Egypt blackface sketch about Sudanese spotlights racism in region

An Egyptian comedian has sparked anger by using blackface in a sketch and mocking Sudanese people, drawing attention to what experts say is a deeper racism problem in the region.

Speaking what she thought would pass as Sudanese Arabic, Shaimaa Seif, wearing blackface, chatted to Egyptian commuters on a bus as part of a sketch aired on the programme “Sha’labaz”.

The footage was broadcast by the local affiliate of Saudi-funded MBC, one of the largest entertainment channels in the region, and offended many in the Sudanese community who voiced their anger online.

There have been calls to boycott MBC, and the broadcaster has not apologised for the sketch since it was aired on May 10.

“Was this supposed to make us laugh? While you were filming we were protesting with the people,” said Marwa Babiker, a Sudanese doctor with a sizeable social media following.

She was referring to unprecedented mass protests in Sudan that led to the ouster last month of longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir.

Others turned to social media to criticise negative portrayals of Sudanese people, just the latest such incident involving Egyptian entertainers.

Sometimes you ask yourself,no one in the production, filming, marketing team , mentioned that the #blackface is freaking racist and wt she is doing isn’t funny, it’s freaking racist, not even one sane person said that,it’s not a joke it can’t be aired ?? #شيماء_سيف pic.twitter.com/iBOfeuFcwd

In December, Bushra, a well-known actress and singer, released a video clip showing a man in a black mask.

And during Ramadan last year, comedian Samir Ghanem and his daughter sported fake dreadlocks and darkened their skin for a TV series.

Eve Troutt-Powell, a Middle East history professor at the University of Pennsylvania, said blackface has “been a trope in Egyptian entertainment for over a century”.

“There is a larger history at play behind the racist caricatures of black people in Egypt and other parts of the Middle East as well, and that is the history of slavery,” said Troutt-Powell.

Arab traders sold millions of Africans as slaves from the ninth century, a past which continues to impact race relations throughout the Middle East.

The Arabic word for slave, abed, is commonly used as a racial epithet.

There is a huge difference between comedy and cultural inappropriation! next time before you produce such a cheep show GET A CONSULTANT

‘Fixation on skin tone’

Egypt has been bold in its political and economic push towards countries in sub-Saharan Africa, but that has not prevented racist outbursts by its diplomats.

An Egyptian official was in 2016 accused of calling African diplomats “dogs and slaves” at a United Nations conference in Kenya.

Mona Kareem, a research fellow at the Forum Transregionale Studien in Berlin, explained such slurs are rooted in the idea of “blackness as something to fear or ridicule”.

“A fixation on skin tone is only an expression of… racial bias, and does not capture the complexity of the racial experiences that blacks have had in the Arab world,” she told AFP news agency.

“Many of these representations (on television) give voice to already-existent racial images and myths,” Kareem added.

Several human rights groups have criticised pervasive racism and obstacles to local integration for non-Egyptians of African descent in the country, as well as in other Arab nations such as Lebanon.

In Western countries where blackface was a common practice during the 19th and 20th centuries, such as the Netherlands and the United States, incidents of its modern-day usage spark outrage, at least among parts of the nations’ population.

Yet despite vigorous online debates in the Arab world, critics of blackface have not been as effective in changing attitudes towards Arabs of African descent and sub-Saharan Africans.

“It seems, particularly in comedy, that a clear-eyed and heartfelt discussion of political and racial history still needs to take place in Egyptian society,” said Troutt-Powell.

“And it must also continue in other societies.”

New abortion laws set battle lines for 2020

poster=”http://bit.ly/2HmYbKt;

true

2020 elections

The state abortion ban passed in Alabama and other measures in GOP-controlled states have put abortion on the front burner of 2020 issues.

A slew of new state laws effectively outlawing abortion has put the issue front and center in the 2020 elections, with abortion-rights groups hoping the threat galvanizes complacent liberal voters who weren’t moved by the issue in past campaigns.

An Alabama law signed last week that would ban almost all abortions, with no exemptions for victims of rape or incest, is already reverberating in the battle for control of Congress. Democratic lawmakers and abortion-rights groups say they’re seeing a surge of energy in reaction to the news, and they’re working to hammer the message that Republicans could do away with a woman’s right to end her pregnancy.

Story Continued Below

While Democrats warned in 2016 that Donald Trump could remake the Supreme Court and jeopardize abortion rights, the issue resonated more with conservative and religious voters who wanted to see Roe v. Wade struck down. Now that two conservative, Trump-nominated justices have been confirmed to the Supreme Court and states are moving aggressively to pass near-total bans on abortion in order to trigger a court review of Roe, Democrats are hoping voters’ past complacency on reproductive rights issues will be replaced by fiery motivation.

“The threat is real now,” said Rep. Lucy McBath (D-Ga.), who flipped a House seat in Georgia in 2018 as part of a health care-fueled blue wave that gave Democrats control of the lower chamber. “We know that they’re pushing to take this to the Supreme Court and undo everything that’s been done for women’s health care choices. That’s what at stake.”

Democrats hope the issue will drive voters up and down the ballot, starting with the presidential race, and that they can close the intensity gap among voters who cast their ballots with an eye on the Supreme Court. But abortion is likely to be especially critical in Senate races given the chamber’s role in shaping the courts, which will decide the long-term impact of these new laws.

A half-dozen progressive grassroots groups are planning a nationwide day of action later this week to highlight the issue, and Planned Parenthood Votes is launching a six-figure digital ad buy highlighting the Alabama law and targeting female voters in six states where Republican senators are defending their seats.

“I think the chipping away at Roe maybe went under the radar,” said Teresa Tomlinson, a Democrat running to flip a Senate seat in Georgia. “But now it looks like it’s a direct assault on Roe and that’s what caught everybody’s attention.”

Democrats believe the issue will motivate voters in Colorado and Maine especially, the states Trump lost in 2016 that have Republican senators on the ballot in 2020. The majority of the 2020 Senate map, however, falls into red and purple states like Alabama, Georgia, Arizona and North Carolina, where Democrats need to fire up their base without turning off the moderate and Republican-leaning voters they would need to win.

But even Democrats running for reelection in very conservative states are issuing full-throated denunciations of the abortion ban signed this week in Alabama. The law, which is set to go into effect in six months unless courts step in to block it, bans abortions completely, other than an exemption if the life of the mother is in danger. Doctors who perform abortions would be charged with a felony and sentenced to up to 99 years in prison.

“It’s an extreme measure that has no place,” Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.), who faces a tough reelection race next year, said in an interview. “I don’t think the majority of the people in Alabama believe in extreme measures like that.”

GOP Rep. Bradley Byrne, one of Jones’ challengers, tweeted that Jones’ stance is out of touch “with the people of Alabama and our pro-life values,” and told POLITICO: “I stand with the unborn.”

In contrast, many Republicans lawmakers and party leaders have been hesitant to defend the Alabama law, with some dismissing it as a state issue and others voicing discomfort with the lack of exemptions for victims of rape and incest.

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, who could face her strongest Democratic challenge in years after voting to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018, reiterated her belief that federal courts — including a more conservative Supreme Court — would not allow the law to stand.

“I can’t imagine a bill as extreme as Alabama’s new law would be upheld by the courts,” Collins said in a brief interview earlier this week.

Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), who renounced his previous support for an anti-abortion “personhood” measure in his state when he left his safe Republican House district to run statewide in Colorado in 2014, said he hadn’t seen details on the new state legislation, adding: “I’m pro-life, but that’s up to the states.”

Democrats running against Gardner attacked him nevertheless: Two candidates. Dan Baer and Andrew Romanoff, sent out fundraising emails soliciting donations to abortion-rights groups, and Romanoff called the Alabama bill an “unconscionable attack on women.” Jena Griswold, the Democratic secretary of state who is considering running for Senate, said she would not authorize spending of state resources for travel to Alabama.

Meanwhile, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) called it an “Alabama state issue.” Sen. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.) said she was “focused on my work here,” dismissing a question about the legal challenge to Roe v. Wade the law could pose. And Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) also said he hadn’t looked at the details of the Alabama legislation, but cautioned his party against making the election about a “divisive issue” like abortion, instead of about “results” on jobs and the economy.

But Republicans insist that they aren’t concerned about the politics of abortion going into 2020. They argue Democrats’ abortion rights views have become increasingly extreme and believe Democrats rallying around abortion rights will backfire in swing and red-leaning states next fall.

“It’s going to be a big issue, and my general view is the Republican Party is where it has always been and where it ought to be: Solidly pro-life,” said Scott Jennings, a veteran GOP strategist and former aide to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. “The [Democratic] Party has gone to the left and people just can’t stomach the fringe positions they’re taking.”

The bills passed this year in Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi and Ohio ban abortion six weeks into a woman’s pregnancy — the time at which a fetal heartbeat can usually be detected, and a time at which the majority of women do not know they are pregnant. Missouri’s bill, which now awaits the governor’s signature, would ban abortions after eight weeks.

None of the laws have taken effect. Federal courts have blocked Kentucky’s and Iowa’s abortion bans for now. Legal challenges are pending in Ohio, and groups plan to sue to stop the laws’ implementation in the remaining states.

A 2018 Gallup poll found that 60 percent of Americans think first trimester abortions should generally be legal and 64 percent do not support overturning Roe vs. Wade, which the six-week bans and Alabama’s near-total ban aim to do. Seventy-seven percent support exemptions for victims of rape and incest.

Given the political peril of the total abortion bans, some Republican candidates and advocacy groups are working to keep the focus on the question of taxpayer funding for abortions and bans on abortions late in a woman’s pregnancy — areas where public opinion is more closely divided. Sen. David Perdue of Georgia said he supported the six-week abortion ban just enacted in his state and questioned a law passed by Democrats in New York State.

“Why are we talking about that law versus the infanticide law that was praised by the governor in New York?” Perdue said.

Celinda Lake, a veteran Democratic pollster, said she moderated focus groups in 2016 in which suburban voters were “highly skeptical” that Trump represented a serious threat to abortion rights. She expects that to change next year.

“The Supreme Court goes both ways,” Lake said. “It’s a way to energize the right wing base but it’s a way to energize mainstream America too.”

A security researcher has uncovered a flaw in Slack that could’ve been exploited to steal files over the business messaging app and potentially spread malware.

The flaw involves Slack’s Windows desktop app, and how it can automatically send downloaded files to a certain destination—whether it be on your PC or to an online storage server. You can set a download location in the app’s preferences section. However, David Wells, a researcher at the security firm Tenable, noticed there’s another way to configure the option: Via a special link.

“Crafting a link like ‘slack://settings/?update={‘PrefSSBFileDownloadPath’:‘}’ would change the default download location if clicked,” Wells wrote in a blog post on the vulnerability.

Wells realized the same function could be abused. Imagine a hacker using the links to secretly reconfigure a Slack desktop app to send all downloaded files to an outside server. “Using this attack vector, an insider could exploit this vulnerability for corporate espionage, manipulation, or to gain access to documents outside of their purview,” Well’s security firm Tenable said in a separate report.

Image: david wells / medium / screenshot

The vulnerability can also pave the way for potential malware infections. Any downloaded files sent to the hacker-controller server can be altered and booby-trapped to include malicious code. The attack will commence once the victim opens the file on the Slack desktop app.

The main obstacle of carrying out this attack is circulating the hacker-created links to people on Slack, which keeps its channels private to paying clients and their companies. To pull this off, Wells noticed how Slack channels can be configured to subscribe to RSS feeds, including threads on Reddit.

“I could make a post to a very popular Reddit community that Slack users around the world are subscribed to,” Wells said. The hacker-created link will then populate inside the Slack channel and possibly attract some clicks.

“This technique could be unmasked by savvy Slack users, however if decades of phishing campaigns have taught us anything, it’s that users click links, and when leveraged through an untrusted RSS feed, the impact can get much more interesting,” he added.

Slack has patched the flaw in version 3.4.0 of the Windows desktop app. “We investigated and found no indication that this vulnerability was ever utilized, nor reports that our users were impacted,” the company said in an email.

N Korea demands UN action over ship seizure by ‘gangster’ US

N Korea demands UN action over ship seizure by 'gangster' US
The Wise Honest is one of North Korea’s largest bulk carriers [Reuters]

North Korea has demanded the United Nations take “urgent measures” to help return a cargo ship taken by the United States, calling the seizure a “heinous” act.

Washington announced last week it had taken possession of the North Korean-registered bulk carrier M/V Wise Honest – a year after it was detained in Indonesia – citing sanctions-violating activities.

“This act of dispossession has clearly indicated that the United States is indeed a gangster country that does not care at all about international laws,” the North Korean ambassador to the UN said in a letter sent to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres dated Friday, according to North Korea’s KCNA news agency.

Earlier this week, Pyongyang had slammed the seizure as an “outright denial” of the spirit of a statement signed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump at their first summit in Singapore last year.

The US Justice Department said the North Korean cargo ship was seized and impounded to American Samoa. The vessel was accused of illicit coal shipments in violation of sanctions.

The ship was first confiscated by other foreign maritime authorities in Indonesia in April 2018.

The 17,000-tonne ship, which was also used to deliver heavy machinery to North Korea, is one of the country’s largest bulk carriers, the Justice Department said.

The case marks the first time the US has seized a North Korean cargo vessel for violating sanctions.

The seizure came amid heightened tensions after Pyongyang conducted weapons drills involving short-range missiles in recent weeks, and with nuclear talks deadlocked since the collapse of the Hanoi summit between Trump and Kim earlier this year.

With the denuclearisation talks stalled, North Korea went ahead with more weapons tests this month. The tests were seen as a protest by Kim after Trump rejected his calls for sanctions relief at the Hanoi summit.

North Korea is sanctioned under multiple UN Security Council resolutions for its nuclear and missile programmes, and lifting of some of the measures was a key demand from Pyongyang at the second Trump-Kim summit in February that ultimately broke down without a deal.

Syria says missiles fired from Israeli-held territory at Damascus

Syrian state media reported air defenses brought down objects and did not report casualties [File: SANA/AFP]
Syrian state media reported air defenses brought down objects and did not report casualties [File: SANA/AFP]

Syrian air defences have targeted projectiles coming from “occupied territory”, a reference to Israel and the Palestinian territories, and brought some of them down, Syrian state television reported.

Loud blasts echoed across Damascus late on Friday, residents said, shortly before the television news bulletin that reported the incident.

SANA, Syria’s state news agency, quoted a Syrian military source who said that the air defence system was activated against missiles fired at western Damascus from the direction of Quneitra, in the occupied Golan Heights.

The state television channel also showed footage of the night sky with a point of light firing up into it and the sound of shooting, and reported that air defenses had brought down some objects. It did not immediately report casualties or material damage.

Last month, three Syrian government fighters were wounded in Israeli raids on military positions in the city of Musayaf in the province of Hama late last month.

Syrian military sources said at the time that the Israeli aircraft had carried out raids from Lebanese airspace.

The Israeli military does not usually comment on reports concerning its air attacks in neighbouring Syria though it has recently acknowledged hitting what Tel Aviv claims are Iranian targets in Syria.

Since the civil war started, Israel has carried out scores of military air bombings in Syria against suspected arms transfers and deployments by Iranian forces and their Lebanese Hezbollah allies which are backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Kawhi Leonard, Toronto Raptors Have Gone from Over The Moon to Overwhelmed

MILWAUKEE, WI - MAY 17: Kawhi Leonard #2 of the Toronto Raptors looks on against the Milwaukee Bucks during Game Two of the Eastern Conference Finals on May 17, 2019 at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It’s been less than a week since Kawhi Leonard hit the biggest shot in Toronto Raptors history, a fallaway from the corner that bounced on the rim four times before falling through and becoming the first Game 7, winner-take-all buzzer beater in NBA history.

Two games later, the Raptors are down 0-2 to the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks. For stretches of the 125-103 Game 2 loss, they looked helpless, particularly against MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo.

With just under six minutes to play, Antetokounmpo powered through three Raptors for an and-one. Milwaukee faithful chanted “MVP!” as he nailed the free throw, extended the lead to 18 and shut the door on a mini-run by the Raptors. He finished the game with 30 points, 17 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal.

    NBA on TNT @NBAonTNT

The Greek Freak (30 PTS, 17 REB) had his way in the @Bucks’ Game 2 win! 💪🇬🇷

    #FearTheDeer | #NBAPlayoffs https://t.co/b6ad0AbXCp

Despite several small surges from Toronto during the second half on Friday, Game 2 provided precious little hope for Raptors fans just five days removed from witnessing Kawhi’s season-saving shot. Leonard continued his ludicrous run through the 2019 postseason, scoring 31 points on 10-of-18 shooting, but the rest of the team was 27-of-69 (39.1 percent). Toronto starters not named Kawhi went 11-of-37 (29.7 percent).

To beat a team as good as the Bucks—who just had the 29th-best regular season in NBA history, according to simple rating system—the North will need significantly better production.

In 2017-18, Toronto had eight players with at least 500 minutes and an above-average box plus-minus. Only the Golden State Warriors had more. It was depth that made the Raptors so good last season. And four of those players were dealt elsewhere since the end of the 2018 playoffs.

Jonas Valanciunas, Delon Wright, Jakob Poeltl and, of course, DeMar DeRozan are all gone. Marc Gasol and Leonard are in their place. Obviously, that’s a trade-off that just about any front office in the league would make. But now, in the Eastern Conference Finals, Toronto looks overwhelmed against a deeper team.

Leonard has been doing his part. Gasol has to be better.

“I played really bad,” Gasol told reporters after the game. “And that set the tone.”

After going 1-of-9 from the field in Game 2, Gasol (acquired in exchange for Valanciunas and Wright) is now 3-of-20 in this series. He’s a minus-13, and it’s about more than missing shots. In Game 1, he at least had 12 boards and five assists. His five rebounds and one dime on Friday did little to move the needle.

His frontcourt partner hasn’t been much better. After a breakout regular season, Pascal Siakam is being outplayed by Bucks backup forward Ersan Ilyasova. Yes, Ersan Ilyasova.

Since November I’ve been worried Ersan would be unplayable against Toronto if these teams met in the playoffs,” Brew Hoops’s Frank Madden tweeted. “Two games in, Ersan has not just been playable — he’s somehow also outplayed Siakam. Big, big kudos to Ersan.”

Like Gasol, Siakam has been terrible from the field. He’s now 10-of-29 for the series, this after averaging over 20 in the postseason prior to this matchup. And to make matters worse, foul trouble limited him to 26 minutes in Game 2.

“It didn’t look like it tonight,” Siakam said of being nominated for Most Improved Player prior to the game, per TSN’s Josh Lewenberg. “I’ve gotta be more aggressive, I’ve gotta do a better job, I’ve gotta be better.”

It may sound reductive to simply say guys need to make more shots for Toronto, but that’s clearly been an issue for them. Against the length and athleticism of Milwaukee, you have to take advantage of the decent looks you get.

The bigger picture here is that the Raptors just may not have the firepower they need to beat the Bucks. They played about as well as they could for the first three quarters of Game 1 and still managed to lose.

Milwaukee looks like a juggernaut. And not just in this series. Over the course of the postseason, the Bucks are destroying Vegas’ lines, per John Ewing of The Action Network:

    John Ewing @johnewing

.@Bucks are 10-1 ATS in the playoffs, covering by 7.5 points per game.

    https://t.co/K2f7rS6UB0

They have perhaps the game’s best player in Giannis, surrounded by seven or eight guys who’ve been solid throughout the playoffs.

Toronto, meanwhile, has looked like a one-man show for stretches. And while it’s a good one, Leonard needs more help to upend Milwaukee.

With his team needing to win four out of the next five to avoid elimination, that thought may be creeping into Kawhi’s head too. Bucks fans certainly tried to plant it there on Friday:

    Bleacher Report @BleacherReport

    🗣 “LA’s calling”

Milwaukee trying to send Kawhi back to SoCal https://t.co/4XG6M70mpJ

The Los Angeles Clippers have just under $50 million in salary guaranteed for next season. The cap is projected to be $109 million. That’s enough room for L.A.’s own Kawhi to sign there and add plenty of help around him. If the Clips can find a taker for the $22.6 million Danilo Gallinari is owed in 2019-20, they can get real aggressive.

A team with Kawhi, Lou Williams, Montrezl Harrell, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Landry Shamet, and oh, say Jimmy Butler (?) would be pretty scary, right? And L.A. is the kind of market Leonard was reportedly after when things broke down between him and the San Antonio Spurs.

And the Clippers aren’t the only big-city franchise poised to go after big names this summer. The New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets will both have significant cap space. And though rumors floated around this season about young players not wanting to join LeBron James, that team still screams folklore.

Leonard is from Los Angeles. And he grew up there in the 90s and early 2000s. Kobe Bryant and Shaquille won their first of three consecutive titles for the historic franchise just before Leonard’s ninth birthday. If the heartstrings have any say in the matter, the Lakers may still be in play.

With all those options potentially in front of him, will Leonard want to re-up with the North right after being dismantled by Milwaukee?

He’s provided plenty of excitement in one season with this organization. On top of the buzzer beater, he posted the sixth-best single-season box plus-minus in Raptors history. If he maintains his current level of play, he will comfortably put up the best playoff box plus-minus the team has ever had.

But time may already be running out on this player-team relationship. Even with someone as good as Kawhi, the Raptors look outmatched.

And if their best player leaves, Toronto may have to go back to the drawing board. Sure, Siakam will still be there. And he should be better. But Serge Ibaka, Gasol and Lowry will all be a year older. Fred VanVleet doesn’t look quite as promising as he did a year ago. Same might go for OG Anunoby. And even without Leonard on the books, the Raptors won’t have much, if any, flexibility with the salary cap.

That’s the risk general manager Masai Ujiri took when he dealt DeRozan, the face of the franchise, and Poeltl, a key cog in an intriguing young core, for Leonard.

The trade made sense because of the potential reward, but Giannis and the Bucks may be holding it at a (long)-arm’s length away.

Kyle Lowry had a night to forget, shooting 4-of-13 for 15 points.

Brogdon, Mirotic Can Help Bucks Dethrone Warriors

Last year’s playoffs illustrated the Bucks’ limitations when Antetokounmpo and Middleton basically have to do everything themselves. Antetokounmpo averaged 25.7 points, 9.6 rebounds and 6.3 assists, while Middleton averaged 24.7 points and shot 61 percent from three.

Their contributions couldn’t prevent a first-round exit to a more balanced Boston Celtics squad.

Going from Joe Prunty to Mike Budenholzer at head coach obviously had an impact, but this year’s postseason has shown how much stronger the Bucks are across the board. In the second round, George Hill exploded for 52 points in the final three games of the series. Brook Lopez was instrumental in Milwaukee’s Game 1 over Toronto, with 29 points and four blocks.

On Friday night, the trio of Malcolm Brogdon, Nikola Mirotic and Ersan Ilyasova collectively stepped up make the Raptors miserable. They scored 46 points together and shot 7-of-18 from the perimeter.

    Steve Aschburner @AschNBA

Milwaukee is happy to have Giannis and Kawhi cancel out each other with 11 points each in the 1H … as long as the other three guys scoring in dbl figures are all Bucks. Mirotic, Ilyasova 15p each, Brogdon 12.

    Lowry 6p 4f. Raptors 8 t/overs, Bucks 2.

In a possible Finals matchup with the Golden State Warriors, the Bucks would clearly need Antetokounmpo and Middleton to lead the way. In order to actually beat the Warriors, Milwaukee’s supporting cast would need to continue delivering as it has throughout the postseason.

Brogdon and Mirotic should be particularly vital. Brogdon is one of the team’s best perimeter defenders and would thus would probably draw Klay Thompson when he’s on the floor. Mirotic is responsible for helping space the floor for Antetokounmpo and providing an outlet when the Warriors crowd the Greek Freak.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr told reporters it’s unclear how long Kevin Durant might be out with his calf strain, per ESPN.com’s Nick Friedell. If Durant’s injury continues to linger into the Finals, then a deeper Bucks roster will push Golden State to the limit in a seven-game series.

    Raptors Facing Bleak Future

Leonard’s Game 7 buzzer-beater against the Philadelphia 76ers already feels like a lifetime ago.

On that night, anything seemed possible. The Raptors could roll through the Bucks en route to the Finals. Leonard could re-sign with Toronto, extending the franchise’s championship window for the foreseeable future.

Friday night was a reality check for the Raptors. Toronto is two games away from a playoff exit and an offseason that could radically alter the team’s long-term direction.

Bucks fans weren’t above trolling their Canadian counterparts about Leonard’s impending free agency—assuming he opts out of his contract.

Independent of Leonard’s decision, going through the Eastern Conference won’t get any easier in 2020.

As soon as the Raptors watch LeBron James head westward, they see Antetokounmpo essentially become the same kind of singular challenge to overcome in the playoffs. And Antetokounmpo is still 24, so he’s only approaching his prime playing years.

The 76ers, too, should be improved with a full season of Jimmy Butler and Tobias Harris if they decide to run things back next season. The Boston Celtics might benefit from a return to legitimate team chemistry if Kyrie Irving decides to opt out this summer. The New York Knicks would look a lot different if they can land Irving and/or Kevin Durant in free agency.

Even if they stand pat and retain all of their best players, the Raptors are bound to have a higher level of competition in the East.

Take Leonard out of the mix and things get pretty dark. The Raptors’ lack of depth behind Leonard has been clear throughout the playoffs.

    Vincent Goodwill @VinceGoodwill

Bucks fans chanting, “Playoff Lowry” while Kyle Lowry was at the foul line. The cruelty

In general, it’s way too early to consider a complete teardown. But fans may be seeing the end of the Raptors’ run as a title threat without a complete roster overhaul.

    What’s Next?

The series moves to Toronto for Game 3 on Sunday, with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. While not an elimination game, it’s effectively a must-win situation for the Raptors. Falling behind 3-0 to the top-seeded Bucks would be an almost impossible mountain to climb.
