Nick Foles Won’t Attend Jaguars OTAs for Personal Reasons; No Return Timetable

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles will not attend OTAs due to personal reasons, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic.

Popper added there is no timetable for Foles’ return. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that while Foles could be back by the end of the week, his absence is “open-ended.”

The Jags have OTAs scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, as well as June 3, 4, 6 and 7. Veteran mandatory minicamp will then be held from June 11 to 13.

Per John Oehser of the Jaguars’ official website, head coach Doug Marrone released a statement, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Nick and his family.”

This offseason, Jacksonville signed Foles to a four-year, $88 million contract with a $25 million signing bonus and over $50 million in guaranteed money.

The Jags were in desperate need of a quarterback after Blake Bortles bottomed out in 2018, which resulted in Jacksonville’s plummet from the AFC Championship Game to 5-11 in just one year. Foles was the best free-agent option available. While he primarily served as Carson Wentz’s backup with the Philadelphia Eagles the past two seasons, he performed at a high level when called upon.

During the 2017 season, Foles went 2-1 as a starter during the regular season and led Philly on an improbable playoff run that saw it beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. Foles was named MVP of that game.

Then, Foles went 4-1 as a starter during the 2018 regular season and helped the Eagles sneak into the playoffs. Foles and the Eagles beat the Chicago Bears before they fell to the New Orleans Saints in the divisional round.

The 30-year-old Foles has made 44 regular-season starts in his career with the Eagles, St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs. He owns a 26-18 record and has completed 61.6 percent of his passes for 11,165 yards, 68 touchdowns and 33 interceptions.

Foles—a one-time Pro Bowler—also has six games of starting experience in the playoffs.

In Jacksonville, Foles will look to supplement a dominant defense and a potentially strong running game spearheaded by Leonard Fournette.

He is also reuniting with Jags offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, who was Foles’ quarterback coach in Philadelphia in 2017 when the team won the Super Bowl.

While missing some valuable practice time with his new team could be a negative, the fact that Foles is familiar with DeFilippo’s offense suggests he may not be too far behind by the time he returns.

Dell’s new XPS 13 2-in-1 is fancier than ever

During Computex, when basically every major PC manufacturer is launching new laptops, Dell isn’t one to be left behind.

On Tuesday, the company announced a freshly redesigned Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 laptop, as well as a new version of its Dell XPS 15 laptop.

Dell’s 13-inch laptop/tablet hybrid has several important upgrades over its predecessor, the most important of them being camera placement — instead of being lodged in the device’s “chin” beneath the screen, the camera is now located in the (far more convenient) top bezel.

SEE ALSO: Asus’ new dual-screen laptop is totally bonkers

The XPS 13 2-in-1’s screen hasn’t suffered for this. It’s a 16:10 touchscreen with a 7% larger viewing experience, Dell says, and it can be configured to have up to UHD+ resolution as well as HDR400 certification with Dolby Vision. Other things have been improved as well, including a 19% larger touchpad, and a new hinge design. Still, Dell has managed to make the device 8% thinner than the previous generation.

The new XPS 13 2-in1 comes with Intel’s 10th-generation Core processors. It’s no longer fanless, but overall, it offers 2.5 times more performance than the previous generation (according to Dell), so a little bit of fan noise might be a worthwhile tradeoff.

Generally, it appears that Dell has perfected a machine that was already pretty nice, and while there’s still room for improvement (for example, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, coupled with a headphone jack and a microSD slot, may not be enough for some users), it’s probably going to be among the top choices for a thin, capable laptop/tablet hybrid.

The new Dell XPS 15 isn’t a huge change from the last generation, with nearly identical look, but — very important — its webcam is now also located above the screen.

Dell XPS 15 now also has its camera above the screen.

Inside, the Dell XPS 15 now supports Intel’s 9th-generation processors. It can be configured with up to 64GB of RAM and up to 2TB SSD, as well as up to Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 graphics. And if you need those perfect blacks, you can get the XPS 15 with an OLED screen.

The new Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 will be available in July, while the Dell XPS 15 will arrive “in the coming weeks,” both starting at $999.99.

Former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue has been pursued by the Houston Rockets and the New Orleans Pelicans for a lead assistant role, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium. However, per Charania, Lue’s focus is on returning to the sidelines as a head coach.

Lue was fired by the Cavs in October after an 0-6 start to the 2018-19 campaign.

According to Charania, Houston reached out to Lue not long after his dismissal in Cleveland but has not made an offer recently. He played 21 games for the Rockets in 2004-05.

Lue has some connections to the Pelicans. He worked alongside New Orleans head coach Alvin Gentry on Doc Rivers’ coaching staff with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2013-14. Newly hired executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin served as the Cavs’ general manager from 2014 to 2017; Lue became Cleveland’s associate coach in 2014.

Lue went 128-83 in the regular season and 41-20 during the postseason with the Cavaliers from 2016 to 2018 and helped deliver the franchise’s only championship (2016) in the process. He played a key role in helping the team reach four consecutive NBA Finals, with the latter three coming with as the head coach.

The 42-year-old was a candidate for the Los Angeles Lakers’ vacancy earlier this offseason. According to ESPN.com’s Dave McMenamin, Lue withdrew his name from consideration earlier this month as the two sides were not able to reach an agreement on a contract:

Dave McMenamin @mcten

Ty Lue and his reps turned down the Lakers’ offer Tuesday, per league sources. LAL regrouped with an offer in the range of 3 years, $18 million today. Lue’s side pulled out of negotiations. Lue’s camp seeking 5 year deal with salary commensurate with championship resume

Marc Stein of the New York Times added that the Lakers’ desire to shape Lue’s potential coaching staff also led to negotiations stalling:

Marc Stein @TheSteinLine

Among the issues that have led to a breakdown in talks between the Lakers and Ty Lue: League sources say that the Lakers have been trying to impose their choices for assistant coaches on Lue. @espn first reported the impasse between the Lakers are Lue

Los Angeles ultimately hired former Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic coach Frank Vogel.

Serbian troops placed on alert after arrests by Kosovo police

Kosovo police special unit members secure the area near the village of Cabra in northern Kosovo [Visar Kryeziu/AP]
Kosovo police special unit members secure the area near the village of Cabra in northern Kosovo [Visar Kryeziu/AP]

Correction 28/05/2019: A previous version of this article featured an old map that showed Montenegro as part of Serbia. The map has been replaced.

Serbia has ordered its troops to full alert as tensions soar in the Balkans amid reports that heavily armed Kosovo police entered Serb-populated regions of the former Serbian province and made several arrests.

Serbia’s state TV reported shots were heard and tear gas was used as Kosovo’s special police “burst into” a village in northern Kosovo with armoured vehicles early in the morning.

The region bordering Serbia is 90 percent populated by Serbs, who refuse to be part of Kosovo.

Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj confirmed the action, saying on Twitter that an “anti-smuggling and organised crime operation” is under way in northern Kosovo.

President Hashim Thaci called on the ethnic Serb minority to remain calm and support the police, saying the fight against organised crime would speed up the country’s process towards integration with the West.

“Those involved in illegal activities will go behind bars,” he wrote on his Facebook page, adding that the police operation was not targeting ethnicities.

Kosovo authorities said at least two policemen were injured during the action.

Serbian government official Marko Djuric said the Kosovo police action is designed to intimidate and expel Serbs from Kosovo and presents “not only a threat to stability but the most direct threat to peace”.

“If this doesn’t stop immediately, there is no doubt how Serbia will react already during the day,” Djuric warned.

State TV said President Aleksandar Vucic ordered a full state of alert for Serbian troops stationed near the border with Kosovo. It said movements of Serb troops were reported in the area.

Any Serbian armed incursion in Kosovo would mean a direct clash with NATO peacekeepers there.

State TV also reported that a meeting of the country’s top security body is under way following the tensions. The report said Vucic will speak in parliament later on Tuesday about the developments.

Serbia lost control over Kosovo after a NATO intervention in 1999 that stopped a bloody Serb crackdown against Kosovo Albanian separatists and civilians.

Serbia does not recognise Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence.

On Monday, Vucic warned of renewed clashes in Kosovo if a negotiated “compromise” solution for Serbia’s predominantly ethnic Albanian former province is not found soon.

Apple launches new iPod touch with A10 chip, 256GB of storage

Behold, the 2019 iPod touch.
Behold, the 2019 iPod touch.

By Stan Schroeder

Apple hasn’t (completely) forgotten about its iPod touch.

On Tuesday, the company announced a new version of the device, with Apple’s A10 Fusion chip on board, as well as augmented reality (AR) and Group FaceTime support.

With these changes, Apple’s portable music player has gotten a much needed update, its first since July 2015.

SEE ALSO: Apple’s 2019 MacBook Pros have ‘improved’ keyboards that shouldn’t break

Another important change: consumers can now choose an iPod touch with 256GB of storage — quite important for users with large music collections.

Image: Apple

The design of the device appears unchanged from the previous generation, home button, bezels and all. The rest of the specs include a 4-inch Retina display, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.2-megapixel front camera (all the same as in the previous generation of the device).

It’s also worth noting that the iPod touch will support Apple’s game subscription service, Apple Arcade, when it launches this fall.

The new iPod touch with 32GB of storage costs $199. The 128GB version (there’s no 64GB variant) will set you back $299, while the 256GB version costs $399. It’s available in six colors: Space Gray, Gold, Silver, Pink, Blue and (PRODUCT)Red.

To get a better idea of how much value you’re getting for the money, consider the $449 iPhone 7, which has the same A10 Fusion chip and is still being sold by Apple. That phone has a similar design as the iPod touch but a bigger, 4.7-inch screen, far better cameras, a fingerprint sensor (built into the Home button), and water resistance.

The iPod touch is available now from Apple.com and in the Apple Store app in the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the UAE, UK and U.S.

5-Star Duke Target RJ Hampton Forgoes College to Play for New Zealand Breakers

After reclassifying to the 2019 class, 5-star guard RJ Hampton announced Tuesday that he will play professionally in New Zealand next season rather than playing collegiately.

Hampton said on ESPN’s Get Up! that he will play for the New Zealand Breakers of the National Basketball League of Australia.

Hampton believes playing in New Zealand will best prepare him for the NBA:

“My No. 1 goal is to play in the NBA. I wanted to be an NBA player before I ever wanted to be a college player. This is about getting ready for the next level faster and more efficiently. Both of my parents went to college. My mom got her masters degree. Education is a big thing in our family, but this is about focusing 100 percent on basketball. You can always go back to college, but there’s only a short window as an athlete where you can play professional basketball, and I want to take advantage of that. I think that challenging yourself on a daily basis is the best way to improve.”

Matt Walsh, a partial owner of the Breakers, also commented on the signing:

“Signing a player of RJ’s caliber is a monumental undertaking that we don’t take lightly at the Breakers. His family has entrusted us with their son spending one of the most important years in his development in New Zealand, and we are going to do everything we can as an organization to ensure that he reaches his goal of being a high draft pick and prepare him as best as we can to come in ready to make an impact in the NBA.”

Per 247Sports, Hampton is the No. 5 overall player, No. 2 combo guard and No. 1 player from the state of Texas in the 2019 class.

Hampton was considered one of the top players in the 2020 class, and this didn’t change much when he decided to move up a class. He announced his decision to leave high school early in April:

14 @RjHampton14

Best 3 Years of my life, Little Elm will forever and always be home 🖤 Thank You. 14 Signing Out ✍🏾 https://t.co/h0l9ZJ7BVD

According to his father, Rod Hampton, the decision came after he dominated his competition during the spring. He averaged 28.8 points per game in the EYBL while also playing well for USA Basketball.

His father told Evan Daniels of 247Sports:

“Just his play at USA and not from what everyone else said, but it was my feeling as his dad. His play at USA and this weekend [at EYBL], it was stellar. You got bonafide pros in that league. In 24 months, 36 months you have bonafide pros from 2020 to 2022. … He was a shining star. There was nobody that was better than him.”

This type of advanced level of play should allow him to make a quick transition to the professional level even if he is a bit underage. Hampton noted how important it has been to watch Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic thrive in the NBA:

“Luka Doncic is one of my favorite players to watch. I started following him two years before he was drafted and watched at least 10 games of his this season. Seeing how he came into the NBA and being arguably the best rookie in the NBA shows you that you don’t have to go to college to be successful. Playing professionally against men helped him get to where he is now. He’s not the fastest or most athletic guy, but he gets where he wants on the floor and reads defenses better than almost any player in the NBA.”

At 6’5″, Hampton has great size for a guard with the type of elite handle that will allow him to spend most of his time on the ball. Although he could improve at being a true point guard, he does a great job of creating opportunities for himself while getting easy looks at the basket.

Even so, playing against older and more experienced competition overseas will be a major challenge for Hampton as he prepares himself for the NBA.

What Black Widow’s Biggest Fans Want To See In Her Solo Movie

Marvel Studios

With Avengers: Endgame in the rearview mirror, it’s time to contemplate what’s next for some of its biggest stars.

Unfortunately, the final entry in the Infinity Saga forced fans to say goodbye to some of their favorite characters, at least in the films’ current timeline.

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.

Scarlett Johansson’s daring Black Widow was among them, having traded her life for the greater good of the universe. When Black Widow and Hawkeye reach Vormir as part of the movie’s time-traveling narrative in 2014, they’re met with the Red Skull, who tells them that they must make a sacrifice if they want to collect the Soul Stone. You can probably see where things are going from there.

As such, fans have been mourning the loss of Natasha Romanoff ever since the movie’s credits rolled. Thankfully, it’s not the end of her character, at least in terms of seeing her on the big screen. There’s still a solo movie in the cards for Romanoff, which is great news for anyone still bummed by her fate. But when it comes to a solo Black Widow movie, what do some of her biggest fans want to see out of it?

Giphy
  • What do we know so far?

First, let’s recap some important details. The long-delayed Black Widow solo movie will reportedly begin filming in June, though nothing official has been announced just yet. In early April, Stranger Things star David Harbour and The Favourite’s Rachel Weisz were tapped for roles in the upcoming flick, according to theHollywood Reporter. It isn’t clear who either actor is set to play, but we do know they’d be joining Johansson and Lady Macbeth’s Florence Pugh.

What could the movie explore, though? We’re not sure at this point. First of all, it would undoubtedly have to be set in the past, given Black Widow’s ultimate fate. Her death was enough to spark controversy, in fact, as she was the only woman in the Avengers’ original lineup and the only woman superhero in the entirety of the franchise before 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Before that, she was continually underused. Time and time again, she was offered second-tier story lines that her male counterparts didn’t have to worry about.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige first spoke a solo Black Widow movie into existence in 2010, nine years before the first female-led MCU film Captain Marvel arrived in theaters. Needless to say, it’s been a long time coming. But fans are doggedly determined to see her get the moment in the spotlight she so richly deserves, one way or another.

  • Fans want an espionage-focused action film

A spy-focused film with plenty of moments for Black Widow to shine seems to be No. 1 on some diehards’ laundry list of solo movie must-haves, and for good reason. It’s time to see her come into her own, especially after spending so much time as a vehicle for other Avengers’ stories. The character has a rich history, and this seems like the best course of action for the film, which already has a script ready and waiting.

“I would love to see Natasha in her Iron Man 2-era persona, where she’s a total badass, working undercover and infiltrating organizations, spying, being sharp and smart and subversive and strategic with her tactics, and also kicking ass while doing it,” said Arc System Works‘s Karrie Shirou.

“In the recent Avengers movies, the threats have become bigger and badder, and the usefulness of Black Widow — and more physical, human strength-type characters like Hawkeye — have been really diminished in importance,” she continued. “I want to see her doing things that only Black Widow can do, to establish why she was someone the Avengers needed as more than a gopher.”

And then there’s Natasha’s own bloody backstory. “I see an espionage centered prequel that focuses on Black Widow being an assassin, going undercover, and other various aspects of being a spy. Essentially her earning the ‘red in her ledger’ but also the eventual journey away from that life that leads her to being who she was in the start of Iron Man,” said Joshua LeMay, Black Widow fan and host of the A Trouble with Words podcast.

“Fun but dark in tone with plenty of action scenes covering everything from physical combat, gunplay, interrogations and chases. Also, it would be interesting to see how she handles friendships and relationships in general at that time [in her life],” LeMay continued.

Early details about the film indicate that it’ll be an “internationally-set story centering on Natasha Romanoff, a spy and assassin who grew up being trained by the KGB before breaking from their grasp and becoming an agent of SHIELD and an Avenger.” So, the movie will likely end up meeting those fan expectations, at least in this respect.

  • Black Widow fans want her to be in the spotlight

For a Black Widow movie to work, fans point out that she can’t just fade into the background of her own story, which is what’s tended to happen even when she’s played a major role in the Avengers films.

“Black Widow has always kind of faded into the background in the movies. She’s been this sort of ancillary character,” said longtime Black Widow fan Katie Sims. “I want her to have more agency, better lines, snarkier comebacks. I want her to be the center of attention for once. She deserves more.” More screen time is certainly a good thing, given that the plots for each Avengers flick were divided up between so many heroes she barely got any face time.

“She needs to be crux of the movie — not just given another mission by S.H.I.E.L.D. to carry out James Bond-style, where the characters are almost interchangeable,” shared Shirou. “I’d also like to see her free of the trappings of the Avengers — no lingering Hulk romance, or her trying to get back to her friends if it’s a post-Endgame movie.”

It may seem like a no-brainer that Black Widow should be the “star” of her own movie, but it’s not like that concern is completely unearned. The character could still be met with the same pitfalls we saw with Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman, where men still played major roles in women’s stories.

“I’m cautious about how they handle the ‘girl power’ aspect of the movie,” explained Shirou. “Clearly, this is the hot thing in Hollywood right now, but we’ve already seen the stories of women overcoming male oppression with Captain Marvel and naive women learning about the world through a male guide with Wonder Woman. I want to see someone capable, smart on her own accord, and not needing to form a team of women to fight together. I want to see her in full, glorious power in her own right.”

  • Fans want to know more about Black Widow, but not too much

Part of Black Widow’s passionate fanbase is very much interested in learning about the rest of Natasha’s life beyond her time with the Avengers. In offering up this kind of content, a solo film could add an exciting new dimension to the character that’s been sorely needed ever since we had the pleasure of meeting her.

“I’d love to hear the story behind the relationship between Hawkeye and Black Widow, how Nat ended up at S.H.I.E.L.D., and of course, what happened in Budapest. I gotta know about Budapest,” said Marvel fan Kaitlyn Stewart.

The aforementioned “Budapest” refers to a past mission she and Hawkeye reference in 2012’s Avengers. “Just like Budapest all over again,” Clint tells Natasha while fighting off Chitauri troupes. “You and I remember Budapest very differently,” she replies. Fans have been curious ever since.

And then there are fans who are just more curious about Natasha’s life in general, her likes and dislikes, while still getting some things under wraps. “I want to see the film strike a balance between offering details about her life,” Sierra Edds said, “but I don’t want to be flooded with too much.” It makes sense — Natasha is known for her secrecy.

“The constant struggle between the guilt from her past life and her desire for vindication makes for a great emotional experience,” continued Edds. “The point of solo movies is to make you feel more connected and closer to the character. As much as I like a mysterious backstory, I love some interesting and juicy details, and I think it would be most appropriate for the character to keep some of her secrets and dignity while still satisfying [fans’] curiosity.”

Sims echoed the sentiment, noting that she doesn’t want the movie to be an “expository buffet” with needless plot details thrown in as “fluff.” With so many comic book appearances to draw from, there’s plenty of material the movie could explore without resorting to anything too contrived.

Brad Marchand, Bruins Come Back to Beat Blues, Take 1-0 Lead in Stanley Cup Final

The Boston Bruins took the opening game of the 2019 Stanley Cup Final, defeating the St. Louis Blues 4-2 on Monday at TD Garden in Boston.

Sean Kuraly scored the go-ahead goal for the Bruins in the third period, pouncing on a rebound from a shot by Zdeno Chara.

Brad Marchand tacked on an empty-netter with 1:49 left in the game to seal the victory.

Tuukka Rask, who had averaged 1.84 goals against through 17 postseason games, stymied the Blues’ attack and made 18 saves.

Although Jordan Binnington was credited with 34 saves, few would argue the Blues goaltender had a good night. Kuraly’s goal capped off a game in which Binnington’s inexperience appeared to be an issue.

steve simmons @simmonssteve

Binnington should have stopped two of the three goals scored on him this far tonight.

Tom Gulitti @TomGulittiNHL

I know the shots have been lopsided Bruins since first period, but Binnington, to me, hasn’t been clean stopping puck most of night.

That cost him a goal there after mishandling initial shot by Chara.

The way in which Binnington slowly unraveled mirrored his team’s performance.

The Blues seized a 2-0 lead in the second period. Brayden Schenn scored the opening goal with 7:23 off the board in the opening frame, and Vladimir Tarasenko added St. Louis’ second at the 1:00 mark of the second period.

Tarasenko’s goal seemed to be exactly the wake-up call the Bruins needed, though. Boston out-shot St. Louis 18-3 in the second period en route to tying the score.

Connor Clifton missed the mark with his close-range effort but had some good luck as the puck deflected into the goal off Binnington.

Despite having a raucous home crowd cheering them on from the start, the Bruins stumbled out of the gate. That might have been because Boston hadn’t played a competitive game since it swept the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final, which wrapped up May 16.

That was a long layoff, so from that perspective, going six games against the San Jose Sharks might have worked to the Blues’ benefit.

But any edge St. Louis might have had evaporated in the second period.

Mike Harrington @ByMHarrington

The #StlBlues have spent the last 22 minutes of this game barely able to break the puck out of their zone. There’s a certain inevitability of a #Bruins go-ahead goal coming here. #StanleyCup

Dan Rosen @drosennhl

The Bruins are making it look like a near impossible task for the Blues to breakout of their defensive zone with the puck. Meanwhile, the Bruins are breaking out with ease and speed.

Kuraly’s goal was predictable based on how much the Bruins were dominating. NHL Public Relations noted this was the first time the franchise had ever overcome a multi-goal deficit in a Stanley Cup Final game.

Blues coach Craig Berube can’t start panicking after one loss, yet his team threw away a golden opportunity to take a 1-0 series lead and wrest away home-ice advantage.

And while Binnington might rebound in Game 2, his level of composure was a clear question mark coming into the Stanley Cup Final. This time last year, the 25-year-old was wrapping up a season in the AHL with the Providence Bruins.

Considering Boston entered Monday averaging 3.35 goals per game in the playoffs—second-best of the postseason—St. Louis needs more from Binnington if it’s going to capture its first Stanley Cup.

What’s Next?

The teams return to the ice Wednesday for Game 2 in Boston. The puck drops at 8 p.m. ET. The Bruins will look to extend their eight-game winning streak.

Malaysia’s last surviving male Sumatran rhino has died. Here’s why that’s important.

Vale, Tam.
Vale, Tam.

Image: WWF-Malaysia / RAYMOND ALFRED

By Shannon Connellan

Tam, the last surviving male Sumatran rhinoceros in Malaysia, has died, making the future of the species look particularly grim.

According to Reuters, Tam was about 30 years old, and since being captured in 2008, spent his days inhabiting a wildlife reserve in the Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo.

Tam was cared for by an NGO called the Borneo Rhino Alliance (BORA), who have been racing the clock to save the Sumatran rhino from extinction through breeding.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news that Tam, Malaysia’s last male Sumatran rhino, has passed away. We will share more details in due time, but right now we need some time to mourn his passing,” a statement on BORA’s Facebook page reads.

Sumatran rhinos are the smallest living rhinos in the world, and the only Asian rhino sporting two horns, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). They usually live between 35 and 40 years and only exist on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra.

According to the WWF, the Sumatran rhino “currently competes with the Javan rhino for the unenviable title of most threatened rhino species.”

The not-for-profit organisation posted a moving tribute for Tam on Facebook on Monday.

“Our hearts are filled with sadness as we mourn not only the loss of wildlife but the loss of a species,” WWF captioned the photo.

“Let the loss of Tam be the wakeup call that we need to spring into action. Our wildlife needs protection now and like it or not, we are their only hope.”

Though Sumatran rhinos were already declared extinct in the wild in Malaysia in 2015, with poaching and habitat loss identified by a study as the main reasons, Tam’s death is incredibly bad news for the survival of the species — as the last male, he takes with him strong chances of breeding little rhinos.

There’s just one Sumatran rhino left in Malaysia, Reuters notes, a female called Iman, who was captured in 2014. She is now the very last surviving member of the subspecies in the country, after a captive female rhino called Puntung died in 2017.

Malaysia has reportedly been attempting to breed the rhinos using IVF since 2011, but it’s been an unsuccessful journey.

But all’s not entirely lost — there’s one tiny glimmer of hope. Christina Liew, state minister for tourism, culture and environment, told the news outlet that Tam’s genetic material has been preserved for future breeding attempts.

Tam’s death comes just weeks after the UN published an exhaustive report on the globe’s increasingly perilous extinction rate — the highest we’ve seen in human history. Scientists annually highlight this, listing the species that after millions of years of existence on this planet, are gone for good.

Rhinos, pursued and killed by humans for their horns, and subject to the global effects of human-induced habitat loss and climate change, are just one species suffering from this extinction crisis.

Notes arguing over flower ownership are the most British thing ever

It all started with a note.

Late last week, I was walking long the road I live on in Brixton, London, when I spotted a note affixed to a tree. “Please don’t pick my flowers. Thank you,” read the note, pinned just above a flowering lupin. Pretty innocuous, you might think.

The other residents on my street didn’t seem to think so.

By Saturday afternoon, the tree, once adorned by flowers, was now bedecked with handwritten notes, encased in plastic wallets.

The lupin was now nowhere to be seen and, in its place, appeared to be the paper equivalent of a blazing argument.

“In an area massively affected by gentrification, it’s sad to see people claiming ownership of even the flowers,” read the first note, pinned below the original.

People on my street are having an almighty row over who owns some flowers. There have been no raised voices, just handwritten notes placed inside plastic wallets and pinned to a post. pic.twitter.com/2sSRMkpUtr

“Flowers on the public pavement are owned by all the community, not just the house they happen to fall in front of,” read a pink Post-It Note, with four hand-drawn rhetorical flowers.

“Are you serious? This is not about ownership or gentrification, this is about someone trying to make the street a nicer place for everyone by planting flowers and people stealing them and stamping on them,” read a note pinned below the pink Post-It. “How can you try and justify that?”

“Totally agree, this was done with love and a spirit of community for heaven’s sake!” someone added to the end of the yellow piece of paper.

On the other side of the tree, one note served as clarification in this heated war of words. “The council do not pay anything towards planting or watering nor do they provide any maintenance,” read the typed page. “These flowers did not grow wild and were here because they were planted, watered, maintained and replaced by local residents.”

Per the note, the flowers were, in fact, part of a community project run by volunteers in the neighbourhood.

The note, which also gave instructions on how to get involved in the Father Nature community project, also called out two notes for being “not helpful.”

The author of the green ink note — whose message was identified as “not helpful” — responded to the clarification.

“Helpful to know that the flowers were part of a community project. However, if that is the case it was very misleading to refer to them as ‘my’ flowers,” read the note. “What a shame that you have taken it upon yourself to dig up the community flowers.”

It did not end there, reader.

One final note — a yellow Post-It — was posted.

“Love, you’ve got plenty of spare time on your hands. Why don’t you plant some flowers? ‘Mine’ are going elsewhere.”

Meanwhile, on Twitter people were taking sides.

I’m fully in team post-it note and absolutely abhor green pen person.

I like it when someone thinks they have won an argument by simply saying the word “gentrification”

Regardless on which side you’re taking, one thing is clear as day: this entire exchange is the most British thing you’ll ever see.
