Sudan braces for ‘millions march’ as defiant protesters regroup

Across Sudan, defiant protesters are preparing to return to the streets on Sunday for what social media users are calling a “millions march”.

The protesters are demanding power be handed over to a civilian-led government and justice for all lives lost at the hands of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) during a recent crackdown in the wake of President’s Omar al-Bashir’s removal from power.

The Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) on Twitter called on people to take to the streets on Sunday, saying “let’s be loud on the streets again, and let’s make the demonstrations on June 30th a prominent new page in the last chapter of the falling regime and its rigged council’s drama”.

The rally will be the first mass demonstration since the assault on protesters at a sit-in at the military headquarters in Khartoum almost a month ago.

Months of protests and the sit-in came to a deadly head on June 3, as Sudanese security forces violently dispersed the crowds outside the military headquarters in the capital.

More than 100 people have been killed and more than 500 wounded, according to the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors (CCSD), while a health ministry official cited a much lower toll of 61 victims.

Protesters say the sit-in provided a safe space for people from all regions of Sudan to express themselves through different methods, including discussions, collective chants and art.

After what protesters are calling the “June 3rd massacre”, a sense of mourning and anger further fuelled their demands.

Ahmed Hadra, a protester who was jailed when the demonstrations began in December 2018, says “people are expecting the security forces to respond with violence but there’s no longer any fear and they’re prepared to walk towards any fire”.

He says support from all generations is critical to the youth-led movement.

Ahmed H Adam, a researcher at SOAS’ School of Law, says Sunday’s demonstration will be “a milestone and a buildup to restoring the momentum of the revolution”.

Sudan’s military rejects Ethiopia’s transition proposal

The date of the “millions march”, coincides with the 30th anniversary of the 1989 coup by al-Bashir, who was himself overthrown in a military coup in April.

“The current coup is the continuation of the same one that happened 30 years ago. These people are not different at all. Their policies, their practices, the way they deal with civilians is the same. Their abuse of human rights, denial of democratic transformation of the country – it’s no different at all. It’s just like al-Bashir is in action right now,” says Adam.

Since the violent dispersal of the sit-in, the internet has been cut off, and restoring internet access is now among the top priorities for protesters.

Social media has played a key role in planning previous protests.

Despite the lack of internet access, Afra Ali, a university student and protester in Khartoum tells Al Jazeera that “information about the protest is being spread through brochures handed out by the youth”.

She says there are also murals and graffiti painted throughout the city encouraging people to participate in the “millions march”.

Global movement

The internet blackout led to the diaspora launching social media campaigns under hashtags such as #BlueForSudan and #IAmTheSudanRevolution to inform the international community on what is happening in their homeland.

Sudan protesters accept Ethiopia plan for political transition

Protests are also planned in major cities such as Washington DC, London, Dublin, Kuala Lumpur and more, to stand in solidarity with protesters in Sudan.

Ehab Eltayeb, an activist and organiser based in Houston, Texas says, “the protests outside of Sudan serve three main purposes; raising awareness, lobbying and releasing negative energy in a productive form”.

He also tells Al Jazeera “not being in Sudan at times like this make the youth of the diaspora feel helpless, protests outside of Sudan gives them hope and a feeling of belonging and as they fight a different fight on the outside; this is their revolution too”.

What will happen next?

After negotiations between the Declaration of Freedom and Change Forces (DFCF), a coalition of protest leaders, and the Transitional Military Council (TMC) over the formation of a transitional government reached deadlock, Ethiopia intervened to mediate.

The TMC rejected Ethiopia’s effort to solve the crisis, saying Ethiopia needed to unify its proposal with an earlier option offered by the African Union (AU).

Protesters are condemning Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for backing the TMC. Adam says international powers could potentially influence the ruling generals.

“If it is harmonised, sustained and focused, I think foreign pressure from the main regional powers which are sponsoring right now and supporting the TMC, I think it could work.”

Protesters, however, say no matter the consequence, they will continue to fight for democracy.

Discussing the potential outcomes, Adam says there are only two scenarios: “There will either be chaos and total war or a clear democratic transformation for the country because Sudandse will never accept to be ruled by another dictatorship.”

Sea-Watch enters Lampedusa, captain Carola Rackete arrested

A German charity rescue ship with 40 migrants on board defied authorities and docked in the port of the Italian island of Lampedusa early Saturday, after it was at sea for more than two weeks.

Italian news agency ANSA reported that an Italian customs police boat attempted to prevent the Sea-Watch 3 charity ship from docking on multiple occasions, but had to get out of the way in order to not be trapped against a wharf.

Sea-Watch spokesman Ruben Neugebauer told AFP the ship’s German captain Carola Rackete, 31, was arrested.

The 40 migrants disembarked soon after the vessel docked, one kissing the ground, others hugging ship crew members before boarding a bus.

Rackete was cuffed by police for refusing to obey a military vessel, after manoeuvring the ship into port without permission, a crime punishable by between three and 10 years in jail.

While five European countries on Friday agreed to take in the migrants, permission for the Dutch-flagged Sea-Watch 3 to enter port and disembark the migrants did not come.

‘Proud of our captain’

Rackete called the situation “incredibly tense” on Friday saying the migrants were finding the uncertainty “difficult … psychologically”.

Matteo Salvini, Italy’s interior minister and head of the right-wing League party, had previously said he would only allow Rackete to dock when other EU states agree to immediately take the migrants.

Even then, Italian authorities would seize the ship and prosecute its captain for assisting people-smugglers, he said.

Premier Giuseppe Conte told reporters at the G20 summit in Osaka on Friday three or four European countries were willing to take part in the redistribution of the migrants.

In the meantime, prosecutors in Sicily launched a probe into Rackete on suspicion of aiding “illegal immigration”.

“Even though in the afternoon the prosecution has opened an investigation against me, at the same time they notified us that they will not help to bring the rescued off the ship,” Rackete said in a video statement on Twitter.

“I have decided to enter the harbour, which is free at night, on my own,” she added.

‘No one listened’

Rackete had previously warned she was worried that those rescued off crisis-hit Libya might hurt themselves if the standoff continued.

The ship and its captain were met by applause from a group of supporters standing on the pier on Lampedusa.

🔴 Basta! In this moment the #SeaWatch3 is entering #Lampedusa harbour.

It’s been almost 60h since we declared a state of emergency. No one listened. No one took responsibility. Once more it’s up to us, to Cpt. #CarolaRackete and her crew, to bringing the 40 people to safety. pic.twitter.com/rcxnMst4fO

With Italy restricting port entry, the Dutch-flagged vessel had been stuck in the Mediterranean, during a heatwave, after rescuing 53 migrants drifting in an inflatable raft off the coast of Libya on June 12.

Since then, 13 migrants had been evacuated and brought to Lampedusa on medical or humanitarian grounds, in three separate operations, but Salvini insisted the rest were unwelcome.

Five Italian left-wing MPs spent Friday night on board the Sea-Watch 3 in a gesture of solidarity.

“We’ll remain on board until all of the migrants have disembarked,” said Graziano Delrio, who was the minister in charge of the Italian coastguard between 2015 and 2018.

The young, dreadlocked captain Rackete has become a symbol of defiance and a left-wing hero in Italy for challenging Salvini’s “closed-ports” policy.

“We are proud of our captain, she did exactly the right thing. She upheld the law of the sea and brought people to safety,”Johannes Bayer, chairman of the German charity Sea-Watch, said on Twitter.

Meanwhile Salvini announced on Saturday that the captain was arrested, that the “pirate ship” was seized, and that a “maximum fine” will be implemented to the NGO.

He also said that all migrants were sent to other European countries.

The ship left the port after the migrants disembarked.

Maxi multa alla ONG straniera.

Immigrati tutti distribuiti in altri Paesi europei.

Salvini has seen his popularity inch steadily upwards on his hardline anti-immigrant platform.

Saving lives

Despite government efforts, migrants are continuing to arrive in Italy, even if not in the same numbers as during the period between 2014 and 2017.

Nearly 500 migrants have landed on the country’s coast over the past 16 days, according to the Italian interior ministry.

Meanwhile, the founder of Spanish migrant rescue charity Proactiva Open Arms said he was prepared to risk prison in order to save lives in the Mediterranean, following Rackete’s example.

“If I have to pay the price through prison time or a fine in order to save the lives of some people, then I will do so,” the group’s founder Oscar Camps told AFP by telephone.

The Open Arms ship took to the waters off the Libyan coast on Thursday, a decision which could cost it a fine of up to 900,000 euros ( $1.02m) from the Spanish government, Camps said.

“At the moment there is no organisation out there (off the Libyan coast),” said Camps.

Trump announces negotiations with China are ‘back on track’

Donald Trump and Xi Jinping

OSAKA, Japan — President Donald Trump said negotiations with China are “right back on track” after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday in Japan.

“We had a really good meeting,” Trump told reporters before talks with the Turkish president. “Perhaps better than expected.”

Story Continued Below

The president did not specify whether he would pause his plan to impose additional tariffs on China, but Chinese state-run television was reporting that the U.S. would not impose any new duties on Chinese goods.

The two sides will pick up where talks left off in early May, when Trump accused China of backtracking on commitments it had made after months of talks.

Despite the friendly tone this weekend, the business sector — and the U.S. economy — is likely to still be on edge as tensions between Beijing and Washington can escalate in an instant if talks break down.

It remains unclear whether Trump will put a deadline for talks to wrap up. Last year, the president had set a 90-day deadline for China to meet a set of U.S. conditions to avoid additional U.S. tariffs, although that date was ultimately delayed. Ahead of the meeting, two sources had suggested a deadline of six months.

It is likely that both U.S. and Chinese officials are feeling pressure to resolve their ongoing differences soon. Any tariff increase on the remaining $300 billion in Chinese imports is expected to hit the pocketbooks of millions of consumers, especially lower-income voters who rely on cheap imports, going into the 2020 election.

And the trade war could slash one percentage point off China’s economic growth this year, a top Chinese party official had estimated in May.

U.S. officials said that a trade deal was “90 percent” completed in early May before Trump accused China of reneging on promises it made over months of talks.

The U.S. is pushing for structural changes to the Chinese economy on issues such as the transfer of proprietary technologies from U.S. companies doing business in China. A more challenging issue will be changing government subsidies and other advantages that Chinese companies and state-owned enterprises enjoy.

Ex-Pacers PG Darren Collison Announces Retirement from NBA After 10 Seasons

Indiana Pacers point guard Darren Collison announced his retirement Friday after 10 NBA seasons that also included stops with the New Orleans Hornets, Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Clippers and Sacramento Kings.

Collison, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent Sunday, confirmed the news to The Undefeated:

“Basketball has been my life since I was a child. I could never imagine finding anything that brings me more joy than I get from playing the game. While I still love basketball, I know there is something more important which is my family and my faith. I am one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and my faith means everything to me. I receive so much joy from volunteering to help others and participate in a worldwide ministry. The joy I feel is unmatched.

“With that being said, I have decided to retire from the NBA.”

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported Collison was expected to get between $10 and $12 million per year on the free-agent market.

New Orleans selected Collison out of UCLA with the 21st overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft.

The California native was named to the All-Rookie First Team but was still traded to the Pacers after just one NBA season.

He became a reliable journeyman guard who never spent more than three consecutive years with any team. He returned to Indiana as a free agent in 2017 and proceeded to spend the final two seasons of his career with the franchise.

Now 31, Collison averaged 12.5 points, 5.0 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals while shooting 47.1 percent from the field, including 39.4 percent from beyond the arc, in 708 regular-season appearances. He also played 40 playoff games.

His announcement mentioned a handful of players who took on a key role in his career:

“Players such as Victor Oladipo, Russell Westbrook, DeMarcus Cousins, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Chris Paul, Stephen Curry, Dwyane Wade, and LeBron James who had a major impact on me competing at the highest level. I either have a close relationship with those that I have mentioned or they inspired me to work harder. Obviously, I never have had the accolades they have. But they gave me a benchmark to work toward, and I’m truly thankful to them for that.”

Collison’s last NBA game was a good one: 19 points in the postseason against the Boston Celtics, but it wasn’t enough to help the Pacers stave off elimination.

Kevin Durant Rumors: Free Agent Engaging Warriors, Knicks, Clippers, Nets

Kevin Durant is reportedly expected to engage four teams when free agency opens.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, KD intends to speak with the Golden State Warriors, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks.

Wojnarowski reported Wednesday that Durant declined his $31.5 million player option for 2019-20 to become an unrestricted free agent.

Wojnarowski added Durant’s decision-making process in free agency “could extend well into next week.”

Durant’s reported list of suitors comes as little surprise since he has been linked to the Warriors, Nets, Clippers and Knicks in recent weeks.

The team that signs KD must deal with the reality he could miss the entire 2019-20 season. Durant suffered a torn Achilles in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, which may force him to rehab for a whole year before returning to the court.

It was speculated throughout the 2018-19 season that Durant was preparing to leave in free agency, but it isn’t necessarily a foregone conclusion. Sam Amick of The Athletic reported Thursday that Golden State has “expressed some recent optimism privately” that it can re-sign Durant.

That is primarily due to the fact that the Warriors are the only team capable of offering KD a five-year, $221 million max extension.

If the Warriors cannot re-sign Durant, they may try to use the allure of a five-year max extension to convince the two-time NBA Finals MVP to agree to a sign-and-trade. NBA insider Brian Windhorst appeared Thursday on ESPN’s Get Up and said the Dubs are open to a sign-and-trade.

Windhorst noted it would be a good move for Golden State since the trade would land it a $35 million exception that could be used to acquire other players.

Klay Thompson is a free agent, and he could also miss all of 2019-20 after suffering a torn ACL in Game 6 of the NBA Finals. Even if the Warriors re-sign Thompson, they will need more capable bodies to put around Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala.

Assuming Durant doesn’t re-sign, trading him would be the best way for Golden State to make room for other players since it won’t have cap space otherwise.

The team that lands Durant will primarily be looking ahead to the 2020-21 season, but signing him could be a franchise-altering move for the Nets, Clippers or Knicks since it would likely aid significantly in attracting another max free agent to play alongside him, such as Kyrie Irving or Kawhi Leonard.

Trump offers to meet Kim Jong Un at Korean border

Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump

foreign policy

Trump tweeted out the invitation, telling reporters he had ‘just thought’ of extending the invitation ‘this morning.’

OSAKA, Japan — President Donald Trump on Friday tweeted an offer to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea.

“After some very important meetings, including my meeting with President Xi of China, I will be leaving Japan for South Korea (with President Moon). While there, if Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!” Trump wrote Saturday morning local time.

Story Continued Below

Trump was scheduled to spend Saturday and Sunday in South Korea, meeting with its president Moon Jae-in. The South China Morning Post previously reported that Trump was considering a trip to the heavily fortified border, but a summit with the North Korean leader was not publicly in the works. Trump planned to visit the DMZ during a 2017 trip to South Korea, but canceled at the last moment due to weather.

Minutes after sending the tweet, Trump told reporters that he had “just thought” of extending the invitation “this morning.”

But the president had apparently told The Hill on Monday that he “might” want to meet Kim at the DMZ, a fact the White House asked the publication to withhold out of security concerns.

Trump made his interest public Saturday morning in Japan with his tweet, which also publicly revealed for the first time his plans to visit the DMZ on Sunday.

“We’ll be there and I just put out a feeler,” Trump told reporters ahead of a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the G-20 summit of the world’s largest economies. “I don’t know where [Kim] is right now, he may not be in North Korea.”

“I’m in no rush whatsoever ever,” Trump added. “I will be in South Korea, I let him know.”

Trump last met Kim in Vietnam in February, attempting to build off of their prior summit in Singapore the summer before. Though their first encounter in Singapore was a watershed gesture of goodwill between the two hostile countries, the follow up in Vietnam failed to deliver substantive policy breakthroughs.

Still, Trump, the first sitting U.S. president to meet a head of the three-generation Kim dynasty, argued on Saturday that he had made significant progress with North Korea.

“Frankly, if I didn’t become president, you’d be in a way right now with North Korea,” he said. “We’d be having a war right now with North Korea. And by the way, that’s a certainty, that’s not a maybe.”

But while North Korea has ceased its nuclear missile testing since beginning discussions with the Trump administration, analysts say the Kim regime has maintained secret nuclear facilities. And recently, Pyongyang restarted missile tests that Trump’s top aides said violated United Nations resolutions.

Trump has refused to concede any step-backs in his overtures to North Korea, expressing confidence that his personal relationship with Kim is what matters. The president has professed falling “in love” with Kim, and recently both have spoken glowingly of private letters exchanged between them.

“We seem to get along very well,” Trump told reporters on Friday. “That’s a good thing, not a bad thing.”

Biden tries to stanch the bleeding with full Obama embrace

poster=”https://ift.tt/2xpKCUB;

true

2020 democratic debates

The Rev. Jesse Jackson offered advice to the former vice president on how to repair the damage from the his debate performance.

CHICAGO — When Joe Biden spoke to a mostly African American audience here Thursday, he was a different person than presidential candidate who was thrashed over the issue of segregation at a nationally televised debate the night before.

This time, Biden was fiery, concise and clear as he ticked off his work with hometown hero Barack Obama and defended his civil rights record, which came into question after his high-profile clash with Kamala Harris, the only black woman in the Democratic primary. In a more controlled environment, with the help of teleprompters, Biden laid out his record on civil rights in a way that didn’t resonate the night before.

Story Continued Below

“Before I start, I’d like to say something about the debate we had last night. And I heard and I listened to and I respect senator Harris. We all know that 30 seconds to 60 seconds on a campaign debate exchange can’t do justice to a lifetime commitment to civil rights,” Biden said. “I want to be clear about my record and position. On racial justice, including busing — I never, never, never ever opposed voluntary busing as a program that senator Harris participated in.”

Biden’s mentioning of Harris’s name and his insistence that he respects her reflected the toll of the damage she inflicted on him. Normally Biden doesn’t mention his rivals, a luxury of being the frontrunner.

Still, the already planned appearance before the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow Push Coalition allowed Biden the fortune of offering rehabilitating remarks on race in front of a crowd most attuned to the issue. Jackson said that during a private meeting with Biden ahead of the remarks, he told the former vice president what he needed to do.

“What I said to him in our meeting was that people who were proud of the relationship with Barack and all of that — what came out last night is he’s been on the side of state’s rights. Doesn’t make him a bad guy but we’re on different teams,” Jackson said of his discussion with Biden. “What we fought for was against state’s rights. I said: ‘You must be very clear, just like you made an adjustment on the Hyde amendment, very clear. So he’s very clear on his work with Barack.”

Biden did as much in his address.

“These rights are not up to the states to decide, they’re our federal government’s duty,” Biden told the crowd. “There’s a constitutional question to protect the civil rights of every single American. And that’s always been my position. And so that’s why I ran for federal office in the first place.”

Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.), who hasn’t endorsed a Democratic candidate but attended Biden’s address, defended the former vice president. When asked if he needed to be more contrite about his past positions, Kelly disagreed.

“I actually think he needs to be him,” Kelly said when asked if Biden should be more contrite. “Then people will see that’s the Biden they know.”

The confrontation with Harris, she added in response to a question, “was not a death blow.”

Not everyone was impressed by Biden’s attempt at damage control. Leaving the event on Thursday, Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) said Biden missed his opportunity. The former vice president, Rush said, “was using the Obama years as red meat” in his remarks and didn’t shift his position enough — or apologize for his remarks about working collegially with segregationist senators — to make a mark before prospective black voters.

“I think he thought about what he didn’t say last night and tried to make up for it. To me, he didn’t move the needle at all,” Rush said. “Today fell short. He could have had a standing ovation. Instead he had scant applause.”

Rush said Biden’s debate performance raised doubts about whether the former vice president can go up against and beat Donald Trump.

“The question seared in my mind is, ‘Can he do it?’” Rush said. “I’m convinced Kamala can do it. I’m not certain that Biden can do it.”

One Biden surrogate fretted that the candidate looked and sounded too aged at the debate.

“It looked like a 76-year-old man up there,” the person said. “I hope it’s a one-off. But there’s a fear it isn’t.”

In a sign of the importance of the issue to Biden, his campaign blasted out an email with quoting from his Thursday speech, using a respectful tone toward Harris and words that many of his advisers wished he would have said onstage.

The statement also was more forward looking than Biden was in the debate.

“The discussion in this race today shouldn’t be about the past,” the email said. “It should be about how we can do better and move forward and give every kid in this country an opportunity to succeed. That means good schools in every neighborhood. No child’s future should be determined by their zip code.”

Marc Caputo contributed to this report.

D’Angelo Russell Reportedly Receives Qualifying Offer from Nets, Will Be RFA

Chris Szagola/Associated Press

The Brooklyn Nets reportedly extended guard D’Angelo Russell a qualifying offer Friday, meaning he is now a restricted free agent, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.

Brooklyn has been heavily linked to guard Kyrie Irving in free agency, which could lead to Russell’s departure, but the Nets now have the right to match any offer sheet Russell might sign with another team.

The 23-year-old Russell is coming off his best NBA season to date, as he was named an All-Star for the first time in 2018-19.

Qualifying Russell gives the Nets options. If Brooklyn is able to sign Irving and/or Kevin Durant in free agency, the organization has the right to rescind the qualifying offer through July 13 to make Russell an unrestricted free agent, per Keith Smith of Yahoo Sports.

Charania reported last week the Nets are viewed as the favorites to sign Irving since it seems likely that he will leave the Boston Celtics.

It is difficult to envision the Nets will both sign Irving and re-sign Russell since they have similar skill sets and may not be able to coexist. Because of that, Russell’s fate may relate directly to Irving’s free-agency decision.

Russell, selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft, finally started to realize his massive potential last season. He averaged 21.1 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game while leading the Nets to a 42-40 record and a playoff berth.

If Russell becomes available, a return to the Lakers could be in the cards. Charania reported the team has “serious interest” in bringing him back.

L.A. has built a potential championship contender by acquiring Anthony Davis to play alongside LeBron James and Kyle Kuzma. General manager Rob Pelinka also opened up enough salary-cap space to sign another max player, which means the team has room to bring in Russell if the Nets move on.

Russell’s future is up in the air, but the fact that Brooklyn qualified him means there is still a chance he will be back with the Nets next season.

Defending champions the United States have reached the semi-finals of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, beating hosts France 2-1 on Friday.

Megan Rapinoe scored twice before Wendie Renard got one back for Les Bleues as the U.S. advanced to a last-four tie against England.

France conceded an opening goal on home soil for the first time in 2019 when Rapinoe arrowed a free-kick past Sarah Bouhaddi in the fifth minute.

While it was a fine strike, Bouhaddi might have got across to it quicker:

The U.S. were causing plenty of problems early on by going direct. Rapinoe and the rest were taking on shots whenever they found space in and around the box, while the pace of Alex Morgan had Renard and the France defence on their heels.

French nerves soon settled, though, once the U.S. failed to add to their lead. The majority of the opening half saw Les Bleues do the running, promoting a stubborn rearguard action from the visitors.

In particular, full-back Crystal Dunn was in exceptional form to subdue Kadidiatou Diani. The lively winger had been France’s biggest threat at these finals, but Dunn was tracking her movement well and not falling for any of her tricks.

45 mins to go! Curious if France move Diani centrally or swap wings bc @crysdunn_19 has been very good this first half! 👏🏾👏🏾lets gooooooo! @USWNT

France had been stunned by a quick goal in the opening half and nearly fell victim to the same thing as the sound of the whistle that signalled the restart still echoed in the air:

Sam Mewis’ involvement in the move summed up her industry and ingenuity throughout the game. The 26-year-old was the driving force for her team, knitting together the midfield and forward lines with breaks from deep.

France needed to show similar endeavour, and it was Amandine Henry who showed more than most. She began to roam beyond midfield and proved her threat with shots from the edge of the area.

Henry needed more help from those ahead of her, but with Diani still struggling, Eugenie Le Sommer shot into the side netting on the turn.

Despite the miss, France were piling on the pressure and making the U.S. look uncharacteristically shaky. It was against the run of play then when Rapinoe made it 2-0 on 65 minutes, finishing well after being found by a smart pull-back from the impressive Tobin Heath.

Even after seeing the deficit doubled, Les Bleues didn’t give up hope. A necessary change saw Delphine Cascarino come off the bench to try her luck against Dunn, and the Lyon forward immediately started finding some joy.

Cascarino helped France keep the pressure on, and the reward came when Renard made amends for more than a few defensive lapses by heading in from a free-kick.

France thought they were owed a penalty soon after when Kelley O’Hara appeared to block an Amel Majri cross with her hand. Nothing was given despite furious appeals from the home side.

Ultimately, the U.S. had taught France a painful lesson in the value of clinical efficiency in front of goal.

Klay Thompson Rumors: Warriors to Offer Max Contract at Start of Free Agency

The Golden State Warriors are planning to offer Klay Thompson a five-year, $190 million max contract when free agency opens on Sunday at 6 p.m. ET, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

According to the Los Angeles Times‘ Brad Turner, Thompson intended to meet with both the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers if the Warriors did not make a max offer. Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported Wednesday, though, that a “quick agreement” was expected to be reached should the full max be put on the table.

The 11th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft, Thompson has spent his entire eight-year career with Golden State and has been one of the keys to the franchise’s historic run. He has made 200-plus three-pointers in seven consecutive seasons, providing a nice complement to two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry.

Thompson is coming off a season in which he averaged 21.5 points per game, overcoming a slow start to finish the year at 46.7 percent from the field and 40.2 percent from three-point range.

With Kevin Durant injured, Thompson stepped up in a big way to try to help the Warriors win their fourth title in five seasons. He averaged 26.0 points on 55.3 percent shooting, including 59.4 percent from beyond the arc, during the 2019 NBA Finals despite battling a hamstring injury.

As he looked to bring Golden State all the way back from a 3-1 series deficit, though, he was forced to leave Game 6 due to a torn ACL. The Warriors’ bid for a three-peat came to an end as they lost Game 6 following Thompson’s departure.

It marked the first major injury of Thompson’s professional career, as he has never missed more than nine regular-season games. But even as he is expected to miss most of the 2019-20 campaign, the team appears willing to take care of the five-time All-Star.

Although Durant has not given any indication as to what he will do in free agency this summer, Thompson’s camp has made no secret about his desire to remain in the Bay Area. Thompson himself told Mark Medina of the Bay Area News Group in February 2018 that he wants to be a Warrior for life.

Klay’s dad, Mychal Thompson, told Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle earlier this month that there is “no question” his son will re-sign with Golden State, though he previously pointed out on 95.7 The Game that negotiations won’t consist of much because “the money thing is basically set in stone.”

In other words, they expect the max.

Warriors owner Joe Lacob told The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami back in February that “nobody’s going to outspend us.” So if money is the only sticking point during negotiations, a deal figures to get done.
