Josh Gordon Released

  • Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter

Teams already calling the Browns, who league sources believe are far more likely to trade Josh Gordon than release him.

Gordon is a vested vet and is not subject to waivers. So if he is cut, he is a free agent and can sign where he wants, for what he wants.

    A lot at stake.

Josh Gordon Released by Browns After 6-Plus Seasons with Team

CHICAGO, IL - DECEMBER 24: Josh Gordon #12 of the Cleveland Browns lines up for a play in the third quarter against the Chicago Bears at Solider Field on December 24, 2017 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Dylan Buell/Getty Images). (Photo by Dylan Buell/Getty Images)

Wide receiver Josh Gordon‘s rocky tenure with the Cleveland Browns will end Monday, as the team announced its plan to release the former Pro Bowler following Week 2:

    Tony Grossi @TonyGrossi

#Browns HC Hue Jackson on Josh Gordon: He is not going to be with us. We wish him well. We are going to move on.

The 27-year-old was among the NFL‘s top receivers when he played, but multiple drug and alcohol-related suspensions kept him off the field for over two years until his return in 2017.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported possible insight into Gordon’s release:

    Cleveland Browns @Browns

Browns to release WR Josh Gordon

Statement from GM John Dorsey: https://t.co/bQmWraH8Nr

Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported the organization was concerned about substance abuse.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported teams are already calling the Browns with the belief the team will trade him instead of release him.

Appearing in five games, Gordon had 18 receptions for 335 yards and one touchdown for the 0-16 Browns in 2017.

He made a 17-yard touchdown catch against the AFC North rival Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 before suffering a hamstring injury that will keep him out of Sunday’s clash with the New Orleans Saints

After being suspended for the entire 2015 campaign, he served a four-game ban to begin 2016, but he opted to enter a rehab facility shortly before being reinstated.

According to ESPN.com’s Pat McManamon, Gordon released the following statement regarding his decision:

“After careful thought and deep consideration I’ve decided that I need to step away from pursuing my return to the Browns and my football career to enter an in-patient rehabilitation facility. This is the right decision for me and one that I hope will enable me to gain full control of my life and continue on a path to reach my full potential as a person. I appreciate the support of the NFL, NFLPA, the Browns, my teammates, my agent and the community through this extremely challenging process.”

With Gordon out of the picture in favor of his getting help, Browns head coach Hue Jackson said this about his future with the team, per Tony Grossi of ESPN.com:

    Ian Rapoport @RapSheet

On Josh Gordon: He was late today to the facility, source said. In addition, he was fine at Friday’s practice, then injured his hamstring. The question of how is part of the reason they released him. My understanding is it’s an overall trust issue for a player on thin ice.

In addition to his time missed from 2015 through 2017, he was suspended two games in 2013 and 11 contests in 2014.

Despite missing a pair of games in 2013, the former Baylor and Utah standout turned in a dominant season that saw him grab 87 catches for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns en route to being named a first-team All-Pro.

He has struggled to return to that level since, however, due almost exclusively to the fact he has failed to comply with the NFL’s substance-abuse policy on numerous occasions.

There figures to be an opportunity available for Gordon somewhere in the league, and he could make the Browns regret their decision if he comes anywhere close to the form he displayed a few years ago.

BMW shows off its iNext electric, autonomous concept car

As I approached San Francisco International Airport, my expectations for BMW’s new concept car were as big as the looming Boeing 777F Lufthansa cargo jet waiting for me.

I had surrendered my cellphone and everything in my purse but my drivers license to see BMW’s iNext vehicle. Its tour started in Munich a few days earlier; it came to the Bay Area after a stop at New York’s JFK airport, and was scheduled to continue on to Beijing. Talk about precious cargo.

SEE ALSO: BMW makes sure we can’t escape voice assistants while driving

After passing a final security check, I climbed up the rickety staircase with fellow media members and entered the cavernous aircraft. We had been told very little about what we were going to see, except it was not only the “car of the future” but the “idea of the future.”

Once aboard, a large screen divided the hold of the plane, which had been lined with plush teal carpet and an LED-filled floor. BMW’s Klaus Fröhlich teased us about what was behind the partition. “It’s more than a car,” he said at one point.

A promo video with bikini-clad women floating in water played and finally the screen went down and the car was revealed while a pre-recorded voice said through the speakers, “Are you ready to let go?”

I thought I was going to see the future.

I was ready for this to be like nothing I’d ever seen.

But it was just a car.

Sure it was sleek with its copper rose-gold exterior and butterfly-shaped grill that lit up and hid the car’s sensors and technology. Because it’s an emission-free vehicle, there’s no cooling system and the back didn’t have exhaust pipes, so the space was instead illuminated with a BMW blue hue. But it was still a car — an electric and autonomous SAV (sports activity vehicle) to be exact.

I thought I was going to see the future.

The backside of the iNext, the car of the future.

The backside of the iNext, the car of the future.

    Image: bMW

At this point I’ve covered my fair share of concept cars and I understand the point of them is to push what’s possible and provide inspiration for future vehicles that will actually get produced. But this moment had been so hyped, I thought I was going to see the epitome of car innovation. I was ready to not even recognize this as a car but as something else entirely.

Once I got to peer inside, the iNext seemed like it was taking on Byton’s autonomous concept car — but instead of a ludicrous dashboard screen spanning the entire length of the car, BMW was all about minimalist “shy technology” that only comes out when you need it. That’s why the steering wheel retracts, along with the pedals, leaving a flat, smooth floor. The only screens are in front of the driver’s seat.

The iNext has a minimalist interior design. The steering wheel retracts.

The iNext has a minimalist interior design. The steering wheel retracts.

    Image: bMW

The “favorite space” idea behind the interior design was reminiscent of Volvo’s autonomous vehicle idea, but way tamer. Volvo created a space where drivers could make coffee or even sleep in the car.

But BMW’s iNext seemed just like any higher-end, spacious four-seater. It still had a steering wheel, a driver’s seat, front passenger seat and backseat bench. Some elements stood out, like the “smart” material in the back seat and center console — to control the music, you just touch your finger against the fabric. It definitely had a living room vibe, but more of a living room where you aren’t allowed to eat on the couch or walk on the carpet with shoes on.

In another futuristic touch, the car doesn’t have side mirrors, but instead small cameras that are built into the edge of the car.

Even if it’s a somewhat expected space, the passenger experience still seemed luxurious and well-connected with voice control hooked up to BMW’s virtual assistant and facial recognition from interior cameras. There was even an interactive light beam projected from the back seat onto a book that lets you touch and play videos on the pages. Or it can just be a reading light.

The center console is designed to look like a living room coffee table.

The center console is designed to look like a living room coffee table.

    Image: bMW

BMW says the car will be a Level 3 semi-autonomous vehicle; that means it won’t be able to fully drive itself without human interference in all conditions (that would be Level 4 and 5 autonomy).

BMW plans to start producing iNext in 2021 with 33 sensors, chip-based LIDAR (the laser system that guides the self-driving component), and a battery based off its “i” electric cars. It will probably look a lot like what I saw on the plane, but that’s just a jumping off point.

Call me jaded, but I thought I was going to see the future. All I saw was another idea for a self-driving electric car.

Google ‘mistakenly’ altered settings on Pixel phones. Whoops.

Your confusion would be totally understandable.

A host of Pixel smartphone owners found themselves with small mystery on their hands earlier this week, after they noticed that the battery-saver feature on their phones had randomly engaged — despite the phones having almost full charges. Who, or what, was to blame? A glitch? Perhaps a forgotten setting, toggled on long ago?

Nope. It would, in fact, be Google — remotely changing settings on people’s phones in the background with no notification or warning. And oh yeah, Google didn’t even mean to.

SEE ALSO: Your Android phone pings Google a lot more than you might think

Android Police noticed the strange occurrence, reporting that a “substantial number of Pixel owners” claimed to be affected by what at first seemed like a bug. Importantly, battery saving mode changes the way your phone works in order to (you guessed it) preserve battery life. This means, among other things, that apps wouldn’t refresh unless first opened — not an ideal situation for someone waiting for an important email, for example.

According to a Google statement on r/GooglePixel, this was caused by a small slip up on the company’s end.

“[Some] of you may have noticed that battery saver turned on automatically today,” read the post. “This was an internal experiment to test battery saving features that was mistakenly rolled out to more users than intended. We have now rolled battery saver settings back to default. Please configure to your liking. Sorry for the confusion.”

Which, that clears everything up then, right? Yes and no.

    That sweet Pixel.

    Image: RAYMOND WONG/MASHABLE

While Google being able to push updates to Pixel phones is vital for all kinds of security reasons, the fact that the company could send out an “internal experiment” to consumers’ phones without those Pixel owners even being aware it happened does raise a few questions.

Namely, has anything like this happened before? And, if so, has this resulted in any problems for Pixel owners in the past?

We reached out to Google in an attempt to get to the bottom of this, but received no answer as of press time.

While mistakenly changing a phone’s settings to enable battery-saving mode at the wrong time, and then remotely quickly fixing the problem, isn’t that big of a deal, at the end of the day it does serve as a larger reminder of just how little control we have over our own devices.

And hey, next time your phone does something inexplicable and weird, you now get to wonder if someone in a nondescript Google office building accidentally clicked the wrong mouse button. Fun, right?

The 12th-ranked LSU Tigers stormed back to score a 22-21 SEC road upset of the No. 7 Auburn Tigers on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama.

Auburn scored 21 straight points from late in the second quarter through early in the third. LSU’s offense, which went dormant after an early touchdown from Clyde Edwards-Helaire, suddenly came back to life in the fourth courtesy of a 71-yard TD reception by Derrick Dillon.

The visitors capped the comeback triumph with a game-winning field goal by Cole Tracy as time expired.

    What’s Next?

Auburn will continue its stretch of four consecutive home games when it welcomes the SEC rival Arkansas Razorbacks to Jordan-Hare Stadium next Saturday.

LSU is also back on the field next Saturday when it returns to Tiger Stadium for a clash with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs out of Conference USA.

Trump launches first broadside at Mueller after Manafort plea deal

    President Donald Trump

“Highly conflicted Bob Mueller & the 17 Angry Democrats are using this Phony issue to hurt us in the Midterms. No Collusion!” President Donald Trump tweeted. | Susan Walsh/AP Photo

President Donald Trump on Saturday fired his first salvo against special counsel Robert Mueller since former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort entered a plea deal with the Russia probe’s federal prosecutors.

“While my (our) poll numbers are good, with the Economy being the best ever, if it weren’t for the Rigged Russian Witch Hunt, they would be 25 points higher!” Trump tweeted. “Highly conflicted Bob Mueller & the 17 Angry Democrats are using this Phony issue to hurt us in the Midterms. No Collusion!”

    Story Continued Below

Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani also broke his silence on Manafort’s intended guilty plea earlier Saturday, alleging in a tweet that “sources close to” Manafort’s defense team told the former New York mayor that the cooperation agreement “does not involve the Trump campaign” and that there was “no collusion with Russia” from within the Trump campaign.

Giuliani added: “Another road travelled by Mueller. Same conclusion: no evidence of collusion President did nothing wrong.”

News of Manafort’s plea deal came Friday, just days before the longtime GOP operative was due to appear in a Washington, D.C., courtroom to face charges of foreign lobbying and money laundering. Manafort was previously found guilty of eight counts of bank and tax fraud in a separate trial that took place in Virginia last month.

The breadth of Manafort’s cooperation agreement — including whether he will be asked to testify about potential coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia — is still unclear.

Trump’s tweet Saturday also comes as the president is facing a slate of polls showing his popularity on the downswing weeks away from the midterm elections.

Terry Crews shares the apology he got from Adam Venit back in March

Terry Crews has accepted an apology from Adam Venit.

SEE ALSO: Terry Crews hasn’t heard from ‘Expendables’ co-stars following assault claims

On Friday, Crews posted the apology letter he received from former William Morris Endeavor agent, the man who Crews said sexually assaulted him at an industry function in 2016. The allegations first surfaced when Crews wrote about it last fall in the wake of Harvey Weinstein’s fall and the breakout of the #MeToo movement.

Then, on Sept. 7, 2018, Crews settled a lawsuit he had filed against WME (which also happens to be Crews’ agency). As part of the conditions of the settlement, gether in this situation. I am sorry for all of it.”

After Crews came forward with his allegations last fall, Venit was suspended for a short time from his position at WME, incurring Crews’ anger when he returned to his job.

Then, on September 7, 2018, Crews settled a lawsuit he had filed against WME (which also happens to be Crews’ agency). As part of the conditions of the settlement, Crews demanded Venit resign and could not be rehired by the agency, in addition to demanding WME implement training that would hopefully prevent further such incidents.

Per the tweet, Crews appears to have accepted Venit’s apology as of Monday, Sept. 10, 2018, which also happened to be Venit’s last day. In a chat with Deadline on Friday, Crews explained, “It meant nothing without a resignation.”

Crews has remained an active supporter of the #MeToo movement. In June, he testified about his own assault in front of the Senate Judiciary Committer.

And just this week, he tweeted about the ouster of both CBS chief Les Moonves and 60 Minutes producer Jeff Fager, the two most recent example of powerful men having their (alleged) history of abuse and harassment catch up with them.

Can France heal the wounds of its colonial past?

It’s an admission of guilt that has been shrouded in secrecy and denial for around 60 years.

But this week, French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged for the first time the widespread use of torture during Algeria’s war of independence.

Algeria was a French colony for 132 years – until 1962.

During the eight years of fighting which started in 1954, the Algerian government says more than a million Algerians were killed.

France says 400,000 were killed on both sides.

French colonial rulers censored newspapers, books and films which alleged the use of torture.

After the war, atrocities committed by French troops remained a taboo subject in France.

Does Macron’s recognition of what he calls crimes against humanity change anything?
