Australia’s conservatives set to secure majority government

Australia‘s ruling centre-right coalition is poised to secure a governing majority in its shock election victory over the centre-left Labor Party, the national broadcaster ABC has projected.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s Liberal-National coalition defied forecasts to be re-elected on Saturday, in what he called a political miracle.

On Monday, ABC’s election analysts projected that Morrison’s coalition will hold at least 77 seats in the 151-member lower house, one more than needed to govern on its own.

Labor, which was widely expected to win the election, is set to claim 68 seats, with independents and minor parties taking six.

The coalition will not hold a majority in the Senate, the upper house, meaning it will need the support of independents and minor parties to pass legislation.

A number of close races across the country were still to be officially decided following Saturday’s vote, with the formal count by the Australian Electoral Commission not expected to conclude until later this week.

The expected result sent Australian banking, property and health-related stocks to an 11-year high on Monday as investors cheered.

Australia PM Scott Morrison returns after tight election (2:37)

Cabinet reshuffle

Among Morrison’s first tasks following his victory was forming a new cabinet after several moderate ministers chose to retire from politics rather than contest the election. The personnel shift will be closely watched for signs of policy changes.

“The cabinet reshuffle will indicate whether he plans to move on polices such as climate change,” aid Rodney Tiffen, emeritus professor of political science at the University of Sydney, told Reuters news agency.

“A big signal will be whether he moves the ministers for environment and energy. If he replaces them with people who have argued for stronger action, it will be marker.”

Morrison has rejected efforts to increase the use of renewables to generate electricity, arguing it would damage the economy which relies on coal-fired power and mining exports.

The coalition has stuck to an official target to cut carbon emissions by 26-28 percent from 2005 levels by 2030, but the United Nations has warned Australia was unlikely to meet this goal.

Labor campaigned on more aggressive targets, aiming to cut carbon emissions by 45 percent by 2030 and reach 50 percent renewable power by 2030.

The re-elected Liberal-led coalition has no renewable energy target beyond 2020

Morrison has indicated he will also make promised income tax cuts a priority once the parliamentary numbers are confirmed.

Labor soul-searching

After a long and bitter election campaign, he said Australians have had enough of politics.

“They’ve had their say, they’ve made their decision. Now they expect us to get on with it so they can get on with their lives,” Morrison told 2GB Radio in Sydney.

“That’s what the quiet Australians have said and I’m going to honour that.”

Morrison’s surprise victory has prompted soul searching within Labor, which was leading all the opinion polls in the two years before Saturday.

“Saturday wasn’t Labor’s night but the sun still came up the next morning,” Bill Shorten, who stepped down as Labor leader on Saturday night after the loss, wrote in The Sydney Morning Herald on Monday.

“The fight goes on and the cause that we champion, equality of opportunity for all Australians, endures. We can’t change the past but we can change the future and that’s what politics is all about.”

That ‘Game of Thrones’ coffee cup has made it to ‘Skyrim’

It’s one of the most prolific accidental cameos in TV history: the rogue coffee cup from Game of Thrones.

HBO may have edited out the mistake, but thanks to two clever mods, the diabolical caffeine receptacle’s memory lives on in Skyrim.

Reported by Kotaku, a mod built for Bethesda’s beloved Elder Scrolls game allows you to replace tankards with the dastardly coffee cup.

As the publisher points out, the request was made in jest on Friday by player DarkMaster06 who asked the Skyrim mods subreddit for a cheeky addition to the great palace in the game’s city of Whiterun.

“Based on the Game of Thrones series, we should add a Starbucks cup to Dragonsreach,” they said.

Two modders immediately jumped on it, and rolled out their own answers to the diabolical request.

No more tankards. Only Skyland Coffee cups.

One, created by a user named johnrose81, is called Skyland Coffee, and replaces all tankards, not just in Dragonsreach but beyond, with coffee cups that resemble those from Starbucks.

“You’ll see it too much. Trust me. I made it and even I got sick of it. It replaces ALL the tankards with this cup,” wrote johnrose81 on Reddit.

“It is funny to walk into a bar, and everyone is drinking coffee. I mean, you really notice how alcoholic everyone is when they’re drinking coffee, and you’re like ‘Man, they drink a lot of coffee.’”

Another neat mod was created by user Sphered, called Mysterious Coffee Cup, which sees a coffee cup added to the Dragonsreach throne room and that of the city of Solitude too.

So, there you go. Even though the blame game for “cupgate” is over, and Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke has provided her own seemingly exonerating evidence to clear her name of all wrongdoing, the cup will not be buried.

Whiterun remembers. The Nords remember.

Kawhi Leonard’s 36 Lead Raptors to Series-Saving Game 3 OT Win vs. Giannis, Bucks

TORONTO, ONTARIO - MAY 19: Kawhi Leonard #2 of the Toronto Raptors drives to the basket against Malcolm Brogdon #13 of the Milwaukee Bucks during the second half in game three of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals at Scotiabank Arena on May 19, 2019 in Toronto, Canada. The Toronto Raptors are on the board in the 2019 Eastern Conference Finals.

Toronto defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 118-112 in a double-overtime thriller in Sunday’s Game 3 at Scotiabank Arena and is now down 2-1 after dropping the first two contests on the road.

Kawhi Leonard (36 points, nine rebounds and five assists) led the way, but he received critical help from supporting-cast members Pascal Siakam (25 points, 11 rebounds and three steals), Norman Powell (19 points) and Marc Gasol (16 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and five blocks).

Even with all that, the Raptors needed two overtimes to win when Siakam missed two free throws in the final 10 seconds of regulation that would have pushed their lead to four. Khris Middleton scored on the other end to tie the game, and Siakam missed a potential game-winning three at the buzzer.

Siakam made up for his crunch-time struggles by drawing Giannis Antetokounmpo’s sixth foul in the second overtime, which allowed Toronto to finally escape with the win. He also blocked Brook Lopez in the final minute of the game with the Raptors nursing a two-point lead before Leonard pushed the advantage to four on the other end.

Antetokounmpo finished with just 12 points on 5-of-16 shooting, although he grabbed 23 rebounds to go with seven assists and four blocks. George Hill led the Bucks in scoring with 24 points, while Malcolm Brogdon added 20 off the bench.

What’s Next?

The series continues with Tuesday’s Game 4 in Toronto.

US to reveal economic part of Palestine peace plan in Bahrain

The United States will co-host an economic “workshop” with Bahrain to encourage investment in the occupied Palestinian territories “that could be made possible by a peace agreement”, the White House said on Sunday.

“Peace to Prosperity will facilitate discussions on an ambitious, achievable vision and framework for a prosperous future for the Palestinian people and the region,” said the statement

The June 25-26 conference in Manama is expected to bring together government, business and civil leaders to gather support for potential economic investments and initiatives that could be possible with a peace agreement, the statement said.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly touted his plan for peace between Palestinians and Israelis as the “deal of the century”.

But Palestinian officials have rebuked the US effort, which they believe will be heavily biased in favour of Israel. The peace plan has been put together without participation from the Palestinians.

Core political issues

Trump’s Middle East team, led by his son-in-law Jared Kushner and regional envoy Jason Greenblatt, appear to initially focus on the potential economic benefits of the plan, despite deep scepticism among experts that they can succeed where decades of US-backed efforts have failed.

Kushner has declined to say whether the plan will include a two-state solution, a key goal of other peace efforts.

“Economic progress can only be achieved with a solid economic vision and if the core political issues are resolved,” said Kushner in a statement on Sunday. “We look forward to presenting our vision on ways to bridge the core political issues very soon.”

He added: “The Palestinian people, along with all people in the Middle East, deserve a future with dignity and the opportunity to better their lives.”

‘Typical Trump playbook’

Al Jazeera’s Patty Culhane in Washington said the annoucment “is really just following the typical Trump playbook when it comes to foreign affairs”, which is to point out the economic benefits of whatever political or diplomatic change the White House wants.

It is not a strategy that has worked elsewhere, she pointed out, such as North Korea.

She said that Kuchner is expected to invite treasury secretaries and finance ministers from all over the world to the June event.

“They say they want to focus on four areas, one is infrastructure, other industry, empowering and investing in people and reforming the government for the Palestinian people.

“This is an administration that has taken hundreds of millions of dollars away from the Palestinians in the form of aid to the Palestinians and to the United Nations. So their request that other countries replace that money, well it remains to be seen how well that’s going to be received.”

US officials had said earlier the peace plan would be rolled out after the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which ends in early June.

However, the announcement of the investors workshop appears to set the stage for a sequenced release of the plan, starting with the economic plan in late June, and later, at some time not yet clear, the political proposals.

Buttigieg finds friends on Fox as he calls out ‘grotesque’ Trump attacks

Mayor Pete Buttigieg

2020 elections

His remarks, at a Fox News town hall, emphasized his unorthodox approach to the 2020 campaign.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg shrugged off insults President Donald Trump has lobbed at him over Twitter and in a recent interview, saying he just didn’t care.

The comments by Buttigieg came Sunday evening during a live town hall event in New Hampshire hosted by Fox News’ Chris Wallace on his network. Earlier in the day the president tweeted that “Fox is moving more and more to the losing (wrong) side in covering the Dems. They got dumped from the Democrats boring debates, and they just want in.”

Story Continued Below

But Buttigieg said that didn’t get under his skin.

“The tweets are … I don’t care,” Buttigieg said, triggering applause from the audience at Stevens High School. “It’s a very effective way to command the attention of the media and I think that we need to make sure that we’re changing the channel from this show that he’s created. Because what matters — and I get it, look, it’s mesmerizing and hard for anyone to look away. Me too. It is the nature of grotesque things that you can’t look away.”

The comments and the the loud applause came during one of the more lively exchanges in the wide-ranging event, which also featured biographical footage of the mayor from Indiana. It also underscored the approach Buttigieg has taken in dealing with Trump and Fox News, an approach that contrasts with some other Democratic presidential candidates.

By appearing on Fox News, Buttigieg — who’s quickly risen from an almost complete unknown to one of the top-tier Democratic 2020 candidates — further introduced himself to an audience that might otherwise not know him.

Buttigieg is one of the few 2020 prominent Democratic presidential candidates to do a Fox News town hall so far, following in the footsteps of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Others, most notably Sen. Elizabeth Warren, have declined to participate in a town hall with the network, which has traditionally been unsympathetic to liberals. The Democratic National Committee has said it will not hold debates on Fox News.

A day before the town hall, Buttigieg sent out a fundraising email titled, “Why I’m going on Fox News” saying: “If we ignore the viewers of Fox News and every news platform that doesn’t share our worldview, we will surrender our ability to speak directly to millions of American voters.”

Buttigieg, in responding to Wallace’s question about Trump’s tweet, generalized the scope of his response.

“Every time that we’re looking at the show and the latest tweet and the latest insult, what we’re not looking at is the fact that we’re the ones trying to get you a raise and they’re the ones blocking it,” Buttigieg said of Democrats working in opposition to the Trump administration.

“We’re the ones trying to preserve your healthcare and they’re the ones trying to take it away,“ Buttigieg said. “We are the ones who are actually prepared to deliver on something like paid family leave and they’re against it. Their positions, as a general rule, are unpopular, and as we focus on what’s going to happen in your life. In other words if we make it less about him or about you, paradoxically, I think that’s actually the best way to defeat him.”

Buttigieg also criticized some of the more prominent hosts on the network.

“The other thing we’ve got to do is we’ve got to find people where they are. A lot of folks in my party were critical of me for even doing this. And I get where that’s coming from,” Buttigieg said.

“I mean when you’ve got Tucker Carlson saying immigrants make America dirty … you’ve got Laura Ingraham comparing detention centers with children in cages to summer camps. Summer. Camps. Then there is a reason why anybody has to swallow hard and think twice before participating in this media ecosystem.”

To someone who doesn’t regularly watch Fox News, the setting might have been surprising. The audience was receptive to some of the most liberal lines Buttigieg offered and despite some crosstalk between the host and the South Bend mayor, the interactions were fairly cordial.

The discussion also touched on abortion, when Buttigieg was asked how he would protect reproductive rights as president. That question came a few days after Alabama enacted a highly restrictive abortion law that top Republican Party leaders have said goes further in some respects than they would prefer.

Buttigieg, in answering the abortion question, did not refrain from offering his support for abortion rights.

“Being a Democrat with pro-choice values who lives and governs in Indiana I get that there are lots of passionate views on this … Even some of my supporters believe differently than I believe,” Buttigieg said. “But that’s what I believe and I believe that the next president needs to be ready to protect those rights. First of all, and the simplest thing, is appointing judges and justices who recognize that that is part of American freedom. Another is to make sure that we’re not starving America of resources — not just for that kind of reproductive care, abortion care.”

Trump himself, in an interview taped before the town hall on Fox News with Steve Hilton, was asked about Buttigieg running as an openly gay candidate. Trump said he didn’t care about the mayor’s sexuality but still snickered at pronouncing the South Bend mayor’s name.

Google reportedly cuts off Huawei’s Android license

Image: Ng Han Guan/AP/REX/Shutterstock

By Adam Rosenberg

Be nervous if you’re a Huawei customer.

Google has reportedly stopped doing business with the Chinese tech company behind the P-series and Mate-series smartphones. Functionally, the revoked Android license means delayed Google updates and, for Huawei’s future devices, no access to apps like Gmail or the Play Store.

Reuters first reported the news via unnamed sources on Sunday afternoon, and The Verge followed up a couple hours later with — again, anonymously sourced — confirmation.

The move from Google comes in the midst of an ongoing trade war between the United States and China. It was likely prompted by an executive order Donald Trump signed on Wednesday that bars U.S. businesses from using telecommunications equipment made by companies that pose a national security risk.

With the license cut off, Huawei would only have access to the open source version of Android (or AOSP, for Android Open Source Project). Think of it as a more limited version of Google’s operating system. Security updates arrive later and core Google apps and services aren’t available.

This means no access to the Google Play Store, a critical gateway to the safest and most secure form of Android’s app ecosystem. It’s a significant threat to Huawei’s smartphone business outside of China.

The specifics of how this will play out and materially affect Huawei customers isn’t clear just yet. The news isn’t even technically official at this point; neither Google nor Huawei has commented, though Mashable did reach out to both for a statement.
