World of Warcraft Classic is meant to take fans of Blizzard’s hit MMORPG back to simpler times. But memory, as it turns out, is a funny thing.
The new-old WoW — Classic restores to the MMO many of the rules and systems that defined its 2005 release — isn’t set to launch until the summer, but players are participating in the closed beta test now. And an apparently not-insignificant number of them are running into issues that they’re reporting as bugs.
There’s just one problem: some of those bugs are actually features.
It’s hard to say how many people are making the mistake when Classic isn’t even out yet. But the number is apparently large enough that Blizzard felt it necessary to run down a bunch of actual WoW features in a “Not A Bug” list posted to the Blizzard forums.
The intro here kinda says it all: “As we’ve discussed before, the nature of WoW Classic sometimes invokes different memories for different players, and this leads to certain misconceptions for some about what is or isn’t working as intended.”
If you are playing WoW Classic right now, or you’re eagerly awaiting the summer launch, here’s a rundown of everything in the game right now that is definitely 100 percent not a bug.
* Tauren’s hitboxes and their melee reach is slightly larger than other races. * Being critically struck while using /sit to sit does not cause abilities like Enrage, Blood Craze, and Reckoning to activate. * Using the “Automatic Quest Tracking” option does not auto-track newly accepted quests. (It instead will start to track an existing quest once progress towards an objective is started.) * Warrior health Regeneration is working at the expected rate. * Quests objectives and points of interests are not tracked on the map or minimap. * Completed quests are marked on the minimap with a dot. (and not a “?”) * Feared players and NPCs run fast. * Standing on top of other players while facing away allows spells and attacks to be used. * Creature respawn rates are much slower than in Battle for Azeroth. * NPCs which offer multiple quests may inconsistently display them as a dot or a “!” on the available quests list. They were inconsistent in 1.12, and we’ve reproduced the exact inconsistency they had back then. * Quests that are too low level for do not show up as a “!” in the game world. * Available quests do not display a “!” on the minimap. * On level up, the message: “Your skill in Protection increased to 15” was added in 1.12.1, and we’re intending to keep that.
Some of these might read to you like they should be bugs. The above “not a bug” list even notes at one point that “we’ve reproduced the exact inconsistency [from] back then.” Part of the appeal here is bringing players back to the original game they remember, quirks and all.
WoW Classic is expected to go live for all players on Aug. 27, 2019.
Former Vice President Joe Biden has officially launched his bid for the US presidency in a ceremony in his home state of Pennsylvania, embracing a message of unity that he said would ultimately help defeat President Donald Trump.
Speaking to a crowd in Philadelphia to kick off his 2020 campaign, the 76-year-old – who served as President Barack Obama‘s right hand man for two terms – offered a call for bipartisan unity that seemed far more aimed at a general election audience than the fiery Democratic activists most active in the presidential primary process.
Biden made Trump his central target, blasting him as “the divider-in-chief”.
He chided other Democratic presidential candidates in the field, suggesting that anger towards Trump within his party was not enough to win the presidential election next year.
“Some of the really smart folks say Democrats don’t want to hear about unity,” he said. “They say Democrats are so angry, and that the angrier your campaign will be, the better chance you have to win the Democratic nomination. Well, I don’t believe it.”
“If the American people want a president to add to our division, to lead with a clenched fist, closed hand, a hard heart, to demonize the opponents and spew hatred – they don’t need me, they’ve got President Donald Trump.”
He announced his decision to run for the presidency on April 25 with an online video and climbed to the front of the crowded primary field, in part by highlighting his ability to compete with Trump in potentially make-or-break states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.
His campaign headquarters are in Philadelphia.
‘Won’t speak ill of another Democrat’
Al Jazeera’s Gabriel Elizondo, reporting from Washington DC, said the decision to launch his campaign from Pennsylvania was deeply symbolic.
“Biden is from Pennsylvania, he’s very well liked there and the latest polls there show that he is leading Trump in the state of Pennsylvania by more than 10 points,” said Elizondo.
“Make no mistake, he’s in Pennsylvania because Pennsylvanians could very well decide who the next president is going to be.”
“In 2016, Donald Trump just narrowly beat Hillary Clinton in the state of Pennsylvania by less than one percent and those 20 electoral votes for Pennsylvania really are what put Trump over the top.”
Elizondo said that Biden emphasised his near 40-years of experience in politics made him the candidate best positioned to take on Trump and bring a divided Washington together to resolve issues ranging from the economy to climate change.
Democratic nominating contests begin next February, giving the dynamics of the race plenty of time to shift. But Biden, has opened up a more than 20-point lead over his nearest rival, US Senator Bernie Sanders, in several public opinion polls.
Prior to Biden’s speech, the Republican National Committee in a release pointed to statistics showing how Pennsylvania’s economy has improved during Trump’s presidency.
Biden will not likely have the luxury of shrugging off the rest of the Democratic field much longer.
In recent weeks, he has been criticised by Senator Kamala Harris for his past support for the 1994 crime bill that critics say led to mass incarceration of African-Americans, by Sanders for his support of the North American Free Trade Agreement, and by Senator Elizabeth Warren for his ties to the credit-card industry.
With Biden the clear frontrunner, those attacks are likely to intensify. But Biden on Saturday said he would keep his focus on Trump and not his rivals for the nomination.
“You will not hear me speak ill of another Democrat,” Biden said.
HBO’s Games of Thrones finally and truly ends on Sunday, May 19.
The hotly anticipated series finale airs on May 19, and fans around the world are busy losing their collective sh*t in response to the “controversial” season. Comedian and rocker Jack Black, however, is taking a different approach. Specifically, he’s scatting the show’s theme song.
In a May 17 video, starting around the 35-second mark, Black “sings”(?) the show’s distinctive opening number while swinging a sword, drinking coffee, and proudly showing off his nipples. Standard Black stuff, really.
Did you catch the Lady Gaga concert that took place on May 17?
Unless you work out of Apple Park, the tech giant’s massive spaceship-shaped headquarters in Cupertino, you probably didn’t attend.
The singer and actress performed a special private concert for Apple employees on Friday to help formally open the campus as well as pay tribute to Steve Jobs, according MacRumors. The concert took place on a Jony Ive-designed stage, decked with a rainbow arch, inside of Apple Park’s ring.
According to AppleWeb (via Cult of Mac), the tech giant’s own intranet, the “Apple Stage” as it’s called, the platform and rainbow structure are made of some 25,000 parts, including an aluminum frame (because of course it is), and is designed to for quick assembly and deconstruction.
For the stage’s first event, Apple decked out various parts of the campus with rainbow-colored decorations as a throwback to the company multi-colored logo back in the early days.
As seen on social media, some stairways got the rainbow treatment:
And Apple had rainbow-colored coffee cups:
Employees also received these stylish retro Apple logo pins, thanking them for being a part of the company:
But, of course, the real star was Lady Gaga. She performed several of her hit songs including “Shallow,” “Poker Face,” and “Born This Way.”
If nothing else, she made one valid point: The iPod got smaller and smaller, but why is the iPhone getting bigger?
“What I would love is for it to be like surgically implanted into my hand,” Gaga said.
The Eurovision Song Contest finals got under way in Tel Aviv, as Israeli police threw a high-security cordon around the venue, amid pro-Palestinian protests urging fans to shun the event.
Armed police stood at elevated positions around the Expo Tel Aviv complex on Saturday night, with patrol cars and police motorcyclists at junctions as fans passed through metal detectors and multiple security checks.
Pro-Palestinian groups including the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement have called on artists and the public to stay away from the 41-country international singing competition to protest against Israeli policies and human rights breaches in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.
No finalists or broadcasters have pulled out, but the organisers put security inside the hall in case activists try to disrupt the live televised final or performers hold an on-stage protest.
Al Jazeera’s Harry Fawcett, reporting from a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Tel Aviv, said that there had been regular protests and online campaigns against the event by pro-Palestinian groups, adding that Israel was trying hard to counter them.
He said: “Protesters’ point of view is that this event should not happen here at all. Attending Eurovision or supporting Eurovision is supporting Israel and its desire to divert attention from the realities of the occupation by portraying Tel Aviv as a liberal place.”
Madonna controversy
Pop star Madonna arrived in Israel earlier in the week, ahead of her planned guest performance.
Defending her decision to take part, the 60-year-old singer issued a statement saying she hoped to see “a new path towards peace”.
In a statement carried by US media earlier this week, Madonna said: “I’ll never stop playing music to suit someone’s political agenda nor will I stop speaking out against violations of human rights wherever in the world they may be.”
At an event organised by pro-Palestinian activists on Saturday morning, around 60 people boarded a boat in Jaffa port to hear critics voicing opposition to Israel’s staging of the competition.
Some campaigners wore shirts saying “Eurovision: I’m not your Toy”, a play on the song “Toy” by the Israeli singer Netta Barzilai, whose win at last year’s competition brought the 2019 finals to Israel.
The event was organised by Zochrot, an Israeli NGO which advocates for Palestinians to have the right to return to lands that they fled or were driven from during the 1948-49 war that surrounded Israel’s founding. Israel rules out any such right.
In addition, Palestinians are running a simultaneous alternative event dubbed “Globalvision”.
Parties are set to take place in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, Haifa in northern Israel, home to a significant Arab population, as well as London and Dublin.

Tensions eased
A recent escalation of tensions between Israel and Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, appears to have cooled going into the Eurovision finals.
Organisers of weekly protests along the Gaza-Israel border on Friday cancelled a demonstration for only the second time in more than a year.
The Palestinian protesters demand an end to Israel’s more than decade-old blockade of Gaza and the right for Palestinian refugees to return to ancestral lands now inside the Jewish state.
At least 305 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the protests began, the majority during the protests, according to the spokesman for the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry while six Israelis have been killed in Gaza-related violence over the same time period.
Eurovision, a largely European competition that gifted the Swedish renowned group ABBA to the world, dates back to the 1950s.
Widening over the years to include channels subscribing to the European Broadcasting Union, and now spreading as far as Australia, the show lures in millions every year.
The Netherlands’ Duncan Laurence is the bookies’ favourite to win the glass microphone trophy in 2019.
While attending a jump rope competition in Johannesburg, South Africa, the former body pro bodybuilder, actor, and governor of California was dropkicked in the back by an unidentified attacker while he was in the middle of filming a video for his Snapchat account.
Now, most people would’ve turned around to see WTF hit them, but not Schwarzenegger. The guy’s so buff he didn’t even realize someone had dropkicked him at first.
In a video posted to YouTube (skip to 0:56), the attacker, clad in a dark sweatshirt and gray sweatpants, is seen launching a flying kick right into Schwarzenegger’s back.
It’s unclear what the motive was for the attack. Security immediately rushed over to detain the attacker as he yelled for help, but it’s hard to make out what he was saying.
And if you have to share the video (I get it), pick a blurry one without whatever he was yelling so he doesn’t get the spotlight.
Schwarzenegger let out a pained cry as he absorbed the impact, but apparently he didn’t even realize what had happened until later. Schwarzenegger says he thought he had been “jostled by the crowd, which happens a lot.”
He only later found out he was kicked in the back when he saw a video of the attack online.
Thanks for your concerns, but there is nothing to worry about. I thought I was just jostled by the crowd, which happens a lot. I only realized I was kicked when I saw the video like all of you. I’m just glad the idiot didn’t interrupt my Snapchat.
In a tweet, Schwarzenegger reassured followers he was okay and “there is nothing to worry about” before capping it off with “I’m just glad the idiot didn’t interrupt my Snapchat.”
Man, imagine how pissed Schwarzenegger would’ve been if the guy had messed with his Snapchat. Would he have just snapped the guy in half? That’s probably too extreme, but not totally out of the question considering he was the Terminator.
Schwarzenegger urged his followers to not re-share the video and give attention to the attacker “who wants to be famous.” Instead, he’d much prefer fans support the young athletes who are a part of his Arnold Sports Festival and are helping to spread the benefits of fitness to everyone.
Do me a favor: instead of sharing the video of the guy who wants to be famous, watch some of our @ArnoldSports athletes like this young hero proving that fitness is for everyone who deserve to be famous. They’re on my Snapchat. pic.twitter.com/EuMynJ7t1n
Never get between bargain hunters and their discounted designer beachwear.
Target shoppers across the country found that out the hard way Saturday, when many rolled up to their favorite big box store only to find a giant line. That’s right, a line to enter a Target. And what, exactly, was the reason for this shopping fervor?
That would be the limited edition Vineyard Vines collection.
The one day I come after work to Target for in-store pickup, would be the day of Target’s Vineyard Vines launch.
I have never seen so many white people elbowing each other for beach towels and t-shirts.
I roll upbto targer to get a broom and checkout the seasonal Oreo selection and no bullshit, there was a line there 30 min before opening, all people waiting for the introduction of vineyard vines in the store, there is currently a frenzy in the section pic.twitter.com/bOU2gIeHuM
A video shows the polite rush into one Target store as shoppers want to be the first to get, I guess, shirts with whale drawings on them and novelty mugs?
At the @Target vineyard vines launch and within a second upon entering this girl swooped with her arm an entire section into her cart lmao
Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (left) called for an election to be held ‘as soon as possible’ in the wake of Strache’s (right) resignation [File: Leonhard Foeger/Reuters]
Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has called for the country to hold fresh elections following the resignation of his scandal-hit deputy, Heinz-Christian Strache.
Kurz on Saturday said a vote should be held “as soon as possible” hours after Strache, the vice chancellor and leader of the far-right Freedom Party (FPO), resigned and plunged Austria’s politics into crisis mode.
Kurz, who heads the centre-right People’s Party and leads Austria’s coalition government, said he had made his position known to Austria’s president.
“After yesterday’s video, I must say quite honestly: Enough is enough,” he added.
The political turmoil erupted on Friday after Strache was shown in a sting video meeting a woman posing as the niece of a Russian oligarch in 2017, shortly before the election that brought him to power as part of the FPO-People’s Party coalition administration.
In the footage – aired by the German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung and weekly Der Spiegel newspapers – the far-right Strache was seen offering state contracts in exchange for political and financial backing.
Addressing reporters during his resignation speech on Saturday, Strache said: “It was dumb, it was irresponsible and it was a mistake.”
He maintained, however, that he had done nothing illegal and described the sting as a “targeted political assassination”.
Opposition parties including the Social Democrats, the liberal Neos party and the Greens called for a new election in the wake of his resignation.
Former Vice President Joe Biden speaks at a campaign rally in April 2019 in Pittsburgh. A survey of Pennsylvania voters found that Biden out-polled President Donald Trump 53 percent to 42 percent. | Jeff Swensen/Getty Images
The former vice president’s 2020 campaign kickoff rally in Philadelphia, where he is opening his campaign headquarters, highlighted ties to the state where he was born — and a state critical to the general election.
PHILADELPHIA — Joe Biden is betting on Pennsylvania.
He was born in Scranton, earned the nickname of “Pennsylvania’s third senator” while serving in the Senate, and will base his campaign headquarters in Philadelphia.
Story Continued Below
As he capped a three-week campaign launch tour with a rally Saturday in Philadelphia, Biden said he chose to be here for a reason.
“Why do we begin in this place, Philadelphia?” Biden asked a crowd of thousands of supporters. “This was the birthplace of our democracy.”
If Biden were to become the Democratic nominee for president, Pennsylvania could be crucial in taking back the White House from Republicans. President Donald Trump narrowly won Pennsylvania in 2016, a feat that helped him smash through the Democratic “blue wall” in industrial states and secure a majority of electoral college votes.
The former vice president is quickly making inroads here. He not only is headquartered in Philadelphia, but made his first official campaign appearance at a union hall in Pittsburgh and hosted a big-donor fundraiser in Philadelphia.
Biden recited the famous words from the Declaration of Independence, “we hold these truths to be self-evident,” words he said served as a foundation for the American ideals of equality, equity and fairness.
“America didn’t live up to that promise for most of the people, for people of color, for women,” Biden said. “But we are born of an idea that every single solitary person in this country — given half a chance no matter where you start in life — there is not a single thing they cannot do if they work at it.”
Early polls are also showing that Biden would beat Trump here in a hypothetical 2020 match-up. In a survey of Pennsylvania voters, Quinnipiac University found that Biden out-polled Trump 53 percent to 42 percent. About 60 percent of registered Democrats in Pennsylvania say that Biden has the best chance of beating Trump, followed by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, at 6 percent.
In his remarks, Biden characterized himself as a foil to the current president.
“If the American people want a president to add to our division, to lead with a clenched fist, closed hand and a hard heart, to demonize the opponents and spew hatred — they don’t need me. They already have a President who does just that,” Biden said. “I am running to offer our country — Democrats, Republicans and independents — a different path.”
But it’s a message of unity that Biden is banking on to serve as his ticket to the White House.
“Some say Democrats don’t want to hear about unity. That they are angry, and the angrier you are, the better,” Biden said. “Well, I don’t believe it. I really don’t. I believe Democrats want to unify this nation.”
Even though he’s only technically been in the race for a few weeks, Biden has already broken far away from the pack of the 22 other candidates who have declared they are running for the Democratic nomination.
Biden’s strong name recognition has helped him lead in every national poll taken since he announced his candidacy in April. He’s also established wide early-state leads in New Hampshire and South Carolina, while lapping up endorsements.
Instead of opening us up to new, previously unimaginable forms of self-pleasure, for the most part its nascent existence has been little more than an extension of the clichés we’ve come to expect from Tube sites. Whether it’s the rote 360 3D VR porn made most accessible through sites like Pornhub, or the more interactive adult VR games about customizing your own virtual sex doll — many criticize VR porn for being even more limited to the cis, heteronormative male gaze than regular porn.
But that’s finally beginning to change.
“In the early days there was a concern that, if there’s only a handful of people making content, they’ll only make content that appeals to them or who they envision their consumers to be,” said Ela Darling, a pioneer in the VR porn space as a performer as well as CMO of adult-only VR platform PVR and its IRIS headset. “But now there are more and more newcomers making diverse content, because the tech’s finally making it more accessible to create.”
As it turns out, there are untold, untapped possibilities for VR to transform the way we masturbate. And while the same problems from years ago remain, a new swath of VR porn is delivering on the medium’s greatest promises, allowing for more intimacy between player and porn viewer, embodied experiences, better storytelling, and virtual explorations of kink.
From the impressive furry VR game Yiffalicious or innovatively kinky Dominatrix Simulator, some of the most popular virtual reality adult games are being made by small teams of indie designers sustained through niche, yet dedicated, Patreon communities. In the realm of live-action performances, PVR is about to launch a novel series of ASMR VR porn, with a gender-neutral design focused on sensorial experiences.
“What’s most important to creating engaging adult content in VR is not a perfect pair of boobs you can play with. It’s about erotica, creating experiences through storytelling,” said Ana Valens, a game designer and Daily Dot columnist covering trans experiences, sexuality, and VR porn. (Note: The author of this article knows Valens socially.)
VR porn needs to move past the infantile stage of pure gimmick or odd sex toy to become relevant.
“And that’s the direction the industry seems to be heading towards as people realize, OK, this isn’t enough,” she said.
The virtual reality porn gap
The current issues keeping VR porn from reaching more innovative, varied, and inclusive heights are reflective of the regular porn industry it grew from. But in VR porn, the issues of inclusivity are only exacerbated by the additional gatekeepers of tech, cost, and access.
Most mainstream VR porn is exclusively heteronormative and cis-gendered, assuming the user is male and excluding trans identities. This is likely driven by who has the resources, not only to have VR but to also make it. While the diversity of audiences is increasing through niche communities, the prevailing consumer base remains cis men.
VR can be more than a virtual sex doll for men.

“Many VR porn creators seem less focused on exploration and possibly self-discovery, and more on simply getting off. That’s fine. It’s just not what we’re all about,” said Devilish Domina, who is the mind and voice behind the Dominatrix Simulator. “It seems like developers in this space are more opportunistic than seeing it as an art form. And because it tends to be a more taboo area, it likely doesn’t attract as many experienced developers.”
How the indie scene can save VR porn
While the norms of regular porn define the offerings of bigger, more traditional VR porn publishers like Naughty America, creators like Dominatrix Simulator‘s Deviant Tech are carving out their own space with their own growing audience.
Unlike many other VR games (erotic or otherwise) that assume you’re male, Dominatrix Simulator gives you the option between two genders — and is currently working on adding non-binary options due to fan requests.
Worship her — or just take the headset off if it becomes too much.
Image: deviant tech
But that’s not all that makes Dominatrix Simulator a beacon of innovation and sexual exploration in VR porn games.
In the game, a femme-dom (who comes in four different varieties) tells you what to do. While you get some dialogue options to communicate consent, the idea is that the dominatrix basically inhabits the role of the player, while the person wearing the headset becomes her game as a submissive, flipping the traditional adult video script of the player being in control. She knows whether or not you’ve obeyed, too, since the motion controls can detect whether you’re kneeling like she commanded, for example.
“It’s no longer just about your alone time at night getting off,” Valens said. “It allows you to explore what it means to be a submissive, or in a BDSM relationship. What does it mean to play an adult game when you are not the one in charge? VR is perfect for that kind of question because BDSM is such an embodied experience.”
While Dominatrix Simulator delivers an immersive BDSM simulation, it’s also a tool for dipping your toes in BDSM rather than trying it first IRL.
“One of the things we’ve been most excited about with creating a VR submission experience for players is how safe it can be for new people to delve into kinky experiences, experiment being controlled in a really safe way, and enjoy themselves in the privacy of their own homes,” said Devilish Domina. “Submitting isn’t always easy. Being kinky or queer isn’t always easy.”
But in VR porn, you can let loose in ways you wouldn’t imagine doing in real life. Also, unlike healthy BDSM relationships IRL, you can quit the virtual session whenever you want without needing to go through the usual steps with a partner, like aftercare (the term used for the check in stage after the roleplay is done).
“With our game, people are gaining confidence in their bodies and their interests. Many of them are taking risks and talking on our server, asking the ‘newbie’ questions, and venturing out to find others in the real world,” said Devilish Domina. “And we hope to keep offering this kind of sex-positive space.”
Much like a dominatrix, the simulator, “gives players the chance to experiment with letting go, giving in, and, ultimately, giving themselves permission to enjoy their bodies and their pleasure,” she said. “We tell players to get naked. To show off. To touch themselves. To orgasm. We give them permission to let go.”
As with many indie adult VR games of its kind, the Patreon community around Dominatrix Simulator is not only integral to funding their work but also to creating the diversity of content that VR porn deserves.
“The fan community is absolutely critical for the indie and non-mainstream VR porn scene,” said Devilish Domina, pointing to others like Yiffaliciousand Virt-a-mate. “Fans with VR rigs know how small the market is to them for games, let alone VR porn, so they are a generous bunch who want to help fund new projects.”
Aside from exploration, though, there’s also an educational element to the best kind of VR porn.
Aside from exploration, though, there’s also an educational element to the best kind of VR porn.
Darling saw the potential for adult-themed VR as a form of social learning. She helped create a VR dating simulator of sorts, set in a rainy cafe where the viewer would get to talk to a holographic capture of herself and other performers.
There wasn’t any actual porn involved, but if the player handled the situation well, they could get more forward and sexual with her. Their ability to broach the topic, though, was reliant on an invisible point system that accounted for whether the player chose to first engage in polite conversation rather than immediately jump into inappropriate or even mean behavior.
“If you said anything like that before you had established a rapport with this holographic person, she’d be like, ‘You know what, I’m going to go.’ We even put in a functionality where it would detect where your gaze was focused, so if you’re staring at my tits my holograph would be like, ‘Excuse me, my eyes are up here,” she said.
The erotica of embodiment, environment, and intimacy
For a long time, Darling dominated the camgirl VR scene because she emphasized intimacy with the viewer.
“What works best in VR isn’t these, you know, Olympic-style sexual scenes of extreme, graphic aggression. It’s the ones that feel the most intimate and personal,” Darling said.
When it came to the new ASMR series, establishing that relationship was the central direction she gave all the performers. ASMR is already intimate itself, but VR brings a whole new level of closeness. “Incorporating the really cerebral aspects of ASMR with the visceral VR experience deepens and heightens that connection,” she said.
That’s true for the more game-ified adult VR experiences as well, though obviously in a more fantastical context.
“World-building is really important to creating arousing experiences. Mainstream porn has set a low bar for what is possible,” Devilish Domina said. “But with this kind of immersive playground, we can make all fantasies into realities. We can let our players be someone they are not, like how people swap genders in games all the time … We have had so many requests for experiences players just cannot have in real life.”
And for sex columnist Ana Valens those possibilities are also in a way what makes VR potentially so valuable to the queer community.
While the world of VR is still severely lacking in queer content, some queer women have taken to adult games like Honey Select, which allows them to customize every minute detail of a virtual woman. But it still assumes the player is male, and that both participants are cis.
“One thing that’s bummed me out a lot about these adult VR games is that there’s just no bodies like mine. It’s just not there. I’m not gonna find it. It’s just not what the priority is because, again, VR porn is mostly made for men,” Valens said.
That’s a particular shame, too, since VR as a medium is defined by its capacity to let you inhabit other bodies. That’s an invaluable experience for someone who has never felt at home in their real-life body.
VR porn has come a long way since its earliest days of being just Tube porn on a Google Cardboard headset. But somehow, we’re more ready to explore hardcore fantastical furry sex before approaching experiences grounded in the actual realities of trans people’s embodied experiences.
“I don’t know when we’re going to see more queer VR games,” Valens lamented. “We do see some, but adult queer VR probably won’t happen for a while.”
The good, the bad, and the future of getting off in VR
VR porn is far from having reached the height of its potential, with too many practical issues (like availability) to address before it possibly ever could. But some creators and a willing audience seem equally invested in seeing its freak flag fly. It feels like we’ve never felt closer to watching adult-themed VR flourish into something great.
“A whole new niche in VR of self-loving, self-empowering porn — where, in the privacy of their own mind, people can experience their fantasies and explore new ones.”
The Deviant Tech team is already looking into how to implement remote controlled toys tied to Dominatrix Simulator’s game controls (“think buttplug.io,” Devilish Domina said.)
“We hope that our game kicks off a whole new niche in VR of self-loving, self-empowering porn — where, in the privacy of their own mind, people can experience their fantasies and explore new ones,” she said.
But she is also cautious of certain aspects of VR porn, particularly its incredible power to allow users to lose themselves in those fantasies.
“The more immersive and realistic a game is — the more it makes a player feel — and the more addicting it can become. Porn is already a very addicting medium and many people find their relationships challenged when one partner is compulsive in their porn usage,” she cautioned.
Similarly, Valens notes that VR porn will be defined by the ethics of the people wielding that tool.
“As the technology gets better, it becomes a tool, and a tool can be good and a tool can be bad. Tools that enter the hands of bigots or people that hate women are going to be used horribly,” she said. As an example, she pointed to Studio FOW, a notorious hyper-realistic form of animated porn known for its extremely brutal, horrifyingly graphic, and unbelievably popular content.
There’s another worry, too, that this burgeoning indie adult VR game scene will be squeezed out by big developers who limit the tech.
“Inevitably, VR porn will mainstream VR in general. And then VR companies will want to move to a closed garden format, like Android or iPhone,” said Valens. “That would mean that the kind of resources needed to make VR porn would stay in the hands of these really privileged developers rather than being shared with marginalized people.”
A towering, giant VR Dominatrix shows VR porn’s potential.
Image: deviant tech
But Darling is confident in VR porn’s mainstay power among fans, who seem more than willing to pay to ensure it addresses various kinks and desires.
At its worst, VR porn can be just more of the same — if not even worse at objectifying women by turning them into literal objects to be manipulated and controlled by presumably male players. But at its best, VR porn is beginning to open doors to an endless possibility of new and progressive spank bank material.
“The world is changing. People want bodily autonomy. Sexual autonomy. And we want to see VR porn and adult experiences encourage this,” said Devilish Domina. “There is so much potential for educating people about their bodies, letting them try different relationship styles, be different people, and give them the chance to discover more about themselves in a safe, non-judgmental environment.”
