Audi unveils its all-electric Tesla Model X competitor, the e-tron

Audi’s first all-electric car, the e-tron, is ready to plug in.

The German company’s mid-sized SUV was revealed in Richmond, California, only about 40 miles from Tesla headquarters in Fremont, where the electric Model X SUV is made.

And it’s meant to be totally … “normal.”

That’s the word Filip Brabec, Audi VP of product management, used at a launch event Monday in San Francisco.

“What was so important for us was the transition from internal combustion engine to an electric car is as seamless as possible,” he said. “We didn’t want to create a car that is edgy and quirky and different.”

To show off it’s very normal automobile, Audi took over a music venue across from City Hall, where it had e-tron sports and racing car prototypes on display. Audi also showed off its virtual side mirrors — a feature that isn’t allowed on U.S. models, only its European cars. A HoloLens exhibit let you “see” the car charging and regenerating energy from braking, and a sample fast charging station from Electrify America glowed green.

Reservations for the e-tron — which will hit the U.S. market in the middle of 2019 — opened up Monday night with a refundable $1,000 deposit. The base price for the electric SUV is $74,000. A “Prestige” version with heads-up display, driver assist features, massage seats, and more luxury add-ons is $81,800. A “First Edition” model (Audi’s making only 999 units) will be available for the increased price of $86,700.

The car’s two electric motors accelerate the e-tron from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds with a top speed of 124 mph. The batteries are beneath the car cabin and each battery stores 95 kWh of energy. The range is expected to be 250 miles — but that’s only in Europe. An American range hasn’t been determined yet. Braking can also regenerate energy for the battery.

With fast charging, the car can reach an 80 percent charge in about 30 minutes. Audi is working with Amazon Home Services to help owners install a home charging system, which will take all night to charge the vehicle.

Audi has also partnered with Electrify America, which plans to have 500 fast-charging sites around the U.S. by July 2019, many outside of retail spots like Walmart or Target.

Inside, Audi says its usual features will still be found, like the virtual cockpit, wireless smartphone charger, and touchscreen controls.

Audi execs promised a wide lineup of 20 electric and hybrid vehicles by 2025 — the e-tron is just the start. Ten will be fully electric. Its world premiere came on the same day that Volkswagen announced it would be making 27 electric vehicles by 2022.

Everyone’s going electric. Even if Audi claims “electric has gone Audi.”

Peter Dinklage wins third Emmy for role in ‘Game of Thrones’

Peter Dinklage won his third Emmy for most outstanding supporting actor in a drama series at the Emmys on Monday.

Dinklage, who plays the iconic Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones, was nominated alongside fellow Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays his brother Jaime Lannister.

For his work as Tyrion, Dinklage has been nominated in the category seven times, winning in 2011, 2015, and now 2018.

In his acceptance speech, Dinklage thanked Coster-Waldau, who earned his first Emmy nomination for his work on Game of Thrones this year.

Hopefully both actors survive the final season of Game of Thrones coming in 2019, or at least get one more nomination next year if they do meet their demise.

Mitchell Trubisky, Bears Beat Russell Wilson, Seahawks Behind Dominant Defense

Matt Nagy is no longer winless as a head coach in the NFL.

Nagy’s Chicago Bears moved to 1-1 with a 24-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Monday at Soldier Field. Chicago’s defense dictated play with its pressure, forced two turnovers and scored a touchdown. On the other side, Mitchell Trubisky overcame two interceptions with 200 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Seattle was driving to potentially tie the game in the final seven minutes, but Prince Amukamara’s pick-six of Russell Wilson helped put the game away.

What’s Next?

Both teams face NFC foes in Week 3, with Chicago on the road against the Arizona Cardinals and the Seahawks hosting the Dallas Cowboys.

Chrissy Teigen graces the internet with another awards show meme

2018%2f04%2f02%2f74%2fheadshot.edeb7By Morgan Sung

Chrissy Teigen, once again, is a whole mood.

Colin Jost and Michael Che’s painfully unfunny opening monologue drew scattered applause and awkward laughs.

SEE ALSO: Michael Che and Colin Jost try to tackle diversity in sloppy Emmys monologue

In response to a particularly terrible joke, Chrissy shrunk away from the camera and cringed into her seat when the camera panned to her and her husband John Legend.

The queen of the internet did it again, upstaging the lackluster monologue by perfectly conveying everything we all felt throughout the underwhelming rant.

Emmys viewers agreed with every face she made.

Chrissy’s previous awards show faces have become the go-to reaction gif for painfully awkward situations.

When will we get an awards show dedicated to her priceless reactions?

Michael Che and Colin Jost kick off Emmys with a lackluster monologue

Saturday Night Live “Weekend Update” hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost took their hosting chops to the Emmys, with an opening monologue that referenced #MeToo, racism, and the current political climate.

You know, light stuff!

Their monologue kicked off the 70th Annual Emmy Awards.

SEE ALSO: Emmys 2018: The full list of nominations

Jost and Che were preceded – and upstaged – by SNL co-stars Kate McKinnon and Kenan Thompson singing “We Solved It,” a song about how the Emmys solved Hollywood’s representation problem.

Che began the monologue by saying it was an honor to share the night with the “many many talented and creative people in Hollywood who haven’t been caught yet.” Jost added that there was alcohol being served and that the last thing Hollywood needs is people losing their inhibitions at a work function. True.

To commemorate the 70th Emmys, Jost noted that things were different back when they started in 1949; among other things, everyone agreed that Nazis were bad. Also true. In a later segment about shows that were canceled but subsequently picked up elsewhere, the he noted that “Roseanne was canceled by herself but picked up by white nationalists.”

Overall, the entire opening had a similar tone: just political enough to make us cringe, and not even really laugh (“The only people that thank Jesus are Republicans and ex-crackheads,” Che said. What?).

Perhaps it was the lack of visuals, but Che and Jost lacked the pace and sharpness of their weekly political commentary on “Weekend Update,” and the monologue lost momentum built during the opening song.

Luckily, SNL returns Sept. 29.

Sean McDermott: Vontae Davis Mid-Game Retirement Won’t Be Distraction for Bills

BUFFALO, NY - SEPTEMBER 16: Vontae Davis #22 of the Buffalo Bills during pre-game warmups prior to the start of NFL game action against the Los Angeles Chargers at New Era Field on September 16, 2018 in Buffalo, New York. (Photo by Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images)

Buffalo Bills cornerback Vontae Davis retired during Sunday’s game in one of the stranger situations of the 2018 NFL season, but head coach Sean McDermott doesn’t want it to affect the team.

“We’re moving on,” he said, per Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. “That’s what a team does. This is not going to become a distraction for us.”

Davis started Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers but took himself out of the game.

“Reality hit me fast and hard: I shouldn’t be out there any more,” he said in his official statement.

Though the loss is an obvious disappointment considering the Bills signed the two-time Pro Bowler to a $5 million deal in the offseason, McDermott had positive things to say about the veteran Monday.

“I got a lot of respect for Vontae. He’s a good person. I certainly appreciate the way he worked when he was in here, but we’re moving forward as a football team. … You develop some personal relationships with these young men. You always want the best for them. It’s not a deal where we wish him anything but the best. We wish him the best. He’s had a heckuva career.”

McDermott doesn’t want it to be another distraction, though linebacker Lorenzo Alexander already called the move “completely disrespectful,” per Rodak.

The season is only two games old, but the Bills are already headed toward a disastrous year. The squad is off to a 0-2 start while being outscored 78-23 overall.

Davis’ retirement creates just another negative storyline for McDermott and the rest of the coaching staff.

US slaps tariffs on $200bn in China goods as trade war escalates

US President Donald Trump has said he will impose 10 percent US tariffs on about $200bn worth of Chinese imports, but he spared some consumer products.

The new tariffs will take effect from September 24, Trump said in a statement on Monday. It will increase to 25 percent on January 1 unless the two countries reach a deal on trade.

Trump also warned that if China takes retaliatory action against US farmers or industries, “we will immediately pursue phase three, which is tariffs on approximately $267bn of additional imports”.

Trump said the tariffs aim to force a change in Chinese trade policies that he said posed “a grave threat to the long-term health and prosperity of the United States economy”.

So far, the United States has imposed tariffs on $50bn worth of Chinese products to pressure China to make sweeping changes to its trade, technology transfer and high-tech industrial subsidy policies. Beijing pushed back, slapping tariffs on $50bn worth of American goods.

China had previously vowed to retaliate further against any new US tariffs, with state-run media arguing for an aggressive “counterattack”.

The escalation of Trump’s tariffs on China comes after talks between the world’s two largest economies to resolve their trade differences have produced no results. US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin invited top Chinese officials to a new round of talks last week, but thus far nothing has been scheduled.

A senior Trump administration official told reporters that the United States was open to further talks with Beijing, but offered no immediate details on when any new meetings may occur.

“This is not an effort to constrain China, but this is an effort to work with China and say, ‘It’s time you address these unfair trade practices that we’ve identified that others have identified and that have harmed the entire trading system,’” the official said.

China’s yuan currency has weakened by about six percent against the US dollar since mid-June, offsetting the 10 percent tariff rate by a considerable margin.

Consumer tech trimmed

The US Trade Representative’s office eliminated about 300 product categories from the proposed tariff list, along with some subsets of other categories, but administration officials said the total value of the revised list would still be “approximately $200 billion”.

A broad, $23bn category of internet-connected devices will remain subject to tariffs, but some products, such as smart watches, Bluetooth devices, and other consumer-focused technology products were removed following a lengthy public vetting period during which more than 6,000 comments were received.

Apple also sent a letter earlier this month, urging the administration to shield its smartwatch and wireless headphones, which contain parts from Chinese supppliers.

Also spared from the tariffs were Chinese inputs for US-produced chemicals used in manufacturing, textiles and agriculture.

Consumer safety products made in China, such as bicycle helmets sold by Vista Outdoor and baby car seats and other products from Graco Inc also were taken off the list.

‘Tax on American families’

But the adjustments did little to appease technology and retail groups who argued that the tariffs would hit consumers hard.

“President Trump’s decision to impose an additional $200bn is reckless and will create lasting harm to communities across the country,” said Dean Garfield, president of the Information Technology Industry Council, which represents major tech firms.

The Retail Industry Leaders Association pointed out that the new tariffs would still hit more than $1bn worth of gas grills from China, $843m worth of luggage and travel bags, $825m worth of mattresses, and $1.9bn worth of vacuum cleaners.

“Tariffs are a tax on American families, period,” said Hun Quach,” RILA’s vice president for international trade. “Consumers – not China – will bear the brunt of these tariffs and American farmers and ranchers will see the harmful effects of retaliation worsen.”

Analysts have warned that a full-scale trade war between the two could cause setbacks for global markets.

Earlier on Monday, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said the United States was ready to negotiate a trade deal with China if Beijing was ready for serious discussions.

“We are ready to negotiate and talk with China any time that they are ready for serious and substantive negotiations towards free trade, to reduce tariffs and non tariff barriers, to open markets and allow the most competitive economy in the world – ours – to export more and more goods and services to China,” Kudlow said.

Millie Bobby Brown Is A Modern-Day Princess Peach At The Emmys

Getty Images

Millie Bobby Brown is having a real princess moment at the 2018 Emmy Awards. The Stranger Things star evoked the spirit of our favorite video game heroine in a pretty millennial pink princess gown from Calvin Klein.

From the off-the-shoulders neckline to the bow embellishments to the rose print, the 14-year-old Emmy nominee looked sophisticated and sweet. Brown completed the royal ensemble with delicate gold jewelry, matching pink shoes, and a fresh, dewy face.

MBB is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Eleven in Stranger Things for the second year in a row. Whether she takes home a shiny Emmy statuette or not, it doesn’t really matter; after all, Brown has already won our hearts — and seriously slayed the red gold carpet.

She doesn’t need Mario to save her! She’s busting out of Bowser’s Castle all on her own. (And she probably won’t even break a sweat.)

Emmy Awards 2018: Here’s a list of all the winners

Titans clash at the 2018 Emmy Awards on Monday night.

The Handmaid’s Tale won big at the 2017 show, taking wins in the Lead Actress, Supporting Actress, and Best Drama Series categories. But can it hope to repeat that success with Game of Thrones back in the mix, not to mention heavy-hitters like Stranger Things and the recently concluded The Americans?

On the comedy side of things, Veep‘s 2018 Emmys hiatus clears the stage for a new favorite to emerge. Will it be Donald Glover’s Atlanta, which delivered a deeply thoughtful and highly experimental second season, to great success? Or maybe it’ll be Glow that rises to the top; the Netflix series about women’s wrestling has been an exciting source of buzz since Season 1 premiered last summer.

Here’s a full list of all the Emmys categories you care about, and we’ll be updating it throughout the night as new winners are announced. Tune in for the 70th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Michael Che and Colin Jost (the Saturday Night Live Weekend Update guys), at 8:00 p.m. ET on NBC.
