The best VPNs for Mac users

There are a number of reasons why you might want to start using a virtual private network or VPN. VPNs offer many benefits, like getting around geographic restrictions for streaming content.

They can also help protect your privacy and make browsing more secure (though it’s always a good idea to vet your VPN provider’s claims carefully — some do a better a job than others).

SEE ALSO: Do you need a VPN? Quite possibly. Here’s why.

But choosing the right VPN for you can be a daunting task. With so many options, you’ll want to think carefully about which features are most important to you and how much you’re willing to pay.

Nord VPN

Nord VPN is pretty easy to use.

Nord VPN is pretty easy to use.

Image: NORD vpn

Nord VPN offers a good balance between features and ease of use. Setup is relatively easy and Nord’s interface is much more intuitive than some VPNs. The service has more than 3,000 servers in 60 countries, so you can find coverage just about anywhere. Switching between countries is as easy choosing from a dropdown menu in your Mac’s menu bar.

The privacy-conscious will appreciate Nord’s built in “kill switch,” which lets you automatically stop specified applications should your connection drop. The Mac app was also recently updated to ensure that your VPN connection won’t be interrupted when your computer goes to sleep.

If speed is one of your main concerns, Nord offers an at-a-glance look the current load for each of its servers so you can optimize your connection even further.

Opera

The best thing about Opera? The price. (It's free.)

The best thing about Opera? The price. (It’s free.)

Image: opera browser

Opera’s browser-based VPN service is one of the easiest VPNs to use. Since the VPN is built directly into Opera’s browser, it requires almost no setup — all you have to do is enable it from the “privacy and security” menu in settings. Once enabled, you can toggle it on or off right from the URL bar. Better still, it’s completely free with no caps on data.

It does have limitations, though. Because it’s built into the browser it can only protect web traffic routed through the browser, so it won’t do anything for any other application you use. It also lacks a kill switch and only provides a couple of options for switching up your location.

But it’s difficult to argue with free. If you’re looking for a basic VPN for web-browsing, Opera will more than do the trick.

Price: Free. Download Opera here.

PIA

PIA has tons of options.

PIA has tons of options.

PIA, which stands for Private Internet Access, is one of the simplest VPN services you can use. Once you’ve installed PIA, you control everything from a dropdown menu in the Mac menu bar.

With more than 3,000 servers in 28 countries, PIA offers a sizable number of countries and regions to set as your location of choice, making it ideal for streamers trying to get around geographic restrictions. It’s also one of the easiest VPNs to use: once you’ve connected to the VPN, there are no other settings or menus to muck around with unless you feel like diving into the service’s advanced security features.

If you do, you’ll find controls that will help you lock down PIA’s already good security settings even further.

Price: $6.95/month, $39.95/year, or $69.95 for two years. Download PIA here.

Pure VPN

Pure

Image: pure vpn

Image: pure vpn

Pure VPN is unique in comparison to other services, in that it optimizes your connection based on what “mode” you want to use. It offers modes for streaming, “internet freedom,” privacy, file-sharing, and dedicated IP.

Some might find this too limiting — why should you have to choose between a fast streaming connection and privacy — but all your activity is kept private no matter what mode you’re in. And the dedicated IP mode helps deal with some of the speed issues VPNs frequently face.

In addition, the service has other features most people expect from VPN and the ability to easily change your location from a list of dozens of countries. It also has built-in protections against pesky malware, viruses, and ads.

Pure also offers extensions for Chrome and other browsers, which let you control your connection directly from your browser.

Price: $9.95/month (month-to-month), $2.45/month (for two years), or $7.95/month (for six months).

Download Pure VPN here.

TorGuard

TorGuard is great for those using torrent sites.

TorGuard is great for those using torrent sites.

Image: TorGuard

As its name suggests, TorGuard is really targeted toward those who frequent torrent sites. It offers a “stealth” service that it claims can get around even the most advanced firewalls designed to root out VPN users and the company says it doesn’t keep any logs of users’ activity.

Its download speeds are also optimized for torrents and the the service doesn’t place any data caps on users. And, with more than a thousand servers in dozens of countries, TorGuard offers a lot of flexibility in choosing a location.

Finally, a single subscription buys you access for up to five different devices, all of which can be connected to the VPN simultaneously.

Price: $9.99/month, $59.99/year, $99.99 for two years (TorGuard also offers quarterly and semi-annual rates). Download it here.

TunnelBear

TunnelBear has a lovely interface.

TunnelBear has a lovely interface.

TunnelBear is the kind of service you’d recommend to your mom, or someone who needs a VPN but isn’t very tech-savvy. While the user interfaces of many other VPN services can easily be overwhelming to the uninitiated, TunnelBear makes it super easy to understand what you’re doing at any given moment.

That’s because TunnelBear uses animations depicting — what else — tunnels and bears to illustrate your current connection status. Yes, it’s a bit cheesy, but it’s also kind of cute.

More importantly, it was one of the faster VPNs we tested (when set to auto-connect) and TunnelBear doesn’t skimp on privacy protection or encryption. Besides the standard security features, it also offers a VigilantBear feature (the services version of a kill switch) and GhostBear (a feature that helps you circumvent VPN blockers).

Price: Free (500MB of data/month), $9.99/month, $49.88/year. Download it here.

VPN Unlimited

VPN Unlimited is a one stop shop.

VPN Unlimited is a one stop shop.

VPN Unlimited offers a little bit of everything. The service operates more than 400 servers in more than 70 locations and supports multiple encryption standards, including AES 128-bit and AES 256-bit. It has a kill switch feature and an extra stealth setting, called “KeepSolid Wise,” which is optimized for use in countries that tend to block VPNs.

Novices will also appreciate the relatively straightforward setup process and easy-to-understand interface, which makes getting started a snap.

Power users will appreciate VPN Unlimited‘s additional services, like the ability to get your own dedicated VPN server, set your own static IP, or the ability to set up your VPN directly on your router (which lets you use your VPN with any device that connects to it). These features will add an additional cost on top of your normal subscription, but it’s nice to have the option for those who want to get a little more from their VPN.

Price: $9.99/month, $49.99/year, and $119.99 for a lifetime plan (normally $499.99). Download it here.

Indian rupee crisis: ‘Worst is not yet over’

The Indian rupee, which has fallen by more than 12 percent this year against the US dollar, is currently the worst performing currency in Asia.

A strong US dollar and high oil prices, coupled with investors dumping emerging markets’ currencies and a record high current account deficit – a measurement of a country’s trade where the value of its imports exceeds the value of its exports – are proving a toxic mix for the rupee.

On Wednesday, it hit a record low of 72.91 against the US dollar.

The slide has pushed up prices of imported items such as petroleum products, commodities, electronics and engineering equipment – and analysts warn the “worst is not yet over”.

India’s cash crunch persists as swap deadline passes

“In the medium term, India should brace for more rupee weakness, due to a further pickup of inflation. We expect the rupee to reach a steady rate of somewhere around 75 [against the US dollar],” said Hugo Erken, chief economist at the Dutch multinational RaboBank.

‘Global crisis’

A number of emerging economies – including Turkey and Argentina – have seen the value of their currencies drop against the US dollar in recent months amid rising trade tensions between the United States and China that have rattled international investors.

Mohan Guruswamy, former economic adviser to the Indian government, says the international instability has added to the rupee’s woes.

“The crisis is ongoing. The rupee fall is partly a global crisis as well, all thanks to [US President Donald] Trump and his declaration of a trade war which is adding to the pressure and the uncertainty,” Guruswamy told Al Jazeera.

India’s policymakers have long blamed offshore traders for aggravating falls in the rupee with speculative bets in currency-based contracts traded in financial centres such as Singapore.

Millions of Indians are lining up to exchange obsolete bank notes

“The short term sell-off that we have seen is worrying,” says Erken, citing a combination of factors contributing to it.

“Global tensions over trade, stubbornly high oil price and, of course, country-specific turmoil in Turkey [central bank independency and inflation], Brazil [elections], South Africa [deteriorating institutional quality] and Argentina [low reserves, high inflation, high foreign currency debt],” he says.

Impact of rupee slide

Higher oil prices pose significant risks for the economy of India, which imports more than two-thirds of its fuel needs

Burgeoning oil import bills could put further downward pressure on the rupee and widen the country’s trade deficit – according to official figures, India’s imports last month stood at $45bn while exports were almost $28bn.

“If you have persistent trade imbalances, persistent current account deficit, the rupee would keep on falling. There is a greater demand for dollars as the rupee weakens,” says Guruswamy.

In such a situation, more people tend to sell rupees to buy dollars, or any other foreign currency that they require.

The weaker currency is also sparking foreign sales of bonds and stocks, which in turn is further pressuring the rupee.

“Money is flowing back to America amid a stronger dollar and incentives for people to keep their money in the US,” says Guruswamy.

He adds that the steady slump in the Indian currency has a negative impact on Indian consumers “as petrol and diesel prices are going up” but provides exporters with a “short term” gain “by making them more competitive”.

Checking the fall

The rupee’s defence in recent years has largely rested on a strategy from the central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), to drain cash from domestic money markets and raise short-term interest rates.

On Tuesday, the central bank sold dollars in the market to stem the rupee’s weakness.

But Guruswamy warns “there’s a limit to how much the central bank can defend” the rupee. “In the past few weeks, they have sold over $20bn. We cannot deplete our foreign reserves.”

According to estimates, India’s foreign reserves currently stand at $400bn, down from a record high of $426bn in April.

On Friday, the rupee strengthened by 50 paisa to 71.68 against the dollar in early trade in the forex market, on the back of a government assurance that all steps would be taken to ensure the domestic currency does not depreciate to “unreasonable levels”.

However, analysts such as Erken, of RaboBank, warn against over-intervention.

“It [the government] has to tread carefully. Large-scale currency interventions have the same effect as raising rates and the RBI certainly would not want to derail the current economic growth momentum,” Erken said.

Silver lining

India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party acknowledges that the currency’s fall is a matter of concern, but dismisses doomsayers’ predictions for the economy.

It insists the economic fundamentals remain sound, with some saying the rupee’s depreciation will help make exports more competitive and reduce imports.

“Rupee is not weakening, rather it is the dollar strengthening against all other currencies,” ruling party spokesperson Zafar Islam told Al Jazeera.

“In fact, India is in a much better position than other countries like Turkey and Argentina who have huge external debt and hence much more exposed to currency risk than us,” he adds.

“The fall in the value of the rupee has also helped our exports. This month’s export figures are stronger than expectations.”

According to the ruling party, the rupee was still performing better than some other currencies and the country had sufficient foreign exchange reserves.

Analysts such as Erken say India is experiencing a “goldilocks moment” which is reasonably low inflation and high growth, clocking an 8.2 percent gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the three months through June.

What lies ahead?

“From a policy perspective, the government has been pushing hard to implement key reforms and shape a more business-friendly environment,” he says.

But others argue policymakers cannot deflect blame for the lack of investment in the economy or policies that have allowed the current account deficit to reach unsustainable levels.

There’s no quick fix to the crisis, warns Guruswamy.

“Trade imbalances have to be dealt with, current account gap has to be bridged. You have to shore up confidence among the investor community. There’s a serious trust deficit in the government. People who are investors, who deal with money, builders of the economy have no trust in the government,” he says.

Global financial firm Nomura warns of further turbulence for the rupee as India gears up for a general election, due by May next year.

“The key risks [to the rupee] stem from the government turning more populist ahead of the 2019 general elections [worsening domestic fundamentals] and a sharper-than-expected domestic growth slowdown [triggering equity outflows],” a company statement released on 10 September said.

For his part, Erken says India should brace itself for the impact of further US punitive measures against China.

“Another spoiler would be further protectionist announcements by the Trump administration. We expect another $200bn of Chinese imports to be levied before the [US] midterm elections,” he says.

“This would fuel anxiety among investors, and we can expect another round of emerging market currency sell-offs.”

The story behind Bongo Cat, the adorable music meme that’s taking over Twitter

2018%2f04%2f02%2f74%2fheadshot.edeb7By Morgan Sung

Scrolling through Twitter is like wading through a steaming pool of hot trash. But among the depressing stories, exhausting criticism, and increasingly aggressive interactions between people who don’t agree, you may stumble across a bright light of wholesomeness: Bongo Cat.

Bongo Cat is an adorable drawing of a cat-like figure with pointed ears, a pleasant smile, and little pink paws that pat on whatever instrument its creators add. The little cat, which seems to embody all that is good in the world, brings joy to the internet with its endless knowledge of songs.

SEE ALSO: Move Aside, Keyboard Cat. It’s Time for Otters to Take the Stage.

Although the meme has been around throughout the summer, it’s been rapidly gaining popularity over the last week.

The meme started with a doodle by @StrayRogue, who said they “post from time to time, just for myself and my followers.”

In the GIF, a little creature — which StrayRogue clarified is a “cat-like blob” and “not actually a cat” — pats its little paws on a table as if it’s waiting for a meal or tapping out a jaunty tune.

This is what Bongo Cat’s full body looks like, according to StrayRogue.

Fellow artist @DitzyFlama added a cheery song and a set of bongos for the little cat-blob to drum on.

Since May, @DitzyFlama has inspired other artists to post their versions of the cat-blob.

Meme account @pormethamemez edited a version in mid-May of the cat shredding an electric guitar.

The meme blew up when @ItsAbouTimeJoey posted an edit of the cat dancing to Earth, Wind, and Fire’s “September.”

DitzyFlama even made a tribute to Stefán Karl Stefánsson, who played Robbie Rotten on Lazy Town and was mourned by the internet earlier this year after he passed away.

The cat-like blob’s creator was surprised that their absentminded doodle became so widely shared.

“I never expected it to take off this far,” StrayRogue said over Twitter DM. “It does make me happy seeing all the alternate versions that people come up with.”

They noted that it’s probably so well loved because it reminds people of the classic keyboard cat meme, adding that because it’s such a simple format, it’s flexible enough to be “rehashed in many different forms.”

“Overall though, I’m just happy it turned out to be something people like,” StrayRogue said.

So if you need a break from the rest of the internet, watch a few Bongo Cat videos. Your brain will thank you.

NASA video shows Hurricane Florence from space as it makes landfall

On Friday morning, Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina, bringing extreme winds, surging seas, and huge amounts of rain to the coast.

While forecasters have been keeping a close eye on the storm from the ground, the International Space Station watched the slow-moving hurricane make landfall from above.

SEE ALSO: Stunning astronaut photos show multiple hurricanes swirling in the Atlantic

A new 5-minute video from the space station shows Florence coming ashore in the U.S. for the first time.

“Cameras outside the International Space Station captured views of Hurricane Florence on Sept. 14 at 7:41 a.m. EDT minutes after the storm made landfall near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina packing winds of 90 miles an hour,” NASA said in a video description

“The National Hurricane Center said Florence is moving very slowly to the west at only 6 miles an hour, then is expected to turn to the southwest, increasing the threat for historic storm surge and catastrophic flooding to coastline areas and inland cities in North Carolina and South Carolina.”

NASA astronaut Ricky Arnold also captured Florence making landfall from his spot on the orbiting outpost.

The photo shows just how huge Florence looks, with its wind field stretching for hundreds of miles.

Forecasters are predicting that the storm will continue to weaken but still dump potentially record-breaking amounts of rain as it moves slowly inland.

“Heavy rain has been occurring in and around Oriental, North Carolina, where 20.37 inches of rainfall has been measured thus far,” the National Hurricane Center said in an update

These types of slow-moving storms — like Hurricane Harvey — can be particularly dangerous because of the rain and flooding they can bring.

According to a study in June, hurricanes and typhoons, on average, appear to be slowing down in part because of human-caused climate change.

As the climate warms, the way air moves through the atmosphere can become disrupted, possibly blocking these types of storms in place more often.

A warming climate also means that the atmosphere can hold more and more water vapor, fueling hurricanes with even more water that can fall on coastal areas.

The San Antonio Spurs reportedly had their sights set really high in Kawhi Leonard trade talks with the Philadelphia 76ers.

On The Lowe Podcast, ESPN’s Zach Lowe said the Spurs wanted “one of the two big guys” in a potential trade, referring to Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

“There is no evidence that the Spurs wanted [Markelle] Fultz,” Lowe said on his Lowe Post podcast. “I’ve been told the Spurs never asked for Fultz, and actively didn’t want Fultz, and in fact wanted one of the two big guys.”

San Antonio’s haul for Leonard ultimately proved to be much lower than its aim. They got DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl and a 2019 first-round pick from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Leonard and Danny Green.

This article will be updated to provide more information on this story as it becomes available.

Manafort’s pro-Ukraine lobbying campaign reached Obama, Biden

Paul Manafort’s pro-Ukraine campaign reached the top of the White House, with one of the members of his lobbying effort meeting President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in 2013, according to new court documents released Friday.

A member of the so-called Hapsburg Group, which comprised former European politicians Manafort convened as part of his lobbying effort in support of Ukraine’s then-President Viktor Yanukovych, came with a foreign prime minister on May 16, 2013, to meet with Obama and Biden, “as well as senior United States officials in the executive and legislative branches,” according to the court documents.

Story Continued Below

Alan Friedman, a former journalist based in Europe who helped Manafort launch the group, told Manafort after the meeting that the member of the Hapsburg Group “delivered the message of not letting ‘Russians steal Ukraine from the West,’” prosecutors say.

Manafort, President Donald Trump’s former campaign chief, pleaded guilty Friday to two criminal charges from special counsel Robert Mueller to head off a potentially dramatic trial over allegations he violated laws on foreign lobbying. The court documents released Friday say Manafort failed to register as a foreign lobbyist, as required under U.S. law, or disclose a host of meetings, including the one involving Obama and Biden.

The lobbying effort that caught prosecutors’ attention tried to persuade the U.S. government to support Yanukovych, who was at the time under international fire for jailing a rival, former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. U.S. lawmakers had condemned Yanukovych’s actions, and he would later flee Ukraine for Russia after his government’s security forces beat protesters in 2013.

Court documents and filings with the Justice Department previously revealed some of the members of Manafort’s Hapsburg Group and showed that they met with dozens of members of Congress, congressional staffers and Obama administration officials. But Friday brought the first indication that the campaign stretched to the top of the U.S. government.

The court documents don’t name the member of the Hapsburg Group or the prime minister, but Obama met on May 16, 2013, with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The Turkish leader was accompanied by foreign minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and Hakan Fidan, head of Turkish intelligence.

The court documents also indicate that Manafort “orchestrated a scheme to have … ‘[O]bama jews’ put pressure on the administration” to persuade it to support Yanukovych.

As part of his effort, Manafort disseminated stories that said “a senior Cabinet official” who had previously criticized Yanukovych “was supporting anti-Semitism because the official backed Tymoshenko, who in turn had formed a political alliance with a Ukraine party that espoused anti-Semitic views,” the court documents state.

Manafort worked with a senior Israeli government official to provide a statement on the issue, prosecutors say, with the hope that the story would force the administration to “understand that ‘the Jewish community will take this out on Obama on election day if he does nothing.’”

Although the senior Cabinet official is not named in the documents, prior to the 2012 elections, conservative media reported accusations of anti-Semitism against then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton because of a New York Times op-ed she co-wrote with Catherine Ashton, then high representative of the European Union for foreign affairs and security policy. The op-ed voiced concern about Ukraine’s political situation.

“We regret that the convictions of opposition leaders during trials that did not meet international standards are preventing them from standing in parliamentary elections,” Clinton and Ashton wrote. “The Ukrainian government needs to address these selective prosecutions, including the case of former Prime Minister Yulia V. Tymoshenko and other former senior officials.”

Breitbart reported in October 2012 that “a Jewish leader, who asked to remain unnamed, says that Clinton’s New York Times op-ed ripping the current Ukrainian administration has ‘created a neo-Nazi Frankenstein by issuing a de facto endorsement of Mrs. Tymoshenko and her choices.’”

This little girl dancing with Michael Myers is absolutely fearless

The season of spook is slowly approaching, and that  means Halloween pop up shops across the country are gearing up for another month of horror.

While I was genuinely terrified of these places as a kid, there are children out there who are embracing all things creepy. Take this little girl who not only fearlessly approaches a prop of Michael Myers, but also dances to his theme song from Halloween right in front of him.

SEE ALSO: The new ‘Halloween’ is everything you’d want out of a new ‘Halloween’

A video of this blood-chilling encounter was uploaded onto Twitter by a user named @BadassKimberly_. Despite the creepy imagery, it’s quite honestly the cutest and most hilarious thing ever.

We’re not sure who this little girl is, or if she really understands whats going on, but you can totally tell she’s feeling the spirit of Halloween. What also makes this video even better is the slight rumbling of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” by the Eurythmics in the background. Not to sound alarming, but we need a “Halloween Theme” and “Sweet Dreams” mashup STAT.

People on Twitter also found this girl to be extremely relatable, and a true Halloween icon.

‘Animal Crossing’ fans used elaborate rituals to summon a new game

2018%2f07%2f11%2fcc%2fwebp.netresizeimage4.f6ff3By Xavier Piedra

It’s been years since the last Animal Crossing game. Some fans got so desperate that they started performing elaborate rituals to summon a new one — and maybe it worked?

Nintendo and announced a new entry in the series for the Switch yesterday during a Nintendo Direct. Sure, the company most likely had this announcement planned way in advance, but what if other supernatural elements were at play? A quick glance through Twitter reveals that many fans had arranged their Animal Crossing games, cases, Amiibos, and cards into pentagrams in hopes of materializing a new game.

SEE ALSO: The adorable villagers of ‘Animal Crossing’ give the best life advice

It may be strange, but you have to admit some of the patterns are quite impressive.

Seeing images of adorable cartoony animals arranged in an occult symbol is easily something out of a Courage the Cowardly Dog episode, and I’m here for it. Regardless, you can’t hate on the dedication of these stans.

And hey! It paid off in the end because they got their new game — even if it wasn’t technically the work of the spirits. Perhaps there is some sort of secret these Animal Crossing witches are hiding that we don’t know about.

I did an Animal Crossing Switch ritual, just in case. I have no hope whatsoever for Animal Crossing making an appearance tomorrow, but I have the amiibo, so I may as well do something with them. pic.twitter.com/yBdF18Wdt0

Jemele Hill Announces Departure from ESPN After 12 Years

LOS ANGELES, CA - JULY 17: Jemele Hill attends Heroes at the ESPYS at City Market Social House on July 17, 2018 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Rich Fury/Getty Images)

Rich Fury/Getty Images

Jemele Hill announced Friday that she is leaving ESPN after 12 years with the company.

Hill released a statement on Twitter and wrote that Friday is officially her last day at ESPN:

Jemele Hill @jemelehill

Over the last several weeks, there have been a lot of rumors about my job status. Today is my last day at ESPN.

More from me on closing one of the most special chapters in my life: https://t.co/jReaH5sWhW

Andrew Marchand of the New York Post reported in August that Hill was leaving ESPN after a buyout of her $2.5 million per year contract.

Hill joined ESPN as a columnist in 2006 before making appearances on several television shows.

In 2013, Hill began hosting Numbers Never Lie with Michael Smith, and the name of the show was later changed to His & Hers.

That ran through 2017 until Hill and Smith were chosen to co-anchor the 6 p.m. edition of SportsCenter.

Hill and Smith lasted only one year as a team on SportsCenter before ESPN made changes to the lineup in February.

In her farewell statement, Hill mentioned the pride she took in her work with Smith, leading Smith to issue the following reply:

Michael Smith @michaelsmith

@jemelehill Love you, Sis. https://t.co/xg39eueXx6

The 42-year-old Hill came under fire in September 2017 when she posted several tweets that were critical of President Donald Trump.

In one tweet, Hill called Trump a “white supremacist.”

Jemele Hill @jemelehill

@DonnyParlock @demillz84 @JayG34 Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists.

ESPN condemned the tweets, and later suspended Hill for separate tweets one month later.

The two-week suspension came after Hill tweeted about Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ stance against protesting during the national anthem:

According to Marchand, ESPN wanted to part ways with Hill due to its desire to remove itself from political discussion.

After leaving her role with SportsCenter, Hill spent time writing for ESPN’s The Undefeated until her departure.

Ex Trump aide Paul Manafort to cooperate in Russia probe

US President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman has agreed to cooperate in the special counsel investigation into possible campaign collusion with Russia.

In a plea deal to avert a second trial on money laundering and illegal lobbying charges, Paul Manafort agreed on Friday to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States and another count of obstruction of justice.

The charges do not relate to alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Prosecutor Andrew Weissman said in a federal court in Washington, DC that Manafort had struck a “cooperation agreement”, but did not elaborate on the details of the deal.

Information submitted to court by Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Friday indicate seven charges in a previous indictment against Manafort were reduced to two.

WATCH: Michael Cohen – The controversy, downfall of Trump’s ex-lawyer (2:38)

The move comes three weeks after Manafort, 69, was convicted of eight financial crimes in a separate trial in Virginia.

Those were among the first charges stemming from Mueller’s investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

In the Washtington case, prosecutors were set to lay out in great detail Manafort’s political consulting and lobbying work on behalf of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the pro-Russian Party of Regions.

According to the court filing, the charge of conspiracy against the US includes money laundering, tax fraud, failing to disclose foreign bank accounts, and acting as an unregistered lobbyist for pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine.

The second count, for conspiracy to obstruct justice, concerns attempts to tamper with witnesses related to Manafort’s foreign lobbying.

Later on Friday, the White House said Manafort’s decision to plead guilty to two criminal counts and to cooperate with the special counsel’s probe had “nothing to do” with Trump’s election victory almost two years ago.

“It is totally unrelated,” said Sarah Sanders said, White House spokesperson.

Trump has denied colluding with the Russians and the Russians have denied interfering.

Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who is now representing Trump in the Russia probe, told Reuters news agency on Friday that a guilty plea to avoid a second trial would not crush Manafort’s chances of receiving an eventual presidential pardon.

“It’s not going to hurt him if he pleads guilty. Usually it helps you get a pardon down the road. It shows you’ve admitted your guilt,” he said before a deal was announced.
