continue their road trip Tuesday with a challenging game against the Golden State Warriors.

Wildfires deadliest on record in California with 31 killed

The death toll from wildfires raging in California rose to 31 after six more people were found killed in what is poised to become the deadliest wildfire in state history.

Officials said the bodies of five people were found in their burned-out homes and the sixth was found in a vehicle in northern California’s Camp Fire, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told reporters on Sunday evening.

More than 200 people are still unaccounted for, Honea said.

The devastation was so complete in some neighborhoods that “it’s very difficult to determine whether or not there may be human remains there”, he said.

The so-called Camp Fire in the northern part of the state has claimed at least 29 lives since it broke out on Thursday. Hundreds of kilometres to the south at least two people died in the Woolsey conflagration threatening the wealthy beach community of Malibu, near Los Angeles.

Looting was reported in the southern fire area and arrests were made, police reported.

California wildfires: Death toll rises as blazes continue

Exponential spread

Hot dry winds expected to blow until Tuesday whipped up the flames and heightened the urgency of evacuation orders, officials said.

“We are entering a new normal. The rate of spread is exponentially more than it used to be,” said Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen, noting at a news conference that California’s fires in 2018 grow far more quickly than they did even 10 years ago.

Several officials urged residents to heed evacuation orders.

Sol Bechtold drove from shelter to shelter looking for his mother, Joanne Caddy, a 75-year-old widow whose house burned down along with the rest of her neighborhood in Magalia, just north of Paradise. She lived alone and did not drive.

“I’m also under a dark emotional cloud. Your mother’s somewhere and you don’t know where she’s at. You don’t know if she’s safe,” he said.

‘Get smart’

With proper Forest Management, we can stop the devastation constantly going on in California. Get Smart!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 11, 2018

The Camp Fire burned down more than 6,700 homes and businesses in Paradise, more structures than any other California wildfire on record, and the death toll, which could rise, also makes it one of the deadliest.

Its death toll now equals that of the Griffith Park Fire in 1933, the deadliest wildfire on record in California.

President Donald Trump, on a trip to France, said in a Twitter post early Sunday, “With proper Forest Management, we can stop the devastation constantly going on in California. Get Smart!”

The Republican president has previously blamed California officials for fires and threatened to withhold funding, saying the state should do more to remove rotten trees and other debris that fuel blazes.

State officials have blamed climate change and said many of the burn areas have been in federally managed lands.

Ennio Morricone denies talking trash about Quentin Tarantino in ‘Playboy’

Frens: Quentin Tarantino and Ennio Morricone hang out at the premiere of ‘The Hateful Eight’ in Rome in 2016

In another instance of a Hollywood figure finding words they apparently never said printed in a feature, iconic Italian composer Ennio Morricone has denied talking trash about director Quentin Tarantino in an interview.

The lauded Hollywood composer has issued a statement to The Hollywood Reporter denying that he gave the interview to the German edition of Playboy, and that he harshly criticised The Hateful Eight director in said interview.

SEE ALSO: Supremely weird ‘interview’ with Drew Barrymore goes viral for all the wrong reasons

The Playboy feature has Morricone not only dismissing events like the Oscars, but calling Tarantino names and accusing the director of borrowing ideas.

The 90-year-old composer, who has worked with Tarantino during his career, recently writing the Oscar-winning film score for The Hateful Eight, says the interview is entirely fabricated.

“I have never expressed any negative statements about the Academy, Quentin, or his films — and certainly do not consider his films garbage,” reads the statement published by THR.

“I consider Tarantino a great director. I am very fond of my collaboration with him and the relationship we have developed during the time we have spent together,” he added. “I credit our collaboration responsible for getting me an Oscar, which is for sure one of the greatest acknowledgments of my career.”

Here’s the full statement:

It has come to my attention that Playboy Germany has come out with an article in which I have stated extremely negative comments about Tarantino and his films, and the Academy. I have never expressed any negative statements about the Academy, Quentin, or his films — and certainly do not consider his films garbage. I have given a mandate to my lawyer in Italy to take civil and penal action.

I consider Tarantino a great director. I am very fond of my collaboration with him and the relationship we have developed during the time we have spent together. He is courageous and has an enormous personality. I credit our collaboration responsible for getting me an Oscar, which is for sure one of the greatest acknowledgments of my career, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity to compose music for his film.

In London, during a press conference in front of Tarantino, I clearly stated that I consider Quentin one of the greatest directors of this time, and I would never speak poorly of the Academy — an important institution that has given to me two of the most important acknowledgments of my career.

As detailed in Morricone’s statement, the composer is looking into taking legal action on the matter.

Mashable has reached out to Playboy for comment.

Xavier Su’a-Filo will start at left guard with Connor Williams out following knee surgery earlier in the week. The Cowboys went with Su’a-Filo over Adam Redmond mostly because of experience. He started 43 games in four years with the Houston Texans. https://t.co/tHtvSwDpe8
