Obama rallies California Dems as state GOP licks its chops

Former President Barack Obama

A day after giving his first head-on speech indicting President Donald Trump’s record, former President Barack Obama was nowhere near as hard-hitting. | Ringo H.W. Chiu/AP Photo

Elections

As the former president lends gravitas and glamor to seven House candidates, both parties insist they can use his embrace to energize their voters.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Barack Obama’s plunge into the midterm elections on Saturday served its central purpose: For Democrats in critical House races – many of them new to politics – appearing with the former president lent their campaigns urgency and credibility.

“If we don’t step up, things can get worse” Obama told cheering activists who gathered in a crowded ballroom at a rally for seven Democrats running in Republican-held House districts. “In two months, we have a chance to restore some sanity in our politics.”

Story Continued Below

But Republicans see Obama’s return as a chance to step up, too. As the liberal hero begins to stump for fellow Democrats this fall, his stop in this one-time bastion of conservatism comes with political risk. Republicans for years used Obama to energize voters, yoking down-ticket Democrats to a president reviled by the GOP. That’s a formula Republicans here think they can repeat.

Although Hillary Clinton carried the districts of all seven candidates featured at the rally during her 2016 presidential bid, Obama lost five of them in 2012, carrying only the two competitive districts in California’s Central Valley. Obama lost California’s Orange County twice. Of his return appearance, said Rob Pyers of the California Target Book, which handicaps races in California, “I’m not sure it’s helpful.”

“It seems like a gift to the [National Republican Congressional Committee],” he said.

A day after giving his first head-on speech indicting President Donald Trump’s record, Obama was nowhere near as hard-hitting, preferring instead to talk up the Democratic candidates — even if he did criticize politicians who he said “exploit politics of fear.”

“I gave a long speech yesterday,” Obama told the crowd. “Today is a different role. Today, really what I want to do is highlight the extraordinary collection of candidates who have decided to step up” in California House races.

But as Obama implored Democrats here to recognize a “consequential moment in our history,” a protester outside the Anaheim Convention Center captured the tension of his return to an area where he was never especially popular. “This is Orange County. We’re not in Brooklyn,” he taunted rally-goers outside.

Even before Obama arrived, Republicans were fundraising off the visit. Diane Harkey, the Republican running in California’s 49th Congressional District, said in a fundraising email, “We can’t allow Obama to steal this seat from us and hand it, along with a liberal House majority, back to Nancy Pelosi!”

But Democrats and some independent analysts said the embrace of a former president would bring benefits outweighing Republican efforts to revive lowlights of the Obama era.

Paul Mitchell of Political Data Inc., the voter data firm used by both Republicans and Democrats in California said Obama can give novice candidates “something that they lack, which is they’ve never been elected officials, they don’t have that kind of gravitas of standing on a stage with the president of the United States.”

Obama is wildly popular among Democrats, and his public approval rating has only increased since he left office. But Republican voters still outnumber Democrats in much of suburbia, including Orange County, which Clinton flipped Democratic in a presidential race for the first time since 1936. The county is now a critical battleground in Democrats’ effort to retake the House.

Nodding to the Democrats’ effort to court a broader audience in less heavily Democratic districts, Obama vowed to reach out “not just to true-blue, diehard Democrats.”

“I want to talk to independents,” he said. “I want to reach out to some Republicans who kind of harken back to the values of a guy named Abraham Lincoln, the first Republican president, and who say to themselves … ‘I don’t recognize what’s going on in Washington right now. That’s not what I believe.’”

Yet in a reflection of the gulf between Obama and more conservative-leaning reaches of the country, not all Democrats are rushing to his side. Andrew Janz, one of the Democratic Party’s top online House candidate fundraisers, demurred when asked about Obama’s presence in the state.

“I’m going to run my own race,” said Janz, who was not included in the event with Obama on Saturday, which was limited to the seven races national Democrats view as more competitive.

Janz, who is running against Rep. Devin Nunes in a heavily Republican district in California’s Central Valley, said, “To be honest with you, I am really focused on making sure that the voters of my district know that I am not somebody that is going to be controlled by the national party.”

By contrast, the Democrats who appeared with Obama here were thrilled to welcome his lavish praise.

“I think President Obama is a powerful reminder of what a presidential leader looks like, and that’s a contrast to Donald Trump,” said Katie Porter, running to unseat Republican Rep. Mimi Walters.

Mitchell agreed, saying Obama’s involvement in close House races could elevate a Democratic House candidate with no government experience—a category that includes Porter, a law professor at the University of California, Irvine— “to someone you look at and say, ‘Oh yeah, she could be a congresswoman.’”

Yet while Mitchell said he believes “the positives outweigh the negatives” for Democrats campaigning with Obama, he did not dismiss the risk associated with his embrace.

Mitchell said that, until now, Trump’s main political foils have been figures like special counsel Robert Mueller and some of Trump’s own associates, including his former lawyer Michael Cohen, potentially deflating the president’s GOP support.

But Obama’s return to the campaign trail—which Trump mocked at a rally yesterday and on Twitter last night, could remind Republicans what animated them in 2016.

“If this becomes Trump versus Obama, that’s a playing field that in a way is almost giving Republicans a permission structure to be able to turn out and vote,” Mitchell said.

Ariana Grande Shares An Intimate Tribute To Mac Miller After His Death

Getty Images

Ariana Grande has shared a touching tribute to her former boyfriend and rapper Mac Miller, one day after his tragic death.

Grande’s simple, poignant salute came in the form of a black and white photo of Mac sitting outside, looking up at the camera. No caption accompanies the intimate photo, and Grande disabled comments on the Instagram post.

Miller, who had recently released his album Swimming, died on Friday (September 7) after an apparent overdose. His family confirmed his death in a short statement, saying, “Malcolm McCormick, known and adored by fans as Mac Miller, has tragically passed away at the age of 26. He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans. Thank you for your prayers.”

Grande and Miller’s love story began back in 2013 when they collaborated on her single “The Way.” They remained friends and occasional collaborators for three years before taking their relationship to the next level in 2016. The Sweetener singer announced in May 2018 that they had split after two years of dating, noting that she was “grateful to have him in my life in any form” and describing Miller as “one of my best friends in the whole world.”

Miller was similarly gracious about Grande, wishing her the best after their split and adding that he was happy for her after her engagement to Pete Davidson. He told Rolling Stone, “I’ve cared about her for a long time as a person. I am genuinely happy that that’s how she moved. That’s good for her. Go, go, keep going! As she should. I’m just being real. That’s good. Now I have space for me. And that’s great too.”

Grande has previously been candid about how Miller’s substance abuse problems affected their relationship. A few weeks after their split — and following his DUI arrest — she shared a statement responding to people who blamed her for her ex’s behaviors, writing, “I have cared for him and tried to support his sobriety. Of course I didn’t share how hard or scary it was while it was happening, but it was. I will continue to pray from the bottom of my heart that he figures it all out and that any woman in this position does as well.”

Grande is the latest to remember the late rapper on social media, as several artists — including Chance the Rapper, Kehlani, and Solange — have expressed their grief over Miller’s shocking death. See some of those tributes in the video below.

Tucker Carlson’s anti-diversity rant for Fox News riled Twitter

2016%2f10%2f18%2f6f%2f2016101865slbw.6b8ca.6b5d9By Sasha Lekach

Fox News host Tucker Carlson went on a rant Friday against Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and other Democrats and politicians who have called for a more diverse workforce, government, and American way of life.

Carlson went off on anyone who has said “diversity is our strength” with the chyron on the screen blaring the question: “How exactly is ‘diversity’ our ‘strength’?”

SEE ALSO: Fox News forced to apologize for mixing up Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle. Oops.

He rhetorically asked how can we get along better “if you can’t understand each other or share no common values.” Then he noted that the less people have in common, the less likely they are to be “cohesive.”

Here’s the clip:

Carlson’s thinking seems to line up with white nationalist rationales for limiting immigration or multiculturalism in our government, work places, and leadership.

A call for ad companies to protest his talk show went out Saturday and others took to Twitter outraged with his racist views.

Tucker Carlson decries “Diversity is our strength” being made the U.S.’s “new national motto”. Umm… new? “E Pluribus Unum” – “Out of many, one” – was made the national motto in 1782: celebrating exactly that diversity is America’s strength. https://t.co/xUFXSrcKcg

— Oliver Cooper (@OliverCooper) September 8, 2018

It also seems Carlson has a limited understanding of the value of diversity. He listed marriage and the military as examples where diversity weakens the institution. This was shot down with the simple explanation of “science.”

The fundamental basis of humanity is evolution, which requires diversity on levels. Almost every species on the planet has used diversity for adaptation in order to surmount environmental difficulties and survive predators.

Tucker Carlson clearly does not understand life.

— Oren ➰ (@OrenCJenkins) September 8, 2018

Someone just posted Tucker Carlson asking “How is diversity or strength?” 1) someone needs a science class and 2) it is horrible to assume homogeneity is the “safest and only route”.

— Mother of Progressive Army & Mama Actify (@goddesspamela) September 8, 2018

In the pro-diversity camp, this comment rings loud and true:

We reached out to Fox News for comment on Carlson’s diversity segment.

Global climate protests call for united action as talks stall

Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in major international cities to demand governmental action on climate change as talks to reinvigorate the Paris Agreement continued in Thailand

The “Rise for Climate” protest movement swept over the globe on Saturday, with more than 1,000 events organised worldwide – from Bangkok to San Francisco.

In the Thai capital, where talks at the United Nations’ regional headquarters began earlier this week, dozens of fishermen and labourers whose livelihoods are threatened by rising sea levels brought examples of their  produce, including crabs and shrimp, while holding banners calling on delegates to take action.

“I came here today to ask the government to put coastal erosion on the national agenda,” 58-year-old fisherwoman Aree Kongklad told AFP news agency.

UN chief Antonio Guterres acknowledged that too little is being done, calling on negotiators in Bangkok to “show the ambition” needed to address the issues.

Leaders must lead on #ClimateAction. I call on negotiators at the Bangkok climate talks to show the ambition needed to tackle climate change. https://t.co/qC6SJr4dHv

Sizeable crowds also showed in European cities. Organisers in France claimed that roughly 115,000 took part in nationwide rallies. If true, it would make the “Rise for Climate” marches the largest environmental protest in the country’s history.

“This is the biggest day of climate action in France, it’s proof that the citizens are ready to demand commitments from our elected officials after a catastrophic summer when it comes to the climate,” said Clemence Dubois, the France campaigner for 350.org, a group whose website says it uses online and grassroots organising to “to oppose new coal, oil and gas projects”.

Another 10,000 rallied in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, according to police. About 1,300 others marched in front of the European Parliament in Brussels.

Progress stalled

The Paris Agreement, which was adopted in December 2015 by 196 state parties, calls on signatories to report their progress in battling climate change to the UN.

The landmark agreement deals with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year 2020.

The aim is to limit global temperature rise to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by 2100.

But US President Donald Trump, whose country is of one of the world’s largest polluters, announced in August 2017 that he would withdraw from the agreement in order to renegotiate its terms. The move caused global outrage.

The talks in Bangkok aim to create a draft legal framework for limiting global temperature rises that can be presented to ministers and heads of state at a final round of discussions in Poland in December.

Delegates began meeting on Tuesday, but there has been little progress, according to reports.

Multiple sources told AFP on Saturday that the US is stalling UN talks over how to fund poorer nations in the battle against climate change.

“The US is no longer playing the game but it’s still setting the rules,” said a senior climate negotiator, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Want to know what people are listening to right now in Belize? How about Macau? Or Uganda?

A new Apple Music feature rolled out on Friday introduced a large collection of Top 100 charts to the service. There are 116 of them, to be exact: One global chart, and then one more for each country where Apple Music is available.

Each list shows the most-streamed songs in whichever region they cover. They’ll all be updated once per day at 12:00 a.m. PT, and they’re grouped together under the app’s “Browse” section whether you’re viewing Apple Music from a mobile device or your desktop (h/t Rolling Stone).

(It’s worth noting that while Rolling Stone‘s firsthand look at the new feature mentions 116 charts, a Mashable subscriber on staff only saw around 50 listed on both desktop and mobile.)

Apple Music has been growing steadily since it launched in 2015. By the end of 2016, it was up to 20 million subscribers globally. Then, earlier this summer, a report surfaced suggesting that Apple’s subscriber count in the U.S. had overtaken that of competing service Spotify.

In June, Apple launched a browser-based web player to give desktop users an option other than the iTunes app for their music listening. Then, in August, a new feature launched that gave users a listening mix that assembles the top 25 songs their Apple Music friends are listening to.

The new Top 100 charts deliver an added “discovery” layer to the service, providing subscribers with yet another way to tailor their new jams around what’s popular, and where.

Earl Thomas will lead the Seattle Seahawks defense onto the field in Week 1 against the Denver Broncos

Per ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Thomas will be activated to the Seahawks’ 53-man roster to start Sunday’s season opener.

Thomas sat out all of training camp and the preseason while seeking a new contract from the Seahawks. The three-time All-Pro has one year remaining on his current deal worth $8.5 million.

When no deal materialized, Thomas announced Wednesday on Instagram that he would be returning to the team.

“I worked my whole life for this,” he wrote. “… I’ve never let me teammates, city or fans down as long as I’ve lived and don’t plan on starting this weekend. With that being said, the disrespect has been well noted and will not be forgotten. Father Time may have an undefeated record but best believe I plan on taking him into triple overtime when it comes to my career.”

Head coach Pete Carroll told reporters during a conference call it was unclear if Thomas would be ready to play in Week 1.

“It’s an adjustment period, as he jumps in with us now,” Carroll said, according to 247Sports’ Derek Lewis“We’ll figure out how that works, and we’ll get through it. He’s already on the field with our guys, and he’ll practice today. So we’ll see what that all means.”

Thomas has been an integral part of Seattle’s success since he was drafted 14th overall in 2010. He has recorded at least 64 combined tackles and six passes defensed in each of his eight NFL seasons.

Armenian children facing deportation can stay in the Netherlands

The Netherlands has suspended a planned deportation of two Armenian children whose bid for asylum was rejected, in a case that has drawn nationwide attention.

The surprising U-turn came after the siblings – 12-year-old Lili and her brother Howick, 13 – went into hiding ahead of their expected deportations on Saturday.

In a statement, the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security said that while authorities in the Netherlands and Armenia had worked hard to arrange a secure situation for the pair in Armenia, “recent developments” meant “the welfare and security of the children can no longer be sufficiently guaranteed”.

“The state secretary has therefore, taking everything into account, decided that the children can remain in the Netherlands,” Saturday’s statement added.

Going into hiding

Earlier on Saturday, Maarten Molenbeek, spokesperson for the justice ministry, said the children had ran away from a foster home overnight, while police appealed for the public’s help in locating them.

Police reported in the afternoon that the siblings had been found and were being questioned, but would be returned to foster care.

The children have been living with foster parents since their mother, Armina Hambartsjumian, lost a decade-long legal battle for asylum and was sent to Armenia without them.

It was not immediately clear whether Hambartsjumian, who was deported to Armenia last year, would be allowed to return to join her children.

The siblings, who came to the Netherlands in 2008, have reportedly never visited Armenia and do not speak Armenian.

A court in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam, on Friday rejected a final bid to block their deportations.

The Dutch government faced mounting disapproval of its original refusal to let the siblings remain in the country.

Mark Harbers, state secretary for justice and security defended the government’s position on Friday, but acknowledged it was a tough decision to deport them.

“Everybody feels emotional about this; that also applies to somebody in the cabinet like me,” Harbers said.

“But at the same time you have to keep looking at all the facts that play a role.”
