Can Hopeless Lakers Fans Inspire Team While Protesting Lack of Leadership?

LOS ANGELES — It started with a post on Reddit, a plan to protest the Los Angeles Lakers and the team’s direction. On Friday, over 100 people gathered outside of Staples Center for an hour in a disorganized but passionate nonviolent outcry over the state of the franchise.

“Hire LaVar Ball,” yelled one of the students from Calabasas High School, skipping class for the day.

“I’m missing physics right now,” exclaimed one of his classmates. “I’d rather be doing this.”

“This is a dream come true,” said diehard Los Angeles Clippers fan Clipper Darrell, who crashed the Lakers’ party. “I can’t believe how the tables have turned in L.A.”

Yes, there was plenty of nonsense worth ignoring. The Ball quote borders on violence to the senses, but within the group of diehard fans were some sound, rational arguments on the Lakers and their seeming lack of direction.

“[Owner] Jeanie Buss will not listen to us directly, but she’ll listen to you guys. She hates bad press,” Santa Monica College student Austin Geller said. “She is a marketing 101 [expert]. It’s all she lives for, and bad press is the worst thing you can have as a businessman or woman.”

A third of the crowd consisted of curious onlookers and gawkers (some from the Clippers’ nearby office), and the number of protesters probably equaled the media members. But that’s why the event was ultimately a success.

“Everyone is aware of it,” someone in the Lakers front office said of the protest. “It’s being reported everywhere.”

Carlos Osorio/Associated Press

The team has come under fire in recent days after contract negotiations with potential head coach Tyronn Lue fell through. Earvin “Magic” Johnson stepped down from his position of president of basketball operations on the final day of the regular season, announcing the move before telling LeBron James or Buss personally.

“That’s on Jeanie Buss and [general manager] Rob Pelinka,” Geller said. “If you’re going to sign LeBron to a four-year [deal], you’re practically handing over the franchise key to him, so why not hire a coach that he’s comfortable playing with? Why dip your feet halfway in?”

Red Hot Chili Peppers bass player and longtime Lakers fan Flea wasn’t at the protest, but on Thursday, he posted his thoughts on Instagram, writing, “There is a weakness, a malaise in the organization and it is breaking my heart.”

That message seemed to hit home, and while some of the protestors Friday were demanding the Buss family sell the team, many fretted more about the lack of public communication.

Other than a couple of brief press releases and a Buss tweet last week after a dinner “catching up with @MagicJohnson,” the Lakers have been relatively silent.

“Jeanie is allowing the media to run the narrative, and I don’t think the media is wrong by the way, but show some leadership,” copywriter Michael Anapolsky said Friday. “If you can imagine working for a company where the leader just hides in the room the whole time, letting rumors run rampant, that is not the way a leader should run a company—and we’re talking about a $3 billion organization.”

Calabasas student Jacob Samuel said: “The core problem is not establishing who is the leader. You don’t know who is running the show. You don’t know if it’s Jeanie, you don’t know [if it’s Linda or Kurt Rambis], and then you don’t know what Rob Pelinka is actually doing.”

After Johnson’s curtain call, the Lakers opened up their facility to the media the following day for exit interviews; except former head coach Luke Walton (still on the job, albeit briefly) and Pelinka were nowhere to be found. Fans are generally unaware of how Buss’ special adviser, Linda Rambis, and her husband, Kurt, came into power.

“Kurt Rambis is playing a major role in the franchise’s coaching search,” ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted Wednesday. “He’s emerging as a powerful voice in basketball operations.”

“She needs to get real basketball heads who are outside of the family business now,” recent law school graduate Amir Khan said. “Jeanie was the Mother of Dragons. Everyone loved her, but it’s been a complete 180 just in the last month or so.”

“I know she loves the Lakers. I know this is her life and she gives it her all. I want her to see everyone is giving her a bad name, a bad rep,” he continued. “The evidence is showing that we’re getting worse and worse. We can’t close a deal with a coach.”

“I agree with why fans are upset … ever since they’ve signed LeBron, they’ve done everything correctly in how to mess up. It’s wild,” Cal State Long Beach journalism major Bryan Aparicio said. “You want to believe in this front office, even going back to the debacle a couple of days ago with Ty Lue. You had him, he celebrates with a cake, a Laker cake and it just doesn’t happen.”

So, what’s the solution?

“Hire LaVar Ball.”

No, seriously.

“Bob Myers from Golden State has done an excellent job,” Samuel said.

“Myers, Masai Ujiri [of the Toronto Raptors] or Jerry West [with the Clippers],” Anapolsky answered.

“Jerry West is here; he’s going to be a Clipper for life,” Clipper Darrell boasted.

Barry Gutierrez/Associated Press

But if Myers or Ujiri agreed to come, would the fans be willing to give up their first-round pick in June’s draft (roughly 11th) in compensation to the Warriors or Raptors?

“I would do that, easily. The first-round pick means nothing if it’s not utilized properly,” Samuel said.

“I wouldn’t give up that pick, but that’s kind of my point,” Anapolsky explained. “I wish there were people smarter than me in the front office. And that’s my issue. I don’t think there are people that are smarter than me in the front office.”

What if giving up the first-rounder got in the way of the Lakers acquiring Anthony Davis in trade from the New Orleans Pelicans?

“I feel like with a president like Masai, if we don’t get AD, we still have somebody who knows about roster construction,” Khan said. “We still have salary-cap space this summer. If we don’t get AD because of the 10th or 11th pick, we still have a smart basketball mind in place.”

A small protest is unlikely to lead to an ownership or leadership change, but the media coverage will put some pressure on the Lakers front office to at least communicate its position.

“If something as small as a Reddit post can get [the media] out here, I don’t [know] if a difference will be made, but at least they’ll be heard,” Aparicio said.

“The team has to save face. We need stability more than anything,” Anapolsky said. “I know signing a coach doesn’t go against the salary cap, so all you’re doing is being cheap. Five-year deals are kind of the standard now in the league. It’s not my money, but if Jeanie can’t afford it, then we desperately need an owner that has deep enough pockets.”

“This summer is the answer for the next couple of years. We need to make something happen, so the next three years of LeBron’s contract isn’t a s–tshow,” Khan said. “Buss cares about the fans. Her seeing this should hurt her a little bit. The people who are pissed are the ones that love the organization.”

Warriors Rumors: Klay Thompson Will Consider Testing FA If Offered Less Than Max

Klay Thompson wants to remain with the Golden State Warriors, but he doesn’t appear inclined to give them a hometown discount.

Per The Athletic’s Sam Amick, Thompson will be tempted to test free agency if the Warriors offer less than a full five-year max contract worth $189.7 million.

There’s been heavy speculation that the Warriors will lose at least one key player from their roster this summer, though the consensus has been that Kevin Durant is likely to leave if he opts out of his deal.

B/R’s Ric Bucher said last month on The Herd with Colin Cowherd (h/t NBC Sports Bay Area’s Josh Schrock) that “it’s done” and Durant is leaving, with the New York Knicks mentioned as the most likely destination for the two-time NBA Finals MVP.

Thompson hasn’t been discussed as much because it’s been assumed Golden State will give him what he wants.

The Athletic’s Ethan Strauss reported in January there is “expectation within and outside” the Warriors organization that Thompson is staying with the franchise.

Golden State will likely be forced to make big decisions this summer to avoid salary-cap ramifications. Per Yossi Gozlan of Warriors Wire, the two-time defending NBA champions would pay $276.3 million next season between player salaries and luxury-tax penalties if Durant and Thompson re-sign and the rest of the roster returns intact.

Thompson has been a critical piece of the Warriors’ current run of success. The 29-year-old has averaged 19.5 points per game and shot 41.9 percent from three-point range in eight NBA seasons.

Trump: Discussing Biden probe with Barr would be ‘appropriate’

Joe Biden

2020 elections

Rudy Giuliani, the president’s personal attorney, is urging Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden, raising questions about whether Donald Trump would pressure his attorney general to do the same.

President Donald Trump told POLITICO on Friday that it would be “appropriate” for him to speak to Attorney General Bill Barr about launching an investigation into his potential 2020 rival, Joe Biden, or his son, Hunter.

The question of whether Trump could pressure Barr to probe Biden is coming under scrutiny after Rudy Giuliani, the president’s personal attorney, said he would be traveling to Ukraine to urge the incoming government there to look at Hunter Biden’s involvement with a Ukrainian energy company that has reportedly been in prosecutors’ crosshairs. The efforts appear to be part of a broader campaign by Trump’s allies to damage the former Democratic vice president’s White House campaign and have raised questions about whether Trump’s team is trying to enlist a foreign government to aid the president’s re-election bid.

Story Continued Below

“Certainly it would be an appropriate thing to speak to him about, but I have not done that as of yet. … It could be a very big situation,” Trump said in a 15-minute telephone interview on Friday afternoon, which stemmed from POLITICO’s inquiries for a separate story.

Barr also drew attention during his recent congressional testimony when he demurred on a question about whether anybody in the White House had ever suggested that he launch an investigation.

The two Bidens’ connections to Ukraine have become a subject of deep interest among the president’s political allies, who charge that Biden as vice president pressured the Ukrainian government to oust a prosecutor in order to benefit his son. The Ukrainian prosecutor had reportedly faced allegations of ignoring corruption among Ukraine’s business and political elite. No evidence has emerged that Joe Biden was acting to assist his son, and it is not clear that the official was probing the company at the time.

The New York Times earlier this month reported on Giuliani’s efforts to investigate and publicize the issue.

The president argued that the alleged conflict of interest, or appearance thereof, was not mushrooming into an all-out scandal because Biden is a Democrat.

“Because he’s a Democrat,” Trump said, the report had about “one-hundredth” the impact as it would have if he “were a Republican.”

That’s not for lack of effort by the president’s allies. Giuliani is about to travel to Ukraine in an effort to push the country’s president-elect to pursue the investigation into Hunter Biden’s involvement with the energy company, Burisma Holdings. He also wants Ukraine to probe whether the country’s officials were trying to help Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election by releasing forged documents tied to Paul Manafort.

Biden’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Giuliani will leave Sunday and return Wednesday, he told POLITICO in an interview on Friday. During his trip, Giuliani said he expects to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky, a television actor who was elected president of the Ukraine last month and who has reportedly said he’s looking to replace one of the prosecutors involved in the cases.

“I just want to tell him, ‘Don’t let these crooks talk you out of the investigation. There are real facts there they’ve got to investigate,’” Giuliani said. “A lot of this stuff is a lot easier for them to get. They do get nervous if they think the government is going to scuttle this investigation.”

“It’d be a shame if it’s scuttled. My interest is as an American citizen and as a lawyer to the president,” he added.

The president said Friday he didn’t know much about Giuliani’s upcoming trip but plans to speak with him before he leaves the country.

“I have not spoken to him at any great length, but I will,” Trump said in the interview. “I will speak to him about it before he leaves.”

The former New York mayor for weeks has been talking with reporters about the Biden-Ukraine connection, insisting it is a scandal.

“I don’t see how you get from here to the presidency without that being investigated,” Giuliani said, swinging back at critics who say the president’s attorney is openly encouraging a foreign government to meddle in the American election.

“If I wanted to meddle in the election, I’d be talking about it a year from now,” Giuliani said. “I’d have kept it for myself and I’d have popped it right before the Democratic convention. That’d be fun.”

Trump’s critics have long feared that the president would pressure the Justice Department to investigate his political opponents.

During the 2016 campaign, Trump and his allies led chants of “Lock her up!” in reference to Clinton, though there has been no public follow-up on the Clinton investigation since the arrival of the Trump administration.

More recently, Barr has come under fire for his reply to Sen. Kamala Harris during a hearing last week where the attorney general did not explicitly answer the California Democrat’s questions about whether Trump or anyone else in the White House asked or suggested the DOJ launch an investigation.

“I’m trying to grapple with the world ‘suggest’,” Barr replied during the hearing. “I mean there have been discussions of, of matters out there that uh … they have not asked me open an investigation.”

Harris, who is running for president, followed up by asking if the White House had hinted at an investigation, and the attorney general replied, “I don’t know.”

Windhorst: Kyrie Irving, LeBron James ‘Need Each Other’ Ahead of Free Agency

ESPN NBA analyst Brian Windhorst said Friday he’s starting to get the sense Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James and Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving “kinda need each other.”

During an appearance on The Jump, Windhorst said the Lakers’ disappointing 2018-19 season combined with Irving’s struggles to fill the No. 1 role in Boston could lead to a reunion in L.A.:

Irving can use a player option in his contract to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

James and Irving spent three seasons together as members of the Cleveland Cavaliers after James returned from the Miami Heat and before Irving asked to be traded and was dealt to the Celtics. The Cavs’ first NBA championship in 2016 highlighted their partnership.

In July 2017, Windhorst reported the star point guard requested a trade from Cleveland because he wanted to “play in a situation where he can be more of a focal point,” which wasn’t going to happen with the NBA’s longtime gold standard as the franchise player.

Irving seemed to realize the error of his ways while fumbling his opportunity to become the leader of the Celtics, noting in January he called James to apologize for the way he acted before leaving the Cavs.

“I had to call ‘Bron and tell him I apologize for being that young player that wanted everything at his fingertips,” he told reporters. “I wanted to be the guy that led us to a championship. I wanted to be the leader. I wanted to be all that.”

James said during All-Star Weekend there were no lingering hard feelings.

“I love Kyrie. I love everything about Kyrie,” he said in February. “I love his family. I definitely love his shoes and his game. My kids love his shoes and his game too. So it’s all good.”

Now the question is whether the Lakers will make a serious push to reunite the stars as the front office tries to surround LeBron with more talent in his second season with the team.

Elon Musk will go to trial for calling British rescue diver a ‘pedo guy’ on Twitter

Tesla CEO Elon Musk will find himself back in court this year for a defamation trial over his tweet calling a Thai cave diver a “pedo.”

Elon Musk will soon find himself in court once again thanks to his tweets.

According to court documents filed on Friday, a judge is allowing the defamation lawsuit filed by British cave diver Vernon Unsworth against Musk to proceed to trial. Unsworth sued the Tesla CEO after Musk referred to the diver as a “pedo guy” in a tweet.

Musk engaged in a public spat over the rescue of a Thai boys soccer team that was trapped in a cave last summer. Musk was upset that the professional cave diver knocked his plan to rescue the soccer team via a specialized submarine as “a PR stunt” that “had absolutely no chance of working.”

“Never saw this British expat guy who lives in Thailand (sus) at any point when we were in the caves,” wrote Musk in a now-deleted series of tweets. “We will make one of the mini-sub/pod going all the way to Cave 5 no problemo. Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it.”

“Bet ya a signed dollar its true,” he added in a reply to his claim.

Musk later apologized for his words and said they were “spoken in anger.”

The Tesla CEO filed a motion to dismiss the suit late last year. Musk claimed that because he posted the insult on Twitter, a “social networking website infamous for invective and hyperbole,” his remarks were clearly “non-actionable opinions.” As The Verge points out, opinionated insults and hyperbole do not run afoul of defamation law.

However, U.S. district judge Stephen V. Wilson rejected Musk’s motion in the court order. Wilson says that Musk’s “subsequent conduct” in his Twitter reply and in a series of emails with BuzzFeed throws cold water on the billionaire’s dismissal claim.

The judge writes:

“Defendant argues that his statements used the same sort of imaginative and non-literal insults that courts deem opinion. He contends that the “reasonable reader would understand that [Defendant’s] over-the-top assertions—for example, that [Plaintiff] was a ‘pedo guy’ and had ‘a 12-year old child bride’—were not assertions of fact. However, this assertion is belied by Defendant’s subsequent conduct. Defendant did not call Plaintiff a “pedo guy” and leave it there; rather, he made follow-up statements indicating that he believed his statements to be true, such as tweets in which he offered to bet a signed dollar that his “pedo guy” allegation was true and mused that he thought it strange that Plaintiff had not sued him, implying that an innocent party would sue.”

In emails with a BuzzFeed reporter a month after apologizing to the diver, Musk defended his “pedo guy” claim by accusing Unsworth of taking a 12-year-old child bride. He also argued that the diver would sue if the claims were actually untrue.

Musk was last in court because of his tweets just this past April. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Committee alleged that he had posted misleading Tesla information in violation of an agreement between the two parties.

The judge has scheduled a pre-trial conference for Oct. 7, followed by a jury trial on Oct. 22.
