I, Jeff Bezos, super rich adult man and definite Big Boy, like trucks! And construction equipment! And moving dirt! VROOOOOOM! BEEP BEEP!

But you already know this! I told you so! When, yesterday, I hopped into a large front loader (can you believe they let me do this stuff?!) and, in front of a bunch of cameras, picked up some dirt and then DUMPED IT right back onto the same spot!

We’re investing $1.5 billion in our new air hub to get you your packages faster. Three million square feet, and it’s going to create 2,000 jobs. And if you’re guessing that driving a front loader was fun, you’re right! #amazon #prime pic.twitter.com/Cud4orKrC4

— Jeff Bezos (@JeffBezos) May 14, 2019

Like, WOW, right?! Was it necessary in any way?! No! Was it fun?! YOU’D BETTER BELIEVE IT!

“If you’re wondering,” I told the cheering crowd watching me play with my Big Boy toy at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, “that’s fun!”

But why am I being so silly?! Of course you were wondering! AND IT’S OBVIOUSLY FUN!

SEE ALSO: Sorry, Jeff Bezos is not a ‘style icon’

You’re also definitely curious about my plans for the $1.5 billion air hub I’m having built! Which is obviously why I dumped the dirt, goofballs! The hub will “get you your packages faster[!],” and is scheduled to open sometime in 2021! It will have planes! Planes are like SKY TRUCKS

VROOM VROOM! BEEP BEEP!

Now excuse me while I go play with my SPACE TOYS! RAAAAAAARRRRRR! BLAST OFF!

Trump, amid rising tensions, says he’s ‘sure’ Iran will negotiate soon

President Donald Trump

President Donald Trump on Wednesday accused news outlets of publishing reports that falsely portray his administration’s approach to escalating tensions in the Middle East, and re-upped his show of confidence that Iranian leaders will eventually come to the negotiating table.

“The Fake News Washington Post, and even more Fake News New York Times, are writing stories that there is infighting with respect to my strong policy in the Middle East,” the president wrote on Twitter. “There is no infighting whatsoever.”

Story Continued Below

“Different opinions are expressed and I make a decisive and final decision — it is a very simple process,” Trump continued. “All sides, views, and policies are covered. I’m sure that Iran will want to talk soon.”

The State Department on Wednesday ordered the evacuation of non-emergency staff from the U.S. Embassy in Iraq, a move made in the wake of intelligence indicating an increased risk of an attack from Iran or its proxies in the region.

Iran last week announced that it would end its compliance with parts of a 2015 nuclear agreement a year after Trump withdrew the United States from the deal, which was negotiated by former President Barack Obama, because he thought it was too weak. Trump retaliated by ramping up its sanctions targeting Iran.

However, Trump also said he would be willing to reenter talks with Iran. The president campaigned in opposition to unnecessary military conflict in the Middle East and has withdrawn most American troops from Syria and Afghanistan.

Iranian leaders in the past have said they won’t consider negotiations unless Trump returns the U.S. to the nuclear agreement.

The New York Times first reported on Monday that Trump was considering sending as many as 120,000 troops to the Middle East. The president on Tuesday dismissed the report as “fake news,” adding that he would send “a hell of a lot more troops than that” if he decided to get aggressive with Iran.

The Times piece described “sharp divisions in the administration over how to respond to Iran at a time when tensions are rising about Iran’s nuclear policy and its intentions in the Middle East.” The latest proposal was reported to stem from the request of John Bolton, Trump’s national security adviser, who in the past has pushed to topple Iran’s Islamist-led leadership.

Other senior officials and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have warned against engaging the United States in another conflict in the Middle East, likening the current situation to the precursors to the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.

Lawmakers have demanded more information about the alleged threats from Iran. Congressional leaders are slated to sit for a confidential briefing with administration officials on Thursday.

Beto O’Rourke livestreamed his haircut. Yes, his haircut.

By Marcus Gilmer

You can’t keep a streaming Beto down.

If you didn’t think livestreaming a dental appointment was mundane enough, wait til you see 2020 Democratic hopeful Beto O’Rourke stream a haircut. All 17 minutes of it.

O’Rourke has begun something of a “reboot” of his campaign, including an appearance on The View where he did a lot of apologizing, and now he’s back to doing what he does best: streaming average, everyday events like they’re political rallies.

SEE ALSO: Beto O’Rourke announces $5 trillion climate crisis plan

Of course, it’s not just about a haircut, not with an election to win. O’Rourke also used the opportunity to talk about all sorts of issues, like the immigration story of his barber, Manuel, who moved to El Paso from Juárez, its neighboring city in Mexico. He also took questions from viewers about things like a potential trip to Puerto Rico and higher education.

There’s also a delightful moment a little over 9 minutes in when a random guy enters the barber shop just looking for a haircut and sorta recognizes O’Rourke, and he takes it all in stride.

“Oh, you’re, uh, the guy on TV. Is it the governor? The mayor?” the man asks.

As Beto slips back into his old habits, it’s worth remembering that it was another livestream that put him on a lot of peoples’ radar to begin with. Back in March 2017, then-Congressman Beto drove 1,600 miles from Texas to D.C. with Republican counterpart Will Hurd due to a giant blizzard that shut down airlines. The pair livestreamed large chunks of their trip on Facebook Live, answering questions along the way.

So Beto is going to keep being Beto, which is perfectly fine. As long as he stops trying to stream while he’s driving

How Logic’s New Album And Debut Novel Are Connected In Their Own Universe

(Scott Legato/Getty Images)

Logic took a classic split-personality story trope, told it from a first-person point of view, and added welcome snippets of millennial blue-collar existence into it — then he slapped a name on the front: Supermarket. In March, the rapper became the first to have a debut novel top the New York Times Best Sellers list and released a soundtrack to accompany the reader’s journey. But while the soundtrack is a collection of pop songs expounding on the oohs and aahs of young love, Logic used another recent release to go even deeper into Supermarket‘s story.

His fifth studio album, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, arrived this past weekend after a Supermarket-like trailer featuring buckets of blood. As Confessions ventures into the mind of Logic, and therefore, his novel’s protagonist, Flynn, it’s more of a companion to the book than the official soundtrack ever was.

Supermarket follows three characters: protagonist Flynn; his mysterious anarchist coworker, Frank; and his love interest, Mia. Ultimately, the novel is the story of Flynn. But the accompanying soundtrack is a maelstrom of love and lust, seemingly dedicated to Mia — which leaves Logic’s new album and its dark title (possibly a reference to the 2002 film of the same name that chronicles game-show host and fabled CIA “agent” Chuck Barris’s life) to be the word of Frank. Because of that, certain connections between the novel and the album are hard to ignore.

  • Main characters with drastically different personalities

Supermarket has one narrator: Flynn. But Frank often seems to be center of the attention. About halfway through, we find out why: Frank is Flynn. The two are opposites housed into one — Flynn is easygoing, happy, and determined, while Frank is an anarchist, the kind of guy who just wants to watch the world burn.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind treats Logic’s personality as clearly split between Flynn’s two selves. There’s the thoughtful, charismatic, straightforward goof on the title track and “Mama/Show Love,” where he briefly opens up about struggles with emotional health, and then there’s the argumentative instigator who says the controversial statement that doesn’t need to be said on “Clickbait.” These two selves, like Flynn and Frank, exist outside of each other and never come in contact. As Logic’s past work has shown, it’s almost like we’re listening to two different artists on one LP.

  • “Confessions” that echo the protagonist’s own wants

Flynn works at the supermarket because he’s trying to finish writing a book that he got an advance for. But, of course, we learn this isn’t true: He’s actually in a psychiatric hospital reliving the experiences that got him there, and his book, in fact, has already been published. When hit with the news, he’s astounded, but not necessarily excited to reap the fruits of his labor: fame.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind‘s “Wannabe” is about this feeling of fleeting fame, that attaining it is all that matters. “I wanna be famous, I wanna be famous / Why can’t I be famous?” is the song’s literal chorus. It takes what we know about fame and grafts it onto Flynn, but not knowingly. It’s as though the song was made with him in mind, sung from the perspective of someone inside his head, removed from the situation, to speak his truth. Does that sound like anyone in particular?

  • Plot twists and more

Supermarket holds its twist close to the chest. Logic starts the story with a mysterious death from Flynn’s point of view, taking us into the mindset of a man relaxed after a murder. But when the twist is finally revealed, it comes from left field: Flynn struggles with an emotional condition and has an imaginary personality, Frank, who says and carries out his darkest desires.

Confessions pulls a similar turn. While the album’s title suggests an exploration of a complex, misunderstood mind, Confessions is really an LP about the destructive presence of social media. “Clickbait” is the center here, a hyper-focused portrait of faux-perfection online. “I always post that I’m having a good time / So my life looks perfect online,” he raps.

Supermarket and Confessions are such similar creations that they feel as if they’re in conversation with each other. Logic’s recently announced North American tour in support of Confessions will also likely feature material from Supermarket’s soundtrack. If he acknowledges their similarities and shared thematic concepts, it’ll be interesting to see the conversations he continues to generate between the bodies of work.

Sudanese security forces open fire at Khartoum sit-in

Sudanese security forces opened fire in a bid to clear demonstrators from a weeks-long sit-in held outside the army headquarters as negotiations over the make-up of a sovereign council designed to steer the country towards democracy continue.

At least eight people were wounded on Wednesday by gunfire in the capital, Khartoum, a spokesman for the Alliance for Freedom and Change umbrella group wrote on Facebook.

A protest leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP news agency three were in serious condition.

A witness said troops from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fired shots into the air as they moved to clear protesters from the area, which has served as a focal point for demonstrators calling for Sudan’s ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC) to cede power to a civilian-led administration following the overthrow of longtime president Omar Al-Bashir last month.

Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan, reporting from Khartoum, said the violence broke out after RSF forces – whose head is the deputy of the military council – tried to “remove barricades” erected around the protest site but were met with resistance by demonstrators.

“There is lots of tension in front of the army headquarters,” she said, citing earlier violence at the site on Monday that led to at least four deaths.

Ongoing negotiations

The violence came after the TMC announced earlier on Wednesday said after two days of talks it had brokered a deal with the Declaration of Freedom and Change Forces (DFCF) umbrella group on the composition of a legislative council and a three-year transition period to a civilian administration.

Under the agreement the opposition alliance would have two-thirds of the seats on a legislative council, ruling military council member Lieutenant-General Yasser al-Atta told reporters at a press conference.

However, the two sides are yet to agree on the make-up of a sovereign council, the envisaged top tier of power during the planned transition period, with both wanting majority representation.

Final negotiations were to take place on Wednesday evening, according to the military council.

Satea al-Hajj, a Declaration of Freedom and Change Forces member, said: “The viewpoints are close and, God willing, we will reach an agreement soon.”

Violence in Khartoum

Amid the negotiations, protesters pushing for a civilian-led transition have remained in the streets, including outside the army headquarters, where the sit-in started on April 6.

Some roads in the centre of the capital have been blocked with stones, bricks, branches and slabs of concrete that security and paramilitary forces have occasionally tried to remove.

On Monday after security forces opened fire while trying to clear some protest sites, an outburst of violence left at least four people dead, including three protesters and a military police officer. They were the first deaths linked to the protests for several weeks.

Al Jazeera’s Morgan said the TMC denied responsibility for the violence.

“The military council came out and said the people who fired at protesters were not part of their forces or from the RSF,” she said, adding the TMC said it would launch an independent investigation into the incident.

The United States blamed Sudan’s military rulers for the deaths, however.

The tragic attacks on protesters … were clearly the result of the Transitional Military Council trying to impose its will on the protesters by attempting to remove roadblocks,” the US Embassy in Khartoum said in a statement on Facebook.

The decision for security forces to escalate the use of force, including the unnecessary use of tear gas, led directly to the unacceptable violence later in the day that the TMC was unable to control.”

Scores killed

Separately on Monday, Sudan’s prosecutor general announced al-Bashir was charged “with inciting and participating” in the killing of protesters during the mass protests that led to the end of his decades-long rule.

There has been no comment from al-Bashir since his removal and arrest on April 11. The former president is reportedly being held at the maximum security Kobar prison in Khartoum.

Demonstrations against the 75-year-old were sparked by a government decision in December to slash bread and fuel subsidies, but quickly escalated into wider calls for him to stand down.

Human Rights Watch, citing monitoring groups, said last month at least 70 protesters have been killed by government forces since the demonstrations began.

Last week, the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors, a group linked to the protest movement, put the death toll at more than 90.

Kamala Harris: Biden would make ‘great’ vice presidential running mate

poster=”http://bit.ly/2LGV0kR;

true

Some Democrats have previously suggested that Kamala Harris would be a great running mate for Joe Biden.

Sen. Kamala Harris said Wednesday she could envision joining forces with Joe Biden in 2020 — with him as her vice presidential running mate.

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus have split over whether to back the California Democrat or Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), both members of the group, in the Democratic primary, or to support the former vice president, who is popular with CBC members and holds a commanding lead in most polling.

Story Continued Below

That has led members of the group and others to suggest that Biden should pick Harris as his No. 2.

On Wednesday, Harris said she agreed that the two would make a good pair.

“I think that Joe Biden would be a great running mate,” Harris told reporters in New Hampshire. “As vice president, he’s proven that he knows how to do the job.”

“There are certainly a lot of other candidates that would make, for me, would make a very viable and interesting vice president,” she said.

With two older, white men, Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders, leading most polls and a thirst for new blood from progressives, male candidates have been grilled about whether they would commit to having a female running mate. Democrats who want Biden to be the nominee and think he should pick a younger woman or person of color have also floated former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams as a possibility.

Abrams, who is still mulling a run for the White House, has shot down those trial balloons, saying: “I do not believe you run for second place, and I do not intend to enter a presidential race as a primary candidate for vice president.”

Biden also has called talk of his veepstakes nearly eight months out from the Iowa caucuses presumptuous.
