Aaron Paul joins the cast of ‘Westworld’ for Season 3

Twist: Jesse Pickman was a Westworld robot the whole time

In a twist that Westworld might actually be able to pull off, Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul is reportedly joining the cast of Westworld.

According to Deadline, HBO isn’t saying much else about his role — other than confirming that he will become a series regular. So you know what that means, Reddit: It’s tinfoil time.

SEE ALSO: ‘Westworld’ Season 2 went full ‘Westworld’. Never go full ‘Westworld’.

In a show where robots can switch brains and characters can die only to then come back in new bodies, there’s basically no limit to how they can incorporate Paul into Westworld

Ever since Season 2’s ill-received season finale basically broke all rules of logic and narrative sense, we wouldn’t be surprised if Paul was actually Dolores, who was actually the Man in Black, who was actually in a virtual time loop making meth the whole time.

Since his Emmy award-nominated performance on Breaking Bad, Paul has had uneven luck with subsequent TV projects. His cult-focused Hulu show The Path was recently canceled after three lukewarm seasons. But he also lends his voice to the lovably oblivious Todd on Bojack Horseman.

Paul is also starring in Apple’s anthology series Are You Sleeping, with Deadline reporting that the show’s actors are only in one-year contracts for a season-long character arc.

So you know what that means? Dolores-Paul body switching confirmed, baby! Just kidding — but would you really put it past a show like Westworld?

Mark Zuckerberg subtly made a case for not breaking up Facebook

Here's a reason why Facebook should keep control of Instagram and WhatsApp.
Here’s a reason why Facebook should keep control of Instagram and WhatsApp.

2017%2f09%2f19%2ffa%2frakheadshot.f59fbBy Rachel Kraus

It’s not hard to understand why Mark Zuckerberg loves the empire-consolidating Augustus Caesar.

The 3,300 word note Mark Zuckerberg published Thursday about Facebook’s approach to election interference contained some surprisingly frank insight into why Facebook has made some of the business decisions that it has. For example, Zuckerberg shared that he considered banning political ads all together (but decided against it). And that he was only opening up the platform to certain researchers because Facebook is now wary of misuse; thanks, Aleksandr Kogan!

SEE ALSO: Mark Zuckerberg will publish a series of notes wrestling with Facebook’s biggest issues

But one subtler piece of information appeared in Zuckerberg’s section about fake accounts. The billionaire founder stated that owning multiple social media businesses — including Instagram and WhatsApp — made it easier to shut down fake accounts on all platforms. In other words, he said that we’d better not break up Facebook, or it could harm the integrity of our democracy.

Here’s the full quote from the letter:

One advantage Facebook has is that we have a principle that you must use your real identity. This means we have a clear notion of what’s an authentic account. This is harder with services like Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter, YouTube, iMessage, or any other service where you don’t need to provide your real identity. So if the content shared doesn’t violate any policy, which is often the case, and you have no clear notion of what constitutes a fake account, that makes enforcement significantly harder. Fortunately, our systems are shared, so when we find bad actors on Facebook, we can also remove accounts linked to them on Instagram and WhatsApp as well. And where we can share information with other companies, we can also help them remove fake accounts too.

Facebook owns WhatsApp and Instagram, yes, but also companies like Oculus and CrowdTangle, and it has absorbed many more. In recent months, grumblings have grown louder about the might that Facebook has amassed through mergers and acquisitions. And there is momentum behind the idea that the government should break up Facebook as a monopoly.

In April, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) said that Facebook had better make changes, or risk getting broken up. In May, a coalition of labor unions and progressive organizations came together to form the Freedom from Facebook Coalition, whose primary demand is to check Facebook’s power by separating its various social networks from the mothership. A host of editorials have made the case for (and against) breaking up Facebook. A New York Attorney General candidate has promised to look into whether Facebook is violating anti-trust laws. And Zuckerberg even faced questions about whether Facebook was a monopoly in his appearance before Congress and the European Parliament.

To be clear, breaking up Facebook would be very, very bad for Facebook. Instagram was recently valued at $100 million. And while Facebook’s growth, especially among youth, is in decline, Instagram is still one of the favored platforms of The Youth. And Facebook is beginning to seriously monetize WhatsApp as it grows in popularity, and has started taking the place of Facebook as the primary way people get their news.

So, sure. Zuckerberg is talking about national and democratic security, here. But with ill will and questions still abounding about how powerful Facebook should be, really, any pros Zuckerberg can throw into the ring for keeping Facebook a unified platform are definitely conspicuous.

We see you, Zuck. The FTC does too.

Biden mocks Trump for denying Puerto Rico death toll

Former Vice President Joe Biden mocked President Donald Trump on Thursday for questioning Puerto Rico’s official death toll from Hurricane Maria.

Biden, in a speech in Washington on labor and the economy, contested the pair of tweets that Trump wrote earlier in the day, in which the president said that “3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico” and that Democrats had fabricated the number, engaging in “bad politics” to tarnish his reputation. The former vice president accused Trump of willingly ignoring the issues facing the United States.

Story Continued Below

“By the way, there’s no problems in America, everybody is doing well, things are fair and decent, and no one died in Puerto Rico,” Biden quipped in his introductory remarks.

As the initial waves of Hurricane Florence lashed the Carolinas early Thursday, Trump was unable to move on from criticism of the federal response to Maria, which hit Puerto Rico in September 2017 and resulted in close to 3,000 deaths. The official death count swelled from 64 after the release of an independent study from The George Washington University that the Puerto Rican government ordered.

Trump has doubled down on praise for his administration’s response, calling it an “incredible, unsung success” on Tuesday.

Biden, who was the keynote speaker at an event on wages hosted by the Century Foundation, an economic think tank, also drew a connection between the anxieties of workers and what he sees as a rise in American populism.

“People being able to earn a fair minimum wage is the ultimate antidote to all of this foolishness that’s going on, with this phony populism and this naked nationalism that’s being promulgated,” he said. “When things are tough economically for people who work hard, there are sometimes charlatans that come along to try to find a reason for those people to blame whatever is happening to them on the other, on the immigrant, on that black man or woman.”

Biden distinguished between the unemployment numbers often cited by Trump and the conditions under which Americans work, including the lack of collective bargaining and the inability of families to afford the rising cost of living.

Research from the Economic Policy Institute released on Thursday in partnership with the Century Foundation showed that wages have been growing slowly and unequally in the past four decades. According to the research, wages have increased 0.4 percent per year, on average, when adjusted for inflation.

Biden, who is mulling a 2020 run for the presidency and has clashed with Trump before, also criticized Washington politicians for being “elitist” and thinking they should not listen to the concerns of middle- and lower-income workers. He admitted that the Democratic Party had ignored “the lack of the ability of the average worker to bargain for their wages” as a significant concern in politics.

“In both parties, occasionally, we’ve been elitist and think if they’re high school-educated folks, they don’t really understand what’s going on,” the former vice president said. “But they understand. People are listening and they’re afraid. And when they are working one or two jobs and they’re still in trouble … they’re susceptible to demagoguery.”

Eminem’s ‘Lucky You’ Video Sends A Message To Young Rappers: He’s Watching

YouTube

Since dropping his ninth album, Kamikaze, out of the blue in late August, Eminem‘s been in the news a lot. Most of the headlines stem from the rapper’s ongoing beefs with everyone from Joe Budden to Machine Gun Kelly, but it appears Em is now turning the focus back on promoting his new project. After outrunning his critics in the eerie video for “Fall,” Em now finds himself stalked by copycats in the vid for the Joyner Lucas-featuring “Lucky You,” released on Thursday (September 13). (And no, they’re not the bleached Slim Shady clones from the 2000 VMAs… though that would’ve been pretty great.)

The inspiration behind the vid is pretty straightforward: Eminem inspired an entire generation of MCs, and he believes they shamelessly and deliberately copy his every move. The video takes that concept literally, as hordes of hooded, red-eyed men imitate him and Lucas as they rap on top of wrecked cars in a run-down town. Em and Lucas proceed to have some fun with it, making their imitators dab, hump the air, and hop on one foot while patting their heads. Lightheartedness aside, however, it’s clear Em is sending a message to the hip-hop world: They may be watching his every move, but he’s watching them, too.

Though Kamikaze has sparked countless debates about the return of Slim Shady, the album still sold enough to deliver the ninth No. 1 album of Eminem’s career. Maybe this was the revival fans were waiting for.

Here’s how to get pre-approved for the iPhone Upgrade Program

Every product here is independently selected by Mashable journalists. If you buy something featured, we may earn an affiliate commission which helps support our work.

Apple is continuing to give iPhone Upgrade Program members the deluxe treatment.

Members can get pre-approved for the iPhone XS and XS Max right now. This pre-reservation process launched last year, and it makes pre-ordering new Apple devices incredibly easily.

SEE ALSO: Which new iPhone is right for you?

If you want to be among the first to receive the new iPhones, you must be pre-approved by 4 p.m. PT (7 p.m. ET) on Thursday, Sept. 13. Apple will close the pre-approval window at this time.

Open up the Apple Store app

Image: screenshot by jake krol/mashable

If you’re already an iPhone Upgrade Program member, upon opening the Apple Store app, you’ll see a window at the top saying “Get a head start on your upgrade.” The first step is to click that, and you’ll then see the same steps as years past.

  • Confirm your upgrade eligibility

  • Choose your preferred iPhone

  • Get pre-approved for your iPhone Upgrade Program Loan

Next, it will show your current iPhone, and will let you pick your new iPhone. Be sure to choose the correct model you want. When it comes time to place the order, the app will walk you through a menu where you can choose your next phone. You’re also going to go through the loan approval process, and then you’ll finally be approved for a new iPhone.

Image: screenshot by jake krol/mashable

AppleCare is a little different this year

In years past, Apple has included the price of its extended warranty program, AppleCare+, in the cost of the iPhone Upgrade Program’s monthly payment. This year is a little different. Now, customers can pay for the new AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss warranty program for an additional $4.17 per month.

The extra cost is completely worth it, and we’d strongly recommend it to anyone who’s a part of the program. Customers in the past have complained that standard AppleCare+ did not cover stolen or lost devices. Finally, this year, Apple has addressed that concern (for an extra fee, of course). The minuscule price increase is so small, we’d be crazy not to recommend it.

Confirm your information

If you’re already enrolled in the iPhone Upgrade Program, it will pre-populate your information and have you confirm it. You’ll also be prompted to enter your carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, or Verizon), including the pin or password for the account.

If you’re new to the program, it will have you fill out all this information, and you’ll also have to link your iPhone Upgrade Program account to your carrier.

Once the information is confirmed, it will show you the loan, and have you agree to all the information. If you’re already in the program, this should be familiar. The amount might differ depending on the phone you choose.

You will then enter your Social Security Number to confirm your identity, and the app will run a quick credit check. If your finances are in order, you’ll be approved for the loan.

Pre-order waiting game continues

Image: screenshot by jake krol/mashable

After all of this, as long as the app says you’re approved, you’re set to receive your iPhone at the earliest possible time for iPhone Upgrade Program members. At 12 a.m. PT (3 a.m. ET) on Sept. 14, open the Apple Store app again, and click the box at the top.

The message will change to one that prompts you to complete your order, you can choose whether to have your phone shipped to you, or whether you’d prefer to pick it up at a local Apple Store.

Keep in mind that if you’re a recurring member, you will need to hand your old iPhone in. That’s part of how this program works. If you choose to get your iPhone shipped to you, Apple will include a return box for your old iPhone.

Keep in mind that Apple closes the ability to get pre-approved at 4 p.m. PT (7 p.m. ET) on Sept. 13, so make sure to get it done!

Best of luck pre-ordering your iPhone XS or XS Max. We hope you’re as excited as we are!

Riot Games COO accused of sexual and physical harassment

Image: riot games/mashable composite

2016%2f10%2f06%2fcf%2funtitled48.27c77By Kellen Beck

More allegations of sexism and harassment have surfaced against Riot Games, the developers behind one of the most popular multiplayer games of all time, League of Legends.

Kotaku published an article on the accusations Wednesday evening, roughly a month after its bombshell report detailing a pattern of sexism, misogyny, and harassment at Riot Games — suggesting little has changed in the intervening weeks.

That initial report brought to light allegations of systemic sexism from current and former employees of Riot Games, including instances of men openly commenting on women’s looks, women’s ideas being routinely dismissed, and a lack of opportunities for women at the company. Riot Games, which has a staff that’s 80 percent male, was accused by numerous employees of fostering a toxic “bro culture.”

In the follow-up report published Wednesday, Kotaku reported on allegations against Riot Games’ chief operating officer Scott Gelb, who was accused by multiple unnamed sources of “touching men’s genitals” and “farting near or on male employees.”

Gelb has also been known to “jokingly hump colleagues.”

“Everyone knew who did it. Some people thought it was funny.”

One employee told Kotaku that this kind of behavior was expected from the executive.

“The ball grabbing and things like that — that was absolutely well known across the board,” the employee told Kotaku. “Everyone knew who did it. Some people thought it was funny. Some of us looked at it and thought, ‘Uh, is that really how you want to do this?’ But he got promoted. It was well known he did that and no one stopped it.”

Kotaku also reported that a higher-up male at Riot Games has been accused of making sexual comments at work and even molested a female employee.

In a lengthy statement, a spokesperson for Riot Games told Mashable that a “change” is needed in the company, though it did not comment on the allegations made against Gelb.

“We strongly agree that this change needs to start at the top and we hold that everyone accountable [sic],” Riot Games said in a statement. “We will ensure that we have the right leaders in place to drive the change that we know Riot needs.”

Kotaku noted that a handful of former Riot Games employees have supported the claims made in the initial report, including former director of product management Barry Hawkins, who separately detailed his own fruitless experience trying to get co-founders Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill to realize that homophobic comments and rape jokes are not appropriate for the workplace.

In its statement to Mashable, Riot Games said it has investigated, is investigating, or will investigate every claim from employees.

“Appropriate action is a top priority for us,” a spokesperson for the company said.

Of course, we’ve heard this before. Nearly a month after the initial report from early August, Riot issued an apology with a promise to do better.

Few public-facing results have emerged, though VentureBeat reported Wednesday that Riot has hired former Uber executive Frances Frei as a senior diversity and culture adviser.

David Wright to Be Activated for Mets’ Final Homestand After Various Injuries

New York Mets third baseman David Wright will be activated to the 40-man roster Sept. 25 ahead of his long-awaited return to the lineup Sept. 29 during the team’s final homestand.

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com provided the updated timetable Thursday and passed along comments from the seven-time All-Star, who hasn’t played in the major leagues since 2016 because of spinal stenosis along with enduring neck and shoulder injuries.

“It’s truly been an honor to take the field with you, and serve as your captain,” Wright told reporters about his teammates. “To the fans, words can’t address my gratitude.”

Tina Cervasio of Fox 5 NY highlighted more of Wright’s remarks:

Tina Cervasio @TinaCervasio

Long emotional thank yous to those who have impacted #DavidWright and his #Mets career. @FOX5DESK @fox5ny https://t.co/X5HCABjVQ2

The 35-year-old Virginia native hinted the late-season appearances could mark the end of his career, though he didn’t answer directly when asked if he’ll retire.

“Physically, the way I feel right now, and from what the docs told me, there’s not going to be any improvement,” he said. “So I don’t see [playing full time again] as a possibility.”

Wright posted a .904 OPS with 18 home runs and 17 stolen bases across 112 games in 2013.

His impact has steadily faded since then, however. His OPS dropped to .698 the following season before playing 38 and 37 games, respectively, over the next two years because of injuries. He missed all of 2017.

After a few halted comeback attempts, he finally made it out for a rehab assignment in the Mets’ minor league system last month. He struggled, posting a .171/.209/.195 triple-slash line with no homers across 41 at-bats in the minors.

The Mets, who own a 66-78 record, will soon get eliminated from playoff contention. That provides additional incentive to give Wright a chance to play in the majors again in front of the home fans at Citi Field, especially if retirement is his next step.

It’s unclear whether the two-time Gold Glove Award winner will be available for pinch-hitting or defensive-replacement duties during the three-game series against the Atlanta Braves, who are trying to lock down the NL East division title and a playoff berth, starting Sept. 25.

The Mets then close out the regular season when they take on the Miami Marlins, with the middle contest of that three-game set scheduled as Wright’s return to the starting lineup.

France admits torture during Algeria’s war of independence

France acknowledged for the first time it was responsible for systematic torture during the Algerian war of independence in the mid-1950s.

President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that Maurice Audin, a communist pro-independence activist who disappeared in 1957, “died under torture stemming from the system instigated while Algeria was part of France”.

Macron, who paid a visit to Audin’s widow on Thursday, was also set to announce “the opening of archives on the subject of disappeared civilians and soldiers, both French and Algerian”.

During the 1954-62 war, which claimed some 1.5 million Algerian lives, French forces cracked down on independence fighters in the colony ruled by Paris for 130 years.

Macron told Audin’s widow: “The only thing I am doing is to acknowledge the truth.”

Josette Audin told reporters at her apartment in the east Paris suburb of Bagnolet: “I never thought this day would come.”

Disappearances

Starting with former President Jacques Chirac in 2003, French leaders have at various points denounced the suffering that the occupation of Algeria caused the indigenous population, before walking back or tempering their statements.

But none until Macron, however, acknowledged France’s responsibility in the torture of Algerian detainees.

During the war, the French government censored newspapers, books, and films that claimed it had used torture. After the war, atrocities committed by its troops remained a taboo subject in French society.

Rim-Sarah Alouane, an international human rights jurist and a PhD candidate in public law at Toulouse University, told Al Jazeera that justice was finally being served.

“I think this very welcoming decision by President Macron was the natural next step to take in this very heavy history. It had to be done for the sake of both countries,” Alouane said.

“A lot of mysteries around the disappearances of people who fought during the Algerian war of independence remain, mysteries that have affected thousands and thousands of families.”

Alouane said while the declaration does not amount to an apology, it’s an important step given that colonisation is still a taboo subject in France.

Historian Sylvie Thenault said the French state’s acknowledgement that Audin’s death resulted from a “system” pointed to a broader recognition of wrongdoing.

“Through recognition of the state’s responsibilities in the disappearance of Maurice Audin, have the state’s responsibilities in all disappearances in Algiers in 1957 not been recognised?” she wrote in The Conversation, a news website.

Facing the past

Macron, the first president born after the conflict, sparked controversy on the campaign trail last year by declaring that France’s colonisation of Algeria was a “crime against humanity”.

He later walked back the comments calling for “neither denial nor repentance” over France’s colonial history.

Reporting from Paris, Al Jazeera’s Natacha Butler said Thursday’s announcement had deep symbolic meaning and would bring closure for Audin’s widow 60 years later – and may help others with the opening of the archives.

“It’s a very significant statement indeed. It closes a chapter for her, and it perhaps opens one for others because relatives of people who died at the time will be able to find out what happened to their loved ones,” she said.

An assistant professor at the University of Algiers, Audin was 25 when he was arrested at his home – likely by French soldiers – accused of harbouring communist independence fighters.

The father-of-three was tortured repeatedly in a villa in the Algiers neighbourhood of El Biar. Josette Audin was told 10 days later her husband had escaped while being transferred between jails.

This remained the official version of events until 2014, when Macron’s predecessor, Francois Hollande, acknowledged Audin died in detention.

A 2014 book by journalist Jean-Charles Deniau claimed the mathematician was killed by a French army officer on the orders of General Jacques Massu.

That order was confirmed by another general, Paul Aussaresses, who died in 2013 after admitting he tortured and killed dozens of prisoners.

House, Senate leaders strike spending deal, tie Trump’s hands on shutdown

Richard Shelby

“Last night, we were able to resolve our remaining differences on this package,” Senate Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) announced Thursday at a meeting of more than a dozen appropriators, referring to the bill. | Al Drago/Getty Images

If the president vetoes it, however, he could force the government to close.

House and Senate spending leaders said Thursday they have struck a deal on a massive package that would fund two-thirds of government, including some of the largest federal agencies — and the bill would also box in President Donald Trump.

Party leaders also crafted the final fiscal 2019 package in a way they believe will be politically impossible for Trump to reject: The two-bill package will also be coupled with a stopgap funding bill to keep the government open through Dec. 7.

Story Continued Below

If Trump vetoes it, he would force a shutdown — which would include a shuttering of some Pentagon operations.

“Last night, we were able to resolve our remaining differences on this package,” Senate Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) announced today at a meeting of more than a dozen appropriators, referring to the bill.

The final details on the measure, which pairs the Defense and Labor-HHS-Education bills, haven’t yet been released. Legislative text is expected by the end of the week.

But negotiators said in a rare public meeting that the finalized package would largely strip out partisan language favored by House Republicans. That means lawmakers rejected attempts to defund Planned Parenthood or destabilize Obamacare, as well as a slew of other perennial conservative riders.

Democratic-led efforts, such as adding language to clarify that federal funding can’t be used to buy guns for teachers, were also rejected.

“I’m delighted this bill is free from harmful riders,” Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) said, adding that she was “disappointed” her own language related to arming teachers wasn’t included.

The minibus is expected to see a final vote in the Senate next week, with the House to follow suit the following week, just ahead of the Sept. 30 deadline.

The Trump administration has not yet weighed in on the final package, which contains billions more dollars than requested, particularly for domestic agencies.

“The president will have to sign this bill or shut down the government, because it contains the continuing resolution,” DeLauro said.
