‘I forget he’s even there’: Bill Shine fights small battles in Trump’s media war

White House

The White House’s new communications director is leaning on strategies that helped him succeed at Fox News.

Bill Shine, the White House communications director, has been on the job for almost two months. But he has yet to set up a voicemail greeting on his government-issued phone, still jokes that he doesn’t know his way to the nearest bathroom in the West Wing, often has to step out of meetings when classified information is being discussed for lack of proper security clearances, and claims he doesn’t even have a permanent office.

When a reporter spotted him behind his desk and, pointing to his nameplate on the door, commented on the fact that he had finally procured an office, Shine replied: “It’s not an office, it’s just a sign.”

Story Continued Below

The “I just got here” schtick is markedly different from the way other newcomers have behaved when joining the Trump administration carrying high expectations of turning things around.

Shine’s method appears to be to elongate his grace period, in part because he hates attention. In a world where President Donald Trump makes everyone in his orbit famous – and where many aides actively seek out that reflected glow – Shine is staying in the shadows, drawing out his newcomer status, according to more than half a dozen White House officials and people close to the administration.

One person close to the White House noted that two months since Shine stepped into the vacuum left by the departure last winter of Hope Hicks, not much seems to have changed at the White House. “I forget he’s even there,” this person said.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley, however, disputed that characterization. “The fact he doesn’t know where the bathroom is, or doesn’t have a permanent office, does not mean he’s starting slow,” Gidley said. “He’s had an immediate impact in this building.”

As for any grace period, Gidley laughed at the suggestion. “Your grace period lasts as long as it takes to get you through the door,” he said. “Then you’re expected to perform at a high level, and Bill Shine has done that from Day One.”

Shine, who helped the late Roger Ailes build a conservative media empire at Fox News, is used to hanging back and flattering big egos. He managed to stay in Ailes’ good graces for decades despite the Fox founder’s deep paranoia and longstanding practice of pushing out suspected rivals. The same dynamic appears to be at play inside the West Wing. While keeping a low public profile, Shine’s “really hit it off” with Trump in private, said one person familiar with the relationship.

His invisible hand is perhaps most noticeable in optics. White House officials said he is often working behind the scenes with advance staff to stage events in the White House.

But he’s maintained his mostly back-seat approach during an incredibly difficult stretch for Trump — last week, for instance, within the course of one tumultuous hour, Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort was found guilty on eight counts, while his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to violating campaign finance laws and even pointed the finger at the president.

Shine’s biggest involvement that day, according to a White House aide, was to help prep the president for an interview with Fox News host Ainsley Earhardt, which included working with the president to choose the breezy, sunlit location in the Rose Garden.

Shine has not been involved in overseeing any of the messaging around Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings, which are being overseen by deputy press secretary Raj Shah, according to a person involved. He was reportedly just as blindsided as White House counsel Don McGahn was when Trump tweeted out his departure this week, a blast that created some confusion about whether McGahn had been pushed out, or was leaving on his own terms.

Shine doesn’t always sit in on the president’s interviews with reporters, as Hicks did. For instance, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and digital aide Dan Scavino were the only White House officials in the Oval Office on Thursday, when Trump granted an hourlong interview to Bloomberg News – off-the-record portions of which were subsequently leaked to the Toronto Star.

One of the White House officials, however, compared Shine’s out-of-the-limelight and off-the-record approach to how Hicks conducted herself when she occupied the communications job.

Still, a year and a half into Trump’s tenure, nobody has shown the ability to manage the White House communications shop. Not Sean Spicer, who held the title both of communications director and press secretary at the outset of the Trump administration, nor his successor Mike Dubke, who lasted just three months. Scaramucci lasted 11 days. While Hicks stepped into the role after Scaramucci’s departure, she never tried to corral the larger press shop and played a significant role internally, mostly in helping to manage the president.

Despite his disinterest in the spotlight, Shine does have lofty goals of eventually reshaping the president’s communications team, according to another White House aide. He wants to transform it from one with a tight-lipped, do-no-harm ethos into an engine that drives a more aggressive message. He has quietly begun interviewing aides from the Republican National Committee and GOP offices on Capitol Hill to replenish the White House communications team and soliciting advice from associates about who he should bring into the White House, according to two people familiar with his plans.

Shine will have a helping hand from his old boss, Rupert Murdoch, who has been doing his share of recruiting from in and outside the ranks of News Corporation — though it is not clear whether the two are coordinating with each other. “You want to go down there and fix things there like you did here?” the media mogul has asked at least one Fox News executive, referring to the White House, according to a person familiar with the conversations.

Though Murdoch forced Shine out of Fox News last year for his role in handling sexual harassment scandals that roiled the network, they are now back in touch, according to two people familiar with their relationship. Murdoch also speaks frequently to both the president and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and the president asked for Murdoch’s input before offering Shine the job last month. Murdoch said he had no problem with the hire, according to two people familiar with the conversation.

Shine’s addition to the White House helped to formalize the pre-existing bonds between the president and his favorite television network. He and the president share a mutual friend in Sean Hannity, Fox News’ Trump-loving prime time host. Shine was Hannity’s first executive producer, and Hannity helped ease the relationship between the president by bringing Shine to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club, where the three gabbed, among other things, about what they view as the anti-Trump bias of Fox News anchor Shepard Smith.

As the president has used Fox News to broadcast his message across the country, Murdoch, who spoke with Trump virtually every day during the first year of his presidency, has, at the president’s request, submitted favored candidates to sit on the boards of the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission.

“Rupert extracts, he doesn’t insert,” said one Fox News executive, adding that the media mogul presses the president and his family for information and has even gotten Trump to sit for interview with his publications — but has offered the president little in return.

It was Murdoch, for instance, who was responsible for Trump sitting down with The Sun during his most recent trip abroad, an interview that left Trump’s traveling press team cleaning up the fallout after he accused British prime minister Theresa May of “wrecking” Brexit by ignoring his advice, and said that a soft Brexit “will probably kill the deal.”

While major personnel changes are unlikely before the November’s midterm elections, several Trump allies in and outside the White House said they expect them soon afterwards. Shah, who has decamped from the West Wing to manage press Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation from the Old Executive Office Building, has told colleagues he plans to depart after the confirmation hearings in September.

And White House aides say Shine is eyeing a replacement for White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, who has long been rumored to be interested in leaving the administration by the end of the year.

“They want someone playing offense,” said another person close to the White House. “He wants someone setting the agenda.” Shine is said to be eyeing State Department spokeswoman — and former Fox News anchor — Heather Nauert, although she has repeatedly said she has no interest in taking the job, and the two have never discussed it.

Shine himself has already succeeded, exceeding the benchmark he set for himself in brief on-the-record comments he made just five days after starting his new job. “I need to get to at least 12 so I can beat The Mooch,” he told Piers Morgan, who was interviewing the president for the Daily Mail in July.

For Trump, however, the jury is always still out – even with aides who don’t steal his spotlight and who he likes personally. The president has already begun soliciting feedback on Shine’s performance from friends and associates, with his signature line: “So, what do you think of Bill?”

Ariana Grande Beautifully Belted ‘Natural Woman’ At Aretha Franklin’s Funeral: Watch

Getty Images

Ariana Grande celebrated Aretha Frankin‘s life and legacy on Friday (August 31) with a powerful tribute at the late singer’s funeral service. Taking the stage at Detroit’s Greater Grace Temple, Grande brought her A-game to a moving performance of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” a beloved hit from the Queen of Soul, who died earlier this month at age 76 after battling pancreatic cancer.

Singing a Franklin classic in front of the late icon’s family and friends was no doubt a daunting task, but Grande handled it with grace, keeping her usual verbal gymnastics in check to deliver a beautiful, faithful rendition. She was backed by a small group of soulful backup singers, and moved several members of the crowd — which included her fiancé, Pete Davidson, and former President Bill Clinton — to sing along. Grande’s ex and Detroit native Big Sean even gave her a sweet standing ovation.

After Grande’s performance, Bishop Charles H. Ellis III, who co-officiated the ceremony, joked about the 25-year-old’s inclusion in the service. “When I saw Ariana Grande on the program, I thought that was a new something at Taco Bell,” he hilariously quipped, as the singer and the rest of the congregation laughed. He sweetly added, “Girl, let me give you all your respect. Did you all enjoy this icon? She’s an icon herself.” Grande, for her part, added a simple, “We love you, Aretha” before trotting off stage.

Grande — who joined a star-studded list of performers that included Stevie Wonder, Faith Hill, and Jennifer Hudson — was asked to sing at the funeral after Franklin’s family was moved by her emotional rendition of “Natural Woman” on The Tonight Show earlier this month. On the show, Grande recounted her memories of meeting Franklin, saying, “I met her a few times. We sang at the White House, and she was so sweet, and she was so cute. I was like, ‘How are you a real person?’ It’s an honor to have met her, and we’re gonna celebrate her.”

She definitely did just that. Revisit Grande’s Tonight Show tribute below.

IMF vows ‘full support’ for Argentina amid economic crisis

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has pledged its “full support” for Argentina as the country seeks to overcome an ongoing economic crisis that has prompted a world-record interest rate hike and seen the value of the peso plunge to a record low against the dollar.

Gerry Rice, the IMF’s chief spokesperson, said in a statement on Friday that a delegation from the Washington, DC-based body would meet with Argentine officials next week to agree on a “revised economic plan” following President Mauricio Macri’s request this week for an early release of funds from a $50bn bailout package agreed to in June.

“We are confident that the strong commitment and determination of the Argentine authorities will help the country overcome the current difficulties,” Rice said.

His comments came a day after students and university professors rallied in the capital, Buenos Aires, to protest against austerity measures – including education budget cuts – tied to the IMF package.

Many Argentines are wary of the body after its perceived role in the country’s worst ever financial crisis, during 2001-2002, which left one out of every five people unemployed and thrust millions into poverty.

In May, a survey of more than 1,000 people by Argentine pollsters D’Alessio Irol/Berensztein revealed that 75 percent of respondents felt seeking assistance from the IMF was problematic.

On Friday morning, the peso rallied slightly after a disastrous Thursday which saw it drop by 13.5 percent against the dollar by the time markets closed, marking a 53 percent loss in value since the beginning of the year.

In a bid to arrest the decline, Argentina’s Central Bank has raised the country’s interest rate from 45 to 60 percent – the world’s highest.

The government is expected to announce further economic measures at the beginning of next week.

‘Political blowback’

The economic crisis, which worsened after Macri said on Wednesday he had reached a deal with the IMF for accelerated payouts, has spooked investors and prompted public protests.

The General Confederation of Labour, the country’s largest labour union, has called for general strikes in late September over the government’s economic policies.

Argentina has agreed with the IMF to cut its fiscal deficit to 1.3 percent of gross domestic product by 2019, down from 3.9 percent last year, resulting in cutbacks including slashed energy subsidies and the freezing of some government salaries.

Fiona Mackie, the Economist Intelligence Unit’s regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean, warned the country’s attempt at a “rapid” economic adjustment could prove “painful”.

“Recession could be deep, and political risk will spike amid dwindling confidence at home,” she said in a Twitter post on Thursday.

The economic problems and Macri’s alignment with the IMF have cast doubt over his chances of re-election in next year’s polls.

Monica de Bolle, a senior fellow at the US-based Peterson Institute for International Economics, questioned on Thursday whether there will be a “big political blowback” during the vote with “risks on the rise” ahead of the ballot in October 2019.

Argentina just raised interest rates to whopping 60 percent to contain the peso plunge. A big political blowback coming in 2019? Risks on the rise.

— Monica de Bolle (@bollemdb) August 30, 2018

Macri’s Chief Cabinet Minister Marcos Pena, meanwhile, said on Thursday that Argentina was “not facing economic failure”.

“This is a transformation, not failure. In that transformation there are difficult moments,” Pena told a Council of the Americas meeting in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires.

Argentina, Latin America’s third-largest economy, currently has an unemployment rate of about nine percent.

According to the World Bank, more than 28 percent of its some 43 million people live in poverty.

Dwyane Wade Rumors: Heat Legend ‘Seems Inclined to Play’ This Season

While there is still no official word, Dwyane Wade will reportedly be back with the Miami Heat for the 2018-19 season.

Per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, one person with the Heat and another person who has spoken with Wade believe the 12-time All-Star “seems inclined” to play the upcoming season.

Wade has been biding his time this summer deciding whether or not he is going to return for his 16th year in the NBA

The future Hall of Famer told reporters on July 30 his family would play an integral role in the decision he made:

“My son is a junior in high school right now. Every decision at this point, especially in a professional athlete’s career, at 36 years old, a lot of it surrounds around their families and what is best for their family. So I am really invested into making sure that my sons can have every tool that they need to be able to succeed at this game of basketball and game of life.”

After starting the 2017-18 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Wade was traded to the Heat in February. The three-time NBA champion finished the year strong, averaging 12 points in 21 games off the bench.

Miami won the Southeast Division with a 44-38 record before losing to the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the playoffs.

IPVanish review: A VPN that gets the job done

Minimalist • intuitive design • P2P availability • Does not keep user logs

Slow download speeds • No Netflix • Lacks advanced security features

IPVanish is a passable VPN service, but its speed isn’t great and it doesn’t do enough to stand out from the crowd.

How does a VPN (virtual private network) stand out from the crowd today? With privacy concerns and a sheer number of quality options, even great VPNs may not get the attention they deserve.

Perhaps the best approach is a minimalist design with a bit of flair and backed by advanced security features. That way, the newcomer will feel at home using the default setting and know they are getting the privacy they seek. As they get comfortable, they can learn how to switch servers or experiment with other options.

SEE ALSO: The cheapest VPN services in 2018: Get a VPN from £2.10 per month

Advanced users can tailor their experience right away and turn on any features they need to feel secure. The flair is just there because we’re all suckers for a bit of personality with our apps.

IPVanish eschews most of that for a basic experience. There’s value in the service and the actual VPN service works, but will you give IPVanish a chance?

A throwback

All VPNs need to do one thing and one thing well. Everyone connecting to the internet needs to do so through an Internet Service Provider (ISP). However, that means all of our online activity is in some way recorded by our ISP, and the door is wide open for those companies to use it for marketing purposes.

A VPN, however, will route your internet traffic through their servers instead of your ISP’s. This effectively masks your activity and location — perfect for anyone seeking a bit of true privacy.

The first thing I notice when using IPVanish is the almost retro feel of the app. It’s rocking a dark theme of green, black, and gray. There are hints of white and the Disconnect button is distinctly red. Good calls, color-wise.

No fun map greets you to let you know where your VPN server is located. No cute naming conventions. Just vanilla drop-down menus and country flags. The only visual flair comes in the form of an active graph of your VPN activity. It feels dated, but I don’t mind that. And you shouldn’t either if you’re seeking a VPN that just works.

With IPVanish, what you see is what you get.

With IPVanish, what you see is what you get.

I do give credit to IPVanish for a brief tutorial. It’s minimal in detail, but provides the gist of what the app has to offer. You’ll learn about what a VPN is, how it routes your IP address through a server to mask your location, and how to select different servers. Simple, yet effective.

Everything you need can be found in the main menu. IPVanish defaults to a Quick Connect option to find the fastest server available. If you want to be specific about it, heading to the Server button reveals the global network of available servers. Some countries are better represented than others, which is standard for VPN services. The bulk of IPVanish’s servers are located in the United States with the UK a distant second, just ahead of the Netherlands.

While I mostly want a lightweight VPN service on my phone, I want a similar, seamless app experience for my Chromebook. I know it’s not the coolest device around, but it’s a solid and cheap workhorse. I can open it up, surf the web or edit some Google Docs. As my faithful web browsing device, I definitely want to cover my tracks on my Chromebook.

SEE ALSO: The best VPN for Netflix in 2018: Deals and how to watch American Netflix in the UK

Most VPN services have an app for a Chromebook, but it’s not the same as the one you may download for a PC or Mac. VPN services typically use a proxy system to mask your web activity on a Chromebook. There’s a subtle, but distinct, difference between the two offerings.

VPNs do everything to mask your IP address by encrypting your data and funneling it through their server. Proxies don’t encrypt your data and act more as a relay system so you can quickly bypass any regional restrictions.

Instead of an app, I was greeted by a visual guide. I was told to head to my settings and change my connection to a default IPVanish server. It was simple and took no time to connect to IPVanish. There were even screenshots in case you were uncertain of the next step.

While everything worked, it was still a little underwhelming. This is how you set up your printer at work, not a VPN at home in 2018. We’ve gotten spoiled with the plethora of VPN services with minimalist apps and a simple button to turn the whole thing on. When there are so many options out there, having to manually install your VPN may be a non-starter for Chromebook users.

Private enough

I’ve been spoiled by features on other VPNs. Both TunnelBear and NordVPN have multiple options within their respective Android apps.

IPVanish has just one additional security feature: Scramble. You can toggle the option to make your VPN activity look more like regular internet activity. This is a great feature to bypass stricter regulations and should be used by anyone in a country with restrictive internet laws.

And that’s it, feature-wise. There are a few additional security options, but they’re limited to auto start and connection preferences.

There are other major considerations when finding the right VPN for you. First, you need to look for leaks. If any data escapes from the VPN’s encrypted tunnel, you’re exposed. Any website you visit requests your IP address and the website should receive the new IP address from the VPN and not from your ISP. If that happens, you have a domain network service (DNS) leak.

PVanish has just one additional security feature: Scramble.

Finding a DNS leak requires a quick online test. If the DNS leak test reveals two servers, you’re leaking data. I found there were no DNS leaks while using IPVanish across all my devices.

Another important privacy feature is the company behind the service. All VPNs have a privacy policy and some are way better than others. IPVanish claims to have a no logs meaning they don’t store any personally identifiable data.

Diving further into the policy, IPVanish states the only data collected from the website is used to verify a user’s account and payment method. That’s all great with one caveat. IPVanish’s parent company is headquartered in the United States, which has intelligence agreements with other countries. The Five Eyes Alliance is an agreement between the U.S., the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand to share intelligence. If a VPN service is located in one of these countries, it could be compelled to send any data it has.

There are also conflicting reports of IPVanish handing over data despite the no-log policy. This was the result of a criminal complaint that was first surfaced on Reddit. StackPath, IPVanish’s parent company, states this occurred in 2016 and before StackPath acquired Highwinds Network Group. StackPath reiterated IPVanish follows a strict no-log policy, and it’s apparently been run as a new company since the acquisition, for whatever that’s worth.

We need to talk about speed

Better privacy and security are the primary purposes for any VPN service, but speed counts, too. If your website is loading slower than molasses, what’s the point? IPVanish touts itself as the best VPN and the world’s fastest VPN.

Well, about that.

I pay for 50Gbps download speed from my ISP. Using IPVanish, I noticed significant speed drops on two different servers for my Chromebook. After seeing download speeds in the teens for the default server, I switched to another server in the U.S. Download and upload speeds were better, but still a significant drop from my standard service.

I experienced the same disappointing speeds on my MacBook Air. I was sent to a server in Las Vegas and experienced a massive drop in download and upload speeds. I switched to their Ashburn location and speeds were better, but still lower than my regular download speed.

Las Vegas server speed

Las Vegas server speed

Ashburn server speed

Ashburn server speed

UK download speed was fine, but it was another 30+ Mbps drop in upload speed. The Netherlands server fared worse.

UK server speed

UK server speed

Netherlands server speed

Netherlands server speed

What about Netflix? You can usually forgive all VPN sins if it lets you bypass Netflix’s security. Unfortunately, IPVanish was unable to slip through.

Just another VPN

To be sure, IPVanish did its job and provided a VPN option. The app was minimal, but intuitive. The services were all there. It just fell short of other services. There’s just so much competition out there that when you’re figuring out if IPVanish is worth its monthly fee, the service will leave many wanting more.

Having thousands of available servers, P2P availability, and a no-log policy are all worthwhile features. IPNVanish is a good place to start your search for a quality VPN, but it might not your final choice.

Aaron Donald, Rams Reportedly Finalizing Record 6-Year, $135M Contract

Defensive tackle Aaron Donald has been one of the best players in the NFL during the first four years of his career, and the Los Angeles Rams rewarded him with a new deal Friday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Donald and the Rams are on the verge of finalizing a six-year, $135 million extension, which includes $87 million in guaranteed money. The deal will make Donald the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.

Despite holding out this summer, Donald is expected to be ready to play in Los Angeles’ season opener on Sept. 10 against the Oakland Raiders.

While he ultimately earned the contract, Donald held out each of the last two years and saw wide receiver Brandin Cooks and running back Todd Gurley sign extensions with the team before him earlier this offseason.

In April, Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times reported Donald wasn’t expected at the team’s voluntary offseason workouts until he received a new contract. Klein noted he was looking for more than $20 million per season.

“The goal is still the same,” general manager Les Snead said at the time, per Klein. “Make Aaron Donald a Ram for a long, long time.”

Adam Schefter of ESPN then reported in July, “There is a belief from some around the league that, no matter the fines or the effect on his free agency, Aaron Donald will not play another down on his existing contract. In other words, his holdout is likely to last until a new deal comes along.”

Donald also skipped the Rams’ organized team workouts and training camp before the 2017 campaign with a holdout that lasted until September, and Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk explained two straight holdouts impacted his status moving forward.

The collective bargaining agreement states players are only credited with a season toward free agency as long as they report to camp by the 30th day before the regular season. Since Donald didn’t do that two years in a row, he has three years of credit even with 2018 being his fifth in the league, which would have made him a restricted free agent instead of an unrestricted one next offseason before this contract.

Even with those concerns, Florio reported on Aug. 26 the Rams were “on the verge of a deal that will make him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history” and added “the contract will be in the neighborhood of $22 million per year, with as much as $80 million guaranteed.”

The 27-year-old ultimately played last season and earned his fourth straight Pro Bowl nod with 11 sacks and a career-best five forced fumbles.

Donald was in line to make approximately $6.9 million in 2018 with his fifth-year option of his rookie deal.

That type of payday doesn’t match up with Donald’s head-turning production since the Rams selected him with the No. 13 overall pick in 2014.

NFL @NFL

Aaron. Donald. Is. Unstoppable. #MobSquad #LAvsAZ https://t.co/W9CwWSkEu6

Donald didn’t miss a game and was a Pro Bowler in each of his first three seasons, won the 2014 Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year, won the 2017 Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year and is a three-time member of the First Team All-Pro.

He notched nine sacks as a rookie, 11 in his second season and eight in 2016 as a defensive menace who consistently generates pressure in opposing quarterbacks’ faces and either tallies the sack himself or creates rush lanes for his teammates.

What’s more, he is still just 27 years old and figures to be a critical cog in the Los Angeles defense for years to come.

Now Donald will attempt to bring the franchise its first Super Bowl title since the 1999 campaign.

McCain lies in state as tributes flow

John McCain lies in state at the Capitol.

Friday marked the first day of two days of tributes to John McCain by official Washington, a gesture on a scale normally given to a president. | M. Scott Mahaskey/POLITICO

‘This is one of the bravest souls our nation has ever produced,’ said Speaker Paul Ryan.

John McCain’s last visit to Washington began with a military honor guard carrying the body of the late Arizona Republican into the Capitol, where his former colleagues paid their final respects to the longtime senator, GOP presidential nominee and war hero.

With dozens of current and former senators and members and McCain’s family in attendance — including McCain’s 106-year-old mother, Roberta — Vice President Mike Pence, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker Paul Ryan hailed the 81-year-old senator as a uniquely, unmistakably American figure.

Story Continued Below

“Generations of Americans will continue to marvel at the man who lies before us,” McConnell said. “The cocky, handsome naval aviator who barely scraped through school, and then fought for freedom in the skies. Who witnessed to our highest values even through terrible torture, and who became a generational leader in the United States Senate, where our nation airs its great debates.”

“This is one of the bravest souls our nation has ever produced,” added Ryan.

Friday marked the first day of two days of tributes to McCain by official Washington, a gesture on a scale normally given to a president. On Saturday, former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush will offer eulogies at a funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. McCain’s body will be laid to rest on Sunday at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in a private ceremony.

Yet conspicuously absent from Friday’s ceremony was President Donald Trump, who had a testy — at best — relationship with McCain. Trump was scheduled to travel to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, White House chief of staff John Kelly, and Kellyanne Conway, a top Trump adviser, led a group of senior administration officials who traveled to Capitol Hill for the ceremony.

Other luminaries who attended the service included: Mitt Romney, a former GOP presidential nominee and current Senate candidate; Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey; Rick Scott, governor of Florida and current Senate candidate; Henry Kissinger; former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge; and Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, among others.

12 Moments In BTS’ ‘Idol’ Music Video You Might Have Missed

BigHit Entertainment

Global sensations BTS recently dropped their newest music video for “Idol,” a song that celebrates the K-pop group’s accomplishments, their fan ARMY’s unconditional love, and most importantly, their self-identity. So many fans have savored the vibrant video’s every frame that it broke YouTube’s record for the biggest 24-hour debut.

This is in large part because ARMY sleuths know that the Bangtan boys’ striking visuals aren’t simply for show, but contain deeper meaning for their fans to decipher. With that in mind, here are things that you may have missed in “Idol.”

  1. They’ve recreated scenes from previous music videos

The video is filled with references to their past work, an homage to the group’s journey thus far. “Idol” opens on the seven members sitting around a table, which recalls the dinner scene from 2016’s “Blood Sweat & Tears“:

The second moment looks suspiciously like the formation from “Mic Drop“:

    Then there’s “Dope”:

    DNA“:

    Fire“:

    Not Today“:

And finally, this scene from 2014’s “Just One Day“:

WHO THOUGHT IT WAS OKAY TO HURT OUR FEELINGS LIKE THIS#AnswerIsHere #AnswerIsComing #IDOL pic.twitter.com/OvUIg8qQMu

    — michelle #IDOL (@jeonglows) August 24, 2018

  2. The cultural significance of the world “Idol”

RM opens with a strong statement: “You can call me artist / You can call me idol / No matter what you call me / I don’t care.” In South Korea, “idol” is used to describe members of K-pop groups, but it often comes with a derogatory slant, as some say that idols aren’t “true artists.” Here, BTS not only embrace the term but are “proud of it.” In fact, you can even catch Suga and Jungkook sitting on a pedestal in a few scenes.

    BigHit Entertainment

  3. The celebration is felt in the lyrics

Throughout the song, there are expressions found in pansori, a form of traditional Korean storytelling between a singer and a drummer. The interjections eulsoo and jihwaja were historically used in Korea to hype up a crowd, and “deong-gi-deok kung-deo-reo-reo” in the chorus mimics the beat of the pansori drumming pattern. RM said in a recent press conference, “There was no right interjection to make ‘Idol’ a celebratory festival, but perhaps it’s having learned pansori as a child, [those chants] came to me naturally.”

  4. RM and V defy the naysayers

RM uses three Snapchat-type filters as he raps, “I know what I am / I know what I want / I never gon’ change.” Fans believe this to be a reference to criticism the rapper received for using filters while live streaming on V Live. Similarly, vocalist V wears glasses that some previously said looked “ugly” on him during a different V Live.

  5. The members’ own drawings adorn the background

In the background, you can see drawings that were personally done by Jimin (a dragon), Jungkook (another dragon), Suga (Shooky, his BT21 character) and Jin (a whale, or kore in Korean). The frames that surround the drawings are made of hands and surveillance cameras, which recall the album’s concept photos. Note that Suga’s drawing of Shooky includes the numbers 13 and 18, which could represent their growth from 2013 (their debut year) to today. It also could be a nod to the numbers mentioned in the rap line’s song “Ddaeng,” which is one of the most powerful hands in the Korean card game Seotda.

  6. Love is all around

In two distinct moments, the backgrounds display the characters for the word “love” in Korean (사랑) and Chinese (爱).

  7. The symbolism behind Jungkook’s cough

Youngest member Jungkook cheekily looks at the camera and coughs, which seems to be a reference to the Yangban, who were historically the elite class in Korea during the Joseon Dynasty. Yangban would cough indiscreetly to announce their presence, silencing those around them. BTS, in this case, are here to silence the haters — with a smile.

  8. V moving through the familiar-looking crowd

As V acknowledges that “I’m facing a new me again today / It’s all me anyway” he shuffles his way through a crowd in a way that looks very similar to the mob of fans BTS routinely amass at airports. And these people that surround him all have red paint across their faces, just like the guards who kept watch over them in their 2013 video for “N.O.”

  9. Sharks and tigers and rabbits, oh my!

The tiger, which features prominently in the video, is a sacred animal in Korean culture, symbolizing the country and its people. It’s also thought of as a brave guardian against foes.

A shark also makes an appearance in the visual, aggressively trying to attack the members as they dance in a glass box. Fans made the connection to an old post on the group’s fan page, when eldest member Jin asked the question, “Tigers are even stronger in water. So who would win if tigers come in and fight with sharks?”

Meanwhile, the image of the rabbit in the moon is a reference to a famous Korean folktale, in which a god honored a selfless rabbit by placing it in the moon. The rabbit also symbolizes immortality. And according to YouTuber David Kim, there is a Korean saying that translates to “the more you are cursed at, the longer you will live.” In this case, BTS could see themselves as the rabbits, indirectly referring to the criticism they’ve faced since their debut.

  10. Multi-cultural choreography

J-Hope confirmed that “this performance mixes African dance with Korean dance.” The key choreography in the chorus is gwara gwara, a South African move that both Rihanna and Childish Gambino have included in their video choreography. Considering that the members (especially V) are fans of Gambino and his song “This Is America,” it’s no wonder they were inspired by its award-winning choreo.

Bonus: Did you catch Jungkook twerking? The moment was very reminiscent of a challenge in BTS’s 2014 show, American Hustle Life, as well as an episode of Run! BTS.

  11. The setting reflects the series’ conclusion

The running theme throughout Love Yourself: Her was about looking outwardly to find love and acceptance. In the similarly bright and colorful visual for “DNA,” BTS dance in an unfinished house, open to their kaleidoscopic surroundings. In the “Fake Love” visual, from Love Yourself: Tear, the same setting is now closed in and rusted, symbolizing how the love they found was corrosive. But in “Idol,” the group has finally found the answer to building a healthy foundation: self-love.

The most prominent setting of the music video is a striking, yellow gyeonghoeru, a Korean-style pavilion once used to entertain special guests. The Chinese symbol at the top of the building (囍) means “double happiness,” and is thought to bring good fortune.

  12. Cheering on with ARMY

In the big Bollywood-style dance break at the end of the video, notice that the members are looking down at the crowd and dancing along in the rafters. They join ARMY in cheering and supporting themselves.
