Hawaii Defeats South Korea 3-0 to Win 2018 LLWS World Championship

Hawaii completed its perfect summer with a 3-0 victory over South Korea to win the 2018 Little League World Series.

Honolulu Little League entered the day with an 8-0 record while cruising through the West regional and United States championship. Sunday’s victory in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, over international champions South Seoul Little League helped the team secure the ultimate prize.

The squad became just the second U.S. team to win the LLWS in the last seven years, but its the third Hawaii representative to win it all since 2005.

Hawaii had been shutting teams down throughout this tournament, allowing runs in just one of four games in Williamsport. Starter Ka’olu Holt only gave up one run in 6.2 innings across three appearances.

He was somehow even better in this one, throwing a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts and just two hits allowed in six innings.

Michael Lananna of Baseball America was impressed by the young pitcher:

Michael Lananna @mlananna

Hawaii starter Ka’olu Holt can really spin the ball. He’s thrown a heavy diet of breaking balls and has gotten a ton of swings and misses. Five strikeouts through two scoreless innings. It’s a big sweeper.

Ka’olu Holt still on the mound for Hawaii in the fifth, with a 3-0 lead. He’s been outstanding so far, keeping these South Korea hitters off-balance with a good breaking ball.

Hawaii finished the tournament only allowing three runs (two earned) in five games, not giving up a single run in the final 17 innings of action.

South Korea starter Yeong Hyeon Kim had been dominant throughout this tournament as well, but he wasn’t quite as sharp Sunday. The pitcher had eight strikeouts but also allowed six hits and two walks, which contributed to his three earned runs in four innings.

Mana Lau Kong got the scoring started for the American team with a first-inning solo home run that was a big early boost to his team’s confidence:

Honolulu LL loaded the bases in each of the next two innings, eventually getting two runs across the plate in the third on a wild pitch.

Between Holt’s pitching and excellent defense all over the field, Hawaii kept South Korea off the scoreboard and closed out the win.

Both teams were outstanding throughout the summer and will bring plenty of accolades back to their hometowns. However, the squad from Honolulu ended the tournament on a high note while completing an unforgettable experience.

Chaos erupted at an esports tournament in Jacksonville, Florida on Sunday when a mass shooting ended with multiple fatalities and many more injured.

Word of the shooting first emerged on Twitch, from a live feed of the Madden NFL 19 Classic qualifier at Jacksonville’s GLHF GameBar. In the disturbing audio-only account, rapid bursts of gunfire are heard multiple times over the shouts of attendees.

As of Sunday afternoon, four are dead and “several others” are injured, according to a local report from News 4 Jacksonville. Police also say that one suspect is dead, though the shooter hasn’t yet been identified.

Steven “SteveyJ” Javaruski, a pro Madden player who was participating in the event and witnessed the shooting, told the Los Angeles Times that the shooter was a competitor who had lost. He added that he witnessed a number of deaths, including the shooter, who he said killed himself. (Mashable has not been able to confirm these details independently.)

Drini Gjoka, another tournament competitor, posted on Twitter that he was grazed by a bullet.

I am literally so lucky. The bullet hit my thumb

Reached for comment, Madden publisher Electronic Arts shared the following statement with Mashable: “We are aware of an incident at a sanctioned Madden Championship Series competition in Jacksonville. We are working with authorities to gather facts at this stage. This is a horrible situation, and our deepest sympathies go out to all involved.”

Eric Decker Announces Retirement from NFL After 8 Year Career

Wide receiver Eric Decker announced his retirement after eight NFL seasons Sunday on Instagram.

Decker, 31, was attempting to make the New England Patriots roster but had not been impressive in camp. He played the 2017 season with the Tennessee Titans, making 54 receptions for 563 yards and one touchdown.

“It has been my childhood dream and my passion to play the game of football. I was very fortunate and blessed to have had the opportunity to have those dreams fulfilled and to have played with such extremely talented and hard-working teammates, coaches and staff.”

Signed earlier this month to a one-year contract, Decker struggled to make an impact. He did not play at all with the first-team offense and had a drop when he played with the second team in the Patriots’ preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.

Decker finishes his career with 439 receptions for 5,816 yards and 53 touchdowns. He played for the Denver Broncos and New York Jets in addition to Tennessee.

McCain to lie in state at Capitol

John McCain

Sen. John McCain, who died Saturday, will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, congressional leaders said Sunday.

“The nation mourns the loss of a great American patriot, a statesman who put his country first and enriched this institution through many years of service. The Senate is keeping Cindy [McCain], the McCain family, all John’s friends and staff, and the people of Arizona in our prayers at this tremendously difficult time,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said in the statement.

Story Continued Below

“I appreciate my colleagues and the entire Senate and House family’s assistance with this honor,” McConnell added.

Only 31 Americans have lain in state or in honor in the Capitol Rotunda since the structure was completed in 1824, not including unknown soldiers of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War who have been recognized.

Most recently, evangelist Billy Graham lay in honor from Feb. 28 to March 1.

“It’s hard to imagine a person more worthy of the honor, and I’m pleased that Americans will have the opportunity to pay their respects to this hero and statesman,” House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said of McCain, an Arizona Republican, in a tweet.

The ceremony is the most recent parliamentary honor by McCain’s colleagues in the hours after he died of brain cancer Saturday evening. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he would introduce a resolution to rename the Russell Senate Office Building in McCain’s memory “so that generations remember him,” the New York Democrat said in a tweet.

Bugatti will make only 40 of its new $5.8 million super sports car

Named for French racing driver Alberto Divo, Bugatti’s latest sports car was revealed this week as an ultra-ultra super sports car.

The Divo — not to be confused with the French automaker’s $3 million Chiron — is a lighter sports car (77 pounds to be exact) with a subtly different look and improved cooling system. The brakes are cooled from four different air flows keeping tire temperature optimal for speed racing. With lightweight tires, less compartment space, and a carbon fiber cover, it’s a nimbler sports car.

SEE ALSO: This Bugatti yacht is basically a Chiron on water. With a jacuzzi. And a fire pit.

These improvements come at a cost: The Divo is a $5.8 million supercar and all 40 vehicles have already sold to previous Chiron customers — it went fast.

Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann said in a statement about the reveal on Friday, “the Divo is made for corners” and windier roads. It’s supposed to be more agile than the Chiron, but that agility comes with a cost: It’s slower. The max speed is 236 mph while the Chiron can hit more than 260 mph. What a slow-poke.

Can Pope Francis end abuse of children in Catholic Church?

The Roman Catholic Church is the largest and one of the oldest religious institutions in the world.

But it’s facing some of its biggest scandals and criticism in recent history.

Pope Francis, who leads the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics, is under pressure to strongly act against child abuse by priests and the cover-up by church officials that often follows.

The issue has overshadowed his two-day trip to Ireland, the first papal visit to that country in nearly 40 years.

So, how will he address this problem? And what will it mean for the future of the Roman Catholic Church?

Presenter: Dareen Abughaida

Guests:

Christopher Lamb – Rome correspondent for The Tablet Weekly Review

Michael Walsh – Vatican historian and editor of the Oxford Dictionary of Popes

Donnacha O Beachain – director of research at the School of Law and Government at Dublin City University.

Tiger Woods Shoots 1 Under Par in Final Round of 2018 Northern Trust

Mel Evans/Associated Press

If Tiger Woods wants to fix the FedEx Cup, he’s going to need to head back to the drawing board.

Woods carded a one-under 70 in Sunday’s final round of the 2018 Northern Trust, going into the clubhouse at four under overall in a tie for 41st place. He carded two birdies against one bogey in the round, spending most of the morning and early afternoon again battling his putter and irons.

After playing his entire third round without a bogey, Woods nearly did the same Sunday. He went through the first 14 holes without carding an over-par score before a bad drive on the par-three 15th led to a two putt from 22 feet for bogey.

The story of the round, much like it has been throughout the week, was missed opportunities. Woods missed a pair of birdie putts inside 10 feet and spent most of his day two-putting after approaches left him outside 20 feet for birdie—chances he consistently failed to convert. The best putt of Woods’ round was actually a miss; he nearly drained a 44-footer for birdie on the par-five third.

“I’m just not seeing my lines. It’s just one of those things where I’m struggling seeing the lines,” Woods told reporters Saturday. “The pace has been OK, not great, but my feel is just a little bit off because—whether I’m seeing high lines or low lines, they are just not quite dialed in yet.”

Despite his putting issues, Woods should leave encouraged with his work off the tee. He hit 11 of 14 fairways in the fourth round and hit 67.9 percent of his fairways for the week—a solid total, given drives have often derailed his rounds. Getting to the green and draining putts once he does get there will be the issues for him to fix if he hopes to get back near the top of the leaderboard.

Tiger sits 27th in FedEx Cup points, which means he should easily qualify for the remaining events. This FedEx Cup combined with the PGA Championship is the busiest stretch of golf Woods has played in a half decade, a test of both his body and his game.

This finish ends a stretch of strong play for the former world No. 1. Woods had three top-10s in his last four tournaments, including a second-place outing at the PGA Championship.

Unfortunately for Tiger, his 2018 Northern Trust experience finished Sunday before the leaders were even in their tee box.
