Dolphins show promise, but lose third preseason game to Ravens

The Dolphins lost their third consecutive preseason game this time to the Ravens 27-10, but the story from this game was the play of their offense as well as their defense.

While quarterback Ryan Tannehill got off to a rough start as he fumbled the ball twice, he finished the night 11-of-16 as he threw for 115 yards and one touchdown completed to Danny Amendola. Tannehill also finished with a quarterback rating of 110.2.

In three preseason games, Tannehill has thrown for 247 yards and one touchdown against zero interceptions. While the Dolphins have a ton of issues, Tannehill indeed isn’t one of them.

Robert Quinn’s play isn’t an issue as well as he registered another sack this preseason. Quinn now has three sacks in three games as he could be headed to a renaissance to his Pro Bowl form with the Rams.

Vincent Taylor was also able to record 0.5 sacks and a blocked field goal on Ravens kicker Justin Tucker’s attempt. Kenyan Drake was able to rush for 32 yards on four carries. He also caught a 36-yard pass in the second quarter.

What is still a major concern is their tackling and stopping the run. The Ravens were able to rush for 206 yards on the Dolphins defense. Yes, it is preseason, but the Dolphins have had an enormous problem stopping the run during their three games. Things probably won’t get any easier when the Dolphins host the Titans on Sept. 9 as Tennessee is a team that is physical and loves to run the football.

The Dolphins will close out the preseason next Thursday in Atlanta against the Falcons.

Marqise Lee Carted off with Gruesome Knee Injury vs. Falcons

Stephen B. Morton/Associated Press

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Marqise Lee had to be carted off the field with a knee injury during Saturday night’s preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Lee’s knee bent awkwardly after a low hit by Atlanta safety Damontae Kazee, who received a 15-yard penalty for lowering his helmet.

While the severity of the injury was not immediately known, the team announced Lee would not return to the game.

Lee has played all 16 games just once in his NFL career since the Jaguars selected him in the second round of the 2014 draft.

While Jacksonville relies on its strong rushing attack with Leonard Fournette and stifling defense on a weekly basis, the passing game will be hard-pressed if Lee cannot return. That is especially the case after Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns left this past offseason.

The USC product tallied 56 receptions for 702 yards and three touchdowns during the 2017 campaign.

The Jaguars still have the combination of Donte Moncrief, Rashad Greene, Keelan Cole and Dede Westbrook at the wide receiver spot, but look for them to rely on the running game even more until Lee is able to return. The defense and Fournette are good enough to carry them into postseason contention, but it is difficult to imagine the Jaguars being able to survive many additional setbacks at wide receiver.

CBS News faces the wrath of Twitter for misleading Beto O’Rourke tweet

Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-TX) eloquently defended NFL players who kneel. CBS News drew viral outrage when it completely mischaracterized O'Rourke's words.

If you bothered to log onto your Twitter account at least once this week, you almost definitely saw the viral video of Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke responding thoughtfully to a question about whether he finds it disrespectful when NFL players kneel during the national anthem. The clip drew wide praise, including from LeBron James, Ellen DeGeneres, and Janelle Monáe

SEE ALSO: EA censored Colin Kaepernick’s name in a ‘Madden NFL 19’ song

But a CBS News story on the exchange created viral outrage by reducing the nuance and insight of O’Rourke’s response to a terribly misleading headline and tweet.

This is what O’Rourke said: “I can think of nothing more American than to peacefully stand up, or take a knee, for your rights, anytime, anywhere, in any place.” (The full clip is below.)

This is how CBS News translated those words: “Beto O’Rourke says there’s ‘nothing more American’ than NFL players protesting the national anthem.”

Editor’s note: CBS News has changed a headline to more wholly reflect Beto O’Rourke’s remarks and correct a previous headline that stated O’Rourke said there was “nothing more American” than NFL players protesting the national anthem. https://t.co/36nR2en45n

— CBS News (@CBSNews) August 25, 2018

In case anyone needs a refresher, NFL players who choose to kneel are not protesting the national anthem but racial inequality and police brutality.

Journalists, advocates, activists, and even Mark Cuban called foul on CBS News for essentially adopting the same false language Fox News and O’Rourke’s opponent, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, used to describe O’Rourke’s answer.

THEY ARE NOT PROTESTING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. They are protesting police brutality. Please fix the tweet @cbsnews. And friends, please share this so they hear from all of us. https://t.co/haMsksfQqG

— Neera Tanden 🌊 (@neeratanden) August 25, 2018

I’ve had enough of apologies. It has been two full seasons since these NFL protests against racial injustice began, and lazy press continues to promote a deliberately false shorthand. Protesting during the anthem is not protesting the anthem. Delete the original tweet, @CBSNews. https://t.co/eSLbgKrNMY

— Jamil Smith (@JamilSmith) August 25, 2018

that major outlets, after all this time, are still writing that NFL players are protesting “the national anthem” is is not just a bad look, but a journalistic embarrassment.

— Astead (@AsteadWesley) August 25, 2018

In today’s world THE HEADLINE IS THE STORY. It’s crazy that headlines are still created like they were for papers in the 50s rather than evaluated as critically as the content they represent. Few things diminish journalistic integrity as much as a mismatched headline/story https://t.co/0HBLVsocy3

— Mark Cuban (@mcuban) August 25, 2018

Saying the NFL players are protesting the National Anthem is like saying Rosa Parks was protesting buses

— Dana Schwartz (@DanaSchwartzzz) August 25, 2018

This is not what Beto O’Rourke said. It’s what Ted Cruz said Beto O’Rourke said. If mainstream journalism had working norms for dealing with bad faith, the story would be that Cruz lied about Beto. Instead, CBS reprints Cruz’s lie as though it were true. https://t.co/vOaewTPaBI

— Brian Beutler (@brianbeutler) August 25, 2018

The story’s headline has since been corrected, and the piece now includes an editor’s note that accurately states why NFL players kneel during the national anthem. Yet a tweet with the original language has not been deleted from CBS News’ Twitter account as of Saturday evening, even though it had a like/comment ratio of 4,800 to 11,000 by Saturday afternoon (which definitely isn’t good). It might not be long before the news outlet does the right thing and retracts the tweet as well.

In the meantime, here are O’Rourke’s comments for your own listening pleasure:

Donald Trump apparently thought the American flag has blue stripes

At least he got one of the red stripes right?

2016%2f09%2f16%2f63%2fhttpsd2mhye01h4nj2n.cloudfront.netmediazgkymde1lza2.c97cfBy Adam Rosenberg

In Donald Trump’s eyes, anyone who kneels during the National Anthem is a “son of a bitch.” But the 45th U.S. president could apparently use another grade school lesson or two on the American flag.

On Thursday, Trump joined First Lady Melania Trump and Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar for a photo opp at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Ohio. During the visit, President Trump spent some time sitting with the kids and coloring. That’s when it happened.

SEE ALSO: Sia’s story of meeting Donald Trump on ‘SNL’ comes with a crappy twist ending

The president added a blue stripe to the American flag.

Azar highlighted the error, presumably unintentionally, when he tweeted out photos from the event. As you can plainly see, the president’s partially finished flag-coloring project sports an unmistakable patch of blue, right where it shouldn’t be.

(It’s the third of these three images, the one on the bottom right.)

The opioid crisis is one of our top priorities at HHS, with a drumbeat of action on the full range of efforts where we can assist local communities. Today, I joined @POTUS & @FLOTUS in Ohio to learn how states and communities are responding to the challenge of opioid addiction. pic.twitter.com/NwxSoeNznA

— Alex Azar (@SecAzar) August 25, 2018

While our country’s flag is indeed red, white, and blue, the 13 stripes — which represent the 13 British colonies that declared their independence and became the USA’s first states in 1776 — are only red and white. The blue appears behind the flag’s 50 stars (one for each state!), in the rectangle situated in its top-left corner.

Before any Trump supporters come out of the woodwork to cry foul and suggest that maybe this sheet of paper didn’t belong to the president… there’s another photo that shows him actually adding the blue himself.

On the one hand, anything goes, color-wise, when you’re sitting and coloring with a bunch of little kids. Want to make an orange, green, and purple flag? Go wild. Who cares? It’s happy fun times with kids.

Then again, this is the president who’s been railing against predominantly black athletes in the National Football League for daring to protest police brutality and racial inequality in America during the pre-game performance of the National Anthem. Surely a man who respects the flag and everything it stands for so much should know where the colors go on said flag.

Sarcasm aside, it should be clear to all observers by now: Trump pledges allegiance only to himself. He has no conception of American values, or what actually makes America great (hint: immigration is a big part of it).

It isn’t even a little bit surprising to learn that the man might not know where the blue goes on the American flag.

‘At home, we’ve no chance’: Thousands reach Peru before new rules

Thousands of people fleeing Venezuela’s deepening economic crisis have rushed towards the Peruvian border before the introduction of new rules making it harder to cross into the country.

As of 05:00 GMT on Saturday, Venezuelans are required to show valid passports instead of national ID cards to enter – although Peruvian authorities are reported to be “flexible” with children, the elderly and pregnant women.

Up to 4,000 people have been arriving daily in recent weeks in Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Brazil, heading south to escape Venezuela’s political turmoil and economic meltodown which has seen inflation skyrocket and public services fail amid chronic food and medicine shortages.

Peru, one of the region’s fastest-growing economies with 4.7 percent growth projected for next year, is a particularly popular destination, with an estimated 400,000 Venezuelans already living there.

But a rising backlash to Venezuelan migrants prompted this week the introduction of the tougher border controls in Peru – as did in Ecuador, though a judge there on Friday rolled back the passport regulations.

As Saturday’s deadline approached, thousands – some carrying small children – poured into Peru’s border with Ecuador by any transport means possible, with many travelling on foot.

“This is very sad,” Joander Perez, a 15-year-old Venezuelan who travelled more than 4,000km with members of his family, told Al Jazeera at the border.

“We were at the best time of our lives, with friends, school, family but we have to leave to find a better life,” he added.

“In Venezuela we were hungry.”

The United Nations has described the exodus of Venezuelans to neighbouring countries as a “crisis moment” comparable to events involving refugees in the Mediterranean.

And although numbers are alarming, this is not a new phenomenon, experts said.

“This started in 2002, when only the wealthy people migrated from Venezuela,” Ronal Rodriguez, a professor and researcher at the Venezuelan Observatory, a think tank at the University of Rosario in Colombia, told Al Jazeera.

“In 2007, we saw the migration of the middle class. But from 2015, onwards, we have seen the migration of the popular sectors,” he added.

“The ones that take the roads – even risking their own lives.”

‘Humanitarian corridor’

Ecuador opened a “humanitarian corridor” on Friday and lifted its own entry restrictions to facilitate the Venezuelans’ travel to Peru.

Interior Minister Mauro Toscanini said that 35 busloads of migrants were on the move along the route authorities had opened to Peru.

More than 2,500 migrants arrived at the small Aguas Verdes crossing on Friday – 10 times the usual daily traffic.

“People keep on pouring into this border,” Al Jazeera’s Mariana Sanchez, reporting from Peru’s crossing with Ecuador, said on Saturday.

“Many believe that the Ecuadorean government does not want [Venezuelan people] to stay in Ecuador, because they were forced onto the busses – and even if people want to stay back there, they are being forced to come all the way here,” she added.

“Authorities [however] have said they will be flexible with people that have small children, elderly and pregnant women to allow them in without a passport,” she added.

Sanchez said on Saturday that those at the border without a valid passport were applying for asylum, “the only option that they have to be able to enter the country legally”.

The pace of departures has accelerated in recent days [Douglas Juarez/Reuters]

Of the 2.3 million Venezuelans living abroad, more than 1.6 million have fled the country since 2015, according to UN figures.

Colombia says it has already given temporary residence to 870,000 Venezuelans but it can barely cope.

It has pleaded with its southern neighbours to agree to a combined migration strategy, while Ecuador has called a meeting of 13 Latin American countries next month to discuss the crisis.

“From all countries, Colombia is the one that is taking the worst hit, we cannot ask the population to go back,” Rodriguez, the professor, said.

“Every day we receive pregnant women that require medical assistance. Turning them back is sentencing them to death, we need to respond and find spaces in societies that are feasible for them,” he added.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will set up a special team to ensure a coordinated regional response, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

Venezuela is in a fourth straight year of recession, with double-digit declines in its gross domestic product. The inflation rate is expected to reach an astonishing one million percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Under President Nicolas Maduro’s leadership, industry is operating at only 30 percent, hit hard by the crash in oil prices since 2014 in a country that earns 96 percent of its revenue from crude.

In efforts to boost the economy and tame the rampant hyperinflation, Maduro and his government on August 20 rolled out a new currency, slashing five zeroes from the bolivar.

The new bolivar, which will be in circulation alongside the old currency during a transitional period, will be pegged to the country’s state-backed cryptocurrency, the petro.

“This change has generated huge uncertainty among Venezuelans, and people are not having easy access to the new currency,” Rodriguez said.

“All the paper money [new and old] look very similar, creating huge confusion, all of them are labelled as Bolivares, so now the citizens don’t know if they are using the right money or not”

“This situation has made incredibly difficult for Venezuelans to receive the remittances, creating huge chaos, this change is what ultimately motivated people to flew the country,”  he added.

Maduro, who says that he is the victim of a US-led “economic war” designed to sabotage his administration through sanctions, said that using the petro will abolish the “tyranny” of the dollar and lead to an economic rebirth in Venezuela.

Other measures recently introduced by the government include a loosening of foreign capital rules and a massive increase in the minimum wage.

But despite these moves, the pace of departures has accelerated in recent days.

“It’s sad – I graduated with a bachelor degree, now I can’t begin my career in law,” Zenalis Rodriguez, a Venezuelan at the Peruvian-Ecuadorean border, told Al Jazeera.

“We all gave up our future – in Venezuela we don’t have a chance.”

As the exodus continues, many fear the crisis will not end any time soon.

“Even if Maduro falls tomorrow, that doesn’t mean people will go back – people won’t go back to a country that is highly unstable,” said Rodriguez.

“This situation will transform Latin America, and it will last many years. A joint response will be required, Latin America will need to work as a region,” he added.

“These people will need to be absorbed and assumed, and the countries will need to come up with instruments that aid them and regulatory mechanisms to sort this crisis out.”

NASA imagery shows the beauty of nature’s fury amidst fires and storms

From a ground-level perspective, blazing wildfires and different varieties of storm are terrifying displays of nature’s might. But viewed from space, through the right (computer-enhanced) eyes, they’re all things of beauty.

On Friday, NASA released a visualization of Earth showing the aerosols that were swirling through our planet’s atmosphere on Aug. 23. It was a busy day for Mother Nature, as you can see.

SEE ALSO: Watch as NOAA storm hunters enter the stadium-like eye of Hurricane Lane

Aerosols are specks of solids and liquids that swirl through the air we breathe. Most of the time, they’re invisible to the naked eye. But when, say, a fire releases ash into the sky, or when a wind storm blows dust across the desert, those invisible aerosols are made visible.

In NASA’s visualization, you can see how fires and industrial areas, primarily in North America and Africa, released black carbon particles that painted those regions in a reddish-orange haze. Dust storms in Africa and Asia are rendered in purple. And sea salt aerosol kicked up by Pacific cyclones are varying shades of light blue.

According to NASA, the images are produced by Earth-observing satellites that chart (among other things) the ebbs and flows of aerosol in our atmosphere. The imaging model has a mouthful of a name — it’s the Goddard Earth Observing System Forward Processing (GEOS FP for short) — but the results speak for themselves.

This visualization is particularly noteworthy because of all the major weather events that have been happening around the world in recent days.

The dense zone of red/orange concentrated in the western half of North America is a sign of the wildfires that have been raging in that part of the country for large portions of the summer. And in the tropical cyclones, you can get a sense of the weather patterns that led to storms that continue to lash Hawaii even now.

Downgraded Hurricane Lane dumps rain on Hawaii, flooding still a fear

Hurricane Lane may have looked like a monster storm earlier this week, but it petered out by Friday thanks to strong wind shear. Now a tropical storm, Lane still poses a threat to Hawaii in the form of flash flooding.

SEE ALSO: Photos of Hurricane Lane from space show the extreme size of the monster storm

The National Weather Service in Honolulu extended its flash flood warning Saturday morning. It may be extended again, beyond Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time, if heavy rain persists. The warning was issued for the northeast and southeast sides of the Big Island from Hawi to Hilo to South Point. The tropical storm warning remained in effect.

The National Weather Service said runoff levels remain high and an expected band of heavy rainfall moving onshore could overwhelm ground that is saturated from the rain that preceded Lane’s arrival. The storm already resulted in “life-threatening flooding and landslides,” according to the National Weather Service.

Some weather experts posted images on Twitter of Hurricane Lane breaking apart once it encountered wind shear.

This is what a major hurricane getting torn apart looks like…

What you’re seeing here is Hurricane Lane being ripped apart by the wind blowing in different directions and speeds at different heights in the atmosphere – known as wind shear.

Cristiano Ronaldo Scoreless in Juventus’ 2-0 Win over Lazio

Juventus' Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo (2ndR) and Juventus' French midfielder Blaise Matuidi (L) congratulalte Juventus' Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic after he scored his team's second goal during the Italian Serie A football match Juventus vs Lazio on August 25, 2018 at the Allianz Stadium in Turin. MARCO BERTORELLO/Getty Images

Cristiano Ronaldo endured a frustrating home debut for Juventus on Saturday, as he could not find the back of the net in a 2-0 win over Lazio.

Miralem Pjanic opened the scoring for the hosts on the half-hour mark. The midfielder struck a low shot from range past goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha.

Ronaldo did play a part in the second goal, as Mario Mandzukic made the game safe at the 75-minute mark.

Strakosha managed to get a touch on Joao Cancelo’s cross from the right, but the ball took a deflection off Ronaldo and fell to Mandzukic, who fired into an empty net.

Ronaldo’s Struggles Give Allegri Plenty to Think About

Ronaldo drew a blank on his Serie A debut last time out, and there was more frustration for the summer signing at the Allianz Stadium in Turin.

Massimiliano Allegri made changes to his side for this one. Mandzukic and Federico Bernardeschi were brought into the attack, and Paulo Dybala and Douglas Costa were demoted to the bench.

Yet it was a frustrating game for Ronaldo. He suffered from a lack of service and had few sights of goal, particularly in the first half.

Opta highlighted his lack of impact:

OptaPaolo @OptaPaolo

1 – Cristiano #Ronaldo made only 1 touch in the opposite box in the first half vs Lazio. Carburetion. #JuveLazio https://t.co/BOJvaWVRkT

There were flickers from the Portuguese after the break. A typical run toward goal saw him bring out the stepovers and cross for Mandzukic, who made a mess of the chance.

A free-kick just outside the box offered another sight of goal for Ronaldo, but he could only blast his effort straight into the wall. Minutes later he headed a cross from Pjanic just over the bar.

His best chance of the game came on 70 minutes when he hit a great strike from the edge of the box. It looked destined for the back of the net until Strakosha tipped it over the crossbar.

Ronaldo did play a part in the goal but will feel he could have scored. He looked set to tap home Cancelo’s cross, but the goalkeeper managed to just get a touch. It proved a vital intervention, as the ball then hit Ronaldo and sat up perfectly for Mandzukic to convert.

ESPN FC’s Alex Shaw noted Ronaldo’s reaction to the goal:

Alex Shaw @AlexShawESPN

Madzukic has just scored for Juventus. Ball came across goal, Ronaldo has an open goal but he got his legs in a muddle with the goal gaping. Throws his hands in the air in frustration as Mandzukic scores.

The 33-year-old has not had the start to his Juventus career that he will have wanted, and Allegri will need to think about how he can get the best out of his star man.

Ronaldo Production Only Missing Link for Dominant Juventus Squad

Ronaldo may not have opened his account for his new club, but the Serie A champions look in great shape already. They have taken six points from their opening two games, and Lazio caused them few problems.

Pjanic signed a new deal with the club on Tuesday and celebrated with a fine strike, which demonstrated once again his quality and importance to the team.

Bernardeschi also caught the eye with a strong performance. Football writer David Amoyal was impressed with the 24-year-old:

David Amoyal @DavidAmoyal

Bernardeschi off to a very fast start this season. Considering the wealth of options Allegri has at his disposal at winger & striker position, will be interesting to see if they experiment with him in the midfield as has been suggested

While Ronaldo could not find the back of the net, Mandzukic made sure of the points late on. Opta showed how Juventus also win in Serie A when the Croatian scores:

OptaPaolo @OptaPaolo

22 – Juventus have won all the 22 Serie A games in which Mario #Mandzukic scored at least 1 goal. Row. #JuveLazio

Allegri’s side are already looking incredibly strong, and the concern for the rest of the league will be just how formidable they will be when Ronaldo starts scoring.

What’s Next?

Juventus are back in action on Saturday as they head to Parma to take on the newly promoted side. Lazio play a day later as they welcome Frosinone to the Stadio Olimpico.

Will a Saudi Aramco IPO ever happen?

Saudi Arabia has reportedly delayed its plans to list shares of its state-owned oil company Aramco on the stock market.

Media reports say the initial public offering (IPO), scheduled for 2018, has been postponed indefinitely – claims denied by the Saudi government.

Khalid al-Falih, the kingdom’s energy minister, said the government “remains committed” to conducting the IPO, and that the “timing will depend on multiple factors”.

The plan to float around five percent of the oil company is expected to be the world’s largest stock sale.

It lies at the heart of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s vision to transform the economy.

So, where does this leave Saudi Arabia’s efforts to raise money and diversify its economy?

Report: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle adopt Labrador dog

With the Royal Wedding now in the rearview mirror, Prince Harry and Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle are taking the next big step in their marriage: They’re adopting a dog.

The newlyweds have reportedly adopted a Labrador according to People.

SEE ALSO: Prince Harry’s former car can be yours for a mere £71K

According to the entertainment magazine, the two adopted the dog in “early summer” and the assuredly adorable pup has “been joining them at their country getaway in the Cotswolds area and Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace in London.”

So what does this new canine addition to the family look like? I mean, it’s gotta be adorable, right?

Unfortunately, photos of the Labrador haven’t been released (or leaked) yet. Neither has the dog’s name.

Markle is a known pup lover. Prior to joining the British royal family, she had two — a rescue dog named Bogart and a beagle named Guy.

Guy made the trip to his new home in the UK, but Bogart apparently didn’t and now resides with one of Markle’s friends in Los Angeles, according to E! News.

We’re sure photos of the mysterious new Labrador will surface eventually, but if you don’t know what they look like (maybe you’re not a dog person!), here are some cuties to get stare at:
