Democrats believe Ramirez but stiff-arm Avenatti

Mazie Hirono and Chuck Schumer

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), who’s become one of the Judiciary panel’s most vocal Democrats on sexual misconduct issues, delivered blunt advice to Avenatti: “If he has something to introduce, he should do it now. I haven’t had any contact with him.” | Zach Gibson/Getty Images

Kavanaugh confirmation

Senators in the minority demand more time to look into another sexual assault claim against Brett Kavanaugh.

Democratic senators who have rallied behind Christine Blasey Ford against Brett Kavanaugh are doing the same for a second woman who accused the Supreme Court nominee — though they acknowledge she came forward with doubts about her memory.

Multiple Democrats told POLITICO on Monday that they see Deborah Ramirez’s account in The New Yorker as credible — if not airtight — evidence for a case that President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee has a pattern of untoward behavior toward women. They want the Judiciary Committee to postpone Thursday’s planned hearing where Ford and Kavanaugh are set to testify to allow more time to look into Ramirez as well as Ford’s claims.

Story Continued Below

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) called for an FBI investigation of Ramirez’s allegation, which dates to when she and Kavanaugh attended Yale. Coons said he’s concerned more accusers will come forward.

“By pushing forward with this Thursday’s hearing, we’re at real risk of not hearing all of the relevant allegations against Judge Kavanaugh,” Coons said. “Any senator who don’t have real concerns about Judge Kavanaugh’s reputation, his integrity, ought to take a step back and reconsider at this point.”

If the FBI doesn’t investigate the new allegations, the Judiciary panel should, Coons added. Ramirez should be “given an opportunity to testify in front of the committee,” he said.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a member of Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) leadership team, sounded a similar note in calling for a delay of any committee vote on Kavanaugh “until there is a thorough investigation of Dr. Ford’s statements, and I think the same for Ms. Ramirez.”

Democrats’ move to largely unify behind Ramirez comes as the GOP has tried to undercut her allegation that Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a dormitory party. Republicans highlighted that she needed six days and a legal consultation about her recollection of the alcohol-fueled gathering before coming forward in the New Yorker, trying to heighten the political risk for Democrats in going all in on Ramirez’s allegation.

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), a former Judiciary chairman, swatted away Ramirez’s claims: “I don’t think we need to look into that. You’re going to have these phony allegations.”

But for even some moderate Democrats, the relatively murky corroboration of Ramirez’s allegation bolsters the case for a further investigation into claims that one of the authors of The New Yorker story said initially came from Yale alumni chatter, not from Ramirez herself.

Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), a member of the Democratic caucus who came out against Kavanaugh only after his first confirmation hearing ended, said the Judiciary panel should “try to get the facts.”

Asked whether he was concerned about the credibility of Ramirez’s recollection, given her delay in coming forward and the New York Times’ decision not to report on her claim, King said, “I’m not going to try to game that out. … A hearing is not worthy of the name if it doesn’t examine what facts are available on a given topic.”

While most Democrats are taking Ramirez’s allegation seriously — if not to the extent they’re publicly backed Ford they’re stopping far short of giving the same treatment to a third, unknown woman tied to the nominee and represented by celebrity lawyer Michael Avenatti.

Avenatti has tweeted that his client is a “woman with credible information” concerning “the targeting of women with alcohol/drugs” by Kavanaugh and his longtime friend Mark Judge, whom Ford has identified as the third person in the room during her alleged assault. But Democratic senators are treading lightly on the claims from Avenatti, who also represents Trump antagonist Stormy Daniels and is weighing a presidential run.

“You know I never have no comment, but I have no comment about Michael Avenatti,” Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) said.

“Until we have more information, there’s not much that anyone can do with that,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), like Sanders a member of Schumer’s leadership team and leading 2020 presidential contender, said of Avenatti’s client.

“But since there are two women who have come forward – they have made credible claims, they have made their names public – it now means that the FBI should be conducting a full investigation” into both Ford and Ramirez’s allegations, Warren added.

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), who’s become one of the Judiciary panel’s most vocal Democrats on sexual misconduct issues, delivered blunt advice to Avenatti: “If he has something to introduce, he should do it now. I haven’t had any contact with him.”

A spokesman for Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said Sunday night that the committee would reach out to Ramirez, and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said Monday that the panel had done so. Ramirez’s attorneys did not return a request for comment on Monday on to what extent she has communicated with the committee.

Avenatti has tweeted screenshots of his communications with Grassley’s staff about his still-anonymous client, which the GOP initiated minutes after the lawyer posted his first declaration that he represents “a woman with credible information regarding Judge Kavanaugh and Mark Judge.”

Who is Anita Hill?

Washington, DC – As the US Senate Judiciary Committee prepares to hear testimony from Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused current Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, many can’t help but have flashbacks of a hearing that took place nearly 30 years ago.

The hearing was of a 35-year-old Anita Hill who had accused Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual misconduct.

On October 11, 1991, Hill, then a law professor at the University of Oklahoma, testified before the all-male committee, relaying how her “positive” work relationship with Thomas turned into a sexual harassment battle a decade earlier.

She described her childhood as one consisting of “hard work and not much money”. Despite this, she went off to complete her undergraduate at Oklahoma State University and later joined Yale Law School. By 1981 she was a practicing lawyer in Washington, DC, at Wald, Harkrader & Ross, where a mutual friend introduced her to Thomas.

“Judge Thomas told me that he was anticipating a political appointment and asked if I would be interested in working with him,” she told the committee at the time. “He was, in fact, appointed as Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights. After he had taken that post, he asked if I would become his assistant, and I accepted that position,” Hill said.

Three months into the job, Hill said Thomas began to pressure her to go out with him and spoke of sex at work.

“[H]e referred to the size of his own penis as being larger than normal and he also spoke on some occasions of the pleasures he had given to women with oral sex,” Hill said in her opening statement. “At this point, late 1982, I began to feel severe stress on the job. I began to be concerned that Clarence Thomas might take out his anger with me by degrading me or not giving me important assignments. I also thought that he might find an excuse for dismissing me.”

After listening to her testimony, senators grilled Hill over specifics, questioning how after more than 100 days of public praise Thomas was being faced with such accusations. As Hill sat calmly leaned towards a microphone, she answered questions, having to sometimes repeat her experience, and gave eyebrow-raising details that had senators twitching uncomfortably in their chairs.

Thomas denied the accusations, calling the hearing a “high-tech lynching” and “national disgrace”.

“It is a message that, unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you,” he told the committe on the first day of the hearings. “You will be lynched, destroyed, caricatured by a committee of the US Senate, rather than hung by a tree.”

Thomas ‘had political cover’

Sam Fulwood III, a political correspondent for the Los Angeles Times at the time, attended the hearing 27 years ago. Fulwood’s interest in the case started when he was reporting from Kennebunkport, Maine when George HW Bush made the Supreme Court nominee during his vacation.

“Bush checked in advance and got tacit agreement [Thomas] was an acceptable choice, so the black civil rights community was going to be less energetic to oppose the nomination,” he told Al Jazeera.

“When that became very clear some women groups that were concerned about women’s rights and abortion in particular, they sprung into action. They were the ones who identified Anita Hill as someone who could potentially threaten the nomination.”

Just as Thomas was days away from being sworn in, reporter Nina Totenberg broke the story of the sexual allegations leading to a rolling chain of events that seemed to momentarily halt Thomas’s nomination.

Republican Senator Orrin Hatch, who sat on the committee in 1991, is expected to sit on this week’s hearing regarding the allegations against Kavanaugh. Unlike in 1991 when Hatch supported an FBI investigation before Hill’s testimony, he has dismissed calls for one by Ford.

“Now they are saying they don’t have time and they say the FBI doesn’t do investigations of this sort – when in fact they clearly did before,” Fulwood said.

Days later after Hill’s testimony, the Senate confirmed Thomas to the Supreme Court with a narrow majority vote of 52-48. Approval ratings from the time conducted by Gallup reveal that Hill’s testimony had even tipped some undecided Americans to favour an already popular nominee. The day before Hill’s testimony, Thomas’ approval rating was at 53 percent. He gained five percent in the days following Hill’s testimony, with those undecided dropping from 17 percent to 12.

“At the time of his confirmation he was more popular – majority of Americans supported his nomination,” Fulwood said. “It made it easier not to believe Anita’s claims. Anita Hill was a black woman in 1991. We did not have the ‘me too’ movement. In 1991 the perception of sexuality and particularly of a black woman’s sexually is not what it is today. They were much more likely to think of a black woman to be loose back then. Given the popularity of Thomas, then [the senate] had a political cover.”

As sexual harassment stories were rare in the public sphere at the time, Hill’s testimony was seen as an embarrassment by some, particularly among African-Americans.

After asking dozens of African-Americans of what they thought of “a black man and a black woman engaged in this discussion about sex, etc”, Fulwood said an overwhelming number of people wished it never happened.

‘The public expects better’

Once the hearing was over, Hill’s story lived on and evolved into a woman’s movement across the US.

Thomas’s popularity quickly took a turn when his court decisions proved unpopular and unprogressive. At that point people started wondering if Hill had a point. Women, who’d been angered over the absence of a woman on the judiciary committee had started to run for office. Other women felt empowered to report sexual harassment cases, which saw a spike the following year, the “year of women”, as some called it.

Recently, Hill urged the judicial committee to learn from their 1991 mistakes in an op-ed penned for the New York Times.

“The public expects better from our government than we got in 1991, when our representatives performed in ways that gave employers permission to mishandle workplace harassment complaints throughout the following decades,” Hill wrote.

Avenatti stars in ‘avenging angel’ role

Michael Avenatti

Michael Avenatti’s ascent from no-name to a household name in just six months hasn’t gone unnoticed among political professionals. | Spencer Platt/Getty Images

Legal

For the third time this year, the attorney and 2020 presidential prospect has rolled a grenade into the Trump White House.

He’s dismissed as a publicity hound, a carnival barker and even a “creepy porn lawyer.”

But for the third time this year, the combative Michael Avenatti — a sustained anti-Trump fixture on cable TV who is also exploring a 2020 presidential run — has found a way to claw his way into another major scandal, potentially making a bad situation even worse for the Trump White House.

Story Continued Below

Avenatti says his latest client is a victim of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who is prepared to take her story public in the next 48 hours.

His claim has been met with more than a little skepticism — as has his prospective presidential bid. But Avenatti’s uncanny knack for drawing blood from the president and beating Trump at his own game has some top Democrats warning that the lawyer shouldn’t be dismissed outright as a factor in the Democratic presidential field.

“There’s no doubt about it. He’s been relentless and he’s been prescient, particularly about the things he’s been involved in. The Michael Cohen matter in particular. He predicted for months that Cohen would plead guilty and cooperate. He did. He predicted this whole deal with his client Stormy Daniels would unravel. It did,” said longtime Democratic strategist David Axelrod. “He has a particular utility right now, which is, with the people who are furious with Trump, he is the avenging angel.”

Best known for representing adult film star Stormy Daniels in her legal tangles with Trump, Avenatti opened a separate legal front this summer by representing mothers separated from their children under President Trump’s controversial border separation policy.

Together, his efforts have shaped a profile resembling a Democratic anti-Trump — a character brazen, pugilistic and media-savvy enough to go toe-to-toe with Trump, whom Democrats have struggled to message against.

Avenatti’s stratospheric ascent from no-name to a household name in just six months hasn’t gone unnoticed among political professionals. A former opposition researcher, Avenatti also has shown an ability to dig up information and frame it in a way to get a rise out of the person with whom he’s quarreling. And his capacity for choreographing news cycle after news cycle has led to stylistic comparisons with Trump himself.

“I think there were a lot of people that discounted Trump in 2014 and 2015, but he had a knack for getting in the middle of stories. What he did in that campaign really sort of rewrote the books for how you run for president,” said Iowa-based Democratic consultant Jeff Link. “I think Avenatti understands how to do the exact same thing as well or as better as anybody else … I think there is such a palpable desire to get rid of Trump and he plays right into that.”

Like Trump, Avenatti uses Twitter as his weapon of choice. Pinned to the top of his page is an outline of where he stands on 20 issues, and his timeline is filled with bold assertions of fact and confrontational statements, mixed with sharp, personal criticism of his opponents.

“I have been practicing law for nearly 20 yrs. Never before have I seen a defendant so frightened to be deposed as Donald Trump, especially for a guy that talks so tough. He is desperate and doing all he can to avoid having to answer my questions. He is all hat and no cattle,” he writes in one tweet.

That approach has made Avenatti a hot item on the Democratic speaking circuit over the past five weeks. His calendar is filled with requests to hold fundraisers and get out the vote events for candidates across the country. He’s headlined major political events in Iowa and New Hampshire and has already said he’ll headquarter his presidential campaign in St. Louis where he grew up.

Link, who traveled with Avenatti on a trip through Iowa earlier this summer, said he visited a farm with Avenatti and was impressed by the ease with which he connected with Democrats at a fundraising dinner.

“He’s more than just someone who understands how a story is going to move. He’s worked in Democratic politics before, he understands Democratic issues in a pretty deep way of how things work in Washington,” he said. “He’s not just some lawyer in L.A. who knows how to generate publicity. He’s more than that.”

Still, Avenatti’s claims are often viewed as bombastic and have been greeted with a degree of suspicion — including his latest allegations against Kavanaugh, which he’s teased out over Twitter.

After Avenatti orchestrated a document dump on Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen, for example, Cohen’s lawyers complained Avenatti included some bank records traced back to a different Michael Cohen.

The idea that he’s playing fast and loose with facts, or making unsubstantiated claims, clearly grates on him.

“I’ve not had to backtrack on one single thing I’ve said. I’ve made a number of bold predictions, they have all either come true or they’re playing out. Not one of them. I was the first person, even before the search warrants were executed on Michael Cohen, to say he would turn on the president and roll over on him,” Avenatti told POLITICO Monday. “I’ll put my track record of the last 6-7 months up against anybody’s. I’ve never had to backtrack on a single statement that I’ve made in well over probably over 700 TV and print interviews.”

He said he and his team have either not pursued or rendered not credible more than 3,000 inquiries to his office in the last six months. “I don’t traffic in rumor and nonsense. I traffic in the truth and fact,” Avenatti said.

Still, there’s a healthy dose of distrust of Avenatti among Capitol Hill Democrats who were hesitant on Monday to take the attorney too seriously on the latest allegations tied to Kavanaugh.

Avenatti scoffed at any suggestion that the claims weren’t credible or that he hadn’t properly vetted his client.

“We will publicly disclose her name and more information about her accusations within the next 48 hours,” Avenatti said. “We’re deciding how that would occur, making sure there is security in place. We’re getting our ducks in a row. This is a very strategic and methodical approach, which is what we did with Stormy Daniels.”

He’s also regularly posting his correspondence with the Senate Judiciary Committee. In a series of tweets, Avenatti alleges a broader scheme involving Kavanaugh and a friend, Mark Judge, that included targeting young women at parties.

Avenatti, who said he represents a victim and corroborating witnesses, told POLITICO Monday that the victim’s identity and details of the accusations would become public over the next 48 hours.

All of it has made him a target of the right. During a Fox News appearance, host Tucker Carlson interviewed Avenatti while a banner appearing on the screen referred to him as a “creepy porn lawyer.”

And Avenatti has become ubiquitous enough in recent months to emerge as a familiar villain to the GOP grassroots. He’s become fodder in the Wisconsin Senate race, where Republican nominee Leah Vukmir pointed to Avenatti’s statements about Kavanaugh as a way to discredit the whole process as a political sham.

“Michael Avenatti, presidential aspirant of Stormy Daniels fame, has decided he also wants to join the Democrat delay circus and what has become clear is that the Far Left is engaged in an all-out, no-holds-barred, last-minute character assassination, rather than responsibly vetting and filling a seat on the Supreme Court,” Vukmir said in a statement.

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel offered her own scorn on Twitter Monday.

“How do we know this is a baseless smear against Judge Kavanaugh?”

1) No witnesses. 2) No corroborating evidence. 3) Michael Avenatti is involved.”

There’s still some question over how Avenatti’s ostentatious profile will translate on the campaign trail, Axelrod said, noting that the attorney will have to speak to issues and answer to a more engaged electorate.

“There’s a long way between here and there,” Axelrod warned. “Presidential races are like pole vaulting; it’s easy to clear the early heights but each time the bar gets raised. People look more deeply at you, they want to know what you know. They look at you with greater scrutiny.”

Anyone who counts out Avenatti now hasn’t learned the lessons from 2016, says Link, the Democratic strategist.

“I’ll bet 100 percent of the people who were dismissive of Avenatti probably said that Trump would never win a primary in ‘16,” Link said. “There was almost no one who thought Trump would win that primary at this point four years ago and even at this point three years ago.”

Supermarket hummus is garbage. Instead, make your own.

Image: GETTY IMAGES FOR FOOD NETWORK MAGAZINE

2016%2f09%2f16%2fe5%2fhttpsd2mhye01h4nj2n.cloudfront.netmediazgkymde1lzew.e9fc9By Heather Dockray

This is You Won’t Regret It, a new weekly column featuring recommendations, tips, and unsolicited advice from the Mashable culture team.

People nowadays are under tremendous pressure to do everything themselves, whether it’s designing our own clothes, building our own internet or — good God — making our own lunch for work.

It’s too damn much. But forgive me if I add another task to the pile: You need to make your own hummus. No store-bought version, no matter how fancy the label is, can stand up to homemade.

SEE ALSO: We tried avocado chocolate toast, the new ‘it’ food according to at least one pop star

For what it’s worth, I think most items can be purchased from the grocery store without any reduction in quality. Frozen pizza is always better than any homemade nonsense your friend made with bland homemade dough and their imagination. Supermarket ice cream is 100 percent superior to whatever sloppy bullshit you concocted with your overpriced Williams Sonoma ice cream maker. Your homemade fries have nothing on those little frozen bebés that come sprinkled with parmesan fairy dust. And why in the world would you spend the afternoon shopping for high-end brownie ingredients when you can down a pan made from Betty Crocker’s masterful powdered mix in one sitting?

But not hummus. There is simply no packaged version that gets it exactly right. Some of the brands out there are creamy, but lack that legendary light texture. Some get way too experimental with flavors. (Balsamic Caramelized Onion hummus? Come on. That’s a hamburger topping.)

I don’t blame the brands for mediocre hummus. It’s spectacularly hard to package and mass produce a food that just tastes best fresh. Whatever extras the brands include in their products — citric acid, potassium sorbate, crummy oils — dulls the chickpea flavor. Pretzels can only pick up so much of the slack.

Homemade hummus is the only way, because it’s not loaded down with preservative poison and because most recipes you’ll find on the internet do the job just fine. Plus, it requires few ingredients, most of which are cheap kitchen cabinet staples. I’m a huge fan of Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi’s recipe. It’s slightly more labor-intensive than others, but it’s absolutely worth it. Bonus: it uses ice water to maximize the sexxxy creaminess.

It’s time for you to step up your picnic game. If you have the audacity to bring raw vegetables to a picnic (too healthy/borderline unethical,) don’t double down on evil by bringing store-brand hummus. Take the extra time to make homemade hummus.

Your stomach — and those raggedy-ass carrots you’re serving — deserve so much more.

Ryan Reynolds has been anointed the “King of Twitter” time and time again. Thanks to his expert trolling abilities, and his acerbic and irreverent jabs and jokes he’s constantly winning us over.

But, Reynolds has also proved to be the perfect target. The actor, and his many film characters have been adapted to perfectly suite the internet’s needs for sarcastic reactions and silly memes.

So, here’s a round-up of the some of the best Ryan Reynolds memes, that we believe the Twitter luminary himself would approve of, despite how unflattering or absurd some of them may be.

1. Reynolds’ “sad face”

During one of Taylor Swift’s famous Fourth of July parties in 2016, Swift shared a photograph — that has since been deleted — of all her pals on Instagram. Reynolds was there sporting a forlorn expression on his face, spawning the beautiful “sad face” meme.

Reynolds later explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he was not in fact sad when the photo was taken — that’s just his face.

“No that’s a problem I’ve had all my life,” the actor told Entertainment Weekly, when asked if he was upset. “If I’m not aware a photo is being taken, my natural resting face is one of a man dying. I had no idea somebody was taking a photo. Therefore I was resting comfortably in my persona of a man whose soul is visibly exiting this earth.”

2. When Reynolds was Photoshopped into someone’s prom photos

Following a post-prom break up, Twitter user gabidunn99 choose to Photoshop Reynolds into her prom photo, which gained a ton of traction online. Soon after the edited photos were shared, brirenaexo replied to the tweet with her own Photoshopped pics from the year before, featuring her and Channing Tatum at her prom.

Reynolds later responded to the tweet and suggested they Photoshop him into her ex’s yearbook photo next.

3. “But, why?”

Reynold played a nurse in the cult stoner classic Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle. While the role may have been small, it has become a favorite reaction GIF online.

In clip Reynolds asks a simple question: “But, why?”

But of course, he asks it in his sarcasm-tinged tone that he’s become famous for, making it the perfect GIF to send when you’re curious with a nice hint of snark.

4. The Deadpool and Spider-Man kiss

Following Andrew Garfield and Reynold’s impromptu kiss at the 2017 Golden Globes, numerous memes of Deadpool and Spider-Man kissing have spawned. And honestly, they’re pretty adorable.

5. Reynolds’ feud with Paddington Bear

I don’t know how you get into a fight with the world’s purest being, Paddington Bear, but Reynolds managed to do so. After making a joke about Deadpool being nominated for a People’s Choice award, things became heated between the actor and Britain’s favorite bear.

“So honored by all the @PeoplesChoice noms. Hope you vote for Deadpool 2 and feel free to write us in for best Family Film,” Reynolds tweeted. “Because watch your fucking back, Paddington.”

Paddington of course responded in the most Paddington way possible, a simple “#hardstare.”

But the internet, unhappy with Reynolds’ jab at the beloved bear, began threatening and sending warnings to the Deadpool actor, in a hilarious, yet very fair way.

While, the feud may have blown over, it’s still probably best if Reynolds steers clear of Paddington, and continues to respect his loving, glowing light, that is pure joy and goodness.

6. When Reynolds made it into the “if you don’t love me at my…” meme

This meme is pretty self explanatory, but we still love Reynolds’ inclusion in the “if you don’t love me at my…” featuring him side-by-side as Green Lantern and Deadpool. Reynolds later admitted he never even bothered to watch Green Lantern

7. When Reynolds made himself into a meme, when he trolled tiny sunglasses

As soon as tiny sunglasses — like those sported on the Kardashians and Hadids — began gaining favor, Reynolds took a stance, calling out the goofy fashion trend, posting photos of himself in the tiniest of glasses.

Thank you to Reynolds’ for creating his own beautiful meme to act as the voice of reason.

Mashable is investigating how science affects our daily lives. From the chemistry of cilantro to why we fear clowns, you’ll always learn something new.

Jered Chinnock has been paralyzed and unable to walk for the last five years after a tragic snowmobile accident. Now there is hope. A new therapy, developed in collaboration between Mayo Clinic and UCLA, uses an implanted electrode to reactivate spinal cord circuits. The experts claim this is the first documented case of something like this happening. Patients at other institutions have also seen benefits from this therapy, and although more work needs to be done, it seems promising.

It’s been a particularly traumatizing week for victims of sexual assault and harassment.

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh now faces at least two accusations of sexual misconduct, and yet, Senate Republicans remain determined to appoint him. In response, women’s rights organizations organized a national walkout on Monday at 1 pm ET in solidarity with survivors.

Time’s Up, along with NARAL Pro-Choice America, the Women’s March, the YWCA, and Planned Parenthood helped plan the walkouts, organized under the hashtags #BelieveSurvivors and #StopKavanaugh. Protestors were encouraged to wear black.

Senate Republicans have been largely indifferent to or skeptical of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who was the first person to accuse Kavanaugh of sexual assault. On Sunday, Sen. Lindsey Graham admitted that he planned to vote for Kavanaugh regardless of what Ford said in her testimony.

For survivors and the people who care about them, the message is crushing and familiar: Your experience doesn’t matter.

The walkout, however symbolic, served as antidote:

Activists also staged a massive walkout and protest in the Russell Senate Office Building. Survivors delivered heart-wrenching testimony about their experiences:

It’s unclear whether these protests will have any effect on the Senate Republicans, who seem dead set on holding a vote, regardless of the mounting accusations against Kavanaugh.

#TimesNotUp for him just yet — but that could change.
