Sarah Jessica Parker agrees ‘Sex and the City’ was ‘tone deaf’ on diversity

Fashionably late as ever, Sarah Jessica Parker has come to a conclusion most of us came to years ago: Sex and the City didn’t age as gracefully as its cast.

The main actress behind the beloved, decades-old show even went as far to call it “tone deaf” when looking back on the show with the hindsight of today’s social politics.

SEE ALSO: Cynthia Nixon insists she’s not Miranda so let’s all just stop with the SATC jokes

In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Parker discussed the major issues with reviving Sex and the City for the modern zeitgeist.

“You couldn’t make it today because of the lack of diversity on screen,” Parker said during the Deauville Film Festival, referring to the all-white cast of main characters. “I personally think it would feel bizarre.”

Of course, in the age of reboots (and in light of the two recent spinoff films), talk of a TV revival has been swarming around Sex and the City like flies to trash on a hot New York day.

But a revival in its previous form seems all but impossible at this point. The ongoing feud between Parker and her previous co-star Kim Cattrall pretty much put all those rumors to bed. There’s also the tiny problem of Cynthia Nixon having moved onto politics.

Finally, the nixing of the third movie felt like the final nail in the coffin for the HBO classic.

But now it seems Parker feels free to air her very reasonable criticisms toward the show that defined her career. Because, once heralded as a trailblazer in women’s representation, Sex and the City carries lots of questionable baggage with how we define progress for women on screen now.

Yup, this is still not what New York City actually looks like.

Yup, this is still not what New York City actually looks like.

Image: warner bros.

“I don’t know that you could do it with a different cast,” she said. “I think that’s radical and interesting, but you can’t pretend it’s the same.”

Parker tried to imagine what an all-new look for Sex and the City group would look like, both as promising change but also an ultimate challenge:

“It wouldn’t be a reboot as I understand it. If you came back and did six episodes, you’d have to acknowledge the city is not hospitable to those same ideas,” she said.

“You’d look like you were generationally removed from reality, but it would be certainly interesting to see four diverse women experiencing NYC their way … It would be interesting and very worthwhile exploring, but it couldn’t be the same.”

All in all though, Parker seemed comfortable considering what the show — which became nearly synonymous with her own personal brand — would be like if it grew beyond her. Though it’s fair to say HBO’s Girls, the arguable millennial successor to what Sex and the City started, still never moved beyond its unbearably white perspective of the diverse metropolis.

But even the most fashionable shows go out of fashion eventually. And maybe it’s time to put this one in the back of the closet along with those out-of-season Manolos.

Guy emails 246 Nicoles in search of a girl he met at a bar, and now they’re all friends

2018%2f04%2f02%2f74%2fheadshot.edeb7By Morgan Sung

Apparently Tinder is just too basic for some people.

Carlos Zetina only knew a handful of things about the girl he met at a campus bar: her name was Nicole, she was from Holland, she attended the University of Calgary, and she thought Nietzche was depressing.

SEE ALSO: Saint Hoax’s addictive Instagram account puts a wicked twist on pop culture

When the number she gave him ended up being wrong, he decided to pursue the missed connection in the most extra way: He combed through the University of Calgary’s entire email list, and messaged every Nicole he could find in one mass email:

“Hi, this is a mass e mail to all Nicole’s [sic] if you don’t fit this description then ignore and if you are the one and just don’t want to talk to me that’s ok as well. If you name is Nicole and you’re from Holland and you think Nietzsche is depressing then text me … I’m Carlos btw I’m the guy who took you and your friend home last night.”

Zetina emailed 246 Nicoles in total, including students, staff, and faculty members. Even associate deans named Nicole were part of his quest to find his dream Nicole. He was thorough, too — according to BuzzFeed, Zetina added variations like Nicolette and Nickie in his search.

His huge email didn’t find the Nicole he was looking for, but it did unite the Nicoles of the University of Calgary.

“There’s a researcher in the group, who, she and I have similar research interests, so we’re actually going to collaborate in future,” Nicole Thompson told CBC. “I think it’s fantastic.”

A group of Nicoles even met up at a local pub.

And they made a Facebook group just for fellow #NicolesFromLastNight.

Us Nicole’s are all best friends now and we even have a Facebook page so we can plan Nicole meet ups. 😂 Seriously the best way to start the school year 😂 https://t.co/e7v5Ph6SaB

— Nicole (@nicolekr19) September 8, 2018

As word spread, someone added Nicole Toetenel to the Facebook group. She admitted to being the exchange student from Holland that Zetina was searching for, and according to BuzzFeed, hadn’t memorized her Canadian number. Since she’s an exchange student, she didn’t have a university email address and completely missed the Nicole-fest.

“But the powerful network of Nicole’s [sic] helped me get in touch,” she tweeted.

“He had a connection with this woman and I guess she felt it too — so it’s kind of the perfect ending to this,” Thompson told CBC.

The “real” Nicole told CBC that she and Zetina have coffee plans, but “just as friends.”

If it wasn’t already painfully obvious, he has a thing for Nicoles.

“My ex-girlfriend’s name was Nicole,” he admitted.

Ouch. Not how Darnold wanted to start things, but it’s not 1st time that’s happened … Jameis Winston had his first pass intercepted & returned for a TD in 2015. That was the first time a rookie’s first throw was returned for a TD since Brett Favre — then with Atlanta — in 1991.

Ouch. Not how Darnold wanted to start things, but it’s not 1st time that’s happened … Jameis Winston had his first pass intercepted & returned for a TD in 2015. That was the first time a rookie’s first throw was returned for a TD since Brett Favre — then with Atlanta — in 1991.

US decision to shut PLO office ‘denies Palestinians as people’

Washington, DC – The Trump administration’s decision to shut down the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) office in Washington, DC is “denying the Palestinians as people” and further jeopardising the peace process, analysts warn.

White House National Security Advisor John Bolton announced the administration’s decision in a speech on Monday, saying that the PLO had “not taken steps to advance the start of direct and meaningful negotiations with Israel”.

He said the PLO leadership has instead “condemned a yet-to-be-seen US peace plan and “refused to engage with the US government with respect to peace efforts and otherwise”. The administration has also threatened the International Criminal Court of sanction measures if judges open an investigation on the US or Israel.

Palestinian officials have described the decision as an “declaration of war on efforts to bring peace … to the region”.

PLO Secretary-General Saeb Erekat said the decision was “yet another affirmation of the Trump administration’s policy to collectively punish the Palestinian people”.

‘Abbas pushed beyond his limits’

The move is being seen by analysts as another blow to the Palestinians in a chain of events that have favoured the Israeli government at the expense of Palestinians, adding to the potential of unrest and violence.

The administration of US President Donald Trump recently said it was cutting more than $200m in economic aid to the Palestinians. It also recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel last year and moved the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem this year.

Over the past year, Jared Kushner, senior White House adviser and Trump’s son-in-law, has questioned Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas’s commitment to peace.

“The [Trump administration] has changed the parameters of how the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been dealt with in recent years,” said Ian Black, a visiting senior fellow at the Middle East Centre, London School of Economics.

While the decision carries a multitude of implications for a peace process, Black said the most significant of those has been the weakening of any kind of mechanism to produce a settlement to the conflict or a two state solution.

“It is worth pointing that the Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, is more likely than any other to come to some kind of two-state solution with Israel,” he said. “But he has been pushed to react furiously to American moves. [There will] no longer be a fair mediator in the conflict. Abbas has been pushed beyond limits on this.”

While a long-term effect of the decision would tinge the international commitment to a two-state solution, he said a risk of instability and violence was possible in the short-term.

“Everyone remembers the split screen of the beautifully orchestrated ceremony at the embassy opening and the 60 people shot dead in Gaza,” he said.

Author Khaled Diab, who has spent the last decade in frequent visits to the Palestinian territories, said the idea of a two-state solution has long diminished in the minds of many.

For the first time, he said, Palestinians are now running in municipal elections after previous boycotts and more are applying for Israeli citizenship.

“Even if there is a two-state solution, it would collapse very quickly,” Diab said.

Although the latest move has angered many Palestinians in the West, those in the occupied Palestinian territories are less likely to react, he said. The cutting of aid, however, was one that could have a knock-on effect leading to unrest.

‘Denying Palestinian’s self-determination’

Although the decision could be an attempt to pressure the Palestinian leadership to accept the yet-to-be-released peace deal, experts have said it was a “foolish” idea.

“Shutting the office is denying [Palestinian’s] self-determination, denying them as people,” James Zogby, founder and president of the Arab American Institute, said. “It’s more far-reaching decision than closing an office down. We are back to the period of ‘no such thing as Palestinians’ mindset.

“The PLO did not create the Palestinian movement – it embodies the national movement. If Palestinians agree to whatever is offered – which seems to be wholly inadequate, they will no longer be in leadership”.

Erekat said in a statement on Monday that the PLO will take necessary measures to “protect the rights of our citizens living in the United States to access their consular services”.

Zogby suggested that a representative from the PLO may be housed by an Arab country mission in the US to continue to offer consular service, operating the same way it did before the PLO had an official office in the US capital.

‘Resetting relation to pre-Oslo period’

A few analysts also drew comparisons of the office closure to the pre-Oslo period before Israel and the PLO signed an agreement in 1993.

Diab said dealing with the PLO as a pariah and terrorist organisation and not a representative of the people was resetting relations to a pre-Oslo period.

“We can see it in the rhetoric already, the administration saying they are not committed to the peace process,” he said. “We are moving toward a situation the Americans abandoned even the rhetorical commitment to the Oslo process … what they are going to do is present a deal so unacceptable to the Palestinians and use it as a further pretext to shut down any mechanisms for peace negotiations beyond the Oslo lines.”

As Palestinians are forced to accept a halted peace resolution and an unlikely two-state resolution, experts expect a dynamic shift as more Palestinians demand for equal rights on par with their Israeli counterparts and citizenship.

“We are already seeing early signs of this,” Diab said. “Palestinian are disappointed. They have been let down by their occupation, the international community, and their own leaders.”

GOP faces deadline crunch as threat of losing House deepens

Paul Ryan

Congress

In-fighting among congressional Republicans could hurt progress on their legislative priorities.

Congressional Republicans, eager to hit the campaign trail to save their imperiled majorities, are starting to narrow their September legislative to-do list in hopes of skipping town early.

But they still have to deal with a handful of looming deadlines, a potential shutdown fight and internal policy tensions — and all on tight timelines.

Story Continued Below

Appropriators in both chambers still face numerous policy disputes over controversial issues like abortion as they work to cut deals on spending bills before the close of the fiscal year, Sept. 30. With this week cut short due to the Jewish holiday, and the House on recess next week, lawmakers only have seven legislative days that both chambers are scheduled to be in session before the government runs out of money.

Leaders also have to dispense with a massive farm bill that’s been stalled amid a House-Senate clash over food stamps. House Republicans, with President Donald Trump’s backing, are still demanding work requirements for low-income beneficiaries — a controversial conservative proposal that has Senate GOP support but cannot attract enough Democrats to become law.

Failure to pass a new farm bill by the Sept. 30 deadline could be a disaster: Republicans say it’s the best way to counteract the ill effects of President Donald Trump’s trade war.

The outstanding differences are so great that leaders have all but decided to sideline one of their original three “minibus” spending packages. The new plan includes passing two and simply extending funding for the rest of the half-dozen or so departments until early-December in a so-called “continuing resolution,” according to three sources with knowledge of the plan.

Leaders also haven’t ruled out extending the farm bill deadline to give themselves more negotiating time, though Republicans in both chambers say they hope they can avoid that. And tensions between the two chambers have simmered below the surface, as Senate and House Republicans blame each other for their slowed progress.

“[House members] tend to want to do their own thing but I think in the end the most important thing is to get an appropriations bill passed,” said Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas). “They’ve got their own prerogative, but the goal is to get the government funded and eliminate the drama.”

Former House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas (R-Okla.) had his own choice words for the upper chamber on the farm bill: “The Senate has taken a very hardcore position [against work requirements] … You won’t see House language as passed but by the same token, the Senate is going to have to give. We can’t just maintain the status quo. There is a compromise out there somewhere.”

Meanwhile, GOP lawmakers are on edge, crossing their fingers and praying that Trump doesn’t shut the government down to get his wall before Election Day. Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) seem confident that won’t happen, the latter predicting last week that there was “zero” percent chance of agencies getting shuttered.

But even top appropriators like Senate Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) won’t express the same confidence.

“I would think he would [sign our bills],” Shelby predicted hesitantly. “In my judgement, it’s not in the president’s interest to shutdown the government in anyway… That’s something I try to not think about.”

The legislative pile-up comes as rank-and-file members are increasingly worried that they will lose the House this fall and are itching to hit the campaign trail full-time. There’s been a notable shift in attitude among House Republicans, who once predicted a “50-50” shot at keeping the majority and now worry they are severe underdogs despite a buzzing economy.

House Republicans say they’re likely to completely cancel their two-week session in October to campaign. Some were even hoping to do the same for the last week of September but now realize that won’t be possible.

There may be less imperative for the Senate to split early in October, with few vulnerable GOP incumbents and a host of nominations to process.

Still, Senate Republicans, who’ve have a more favorable congressional map this fall, are struggling to defend deep red states after hoping to grow their two-seat majority. A rescue mission is now underway, for example, to save arch-conservative Ted Cruz in conservative Texas, and races in Tennessee and Arizona are too close for GOP comfort.

Yet in order to get out on the trail, lawmakers have to take care of legislative business first.

To do so, they’ve narrowed their legislative ambitions for the fall. GOP leaders had hoped to pass three “minibus” spending bills — dispensing with nine of the 12 annual must-do appropriations — before the House leaves for its September recess. That turned out to be wishful thinking, as they’ve decided to focus on getting two over the finish-line.

Beyond scaling back appropriations plans, the Senate will not pass another tax cut bill or take another crack at Obamacare repeal, preferring instead to focus on confirming Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanagh. Also on hold are negotiations over provisions protecting staffers from sexual harassment.

The top priority remains funding the government. GOP leaders on Monday unveiled a final deal on their first “minibus” that funds energy and water projects and the VA. They had hoped to dispense with the bill last week but talks stalled over policy riders, including one helping vulnerable Washington state Republicans facing tough races.

The House hopes to vote on the agreement this week, though a looming category 4 hurricane could upend those plans if votes are cancelled due to severe weather.

Even if Republicans pass the first “minibus” this week, both chambers still need to hash out a deal on the most contentious spending package: military, labor and health care spending bill, where the House’s more conservative view on abortion restrictions clashes sharply with the Senate’s vow not to include “poison pill” riders in spending bills.

By sidelining the third “minibus” bill for now, GOP leaders hope they can get the defense-labor-health funding bill passed since it includes the bulk of all government funding.

Though the House is on recess next week, work among top appropriators is expected to continue remotely. Spending bill conferences, however, typically proceed more rapidly when both chambers are in session.

That leaves a lot for members to do when the House returns the last week of September, when Congress is also expected to pass a stopgap “continuing resolution” to extend funding for the rest of the departments.

The stakes are huge. Both political parties are eager to tap $36 billion in new funding for domestic and military spending from this year’s budget deal. And if the appropriations process falls apart, there may be less will to do a difficult budget deal next year.

What’s more, if lawmaker are unable to pass their “minibuses,” they could be in for nightmare scenario: a full shutdown before Election Day.

Trump has sent mixed signals about whether he would veto spending legislation that doesn’t include wall money. GOP leaders know he wants to fight on the issue and has demanded $5 billion for construction, money Senate Democrats object to absent a broader immigration deal. But they’ve asked him to delay his shutdown showdown until after the election.

Trump has agreed to the plan, doing so as recently as last week in an Oval Office meeting with GOP leaders. But Trump has been known to change his mind. And there’s a hardliner contingent in the White House who believes the House is already lost and that Trump should fight on spending now, worrying many on Capitol Hill.

“He has his view that this issue motivates the base, which it does,” said Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.). “But I also think that as we run up into the midterms, particularly in some of these districts that we need to win to keep the House, shutting down the government is not a particularly good strategy.”

Vulnerable Rep. Erik Paulsen echoed that view during a brief hallway interview Friday: “We don’t want drama. We don’t need that.”

John Bresnahan contributed.

Teens know social media is manipulative, but are using it more anyway

Whoa, the teens really are woke.

The organization Common Sense Media released a research report on Monday that aims to paint a picture of the role that social media plays in teens’ lives. Entitled ‘Social Media, Social Life,’ the survey covered topics like how much and what kinds of social media teens use, as well as how they feel about these apps, how social media makes them feel about themselves, how it affects their relationships, and more.

Teens’ social media use has increased by 36 percentage points since 2012. Unsurprisingly, their favorite apps are Snapchat and Instagram (Facebook is for communicating “with my grandparents” — not even parents, now… ouch).

<img alt="Device use has skyrocketed." data-caption="Device use has skyrocketed." data-credit-name="common sense media” data-credit-provider=”custom type” src=”https://i.amz.mshcdn.com/9nWw5XUOvUhv7m39MBA5sP1PVc0=/fit-in/1200×9600/https%3A%2F%2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fuploads%2Fcard%2Fimage%2F843094%2F2c893b1d-7a40-4a9c-9aa6-8b7963e3acfe.png” title=”Device use has skyrocketed.”>

Device use has skyrocketed.

Beyond broad-scale usage, the findings also show that how teenagers conceive of social media, and the role the apps play in their lives, is complicated and sometimes contradictory.

“Kids are much more aware today than they were a few years ago of both the pros and the downsides of social media,” Jim Steyer, Founder and CEO of Common Sense Media said on a call with press. “Basically all of them are engaged whether we like it or not. But they are more aware of some of the hazards on some of their emotional and personal wellbeing.”

Common Sense Media is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping parents navigate raising a family amidst the technological concerns of the 21st century. The organization commissioned the survey from a research group, which surveyed a “nationally representative” sample of 1,141 13- to 17-year-olds in the United States. Additionally, Common Sense conducted a similar survey in 2012, and was therefore able to compare how teens’ attitudes toward and behavior have changed over the tumultuous recent years for social media.

The affects of social media and smartphones on teens have been the focus of many studies and articles in recent years. Much of the discourse has centered around social media addiction, stilted social skills, and, notably, increased feelings of isolation and depression. However, Common Sense’s report does not paint as bleak a picture.

The Common Sense survey showed that social media is playing an increasing, but majority neutral, role in kids’ lives. A majority of teens self-reported that it did not affect their moods, behavior, or relationships positively or negatively — and a greater percentage of teens in the 2018 study said it has positive affect on them than in the 2012 study.

“Kids are used to social media now,” Steyer said. “That’s why many of them accept it as part of their life, and don’t really feel one way or the other.”

Many more teens say social media affects them positively than negatively. But most say it has no effect.

Have teens really put the social back in social media?

Have teens really put the social back in social media?

Image: COMMON SENSE MEDIA

Other findings show that more mature attitudes don’t necessarily correlate to more intentional behavior. Teens are increasingly aware of the way social media can manipulate them: 72 percent think social media companies intentionally work to keep eyeballs on their platform. Yet 70 percent of teens report that they use social media multiple times a day; 16 percent are on it “almost constantly.” Additionally, teens most prefer communicating via text over all forms of communication — including face to face.

“Kids are finding it difficult to put their devices down, and also being irritated with their friends who can’t put their devices down,” Sierra Filucci, Common Sense’s Executive Editor said. “They’re struggling with it in the same way that we are all struggling with it.”

<img alt="Teens are using social media even when they don't want to be." data-caption="Teens are using social media even when they don't want to be." data-credit-name="COMMON SENSE MEDIA

Image: COMMON SENSE MEDIA

One of the report’s authors, Vicky Rideout, attributes what she called the “tremendous” increase of social media use (70 percent up from 34 percent in 2012) to the increasing amount of teens who have a smart phone. She was also encouraged by the increasingly positive impact teens report social media having on their lives, even amongst the most “vulnerable” groups.

“Teens who are already lower in social and emotional wellbeing are the teens who are most likely to have negative responses to social media,” Rideout said. “But even among these more vulnerable teens, they’re still more likely to say that social media is a more positive than negative experience.”

As Steyer pointed out, this report surveyed a generation of true digital natives; the oldest participants were born in the year 2000. The fact that social media and smartphones have been baked into their lives as a given, and not a disruption, might allow for a more nuanced relationship with the platforms. They both and enjoy and rely on them, but understand the pitfalls, and the fact that these companies exist to make money.

With that attitude, the kids might just be all right.

Airport project on world’s largest island sparks sovereignty row

Greenland’s government has struck a deal with Denmark over funding for upgrades to three airports on the Arctic island, a project of strategic interest to a number of international players including China and the United States.

Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen on Monday confirmed the agreement reached with Kim Kielsen, Greenland’s premier, during an impromptu visit to the Greenlandic capital, Nuuk.

A self-governing Danish territory and the world’s largest island, Greenland has control over areas including mineral resources and social policy, while Denmark maintains responsibility for foreign policy and security.

“With the agreement, we promise to take advantage of the fact that the Commonwealth offers many opportunities,” Rasmussen said in a statement on Twitter

The deal will see Denmark contribute to an estimated 3.6bn kroner ($559m) revamp of airports in Nuuk, Qaqortoq in the south, and Ilulissat, the island’s main tourism spot, which is aimed at helping Greenland capitalise on Arctic tourism and cater for flights between Europe and North America.

It comes one day after Kielsen’s government lost its parliamentary majority following the pro-independence Partii Naleraq’s exit from the ruling four-party coalition over the prospect of Danish funding.

Copenhagen has argued that the airport project falls under its remit, but Partii Naleraq said mainland funding – which was backed by Kielsen’s Siumut party and the other two members of the coalition – amounted to interference in Greenlandic politics.

Translation: We need to ensure that Greenland can develop, which is why I am pleased that we have made an agreement today on Danish involvement in Greenland’s airport project. With the agreement, we promise to take advantage of the fact that the Commonwealth offers many opportunities.

“We do not want to be part of that,” Partii Naleraq said in a letter quoted by local broadcaster KNR.

Its departure leaves the island’s ruling coalition, which was formed in May after elections the previous month, with only 12 out of 31 seats in parliament.

“It’s not a surprise that the coalition has just imploded,” said Mikaa Mered, a professor of Arctic and Antarctic geopolitics at the Paris-based Free Institute of International Relations Studies (ILERI).

“[Being pro-independence] is the only common denominator of these four parties – they could not agree on anything else other than the independence question. It’s not a surprise,” he told Al Jazeera.

The opposition Demokraatit (The Democrats) party has opened the door for talks, which Kielsen has so far refused.

“I will talk to other parties about whether there is foundation for a new coalition,” he told KNR on Sunday, adding in comments to Sermitsiaq newspaper that he hoped to avoid calling a snap election.

‘Polar Silk Road’

The airport project has attracted the interest from both the East and West.

Greenland, which houses a large US airbase, is strategically important for the US military and its ballistic missile early warning system.

“For the US and for NATO partners, keeping Greenlanders and the Greenland government – whether it’s independent or not – inside the transatlantic Alliance is absolutely critical,” said Mered.

“On the other hand you have countries like China who see that there is a huge opportunity here to gain some land or real estate in Greenland or to set up Greenland, when it becomes independent, as a kind of client state,” he told Al Jazeera.

In recent years, Beijing has shown increasing interest in the Arctic, announcing plans to build a “Polar Silk Road” of shipping lanes opened up by global warming, which would encourage enterprises to build infrastructure in the Arctic.

Chinese funding for the airport project has been on the table since Kielsen visited Beijing in October 2017.

According to Greenland’s Kalaallit Airports, a state-owned company set up in 2016 to handle the airport upgrades, a Chinese construction company has appeared on a list of six firms that have shown interest in the project.

“Both the Danes and the Americans have long been trying to limit Chinese involvement in Greenland’s development, especially when it comes to projects that may have a national security impact, either for Greenland itself, or for the US and NATO partners,” said Mered.

In May, US Defence Secretary James Mattis invited his Danish counterpart to Washington to discuss potential security risks around the “Chinese investment in Greenland issue”.

Economic independence

For its part, Greenland is keen to secure foreign investment in order to become independent from Denmark.

Following a referendum in 2009, the island has had the power to declare independence at any time, but it continues to face financial obstacles.

“The Greenlandic economy is so small that Greenlanders are just not able to finance their independence,” said Mered.

Despite its size, Greenland is home to just over 56,000 people, according to the World Bank, and almost half of the island’s budget comes in the form of a block grant from Denmark.

“This grant is huge, it’s about $620m … so it’s going to be really hard for Greenlanders to become independent because, just in terms of state revenues, they need to find more than $600m a year to make their independence viable,” Mered said.
