Israel has attacked Syrian military positions in the country’s south, killing three soldiers and wounding seven others, Syria’s state-run media reported.

The Israeli military confirmed the attack that took place early on Sunday in a series of tweets, saying it was in response to two rockets fired from Syria at Mount Hermon late on Saturday. One of the rockets landed in Israel but no damage or injuries were reported.

State news agency SANA quoted an unnamed military official as saying the Israeli attacks struck military positions in the southern region of Quneitra, near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. They also caused material damage, it said.

The Israeli military said the targets included two artillery batteries, several observation and intelligence posts and an SA2 air defence unit.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition’s war monitor, said Israeli warplanes struck positions and an arms depot of Iranian troops and Lebanon’s Hezbollah fighters.

Hezbollah is a Lebanese armed and political group that, along with Iran, supports Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad.

Israel has acknowledged carrying out dozens of air raids in Syria on Iranian targets and Tehran’s allies.

Last week, Israeli aircraft hit a Syrian military post after the army said an anti-aircraft missile was fired at one of its fighter jets. Syrian media said a soldier was killed in that attack.

Israel says it is determined to prevent its arch foe Iran from entrenching itself militarily in Syria, where Tehran backs al-Assad in the country’s eight-year-long war which has killed more than 370,000 people.

This second exchange of fire between Syria and Israel in a week comes amid heightened tensions over Iran, after US President Donald Trump last year pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal to curb Iran’s nuclear programme.

In recent weeks, the US and some of its Gulf allies have accused Iran of aggression, including attacks on four oil tankers off the coast of the United Arab Emirates.

Tehran has strongly denied involvement in the incidents.

Did ‘silencer’ make a difference in Virginia Beach carnage?

The shooter who killed 12 people in a government office building in Virginia Beach used a firearm equipped with a ‘silencer’ that muffles the sound of gunfire.

It’s the nightmare scenario that gun-control advocates have warned about amid efforts in recent years to ease restrictions on the devices, which they say can help shooters escape detection and inflict more carnage.

But gun-rights advocates and most law enforcement experts say DeWayne Craddock’s use of a suppressor likely had no bearing on his ability to kill so many people in so little time Friday.

Virginia is among 42 states that allow residents to purchase and possess suppressors, though some cities and towns – including Virginia Beach – prohibit them.

Known colloquially as a silencer, a suppressor was attached to the .45-caliber handgun that police say the shooter used to kill a dozen people on three floors of the building where he worked before police closed in and, after a protracted gunbattle, fatally shot him.

‘Sounded like a nail gun’

That could at least partially explain why survivors of the attack said they were caught off guard and initially puzzled by what was happening. One described hearing something that sounded like a nail gun.

“This is the concern we were talking about when Republicans were trying to deregulate silencers as ‘ear protection,’” said David Chipman, a retired agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and now the senior policy adviser with Giffords, a gun-control lobbying group.

“Especially on a handgun, a suppressor will distort the sound in such a way that it would not immediately be recognisable as gunfire to people who sort of know what that sound is.”

Others say the shooter’s use of a silencer was less of a factor in enabling him to carry out the rampage than was his familiarity with the building and even possibly his military background, both of which may have given him a tactical advantage.

“A suppressor does not alter the lethality of the weapon at all. All it does is just limit the noise it makes,” said Gregory Shaffer, a retired FBI agent who was a member of the bureau’s elite Hostage Response Team.

“It doesn’t increase the rate of fire. It doesn’t do anything other than make it more comfortable to shoot because it’s not so loud.”

It’s not immediately clear how long Friday’s attack lasted, or how much time passed before the first police officers arrived. The police department is in the same complex as the building where the shooting took place.

It also wasn’t yet known how Craddock got the suppressor he used on his handgun, though authorities have said he legally purchased multiple firearms recently.

Gaining in popularity

Authorities have three days to conduct a background check when someone is buying a firearm. But suppressors are regulated by the National Firearms Act, which also governs the sale of machine guns, and the extensive background check can take upward of eight months or more before the sale can go through.

Despite the barriers, suppressors have gained in popularity. In 2008, when West Valley City, Utah-based SilencerCo was formed, about 18,000 of the devices were being sold each year.

The company, which controls an estimated 70 percent of the market, sells roughly that many each month.

Nicknamed “cans,” the devices were invented in the early 1900s by MIT-educated Hiram Percy Maxim, who also invented a muffler for gasoline engines. They were brought under NFA regulations after Depression-era game wardens expressed concern that hunters would use them to poach.

A suppressor does not eliminate the sound a gun makes but generally diminishes it by 20 to 35 decibels, leaving most guns still louder than your average ambulance siren.

“Clearly this was an individual who did understand and have experience with firearms and had given potentially some forethought into the advantage that using a suppressor would offer him, particularly the suppressor coupled with the caliber of weapon he was using,” said Thor Eells, executive director of the National Tactical Officers Association and a retired law enforcement officer with the Colorado Springs Police Department, where he oversaw a SWAT division.

Some have questioned how secure the building was where police say the shooter and all but one of his victims worked.

A government facility, the building is open to the public, but security passes are required to enter inner offices, conference rooms and other work areas, officials said.

As a current employee, the shooter would have had such a pass and would have known the floor plan, areas that were “easy to control,” where the best places to hide were and how to move quickly from one area to another, Eells said.

While responding police might have had some familiarity with the building, it’s very possible the shooter knew it a lot better after working there for years.

His protracted gunfight with law enforcement officers would indicate that he “was in a place that was difficult for officers to access or engage,” Eells said.

“Whether that was happenstance or intentional, it’s too early to tell.”

Andy Ruiz Jr. pulled off one of the most shocking upsets in heavyweight boxing history as he beat undefeated Anthony Joshua by seventh-round TKO for his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Ruiz, who was listed as an 11-1 underdog at Caesars Palace, knocked Joshua down twice in the seventh round, leading to the TKO:

Entering Saturday, the 29-year-old Joshua had won all 22 of his professional bouts, all of which came by knockout, minus a unanimous decision win over Joseph Parker in March 2018.

Ruiz is now 33-1, with his lone defeat coming to Parker.

Ruiz made it clear he meant business in a frenetic third round that featured the two fighters trading knockdowns:

The challenger knocked down Joshua a second time, however, and looked to be in control of the bout.

Joshua regained his composure in the fourth and fifth rounds, but the tide turned in the sixth before Ruiz dropped the champ in the seventh.

After the match, Ruiz was thrilled and gave credit to his heritage for the win:

It was an unbelievable sight to see Joshua crediting Ruiz for the win and not the other way around. As The Ringer’s Kevin Clark pointed out, Ruiz looked out of shape during the match:

Kevin Clark @bykevinclark

A guy named Andy Ruiz who has the build of an out-of-shape left guard just dropped Anthony Joshua. I am legitimately stunned. This is amazing. This is, somehow, a war of a fight.

That ended up not mattering. As Boxing Scene noted, Joshua looked more gassed despite clearly being more fit:

BoxingScene.com @boxingscene

Looking at their body types. Who would have predicted Joshua would be the guy who looked dead tired and looking for an exit plan. Joshua’s entire mental state changed when Ruiz landed those hooks to the body prior to the TKO round.

As for where this ranks among the greatest upsets in heavyweight boxing history, Buster Douglas over Mike Tyson as a 42-1 underdog still stands alone given how invincible the heavyweight champion was at the time, but Ruiz over Joshua isn’t far behind.

Eric Raskin of USBets.com has it ranked No. 1 since the Feb. 11, 1990 bout:

Eric Raskin @EricRaskin

No. No, it is not a bigger upset than Douglas-Tyson. That’s ridiculous. (But it’s probably the biggest heavyweight upset since Douglas-Tyson.)

Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao ranks it as one of the greatest upsets in boxing history:

Manny Pacquiao @MannyPacquiao

WOW! Andy Ruiz just shocked the world! That was one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.

Regardless of where this ranks all-time, the question is what happens moving forward.

All talk about a potential superfight between Joshua and Deontay Wilder or Tyson Fury will presumably be put on hold after this monumental upset. And as boxing insider Mike Coppinger noted, the juice for a Joshua-Wilder fight has lost a bit of its luster with the defeat:

Mike Coppinger @MikeCoppinger

Welp, this is what happens when you marinate boxing matches. The biggest fight that could be made in boxing now dead. Deontay Wilder-Anthony Joshua, if and when it happens, even if Joshua avenges defeat to Andy Ruiz, will never be as special as it could have been #JoshuaRuiz

Wilder, who lined up rematches with Luis Ortiz and Fury before the Joshua result, offered his own post-match remarks after the previously undefeated fighter’s loss:

Deontay Wilder @BronzeBomber

He wasn’t a true champion. His whole career was consisted of lies, contradictions and gifts.
Facts and now we know who was running from who!!!!
#TilThisDay

Joshua did as well, and a rematch with Ruiz should be in the works based on comments made to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix (h/t ESPN’s Ariel Helwani):

Ariel Helwani @arielhelwani

Anthony Joshua tells @SIChrisMannix afterwards that he plans on exercising his rematch clause. “100%,” he said.

If anything, Ruiz could also get a shot at Fury or Wilder at some point as a new heavyweight champion.

As for now, however, the first Mexican-American heavyweight champion in boxing history will bask in the glow of one of the more shocking displays this century.

A woman filed a police report accusing Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar of rape, according to Brazilian website UOL (via Fernando Kallas of AS). The Associated Press confirmed the report.

The alleged rape took place May 15 in Paris.

The complainant said she flew from Brazil to France with the intention of meeting the international star after exchanging messages with him on Instagram. According to the report, Neymar met her at a hotel and was “drunk” and “aggressive” before forcibly having sex with her without consent.

The woman said she returned to Brazil two days later, upset and scared to speak out. She filed the report in Sao Paulo on Friday.

Neither Neymar nor PSG has commented on the report.

The 27-year-old just completed his second season with the French club, helping the squad win the Ligue 1 title in each year.

He has been in his home country to train with the Brazil national team, which is preparing for a friendly against Qatar and the upcoming Copa America later this month.

Protester grabs Kamala Harris’ microphone at San Francisco forum

poster=”http://bit.ly/2MmTbKh;

true

SAN FRANCISCO — An animal-rights protester snatched Sen. Kamala Harris’ microphone during a Democratic presidential candidates forum in San Francisco on Saturday before being escorted from the stage.

The California senator was discussing implementing her gender pay-gap plan at the MoveOn “Big Ideas Forum” when the protester ran onto the stage, took the microphone from her hand and began speaking to the crowd. Harris, meanwhile, quickly walked off the stage.

Story Continued Below

“We’re asking for a much bigger idea than…” the protester said before his microphone was cut off and he was surrounded by event security then dragged from the stage.

The protester, Aidan Cook, of the Direct Action Everywhere animal-rights group, was asking for Harris to “support ordinary citizens rescuing animals rather than the factory farms that abuse animals, sicken local populations and repress whistleblowing activity,” according to a press release by DAE.

“I live in Oakland and I’m one of Kamala Harris’ constituents. I came to the MoveOn Big Ideas Forum today because there’s one big idea that all of the 2020 presidential candidates are ignoring. Which is that is by raising and slaughtering billions of animals every year not only are we completely … undermining our values as a nation of compassionate animal lovers but we are literally preparing to drive our society off a cliff. Animal agriculture is one of the leading causes of climate change,” Cook told POLITICO.

“We’ve done everything we could to try to start this conversation through normal channels, we’ve reached out to all the campaigns, including Kamala’s, we’ve reached out to MoveOn and pretty much have been completely ignored,” Cook said when asked if taking the microphone from Harris’ hand could be seen as threatening.

As Cook was being taken off stage, a moderator said, “Thank you so much sir, for your big idea, but we want to make sure that we are able to get through this. It’s OK, folks, it’s OK. People have their own big ideas.”

After the incident, the crowd began to chant “Kamala” as the candidate walked back on.

“It’s all good. It’s all good. Don’t worry,” Harris told the crowd, before telling the moderator, “You had a question I want to answer.”

Harris’ husband, Douglas Emhoff, who helped escort Cook offstage later tweeted that they “are good.”

A Harris spokesperson declined to comment. MoveOn did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Cook was not charged and was let go after being escorted outside.

Mo Salah, Divock Origi Goals Give Liverpool Champions League Title vs. Tottenham

Liverpool won the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2005 thanks to a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday’s final at Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Mohamed Salah‘s early penalty, after Moussa Sissoko was flagged for handball in the box, and a late second-half goal by substitute Divock Origi provided ample consolation for the Reds, who missed out on winning the Premier League title to Manchester City despite earning 97 points.

Liverpool still haven’t won a domestic title since 1990, but they have won this trophy six times, twice more than any other English club, in its guises as both the European Cup and Champions League.

Kane Mistake Proves Pochettino Not Ruthless Enough for Major Trophies

It was always going to be a tough decision whether to risk Harry Kane after his ankle injury. Manager Mauricio Pochettino would have been wise to hedge his bets with the striker who hadn’t played since the quarter-final first leg against Manchester City back in April.

Yet Pochettino rolled the dice and played a far from match fit Kane from the start. It backfired and showed Pochettino isn’t ruthless enough to win major trophies.

Kane floundered from the off, barely getting involved during a turgid first half:

Squawka Football @Squawka

Harry Kane recorded just seven touches in the opening 30 minutes, fewer than any other Spurs player on the field.

He’s struggled to get into the game so far.
#UCLFinal https://t.co/rrYbLQaa2H

OptaJoe @OptaJoe

11 – Harry Kane had just 11 touches during the first half of the Champions League final; fewer than any other Tottenham player. Phantom. #UCLfinal https://t.co/4K1NL0qx2v

Yet while Liverpool chief Jurgen Klopp acted to correct his own misjudged gamble on striker Roberto Firmino, substituting the Brazilian for Origi two minutes before the hour mark, Pochettino persisted with the out-of-sorts Kane.

Paddy Power @paddypower

I don’t care if he isn’t 100% fit – Spurs should bring Harry Kane on for the second half.

Handling Tottenham’s star player and his obvious desire to play in this showpiece game demanded a ruthless touch. Pochettino had to stay firm and hold Kane back to preserve the in-form partnership of Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura.

The latter was cruelly consigned to the bench to make way for Kane, despite his hat-trick heroics to beat Ajax in the second leg of the semi-finals. It was a bonus for Liverpool, who surely wouldn’t have relished tracking the prolific winger’s pace in the stifling heat of the Spanish capital.

Goal @goal

Two substitutions from Liverpool so far, but none from Spurs. Where’s Lucas Moura? #UCL https://t.co/vwpUCCDrfF

Pochettino finally summoned Moura on 66 minutes, but only for busy midfielder Harry Winks. Without Moura running through the middle, into spaces Kane was occupying, Tottenham continued to lack enough impetus in attack.

Moura and Son’s pace and varied movement represented the ideal weapons to exploit Liverpool’s fondness to play a high defensive line. Instead, Kane gave Virgil van Dijk a static target and a way to keep play in front.

Pochettino’s failure to make the tough but necessary call spoke to the club’s inability to win a major trophy. When it comes to the crunch, Spurs aren’t aggressive enough, neither on the pitch nor in the dugout.

If this precocious squad is ever going to earn silverware, it might have to be without Pochettino calling the shots.

Liverpool FC beat Tottenham to win Champions League trophy

An early goal from Mohamed Salah and a late one from Divock Origi gave Liverpool a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday’s all-English Champions League final as coach Juergen Klopp finally got his hands on Europe’s biggest prize.

Egypt striker Salah, who had painful memories of last year’s final defeat by Real Madrid after suffering a shoulder injury, got his side off to a flying start in Madrid by lashing home from the penalty spot after a handball from Moussa Sissoko.

Tottenham kept their heads after a nightmare opening and came to life when semi-final hat-trick hero Lucas Moura came off the bench but, with Harry Kane lacking sharpness after an ankle injury, another miraculous European comeback proved beyond them.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

#SixTimes pic.twitter.com/jVvGdhvZXZ

— Liverpool FC (@LFC) June 1, 2019

Liverpool did not produce much of their usual whirlwind attacking football but they were more intelligent and powerful than Spurs and sealed a sixth European Cup triumph with an arrowed finish from substitute Origi in the 87th minute.

Liverpool sealed the contest three minutes from time when Origi drove home from an angle to start the celebrations for a first title for under manager Juergen Klopp.

Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino made the difficult decision to drop semi-final hat-trick hero Moura for England striker Harry Kane, who had not played since early April with an ankle injury.

It was Moura, with a poked effort inside the box, who had Spurs’ only real opportunity in the closing stages after Liverpool keeper Alisson palmed away a long shot from Son Heung Min.

Kane looked sluggish but was not the only one off pace in a game played in the distinctly un-English conditions of 30-degree Celsius heat.

The slow tempo was in contrast to a furious start when Mane latched onto a long ball from Virgil van Dijk and took on Sissoko. The French midfielder blocked the cross with his chest but a deflection took the ball onto his raised arm and Damir Skomina pointed to the spot.

Video assistance did not come to Spurs rescue – unlike in their quarter-final win over Manchester City – and Salah’s powerful kick flew over diving keeper Hugo Lloris.

It proved sweet redemption for Egyptian star Salah, who suffered an injury in last season’s final defeat to Real Madrid which also impacted his performances at the World Cup.

Spurs laboured in search of an equaliser before their dreams were finally ended by substitute Origi. A corner was not cleared and the forward found the bottom corner from Joel Matip’s pass.

Premier League runners-up Liverpool finished 26 points ahead of Spurs but such a difference was not to be seen at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium. The three week break from the end of the Premier League seemed to have stiffened rather than loosened muscles.

Liverpool manager Klopp had lost six consecutive finals, including two in the Champions League, going into the game, and would have been anxious at his team sitting back and inviting pressure.

Kane finally showed himself with a neat flick to release Dele Alli but he was easily crowded out, a fate all too often shared by fellow winger Son. Matip was a particular rock in theáLiverpool defence, though man of the match went to his partner van Dijk.

Spurs emerged early from the break only marginally more energized and Alli’s half chance was blocked by the ever-present Matip. The introduction of Moura for midfielder Harry Winks, in the 65th minute, finally offered the lumbering Kane some assistance.

Origi replaced Roberto Firmino, another who had overcome fitness doubts to start, and James Milner came on for Georginio Wijnaldum either side of the Spurs switch.

Milner flashed a shot just wide before Tottenham had their only spell of slight pressure. It ended when Alisson turned Christian Erikson’s free kick wide and Origi sealed their fate soon after.

Spurs were the 40th club to reach the European Cup final and would have become the 23rd side to lift the trophy. They never looked like doing so; Klopp, and Liverpool, could celebrate.
