This Is How Game Of Thrones Ended

HBO

By Valerie Tejeda

Warning: This post contains major spoilers for the series finale of Game of Thrones.

One of the biggest shows that has ever graced our television screens has ended its watch, and the final episode had a little bit of everything that’s made Game of Thrones a must-watch for nearly a decade: death, dragons, and second chances.

Following Daenerys’s reign of fire, Tyrion walks through what’s left of King’s Landing, now covered in ash and the dead bodies of innocent men, women, and children. But the killing, it seems, was not over; Jon and Davos find Grey Worm and the Unsullied in the streets getting ready to kill Lannister soldiers (who have surrendered) by order of their queen. Jon tells Grey Worm to stop, but he doesn’t and it’s evident in that moment that Dany is nowhere near done with the fire and blood.

Meanwhile, Tyrion makes his way through what’s left of the Red Keep and spots Jaime’s golden hand mixed in with a pile of rubble. There he weeps over both Cersei’s and Jaime’s bodies. And in that moment he makes a decision: He can no longer stand by Daenerys as her Hand seeing the carnage she’s inflicted.

HBO

But the Queen doesn’t see anything wrong with her strategy. Speaking to the Unsullied and Dothraki, she promises that “we will not lay down our spears until we have liberated” everyone enslaved around the world. “Will you break the wheel with me?” she asks.

The whole scene is rather ominous and gives us some insight into Daenerys’s future plans of freeing the rest of the world just as she freed those in King’s Landing: with fire and blood. Tyrion approaches and is appalled. “You freed your brother. You committed treason,” Dany says. “I freed my brother, and you slaughtered a city,” he replies, before tossing his Hand pin down the steps. Daenerys orders the Unsullied to take Tyrion away, most likely to his imminent death.

Jon visits Tyrion where he’s being held and in his own roundabout way the Lannister suggests that it’s time for Jon to put an end to Daenerys. “She’ll go on liberating until the people of the world are free, and she rules them all,” he says, adding: “Everywhere she goes, evil men die, and we cheer for it. And she grows more powerful and more sure that she is good, and right. She believes her destiny is to build a better world for everyone. If you believed that, if you truly believed it, wouldn’t you kill whoever stood between you and paradise?”

HBO

Meanwhile, Daenerys enters the Throne Room — which is covered in ash just like the vision back in Season 2 — and sets her sights on the one thing she’s been pining after all these years: the Iron Throne. Jon, however, is lurking in the doorway. He asks for his Queen to show mercy — to the Lannister soldiers who surrendered, to Tyrion — but Dany doesn’t agree. “We can’t hide behind small mercies. The world we need won’t be built by men loyal to the world we had,” she says. “We break the wheel together,” she adds, embracing Jon. “You are my queen, now and always,” he replies, before kissing her and sliding a dagger into her ribs. Daenerys Targaryen, Mother of Dragons, dies in Jon Snow’s arms.

Enter Drogon, who goes completely berserk and sets the Throne Room on fire, melting the Iron Throne to molten steel. He flies off with his mother’s body clutched in one of his massive talons.

And then, a time jump! A few weeks pass and we see Grey Worm lead a captured Tyrion to the Dragonpit, where the remaining lords and ladies of Westeros — Bran, Sansa, Arya, Brienne, Gendry, Davos, Yara, Sam, the new Dorne prince, Edmure Tully, and more — wait. Jon, it appears, is also being held prisoner by the Unsullied following Daenerys’s death. But the decision to keep Jon Snow in chains is not Grey Worm’s to make, according to Tyrion. The embattled lion suggests that the council of lords and ladies should decide on a new king or queen of the Six Kingdoms so that they can decide what to do with Jon.

Tyrion already has someone in mind: Bran Stark.

HBO

“Who has a better story than Bran the Broken?” Tyrion says. “The boy who fell from a high tower and lived. Who knew he’d never walk again, so he learned to fly… From now on, rulers will not be born, they will be chosen on this spot by the lords and ladies of Westeros, to serve the realm.”

But does Bran, the Three-Eyed Raven, even want to rule? “Why do you think I came all this way?” the Stark says, which makes you wonder if he’s been after the throne this entire time.

They all vote unanimously for Bran to be king, except for Sansa who fights for the North to remain a sovereign land — something that not even her brother Robb Stark was able to accomplish. Bran grants Sansa’s wish; the North is now free. And he also appoints Tyrion his new Hand, ensuring that Tyrion will now spend the rest of his life fixing “many terrible mistakes” he made. (Meanwhile, Ser Brienne of Tarth finishes writing Jaime’s story in The Book of Brothers. “He died protecting his queen,” she writes.)

HBO

In order to maintain peace with the Unsullied, who crave justice for their fallen queen, Jon must suffer the harshest fate: a lifetime served in the Night’s Watch. He’ll have no wife, no kids, and no lands, which is enough to please Grey Worm. “Is it right, what I did? It doesn’t feel right,” Jon asks Tyrion, still wrestling with his actions. “Ask me again in 10 years,” Tyrion replies.

With Bran the Broken on the Throne, Jon’s fate sealed in the Night’s Watch, and Sansa claiming her rightful place as the Queen in the North, Arya Stark is ready for her own adventure — and she sets off for the unknown lands west of Westeros, with Needle at her side and the Stark sigil adorning her sails. In many ways, this song of ice and fire ended as it began: with the Starks. Ned Stark would be proud.

Game of Thrones ultimately concludes with Jon, Tormund, and Ghost (now reunited with his Stark!) leading a group of Free Folk further North, beyond the Wall and into the forest. And it seems as though Jon Snow is exactly where he needs to be, as King Bran himself would say.

Huawei reportedly cut off by major chipmakers Intel and Qualcomm

Yet another hurdle for Chinese tech giant Huawei.

Huawei is finding itself in even more of a pickle.

Chipmakers Intel, Qualcomm, Xilinx, and Broadcom have told employees to stop supplying to Huawei until further notice, according to Bloomberg, which cited anonymous sources familiar with the matter.

In another Bloomberg report, Huawei is said to have prepared for a ban by stockpiling chips and other essential components which will allow it to keep running for three months.

The company has reportedly been preparing for a potential supply freeze since the middle of 2018, while designing its own chips to go into phones, laptops, and networking products.

SEE ALSO: Google severed Huawei’s access to key Android apps and services

The suspension comes after Google reportedly cut off Android’s license to the Chinese technology giant, following a Trump executive order to prohibit U.S. businesses from using telecommunications equipment made by companies which pose a national security risk.

The license cut-off means that Huawei would only have access to the open source version of Android (or AOSP, for Android Open Source Project), a limited version of the mobile operating system.

The South China Morning Post reported back in April that Huawei has been developing its own smartphone, tablet, and personal computer operating systems, which would serve as an alternative to the likes of Windows and Android.

Intel offered no comment when asked by Mashable if it had stopped supplying to Huawei.

Qualcomm, Broadcom, Xilinx, and Huawei have also been contacted for further comment.

Bumps, Bruises, Giannis: Kawhi Surviving It All to Get Raptors Back in Series

TORONTO, CANADA - MAY 19: Kawhi Leonard #2 of the Toronto Raptors looks on during a game against the Milwaukee Bucks during Game Three of the Eastern Conference Finals of the 2019 NBA Playoffs on May 19, 2019 at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. With just over three minutes left in the second overtime of Sunday’s Game 3 between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Toronto Raptors, Kawhi Leonard picked up a loose ball, went coast to coast and took off for a lefty slam from well outside the restricted area. Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena erupted, the Raptors went up 108-105 and Kawhi grimaced on his way back to the bench:

Bleacher Report @BleacherReport

KAWHI CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF ✈ https://t.co/8BUx7kSRZS

Leonard’s final stat line in the 118-112 victory? Over a whopping 52 minutes, he scored 36 points, hit 12 of his 13 free throws, grabbed nine boards, handed out five assists, swiped two steals and blocked a shot. He was plus-10 in a game the Raptors won by six.

All that after he suffered an apparent leg injury early in the first quarter, hence the grimace in double-overtime. All that after 37.7 minutes and 31.7 points per game in 14 previous postseason outings. All that amid constant speculation about his impending free agency.

With his team on the verge of a three-game deficit, Kawhi blocked everything out and just hooped. In the fourth quarter and two overtimes alone, Leonard had 19 points, three boards and two steals on 6-of-12 shooting.

“When it’s winning time, Kawhi shows up,” The Athletic’s Dave DuFour tweeted. “That dude is a killer.”

And he does it on both ends. Shortly after the slam described above, Kawhi jumped a passing lane, stole the rock from Khris Middleton and threw it down again:

“First of all, his defense was probably the biggest key of the game,” Raptors head coach Nick Nurse told reporters. “Not only did he just play good, but he made some huge plays with some steals and ripaways and breakaways that were, you know, offense was hard to come by there for both teams for a while, and anytime you can get a steal and a breakout, it’s like, a huge momentum play.”

On top of the huge individual plays, Leonard was a critical part of stopping—or at least slowing down—Giannis Antetokounmpo. He was matched up with him directly on several possessions, and his Raptors teammates were consistently ready to form the kinds of walls that would make Stan Van Gundy proud every time Giannis ventured inside the three-point line.

Together, they made every attempt difficult. Several even hurt the MVP finalist.

With 7:14 left in the fourth quarter on Sunday, Marc Gasol fouled Antetokounmpo under the rim. Before he attempted his free throws, Giannis stood for a few seconds near halfcourt, hunched over with his hands on his knees.

The Raptors took something out of one of the game’s greatest players, holding him to 12 points on 5-of-16 shooting. A player who often seems invincible looked tired. And Toronto, despite needing two overtimes, took some momentum back in the process.

TORONTO, CANADA - MAY 19: Giannis Antetokounmpo #34 of the Milwaukee Bucks drives to the basket against the Toronto Raptors during Game Three of the Eastern Conference Finals of the 2019 NBA Playoffs on May 19, 2019 at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ont

With a chance to tie the series looming Tuesday, Leonard finally got a little help. If Gasol and Pascal Siakam can repeat what they gave on Sunday, and Kyle Lowry—who was plus-15 before he fouled out—can recapture the magic he had in Game 1, Toronto has a good chance to tie this series up at two games apiece before it heads back to Milwaukee.

After going a combined 3-of-20 in the first two games, Gasol told the NBA on TNT crew he’d felt sick over his performance for the last 48 hours. His 16 points, 12 boards, seven assists and five blocks on 5-of-10 shooting should be good medicine.

Siakam bounced back, as well. He went 10-of-29 in Milwaukee, but he had 25 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and a block while shooting 9-of-18 from the field Sunday night.

What has to be scary for the Raptors, though, is that it took all of this to squeak out a double-overtime victory at home. If Gasol or Siakam isn’t quite this good, or if Giannis breaks through on a couple more drives, the Bucks have a commanding 3-0 lead.

Toronto will have to be at least this effective for three of the next five games to advance to the NBA Finals.

The Raptors, however, have been able to count on Kawhi this entire postseason. Injuries, fatigue, rumors? It doesn’t matter what’s surrounding him. He’s been a machine since this playoff run began.

After Sunday’s game, Leonard’s postseason averages stand at 32.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.2 threes and 1.3 steals. Whether he’s hampered or not, the Raptors are going to need every bit of that production to upset the Bucks.

“I think he’s OK,” Nurse said when asked about his star player’s health. “That was a lot of minutes, but I think he’s OK.”

Google ‘suspends some business with Huawei’ after US blacklist

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has reportedly suspended some of its business with Huawei, in a potential big blow to the Chinese technology giant that the government of the United States has sought to blacklist around the world.

The suspension involves the transfer of hardware, software and technical services except those publicly available via open source licensing, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters news agency on Sunday.

Holders of current Huawei smartphones with Google apps, however, will continue to be able to use and download app updates provided by Google, a Google spokesperson said, confirming earlier reporting by Reuters.

“We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications,” the Google spokesperson said.

“For users of our services, Google Play and the security protections from Google Play Protect will continue to function on existing Huawei devices,” the spokesperson said, without giving further details.

The suspension could hobble Huawei’s smartphone business outside China as the company will immediately lose access to updates to Google’s Android operating system. Future versions of Huawei smartphones that run on Android will also lose access to popular services, including the Google Play Store and Gmail and YouTube apps.

“Huawei will only be able to use the public version of Android and will not be able to get access to proprietary apps and services from Google,” the source said.

The Trump administration on Thursday added Huawei Technologies Co Ltd to a trade blacklist, immediately enacting restrictions that will make it extremely difficult for the company to do business with US counterparts.

On Friday, the US Commerce Department said it was considering scaling back restrictions on Huawei to “prevent the interruption of existing network operations and equipment”. It was not immediately clear on Sunday whether Huawei’s access to mobile software would be affected.

Huawei hits back at US blacklist (2:26)

The extent to which Huawei will be hurt by the US government’s blacklist is not yet known as its global supply chain assesses the impact. Chip experts have questioned Huawei’s ability to continue to operate without help from the United States.

Details of the specific services affected by the suspension were still being discussed internally at Google, according to the source. Huawei lawyers are also studying the effect of the blacklist, a Huawei spokesman said on Friday.

Huawei was not immediately reachable for further comment.

Chipmakers including Intel Corp, Qualcomm Inc , Xilinx Inc and Broadcom Inc have told their employees they will not supply critical software and components to Huawei until further notice, Bloomberg reported late on Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Intel, Qualcomm, Xilinx and Broadcom did not immediately respond to requests for comments on the Bloomberg report.

Representatives of the US Commerce Department did not immediately comment.

INSIDE STORY: Why is Huawei so controversial? (25:10)

‘Drastic step’

Citing security concerns, several countries have banned Huawei from being involved in the development of their 5G mobile networks.

Even so, Huawei remains the world’s largest telecommunications equipment and service provider, as well as the second-biggest smartphone maker after Samsung.

Ina Fried, the chief technology correspondent at Axios, said the move by Google could have severe ramifications for the expansion of Huawei outside the Chinese market.

“If this stands, it’s a pretty big blow,” he told Al Jazeera from San Francisco, in the US state of California.

“I think they will be relegated to a bit player in most countries other than China. In China, they’re probably OK, where I don’t think there is the same demand – there are alternatives as far as app stores Chinese consumers are not reliant on Google’s services,” he added.

“But everywhere else I think it will severely dent what has been an incredibly fast-growing business service.”

Fried called the blacklist by the Trump administration “a very drastic step”, adding that it would be “interesting” to see if China’s response.

“I mean, it is true that Huawei counts on US software but I’ll tell you, Apple relies on Chinese manufacturing so I think they are worried as well because China could retaliate by saying, “Fine, you’ll have to pay giant export fees if you want to take those iPhones elsewhere.”

China vows not to compromise on principles as US trade talks end (1:53)

Popular apps

Huawei will continue to have access to the version of the Android operating system available through the open source license, known as Android Open Source Project (AOSP), that is available for free to anyone who wishes to use it. There are about 2.5bn active Android devices worldwide, according to Google.

However, Google will stop providing Huawei with access, technical support and collaboration involving its proprietary apps and services going forward, the source told Reuters.

Huawei has said it has spent the last few years preparing a contingency plan by developing its own technology in case it is blocked from using Android. Some of this technology is already being used in products sold in China, the company has said.

In an interview with Reuters in March, Eric Xu, rotating chairman of Huawei, struck a defiant note in anticipation of retaliatory actions by US companies.

“No matter what happens, the Android Community does not have any legal right to block any company from accessing its open-source license,” he said.

Popular Google apps such as Gmail, YouTube and the Chrome browser that are available through Google’s Play Store will disappear from future Huawei handsets as those services are not covered by the open source license and require a commercial agreement with Google.

But users of existing Huawei devices who have access to the Google Play Store will still be able to download app updates provided by Google.

Apps such as Gmail are updated through the store, unlike operating system updates which are typically handled by phone manufacturers and telecoms carriers, which the blacklist could affect, the source said.

‘Barry’ Season 2 delivers shocking and explosive finale

Warning: Major spoilers for Barry Season 2, episode 8 lie ahead.

He can’t keep doing this.

It’s a thought that’s crossed nearly every Barry fan’s mind.

Hiding from the FBI, regularly at odds with the organized crime scene, and in an all-out war with professional bad guy Monroe Fuches, Barry Berkman-turned-Block seems destined to get himself killed, caught, or worse at some point in the series’ run.

But as of Season 2, that day is still far off.

In the show’s season finale, it was Barry who had finally had enough, putting his enemies under the gun in a horrifying and spectacular display of “fuck this” firepower that rivaled even the most grisly of Sopranos shoot-outs.

In the Season 2 finale, it was Barry who had finally had enough.

Sloughing off his past seven episodes of good guy behavior, Barry returned to his hitman roots in Sunday’s episode, aptly titled “berkman > block.” Pushed to the brink by the framing of Gene Cousineau, Barry began the episode by vowing to kill Fuches.

“Fuches, I’m coming for you. You’re a fucking dead man,” Barry hissed into his phone.

It’s a threatening enough statement (particularly when left as a voicemail.) But after watching Barry go to extreme lengths to avoid killing anyone this season, including his girlfriend’s abusive ex, it seemed unlikely that the reformed hitman could follow through on the murder of his beloved mentor.

And yet, while he didn’t quite stick the landing — amidst the chaos, Fuches managed an unlikely escape — Barry proved he was more than willing to go there.

In his efforts to hunt down and assassinate his target, Barry went nuclear on the NoHo Hank / Cristobal / Esther super mob, racking up a whopping 14 person kill count on-screen (with even more implied off-frame) in the season’s final moments.

SEE ALSO: ‘Barry’ star Anthony Carrigan knows who NoHo Hank would want on the Iron Throne

For long-time viewers, this shocking development wasn’t so much an upping of the ante as it was a decimating trajectory change for the series’ narrative.

Over the past two seasons, Barry fans have rooted for the misguided aspiring actor to escape his past and begin life anew. We’ve prayed for the surprisingly capable Detective May to give up on Janice’s case. We’ve agonized over Sally’s insufferable uselessness. We’ve pleaded for Hank to give Barry a break on one thing, any thing, just one time.

The next iteration in the Walter White legacy, this was Barry’s Jane moment.

But, Barry couldn’t be a sort of good guy forever. Like the antiheroes of many other series, Barry had to finally pick his good or his bad side, his Block or his Berkman.

Surrounded by bodies, all casualties of his glorified tantrum, Barry saw the answer clearly. The next iteration in the Walter White legacy, this was Barry’s Jane moment, and he went Berkman.

Heading into the already confirmed Season 3, Barry has plenty of big questions to answer, made even more dire by the sudden change in its lead.

How will Barry account for that massacre? What will happen to NoHo Hank? Where will Sally’s public fraud take her acting career? Will Gene identify Barry as Janice’s killer? When exactly are the Swim Instructors call-backs?

There’s plenty to guess at before Barry returns in 2020, but for now, one thing is certain: We were right; Barry couldn’t keep doing this.

And so, he didn’t.

‘Westworld’ Season 3 trailer features the arrival of Aaron Paul: Watch

By Johnny Lieu

The third season of Westworld is coming soon, and it looks like Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul is returning to a life of crime.

In a trailer which dropped before the Game of Thrones finale, Paul is front and centre as he navigates a rather bleak-looking future, seeking “something, someone real” — before meeting a seriously bedraggled Dolores at the end. It’s also a completely different looking show to before.

While you’ve probably still got plenty of questions about the end of Season 2, Paul’s addition looks certain to be another mind-bender.

Westworld III arrives on HBO in 2020.

Giannis Antetokounmpo isn’t worried despite the Milwaukee Bucks dropping Sunday night’s Eastern Conference Finals Game 3 118-112 in double overtime to the Toronto Raptors.

“There’s so many things that we can get better [at],” the NBA Most Valuable Player finalist told reporters after the loss, “and we will get better. And we’re gonna come out in Game 4, and we’re gonna be us. We’re gonna be the team that we’ve been all year.”

Giannis added that everybody in the Bucks locker room is “really, really hungry.” Sunday marked only the second loss for Milwaukee this postseason and first in the series as the Raptors cut the Bucks’ series lead to 2-1.

Fans react to emotional ‘Game of Thrones’ finale

It's done: 'Game of Thrones' has bowed out.
It’s done: ‘Game of Thrones’ has bowed out.

Image: macall b. polay/hbo

By Proma Khosla

Warning: The following post contains spoilers for the finale of Game of Thrones. You must know this by now.

After nine years, eight seasons, and 73 episodes, Game of Thrones bowed out with – if nothing else – a massive sendoff. Tears were shed, fire breathed, and wine drunk (mostly by us). The Iron Throne dissolved (literally), giving way to Westeros’ first vaguely constitutional monarchy, and the Starks split up (by choice this time) to explore the world and keep the peace.

Season 8 garnered mixed reactions from fans and critics, with arguably more pressure on the finale than ever before. After Daenerys went full Mad Queen, she met a swift death at the hands of her nephew/lover Jon The Starks finally found justice (mostly), with Bran the Broken taking the Throne (or *a* throne, since the original melted) and Sansa becoming Queen in the North. Arya rode West of Westeros, prime for a spinoff, while the rest of our faves stuck around King’s Landing to support their new King. Both Jon and Tyrion ended up almost exactly back where they started; Tyrion as Hand of the King and Jon rejoining the Night’s Watch after being found guilty of treason.

Hey, we love some full circle shit.

A perfect ending. Couldn’t have asked for more. Beautiful. Thank you for the journey #GameOfThrones.

I don’t think the ending divorced of everything is the worst. But they certainly didn’t tell a story that justifies it, so therefore it is bad. GRRM may end it the exact same way but tell a better story making it a good ending. #GameofThrones

That was a solid and satisfying finale all things considered. I’m genuinely happy with how it ended.

It’s a darn shame just how obvious it is that they had the ending and just forced themselves to circle a drain to get there. #GameofThrones

NASA’s new robot is getting ready for work.

Astrobee, a free-flying robot system that’s designed to give astronauts a hand in space, has had its first hardware checks on the International Space Station.

The system is actually a trio of robots, named Honey, Queen, and Bumble, which are propelled by electric fans and can return to their docking station to recharge their batteries. Two of the robots, Bumble and Honey, were launched to the space station on Apr. 17.

NASA posted a photo of astronaut Anne McClain, who performed the first series of tests on Astrobee, which included checking the robot’s avionics, cameras, propulsion, and docking for power and data transfer.

Astrobee is a test to see how robots can take care of spacecraft when astronauts are away, which NASA explained will be crucial for deep-space missions, such as its plan to return to the moon.

The robots feature cameras, microphones, and other sensors to help operators on the ground to monitor conditions.

They can fly independently, or be controlled, allowing astronauts to concentrate on more important tasks. The robots are modular too, which means more features can be added when needed.

It’ll be a little while until the system gets to work, with more tests to run until its project commissioning date sometime around October or November.

Researchers are also planning more complex experiments, including carrying payloads, which will begin in 2020.
